Council approves budget on first reading including waste haulers fee By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff A proposal to reinstate a waste hauler fee in Miami Lakes was initially greeted with opposition at a budget hearing and voted down at a subsequent Town Council meeting, but got new life after one lawmaker changed his mind. Facing a $1 million deficit for 2014-2015, town staff suggested imposing a five percent franchise fee to help offset the budget shortfall by generating $50,000 a year for roadway improvements. But councilmembers opposed it at last week’s first budget hearing fearing the payment may lead to an additional tax for residents living in apartment complexes, townhomes and business owners. On the same night during a regular council meeting, lawmakers initially put the issue to rest by

narrowly rejecting an ordinance to restore the franchise fee. Vice Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmembers Tony Lama, Ceasar Mestre and Frank Mingo cast the dissenting votes, while Mayor Slaton and Councilmembers Nelson Rodriguez and Tim Daubert supported the measure. But Mestre later changed his mind and made a motion to reconsider his vote and the council discussed the polarizing issue on first reading of the ordinance. Mestre, who embraced the fee at the budget hearing, said he wrestled with his ambivalence over the charge but changed his vote for two reasons. No public opposition on the matter during the budget hearing, and he didn’t want to tie the hands of Town Manager Alex Rey and his staff to find $50,000 when they

already were instructed to find another $50,000 to restore the expenses of town’s committees by the second budget hearing. “This is one fee I have a dilemma with but since this is first reading I don’t want to tie the town manager’s hands at this point,” Mestre said. “We all made it well known that $50,000 could be found elsewhere in the budget. Unlike the previous attempt to reinstate the fee, we have not heard any opposition or residents not wanting the franchise fee. Based on those two reasons, I will be changing my vote from no to yes.” But Lama, Cid and Mingo stood behind their vote. Cid, who owns a business in Miami Lakes, said he is torn by

Overwhelming vote for the election of Perla T. Hantman for sixth term on School Board Perla Tabares Hantman, a longtime resident of the Town of Miami Lakes, was recently elected with an outstanding 81 percent of the vote to her sixth term as a member of the Miami-Dade County School Board where she represents District 4, and is currently serving as its chair for the seventh time. Throughout her many years of public service on the School Board, Hantman has worked hard in improving the District’s level of academic achievement, increasing the graduation rate to an all-time high of 77.2 percent (higher than the state’s average), strengthening bilingual education programs, bringing new technology to the classroom, upgrading student safety and traffic programs, significantly increasing the number of magnet programs include Cambridge, and closely monitoring District finances where administrate ranks have been reduced by 50 percent all along while protecting the classroom, where not a single full-time teacher has been dismissed for financial reasons.

During her tenure on the School Board, and as a result of working as a team with the Superintendent and other Board colleagues, the District, under her chairmanship, has received numerous national and state awards recognizing Miami-Dade County Public Schools as one of the most efficiently and effectively-run school districts in the nation.

Troop 49 faces 50th anniversary looking to replace stolen gear By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes’ Boy Scout Troop 49 will celebrate its 50th anniversary in December, a milestone that commenced two years after the Graham family first developed the community in 1962. But the group hasn’t had much to celebrate as of late after someone burglarized the troop’s trailer in Davie and stole tents, sleeping bags and other equipment all valued at $5,000. The theft left most of the boys discouraged and they quit the group, leaving only five members. Despite having no camping equipment, the scouts went on a camping trip where they slept on picnic tables. The heart-wrenching story first came to light on Channel 7 News

several weeks ago when Miami Lakes Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez learned of the boys’ hardship and help launched a fund-raiser to replace their camping equipment and other items. “It was brought to my attention when I am watching the news and here pops up one of the scouts who goes to school with my son,” Rodriguez said during the September 9 regular Town Council meeting. “He said he had to sleep on a picnic table without a sleeping bag and without a tent. They are down to five boys.” Councilmembers approved his recommendation to help the troop with the fund-raiser and find space somewhere in the town for the Boy Scouts to store their trailer.

More than 200 people honored veterans by attending the September 4 unveiling ceremony of the new Veterans Memorial in front of Miami Lakes Town Hall. The ceremony, organized by the Town’s Veterans Committee, included a Presentation of the Colors, reading of a proclamation from the Mayor and Town Council, and the unveiling of the commemorative bricks placed on the pathway leading to the Memorial. James E. Deming, CWO-4 United States Army, a WWII veteran who served in the Constabulary Forces in Germany, delivered a memorable speech filled with personal stories and words of encouragement.

New Life opens Wellness Center in Miami Lakes New Life Healthcare and Wellness Center, located at 14750 N.W. 77 Court, Suite 106 in Miami Lakes, held a grand opening celebration on Thursday, September 18. Community members had the opportunity to learn more about the latest technology, the staff, and the center's board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Patrick Abuzini.

“On this day, our community came together to honor the brave men and women in the armed forces,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “This memorial, proudly displayed in front of our Town Hall, is a great tribute to their sacrifice and service to our country.” The artwork, entitled “V is for Veterans,” was created by artist Stephanie Jaffe Werner to honor all five of the U.S. military branches – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. A professional advisory committee made up of local arts professionals was formed and with the support of the town’s Veterans Committee, selected Jaffe’s artwork to adorn Town Hall. “This monument recognizes all the brave men and women who signed a blank check payable to the United States of America up to the amount of their life,” said First Class Petty Officer USCG Angel Luis Vazquez, chair of the Veterans Committee. “I want to commend the members of the Veterans Committee who are dedicated and worked tirelessly to bring this Veterans Memorial project to the Town of Miami Lakes.” There is still time to purchase a commemorative brick to honor a loved one, for your family or your company, for the Veterans Memorial. Town Council pitches in for funds to replace Scout gear (Continued from Page 1) “Find a location for them to park their trailer in the town and in a safe location,” Rodriguez said. “And help raise funds to replace their equipment so they can make it to the big Jamboree. These guys are doing something good. The Boy Scouts keep them off the streets.” Mayor Wayne Slaton said he wrote a check in the amount of $100 for the troop and encouraged councilmembers to do the same. “I didn’t realize they were down to five boys,” Slaton said. “It shouldn’t take that much to get them some tents and sleeping bags to get them started again.” Slaton said Troop 49 goes way back, chartered by the Miami Lakes Civic Association and longtime Miami Lakes resident Carl Mosher was the group’s first Scout Master. He said for years the troop met and stored its equipment in the building at Miami Lakes Picnic Park East until the park went

under construction in 2012 to make way for a new youth center. “I don’t understand why the troop was displaced,” Slaton said. “It’s always been a Miami Lakes troop.” Councilmember Frank Mingo, who ran unopposed this year, said he also will write a check for $100 and donate funds left over from his campaign. Councilmember Tim Daubert recalled his Boy Scout Troop 373 in North Miami entangled in a series of competitions with Troop 49. “I can remember for years challenging them to a gateway competition,” Daubert said. “You can count on me for a check, and if you have a fund-raiser, you can count on me.” Rodriguez said helping the Boy Scouts shows Miami Lakes cares about kids. Year. Spiegel, born in Germany to Holocaust survivors, finds it easiest to categorize her life in “chapters,” Cold Stone being her latest endeavor. For the first chapter of her life, Spiegel lived in Israel and grew up in Toronto until she bumped into an out-of-place New Yorker in Canada and married him. Fortyseven years later Spiegel and her husband, Fred, are living comfortably and happily in sunny Florida, enjoying the waves on their boat, after spending decades in New York City where Spiegel worked as a college professor for 17 years. Spiegel has always been committed to education, a passion that shines through even today with the many activities and educational funding her Cold Stone franchises do with local schools. She earned her bachelor’s in Psychology from Hunter College after transferring from York University in Canada. She received her M.B.A with a concentration in management, a useful tool for later running various businesses, from Long Island University and an A.B.D. in organization and policy studies from Baruch College. She became a consultant for the Center of Management Analysis at William Patterson College and Long Island University and following, a faculty member for the Department of Management at Long Island University's School of Business. Spiegel’s area of interests have always been broad. At her hus-

band’s urging, Spiegel became a certified scuba diver, diving in locations such as Papua, New Guinea. Later, after her son suggested she look into franchising the popular ice creamery by his neighborhood in California, Spiegel, her husband, her son and her son’s wife partnered to bring the flavors of Cold Stone to South Florida. “The boat is gone and now we are up to our eyeballs in ice cream,” said a chuckling Spiegel. “We’ve immersed ourselves in the South Florida community and it has become our home. We love our stores, and Miami Lakes has been wonderful to us.” After diving headfirst into education, then business management and marketing, literally diving to the depths of the Papua, New Guinea coast, owning various businesses with her husband and franchising Cold Stone in South Florida, one need not try hard to explain why Spiegel would be one of SFBJ’s Influential Business Women of the Year. However, it is a title Spiegel insists was not earned alone, attributing her successes to her hardworking family members and her effective management team which allows her to devote time to public relations and branding. She is also quick to note that with success comes the responsibility to be an active and giving member of the community. “We don’t operate in a vacuum,” Spiegel said. “We started affiliating ourselves with nonprofit organizations and schools. You become acquainted with peo-

Spiegel is also a member of Junior Achievement's Circle of Wise Women. “Ice cream is not a difficult sell. I speak the universal language of smiles,” said Spiegel. “Give someone something so fabulous, they can't help but be happy.” Cold Stone Creamery, located at 6723 Main Street in Miami Lakes, is open Sunday through Thursday from 12 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Town committees request keeping budgets whole (Continued from Page 1) the issue but is hoping the town manager can resolve it to benefit residents instead of taxing them. “At this point I still can’t support it,” he said. “But I look forward to the town manager sitting down with the business owners as part of an equitable system because this is beyond taxation. Is it equitable for our residents?” Mingo said he vehemently opposes levying any additional taxes to residents and business owners. “I can’t support it,” he said at the budget hearing. “It is a burden on multi-families and businesses.” The town suspended the fee in 2001, which was 15 percent, because the town increased the rate for property taxes and deemed the franchise fee unfair to residents and business owners. Slaton said the franchise fee should be restored because it’s time for the waste haulers to pay their fair share to Miami Lakes, and it wouldn’t place a financial burden on residents and town employers. “The issue is not direct to residents or the town,” he said. On behalf of Miami Lakes, Slaton said Miami-Dade collects the payments from the same companies doing business in the town but keeps the money. Slaton said the $50,000 in rev-

enues would help repair the town’s roads that are being damaged by the waster haulers’ trucks. “If we are not charging them, we are paying for the roads,” said Slaton. “To me, it’s a matter of who is responsible and who should pay for it. It’s the waste haulers.” A public hearing and final vote for the ordinance is scheduled for October 7. Also for the $15.8 million budget, town staff was given marching orders to find $50,000 to restore monies for the town’s committees following their plea to not cut their funding. Lynn Matos, chairwoman of the Youth Activities Task Force (YATF), said the $15,000 that was cut from their budget can do wonders, including expanding the Scavenger Hunt program, which has become popular in Miami Lakes, and the new board games at the Mary Collins Center. “I don’t ask for much but this is for the kids,” she said. Nancy Rodgers, a member of the Elderly Affairs Committee, asked councilmembers to recover the $10,000 in the group’s budget to keep the senior field trips to the Miami Marlins home games as part of the town’s partnership with the organization, and the Meet and Eat events. Neil Robinson, chairman of the Cultural Affairs Committee, also

requested the same budget from last year, saying Miami Lakes wants to continue to make the Fourth of July the best event in South Florida. “This year was the largest celebration in the town’s history,” he said. “The police and town did a great job to make sure the event went very well.” Daubert said Miami Lakes can find the money for the committees starting with cutting $132,000 in expenses to build an entrance feature at N.W. 67 Avenue near 138 Street. In support of the franchise fee during the budget hearing, Mestre suggested using $35,000 of the money for a joint venture marketing program with two of the biggest landowners in Miami Lakes. The left over funds, $15,000, and a total of $29,000 in savings he and Rey cut in the budget for town’s financial institution fees ($5,000), a garbage contract ($4,000), public works permit costs ($8,000) and town engineer fees ($15,000), can be used for the committees. Mestre, a member of the town’s Economic Development Committee, said each party would submit a budget of about $35,000 for an advanced marketing plan to bring new restaurants and retail businesses to the town and help fill

vacancies on Main Street and other shopping centers. Lama, however, opposed using the money for marketing and instead would rather it be used to restore the funding for the committees. Based on the recommendation of Cid, councilmembers agreed to spend about $50,000 in carryover money for a canopy cover for Royal Oaks Park, which has gone unfunded in the town’s short-term capital program for several years. Slaton agreed, saying the recreation activities without the structure is a health issue for kids. At the budget hearing, councilmembers unanimously approved the property tax rate of 2.3518, which would generate about $7.5 million in ad valorem revenue, and the budget for the next fiscal year.

The $1 million budget shortfall was caused by a reduction in franchise and utilities revenues ($400,000), and a four percent increase ($600,000) for police services for union concessions. Miami Lakes’ contact with Miami-Dade for public safety services will cost the town $7.2 million for next year. The town begins the year with a fund balance of $4 million, placing 15 percent of the fund, $2.3 million, in emergency reserve, and an additional $500,000 reserved for hurricane emergencies. The new fiscal year commences on October 1. The second and final budget hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, September 23 at Town Hall.

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes September 9 Council Meeting summary Veterans Committee extends The Miami Laker staff As Miami Lakes begins to implement the first major project of its Beautification Master Plan, the Town Council opposed a contract it deemed too expensive for a gateway feature near the south entrance of the town. At the September 9 regular meeting, councilmembers were prepared to vote on a $132,000 contract with ABC Construction to build the entrance feature for at N.W. 67 Avenue and 138 Street. But lawmakers said the amount for the work was too high compared to previous gateway features erected at an estimated $75,000 each. Councilmember Tony Lama recommended Town Manager Alex Rey to renegotiate a new contract at a reduced rate, and if not successful, Miami Lakes should manage the project inhouse to allow the manager to execute agreements with subcontractors. “I would like to see it under $100,000,” Lama said. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre said: “How about $60,000 to $70,000?” In other Town Council news: • The Council gave their final approval for an ordinance to adopt the Lien Amnesty Program for code enforcement, which now helps residents with a lien on their properties to bring the violations up to code at reduced rates. The measure includes an 85 percent reduction for residentowned properties and a 75 percent reduction for all other properties. Owners must file a $70 application

fee with the town first to be considered for the Amnesty Program. • Councilmembers on first reading approved an ordinance to adopt two new fees for building, zoning fees, shop drawings and residential minimum permit fees to cover $188,956 in losses for next year based on the rising costs for expenses in the Building Department. • Lawmakers approved a resolution to increase the special event application processing fee from $50 to $100, and to increase the special event application processing fee to $500 for applications submitted less than one week from the date of the event. • Councilmembers approved a resolution, sponsored by Mayor Wayne Slaton, to proclaim October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Miami Lakes will explore activities and events, including Town Hall going pink and participating in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides of Miami-Dade scheduled on Saturday, October 11. • Councilmembers passed a resolution to approve the town’s Committee of the Whole’s recommendation to honor the 150th anniversary of “In God We Trust. • Councilmembers approved Vice Mayor Manny Cid’s resolution to request that Miami-Dade 911 dispatchers begin accepting text messages. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez’s recommendation for Miami Lakes to provide financial support to Boy Scouts Troop 49 after the group’s

trailer was burglarized and items and equipment valued at $5,000 were stolen. Rodriguez suggested providing assistance in receiving donations at Town Hall and possibly assist in locating a secure location in the town for the troop’s trailer. The troop on many occasions has been the town’s Color Guard at the regular Town Council meetings. • Councilmembers approved Cid’s recommendation for Slaton to arrange a meeting with representatives of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department Station 1, 16999 N.W. 67 Avenue, and see what can be done to prevent motorists from blocking the facility’s driveway that causes a delay in emergency response time. Cid suggested possibly placing warning lights outside the station that flashes when an emergency call is placed, or paint the road stripes adjacent to the station. • In July, the Town Council adopted a resolution that authorized the town manager to award contracts with a value not to exceed $100,000 during the August Town Council recess. One contract was awarded to Progressive Waste Solutions of FL, Inc. in the amount of $33,936 annually, which generated a savings of $4,752 per year when compared to the previous contract. A second contract was awarded to Skyline Construction and Restoration Corp. in the amount of $86,735, for selective demolition work for the Youth Center at Miami Lakes Picnic Park East.

Miami Lakes Councilmember Frank Mingo recently completed the Florida League of Cities and the John Scott Dailey Florida Institute of Government’s Institute for Elected Municipal Officials Program (IEMO). The educational program is specifically designed for newly elected officials and those with less than one term in office. “Attending the seminar was a great learning experience and I am looking forward to attending the advanced course next year,” Mingo said. The primary objective of the IEMO program is to provide elected municipal officials with an intensive academic program that will assist them in effectively meeting the requirements of their elected role. The Program offers a comprehensive overview of Florida municipal government and is presented by a faculty of top professionals in the field.

Town opens Lien Amnesty Program on October 1 Town of Miami Lakes now offers a Code Enforcement Lien Amnesty Program as an incentive to property owners with outstanding liens to bring their property into compliance, and become eligible for as much as an 85 percent reduction in the amount owed on their lien. Both residential and commercial property owners are eligible to apply. “I wanted a way for residents or business owners to find out if they have a lien, before it became an issue for them to refinance or sell their property,” said Councilmember Tim Daubert, who initiated the program. “If they do have a lien, I wanted to find a way to help reduce their costs and streamline the procedure to resolve the issue.” The application period starts October 1, and runs to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2015. The deadline will be strictly enforced with no exceptions. Applications can be submitted to the Town of Miami Lakes Neighborhood Services Department. There is a non-refundable $70 application fee.

Approved applicants will have 15 days from the date of the application is approved to pay the reduced lien amount. Once the reduced lien amount and any ineligible liens are paid in full, a satisfaction and discharge of lien will be issued by the Town Manager and/or his designee. Liens given from fines related to burglar alarms, business tax receipts, and special assessments, are not eligible. Additionally, if the Town has started a civil action to collect on civil penalties or to foreclose a lien, the property owner will be ineligible for participation in the program. If a property owner is not sure if they have a lien, they can log onto the Town’s website at www.miamilakes-fl.gov and click on “Search for Violations.” The case would be indicated as “LIEN” status in the system. For more information on the Lien Amnesty Program, contact the Neighborhood Services Department at LienAmnesty@ miamilakes-fl.gov, or by calling 305-512-7130.

FDOT is design stage for several projects along the Palmetto Xway The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six is developing the design for two roadway projects along SR 826/Palmetto Expressway, in northwest Miami-Dade County. The limits of the projects extend along the Palmetto from east of N.W. 57 Avenue to west of N.W. 27 Avenue, and from west of N.W. 27 Avenue to west of N.W. 17 Avenue, affecting residents and motorists in the City of Miami Gardens and the Town of Miami Lakes. The projects will cost an estimated $12.6 million with construction expected to start in April 2016 and last about 10 months. A public information meeting was held on Wednesday, September 17, at the North Dade Regional Library, with graphic displays and FDOT representatives available to discuss the projects and answer questions. The projects include repaving and restriping the frontage road at N.W. 167 Street, widening the frontage road from N.W. 167 Street to provide a 5-foot bicycle lane, extending the eastbound right land at N.W. 47 Avenue exit ramp, upgrading pedestrian ramps to current standards, providing minor drainage improvements, updating signage and pavement markings, repairing a bridge, and installing visual guards to concrete median to enhance safety. The question theater patrons in Miami Lakes are asking is, “How are they going to do that?” Do what? you wonder. “How are the Main Street Players taking the large-scale Broadway award winning musical, Spring Awakening, and make it work in their intimate theater?” Design genius is the only fitting answer. Under the guidance of set designer Michael Stopnick, technical director Dennis Lyzniak and lighting designer, Marcelo Ferreira, the stage is being transformed. Continuing the effort are costume designer, Josette Gillete, choreographer, Cameron Jordan, musical director, Andrew Gilbert, and show director, Liz Dikinson, as well as the many volunteers. Based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 play, Spring Awakening is a story of teenage self-discovery and sexuality under the repressive, provincial backdrop of late 19th century Germany. The show, which launched the career of Lea Michelle of Glee, with score by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, was nominated in 2007 for 11 Tony Awards including wins for Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book. The show’s electricity is built around the relationships of the 11 teen characters as they navigate the journey from youth to adulthood. Director Liz Dikinson warns that scenes contain mature themes, sexual situations and strong language and it is recommended for only patrons 14-years-old and above. Those strolling down Main Street later this month will surely feel the high voltage energy being generated by the music and cast as

Jennifer Cisne opens Bk’lyn Boutique at the Lake Patricia Shopping Center By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Bk’lyn Boutique, located at 13973 N.W. 67 Avenue in the Lake Patricia Shopping Center, officially opened on Saturday, August 30. Jennifer Cisne, a new business owner but a retail and graphic design veteran, is the force behind Bk’lyn Boutique. Cisne attended high school at Grand Street Campus in Brooklyn, New York and then attended a trade school, Wood-Tobe Coburn, in Manhattan where she studied Graphic Design. Though growing up in Brooklyn, Cisne often visited her father in Miami Lakes. “I love the Town,” said Cisne. “It’s such a nice family community and once I had my own children I knew I wanted to raise them here, so why not serve the community I admire?” After working for a New York chain retail store and as a Children’s Apparel designer, Cisne didn’t feel satisfied. “I always thought in the back of my mind how I would love to be involved in retail again somehow.”

The death of her mother, Evelyn, from cancer earlier this year gave Cisne the courage to pursue her passion. “I decided to go for what I really knew would make me happy.” Bk’lyn Boutique was born. The unique spelling of the store name combines “BK” which are the initials for Brooklyn, where Cisne and her mother lived, and “Lyn” a shortened version of Evelyn, her mother's name. Upon the creation of the store name, Cisne knew it was perfect. She considers Bk’lyn Boutique her newborn, an addition to her 5 year-old son Damian, and 3-yearold daughter Madison. The new children’s boutique will feature stylings hand-picked by Cisne for boys and girls including tops, bottoms, dresses, bodysuits, bibs, blankets, backpacks, hair accessories, organic options and more. None of the items featured in Bk’lyn Boutique are bought in bulk so customers can rest assured they are purchasing an affordable, unique item. Bk’lyn Boutique has clothing from around the world

Pace High’s annual Spartan Fishing Tournament yields its best year ever By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Pace High School students, alumni, and their families came together for last month’s Sixth Annual Spartan Fishing Tournament at La Siesta Resort in Islamorada. Guests, guides, and sponsors turned up for the tournament on August 2223 on 30 boats and over 140 anglers. Team Leung with Captain Jared Raskob took home the Inshore Division First Place trophy while Team Garcia and Florin with Captain James Chappell won the Offshore Division First Place trophy. The fishing tournament raised money for the Pace Anglers Club and the Spartans-4-Spartans Program, which helps Pace families cover education expenses during times of extreme hardship. The event was sponsored by Quality Aircraft Parts, Inc. Other major sponsors included marine artist David Wirth, Ray Dass Test Prep, and Scott Robins Companies. “It was definitely our best year yet,” said Scott Giberson, a Pace science teacher and moderator of the Anglers Club who helped organize the tournament. “We greatly appreciate the incredible support we get throughout the year from sponsors, fishing guides, experts, friends, and family.”

Hialeah Miami Lakes retakes coveted Big-T trophy with 34-0 win over Hialeah High Hialeah Miami Lakes’ football team won the much-coveted BigT Trophy against cross-town rival Hialeah following a nine-year drought and picked up its first win of the season. American High and Goleman weren’t so lucky, as the Patriots fell to defending state champions South Dade (2-1) and Southridge routed Goleman in Miami-Dade football action last week. The Trojans (1-2) captured the Big-T Trophy will a 34-0 blow out against the Thoroughbreds (0-3) to give new head coach Horane Allison his first victory of the season. Trojans’ Simino Walden kicked things off in the first quarter with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and the Trojans engineered a five-touchdown assault that was too much for Hialeah. American dropped to 1-1 following a 23-14 defeat at the hands of the Buccaneers (2-1) despite turning the ball over four times and four lead changes. South Dade held on to a two-

point lead, as the Patriots were in scoring position but senior Doyle Grimes delivered a hit, recovered the fumble and returned it for a touchdown on 72 yards. Patriots Darius Rolle picked-up a fumble and picked-off South Dade’s quarterback twice to give his team a chance but the Buccaneers defense wouldn’t allow the offense to capitalize off the mistakes. South Dade’s quarterback P.J Coats sealed the game with a 10yard touchdown run. The Spartans (2-1) handed Goleman (0-2) its second loss of the season with 33-0 victory that saw running back Freddie Pinder, who rushed 112 yards, run for a 45-yard touchdown. Then, Rodney Scott ran for a 44-yard touchdown and back-up quarterback Shawn Chandler ran for a 50-yard touchdown. Southridge’s quarterback Jerry Drakar threw for 209 yards. Goleman gave up over 200 yards rushing.

Shula’s Senator’s Cup copies famous Ryder Cup format By Peter Wyndorf Asst. Golf Professional Shula's Golf Club Special to The Miami Laker On September 26-28, golf and sports enthusiasts are in for a rare treat, one that comes only once every two years. The Ryder Cup is back. The Ryder Cup is a biennial match between two 12-men teams, representing the United States and Europe. Originating in 1927, the matches are played every two years, alternating between a course in the United States and a course in Europe. At Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes, the Ryder Cup format is recreated in the form of the Senator’s Cup. All year long, members attempt to qualify for this prestigious event played in January. Of all the events enjoyed by Shula’s Golf Club members, the

Senator’s Cup is by far the most coveted. The weekend is identical to the Ryder Cup, right down to special uniforms, point system, honor and sometimes crazed enthusiasm. What’s the biggest difference between Ryder Cup golf and typical Sunday afternoon golf? Team spirit. These top players in the world are playing for the Cup only; there is no money to be won. They are playing for their nation, for honor, and bragging rights to hold the Cup for the following 2 years. This year’s Ryder Cup matches will take place at The Gleneagle Hotel in Scotland, and in 2016, will be played in the United States at Hazeltine National in Minnesota. Tune into the Ryder Cup on TV or watch the Senator’s Cup at Shula’s in January.

A live and silent auction will feature prizes including dining, entertainment, fashion, art, fitness, a three night stay at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Mexico or the Dominican Republic, and a trip to Seaworld. The funds raised through the event contribute toward ensuring at-risk women in South Florida receive services that the WBHI provides including health education and mammograms through targeted door-to-door outreach, screening, and/or treatment. “The ‘B fore Pink’ Golf Tournament has become an important annual event for WBHI,” said Andrea Ivory, executive director. “Thanks to the generosity of the many people who make it successful, we are able to continue our efforts to make a difference through awareness, education and screening.” For more information on WBHI visit www.flbreasthealth. com.

By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff The Capstone program at Barbara Goleman Senior High School has received such positive results it was named a flagship school by College Board last year. Now as the first founding class of Capstone students begin their senior year, 21 students are already a year advanced having completed the three year program in two at the close of junior year. The students, aptly named AP (advanced placement) Scholars, received this distinction for their enrollment and passing grades on AP examinations which required three advanced placement courses of their choosing, an AP seminar course to be completed in their sophomore year, and an AP research course along with a 20 page research paper to be completed in their junior year. Among the 21 students that received this honor were seniors Nicolas Rose, Danny Xie, Abhilash Muthyala, Stephanie Diaz, Kirsten Cabarcas, Anthony Dally, Nathali Arenas, Gabriella Sallai,

Claudia Alonso, Kaitlin Castillo, Antonio Valdes, Alex Llerena, Jessica Costero and Ashley Osorio. Additionally, Goleman celebrated students who received perfect scores on the End-of-Course (EOC) examinations which included Steven Ledon, Michael Vidal, Christina Morales, Alexander Barrera, Amanda Calderon, Melissa Capote, Melissa Fernandez, and Jalal Salas. In addition to completing the Capstone requirements early, the AP Scholars have an advantage over other college applicants since the Capstone requirements have been completed in time to be included before applications are submitted. Many of the Capstone AP Scholars have already sent in applications to state schools and will continue to do so during the year, many of whom hope to attend prestigious universities. “Harvard would be nice,” said Senior Class president and AP Scholar Alec Llerena with a chuckle. For additional information contact the school at 305-362-0676.

Two Goleman High seniors earn JPMorgan Chase grants

Spanish Lake Elem. principal takes Ice Bucket Challenge

By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman seniors Kevhani Hicks and Meiby Rivero spent their summers working as interns, but their five weeks soon proved to be worth more than just the valuable experience when they received surprise grants from JPMorgan Chase. The financial organization funded a $100,000 grant for the internship program managed by Miami-Dade County Public Schools open to students participating in the National Academy Foundation (NAF). NAF career academy programs include engineering, information technology, finance, hospitality and tourism and health science. The internship program aimed to help students gain experience in their preferred field of work. Additionally interns receive college credit and access to mentoring. Hicks and Rivero were among the 500 students selected in the internship program to receive a $1,000 grant to be used without stipulation. Hicks already planned to put her share in her student

Spanish Lake Elementary’s (SLE) principal, Jacqueline AriasGonzalez, along with other staff members, participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge is a viral phenomenon which encourages people to donate to the ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Association or to pour a bucket of ice water over their heads, though many choose to complete the ice challenge and still donate. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. SLE's faculty, staff, and PTA hope to raise awareness and a better understanding of ALS and to raise funds to help lead to treatment. The challenge was accepted in honor of Deb Gaudet who is afflicted with ALS. Gaudet is a former Dade County teacher forced to retire due to ALS. She

credit union account which is managed by Goleman students within the NAF finance program. “It's convenient to deposit it in my credit union account since I’m already at school five days out of the week,” said Hicks. “It also gives my classmates the chance to learn how to manage those accounts.” “It’s a symbiotic relationship,” noted Laura Rodriguez, lead teacher for the NAF Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. Hicks interned at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus as part of the Culinary and Hospitality department, a strategic move to expose herself to the college's layout, student life and administration, as she will be attending college next year. Rivero interned at a pediatrician's office based in Miami Lakes with Dr. Enrique Canton where she completed a variety of clerical work and worked with children by taking their height and weight. Rivero searched for a pediatric office since she is interested in pursuing pediatric or neonatal medicine.

Miami-Dade School Board approves two proposals by Perla T. Hantman

Dade Christian School promotes ‘Keeping It Real’ What does it mean to “Keep It Real?” At the start of the new school year, Dade Christian School (DCS) polled some of its students and faculty members about what “Keeping It Real” means to them. Their responses: • “To be honest with yourself and who you are.” • “Being faithful and being truthful with yourself and your peers.” • Having faith in God and being real with yourself and others around you.” • Being who you are and not trying to be something you’re not.” • Being who God has called you to be.” As a Christian school, the goal at DCS is to be passionate about loving God and loving people, and that students would have a desire to live each day with integrity and authenticity, and to always “keep it real!” DCS opened the 2014-2015 school year under the guidance of newly appointed leaders Susan Alexander and Dr. Monique Cummings. All of its faculty, from kindergarten to 12th grade, have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher an are FACCS certified. DCS is located at 6601 N.W. 167 Street, just north of Miami Lakes. For more information, or to schedule a tour of the campus, contact the Admissions Office at 305-827-8767.

The School Board unanimously approved two agenda items proposed by School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman endorsing October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools and National Teen Driver Safety Week on October 19-25. In 2014 alone, an estimated 232,670 women will be newly diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the U.S. An estimated 15,480 of those new cases will be

diagnosed among women in Florida. “This month is dedicated to highlighting the importance of early detection of breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related fatalities in American women,” said Hantman. “I am also proud to bring forward an initiative that encourages teenagers to change risky driving behaviors at the high school-age level and help save lives across the country.”

Florida Lions Eye Bank hosts Beauty of Sight reception at Perez Museum The Beauty of Sight reception, recently held at the Perez Art Museum Miami, ushered in a new era for the Miami-based Florida Lions Eye Bank. Friends and supporters of the 52-year-old nonprofit organization that has helped restore the sight of nearly 60,000 people celebrated the launch of the eye bank’s renewed brand and announced a series of marketing and communications initiatives. Amid the art and architecture of the museum, more than 100 supporters applauded the future direction of the organizations, including an updated logo, increased awareness through expanded digital and social media, community outreach and special events. Among the attendees were local ophthalmologists, hospital administrators, elected officials, representatives from South Florida medical examiners officers, and board members from Lions Clubs throughout the region. “This was an opportunity to thank our supporters and unveil both our new brand and community initiatives within a beautiful setting,” said Medical director Sander Dubovy, M.D. Executive director Elizabeth Fout-Caraza announced partnerships with the Miami Marlins, Jungle Island, and a 5K run with the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency. Sponsors for the evening were Wells Fargo Private Bank, The Lubitz Financial Group and the Marlins Foundation.

Three Pace High students attend Boys State program By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Pace High School students Matthew Arrojas, Lucas Garcia, and Daniel Gonzalez went up to Tallahassee over the summer to learn about state government through the Boys State program. Boys State, a leadership program sponsored by the American Legion, allows high school juniors to take part in mock government sessions and learn more about Florida’s history, government, and law. On the trip, the boys got to sit in the chambers of the Florida House of Representatives and act as members of a mock govern-

ment for a 51st State. They each won positions in government and were able to create, debate, and vote on bills. All three also took trips to the state capital and Florida State University. Gonzalez says that he learned a lot about not only state government, but also about other students his age from around Florida. “All the different people that I met from the trip showed me that a person my age can make a difference,” said Gonzalez. “Hearing about all the different things [the other students] do in their communities made me want to get more involved in my school and community.”
