Dr. Olazabal makes return to Miami Lakes By Megan Medina The Miami Laker staff On June 7, Dr. Bertha M. Olazabal opened her office in Miami Lakes located at 5803 N.W. 151 street, suite 107. She specializes in Internal Medicine and has been practicing for over 30 years. Olazabal has always called Miami home. She graduated from Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High where she was the valedictorian in 1979. After graduation she stayed in Miami and opened her practice in Hialeah, where she was at for 29 years. Recently she decided to move her practice to Miami Lakes, she has always loved this town and it was the right time to make the move. Most of her

patients are happy with the move because the location is convenient and easier for them. Since her office is on the first floor and has plenty of parking the transition has been very smooth. Aside from her practice, Olazabal visits patients that are in nursing homes, at the hospital or at an adult living facility. She makes those visits monthly. Patients of hers that have been admitted to the hospital she checks in and treats them regularly. Olazabal wants to let Miami Lakes know that she’s back. She also stresses that everyone should have their preventive studies done once a year even if you are very healthy. Insurances cover all preventive

studies and she urges everyone to get checked out. Dr. Olazabal sees all patients from ages 15 and up, she is also bilingual. ceivable for a gun range or any

other business inrecap an industrial Town Council meeting area.

David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Despite a concern over a gun range open to the public adjacent to a dance school for kids in an industrial area that could jeopardize their safety, the Miami Lakes Town Council approved several zoning changes requested by the applicant so the indoor facility can operate a viable business. Andy’s Shooting Range, 14000 N.W. 82 Avenue, was initially strictly a training facility for police officers and academy cadets but lawmakers approved to allow the public to use the shooting range, extended the hours of operation on the weekend and increased the noise level to eight decibels. According to Susana Alonso, the town’s senior planner, the original agreement called for zero noise from outside the facility which was approved by the Town Council in 2015. But she said that’s incon-

“A ‘0’ noise level is impossible,” she told council members at their July 16 regular meeting. Alonso said Andy Perez’s modification requests meet the town’s code and other local and state requirements to operate his business in an industrial vicinity. The shooting range is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and council members extended the hours on the weekend from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. However, Miami Lakes residents and parents for Miami Dancity Studios students, which is located next to the pistol range, raised a safety concern since most kids walk in front of the firearm facility to gain access to the school. They felt safe when only police officers used the firing range but anyone from the public, especially an inexperience gun owner, can pose a threat to the students’ well being. Ariel Martinez, whose

daughter is a student at the dance school, said a public gun range in the Miami Lakes community is a bad idea. “People with no experience with a weapon is a concern,” Martinez said during a threehour debate. “Whenever you have the public with access to a gun range is a chemical for problems.” Martinez asked the council a question: “If you have children and grandkids, would you ask them to walk in front of a gun range? “ Yvonne Alvarez, who owns the dance school which opened in 1998 and enrolls 200 children, said she and the kids’ parents feel extremely uncomfortable with an indoor gun range that is now opened to civilians. “I don’t see how a shooting range can be open to the public in a community that has always been safe,” said Alvarez, who grew up in Miami Lakes and now lives in southwest MiamiDade. “A gun range open to the public changes everything.” The Town Council approved Andy Perez’s original zoning requests in 2015, but the configuration of the facility wasn’t suitable for his business. Council members approved nine modifications with several conditions including changing the positions of the shooting range stations. “I didn’t represent him in 2015 but he shouldn’t have agreed to these conditions,” said Javier Vazquez, Perez’s attorney. “He did everything right with the conditions approved by the council.” Vazquez, a longtime Miami Lakes resident, said his client would never jeopardize the

safety of kids and business owners in the town. He said Perez assured Miami Lakes that at least two licensed gun instructors will be on hand for customers, especially inexperienced gun owners, during the shooting range’s hours of operation. Vazquez said firearm experts will work one-on-one with people who lack the experience of shooting a gun, and the ammunition fired from a pistol only pierces the concrete wall inside the gun range, keeping people outside the facility out of harms way. “My client has procedures for customers without experience and people with concealed weapon permits to ensure the safety of the surrounding areas,” Vazquez said. “A shooting range is allowed in an industrial area and the council can’t use the existence of a school to deny his modifications.” Tucker Gibbs, a lawyer representing Raul Diaz, who owns the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) which is also near the shooting range, said changing the configuration of the facility and extending the hours of operation would further “hurt” his client’s company. He said the council approved the configuration in 2015 from east to west of the building, which causes a noise nuisance for his client, but the change from north to south would create even more noise. “That’s the issue we have tonight,” Gibbs said. “It’s disruptive to his business.” In other Town Council actioins: • Council members gave their final approval for an ordinance

that now prohibits overnight street parking for commercial vehicles within the town’s rightof-way adjacent to residential areas, parks and government buildings. • Council members gave their final approval for an ordinance to create a dockless mobility program to regulate deckles mobility programs and motorized scooters within Miami Lakes. • Council members approved a resolution for a memorandum of understanding for school based law enforcement officers with Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School. Last year in the wake of the Majorie Stoneman Douglas mass shooting, the town, as part of an agreement with the public school system, added officers at Bob Graham Education Center and Miami Lakes K-8 Center to protect students from gun violence. The agreement also included providing protection for private schools in Miami Lakes. The town has estimated the costs at $22,484 to assign a school resource officer at Our Lady of the Lakes. • Council members approved Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez’s proposal to name the new courtyard areas at Royal Oaks Park after Brenna Vergara. Vergara was 10 years-old when she died from a rare heart condition during dance class. Vergara has inspired several Miami Lakes regulations that require athletes and people participating in physical activities at the town’s parks and facilities get a cardiogram to detect any heart problems.

Town-VRAR program Together with Code Explorers, the Town of Miami Lakes is launching the world’s first Virtual/Augmented Reality Sustainability with Empathy curriculum for Kids in support of United Nations Sustaiinable Goals (UNSDG). In 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted a set of goals to improve quality of education, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years. For the goals to be reached, everyone needs to do their part: Governments, the private sector, civil society and the general population. In April 2019, The Children’s Trust in Miami awarded Code Explorers an Innovation Grant to develop the first sustainable and emphathy curriculum to teach students to create virtual and augmented reality content and storytelling while being educated about the UN Sustainable Goals.

Code Explorers and the Town of Miami Lakes will be the pioneers introducing this program to the community. The idea is to create community engagement around local issues and advocate for change. Virtual and Augmented Reality (VRAR) is a brand new user interface unlike any other immersing a person in a digital 3D environment instead of watching on a display. Computer-generated imagery and content aim at simulating a real presence through senses (sight, hearing, touch). Augmented Reality (AR) connects digital content with the real world merging the environments and creating new narratives. In current educational environment, virtual technologies have a place of value as they make it easier for students to understand and assimilate the information they are given. It’s much more exciting for students to learn by creating virtual content such as a virtual trip below the water while reading about it.

Schools budget approved Town-Summer The Miami-Dade School Board tentatively approved the school district’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2019-2020 budget during its July budget public hearing. Once again, taxpayers will see a decrease in the millage for nonreferendum (voted) revenue from 6.504 to 6.275. Although voters overwhelmingly approved an assessment in November solely to be used for teacher salaries and school security, taxpayers will only see an estimated increase of 0.415 mills, 45 percent lower than the 0.75 they voted for at the ballot box. The primary focus of the proposed $5.4 billion budget is that of continuing to improve student achievement as well as ensuring school safety, providing for students’ mental health needs and the protection of highly effective instructional staff. “We are once again delivering a values-based budget that prioritizes students and protects our workforce,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “Through the efforts of our visionary School Board and our financial team, the state-mandated and Board-controlled tax rates will be lower than last year’s, yet there will be increases to average teacher salaries, spending on safety and security, and

counseling and other mental health services.” Through the newly available revenue approved by the voters in the November referendum, the investment in safety and security of students will increase by $29 million, ensuring that a police officer will be present at every school. Proportional revenue from Safe Schools will be given to charter schools. More than $1 million will be allocated to increased counseling and mental health services. This budget increases teacher salaries by $211 million, resulting in an increase in the average teacher salary of more than 15 percent to above the national average and potentially the highest in the state. An additional $16 million will be made available for collective bargaining opportunities to increase non-referendum supported salaries. Additionally, affordable employee health care will be maintained. The Miami-Dade County School Board will hold the final public hearing and adopt the FY 2019-2020 budget on September 4, at 6 p.m., in the auditorium of the School Board Administration Building, 1450 N.E. 2 Avenue in Miami.

Lewis named to Butkus List FIU's Morgan chosen for off field award

SAGE LEWIS Florida International University and Monsignor Edward Pace High graduate Sage Lewis was named to the Butkus Award Watch List joining 50 other candidates as the Panther is recognized as one of the best linebackers in the nation. Each watch list contains 51 linebackers mirroring the legendary “51” pro jersey associated with the Award's namesake Dick Butkus who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history. The Collegiate Butkus Award watch list includes candidates from 39 universities including returning finalist

Dylan Moses of Alabama who won the 2016 high school Butkus Award and returning semifinalist Markus Bailey of Purdue. Semi-finalists will be named November 4, finalists November 25 and winners on or before December 10. Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement to win the award. Lewis was named the Conference USA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year last week, ahead of the C-USA Media Kickoff in Frisco, Texas. After making the move to middle linebacker in 2018, Lewis broke the school record in total tackles (132) and solos (83) while ranking first in the league for both of those categories. Lewis' 83 solos ranked 10t in the nation last season with that same number ranking third in the country among 2019 returnees. Lewis was awarded C-USA First Team honors -following his stellar junior campaign in 2018.

Out of the Darkness event

In honor Victor Ruiz, who committed suicide last year, the Town of Miami Lakes is holding “Out of the Darkness,” a suicide and mental health awareness event, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 10 at Picnic Park West, 15151 N.W. 82nd Avenue. Emily Wong, Ruiz’s best friend, is the brainchild for the event and she will take a break from studying abroad to see her vision come to life. Wong, who is a very outspoken, driven and smart young girl in this community, was a close friend of Victor Ruiz when he took his life. It was at the moment of his passing that she wanted to bring Suicide Awareness to her community. Last month, the Miami Lakes Town Council approved

the event following Ruiz’s friends and the Veterans Affairs Committee’s request to bring suicide awareness to the city and create programs to help people suffering from mental illnesses. The committee’s chairman, Nayib Hassan, said Miami Lakes should be ground zero for suicide prevention since mental health issues affect everyone in town. “We are losing individuals everyday to suicide,” he said last week during a Miami Lakes Town Council special meeting. “By bringing awareness, we may be able to save at least one person from suicide. We need to bring awareness to suicide in the community as a whole.” According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five children

between the ages of 13 and 18 have or will have a serious mental illness, and the average delay between onset of symptoms and intervention is 8 to 10 years. Suicide in the third leading cause of death in youth ages 10 to 24. NAMI is urging parents to get a referral to a mental health specialist if their children are showing any signs of out-ofcontrol, risk-taking behavior and using drugs or alcohol. Councilmember Luis Collazo, who’s co-sponsoring the suicide prevention event with Mayor Manny Cid, said Emily approached him for his support for the event. “And I will support it for a very lone time,” said Collazo, a mental health specialist. “Emily’s work is working.”

Troop 566 takes summer camping trip

Troop 566 which is located at Our Lady of the Lakes, recently took their summer camping trip to Michigan. Wilson Adiel Olivo, who is 11 years old and apart of troop 566 recalled always being interested in becoming a scout when he was younger. The summer camp trip took place from June 22 - 28 at Gerber Scout Reservation of Michigan.

They travelled by plane to Chicago and then by car until they reached their destination. There were other troops but troop 566 was the farthest from Michigan. They experienced everything from walking, running, making new friends and even earning merit badges. Overall the troop had a great experience.

MLK-8 says goodbye to longtime teacher

SUZANNE M. CHOOPANI Miami Lakes K-8 Center (MLK8) said goodbye to long time Miami Lakes resident and teacher, Suzanne M. Choopani, who retired in June after 35 years of service with Miami Dade County Public Schools. A former high school Spanish teacher, she began teaching in

the bilingual program at Henry M. Flagler Elementary School. Shortly after receiving her Masters degree in Reading from Florida International University, she became a curriculum coordinator at both the district and region offices. Always interested in school site positions, Choopani became an assistant principal at Brentwood Elementary and was promoted to principal of Springview Elementary in 1995. When her second child began kindergarten, she longed to be a classroom teacher again and work in her own community. She was transferred to MLK8 and primarily taught first grade for 17 years. Reflecting on her career she said, “Teaching at MLK8 was the best decision I ever made, I have so many happy memories of working with the young students, their parents and our wonderful staff. Thank you!"

THE MIAMI LAKER

Tips on how to transition from summer to school By Neyda Borges Special to The Miami Laker The first day of school is just around the corner and with it, comes the first-day jitters. Children may be anxious and excited about the change, new classroom, new teachers, new friends and maybe even a new school. The change can be a little daunting. But, it’s not just the kids who are nervous. The first day can be pretty nerve-racking for parents too. The best way to combat these stressors is to prepare, not just for the first day, but to set the groundwork for a successful school year. First, dress up, coordinate and organize. Shopping for school supplies can be a fun way to help kids get organized and gain some independence and responsibility. Sit down together to create a list of what they will need. Do they need a lunchbox? A new calculator?

Then, set some ground rules and allow kids to choose their own book bag, pencil case, water bottle and some basic school supplies. Color coordinating notebooks, folders and supplies might be fun and useful. Older kids who have several subjects and teachers, may find it helpful to coordinate what they need for each. Say, green folders for math and blue for reading. It may help to keep track of homework and assignments for each class. Have a walkthrough. A lot of the stress over the first day is the unknown. Combat that by getting familiar with the environment. Visit the school. Have them see where their classroom is, where the cafeteria is, where they will be picked up and dropped off. Whether someone is driving them to school or they are boarding a school bus, have a practice run. Everyone feels more confident once they know

where to go and what to expect. Set goals and get familiar with the curriculum. What will kids learn this year? A lot of this information is online on the parent portal, the school’s website and was likely provided at student orientation. Parents may not know what it’s like to be in school anymore. Not only has it been a while since they were students (and some of those math formulas may have slipped your mind since then), but the curriculum has changed a lot. Helping kids with their homework and working with them, is an effective way to show concern for what they learn at school and to get to know what their academic strengths and weaknesses are. This is also an excellent opportunity to discuss goals with older children. What does a successful year look like? What will it take to balance school work with sports and/or extra-curricular activities? Again, this is about preparation. Technology is not the enemy. Yes, kids are spending a lot of time online and that is not always a good thing. Too much screen time, whether that is watching television, playing video games, or engaging in social media, is not good for their health or emotional wellbeing. However, there are many free learning tools online, from apps to video tutorials, help kids find ways to enrich what they are learning at school. Routines are good. Like a standard bed time and morning wake-up call, having a routine, that includes homework, helps kids organize their time efficiently. What will they do when they get home: take a nap, have a snack? Whatever it is, make it

a habit. Set aside a designated place and time for homework every day, maybe the kitchen counter while dinner is prepared or a quiet space in the living room. Avoid distractions, like television and cell phones, during this time. Communicate. This is an opportunity to get to know who their friends are and what their interests are, but asking children about school also shows them that their parents value their education. Try to avoid general questions, like "How was your day?" These will most likely produce one-word answers (fine, okay and good tend to be the general answers), especially as kids get older. Instead, try specific questions, like What did you read in class today? Did you enjoy the story? Why or why not? Get to know teachers. Everyone is busy and it may be difficult to schedule a conference during school hours. Student orientation and open house nights are great opportunity to meet teachers, faculty and staff and to get a feel for what children are learning in school. But remember that you can always send an email if you have questions or concerns. Teachers spend a lot of time with our kids and they are great allies. If there are concerns, some parents worry that their children may be too shy and introverted or the opposite, too chatty and off task, or if parents have questions on including enrichment opportunities at home, their teachers can help. And teachers can often spot problems or irregularities (missed homework assignments, change in demeanor or disposition) that can be indica-

tive of a bigger problem. Read, read, read. Parents usually read to their babies and toddlers, but that habit does not have to end in elementary school. Reading with a child is an invaluable way to spend quality time together on a daily basis. As children get older and develop their own interests, help them foster that love of reading. Reading Harry Potter, for instance, as a family can be a great way to bond and promote the lifelong joy of reading. Sleep is important for learning and for optimal health. Studies indicate that Americans are not getting enough sleep, especially children. This chronic sleepiness does not just make kids cranky; it can be bad for their health. Lack of sleep impairs the brain, making it difficult to focus, remember and learn. This is not only important on the first day, when many families are getting reacquainted with an early morning alarm, but throughout the year. There will be projects and homework assignments, kids are notorious procrastinators. Make sure that they are not sacrificing sleep to finish up school work. School is stressful. It is where kids prepare for the future, where they experience some of their first triumphs and failures. Add to that all of the intellectual and physical changes that go along with adolescence and the result is a roller coaster of emotions, for them and their families. Working together to face those challenges will help make those life transitions a little smoother.

Miami Lakes Congregational Church is hosting a concert with the Old Dogs Band on Saturday, August 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the church, 6601 Miami Lakeway South, across from Miami Lakes K-8 Center. In a live performance, the Old Dogs Band will fuse old

and new school sounds with an electic blend of blues and rock’n roll music. A donation of $15 at the door includes the music, dancing and refreshments. For more information, call the church office at 305-822-4313.

Salah grant for Humane Society The Humane Society of Greater Miami received a generous donation from The Salah Foundation that will help save countless dogs and cats in need of a “second chance” at life. The funds were granted directly to the Humane Society’s “Second Chance Fund,” which is dedicated to helping the organization provide medical care to sick and injured pets admitted to their shelter. These are services that go above and beyond the standard preventive vaccines and medical care every animal receives in-shelter and are many times life-saving. “We are very grateful to The

Salah Foundation for this generous contribution to our Second Chance Fund,” says Laurie Hoffman, executive director at the Humane Society of Greater Miami. “We have limited medical capabilities at our own clinics and frequently have to send our pets to local animal hospitals for further treatment; some of these pets are even in critical condition. It is thanks to The Salah Foundation and other community members who donate to our Second Chance Fund that we are able to give them the help they desperately need.”

The Batchelor Foundation is helping to feed more Miami Dade College (MDC) students in need thanks to a $40,000 donation benefiting the MDC Student Food Pantries. The funds will help replenish supplies across the College’s student food pantries. The MDC Student Food Pantries, which stock nonperishable foods, toiletries and, when available, fresh produce, provide a means for college students to stay focused on their studies despite financial hardships. The program began at MDC’s North Campus in 2013 and today, about 8,000 lowincome students are regularly utilizing eight food pantries across the College’s campuses. With approximately 100,000 low-income students attending MDC each year the need far outweighs what pantries are currently able to provide. “This funding will help us sustain our MDC student food pantries and, in turn, ensure that students do not just start college but complete degrees,” says Sarah Garman, a faculty member who started the first student food pantry at North Campus in 2013. “The dividends to our community are vast.”
