Council passes $20M budget with some program setbacks to provide for legal expenses By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Town of Miami Lakes will be reimbursed $56,000 from its insurance carrier for the back pay Mayor Michael Pizzi was entitled to while he was suspended from political office fighting his public corruption charges last year. But instead of using the money for services in the town’s tight budget for next year, Miami Lakes will use the reimbursement fund to cover a $50,000 insurance rate increase stemming from the mayor’s two lawsuits demanding the town pay his attorneys for defending him during his federal bribery trial and reinstatement cases, according to Town Manager Alex Rey. “We were also notified that there is an increase in Public Officials Insurance of $50,000 due to the current events,” Rey said in a memo to council members. “The Public Officials and Employment

Practices policy increased from $28,463 to $78,472.” Rey said for next year’s budget, Miami Lakes will use the reimbursement to cover the increase for the insurance, however, the hike will be recurring on an annual basis and will an impact future town’s budgets. The insurance rate increase is the latest chapter of an ongoing dispute over Pizzi’s attorney fees, which has left Miami Lakes with less money to work with in trying to render the same level of municipal services residents have embraced since incorporation. Miami Lakes’ $20 million budget has already taken a hit resulting from Pizzi’s lawsuits in which his attorneys are seeking $3.2 million in legal costs. The town set aside $400,000 to settle the matter but is banking on its insurance company to pay the

Town budget approved but with program cutbacks (Continued from Page 1) bulk of the legal fees, Rey said. The town wasn’t able to add two police officers or increase the town’s committees’ budgets for special events, including the town’s 15th anniversary celebration in December. Miami Lakes also has to put on hold new beautification projects, some capital improvement projects for parks and recreation and a portion of the town’s tree removal and replacement program. At the town’s final budget hearing on Monday, council members voted to keep the same rate of 2.3518 for property taxes, which is expected to generate about $6 million in revenue. Three amendments were made to the budget including the insurance reimbursement, the $15,000 contribution from Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr, and the insurance rate increase. The town’s general fund revenues total is $16,372,201, and the total budget for all funds is $27,095,080.

Bovo was able to secure $15,000 from his county budget to fund the town’s adult classes for the next six month while the town seeks other resources. The majority of the town’s general revenue is derived from commercial and multi-family ad valorem taxes, half cent sales tax, communications services tax, state revenue sharing, franchise fees, utility services tax, and licenses and permits. The town’s police services is the largest expense, $7,344,504, which represents 45 percent of Miami Lakes’ budget for 2015-16. The remaining $8,962,697 is utilized for neighborhood services, planning, building department, community and leisure services, special events committees, public works, and other departments that help ensure that Miami Lakes continues growing beautifully. During the next fiscal year, the town’s new youth center at Picnic Park East is expected to finally open along with the new Optimist clubhouse at Miami Lakes

Department of Labor and advice from the Town Attorney, two contractor positions were converted to full-time employee status with no budget impact. On rights-of-way landscape maintenance contracts, Rey said the town has four agreements set to expire next year and will need to

Theatre Review: Pumpkin Patch features movies, The Pot dwells on immigration and identity craft show, photos, Fall Festival By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Nathan, main character and narrator of Main Street Players’ new play The Pot, best sums up his parent’s home, lifestyle and neighborhood in saying that it’s a place full of “cul-de-sacs, Cadillacs, and curvy roads that rarely intersect.” So when Nathan’s sister, Laura, brings home her undocumented boyfriend, Rick, and his sister, Diana, things begin to unravel and those rarely intersecting curvy roads suddenly become crossroads. The Pot is a fictional story that has been lived by thousands, and yet the far-reaching narrative feels intimate. The portrayal of a suburban family with cracks that widen into chasms is brilliantly undertaken by a well-casted group led by the captivating Pedro Louis as Nathan. Louis inhabits Nathan’s skin with ease and, in doing so, wonderfully immerses the audience into a stream of consciousness on race, curiosity and veiled frustration. Sofi Sassone, who plays Laura, finds a balance between privilege and revelation of the injustices of the world. Dylan Nuñez and Michelle Antelo, who play Rick and Diana, perfectly exude the ever-present fear, desperation and determination often witnessed in undocumented persons. Clint Archambault as George, together with Melissa Ann Hubicsak as Mary, wade through the waters of their own paradigms, and Clara Lyzniak as Angela and John Olivera as Uncle John, present the opposing forces without which The Pot would lose its steam. The play tackles the question “Who Am I?” through Nathan’s narration of the events that unfold and the ethereal moments that feel more like dream sequences. Every

MDFR, Town team up to focus on stroke awareness By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff An alarming number of stroke victims this year in Miami Lakes and a personal experience with the ailment have prompted a fire captain to launch an awareness campaign to reduce the risk of Atrial Fibrillation, which can lead to heart failure and even death. According to Miami-Dade Fire Captain Abel Fernandez, more than 19 town residents suffered strokes so far in 2015, and they could’ve possibly been prevented through an awareness program. As a result, the fire department and the Town of Miami Lakes are teaming up to raise awareness for Atrial Fibrillation through the month of October, culminating in World Stroke Day on Thursday, October 29. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S., where four million Americans are living with the

effects of stroke. Fernandez, a Miami Lakes resident who was recently appointed as Battalion Chief for Station One and Station 64 in his hometown, said Atrial Fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is depicted as a problem with the rate or rhythm of a person’s heartbeat. During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Atrial Fibrillation occurs if rapid and disorganized electrical signals cause the heart’s two upper chambers called the atria to fibrillate, which means to contract very fast and irregularly, Fernandez said. “In AF, blood pools in the atria. It isn’t pumped completely into the heart’s two upper chambers, called the ventricles, and as result, the heart’s upper and lower chambers don’t work together as they should,” Fernandez told The Miami Laker. People who have Atrial Fibrillation may not feel any symptoms, however, even when

Atrial Fibrillation isn’t detected, it can increase the risk of stroke, Fernandez said. The health condition can cause pain or heart failure, especially if the heart rhythm is very rapid. Fernandez initially brought his awareness program to the Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee last month and the two have joined forces to help residents combat Atrial Fibrillation. At the October 6 regular Town Council meeting, Roberto Alonso, chair of the Public Safety Committee, said the town and the fire department will be on hand to present findings, check blood pressure, provide easy ways to self diagnose, and give pamphlets to residents to help reduce their risk of the ailment. “This year, we had over 19 strokes in our town and most of them could have easily been avoided with awareness,” Alonso said. Fernandez said the crusade to detect the possibility of a stroke would not cost residents a dime. “We don’t need any fancy equipment,” he said. “All people will need are their fingers, wrist, a watch and a pamphlet to determine

if their rate is too slow, too fast or regular. You can be your own physician by checking your pulse.” Fernandez said 60 to 80 is the normal heart rate for people but if it falls below 60, it’s a sign of a heart condition and medical attention is needed. He said people who experience shortness of the breathe, dizziness and slurred speech should see their doctor right away to prevent a stroke. Fernandez also launched the awareness campaign for a personal reason; his dad suffered from Atrial Fibrillation, which lead to heart problems. He later died from congestive heart failure, Fernandez said. “The number of calls for the paramedics responding to strokes from January to August was a lot, and many could’ve been prevented because they had an irregular heart beat,” he said. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, there are two types of strokes, Ischemic and Hemorrhagic. An Ischemic stroke is similar to a heart attack, except it occurs in

Local resident and Miami-Dade College student, Marysela Liriano, wants to use her talent for couponing to help those in need. Liriano first began couponing a year ago and has since learned how to coupon in a way that she does not spend any money at the register. Her only costs go toward purchasing the newspapers that advertise the coupons. “My last coupon haul included 30 bottles of olives, 20 single rolls of paper towels, and 8 bags of dog

food,” said Liriano. She hopes to donate the food items to a charity she’s worked with before: Feeding South Florida. Liriano has participated in charitable events such as the town’s Spooktakular Halloween and the Pumpkin Patch. What originally began as a high school requirement for community service led Liriano to pursuing different avenues of charity. “It was really inspiring to help others and see my work go directly toward someone’s need,” said

the blood vessels of the brain. Clots can form in the brain’s blood vessels or even in blood vessels elsewhere in the body then travel to the brain. A stroke occurs if the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a portion of the brain is blocked. Without oxygen, brain cells start to die after a few minutes. Sudden bleeding in the brain also can cause a stroke if it damages brain cells, which occurs when too much plaque clogs the brain’s blood vessels. About 80 percent of all strokes are ischemic. Hemorrhagic is another type of stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel in the brain breaks or ruptures. It results in blood seeping into the brain tissue, causing damage to the brain cells. The most common causes of hemorrhagic stroke are high blood pressure and brain aneurysms. Alonso said a lot of people are walking around and don’t know they can be a strong candidate for a stroke. “It’s a matter of placing their finger on their hand and listening to your pulse,” he said. “It can save your life.”

Miami Lakes cousins launch T-Rex Web startup By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff T-Rex Web, a Miami Lakesbased internet marketing company, has a slogan that reads: “T-Rex is ancient. Your business is not.” The words unfurl under a bright green origami T-Rex, and in this simple, yet eye-catching design, lies the heart of Andrew Bonilla’s and Daniel Rodriguez’s start-up company. Using a long extinct dinosaur fashioned out of a paper art that originated in the 15th century would seem like a risky image to associate with a forward-thinking and innovative company for most, but Bonilla said he liked how something considered ancient could be made into a sleek and memorable design. He considers the image his way of showing that T-Rex Web could transport anything to the 21st century with ease. “There is no client to small or too big for T-Rex Web,” said Bonilla. “We can give any business a facelift for their online pres-

ence and create success for them. This is what sets us apart. We care about our client’s success because a client’s success is our own.” For T-Rex Web, work with clients usually begins with the development of a website and web presence. However, the business partners considers themselves more of a jack of all trades related to internet marketing as reflected by their varied work. They have not only designed websites, but also branded companies, set up marketing campaigns, generated traffic to both websites and social media platforms, created online content with search engine optimization in mind, and produced high-quality photography and videography captured on state-ofthe-art drones. For Bonilla and Rodriguez, this is only the beginning. T-Rex Web incorporated in 2014 and recently celebrated its first anniversary. Despite the short time since its inception, T-Rex Web has amassed a loyal client base and has found a niche in real

estate marketing and web design including drone-captured photography of aerial views across serene oceans. Rodriguez, a former aviation technician in the military, had returned home following three years abroad and found himself adrift while he studied Liberal Arts and worked at a restaurant. When Rodriguez’s cousin, Bonilla, suggested they launch an internet marketing company together, Rodriguez quit his job the next day. Bonilla had just enough funds from his time as a musician and DJ to incorporate the business and pay

for start-up costs. Since then TRex web has worked with a number of companies locally and abroad to deliver the best in internet marketing. “We work with so many different types of clients to establish the best foundation and continued maintenance for success,” said Bonilla. Rodriguez and Bonilla, both in their mid-twenties, only momentarily showed their age amidst the focused industry shop talk when asked about why they selected Miami Lakes for the home of their growing business.

“The views,” said Rodriguez simply. “This window right here, overlooking the park, is a big reason why we chose Miami Lakes.” “And the cows,” interjected Bonilla. “Mostly the cows,” they laughed in unison. “Truly, we chose Miami Lakes because it’s our home,” said Bonilla. “We were raised here, went to school here, we know this area like the back of our hands and what better place to start than here?” For more information on T-Rex Web, visit www.trexweb.net or call 786-536-6891.

‘Hook a Kid on Golf’ program planned for Shula’s Golf Club Hook a Kid on Golf promises to be a “hole-in-one” for Miami Lakes residents. The six-week program is aimed at introducing the basics of golf while teaching the etiquette of the game to children between 7-12 years of age. The program is set to start in late October at Shula’s Golf Club and requires a one-time $20 registration fee. M.L. Lions Club presents new Big T Trophy to HML The Miami Lakes Lions Club presented the new Big T Trophy to Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High following the Trojans 24-0 win over football rival Hialeah High in the annual game at Milander Stadium. Since 1972, the two schools have been competing each year for the Big T Trophy and given to the winner in the neighborhood rivalry that has seen some close games. The Miami Lakes Lion Club has been a sponsor of the Big T Trophy game for five decades. Named for the Trojans and Thoroughbreds, the Big T Trophy was first awarded in 1972 under the joint sponsorship of the Palm Springs and Miami Lakes Lion Clubs. The trophy traveled between schools, but spent most of its time at HML, so in 1981 the trophy was retired and placed on permanent display at the school. By 1982, the Palm Springs Lions Club had disbanded and the Miami Lakes Lions Club contin-

Michelle Obama honors 5 Miami Lakes area schools American, Barbara Goleman and Hialeah Miami Lakes senior high schools were among 22 Miami-Dade schools that were recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama’s program to promote youth physical activities that is also aimed at increasing academic performance. Miami Lakes and Country Club middle schools were also recognized by Obama’s third generation initiative named “Let’s Move! Active Schools.” Last week, Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho announced the schools’ accomplishment for the National Award, and that his region had more schools to receive the recognition than any other large urban district in the United States. The program, which was launched earlier this year, mobilizes physical education teachers, classroom teachers, parents, administrators, and staff to be “school champions.” According the Carvalho, the schools were encouraged to sign up at www.LetsMoveSchools. org, where they were guided through a simple, six-step process to evaluate, activate, and celebrate their successes. Miami-Dade County Public Schools was the first large urban school district to have 100 percent of its schools registered, Carvalho said. The Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award is the top physical activities and physical education distinction for K-12 schools.

ued the tradition on its own. After another 10-year run, the second Big T Trophy was retired to the HML trophy case in 1991. It was joined by the third Big T Trophy in 2001. In 2002, then-Miami Lakes Lions Club president Carl Franklin and charter member Charlie Pinkerton presented HML athletic director Michael Colby with a check for $442 to pay for a new Big T Trophy. Mike Newcomb Jr., the current president of the Miami Lakes Lion Club, said a new trophy was needed because the old one ran out of plaques displaying the score for each game. His group presented the trophy to both teams before kickoff and congratulated HML on its victory.

HIALEAH MIAMI LAKES players Malik Burns, Issiah Small and Brandon Murillo receive the new Big T Trophy after beating Hialeah High 24-0. The donation was made by Miami Lakes Lions Club members Mike Newcomb Sr., Pat Wickett, Colleen Pinkerton, Dottie Seipp, Betty Newcomb, Sharon Franklin, Blanca Hernandez, Alex Hernandez, and club president Mike Newcomb Jr.

Perla Hantman nominated for Urban Educator honor Miami-Dade Public School Board Chairwoman and Miami Lakes resident Perla Tabares Hantman last week was nominated as Urban Educator of the Year by the Council of the Great City Schools. Each finalist is being recognized for outstanding contributions in improving urban education. Hantman was chosen as a finalist for the accolade for epitomizing leadership and characteristics that demonstrate her compassion, concern and commitment to students who attend public schools in Miami-Dade County. The winners will be announced on October 8 during the Council of the Great City Schools’ 59th Annual Fall Conference in Long Beach, California.

and body care treatments with addons at a reduced rate. Zamorano’s journey into skin care and wellness has been a long brewing passion from childhood that didn’t quite take flight until one day, after working nearly 17 years in accounting and bookkeeping, she decided to pursue a more fulfilling project. What began as a side project led Zamorano to getting licensed as an esthetician and working with the Spa at Shula’s for five years before branching out and opening her own location. “It just all started to unfold,” said Zamorano. “My advice for others is that if there’s something in your heart, don’t compromise. Work hard and be consistent to see success.” Not compromising on passions and quality is a concept close to Zamorano’s heart. The products offered at her center are handpicked and tested by herself and her staff before offered for sale. Much like her dedication to deriving the best for her clients, Zamorano and the Selah Skin Care team are passionate about great customer service and building relationships with their clients.

“We care about doing the right thing by our clients,” said Zamorano. “We have clients that we ask about their children or their grandparents, it’s that sort of relationship.” Seeking not only to do well by her clients, Zamorano is also active in offering perks to local teachers and getting involved with charitable organizations. Selah Skin Studio is a drop off location for Shoes for Streets, a charity that take sneakers to the homeless in the Downtown Miami Area. She is currently collaborating with the Breanna Vergara Foundation and hopes to continue working with organizations doing good in the community. To Zamorano, the opportunity to open Selah Skin Studio was a marriage of two passions, one of finding fulfillment in her work and pursuing the call on her life to help others. “When charities come in and ask ‘can I’ I pretty much stop them right there and say yes,” said Zamorano. “Selah is a profitable business, of course, but we are very much about helping others. The heart of this company is most

CRISTINA ZAMORANO important to me.” As for future ambitions, Zamorano is staying humble. She entertains the idea of expanding to a second location one day but for now, her efforts are on creating the greatest skin care center she can make. For the time being, the studio buzzes with traffic, mostly that of word-of-mouth, further cementing Selah Skin Studio as a go-to place in the Miami Lakes community. For more information on Selah Skin Studio, call 786-391-2364 or visit www.selahskinstudio.com.

BBHarts Enrichment Center opens in P. S. North By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff BBHarts, a new addition to the Palm Springs North (PSN) community at 17601 N.W. 78 Avenue #102, next to the PSN library branch, is an enrichment concept founded by Miriam DeFranco. Students attend BBHarts to engage in purposeful activities and discover their talents while learning core values. DeFranco was an educator for 20 years in Miami-Dade County Public and Charter schools prior to founding BBHarts, and it was her experience as an educator that opened the path to creating a pur-

poseful and creative enrichment center. BBHarts first ran as a pilot program at Mater Gardens Academy for two years and encountered positive support and reviews leading to the stand-alone opening of the center last month. The after-school enrichment program is for children as young as age 4 up until age 12. BBHarts also hosts a performing arts academy for children and adults where children can participate in productions and parents can take free salsa lessons on Friday nights. BBHarts’ enrichment program runs after-school as early as 2 to 6

p.m. and the performing arts academy runs from 4:15 to 9 p.m. The performing academy also participates in Disney dance events for students to compete in. The academy aims to develop talents in the arts such as music, dance, theater and visual arts. Enrichment center and academy programs differ in curriculum, however both strive to teach core values. Within the enrichment program is the Hart-2-Hart Curriculum, Talent Discovery Curriculum, and Mini-Business Curriculum, each with its own facets of learning that focus on delivering a message of purpose.

In addition to the programs offered, BBHarts offers tutoring for all subjects and ages and allot time for homework prior to activities. Assistant Artistic director of BBHarts, Sara Valera, is enthusiastic about BBHarts and what it offers to children of all ages. “What I like most about what I do is seeing a child who said they couldn’t do something, or was too shy or convinced that they were

unfit for something, flourish before my eyes!” said Valera. “It’s the most rewarding thing to hear them say ‘because of you, I didn’t give up’.” Parents interested in the programs offered can register for class in person at the center or online at www.bbharts.com. Students from all areas and zip codes are welcome to participate. Fees vary per program curriculum.

Veterans Committee seeks donations for care packages Miami Lakes Veterans Committee urges residents to assist “Operation: Care and Comfort” to complete the committee’s mission to send care packages overseas to U.S. troops. Quintin Valiente joins Laker staff to handle marketing/advertising sales By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Miami Laker has welcomed its newest staff member, Marketing and Advertising Representative, Quintin Valiente. Born in Havana and raised in South Florida, Valiente has always had a knack for technology. His curiosity as a child, which has stayed with him as an adult, led him to take apart and rebuild computers. As time passed, Valiente still tinkered with gadgets but found a new passion on his screen rather than in his hard drive, that of design, marketing, social media and the psychology of advertising. During Valiente’s time as a student at FIU pursuing a bachelor’s in Psychology and a minor in Business, he acquired the position of Social Media Wall operator at the Miami Open, formerly known as the Sony Ericsson Open. Prior to his position at the Miami Open, he had a managerial marketing role at a tennis retail chain which he cites as the experience that cemented his working knowledge. “Joining The Miami Laker is an amazing opportunity to do some-

thing I enjoy and to advertise for my hometown. Being able to promote people and businesses that provide great services to the community is a privilege,” said Valiente. Valiente’s attention to detail coupled with his fresh take on advertising will provide a cohesive experience for current and future Miami Laker advertisers. As a self-proclaimed enthusiast for both the classic and contemporary, it is fitting for Valiente to join a newspaper whose roots extend decades into the past and whose vision is looking toward the future. “I really do enjoy the analog things in life,” said Valiente. “I love vinyls. I like being able to hold a book or a newspaper instead reading it on a tablet. I do understand the convenience and appreciate that technology is advancing but I feel both the former and modern way of doing things can work hand in hand. The best thing I can bring to the newspaper is preserving its history while bringing in the new.” In his free time Valiente devotes his attention to his

HML launches Digital Media, Entrepreneurship magnets By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff When Eric Acosta, principal of Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School (HML), told his faculty he wanted to introduce new programs to the school, entrepreneurship teacher Ted Dinicola jumped on

the opportunity. Dinicola, a sales professional who spent 22 years in the business world, has been teaching entrepreneurship classes at HML for 10 years. The expansion of entrepreneurship classes into a magnet would mean a planned trajectory

The magnet program, diverging into two tracks in Digital Media and Entrepreneurship, offers students a hierarchy of courses, each more focused on a specific facet of the business industry. The magnet also encourages certification in programs such as dreamweaver, photoshop, and illustrator, programs typically upwards of hundreds of dollars, all available to students free of charge. Dinicola currently leads four foundational entrepreneurship classes, two management classes, and one ownership class, the latter of which has partnered with a New York based company, Virtual Enterprise Inc. (VEI) that has awarded grants to the school’s magnet for furniture. “The idea is that this is not a classroom,” said Dinicola. “It is a corporation. Students are expected to create and plan their business idea, present it, and then compete with other schools in Florida.” Dinicola’s class will be awarded virtual seed money to launch their business, worth $200,000, and they will operate within a $600 million dollar economy. Each student is assigned a different department, such as Human Resources, Marketing, Administration, or Finance, and will proceed to fill the demands of the roles they have interviewed for. Each department consists of a manager and workers. “They will have an idea of how business works,” said Dinicola. “They won’t be surprised when they leave school and come face to face with the real world, they will have already been prepared for it. Kids initially have no concept that they can start a business, but they absolutely can. Currently they are in the beginning phase of creating a product.” Dinicola’s structured classroom bears a striking resemblance to an office space, whereas, just a few steps away is Salem’s Digital Media classroom, an area of students scattered across the curvy conference tables and some sitting on the floor. “I encourage the kids to find a creative space,” said Salem. The magnet’s Digital Media track is a project-based learning curriculum that includes in-depth teaching on a variety of software systems, many of which students will interact with in future occupa-

tions. The program also delves into social media coordination and usage, content creation, branding, marketing, and design. Salem, class of 2010 from HML, is a self-taught coder and happily shares her classroom with her former high school teacher and mentor, Dinicola. “Any time I spoke about an influential person in my life, it was Dinicola,” said Salem. “I wasn’t necessarily a bad student, I graduated with a high GPA but I was unfocused. I got involved with DECA while attending here under the supervision of Dinicola, and was the first person in the school’s history to attend competition at states and win. That’s where I found my love of business. I am very high energy but Dinicola helped me calm down and focus and I’m very grateful for him.” Many of the teachers from Salem’s time as a student remain a part of the school’s faculty, but the school has experienced a lot of change. DECA, for example, went from having four students in 2008 to over 200 this school year. This student investment and eagerness was a motivating factor to supply new programs. “I think society’s expectations have changed a bit, and also what the clubs and programs at HML offer have changed,” said Salem. “Before a student would show up and not do much but students now are having lunch meetings and using google drive for club notetaking! They don’t play around! The school culture has changed tremendously. I wish I could have attended HML as a student the way it is now.” Both Dinicola and Salem sing praises of school principal, Eric Acosta, for his determination to cultivate a culture of excitement, learning and school spirit. “We call him ‘Mister Let’s Make It Happen’ because if we need computers, they’re here, if we have an idea for something he is on board,” said Salem of Acosta. “He is so supportive and it’s nice to feel that you can talk to your administrator. He allows us the freedom to teach in a way to reach our students.” The addition of the school’s magnet has invigorated students and teachers alike to look forward to bigger and better things taking place at HML.

Intensity Dancers’ Studio adds after school program By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Intensity Dancers’ Studio celebrates its 13th anniversary, renovations to the Miami Lakes studio, the addition of an after school program and a brand new location in Miramar. The instructors at the studio are eagerly ushering in the new season which began on August 3. Renovations to the Miami Lakes studio included tearing down the inner walls of the lobby to make a more inviting space for the dancers and their parents. Other changes within the studio included the repurposing of a former prop room into a new “quiet space where dancers can participate in the new after school home-

work program. The studio’s new after school program was created to alleviate the burden on parents in allotting specific time for homework completion for their children and for those dancers that may have difficulty getting to the studio after school without a designated driver. The new program solves both problems in offering a bus route with stops at local schools, such as Bob Graham Education Center, and upon arrival to the studio, the dancers complete their homework with the help of tutors and eat a snack before beginning their dance class. Once parents are ready to pick up their children after dance class the students have completed their homework and their dance

practice for the day. As the final cherry on top to all the big changes at the studio is the addition of another location in Miramar at the Miramar Square Shopping Plaza, 12164 Miramar Parkway, Miramar, FL 33025. The new 3,500 square-foot location

houses three classrooms and a homework room for the after school program which is also offered at the new location. Some of the dance styles offered at both locations are ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, jazz funk, contemporary, acrobatics, belly danc-

ing and stretch leaps and turns. Open registration for the program is Monday, October 19 through Friday, October 30. For more information call 786-3137600 or email info@intensitydancersstudio.com.

THE MIAMI LAKER

Beatriz Sears joins MLEC staff as vice principal By Daniel Saiz Special to The Miami Laker Teachers wear many hats. They share knowledge and life lessons. They are disciplinarians, coaches, mentors and friends. Lifelong educators, the type that turn an obstacle into a lesson or help a student see that a perceived failure is only an opportunity to be better, are hard to come by. This is exactly the type of person that Beatriz Sears, the newest member of the Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) family as Vice Principal, has aspired to be. Sears’ love of education resulted from her mother’s dedication, who as a teacher, taught Spanish for 36 years at Miami Beach Senior High. She explained that even as a young child she would play “teacher” with her younger sisters, imitating their mother. “To me, being an educator is not work at all, it is my passion,” said Sears. “When you are a teacher’s kid, you learn to love school in a different way because you get to see the

inner workings and it becomes a way of life.” While Sears has always considered herself an educator, her years working in education have shown that she is also a proficient administrative staff member. Over her career, Sears has worked in just about every aspect of education. She has held positions as a registrar, a teacher, an activities director and as an assistant principal, giving her insight as to how everything – from schedules to pep rallies – fit together to bring a school together. For the past five years she worked as the assistant principal of Westland Hialeah Senior High. Beginning the 2015-2016 school year, she replaced Dr. Anamaria Lopez Ochoa as Vice Principal at Miami Lakes Educational Center. “MLEC is like no other school in the district,” said Sears. Sears explained that she was excited about joining MLEC for several reasons, but she especially liked its dual educational purpose.

MLEC not only offers high school education, but also offers people of all ages the opportunity to study to get their ideal job, making MLEC a unique institution. “The facility is amazing. I always knew that it was a great school but I had no idea of all of the incredible things that were going on here. Students at MLEC have a chance to learn so much that it really is inspiring,” said Sears. Sears said she was devoted to meeting and learning more about MLEC’s talented students and teachers, explaining that it would be a great way to take in the school’s culture. “I think she’s going to embrace us and we’re going to embrace her and MLEC is going to become even better than what we are now,” said John Moffi, the school’s

Social Studies Department Chair. Sears believes that through enhancements, she can help MLEC’s programs be better than ever and allow the school to reach new heights. “MLEC is the best kept secret in the North end of the county,” said Sears. “I would like to publicize what we do and make sure that the community members know what we are doing so that we can continue to grow and expand opportunities for our students.” Sears is convinced that publicizing what MLEC does will allow it to continue recruiting great students and continue its legacy. This is one of the many goals she expects to achieve while working at the school. “My goal is to help MLEC become better in every way.”

Pace High greets newest Spartans with its Freshmen Welcome Week By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Following in a decades-long tradition, freshmen and seniors from Monsignor Edward Pace High School participated in the annual Freshmen school’s Welcome Week. Festivities opened on September 14 with a quick meetand-greet between seniors and their freshmen, followed by the Salt & Light School Mass. In a moving opening lit mostly by candles, seniors and freshmen placed offerings in front of the altar repre-

senting the seven days of creation as the opening passages of the Bible were read aloud. The following day was devoted to the lively and colorful Dress-Up Day. This year, both classes dressed up for Senior/Freshmen Sidekick Day, wearing matching outfits and performing skits on stage. Later in the week, freshmen and seniors competed in the messy Lunch Time Games and freshmen got to know about and sign up for Pace’s numerous clubs and organization at the Club Fair.

As always, the week ended with the Senior/Freshmen Olympics, where representatives from both classes competed in four-legged races, dance-offs, a tug-of-war, and more inside the Pace gym. The Class of 2019 came within one point of winning, the closest any freshmen class had come in eight years. For now, the four-year countdown begins to when this newest group of Spartans will have their own freshmen to welcome to the Pace Family.

Pace High Drama presents Night of the Living Dead By Antonio Rodriguez Special to The Miami Laker With Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Drama program marking its fifteenth production under the guidance of Cristina PlaGuzman, lead teacher for the Academy for Visual and Performing Arts-Theatre Program, just what separates this production from its past ones? It’s not simply the heinous story of the dead coming back to life in pursuit of human brains that should entice you to watch the show; it’s the themes that surround it. Perhaps the most psychological show ever put on by Pace Drama, Night of the Living Dead explores

the effects of fear on the human psyche. How does such a traumatic event, that compels the individual to seek survival above anything else, weigh on a person’s shoulders? What kind of desperation is produced when fear is applied to each distinct human being? The beauty is that the answers to these questions are different from person to person. The influence fear holds on us is a daily struggle society faces, making it a relatable story. It’s the most universal emotion felt across civilizations, besides love. While the play’s events make it one of the most unfathomable stories ever

Debate event for high school students planned for Oct. 10 By Stephanie Brito Special to The Miami Laker Junior States of America, a national nonprofit debate organization for high school students, will host an event for high school students on October 10 at the Roberto Alonso Community Center, 16500 N.W. 87 Ave., in Royal Oaks Park. The event, the “Miami Lakes One Day Convention,” will include a variety of debates around the theme “Constitution and Conflict in Changing America.” Sample debates include “Resolved, that the Electoral College should be abolished” and “Resolved, that ‘stop and seizures’ are constitutional.” High school students from

across Florida are welcome to attend the event. Admission is $10 per person and the event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds with go towards the JSA Scholarship fund for the Southeast State, which includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina. Attendees will hear from Paradise Afshar, a freelance reporter for The Miami Herald. Afshar has covered different facets of Miami Lakes politics, recently covering the “mayoral battle.” For more information about the convention, contact sbrito@jsa.org or visit states.jsa.org/southeast or twitter.com/sesJSA.

told, the human struggle faced is not. Ironically, it’s what makes it one of the most human stories, Pace Drama has ever told. But the play’s distinction isn’t all just Socrates and Aristotle talk; it’s one that demands an experience to be felt. It’s a show that calls for the most immersion possible. This is a difficult challenge in our day and age, as we more so greatly depend on films, television, and video games, to completely launch us into another world. The problem with these forms of media however, is we know from the start that it cannot be our true reality. This is where theatre has the advantage. The Drama program has the opportunity to present a world the audience can touch. A world that can push back, something a flat screen could never achieve. This allows full immersion and in doing so, those watching can truly believe a worldwide zombie outbreak just happened in the middle of a school cafeteria. Night of the Living Dead isn’t a flat line show, but one that is a living and breathing ecosystem of audience interaction, suspension of disbelief, and a gut-wrenching story that nails the coffin shut on any doubts that what the audience is witnessing is anything less than human truth.

PACE HIGH SCHOOL’S Drama program will have its fall production, Night of the Living Dead, on October 28-30. Night of the Living Dead showings will hit Spartan Boulevard October 18 – 30. Pre-sale tickets are on sale now for $12 and will be sold by all members of the Drama

Club. Tickets at the door are priced at $15. For more information contact Pace Senior High at 305-6237223.

Applications for New Students now available at school office.

Healthy food truck visits at MLEC once every month

M-D COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS has long offered free breakfast during the school year and more recently free meals in select schools during the summer time. Another addition to MDCPS healthy initiatives is visitation from healthy food trucks that visit schools, such as Miami Lakes Educational Center, once a month with food options such as fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.

Goleman student Deirdre Cardona visits Pratt Institute on summer break By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Pratt Institute, a New York City based creative hub and college campus, served as the temporary home for Barbara Goleman Senior High junior, Deirdre Cardona during a 4-week pre-college program prior to the start of the 2015-2015 school year. Cardona’s journey to Pratt began in her sophomore year Chemistry class where instead of taking notes, she was distracted by an email from the Institute extending an invitation for a pre-college program. Her paperwork and written letter of recommendation were completed that same day. “I saw it as a gift that fell into my lap,” said Cardona of the spontaneous opportunity. While attending the program Cardona attended four classes: Creative Writing, Foundation Writing, Art History and Portfolio Development. She received college credit for all her classes. The pieces of writing completed during the students’ 4-week stay were published in a school anthology

and were read by the Creative Writing department. Cardona and her classmates also attended cultural events on the weekends, among them the Brooklyn Flea Market, Cardona’s favorite stop. Despite a mix up which led Cardona to the Creative Writing department instead of the Fine Arts department she applied to, following the outcome she cites the mistake as serendipitous. “All the classes were very hands-on and I felt like I was being mentally stimulated,” said Cardona. “I chose to spend my summer at Pratt because I knew that being there would make me a better version of myself. I knew that it would expand my horizons and get out of my comfort zone. It impacted me in the best way imaginable.” The road to Pratt is one that already shows Cardona’s motivation and is perhaps foreshadowing of a future of success. “You have to be independent and want things for yourself,” said Cardona. “I took it upon myself to research and subscribe to pro-

DEIRDRE CARDONA grams like these, had I not, I wouldn’t have been able to attend this summer.” Cardona’s short stay at Pratt has left her hungering for more time with the group of people she calls “some of the brightest minds” she’s ever met. She will be applying to the Pratt Institute following her time at Goleman.
