MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA

For a second time, Circuit Court dismisses law suit filed by former Mayor Pizzi

A Miami-Dade Circuit Court dismissed a lawsuit filed by former Miami Lakes mayor Michael Pizzi against the town, who’s seeking attorney’s fees from his criminal trial on federal public corruption charges in 2014. The court made its ruling on October 13. It’s the second time the lawsuit was thrown out but, once again, Pizzi has 20 days to amend his litigation albeit the court further ruled that the former mayor would not be entitled to seek more court fees in his lawsuit against Miami Lakes. Pizzi reportedly is seeking about $3 million in court fees from his criminal case, in which a jury acquitted him of all seven charges. According to the court’s decision, which was released by Miami Lakes last week, its ruling was based on Pizzi’s federal indictment which doesn’t support an inference that he acted for a public purpose after Pizzi allegedly accepted bribes from two FBI undercover agents posing as sleazy businessmen who were seeking town contracts in exchange for money. The fake company, which was called Sunshine Universal, was used by federal agents to see which government officials and lobbyists would take the bait to crack down on corruption. The scheme included preparing a poor quality report and would use the bulk of the grant money to enrich anyone who participated in the bribery scheme. According to the indictment, federal prosecutors alleged that Pizzi influenced the defendant’s legislative process such as the rest of the Miami Lakes Town Council that would pass legislation authoring the shadow corporation’s efforts to obtain federal grant money; receive finan-

cial rewards for assisting the shadow corporation’s efforts to obtain federal grant money; concealed information from the defendant regarding contributions to his reelection mayoral campaign; and falsified a campaign treasurer’s report regarding contributions he received. “Considering that the context out of which the alleged misconduct arose must also serve a public purpose, the Trial Court ruled the context alleged in the indictment does not support an inference that the former mayor acted for a public purpose,” the court said in its ruling. Pizzi, who returned to office in 2015 following his acquittal but lost his reelection bid the following year, can file a third amended lawsuit for attorney’s fees from his criminal trial but not seek additional court costs in his case against the town. “The ruling says he can no longer bring up that claim if he decided to amend the lawsuit,” said Town Attorney Raul Gastesi. Gastesi said the town would proceed to seek sanctions for “egregious conduct” in the case if Pizzi filed a third amended lawsuit as a way to possibly stop the litigation once and for all. He said the former mayor has appeared at several depositions but refused to answer questions and ignored several court orders to turn over tape recordings and other evidence that are crucial to Miami Lakes’ defense. The court’s dismissal of the lawsuit is another victory for Miami Lakes, which has been fighting the former mayor’s litigation for more than two years. Pizzi was seeking about $3 million in attorney’s fees and the town spent a lot of money fighting his lawsuit, and its own litigation against the insurance carrier for refusing to cover his legal bill.

Miami Lakes businessman Aaron Lee represents South Florida at UN Goals forum

Entrepreneurs’ Organization – South Florida (EO-SOFLO), represented by Miami Lakes business owner Aaron Lee, has joined the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) initiative designed to wipe out global poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change by 2030. As president of EO-SOFLO, Lee was appointed to the EO committee that recently met at the United Nations during the 72nd session of the U.N General Assembly. At the event, which drew dignitaries and leaders from around the world, the local entrepreneur signed the official EO charter that pledges to support 17 U.N. SDA goals. The charter states that these businesses are committed to making a positive impact in cities, communities and countries in support of the United Nations Sustainable Develop-

ment Goals. Lee said many EO-SOFLO members already are focused on sustainable start-up and business development, as well as helping the community through mentoring, volunteering, serving on charity boards and more throughout the region. “Our South Florida members recognize the importance of being global citizens, looking beyond our businesses to make a positive impact in our communities and the world through social entrepreneurship,” said Lee, who founded digital marketing company iluma Agency in Miami Lakes 16 years ago. “It was such an honor taking this a step further, representing our chapter and the overall South Florida business community at the U.N. to join this critically important partnership,” said Lee.

Mayor Cid upbeat on future at ‘State of the Town’ PAGE 4

NOVEMBER 3, 2017 THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff After Hurricane Irma left South Florida in its path of destruction, Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid was the face of the town’s clean-up and recovery efforts, conceivably among the fastest cities in Miami-Dade to remove uprooted large trees and debris from residential areas, roadways and commercial properties. In addition, the town got assurance that FEMA will reimburse Miami Lakes most of the money it spent to rid the massive scattered fragments. “I’ve known Manny Cid before he was mayor, and I have known him to be caring, committed, a good man and a good father,” said Tim Reynolds, an AP sportswriter, who was the master of ceremonies for the 2017 State of the Town Address. “But he showed us all about leadership during Hurricane Irma.” The unpretentious Cid refused to take the credit, alluding to the efforts of town staff, elected officials and many volunteers who made the rapid clean-up and recovery process possible. “Hurricane Irma hit us hard but we hit it back,” Cid said before a packed crowd at Miami Lakes Town Hall. “We had no fatalities and no major injuries

in Miami Lakes.” Cid’s leadership is a promising sign of the direction Miami Lakes is headed, as he outlined a list of goals and objectives for the town for the year, including securing road impact fees for additional revenues, taking over the special taxing districts, a new senior village, the Main Street East project, and a portable transportation system to alleviate traffic congestion. “The state of the town is strong and it can and will get stronger,” Cid said. “How do we move forward as a community?” Road impact fees from developers and taking over of the special taxing districts from the county were game changers for Miami Lakes, Cid said. He said road impact fees, which generated millions of dollars a year from developments in Miami Lakes, were discovered in other city’s coffers. “But we took on the county and won,” he said. “It will bring in millions of dollars to the community, and now that money will be spent in Miami Lakes.” Since Miami Lakes took over the special taxing districts for security guard gates and the lakes, Cid said the town plans on maintaining them to resi-

dents’ standards with less costs to taxpayers. “Better services while lowering the costs for the special taxing districts,” Cid said. “The road impact fees and special taxing districts are game changers for Miami Lakes.” Nurturing senior centers is the fulcrum of the Miami Lakes community, as Cid boasted about the town becoming the first to build a new senior village for residents only, which includes an ALF, a skilled nursing center and recreation center. The Graham Companies’ project is a partnership with Miami Jewish Health System. “Cities are judged on how we take care of our most vulnerable people, senior citizens,” he said. “The senior village is a major feat for our community.” Cid acknowledged that finishing the master plan for Miami Lakes Optimist Park in about two years poses a challenge for financial reasons. He said some residents might support borrowing the money, while others would like to stick with the pay-as-you-go plan, which takes longer to complete. The town budgeted about $1.4 million for the park but needs an additional $1 million to speed up the time frame. The pay-as-you-go plan and slow improvements have frus-

trated residents, who instead are using the parks and recreation facilities in Weston, Doral and Pembroke Pines. At the park, which was built in the early 1970s, the baseball fields, batting cages, and other amenities are decrepit, and residents want the gymnasium the town promised more than a decade ago. The park improvements would also include an airnasium, new tennis and basketball courts, a concession and bathroom facility, field and fencing reconfiguration, a walking trail path, and additional parking spaces. Cid said although he supports the debt, the rest of council members and residents might not concur. “I think we can get it done next year and I’m in favor of that,” he said. “Some of my friends disagree with me, but regardless the project will get done and that’s the promise we made to Miami Lakers.” Cid said Main Street East is the town’s next biggest project. After the project is completed, he said it will be more accessible to pedestrians and residents can spend time and their money there to boost the town’s economy. “We will be showcasing the area in the next couple of months,” he said. For the ongoing traffic gridlock throughout Miami Lakes, Cid said a plan is in place where

the town pays an extra penny to the county that generates thousands of dollars for the town to purchase 88 golf carts to transport residents around town. “The golf carts will be picking us up in front of our homes, alleviating traffic by taking cars off the roads,” he said. Cid’s speech also mentioned erecting a bridge on N.W. 59 Avenue to give motorists a better access to the area, which includes Costco, Miami Lakes Auto Mall, restaurants and shops. Cid also praised the new dog park called K-9 Cove which was officially opened last week. “Dogs don’t vote but we took care of our furry friends,” Cid said. (Please see Page 13)

A migration of Italians to Argentina in the early 20th century impacted the cooking resulting in similar dishes between both nations. It’s no surprise then that Gaucho’s forte is meats, cheeses, wine and pastas. Despite the menu, none of the managing partners are Argentinian or Italian. Escobar is Puerto Rican, Rick Cora is of Cuban descent, Shaukat Ali is from India, and Biagio Carpentieri is Venezuelan. However, Gaucho’s general manager Miguel Del Franco is

Argentinian and the personable butcher, Pedro, is from Rosario, Argentina and always eager to speak with patrons who are made to feel like family. “We started Gaucho’s together because we really enjoyed the concept for a market and restaurant and we all love wine, meat, and empanadas, said Escobar. The foursome was in the process of trying to utilize a parcel of land purchased with the intention of expanding an aircraft business but after some thought, the managing partners decided to pursue their love for Argentinian and Italian cuisine and opened the first Gaucho’s location in Kendall four years ago. The location experienced enough popularity that the decision to open a second location came soon after. “We decided on Miami Lakes because this was a market and restaurant concept for Argentinian food that really wasn’t here, said Escobar. “We thought that we could be that business for Miami Lakes. Locals have eagerly welcomed the market although some are unfamiliar with how the concept works. As a limited table service restaurant, Gaucho’s offers seating and delivers meals to tables, however patrons self-seat and put in their order at the register where they are given a number to display at their table. The “Gaucho process is explained in the first page of their menu, available to guests

The menu offers classic breakfast options served daily until 11 a.m. and weekends until 11:30 a.m.The lunch and dinner menu is full of meat and fish dishes, most popular is the skirt steak that is extremely flavorful and tender. A variety of pasta dishes, burgers, salads, and soups are offered along with the traditional Argentinian “migas which are thin sandwiches with the crusts cut off, topped with cheese and another item, such as tomato, ham, or an egg, and mayonnaise. There are also several different types of empanadas, sandwiches, and tapas. Valeria Bula, a Cambridge Journalism junior, has only been working for the Herald since this summer, but the internship is something she’d set her sights on as soon as she began the Journalism program at MLEC. “I’ve always been interested in working with The Miami Herald and being a possible intern because I know previous students have done it,” said Bula. “I wasn’t ever completely sure as to how to get it. Luckily it basically got placed on my path and I’m very grateful for that.” But Bula soon thought that her luck was running out as it had become a very difficult process to have the internship officiated by Miami-Dade County. There were so many hurdles and hoops that she became overwhelmed, so she is very thankful for her Journalism advisor, Neyda Borges, who helped her through the process.

“I probably wouldn't be able to have this internship if it weren’t for her . . . she did everything for me and she made sure everything was under control so I really owe it to her.” Borges, however, gives all praise to Valeria, noting that she excels as a student and a journalist, even at such a young age. “She asks a lot of questions and searches for answers. That's part of what makes her such an excellent student and an even better journalist,” said Borges. “Even though she is so young she is interning at the Miami Herald, working alongside college-aged interns and professional journalists. But that does not intimidate her; on the contrary, it only increases her enthusiasm for her work.” Despite her journalistic talent and the fact that the internship has been officiated, Bula still faces difficulties. In addition to pursuing journalism in and out of school, she also holds office in Junior State of America and National Honor Society, acts as a committee member for the Miami-Dade Youth Commission, and volunteers at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, so she finds that effective time man-

agement is essential. “It’s definitely a really difficult juggling act,” said Bula. “The internship is just one amongst several things I have on my plate this year, but honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Out of all of her extracurriculars, she dedicates most of her time to her passion for journalism. “I invest a lot of my time into journalism, as much as I can while also trying to keep up my grades in classes,” Bula said. “The Herald is definitely the most demanding, but it’s so fun.” So far, Bula has thoroughly enjoyed working on the human interest stories she has been assigned. Getting her first article published was “the best feeling ever” and she finds the experience of writing for the Herald to be a very rewarding one. “The biggest reward is the feeling that in almost every article I’m at least impacting someone’s life. Being able to cast a spotlight, even if momentarily, on something that's kind of insular and making someone eventually happy through the work I’m making is probably the best part of this job.” Aside from the rewards she has already reaped from the internship, Bula wants to expand her horizons and has high hopes for other things she might gain through the experience. “From this experience, I real-

ly hope to become more recognized and build a stronger network,” Bula said. “I also want to gain the newsroom experience. It’s really exciting getting assigned a new story and always being on the hunt for a new story, so I really hope to gain from this experience something that I may not find anywhere else.” Even before she began the internship, it was clear to Bula’s teachers that she is a remarkable and extremely driven student,

so they are all the more proud of her for chasing this opportunity. “I’m very proud to see Valeria pursuing her dreams in mass communications,” said Erica Evans-Desimone, the head of the Cambridge academy and Valeria’s former social studies instructor. “I think working for The Miami Herald will give her tremendous amounts of experience and it's done nothing but help our previous students who’ve been in the same capacity.”

Shula’s Spa offers massages to local first responders PAGE 10

NOVEMBER 3, 2017 THE MIAMI LAKER

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Heloisa Melo’s name rolls off the tongue and aptly captures her essence – that of ethereal relaxation. It’s no wonder she ended up in the massage and beauty industry. Melo’s breathy voice and serene demeanor are quick to put anyone at ease and she uses these talents to nurture others, most recently as the lead massage therapist at the Spa at Shula’s to suggest complimentary massages to local first responders. Local law enforcement and firefighters were invited to visit the Spa at Shula’s where Melo and other massage therapists treated them to a massage and gift bags, an idea Melo had after witnessing the efforts of first responders in the wake of

Hurricane Irma. “It’s such a shame that the perception of police officers has really suffered due to a small percentage of bad officers,” said Melo. “The majority of these men and women are ethical people who risk their lives for others and especially when we see natural disasters. Seeing how much the first responders in our community did after the hurricane was what motivated me to plan this for them.” The Spa at Shula’s, under the direction of Linda Higgs, prides itself on using fair trade products and partnering with companies who go above and beyond to give back to communities, such as the environmentally friendly line Eminence, which is organic, handmade in Hungary, and plants a tree for

every product purchased. The Spa alone is responsible for the planting of over 575 trees. With a history of generosity, the Spa at Shula’s was naturally on board for an idea to affect the local community for a common good. Though this is the first event of its kind at the spa, this is not Melo’s first time participating in the local community to give back. Melo has long been involved with various charities and organizations, particularly those that serve victims of domestic abuse. She, along with some friends, have given makeovers and massages to women who are struggling through difficult circumstances. “When these women are fleeing from bad situations they

The Miami Lakes Optimist Club recently elected its new board members and officers during a ceremony at Italy Today on Main Street. Brian Hadley was elected president and Luis Arrojas was chosen as vice president. Sandy Menesses was elected recording secretary, Karrisa Lao is the new corresponding secretary and Jim Hamilton was selected the club’s treasurer. Board members include Alex Castroman, Alex Rodriguez,

Rigo Cabrera, Stephanie Rugama, Javier Zapata and Danny DeVarona. As the new president, Hadley said his plans for the Optimist Club includes working with the town to get Miami Lakes Optimist Park renovated and work with the town and residents to offer more programs and scholarships for kids. Hadley, 36, also said he plans on increasing membership for the organization, which has about 44 members.

Immediately after he was elected president, Hadley said he created a membership committee to help increase membership by sponsoring membership drives. Hadley, a Miami Lakes resident who coaches the 10U Yankees, said the group is seeking to add at least 15 members by the end of this year. “The plan is what it can do for them and what they can do for the Optimist Club,” Hadley said.

don’t think to grab their lipstick or things like that,” said Melo. “Nurturers are the ones who need the most nurturing. First responders, nurses, parents, their instinct is to take care of others but who takes care of them? Doing something as simple as beauty services for a woman can do so much to help her feel looked after and improve her self-esteem, or offering massages to stressed out police officers who put their lives on the line every day.” The Spa at Shula’s hopes to continue complimentary days for first responders. The play takes place in a suite at the classic hotel Chateau Marmont on the night of the Golden Globe Awards. What transpires is a bleak, tragic and unapologetically hilarious look at what the movers and shakers of Tinsel Town are willing and able to do in order to keep and preserve their secrets and the

status quo of the Hollywood mystique and lifestyle. Actors will be compensated for their performance. Those wishing to audition must bring a recent headshot and updated resume, a comic monologue one to two minutes long, be prepared to read from the script, professional attire, knowledge of the play, and ages within the ranges of the characters they are auditioning for. Additionally actors must note any foreseeable conflicts during the rehearsal process. Cong. Mario Diaz-Balart honored at State of the Town (Continued from Page 4) Time was taken to honor U.S. Congressman Mario DiazBalart for working tirelessly to help Miami Lakes secure its own zip code and playing a major role after Hurricane Irma. Cid presented Diaz-Balart with the Key to the Town and praised him for stepping in after the U.S. Post Master General laughed at the town for requesting an independent zip code to reduce the costs of car insurance. “Congressman Diaz-Balart got involved and said he’ll take care of it,” Cid said. “After an investigation, legislation was filed and passed in the House but because it was a presidential election year, it stalled in the Senate. But with the leadership of Diaz-Balart and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, it’s on its way to the Senate and we are in good hands and on our way to an independent zip code.” Cid said Diaz-Balart arrived in Miami Lakes immediately after Hurricane Irma and offered his assistance.

He made sure FEMA reimburses Miami Lakes 90 percent of the $2 million it spent for the damage the Category 3 storm caused in the town. “I have the honor of awarding you the highest honor with the Key to the Town,” Cid said. Diaz-Balart said he’s privileged to work for Miami Lakes in Washington but the real credit goes to Cid, council members and volunteers who make his job easier. “The work and job you do is well done for the rest of the state and in the nation,” Diaz-Balart said. “The residents are blessed to have you working for the betterment of the town.” Miami Lakes resident Nancy Rogers, a member of the town’s Elderly Affairs Committee, was also honored, as she was named Volunteer of the Year, while Gloria Rodriguez was named Miami Lakes’ town Employee of the Year. “A lot of people deserve this more than me but I really appreciate it,” said Rodriguez.

Miami Lakes resident Erika Castroman doubles up on holiday gifts for homeless

Last year, Miami Lakes resident Erika Castroman came up with the perfect idea to help homeless people during the Christmas holiday season. She passed out 50 backpacks filled with washcloths, combs, hair brushes, toothpaste, tooth brushes, hand sanitizers, deodorant and small non perishable food in the Downtown Miami area. Her crusade was so successful, she decided to make it an annual event, as she’s preparing to hand out 100 backpacks on Christmas day filled with items of hygiene and food such as granola and fruit bars, goldfish and individual cereal cups and fruit juices. Last Christmas, Castroman, a star softball player at St. Thomas University and product of the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, was on her way to her rel-

ative’s house to celebrate the holidays when she spotted homeless people wandering around the streets or sleeping under the facades of buildings. The backpacks she had for presents for her family members, she decided to give them to the destitute people to help lift their spirits. She was able to accomplish her goal with the help of local businesses and residents, who donated the money to fill the backpacks with those items and food. Passing out 100 or more backpacks to the homeless would be a great Christmas present for Castroman. The Miami Lakes Sports Shop, 6763 Main Street, which is among the sponsors, is the drop off point for donations. For more information, call 305557-0356.

Hialeah Miami Lakes High swimmer Jocelyn Ruiz wins two district championships

Hialeah Miami Lakes sophomore Jocelyn Ruiz won the district championship in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard backstroke for the Trojans’ swimming and diving team last week at Ransom Everglades High School. It was Ruiz’s second district championship in both events in individual competition. This year, she competed against swimmers from Doral Academy, Mater Academy and Westland. Ruiz will compete in the regional, which starts November 4 at Florida Gulf

Coast University in Fort Meyers, against 48 top-ranked student-athletes in both swimming events. Last year, she was the regional runner-up and a state qualifier. “She’s hard working, dedicated and pretty much is everything a coach expects from a student-athlete,” said Hialeah Miami Lakes swimming and diving head coach Frank Rocha. Ruiz, who’s enrolled in HML’s iPrep Magnet program with a 3.6 GPA, also will compete in the 200 meter relay and 200 freestyle relay at the regionals.

FIU football team joins in bringing storm relief to Keys

M-D College women’s volleyball team wins conference championship

FIU FOOTBALL PLAYERS joined other students in bringing relief to Hurricane Irma victims in the Florida Keys

MIAMI DADE COLLEGE Lady Sharks championship volleyball team.

Hurricane Irma forced Florida International University’s football team, along with more than 100 student-athletes from the college, to evacuate and they all relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. A week after the storm, which left South Florida in its path of destruction, the Panthers found themselves helping to brighten the day of some Monroe County special needs evacuees who made their way from the stormravaged Florida Keys. The Panthers joined members of the U.S. Public Health Service, and Monroe County Fire and Rescue, in assisting in

any way possible. Mostly, however, the players biggest asset was simply lifting the spirits of the evacuees, with simple conversation and taking the resident's minds off the destruction that awaits them in the Keys. During Hurricane Irma, FIU provided shelter to more than 500 Monroe County evacuees, including 139 persons with special needs. And it was not only athletes making an impact, but students and staff assisted the less fortunate as well. Jazz students, members of the FIU Marching Band and the Amernet String Quartet performed for them.

Pace High School’s volleyball team finishes a strong season PAGE 20

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Following a strong run in the regular season, the Pace High School’s girls volleyball team ended the post-season after a 30 loss to Pine Crest High School at the Class A Regional Quarterfinals on Wednesday, October 25.

While the Spartans finished 13-6 overall this season, they fought hard in the hopes for a State Championship title with wins against district opponents iMater Prep Academy, MAST Academy and Miami Edison Senior High. During the last home game on October 10, the Spartans cel-

ebrated the senior teammates at “Senior Night.” The gym at Pace High School was decorated with balloons and posters commemorating the hard work and dedication each of the eight senior players had put into making this a successful season for the Spartans.

Former HML quarterback and NFL star Rohan Davy opens Quick 6 Catering business in Baton Rouge Former NFL and Arena football quarterback Rohan Davey is showing fans not only can he cook on the football field but in the kitchen as well. The former Hialeah Miami Lakes High standout is the new owner and chef of Quick 6 Catering, an authentic Jamaican Cuisine based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Quick 6 Catering also caters to tailgate parties at LSU home games, especially against the Tigers’ SEC rivals, including Mississippi State, Alabama, and Ole Miss. Davey, a former All-American at LSU and enshrined in the Tigers’ Hall of Fame, developed

a knack for cooking in high school and dreamed of opening its own restaurant one day after he retired from playing professional football. What better business than a catering service that has become popular outside the stadium, where the Jamaican-born quarterback demonstrated some of his magic, throwing for 4,415 yards and 29 touchdowns during his college career. The New England Patriots drafted Davey in the fourth round of the 2002 NFL draft, where he backed up future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, and won two Super Bowls.

PACE GRADUATE Sage Lewis, now a FIU linebacker, is also cooking gourmet meals as a culinary arts major.

‘The Spot’ hosts bowling excursion

Miami Lakes middle and high school students are invited to join “The Spot” for a field trip to Bowlero Miami in Dolphin Mall, 11501 N.W. 12 Street, at 10 a.m. on November 4. Teens can experience Miami’s hottest new place to chill and have a ball as they “let it roll” on 32 lanes, or challenge their friends to a round of laser tag. Food and transportation will be provided to and from the Youth Center, 6075 Miami Lakes Drive East. Registration fee is $10.

Florida International University sophomore linebacker Sage Lewis is not only cooking on the gridiron, but can prepare a gourmet meal in the kitchen. The 6-1, 240-pound former Pace standout loves to cook and, of course, chose culinary arts as his major. Lewis said he learned how to cook by watching the Food Channel while growing up, diligently watched world-renowned chefs dish up a variety of meals on the many different shows that the channel offers. But don’t mistake his culinary talent for tenderheartedness; he’s always hungry on the football field and can taste the intensity he brings to the team when he crushes the competition. “I love hitting people,” he said. “When I first came to FIU, I was the hit dummy.” But under the tutelage of senior linebackers Treyvon Williams and Anthony Went, Lewis’ new recipe for success on the college level has earned him a spot on the Panthers’ linebacking corps this season. Lewis is fourth on the team in tackles with 30 behind Williams (39) and Went (36) and safety Bryce Canada (32). He may have taught himself how to cook but the lessons on the football field are paying off and may start later this season or next season. "Sage makes plays," said FIU defensive coordinator and line-

backers coach Brent Guy. "One that jumps out at me is when they ran the reverse at Rice and he got a tackle for a loss on it. They ran a screen one time and he set the edge for us. He feels things naturally like screen plays and reverses that a lot of guys would be running wild trying to get to the front side. He can see that stuff happening which is a natural ability. I haven't taught him that." The Panthers are 4-2 (2-1 CUSA) this season under first year coach Butch Davis, including an upset victory over Tulane as the Panthers’ defense held the Green Wave to 10 points. Lewis recorded 5 tackles in the game. Before running through the tunnel at Riccardo Silva Stadium, Lewis left his mark at Pace under head coach Mario Smith. He was named Class 4A First-Team All-State player in 2014, First Team All-Dade County, and he finished the 2014 season with 105 tackles and eight sacks. He also recorded more than 100 tackles for his second-consecutive season and registered 125 tackles during his junior season. FIU recruited Lewis and after he was redshirted his freshmen year, he played in 11 games and registered 27 tackles (11 solo) with 2.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry.

St. Thomas men’s soccer team captures second Sun Conference championship

The latter victory marked the eighth regular season Sun Conference championship for St. Thomas with the last regular season title coming in 2012. Federico Moronell and Jon Quintana each scored goals for the Bobcats. The scoring was opened up by Moronell, early

on in the match in the 11th minute, the goal was his team leading 12th of the season. Just before the halftime whistle the Bobcats netted another goal, this time from Quintana, his third of the season off an assist from Danny Martinez, which was his third. Goalkeeper Connor Christie recorded another clean sheet for his efforts in net, only needing two saves behind the strong defense of the Bobcats. STU has now outscored conference opponents 29-2 with five shutouts through its seven conference games played this season.

Free smartphones and student internet access thanks to Sprint’s ‘1Million Project’

Sprint’s “1Million Project” was designed to help one million high school students in the U.S. who do not have Internet access at home reach their full potential by giving them devices and free high-speed Internet access. In Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), Sprint will distribute 14,000 free wireless devices and service to participating M-DCPS students for up to four years while they attend high school. Through the program students can receive a free smartphone, tablet, or hotspot device. A total of 3 GB per month of free highspeed LTE data while on the Sprint network and unlimited data is available at 2G speeds if the usage exceeds 3 GB in a month. Those that receive a smartphone will receive free hotspot capability and unlimited domestic calls and texts while on the Sprint network. Additionally “Sprint Guardian,” a free content filter solution on the network designed to block access to content deemed harmful to minors as required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) will also be included. More than 200 students in MDCPS received wireless devices, tutorials, device set-up, and a help-desk for students at the device distribution that took place on Thursday October 6 at William H. St. Thomas University senior Brandon Keller and graduate student Yanelis Madrigal were picked to participate in an internship program at the office of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio to learn first hand about the operations of the U.S. government. Yanelis, who earned an undergraduate degree from STU and is currently working toward a graduate degree in criminal justice, said the experience will strengthen her understanding of local and state politics and legal matters. “Aside from answering constituents’ calls, we also deal with a range of issues like immigration, housing and tourist ST. Spanish Lake Elementary School (SLE) students paid tribute to their Hispanic heritage, customs, and culture throughout the month of October in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. With a majority of SLE's student population coming from a Hispanic background, they are even more engaged in the study of how Hispanic people have positively influenced and enriched the nation with contributions. The culminating activity for the school is celebrated with a Hispanic Heritage Dress Up Day and a Food Tasting experience. The students are thankful to others who have lent a helping hand to help them and their families settle in the United States. Therefore, they actively give back through supporting The United Way Student Campaign throughout the month of October with various dress up days. Students’ favorite days this year were Ugly Tie Day, Glam Dress Up Day, Rock N Roll Dress Up, Inside Out Day, and Disney Dress Up Day.

M. Lakes resident Marisel Gamez graduates law school, passes Florida bar exam

Marisel Gamez, a Miami Lakes resident since 2001, recently graduated from law school and passed the Florida Bar exam in September. Gamez attended the University of Florida to earn two bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and English. A longtime devoted student who excelled in high school, graduating in the top 10 percent, and also excelled in undergraduate studies, it was a natural transition to pursue a law degree at the Florida International University College of Law. Gamez graduated in May and after passing the bar exam, was officially sworn in by Senior Judge Phyllis Kotey on September 19. “I wanted to go to law school because I am committed to helping others and I believe that offering legal services contributes to being an integral part of the justice system,” Gamez said. Gamez began working as a staff attorney for the Florida Supreme Court in October. In celebration of her accomplishments, Gamez traveled to Japan and Washington, D.C.
