Seat 3 race pits Elizabeth Delgado vs. Tony Lama By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Councilmember Tony Lama is running for reelection and his opponent is a former state attorney and assistant attorney general. Elizabeth Delgado is challenging the incumbent for Seat 3 on the

Miami Lakes Town Council in the November 8 general election. Lama and Delgado submitted their candidate questionnaire to The Miami Laker discussing the campaigning experience on the issues residents want them to resolve if elected. Delgado is 52 years old and has

been living in Miami Lakes since 1981. She is married and has two children who attend Miami Lakes K8 Center and Monsignor Edward Pace High School. She is a former state prosecutor and an assistant attorney general, practicing law for more than 24 years. “I have lived in Miami Lakes for over 35 years and I am seeking the office of Miami Lakes Town Council Seat 3 because I love this community and believe I can make a positive difference,” Delgado said. “Unlike my opponent, who has a cadre of professional campaign consultants, I am running the Miami Lakes way, with only family and neighbors helping.” Delgado said as an assistant state attorney and assistant attorney general, she decided herself to protect the people of Florida by ensuring that “our” constitution was followed and that the public was protected from violent criminals. “Throughout my career, I have directly provided low cost and many times pro bono legal services to indigent people in our community,” she said. “I have also served as a guardian attorney to the elderly who could not afford an attorney and who faced the possi-

Tony Lama, Esther Delgado vie for Council Seat 3 (Continued from Page 1) consultants and professional campaign advisers. “I decided to run, invest my own funds without an organization of any kind, because that is the type of basic public servant we envisioned when the town incorporated,” she said. “The challenge for me is to win the election.” If elected, Delgado said the first thing she would do is make sure rules and procedures are in place regarding ethics. “In particular, if you are receiving or have received a campaign contribution from an individual or entity that has a matter pending before the town, be it a permit or otherwise, said council members must disclose the conflict and recuse themselves from any decision in the matter,” she said. “This is just one example of true transparency government. The ethics rules need to be properly spelled out, followed, and enforced. Finally, developers must account for the impact that their development leaves in the town in the short run and in the long run.” Delgado said she’s reaching out to voters through the media and the traditional campaigning of knocking on doors. “As I walk through the town and discuss these issues, I find that most people feel the same way,” she said. “I find that my concerns are voiced by many, yet heard by

ESTHER DELGADO few. People in the town are dissatisfied with the way the town is working. Our Town Council has failed Miami Lakes. They do not represent the will of the people. The Town Council votes in blocks because of the small clicks that control our town. I want to be the voice of he people.” Delgado added: “We have been talking about traffic since the date of our incorporation yet it has gotten to the point of gridlock.” If elected Delgado will have an open door policy. She said Miami Lakes resident should vote for her because she can achieve transparency and accountability in government. “I provide the most basic principles to keep this town moving forward,” she said.

Lama, senior director of Innovations and Customer Strategy at Aspect Software, was first elected to political office in 2012, when he defeated incumbent Richard Pulido. The 38 year-old is married to Eileen Lama and they have four children, Mia, 18, Sophia, 16, Anthony, 9, and Lucas, 7. Lama was president of the Lake Hilda Homeowners Association, a member of the Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee, and founding chair of the town’s Neighborhood Improvement Committee. Lama has been living in Miami Lakes for the past seven years. “I made a decision years before buying our first home that Miami Lakes is where we wanted to raise our family,” he said. “Really what’s not to like about Miami Lakes? It’s in the northwest corner of Miami-Dade County, a town with tree-lined streets, beautiful lakes, beautiful homes, beautiful sunsets and neighbors that care about their homes, the environment and serving each other. I know every one of my neighbors and their families. We don’t just wave to each other. We celebrate special moments in each other’s lives.” Lama said Miami Lakes is a small town where he meets everyone, particularly at Publix. “My wife sends me there to

TONY LAMA pick up some milk and it takes me an hour to return home. I bump into parents from soccer, neighbors and friends, and before we know it, we are 20 to 30 minutes into a conversation.” Lama said he is running for a second term because he wants to restore civility to the Town Council, increase transparency, change the way the community engages with its public servants, maintain and improve service levels and maintain a low tax rate. “I’m proud to say that we’ve done that and made great progress on so many other fronts,” Lama said. “I sponsored the town’s mobile application that is used by over a thousand residents to report concerns and areas of improvement and create accountability. And despite our challenges, we have not increased taxes.” Lama said he is not done with his work to continue to make Miami Lakes the best city to live, work and play. If reelected, Lama said he wants to remain focused on alleviating the town’s traffic conditions, among other significant issues. ”For too long, elected officials have kicked the can down the road on address our traffic issues,” he said. “Part of this is seeing to it that some of the Complete Street initiatives my colleagues and I

have supported are rolled out as we have committed to the residents. I will remain focused on executing on our beautification master plan which includes keeping our lakes beautiful that is critical to increasing the value of our homes.” Lama also said he will continue to look out for senior citizens. “We do a lot for our seniors and I vow to fight for their needs, but we can, with the support of our local businesses, do more to serve their needs” he said. “I will remain committed to working with our business community and serving our youths. The quality of our schools and the education offered has a direct impact on our entire community.” On the campaign trial, Lama said he’s informing voters by knocking on their doors, using social media and traditional mailers to present his political platform. “My role as councilmember is not a part time gig,” he said. “I take my responsibilities seriously and that, at times, requires carving time out of the my day to visit residents and hear their concerns. I don’t have hours of operation. Your sidewalk, drainage, beautification, or code compliance requests are important to you and they are equally as important to me.” Lama said residents should vote for him because he’s the best man for the job based on his track record. “We have accomplished a lot of great things over the past four years,” Lama said. “That includes favorably renegotiated our contract with the police, raised the bar with respect to park cleanliness, added new equipment to our parks, expanded programs for our seniors and youths and drainage improvement and beautification around Lake Martha and West Lakes, and all while maintaining taxes low and creatively reducing unnecessary spending.”

Council initially approves $32.2 million budget By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Town Council gave its initial approval to keep the same rate for property taxes and a $32.2 million budget for next year, as town staff was instructed to restore some of the committees’ funding since volunteers play a major role in the town’s affairs. At last week’s first budget hearing, lawmakers unanimously approved the budget and decided on the 2.3518 rate, which is $2.3518 of $1,000 of assessed property value, and generates $6.3

million in revenues for 2016-2017. When the town initially released preliminary figures in June, town staff presented over $1.8 million worth of unfunded projects, including adding two police officers, black olive trees removal and replacement program, four beautification projects along the town’s main thoroughfare, hurricane preparedness, West Lakes Neighborhood Reforestation program, and senior and adult programs. But during a two-day budget workshop last month, Town Manager Alex Rey and his staff

were able to find the money to fund the West Lakes Neighborhood Reforestation program ($100,000), the tree removal and replacement program ($28,807) and the additional of two police officers ($250,000) with a COPS grant over the next three years to fund public safety services. The senior and adult programming will be funded on a pay for play at no additional cost to the town. According to Rey, the $32.2 million financial plan is a reduction of $6 million compared to the current budget. “The budget proved at the onset to be challenging due to an increase in contractual services for police, grounds, rights-of-way and facility maintenance, group health insurance costs and general elections, offset by minimal increases in revenues,” Rey said. Miami Lakes property tax value increased by $118.5 million as of July 1, an increase of only 4.4 percent over the previous year. “While the increase in roll value is modest, it shows that over the last five years, the Town has been able to hold its value,” said Rey. “It is therefore important that we continue to invest in the Town’s infrastructure and beautification to make Miami Lakes a desirable place to be.” Council members directed town staff to find money in the budget to restore some of the citizen committees’ funding. The committees’ budgets for the next fiscal year is estimated at $193,150, which is $7,000 less

donated for education as part of a development agreement be used to restore the committees’ budgets. “A binding agreement to educate the youths,” he said. Though the tax rate remains the same, residents will pay a slight tax hike since their property values increased. As a result, Pizzi said he would like to see residents with Homestead Exemption protected regarding the state’s 2.2194 roll back rate. For capital improvement projects, the town has allocated $778,588 for parks and recreation, including to the Mary Collins Community Center, Miami Lakes Optimist Park Marina and storage facility and new park furniture for the town’s pocket parks. For transportation and storm water drainage improvements, the town is planning to spend $2.2 million for Windmill Gate Road and the Palmetto Expressway, roadway and drainage improvements at Lake Sarah, street repairs at Hutchinson Road, constructing a northbound right turn lane at N.W. 154 Street and 77 Court and widening of N.W. 164 Street and 87 Avenue. The town’s biggest expense is police services capped at $7.6 million, followed by parks and recreation at $3.1 million, $2.7 million for general government operations, and $1 million for transportation. The final budget hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, September 20, at Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street.

than the last two years. The Cultural Affairs Committee and the Youth Activities Task Force requested an increase of $7,700 and $3,900, respectively, but their requests are pending until the town can find the money in the budget. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez said the events organized by the committees’ and their volunteers makes Miami Lakes the envy of other cities. “I have a friend who lives in Cooper City and talks about Movies in the Park,” he said. “He said ‘I wish we did this in Cooper City.’ Unpaid volunteers who make this town what it is, I think we should fund all of the committees.” Councilmember Ceasar Mestre said the committees serve as a springboard for council members. “With exception of the mayor, who has been elected since we became a town, all of us up here came through the committees,” he said. “That’s how we all got involved. I would like to see us find the money to restore the committees. It’s a great resource; we are getting a bunch of volunteers for free.” Mayor Michael Pizzi, who has been sitting on the Town Council since incorporation, said he voted in favor to create the committees, and they have exceeded the town’s expectations. “The committees, in the past decade, got what they needed to operate,” he said. Pizzi said if possible, he would like to see some of the $300,000

Clybourne Park opens on Main Street on September 30 Excitement is in the air at the Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street, as final preparations are being made to bring Clybourne Park to the stage. The cast and production staff are working diligently to hone the artistic and technical aspects of this show. In the words of the director, Tatyana-Marie Carlo, “It’s a

breath of fresh air working with such a diverse cast, from age to nationality. They will come together to tell a story of family values, re-gentrification, and race issues.” Since the play takes place both in 1959 and 2009, each of the talented cast members has the challenging task of portraying two dis-

tinctly different characters. Show dates are September 30 through October 23, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or online at www.mainstreetplayers.com. Prices are $25 for adults, and $20 for seniors, students, and military personnel.

Water & Sewer Department’s pump station work will affect Miami Lakeway South traffic The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department has begun work in Miami Lakes on Pump Station 331, located at 7030 Miami Lakeway South, this month to upgrade the sanitary sewer collection system. The project will allow the county to resume providing high quality wastewater services, protecting public health and the environment. The project is expected to be completed later this year. Most of the construction work will occur during the daytime hours, between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. There may be some weekend or nighttime work on Miami Lakeway South. During construction of the pump station, there will be a bypass pump working 24 hours a day. The contractor will take additional steps to minimize impacts, but residents may experience some noise from the bypass pump and intermittent inconvenience

due to partial roadway closures on Miami Lakeway South at night or on a weekend. Access to a portion of the park and adjacent sidewalks may be limited. Access to properties will be maintained at all times. Last week, preparatory site work at the station started, consisting of mobilizing materials, setting up temporary fencing, and installation of temporary piping to a manhole in the street. The structure enclosing the existing pump station will be removed permanently in order to accommodate the upgrade and a new access driveway will be included for maintenance of the pump station. When the project is finished, the area surrounding the pump station will be restored. County officials say the project will not affect the water or wastewater services in the area, and there will be no disruption of service to Miami Lakes residents.

Council denies final plat for new Loch Ness homes By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Town Council rejected a developer’s request to defer his final plat to build five homes in Loch Ness following residents’ entreaties to protect their small neighborhood from over development and traffic congestion. At last week’s regular meeting, council members unanimously rejected Comar Ventures Corpora-

tion’s building plans for the five homes, including two two-story houses, on 1.7 acres of property at 7242 Loch Ness Drive. Lawmakers initially granted the developer’s request for a deferral since the original attorney and architect couldn’t attend the meeting due to personal issues, and it would’ve given Comar Ventures Corporation a chance to meet with the Loch Ness Homeowners Association and its Architectural

Control Committee to assuage any more concerns about the project. An attorney representing the corporation said the applicant met with some residents and scaled back on the site plans to ease their concerns and comply with the neighborhood’s code. According to the attorney, the developer proposed to build five homes instead of six, including two story homes at 28 feet in height, whereas the town’s code allows 45 feet. Comar Ventures Corporation initially planned to build three story homes on the site, which is eight times the average size of a property in Loch Ness and is 1.2 acres larger than the old homes built in the 1970s and 1980s, the attorney said. To address the community’s traffic concerns, the developer planned to covert one of the lots into an internal drive on the culde-sac to alleviate the congestion on Loch Ness Drive. But council members and residents were concerned the Loch Ness Architectural Control Committee didn’t officially approve the new plans, and neighbors disputed the attorney’s claim his client met with them in a series of meetings to address their concerns. After hearing from residents following the approval for a deferral, council members rescinded their decision and rejected the development plans. The applicant can request another hearing on his plans in six months. In other Town Council news:

• Council members gave their final approval for an ordinance to amend the town’s land development code to allow for hedges to be eight feet tall along property lines where a single family or a two family property shares that property line with a single family or a two family property of two of more stories. Councilmember Manny Cid sponsored the measure. • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance that would allow a developer to pull a building permit for a project before the final plat is recorded by Miami-Dade County. The proposed legislation would expedite a developer’s building project and simultaneously add revenue to the town. Under the current code, a developer has to wait between six months to a year to record a final plat by the county’s Clerk of the Court before they can commence construction. Developers must provide Miami Lakes proof that their cadastral maps were on record in order to pull a building permit following approval first by the town and then Miami-Dade County. Councilmember Tony Lama’s proposal would eliminate the recording requirement and allow a developer to commence a project with certain conditions. They include for permanent buildings to be used as single family homes or town homes, building permits for up to 25 percent of the total number of lots in the proposed subdivision have been

approved by the county while waiting for the final plat to be recorded; a letter signed by the property owners has been submitted to the town requesting the construction of home prior to the recording of the final plat; no certificate of occupancy, certificate of completion or their functional equivalents would be issued for any home until after the final plat is recorded, except that a temporary certificate of completion may be issued for any building to be used as a model home; and the buildings or homes can’t be occupied until the final plat is recorded. The county has a similar code that covered Miami Lakes developments before incorporation in 2000 but the town phased it out when creating its own land development code. A public hearing and final vote on the ordinance is scheduled for October. • Lawmakers approved a resolution for the town manager’s recommendation to negotiate an agreement with the first ranked bidding company, Tanko Street Lighting, for a LED Street Light Conversion Program to include street light fixtures purchases and installation ($365,000). • Council members approved a resolution to authorize the town manager to apply for, and if awarded, execute an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation for the agency’s Highway Beautification Council Grant in an amount of $100,000 with the town matching the amount.

Pack 660 Cub Scouts release baby loggerhead turtles During the last week of summer, Pack 660 Cub Scouts of Miami Lakes had an environmental adventure they will never forget as they releases baby loggerfhead turtles to the ocean. The Scouts participated in a Nova Southeastern University program at the campus’s Marine Biology School in Dania Beach learning about Florida turtles, nesting habits, the reasons for their endangerment, and more.

The Scouts then went with researchers to the beach where, under a full moon and a coming high tide, they helped release over 50 turtles who were salvaged from a nest and strengthened by the University experts. It was an amazing night for the Scouts. After what they learned, the Pack decided to adopt Turtle nesting sites to help preserve the man species. Cub Scout Pack 660 meets

every Thursday at 7 p.m. at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church, 14800 N.W. 67 Avenue. Boys from the 1st to 5th grades are welcome to join and participate in the many outdoor adventures the Scouts and their families experience together. For more information, come to Join Scout Night at 7 p.m. on September 22 at Miami Lakes K-8 Center, or call Cub Master Sean Schwinghammer at 305-798-3724.

Katy Sorenson, founder of the Good Government Initiative, closes the program due to lack of interest Good Government Initiative, a non-profit which recruited people to participate in helping train new political office seekers and elected officials on ethical standards, is shutting down after a lack of interest for the program. The organization, founded by former Miami-Dade Commissioner Katy Sorenson, conducted two debates for candidates who ran for Miami Lakes mayor and two council seats in 2013 and 2014 in the Council chambers at Town Hall.

results. 305-817-4015

Sorenson, who was the moderator for the two debates, said funding was not the issue for shutting down of the program, but people were too busy or no longer interested. According to reports, the program barely covered its $350,000 budget in 2014 after posting a slight loss in 2013. Sorenson earned $92,700 running the program, which is located at the University of Miami, and that her salary depended on donations and seminar fees for its revenue. She praised the success of the Initiative with 86 elected official who participated saying 70 of them remain in office.

In Our Opinion:

Proposed revision in Town’s ‘Permitting Ordinance’ is a vital economic necessity Some social media posts during the past few weeks have obscured the importance of the “Permitting Ordinance” that will come up for second reading before the Miami Lakes Town Council on October 4. Prior to the incorporation of Miami Lakes in 2000, the MiamiDade County code, and many other municipalities in the county, permitted the beginning of construction for new developments prior to final recording of plat with the County Clerk’s Office with some restrictions, including, but not limited to, no issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy (C.O.) until the final recording is complete. This procedure allowed development companies to begin construction of infrastructure and commercial and residential structures during the period of waiting for final plat recording - sometimes as long as 6 months or longer. When the Town of Miami Lakes adopted the Miami-Dade County Building Code, certain modifications were made including prohibiting any work to be done on a new development pending recording of the final plat. The proposed “Permitting Ordinance” would eliminate that prohibition and be in line with existing Miami-Dade County code. Approval of the ordinance is important for several reasons, not the least of which is sound eco-

nomic development practices. Several opponents to the proposed ordinance have suggested, during the current political season, that it is designed for the benefit of the Lennar Corporation which is the new owner and developer of a large tract of land on the western fringes of Miami Lakes – even suggesting that council members may have accepted contributions for their campaigns to guarantee its approval. The proposed ordinance has nothing to do with granting of developmnt rights, only when a building permit can be pulled on projects already approved. The plat recording time restraints have also detrimentally affected The Graham Companies, Miami Lakes original developer and largest land owner, whereas in proposing requests for build-tosuit commercial buildings, the firm has to take in account the six month to a year waiting period in the development timetable. This has resulted in prospective tenants choosing less restraints in nearby Broward County or elsewhere. In addition, the sooner a project can have a C.O., the sooner it comes on the Miami Lakes property tax roll which is a benefit to all residents. The Miami Laker recommends approval of the “Permitting Ordinance” on second reading at the October 4 Council meeting.

‘b fore pink’ golf tournament set at Shula’s Club on Oct. 7 The 5th annual Breast Cancer Golf Tournament, “b fore pink” sponsored by Vera Cadillac/ Buick/GMC has been scheduled for Friday, October 7, at Shula’s Golf Club, 7601 Miami Lakes Drive in Miami Lakes. Pink is the color for breast cancer and all women are at risk with one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime. However, early detection and a healthy lifestyle saves lives. Proceeds from the 2016 “b fore pink” tournament will help fund the Women’s Breast and Heart Initiative’s (WBHI) efforts to reduce the incidence of undetected and untreated breast cancer. WBHI, headquartered in Miami Lakes, provides breast health awareness, education,

screening and referrals for underserved women through a targeted neighborhood door-to-door outreach intervention. WBHI’s program has identified breast cancer higher than the national average, which not only saves women’s lives, but also taxpayer dollars. The event gets underway with registration at 10:30 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m. and the scramble tournament at noon, followed by an awards ceremony, entertainment, auction, dinner and cocktails. A variety of sponsorships for the tournament are available for businesses and individuals. Pace High pitcher Manuel Rodriguez verbally commits to Bethune Cookman By Ashley Rey Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School senior Manuel Rodriguez recently announced his verbal commitment to Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach. Rodriguez is a pitcher for the Pace baseball team and has been on the varsity roster since he was a freshmen. His biggest performance for the Spartans was during the 2016 Class 5A State Championship game where he pitched a whole 8 1/3 innings for the Spartans, allowing no runs and 4 hits with 8 strikeouts. “I picked Bethune because I fell in love with the program and what they had to offer when I took my visit,” said Rodriguez. “The commitment wouldn't have been possible without Coach [Tom] Duffin, coach [Charles] Lyman, my team, Richie Palmer and Alan Kunkel. My coaches and team from Pace this past year opened my eyes and really showed me my value on the team and how gifted I am as a pitcher.” Lyman, calls Rodriguez a great player overall and showed his pride in his team’s pitcher. “He's been a hard worker and a great person for the younger team members to look up to,” said Lyman.

“He's all about his team and has always showed great passion and heart for the game. He is definite-

ly deserving of his scholarship offer to Bethune Cookman.”

Runoff in Miami-Dade mayoral race heads Nov. 8 county ballot The Miami Laker staff Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez is headed into a run-off against his chief rival, Raquel Regalado, and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and former Congressman Patrick Murphy are set for a showdown for the Senate in the November 8 general election. In addition, four judges kept their seats on the bench, including one who barely escaped with a victory, and one judge lost his seat to a neophyte who he tried to get kicked-off the ballot before the August 30 primary election. Regalado, a former MiamiDade County School Board member, is keeping Gimenez, who’s seeking a third term, on the campaign trail for two more months, as neither candidate mustered 50 plus one percent of the votes in a seven-person race. Gimenez collected 47.62 per-

cent (121,875) of the votes to Regalado’s 32 percent (81,929), as they sparred over management issues and traffic congestion, among other matters, leading up to election day. In the U.S. Senate race for Republicans, Rubio crushed the competition by mustering 89 percent (90,784 votes), over homebuilder Carlos Beruff (5.43 percent), business entrepreneur Ernie Rivera (2.23 percent), and Detention Deputy for Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Dwight Mark Anthony Young (3.44 percent). Rubio, who’s seeking a second term in political office, will faceoff against Murphy, who won the Democratic nomination by mustering nearly 60 percent (67.390) of the votes to defeat former Naval officer and attorney Pam Keith (15.16 percent), Orlando Con-

gressman Alan Grayson (11.07 percent), businessman and political activist Roque “Rocky De La Fuente (11.80 percent) and civil attorney Reginald Luster (2.27 percent). For the judicial races, former prosecutor and private attorney Marcia Del Rey unseated Jason Edward Bloch for Circuit Court judge in a race that spilled into the court when the incumbent judge was unsuccessful in removing his opponent from the ballot for profiting from nefarious activities at a chain of sex-themed motels she owns with her family. Del Rey collected 51.96 percent (110,228) of the votes to Bloch’s 48 percent (110,228). Incumbent County Court judge Fred Seraphin barely defeated Milena Abreu by collecting 50 percent (105,779) of the votes to the attorney’s 49.84 percent (105,090). A recount was ordered to make sure Seraphin won the race. County Court judge Ed Newman, a former Miami Dolphins player, kept his seat on the bench by defeating defense attorney Lizzet Martinez, as he collected 52 percent (114,524) of the votes to her 47.81 percent (104,895). Family law attorney Linda Luce (64.36 percent) defeated patent attorney Ruben Y. Alcoba (35.64 percent) to replace Judge Judy Rubenstein, who is retiring after 16 years on the County Court bench.

Miami Marlins honor Javier Perez at September 23 game vs. the Braves South Dade High School principal Javier Perez, who was struck by an alleged drunk driver while watching his son play baseball, and doctors were forced to partially amputate both legs to save his life, will make his first public appearance when he throws the ceremonial first pitch at Marlins Park. Perez, 43, will take center stage

at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, September 23, when the Miami Marlins host the Atlanta Braves. Perez was watching his son play baseball at a park when the accident occurred in April. Police said the driver was drunk and lost control of her vehicle and plowed into a fence, critically wounding the principal. His students and schools across

Miami-Dade, including Barbara Goleman High School in Miami Lakes, have been raising money for Perez’s medical expenses in a show of support for a man many say is an inspiration to them. SunTrust donates $100,000 to St. Thomas University SunTrust Foundation has donated $100,000 to St. Thomas University to fund scholarships for first-generation students with financial need, as part of SunTrust’s ongoing support for the college. The endowed scholarship will be matched through a challenge grant from the Batchelor Foundation providing an impact of $200,000 toward first-generation student support. “Gifts like these that support the next generation of leaders have the potential to change the lives of our students and the communities in which they live in,” said STU president Monsignor Franklyn Casale. Over the years, SunTrust, which has several of its executive serving on advisory boards at STU, has gifted the university with generous scholarship support for low-income students and other programs. “Our philosophy has always been that when we build our communities, we build our bank,” said Manny Perdomo, president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, South Florida. “As a purposedriven company, we are constantly seeking ways to make difference. Two of the most meaningful ways we can do this is through corporate philanthropy and helping guide, advise and lead people along their road to financial security and wellness, or as we call it, ‘Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being.”

Mater Academy’s FBLA chapter helps raise awareness at March of Dimes event The school year has barely begun and Mater Academy’s FBLA chapter has already volunteered countless hours to the March of Dimes Organization. The Mater FBLA Chapter volunteered in late August for Macy’s Shop for a Cause event which partnered with the March of Dimes. Mater Academy FBLA members volunteered at their local mall, (Westland Mall) in Hialeah Gardens, to raise awareness about March of Dimes mission and how to donate to this amazing organization.

Members spoke to Macy’s customers about their weekend saving pass which included 25% off their purchase with a five dollar donation at the Macy’s department store. All the money raised went directly to the March of Dimes’ cause to help premature babies and their mothers. In addition, members spoke about the impact of the Zika virus to the community and particularly, pregnant woman by passing out informational flyers issued by the March of Dimes.

Pace High holds annual Welcome Freshmen Week By Rose Delva Special to The Miami Laker The Freshmen Welcome Week at Monsignor Edward Pace High School is a beloved Spartan tradition dating back to 1964. It is a week-long event filled with many activities for seniors and freshmen. It aims to make new Spartans part of the Pace family and adjust to their new home for the next four years. The Spartans kicked off this year’s Welcome Week from September 6-9 with a senior/freshmen meet-and-greet where both freshmen and seniors received tshirts to ear all week. The meetand-greet was followed by the annual Salt and Light Mass where

students prayed together for the new school year. Wednesday was Dress-Up Day where seniors dressed up their freshmen in hopes of winning this year’s competition.. “My freshman year I dressed up as Dory from Finding Nemo,” said Pace seniors Beatrice Arevelo. “This year I dressed up as Mermaid Man and my freshman was SpongeBob. Both years were so much fun. I really think Welcome Week is an amazing Pace tradition where seniors and freshmen have the opportunity to get to know each other and show school spirit.” Thursday was headlined by the freshmen vs. senior lunch games,

followed by the Club Fair, where new Pace students were given the chance to sign up for numerous clubs and extracurricular activities. Welcome Week ended with the annual Freshmen/Senior Olympics, which featured games and athletic challenges where the seniors and freshmen worked together and competed against one another. “Welcome Week was extremely exciting!” said freshman Maria Celeste Pernia. “Although the games were fun, my favorite part was definitely getting to know my senior and bonding with my freshman class during all the activities. I cannot wait until my senior year to partake in this again.”

M-D Public Schools make great strides in reducing number of tests Officials from Miami-Dade County Public Schools announced that the District would further reduce the number of tests students have been required to take in previous years. This school year, mid-year interim tests in English language arts and mathematics for students in grades 3 to 8 will be eliminated. This represents a reduction of 12

test administrations and an additional 185 minutes of class time. “This is the right and necessary move for our students and teachers,” said Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “We are not going to lead our way to excellence through assessments, but through common sense testing, and the inspirational teaching of our educators who support student learning and academic achievement.” The Florida Department of Education mandates that student progress is monitored by certain tests to gauge how they are progressing in their grade level. The District is eliminating duplicative assessments. In the fall of 2014, M-DCPS led the state and nation when it first began to eliminate assessments. The Interim Assessment program was curtailed to eliminate fall and winter testing with the retention of just one mid-year assessment. This

By spring 2015, M-DCPS had eliminated nearly all the 300 District-Developed End-of-Course exams that were initially required by the state and scheduled to be administered in May to students in grades K-12. Approval of the iReady diagnostic assessment as a grade 3promotion opportunity has also led to the elimination of an additional end-of-year alternate standardized reading assessment.

St. Thomas Univ. receives Dept. of Education grant The U.S. Department of Education announced a five-year, $1,179,815 grant to St. Thomas University (STU) to start a TRIO Educational Opportunity Center (EOC). The EOC grant will help young adults from disadvantaged background, low-income individuals, first-generation college students, individuals with disabilities and veterans, pursue a higher education. “This grant will open many doors for hundreds of students who otherwise may not have achieved academic success,” said Provost and Chief Academic officer Dr. Irma Becerra. “Now they’ll be able to receive the support and guidance necessary to explore the options available to them to further their education beyond high school, and become leaders for life.” The grant will provide tutoring in ACT and SAT test preparation, financial aid workshops, campus visits to post-secondary institutions in the area, financial literacy workshops, and assistance with completing applications to postsecondary institutions. STU seniors and graduate students will be trained to provide these program services to the community. The program will also have a full-time program director and a full-time program advisor. Program services will be available to students at North Miami High School, Carol City High School, as well as residents of North Miami, Opa-locka, and Miami Gardens – areas underrepresented in postsecondary education. “We are proud of being a resource for the community,” added STU president Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale. “Whether these students become proud St. Thomas Bobcats, or pursuing their higher education at another institution, providing this important support is consistent with our university’s focus on service and community engagement. In all, the Department of Education awarded $48 million in grants to 143 college and organizations in 42 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. For more information about this program or to participate, contact Gretell Garcia 305-6286629; or email ggracia@stu.edu.

Happy 95th Birthday:

Longtime Miami Lakes resident Sue Drake By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Sue Drake answers the door with a smile, clad in a green shirt (her favorite color) with a large button pinned near the collar, featuring a cow, that reads: “Holy Cow! It’s My 95th Birthday!” Cows have long been an icon of Miami Lakes and Drake remembers a time where cows were so prevalent in the area that a neighbor had cows frequently come up into her yard, deterred only by a chicken-wire fence. The jumbo-sized birthday card that sits on her dining room table also features a cow, and was lovingly signed by people of the town including The Miami Laker staff, Publix, her doctors, a local bank, and many more. The card, arranged by Robbie Drake, Sue’s daughter-in-law, and one of her sons, Ken, was part of this year’s celebration, which they deemed her “birthday month” in August, but the moment that stole the show was the surprise appearance of a limo scheduled to pick

C

up Drake for a ride to The Rusty Pelican. Drake’s 95th celebration is second only to her 90th birthday bash, celebrated at the Grand Slam Ballroom in the Don Shula’s Hotel where friends and family flew in from other states to celebrate the petite, bespectacled woman. While holding a (green) mug, Drake sorts through the latest shipment of books with Robbie. Drake is an avid reader and iPad user, and the times she manages to beat the intermediate computer in solitaire she says “it’s an occasion!” Drake reminisces about her favorite memories throughout her storied life and mentions three that come to mind immediately – her 90th birthday surprise, the wedding between Robbie and Ken, and watching Ken graduate from law school with honors. She beamed with pride. Drake first came to Florida from Montgomery, Alabama, to visit family. Young and untethered, when Drake first saw Miami Lakes, she said it was the most
