Plans are already underway for the 6th annual Cars for a Cure event as the concert for cancer survivors at Hialeah Park and the classic car show on Main Street were successful in raising awareness and money for the deadly disease. Cars for a Cure organizer Roberto Alonso Jr. said this year’s event raised more than $30,000 and all of the proceeds will be donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. Alonso, whose father Miami Lakes’ first vice mayor Roberto Alonso Sr., founded the original classic car show on Main Street, said next year’s event will be scheduled for Friday, April 3 with concert at Hialeah Park, and Sunday, April 5 for the car show. During the 5th annual Cars for a Cure Alonso said about 3,000 people attended the concert for cancer survivors, and 3,000 people attended the classic car show on Main Street where more than 500 cars were

on display. He said about 500 cancer survivors with free passes attended the concert and thanked Alonso’s family and the Brunetti family, which owns Hialeah Park, for the event which celebrated their survivorship. “It was great seeing them enjoying the concert,” Alonso said. “They also enjoyed the car show.” The cars and the participants were the most in the event’s history, Alonso said. The concert featured 1980s and 1990s music legends such as Erotic Exotic, Man Trap, Coro, Angel A-Love and D.J. Santana. Next year’s concert will feature different music genes for different generations of music lovers. The car show featured entertainment by local county singer Ricky Valid and Man Trap, performing in the popular Beer Garden. (Continued from Page 1) Alonso thanked his sponsors the Graham family and the Brunetti family for their support and allowing him to use their venues for the events. “We are grateful and blessed to have their sponsorship, Alonso said. “The events celebrate survivorship of cancer and raise money and awareness to fight it. The events brought two great communities, Miami Lakes and Hialeah, together for a great cause. Alonso also thanked Country Club of Miami Community Council Vice Chair Alex Rizo, Jr., for his support for Cars for a Cure. The event has inspired a documentary as Hialeah Park and students at Westland High School are preparing production work for the film Alonso said. The documentary will debut at the Main Street Play

House and the high school students plan on presenting it at the film festival. Alonso said cancer has touched so many lives, and the documentary focuses on the challenges for people fighting cancer and interviews with cancer survivors and their fight to stay alive. “My father’s challenges led to the concert and car show events, and not a documentary, Alonso said. Roberto Alonso Sr., succumbed to cancer and his family is grateful to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for treating his illness which allowed him to live a year and half longer. “That’s important, Alonso said. “My father got to travel all over the world and enjoyed life. That was so important to him and my family.

Council debates cost for Optimist Park overhaul PAGE 12

JUNE 7, 2019 THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The rising costs for a major overhaul at Miami Lakes Optimist Park became the centerpiece of a fierce debate between council members and residents who vehemently disagreed with a rumored price tag as high as $17 million to complete the park’s master plan. The original cost of $4.5 million was too expensive for residents, who were left mulling if Miami Lakes would float a bond referendum to finance the town’s oldest and decrepit park and raise their taxes. During one workshop, the costs reportedly increased to $8.5 million including creating the new designs for the park and a rise in construction costs, which was not acceptable to residents, and $17 million discussed at a later workshop sent residents through the roof. But Town Manager Edward Pidermann said $17 million was not an accurate amount and Deputy Town Manager Tony Lopez, Miami Lakes former parks and recreation director, also disagreed with the costs for the park’s major improvements. The Miami Lakes Optimist Park master plan includes new tennis courts, basketball courts with an airnasium, baseball and softball fields, dug outs, battling

cages, bike and walking paths and a new lighting and irrigation system. At the May 14 regular Miami Lakes Town Council meeting, lawmakers approved Councilmember Luis Collazo’s proposal to allow town staff to resume offering council members and residents a menu of options with different price tags. From there, council members and residents can eliminate some improvement projects costs to reflect the original $4.5 million price tag. “Options should also include short term debt versus long term debt, build the park all at once versus phases approach,” Collazo said. “The options would further advance talks to make some decisions in making the improvements to the park.” Collazo said current and past council members are united for the park’s major overhaul but they also sharply divided on how much to spend on the master plan. “At one workshop, when discussing our strategic plan, the costs for the upgrades were $4.5 million,” Collzao said. “At another meeting a month ago, it was $8 million. The $17 million was not what residents claimed it to be. If it’s $8 million, that can be further reduced.” Collazo, who grew up in

Miami Lakes and played at the park as a member of the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, said the recreation facility is an essential part of the community. “I went to schools in Miami Lakes and I’m a product of the Optimist Club,” he said. “With residents’ phone calls and emails, not one of them said leave the park the way it is. They want to know what options do we have.” The different costs estimates ruffled some residents’ feathers who are fiscally conservative when it comes to their tax dollars. Though she supports the park’s improvements, Councilmember Marilyn Ruano said the proposed price tags were too high. “I’m not in favor of $17 million, and $4 million gave me a little heartburn,” she said. “When I ran for office, I promised to be fiscally conservative for our residents.” Councilmember Jeffrey Rodriguez said the park’s cost estimates would be much clearer when town staff completes its analysis and offers residents a host of options. “We have shown we want to do the park,” he said. “Let town staff do their jobs and they will determine how much it would cost. This is what we can do to reduce it or should we do a

bond? Let them come to us and once we have the information we can say cut here and cut there.” Councilmember Carlos Alvarez said the town shouldn’t identify the park’s priorities until a new agreement is reached with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools which owns 70 percent of the property near Miami Lakes Middle School. “Once we can do that, we can do things in phases,” he said. Pidermann said the joint use agreement with the school board spells out all of the parameters of sharing this space and more importantly the length of time that this agreement would be in effect. The town is insisting on a long term agreement in order to spend millions of dollars. Mayor Manny Cid, who was the only no vote for Collzao’s proposal because he favors a different design presented at the workshop agreed with Alvarez. “We are not going to make a decision until the school board deal is done,” he said. Miami Lakes’ first mayor, Wayne Slaton, said the town secured half of the costs for the park’s master plan when he left office in 2008. “The park should’ve been developed by 2012,” he said. “And here we are in 2019, and

we still don’t have it.” Slaton said the main goal for incorporation for Miami Lakes, Doral, Palmetto Bay and Miami Gardens in the early 2000s was to render better municipal services than Miami-Dade County government, especially for parks and recreation. He said Miami Lakes is the only city left without a state-ofthe art facility. “Miami Lakes Optimist Park was the biggest facility the county had to maintain,” he said. “But we couldn’t have the state-of-the-town park that Miami Lakes deserves.” Miami Lakes residents overwhelmingly defeated a straw ballot following incorporation which would’ve allowed the town to borrow money to finance the park’s master plan. The town had to rely on the pay-as-you go plan which delayed the project for 15 years. Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, who was a guest at the council meeting, said a national study suggested property values go up because of good parks. “When we first started we were worse off than Miami Lakes,” he said. “Now we have good parks in Doral. Parks need to be kept up and improved.”

Miami Lakes resident Taylor Barimo, who recently earned her Doctorate degree in Pharmacy from the University of Florida (UF), is living her dream. Since she was student at Miami Lakes Educational Center Barimo had her sights set on a career in pharmacy and took one step closer to her career achievement when she attended where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in biology and graduated Cum Laude. She was then accepted into the Doctor of Pharmacy program at UF which is currently ranked in the top 10 in America. Barimo, 25, is now finishing up medical rotations at the Cleveland Clinic. “I’m excited about my career,” she said. Hialeah Miami Lakes’ Project Citizens team competes at state The Project Citizen team at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School (HML) advanced to the Project Citizen State finals. This is the third consecutive year the team has advanced to the final round of this competition. The team's project last school year won Best Overall High School Portfolio and represented the State of Florida in the Project Citizen national showcase earning a Superior rating. This year, HML's project is “Mind Yourself:Access to Mental Health Services in Florida.” The team seeks to improve access to mental health care services for Florida public school students by proposing a Behavioral Health Education course for middle and high school students. The proposed course would address topics such as reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, managing stress and getting professional care. Project Citizen is a portfoliobased civic education program. As part of the program, students must identify, select and work to solve a problem with a public policy solution within the community. Participation in the program teaches students interested in law or law-related fields the important skills of monitoring and influencing public policy in a democratic society. The program is conducted through an elective course offering in the HML's Legal Studies Academy. The team defended their project at Florida Southern College in Lakeland on May 28.

Jose Marti MAST’s middle school golf team finished in fifth place in county finals The middle school golf team at Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy (JMMAST) finished up their best season ever this past April. With matches against local schools Hialeah Gardens Middle and Highland Oaks Middle, the team of six golfers improved each round on their way to county invitationals. The co-ed team consists of two eighth graders, Jessica Ruiz-Camargo and Nathan Serpa, three seventh graders, Fabriano Ayala, Giovanni Cruz and Jay Dieguez and sixth grader Bryan Blanco. Golf coach Ed Cruz says, “It’s been exciting to see their scores go down with each course we play. They are improving their skills, learning the fine points of the game, and they are a tight knit group that

has fun together.” The North division qualifying meet took place on April 16 at the Country Club of Miami where the team holds their practices. JMMAST again performed well with a low score of 62 on nine holes by Ayala, and Serpa and Cruz both with 64. As a result, the team qualified for the county finals at Palmetto Golf Course on April 25. Avoiding the water hazards and saving strokes out of the sand, the team finished in fifth place for Miami-Dade County. A successful season on JMMAST’s golf team leaves high hopes for next year’s team and the returning players. No matter their scores, they can look forward to summer vacation spending time on local courses with friends.

STU advances to play in Avista NAIA World Series PAGE 22

JUNE 7, 2019 THE MIAMI LAKER

For the second time in St. Thomas University baseball history and the first time since 2015, the Bobcats have advanced to play in the Avista NAIA World Series championship game defeating the University of Science and Arts (Oklahoma), 10-2, setting up a rematch with top ranked Tennessee Wesleyan this week for the national title. The game was scheduled for Tuesday, June 4 at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho. The Bulldogs defeated the Bobcats, 3-2, earlier in the tournament, putting STU in an elimination game. The Bobcats, ranked No. 6, prevailed and reached the national title game. In the Bobcats-Drovers game, STU pitcher Christoper Coipel (6-2) pitched the best game of his season lasting eight innings, striking out two and allowing two earned runs to earn his sixth win of the season. Coipel pitched through the eighth for the first time this season and into the eighth for the third time this season all against ranked teams (Keiser, Southeastern, USAO). St. Thomas opened the scoring in the top of the third inning following a RBI single by second baseman Erick Delgado which scored Daniel Lowry. Then, Sergio Lopez stepped

to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third inning, with a 11 count. Driving a pitch over the wall in left field for a grand slam, his seventeenth home run of the season to give STU a 5-0 lead. In the top of the sixth inning, a nice double by Lopez, giving him his fifth RBI, gave STU a 9-0 lead over Science and Arts. Coipel held the Drover offense recording 12 consecutive outs from the bottom of the first until the fifth when USAO reached on an error. Coipel worked around the error recording a ground ball out to end the inning.

THE SIERRA VOLLEYBALL CLUB OF MIAMI LAKESʼ 12U and 14U teams each won first place at the NVL RIZE 2019 Tournament in Port St. Lucie, Florida where they qualified to compete in the NVL RIZE Global Challenge Junior Championships this month at Club Med. The two teams are bidding to compete in the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games in Santa Monica, California in July. Pictured (from left 12U and 14 U players- Sophia Valbuena and Paris Vinuela, head coach Abraham Kurdic, and players Samantha Valbuena, Frances Vinuela.

After a successful first year with the FIU women's tennis program, the freshman duo of Basak Albas and Kamila Umarova recently earned AllConference USA honors as voted on by league coaches. The two Panthers were named to the All-CUSA Doubles First Team while Akbas earned spots on the All-CUSA Singles Second Team and the C-USA All-Freshman Team. For both student-athletes the recognition reflects the impressive seasons that each one of the rookie members had during the 2018-19 campaign. “Basak is an extremely hard working athlete, her dedication and ability to quickly adapt to collegiate tennis played an integral role in her success this season. Her accomplishments are a confirmation that hard work pays off,” said head coach Katarina Petrovic. In her first season with the Panthers, Akbas posted a 17-3 mark in singles competition. Playing in the No. 3 position, she held a 9-1 record and was undefeated in the fall while winning the No. 2 singles flight at the Bedford Cup in October. She was named C-USA Athlete of the Week on March 6 after achieving a near perfect weekend of competition. The Akbas-Umarova duo was a consistent force for the Panthers in 2018-19 sporting 8-2 doubles record overall and 6-2 mark in dual matches. The tandem ranked as high as No. 64 on the ITA/Oracle ranking this season, a rarity for a freshman pair to achieve. The dynamic duo remained undefeated against conference opponents while playing in the No.1 spot. They ended the season on a twomatch win streak, where they downed conference opponents UTEP and North Texas at the CUSA Championships. For Umarova, the freshman earned a 14-5 singles record overall in addition to her stellar doubles play with Akbas going 9-4 in dual play and 4-1 in CUSA contests. “Basak and Kami are team players and they showed that while they competed. They collaborated and brought the best out of each other during every match,” said Petrovic.

Pace High graduates 244 seniors in Class of 2019 THE MIAMI LAKER

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School (Pace) celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2019 with the traditional Baccalaureate Mass on May 19 at St. Bonaventure Catholic

Church in Davie to honor the graduates as they end high school and begin their collegiate years. Reverend Paul Vuturo celebration the afternoon service along with Class of 2006 Pace

Brian Rodriguez and Luis Salazar, both seniors at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School (HML), won the first annual Superintendent’s Student Innovation Challenge in the category of Health. Each student was awarded a $10,000 scholarship to the school of their choice. Their team, Cognitive Botics, developed an app called Cognitive Learning. This app can be used by employers to identify employees who may be experiencing mental health challenges. Employees complete an online survey and the results are used to predict with 83 percent accuracy those individuals who may need help. Employers can then make contact with these employees to offer wellness programs, medical leave, or remote work options. The logo of their app was “Mentally healthy employee equals productive workforce.” The young men were assisted by a coach, Ivan Yaeger, CEO of The Yaeger Companies. The Yaeger Companies provides

professional development, health care and consulting services. Ted Dinicola and Ray Parris, HML teachers in the Digital Media and Entrepreneurship Magnet, were instrumental in encouraging and helping them prepare for competition. Principal Lisa Garcia and science teacher Raul Hernandez were also influential in preparing the young men for competition Rodriguez will attend FIU and plans to study computer science. Salazar will attend Miami Dade College and plans to study computer engineering. Salazar said, “I learned how to be more confident in public speaking while also learning a lot about computers from Brian. I know that mental health is an important issue, and our solution can positively impact employees and employers, so it is a win-win situation.” “Improving my coding skills and making connections with people in the field will open doors for me, and the scholarship is going to help me graduate debt-free.” said Rodriguez.

leaves for future generations of Spartans. In a warm address, Garcia wished the graduates well and announced some of their many accolades. One highlight is that as a class, the 2019 graduates received $13 million in total academic and athletic scholarships. The 244 graduates received their diplomas and moved their tassels from left to right confirming their achievement as high school graduates. Then they participated in one of the school’s long time tradition of tossing their graduation caps into the air creating one final and joyful memory at Pace Spartans.

Sharon Wallen, Spanish Lake Elementary’s (SLE) fifth-grade teacher and her students won the 24 Annual HOPE Contest Elementary Class Division out of 124 school entries. Students are required to develop innovative campaigns to help raise awareness about the public’s roles as the stewards of domestic animals. This year, students were asked to develop messages about preventing and reporting animal cruelty. Miami-Dade County school board member Dr. Martin S. Karp founded and has sponsored this contest for the past 24 years. This year’s theme and research projects centered on student research on making pet ownership less expensive along with becoming a responsible pet owner. The students’ submissions included a video, a power-

point, flyers, a wall-sized ABC Chart relating to animal care and an original book titled TLC – Tender Loving Care. Each student wrote an original poem and illustration to support responsible pet ownership. The students also held massive drives for blankets, food and toys for the animal shelters. Their efforts were rewarded on May 21 at the Miami Dade Animal Services Department. They were not only surprised with the win but they were awarded four tickets to a Marlins game, a $50 Target gift card and a bag of goodies. In addition, for 24 years of dedication and support for The HOPE Contest, a surprise proclamation of thanks was given to their teacher Sharon Wallen. BGEC’s STEM team places in Nationals competition Barbara Goleman High School (BGHS) is proud to have been given the opportunity to have some of its STEM students participate in Nationals. After much struggle and hard work in raising the needed funding for them to participate in their first national competition, their efforts paid off. From April 26-27, they left to participate in a national competition at Texas A&M University. With more than 40 high schools participating from with-

in and outside of the United States, needless to say, they had their work cut out for them. Through their teamwork and sprit de corps, they placed ninth overall. Their students also received the rookie enterprise award and ranked second overall in pit challenge. They worked hard and gave it their all. Their commitment and dedication to being the best they could be was clearly visible throughout this competition.

Miami Lakes Congregational Church honors Rosa N. Hammer in 100th year

Members and friends of Miami Lakes Congregational Church-UCC (MLCC) paid tribute to long time member and Miami Lakes resident Rosa Nell Hammer during a special observance of her 100th birth year. Hammer was commemorated at a special luncheon at Trattoria Pampered Chef on April 27 where she was presented with a Resolution of Milestone by the MLCC Council. On April 28 during Worship Services, she received a Certificate of Recognition from Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmember Luis Collazo. A reception honoring Hammer was held following the service. The 100th Birthday Commemoration took place during MLCC’s 2nd annual “JOY” (Jesus’ Older Youth) Celebration weekend.

Frantz was the long time pastor of MLCC and former Miami Laker columnist of “Echoes of the Heart” who began his ministry in the Baptist tradition before becoming a minister in the United Church of Christ. He holds a Doctorate of Ministry degree from the Pacific School of Religion. Frantz and his wife, Yvette, have now retired and reside in Boynton Beach, Florida. His book will be available at the signing. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
