Mayor’s attorneys propose if town pays reinstatement fees, they will pursue insurance By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The attorneys for Miami Lakes Mayor Pizzi are asking the town to pay them for the costs of his reinstatement cases before they consider pursing the town’s insurance carrier for the legal expenses from his federal bribery trail. The latest development of the ongoing attorney’s fees dispute comes three days following the October 6 regular Town Council meeting, when council members took action on fighting two lawsuits brought by the Pizzi and his attorneys who are seeking $3.2 million. “If the town pays for my reinstatement fees, my attorneys would drop that case and consider suing the insurance company to get the money for the criminal trial expenses,” Pizzi told The Miami Laker during an exclusive interview.

According to a letter written to Miami Lakes by one of Pizzi’s lawyers, David Reiner dated October 9, they are willing to resolve the legal dispute in which the town would first pay them for the legal costs for his reinstatement cases. They are asking for $653,000 for the reinstatement court cases. “Once that is done, we agree to meet with you and discuss how we can assist in going after the insurance company to recoup Mayor Pizzi’s legal fees in the defense of the criminal action, which he is entitled to under Florida law,” Reiner said in the missive. Facing two lawsuits and the rejection by the insurance company which refuses to cover the mayor’s legal expenses, his attorneys are demanding Miami Lakes pay for his trial cases and the town

Tips for protecting ‘Little Monsters’ By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff To keep the Halloween scares relegated to the haunted houses and away from injury, follow these helpful tips on safety, courtesy of The Miami Laker. Spooky and Safe Streets: According to www.safekids.org, “On average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.” To ensure safety on or near roads, trick-or-treaters should be: Seen, Aware, Free of anything that may obstruct vision, and Escorted by a vigilant chaperone, easily remembered by the acronym “SAFE.”

Reflective costumes or carrying flashlights will make children visible to drivers, and in conjunction with children being aware of surroundings, being careful to keep masks away from the eyes when crossing streets, and being chaperoned will all lower risk of injury. Drivers should also be aware of their surroundings by eliminating distractions and take extra time to drive through residential areas. No Tricks, All Treats: Costume accessories should not be sharp to avoid accidents. Avoid wearing decorative contact lenses to lower risk of eye injury or infection. Pumpkin carvings should be handled by an adult and little

pumpkins should not be left unattended. While trick-or-treating, sticking to a well-known and well-lit neighborhood path is safest. Never enter a home or vehicle for treats or accept rides from strangers. Avoid homes that are not well-lit. Healthy Haunts: Be sure to only eat the treats that have been inspected and approved by a parent or guardian. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should be certain that all treats are factory wrapped and throw away any spoiled or suspicious items. Eating a full meal before trick-ortreating will keep children from eating too many treats. Enjoy a spooky and safe Halloween!

THE MIAMI LAKER

Discension continues during legal claims discussion (Continued from Page 1) was forced to hire a law firm to fight the litigation. As the legal costs pile up for Miami Lakes, the burden may fall on the town’s taxpayers, but Town Attorney Raul Gastesi said the city doesn’t have a choice in an effort to settle the legal costs wrangle. “We have two lawsuits to defend,” Gastesi told lawmakers at last week’s regular Town Council meeting. “If we don’t, we will default and Pizzi’s team of attorneys will win and we will have to pay $3.2 million.” Lawmakers, on a 6-0 vote, tapped the Lydecker Diaz Law Firm to represent the town in the lawsuits; Pizzi recused himself from the discussion and the vote citing a conflict of interest. But he returned for the dialogue of the subsequent town attorney’s report on his litigation against Miami Lakes, as the heated debate reaffirmed the tension between Pizzi and council members since he got his job back in April. Gastesi said the town’s insurance carrier denied coverage for the legal costs because the criminal case was not a “damaged

claim” and one insurer is suing the other. “They alleged he committed illegal acts and denied coverage,” Gastesi said. Pizzi said his attorneys should be paid since the town fought against his efforts to be reinstated and bankrolled $460,000 to pay former Mayor Wayne Slaton’s legal fees to keep him in office. Gastesi said the law firms were hired to defend the town charter, in which a special election was called for residents to pick a new mayor since Pizzi had more than two years left on his term when he was arrested. Pizzi, however, quoted state law which allows a suspended elected official to return to political office if acquitted of any charges in criminal court. “The Third District Court of Appeals said the opposite of what you are saying,” Pizzi told Gastesi. “They ruled that the town’s charter was read improperly and the courts mandated my return.” Following the insurance company’s refusal to cover the mayor’s legal expenses, council members urged Pizzi and his attorneys to

seek other alternatives that wouldn’t cost taxpayers. “Please, I urge you to go against the insurance company and let the residents off the hook,” said Councilmember Frank Mingo. “You say you are not suing the town and residents, and I will not vote to give you one cent of our taxpayers’ money.” Pizzi said his lawyers are seeking a resolution without any red tape and aggravation. “I hope we can get past the politics of this issue and let’s focus and resolve this solution, a speedy resolution on a reasonable amount,” he said. To attenuate the load on the taxpayers, Gastesi said he asked Pizzi’s attorneys to sue the people responsible for bringing him to face justice and the town of Medley. Pizzi was Medley’s town attorney where the federal sting was also conducted by the federal government and two FBI informants, who widened their net to nab Pizzi in a bribery and kick-back scheme that also brought down Sweetwater Mayor Manny Marono in 2013.

“I was told ‘no’ each time,” Gastesi said. “I have made every effort to convince his attorneys to go after the people who were responsible for his indictment.” Gastesi indicated Pizzi’s team of five lawyers, including Ed Shohat, Ben Kuehne and David Reiner, are each seeking an average of $680 an hour for their work on his criminal trial and reinstatement cases. He said the criminal trial constitutes the bulk of the legal costs. “Twenty one percent of the fees are for the reinstatement cases,” said Gastesi. Gastesi said the Lydecker Diaz Law Firm has three offices with 85 attorneys and ample resources to deal with the two lawsuits simultaneously. “We need a team with those resources,” Gastesi said. Council members were reluctant to spend more money on legal fees but must fight the mayor’s litigation in hopes of sparing taxpayers from economic hardship. “If we could avoid this we would,” said Councilmember Ceasar Mestre. “But we must face reality and the reality is we have a

lawsuit filed against Miami Lakes residents. And if we don’t defend it properly, we are going to be writing a check.” Miami Lakes residents told Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez not to pay for the costs of the mayor’s federal bribery trial. “I asked them how much money to settle for and they said don’t give him anything,” Rodriguez said. “They said it’s a criminal case and that’s my dilemma.” Councilmember Tony Lama said the $3.2 million in attorney fees is shaking Miami Lakes to its core. He said more beautification projects may be put on hold and the town could’ve used the legal expenses to fund the senior classes for an entire fiscal year. “This is having a real impact on the town,” he said. “The added costs is taking away from our residents who just want to enjoy their community.” Councilmember Tim Daubert summed up his feelings on the legal costs dispute. “I will not spend one penny of the taxpayers money on the lawsuits,” he said.

Com. Esteban Bovo Jr. contributes $15K in support of senior programs Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. generously donated $15,000 to the Town of Miami Lakes to ensure the continuation of senior programming at Mary Collins Community Center. The donation will allow classes to continue for approximately six months beginning this month. Funding for the programs had

been cut during the State legislative session. The town’s Elderly Affairs Committee proposed moving funds from its budget to allow for classes to continue through September. In the past, Miami-Dade County Public Schools applied for a grant from the State and the monies were distributed to various

schools to provide senior programming throughout the county. Miami Lakes classes were previously provided through monies given to Hialeah Adult Education Center. A long term funding alternative is still being pursued by all governmental agencies.

‘Touchdown Tony’ Nathan featured in Woodlawn movie opening Oct. 16 By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff While growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, a racially torn state in the 1960s, the parents of former Miami Dolphins running back Tony Nathan taught him to never express anger over the injustices blacks experienced during the Civil Rights Movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Instead, Nathan channeled his frustration into success on the gridiron as a young kid, and in the 1970s, he was one of the top highschool running backs in the nation that earned him the moniker “Touchdown Tony.” Nathan, 58, said his Woodlawn High School team’s spiritual awakening kept his teammates and head coach Tandy Geralds focused on football amid the racial tension that helped him become an AllAmerican running back at the University of Alabama, where he won a national championship and played in two Super Bowls with the Dolphins. Nathan’s poignant story will be brought to life on the big screen, as the movie “Woodlawn,” an Erwin Brothers Film, is set to premier across the country on Friday, October 16. A book written by Tandy Gerald’s son, Todd, entitled “Woodlawn” based on his father’s life as a coach, and Nathan’s book, “Touchdown Tony: Running with a Purpose,” inspired the new movie. In a interview with The Miami Laker, Nathan said he is nervous but excited about the movie premier. “I am a little nervous and also happy about the movie,” said Nathan, a longtime Miami Lakes resident. Nathan said the movie focuses

on his childhood based on his new book, subtitled “The Making of a Man and Healing of the City.” The team’s bond was created through their faith in God and became a source of strength for Nathan during a tumultuous period, while melding the squad into one of the best teams in the country. Despite the odds, they won the state championship which commenced to bring the city together, as people had something good to root for instead of creating tension that caused a schism in America’s culture. “The majority of the team became Christians,” Nathan said. “We gave our lives to Christ and it helped ease a lot of tension. We played like a football family instead of people didn’t like you because of the color of your skin.” In scenes from the movie’s trailer, a young Nathan, played by a young actor, is watching incredulous as buildings, churches and cars are engulfed in flames during the racial crisis, and his No. 22 jersey was set on fire while nailed to a wooden make-shift cross. Nathan said his parents taught him to rise above hate and love people despite their disturbing actions against blacks. “The tension was there,” Nathan said. “My parents and my family saw it on TV. My parents taught me to first respect myself and to respect other people and be kind to one another. And that same kindness will come back to you.” At Woodlawn High, Nathan’s coach took a stand against racism and encouraged his players and the city of Birmingham to unite as Christians to help alleviate the tension and support their football team. And it worked.

Woodlawn’s winning streaks and state championship were the impetus for repairing the incendiary relationship between blacks and whites, and even prompted change at the University of Alabama. Crimson Tide legendary coach Bear Bryant recruited Nathan and even paid him a visit at his home, indicating it’s time for a change that more black players played for him. In four seasons with the Crimson Tide, Nathan rushed for 1,997 yards with 29 touchdowns and a 6.4 yards per carry average. Nathan said Bryant was a “great” coach who rooted out racism on the team. “He didn’t tolerate it.” While more than 78,000 fans cheered for Nathan at Legion Field in Tuscaloosa and at the Orange Bowl in Miami, his biggest cheerleader is his wife, Johnnie. “I thank God for her,” Nathan said. “She had been patient doing all that time. God bless her soul.” After winning a national title at

Town Council actions taken at October 6 meeting During the October 6 Town Council meeting, councilmembers approved an ordinance on first reading, several resolutions for business contracts and transportation improvements and proposed legislation to honor police officers, fight drug use among youths and change the land development code to increase the height of walls for more privacy. • The Council tentatively approved an ordinance to remove the requirement that rooftop air conditioning units on town homes be screened from view at eye level

and instead require that such units be a neutral color. The town’s land development code mandates that where air conditioning equipment is installed on the roof of townhouse properties, that the equipment be screened from view at eye level (five feet, six inches) from the streets and adjoining properties. The ordinance stemmed from residents’ opposition to the land development code because it would cost them thousands of dollars to replace their air conditioning enclosures.

Second reading of the ordinance and a public hearing is scheduled for next month. • Lawmakers approved resolutions authorizing Town Manager Alex Rey to renew several software maintenance agreement including Inobbar, LLC for the town’s agenda management services in the amount not to exceed $71,280 for three years; Tyler Technologies Inc., for Financial Management Enterprise System in an amount not to exceed $140,000 for fiscal years 2015-2016 through 2019-2020; and Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc., for GIS mapping services, in the an amount not to exceed $20,000. The later measure allows the use of GIS dynamic maps that anyone can use while viewing zoning, permitting and code enforcement. • Council members approved Vice Mayor Manny Cid’s recommendation to give a vote of confidence for the town’s police department who handled two recent shooting incidents. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez proposed a similar sugges-

tion, as lawmakers approved his encouragement of residents to place blue ribbons around their trees, mailboxes and doors to show the police officers support and appreciation for protecting them on daily basis. • Lawmakers approved Councimember Frank Mingo’s request to review the town charter and address the issue of reinstating an elected official following an arrest and acquittal. Mingo said the mayor’s litigation to return to office and court costs charged to the town promoted the idea since the town charter was in conflict with state law. Members will be selected to serve on the Charter Review Committee next year to look at the charter and make changes. The residents will vote up or down on any proposed changes during the November 2016 election. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Ceasar Mestre’s proposed legislation to improve existing laws to protect children from drug paraphernalia business prac-

tices. Mestre said there are several ordinances that deal with the matter including the display of bath salts, synthetic marijuana and tobacco products and paraphernalia, and Miami Lakes should improve the laws to distance children from those displays. • Councilmembers approved Cid’s proposal for a land development code change that walls facing major streets should be measured from the side walk up and raised at 7 feet instead of the existing standard 6 feet for better privacy and security. • Lawmakers approved Rodriguez’s recommendation to fine utility workers who block the town’s street while working on electrical lines and road pavings. Rodriguez said some companies didn’t acquire a permit or even notify the town that they are working in the area. Council members also approved Rodriguez’s recommendation for a zoning change for using the town’s parks light towers as cellular antennas.

Main St. Children’s Dentistry and Orthodontics opens second Miami Lakes practice in Town Center location Main Street Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics, a network of pediatric dental and orthodontic practices located at 15600 N.W. 67 Avenue, Suite 110, has opened up a second location, a new state-of-the-art office specializing in children’s dentistry, also in Miami Lakes. The Main Street brand has been a staple in the Miami Lakes community for nearly a decade with its popular Orthodontics practice headed by Dr. Jeffrey A. Weiss. Dr. Helena Krajewski, a Pediatric dentist, joined the office a few years ago bringing pediatric dental services to the mix. “As the practice grew, we saw a need for expansion,” said

Krajewski. “So we moved our children’s dentistry across the street and built a beautiful new office.” Weiss will continue to treat orthodontic patients at the old location, offering even more availability for appointments. The new office will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting event on Thursday, October 29, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 15501 N.W. 67 Avenue, Suite 201. Guests can enjoy wine and cheese, take a tour of the office and register to win prizes. For more information about Main Street Children’s Dentistry visit their website at www.mainstreetsmiles.com.

Council incorporates transportation improvement plan in Strategic Plan By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Town Council adopted a transportation improvement plan to incorporate the proposal into the town’s new Strategic Plan, as town officials are scrambling for solutions for the traffic problems on the town’s busiest roadways. At the October 6 regular meeting, council members approved a resolution for the improvement plan that the town, county and state brain trust assembled at the Transportation Summit held in July, when they discussed mobility upgrades throughout the 6.5 square-mile town, and grants available to implement the program. Among other things, the proposal includes traffic signal priority at intersections utilizing technology or more police; improve-

ment of pedestrian connections across N.W. 67 Avenue within Town Center; pedestrian infrastructure improvements to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities ACT requirements for pedestrian facilities throughout Miami Lakes; facilitate carpooling of trips for dropoff and pick-up of school children; connect the existing and future greenways on N.W. 170 Street and N.W. 67 Avenue via N.W. 169 Street. Carol Wyllie of The Graham Companies commended the plan but said it overlooked other traffic problems on the east and west side of Miami Lakes. She said at the Palmetto Expressway along N.W. 67 Avenue, the right turn lane near the fire station is “very” short and should be extended to help alleviate the traffic gridlock in the

morning and afternoon. She also addressed the traffic along N.W. 82 Avenue south of Miami Lakes Drive, which also creates a traffic problem and safety hazard for people working or visiting companies in the business park area. Wyllie said the roadway is actually a half section line road that was originally designed for motorists to enter and exit the residential areas and business park. But when the guard gate was erected, the county eliminated access to the business park by not permitting a left turn to Oak Lane, and instead, 100 cars each day turn right on N.W. 82 Avenue then make a left turn onto the road behind CVS to take a short cut through the Park Centre shopping center. “The shopping center was not designed for that,” she said. “That center is already very busy in the morning and it’s really not a safe condition.” Wyllie said a left turn lane at the south end of N.W. 82 Avenue would solve the problem. “It would allow people in the business park to turn left where there’s not much traffic in the community,” she said. “I happen to live out there and the traffic is less at that time.” In another area in the business park, Wyllie said a traffic light is needed at the main entrance near Miami Lakes Drive and N.W. 79 Court. She said the traffic light east of the area should be synchronized to help motorists who are turning left to exit the facility without any problems.

Town hosts Com. Bovo’s Outreach event on Nov. 4 at M. L. Town Hall For the past three years, Miami Lakes and Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. have partnered to bring County services to Town Hall. This year’s event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4. The county’s Transit Department will be on hand to assist seniors in obtaining Golden Passport Easy Cards which provides free county public transportation for seniors 65 and older. The county Elections Department will be present to provide voter registration updates like political party and name changes, absentee ballot requests, and voter card replacement in preparation for the November 2016 elections. Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) will be distributing free Sunpasses for attendees. Also, Walgreens will be on hand to provide free flu shots and vaccinations.

Miami-Dade opts to let city voters decide on Special Tax District control By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami-Dade Commissioners last week gave their final approval for an ordinance that could turn over control of the special taxing districts to municipalities where residents pay additional taxes to the county to maintain their areas and protect them from crime. Commissioners Sally Heyman and Esteban Bovo Jr. sponsored the measure, which would go before voters in November 2016 to determine if they want their cities to take charge of the special taxing districts for street lighting repairs, security guard gates, road side cleaning, beach parks and canal maintenance. The Town of Miami Lakes has special taxing districts for street lighting and guard gates in several communities. The ballot proposal goes handin-hand with the request of residents in Lake Patricia and Lake Hilda for special taxing districts to maintain their neighborhood lakes. County Commissioners last month approved an ordinance to establish a special taxing district for the lake maintenance in the two communities after residents

collected enough signatures from their neighbors to allow the county to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of their lake. A majority of residents living in the two neighborhoods must approve of the new taxing district on the November 2016 ballot. If both referendums pass, Miami Lakes could take over control and management of all the special taxing districts within the town. According to the county’s figures, the combined annual costs of the district’s lake maintenance services for the initial maintenance program for Lake Hilda were estimated at $22,7243 ($202.85 per lot) for the first year and $11,634 ($103.88 per lot) for the second year. For Lake Patricia, the fees were estimated at $22,144.57 ($303.35 per lot) for the first year, and $10,423.98 ($142.79 per lot) for the second year.

Earlier this year, the county’s special taxing districts were facing a $2 million budget deficit due to a flawed accounting system that led to under billing and raised the fees to offset the shortfall. The new rate would generate an additional $4.3 million in 2016, which is 35 percent more than the $11.9 million that residents in the special taxing districts would owe without the new fees, county officials said. The rate increase for Miami Lakes was modest, about $100 more for the average property, the county said. The residents of Loch Lomond bill stayed the same at $2,241 per property, while the area known as Miami Lakes Section One saw an increase from $272.66 to $361.17, and Royal Oaks Section One guard district experienced a hike from $651.78 to $748.70. The Royal Oaks East guard gate district saw an increase from $709.48 to $823.16.

Sunday Moover ‘on demand’ service may start later this month By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Moover, a free service to local residents and visitors which runs through all of Miami Lakes, has added an additional route to its regular weekday services. Local resident Ray Almeida put together a petition when he saw that many of his neighbors would benefit from a route to places of worship on Sundays. With petition in hand, Almeida took his idea for a Sunday route to Vice Mayor Manny Cid. “The community got together to show demand for this, which is great to see,” said Cid. The new Sunday route is tentatively set to begin at the end of October as an on-demand service for those interested in using it to attend religious worship services from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This additional service will not need additional funding as the town recently entered into new operations and maintenance agreements and expects to have sufficient savings

to be able to expand the service to accommodate this need, according to Cid. The new route is an addition to the mover’s regular fixed routes that circle throughout Miami Lakes on Mondays through Fridays from 6 to 10 a.m. and 2:15 to 7 p.m. with travel periods every 35-40 minutes. The bus also provides connections to existing Metrobus stops and Metrorail via the Ludlam Limited Route. This free service also includes an ondemand bus service with a 24 hour call ahead reservation, and stops during drop-off and dismissal times at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School. “This really demonstrates the receptiveness of our officials and the idea of community when a group of individuals can come together and bring something to fruition that will benefit everyone in the town,” said Almeida. UPCOMING EVENTS

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Pot, a timely and culturally relevant play for the community and nation, centers around the idea ‘Who Am I’? On Thanksgiving, a family comes together and is forced to reconsider notions of race, immigration, hope and the melting pot. The Pot runs until October 18, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street, Miami Lakes. When Laura brings home her new boyfriend, Rick, an undocumented Mexican immigrant to her parents George, a newly elected state senator, and Mary, the pot is stirred and the heat is raised.

Additionally, Laura’s adoptive brother, Nathan, has never known his biological parents or his biracial roots and must come to terms with his identity while writing a college term paper. The Pot explores what defines, unites and separates people. The Pot was written by Glenn Hutchinson, is directed by Ivan R. Lopez, and features the talents of Pedro Sanon, Sofi Sassone, Clint Archambault, Melissa Ann Hubicsak, John Olivera, Clara Lyzniak, Dylan Nuñez and Michelle L. Antelo. Tickets are available online at www.mainstreetplayers.com or at the door. For more information on the play call The Main Street Playhouse at 305-558-3737.

Melissa Guerra is Goleman’s new soccer head coach By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman Senior High School welcomes the new head coach for girls soccer, Melissa Guerra, to the Gator family. A selfproclaimed fan of Barcelona, the soccer coach has vast experience in playing and coaching. She hopes to create the mindset of champions at Goleman’s field. Guerra, a native of Venezuela and longtime residident of Miami Lakes, grew up with a love for soccer having been surrounded by it within her culture and in watching her brother play. At 12, Guerra’s parents allowed her to play and in three short years

she began coaching at a local after school organization, teaching very young players the foundations for soccer. While coaching after school, Guerra continued playing, eventually becoming the starting forward and team captain from 2001 to 2003 for Pace High School’s soccer team. Following her high school graduation, Guerra became the head coach for the Lady Patriots U12 team for the PSN Soccer Club, the same team she had played in her youth as a starting forward. Similar to her roles in high school, Guerra continued coaching as she played as a starting forward for St. Thomas University’s All-

Conference team, making three appearances at NAIA championship games. After accepting a position as the Youth Director of Coaching for A.L.M. Sports LLC, a role she held simultaneously with coaching the Miami Lakes Soccer Club’s U10 Travel Team, Guerra then became assistant coach for the women’s soccer team at Florida Memorial University. In addition to coaching the girls soccer team at Goleman, Guerra is head coach for the boys U6 and U8 team at Cubillas, Inc. Guerra earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Tourism-Hospitality Management from St. Thomas University and worked outside of the sports world while continuing to harbor a

deep love for soccer. Eventually deciding to start her own business, Guerra opened a 24 hour traffic school in Miami Lakes but was never quite able to shake the bug for playing and coaching soccer. After building an extensive resume in coaching, and a rapport with local parents whose children she had taught, Guerra was nominated by parents of Goleman students who were looking to fill an open position for the girls soccer head coach. Straightforward and determined, when asked what her vision is for the team this season Guerra said “We are working with an end in mind, which is to win.” Apart from ferocity, it’s easy to note Guerra has enormous love and respect for the sport. The

Goleman girls soccer program is made up of one varsity team including girls from all grade levels. “This team is all about unity,” said Guerra. “That is one of the ingredients necessary to succeed, to play and think as one. Off the field they have the determination and the desire, and I want to bring that on the field. I’ll be going over fundamental learning and developing them for success.” Guerra said she hopes to ignite a fire in her team that will motivate them to pursue soccer in college. Goleman’s girls soccer team began the season on October 3 and will be playing their first game at home against Miami Jackson Senior High School on November 3.

NEW HEAD COACH for girls soccer at Goleman, Melissa Guerra (center), stands alonside her team as they prepare for the new season.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Sierra Volleyball Club, the brainchild of Carlos Sierra, has made the Miami Lakes area its new home at Dade Christian School. In Sierra’s first year leading the Sierra Volleyball Club for the 2014-2015 season, the club was able to capture two first place trophies at local Broward County

tournaments and an MVP award in Orlando at the Amateur Athletic Union AAU Nationals. Initially the teams in the club were predominantly made up of Dade Christian athletes but this season, Sierra decided to open registration to all Miami Lakes residents and expand to surrounding areas. For the 2015-2016 season, teams are between U12 and U18. Beginners and advanced players are welcome to join. The Sierra Volleyball Club is a member of AAU Volleyball and the Florida region USA Volleyball. Those interested in registering for

B Fore Pink Golf Tourney held at Shula’s Club The 4th annual B Fore Pink Golf Tournament, benefitting the Miami Lakes organization Women’s Breast and Heart Initiative, was held in late September at Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes. Hundreds of golfers converged to play in support of the organization. Since pink is the color associated with those who have been affected by breast cancer, the B Fore Pink Golf Tournament began as a way to raise awareness and early detection of the disease in underserved women in South Florida before Breast Cancer Awareness Month now taking place throughout the month of October. The B Fore Pink Golf Tournament is one of the Women’s Breast and Heart Initiative’s biggest fundraisers. This year’s golfers played an 18-hole friendly golf scramble while cheered on by

Miami Heat dancers and their mascot, Bernie. The tournament was followed by an awards ceremony featuring entertainment, cocktails, and silent and live auctions. Some of the items auctioned off included New World Symphony concert tickets, a weekend stay with golf at Turnberry Isle Miami and a dolphin encounter in Key Largo. The event ended with dinner at the Don Shula’s Steak House located in the Shula’s Golf Club. Proceeds from the B Fore Pink Golf Tournament will help fund the Women’s Breast and Heart Initiative’s efforts to reduce the incidence of undetected and untreated breast cancer through door-to-door outreach campaigns in South Florida’s underserved neighborhoods. Spanish Lake Elementary fifth grade students ticketed for names to travel to Mars During the month of September, NASA provided an amazing opportunity for citizens all over the world as it announced plans to launch a lander named “Insight” to Mars early next year in hopes of learning more in regards to the formation of the planet. Nayeli Quintana, teacher at Spanish Lake Elementary, had her fifth grade students embark on a mission themselves in becoming space explorers with NASA on the Insight lander. Students in Quintana’s class were able to submit their names to NASA and in turn they received a boarding pass that signified their name being encrypted into a microchip built into the “Insight” lander that will travel to Mars on March 4, 2016. This mission would not have

been possible without a language arts assignment that had students write an essay stating how they would implement the core values in a new and unexplored planet. One of the main tasks they had was to describe ways in which they would teach the resident aliens about our core values and how they help solidify a lasting and successful race. Another task they had was to state ways in which they would lead by example. The students decided they would lead by showing initiatives such as citizenship, cooperation, fairness, honesty, integrity, kindness, pursuit of excellence, respect and responsibility. Not only did these students make history, they also earned 297,805,305 frequent flier miles!

BGEC PTSA, Town Council add trees to campus For months, Miami Lakes residents have been complaining about the lack of trees located on the north swale of the campus at Bob Graham Education Center. With the help of the school’s PTSA and town council members, a science and beautification project was assembled to help restore the environment around the facility. Vice Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmember Ceaser Mestre reached out to Principal Yecenia Martinez-Lopez about the town’s interest in finding a solution to the lack of trees. With the help of a science segment sponsored by the PTSA, the school’s second graders have been eagerly learning about ways to help restore the environment, about trees and their role within environment. With the project on the forefront, the school embraced the challenge and pioneered an innovative and exciting way to incorporate the trees into the lesson plan. Martinez-Lopez said BGEC is

cohesive and integrated with this community fabric, in line with smart growth principles and working steadfast in providing world class and high-quality education. She said civic engagement is pivotal as it offers strategies for how local governments and schools can bring their respective planning efforts together to take a more community oriented approach to schools and reach multiple community goals – educational, environmental, economic, social, as well as fiscal. “The education of our students is a shared responsibility, benefiting all students, our society and the economy as whole,” said Martinez-Lopez. “This framework is about schools engaging with parents and communities to work together to maximize a powerful student-learning outcome. Most meaningful partnerships are those where schools, parents, students and the community to work together to focus on student learning.”

Two HML students honored for Fairchild Challenge work Two students at Hialeah Miami Lakes High School were recognized for their projects during the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s Fairchild Challenge, giving the school the Silver Award for the high school level. Mario Castro received second place for her Adopt-a Tree flyer design, and Myles Lopez received a special merit for Solid Points of Discussion in the Environmental Debates on Biodiversity. HML has been recognized this year as the recipient of the Silver Award and fourth place in the high school category. This year’s Fairchild Challenge was designed to help students

explore the deep connections among plants, human civilization, and the environment. The project invites them to imagine themselves as a Polynesian sailor of the past, or as an interplanetary space traveler of the future. Thousands of years ago, a group of sailors ventured eastward in fragile sailing canoes from Asia to colonize what is now Polynesia, an area covering over 16 million square miles of Pacific Ocean. The sailors carried bananas, coconuts, bamboo, and various other plants. With these “canoe plants”, they transformed desert islands into bountiful gardens of food, medicine and beauty.

Hialeah Miami Lakes alumni return as new faculty By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The teachers at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High bleed orange and blue, especially those who were Trojans in their high school years and have returned as faculty to lead the next generation. Among those that have returned to familiar halls are Illiana Llosa, Michelle Simon, Alejandro Plaza, Michael Garcia, Michelle Ruiz, Marielena Viciedo, Eileen Padro, Miriam Ochoa, David Ruiz, Farrah Salem, Ismary Gondar, and Alexis Cazañas. Following college experiences and earning degrees in fields such as Health Education, Special Education, Sociology, Liberal Studies, Psychology and Biology these alumni returned to the school that nurtured them and returned the favor. Although calling former teachers by their first name seemed strange at first, the experience of returning to an alma mater proved to be the right choice for each of these teachers. “Watching the light bulb go off when students finally understand or master a concept that they previously thought they couldn’t is what I find most fulfilling,” said Gondar. HML has encountered its fair share of difficulties during its history including a high influx of non-native students expected to perform under standards set for native speakers. During a period of

time in the early 2000’s, the school’s grade was poor and after intensely focusing on bringing it up, the process inevitably reduced programs and activities. That version of HML is a fading memory, however, as the school’s grade improved and attendance doubled. The school is currently a “B” school with programs such as iPrep Academy, the Legal Studies magnet, the Digital Media Technology and Entrepreneurship magnet and the revival of the school’s drama program and newspaper. The former students turned teachers have noticed the change. “There are so many programs now! I am amazed that they have a Digital Media & Technology Program AND a Law Studies program. They are really trying to prepare students for the workforce. Additionally, the level of involvement in after-school activities has changed most since I attended,” said Salem, Digital Media Technology teacher. “I really wish I had the chance to be in the iPrep Academy in my day,” said Llosa, Activities director. “In a short 15 months, principal Eric Acosta revamped the look of the school, brought back school spirit with an updated uniform, and started the closest process to getting back the planetarium.” School spirit is running through the halls with school clubs, new paintings on the walls, and a fervor

HIALEAH MIAMI LAKES HIGH SCHOOL teachers have returned to their alma mater to lead the next generation of Trojans. that extends even to fashion choices as some students were spotted during lunch with the school’s colors on their shoes. The excitement for unity is one shared for both current underclassmen and for the teachers who guide them. “There are so many of us that will forever bleed orange and blue!” said Ochoa whose return to HML was a family affair. Ochoa’s

father, a former teacher, and her mother, an AP secretary, both retired from HML and both her sisters also graduated from the school. “When I was 5, I dressed up like an HML cheerleader for Halloween because my dad used to take me to the football games where I got to hang out with the cheerleaders and I thought they were super cool.”

HML students resurrect Gilded Trojan newspaper By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The administration and faculty at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School have worked to improve school morale and implement programs within the last two years, and improve they have, as now students are rising up to the occasion and not only eagerly participating but also filling the gaps. The high school’s newspaper was eliminated for the 2014-2015 school year much to the disappointment of a handful of students that had participated in the struggling newspaper in previous years. Among those students were Gabriella Torres, Jairo Rocha, Daniela Martinez, Alexandra Ochoa and Marvin Espinosa. Together they created a plan for what they hoped to accomplish and the merits of having a school newspaper, then called a meeting with the principal, Eric Acosta. Acosta, known for his school spirit, found the group a sponsor within a day. The students were paired with yearbook teacher, Alejandro Diaz-Rubio, and the newly named Gilded Trojan was

born. “We went through a bunch of different names,” said Torres, editor-in-chief of the revived newspaper. “It felt like we were bringing it up from the ashes in a way so we wanted a name to reflect a sort of royal rebirth.” Torres leads her small but devoted team with Rocha, Opinion editor; Martinez, copy editor; Ochoa, Media editor; and Espinosa, Sports editor. Despite being their senior year, the group isn’t too concerned with leaving behind the project they worked hard to revive. They consider this the beginning. “We are already looking to groom some underclassmen who show promise,” said Torres. “We see this more as leaving behind a legacy,” said Martinez. “Yes, it’s sad that we won’t really see what it will become since we will be leaving to college next year but this is something we need as a creative unifier for the school.” The group, highly astute in their observations, have noted a divide where the students in programs such as the iPrep Academy are

given the spotlight and those students that may not be in a program but are talented in creative outlets but have had no outlet until recently, such as the arts, are overlooked. They hope to include the accomplishments of all students in the Gilded Trojan, as well as give opportunity for submissions. In the short time since they have found a sponsor and began working on pages, news has spread by word of mouth and HML students are eager to see the final product. The first newspaper of the year will be live before the end of October on a website whose url is to be announced. The group cites this as a true labor of love, considering that each of them are involved in the school’s rigorous iPrep Academy, of which they are the first graduating class, and are under strict deadlines for their senior year. In addition to pursuing the newspaper as a creative unifier for the school, the new staff thought it about time that the changes and improvements over the last few years at the school be celebrated. “HML has a bad reputation for

The students will be publishing the first school newspaper in over a year. having struggled years ago,” said Torres. “But this school has become well-rounded and the students, programs and staff don’t get appreciated enough. This newspaper will show all the great things happening at HML. We have amazing students and people don’t

know it.” Sponsors and advertisers interested in working with the newspaper can email hmlgildedtrojan@ gmail.com. The newspaper is on social media platforms Twitter and Instagram as @GildedTrojan

organized by Lilian Dubon, Pace’s college advisor, who chaperoned the trip along with Melanie Otero, a Pace guidance counselor. Hopping on a charter bus, the group rode up to University of South Florida and Florida Gulf Coast University on their first day, traveled to the University of Florida and Florida State University on their second, and closed out their tour at University of North Florida and University of Central Florida. Along their journey, they ran

into many recent Pace alumni who gave them authentic and honest advice, such as Andrew Oguga, class of 2014, at USF; Janelle Gonzalez, class of 2014, at UCF; and Christian Roig and Gabriel Sanchez, class of 2015, at UF. “Many students had their hearts set on different schools before the tour,” said Otero. “But now they’re looking at things differently.” “I wanted to see the options I had at the public universities in Florida,” said Matthew Sarria, a

Pace junior. Before the tour, his college of choice was the University of Miami, but he went on the tour after it was recommended to him by students who went last year. “They said that it was a good experience to see the college campuses, the students in the campus during school hours, and get a feel for the college.” Sure enough, he wound up being impressed with the tight-knit student community at UF and says that it is his new top choice.
