Arrive early and bring family and friends before the festival begins to take advantage of the sales in honor of Small Business Saturday – a day to celebrate

Former Miami Lakes mayor Michael Pizzi amended his lawsuit against the town following a recent court’s decision to dismiss the litigation in which he’s seeking about $3 million in attorney’s fees from his criminal trial on federal public corruption charges in 2014. It’s the third amended complaint that Pizzi’s lawyers filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court since he sued Miami Lakes in 2015. The court gave Pizzi 20 days to amend his lawsuit after it rejected the complaint, and ruled that the former mayor would not be entitled to seek additional attorney’s fees in his case against the town. According to the court’s decision on October 13, its ruling was based on his federal indictment which doesn’t support an inference that he acted for a

public purpose when Pizzi was arrested and put on trial for corruption but a jury acquitted him on all seven charges. “Thus, the lawsuit has been refiled and remains pending on all counts,” Pizzi said in prepared statement. “We expect the lawsuit to be successful.” On the issue of the court’s ruling that he cannot seek additional attorney’s fees, (judge’s order dismissed with prejudice), Pizzi said Miami Lakes claimed that Medley, where he worked as the town attorney at the time of his arrest, should pay half of the legal fees and be part of the lawsuit. Town Attorney Raul Gastesi said the judge’s decision includes no additional attorney’s fees in Pizzi’s case against Miami Lakes. “The ruling says he can no (Please see Page 2)

and support small businesses and all they do for the local community. Winners of the recent Town of Miami Lakes Economic Development Committee’s “Best of Miami Lakes” survey will be honored during the festival. “Residents of Miami Lakes and neighboring cities have celebrated the annual Festival of Lights with its time-honored traditions and heartwarming experiences for over three decades,” said Andrea Graham Rechichi, vice president of Corporate and Customer Relations at The Graham Companies. “We at The Graham Companies are delighted to host this diverse multicultural tradition that, year-after-year, brings families together to celebrate the start of the holiday season.”

THE LIGHTING of Main Street is one of the featured events during the annual Festival of Lights. At last year’s festival, an overflow crowd joined 93.9 MIA host Gigi Diaz and the Debs children of Miami Lakes (Elizabeth, Ryan and Tyler) as they helped Santa pull the big switch to turn on the lights.

Gastesi sai the town would proceed to seek sanctions for “egregious” conduct in the case now that Pizzi filed a third amended lawsuit. He said the former mayor has appeared at several depositions but refused to answer questions and ignored several court orders to turn over tape recordings and other evidence that are crucial to Miami Lakes’ defense. But Pizzi, a lawyer, disputes his claim, saying he and his attorneys were prepared to answer questions, including at one deposition which was sub-

sequently canceled by the town attorneys. “I gave one deposition and my lawyers objected to some questions and said I would answer those questions after the Judge ruled on the objections, which happens every day, Pizzi said. “If Mr. Gastesi did not cancel my deposition, the other questions would have been answered. I did not refuse to answer questions at several depositions.” Pizzi added: “In a combined 100 years of being lawyers, neither myself nor any of my lawyers have ever been found to have ignored any court order or violated any judge’s order, including this one.”

Pizzi and Miami Lakes have been embroiled in a legal dispute for nearly three years, and he had to sue Florida’s top elected official to get his job back following his acquittal. Pizzi sued Governor Rick Scott in the Florida Supreme Court after he refused to reinstate him and subsequently sought litigation against Miami Lakes to force his return to Miami Lakes Town Hall. The town settled his lawsuit for attorney fees in that case for about $400,000.

Miami-Dade communicator Griselle Marino honored by Fla. International and FEMA Veteran Miami-Dade County Communicator Griselle Marino recently received two important distinctions from Florida International University (FIU) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FIU’s School of Journalism featured Marino as a notable alumna in its segment called Alumni Spotlights, which highlighted her Emmy awards, prominent interviews with world leaders and a “storied career which has landed her jobs in TV news and media relations for various Miami-Dade County departments and commissioners.” FEMA offered her a two-year appointment as a Media Relations Reservist in the External Affairs cadre, where she will be responsible for interacting with media stakeholders as an agency spokesperson providing messaging to the public. As a reservist, she will continue working for the County and will be deployed by FEMA when needed for crisis communications. Marino served as assistant director of the Office of the Chair’s Media Division during the term of then-Chairman Dennis C. Moss. “Throughout the years, Griselle has consistently demonstrated excellence in performing her duties, and I congratulate her on these two distinctions,” Moss said. “Griselle’s ability

GRISELLE MARINO to remain calm during a crisis in unparalleled.” Marino was hired as Public Information Officer at Miami International Airport in 2004, worked four years as the Public Affairs Manager for MiamiDade Fire Rescue and the Office of Emergency Management, and six years for the Office of the Chair's Media Division, where she worked her way up from Communications Specialist to Director of Media. She currently works for the County's Integrated Communications division. “I am humbled by my alma mater's recognition, and I look forward to serving in FEMA’s External Affairs cadre,” said Marino. “As a civilian communications professional, nothing will make me happier than to serve my country in time of need.”

Three financial options offered to expedite Optimist Park overhaul By David Snelling The Miami Laker staff In an effort to expedite a $4 million overhaul project for Miami Lakes Optimist Park and win back residents who use recreation facilities in Doral, Weston and Pembroke Pines, the Town Council was presented with three different finance proposals to supplant the payas-you go plan including a private partnership with a major athletic supplier company. Although an agreement with a lighting vendor to cover a portion of the cost by utilizing the savings generated from the used of more energy efficient lighting, and revenues generated from a cell tower in the park seem appealing, Council members were leaning more to a partnership with Eastbay. Eastbay is an American supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and sports equipment, which sells by direct mail, and the chief competitor for Nike and Under Armor. Longtime Optimist Club member and coach Alex Castroman broached the idea to lawmakers, in which the company might cover most of the

$2.8 million shortfall needed to complete the park’s master plan in exchange for the rights to use the park for sports events. They include college scouts clinics and summer camps, hosting state regional high school sports events, and allowing high school football teams who don’t have their own field, including Goleman and Mater Academy, to play their home games. “This brings sports back to life at the park,” Castroman said. The three finance projects are essential to the town’s coffers since Miami Lakes was forced to use some of the park’s money for the clean-up and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Irma. Town Manager Alex Rey estimated Miami Lakes spent about $1.7 million for the damages the Category 3 storm caused, and FEMA may start reimbursing the town in the next six to 12 months. Rey and his staff plan to evaluate the finance proposals and bring back the best option for Miami Lakes during a workshop to speed up the timetable which has been delayed for

more than a decade. The design of the park, which costs $200,000, is expected to be finished in the next two months. Replacing the lighting system at the park is the most expensive portion of the renovation project, costing an estimated $1.5 million. Other improvements include remodeling the basketball and tennis courts ($550,000); field and fencing configuration ($550,000); walking trail and exercise equipment ($350,000); and an airnasium ($200,000). “By then, we would know this is what we have and this is what we need to complete the project,” Rey said. Council members were in favor of all three finance plans and would like to see residents use the park again. “Bring some numbers back and let’s see where we are at that point,” said new Vice Mayor Frank Mingo. “I would like to see an investment interest for the park,” said Councilmember Luis Collazo, who displayed his baseball trophy when he played in the park.

Main Street Players open Iphigenia in Aulis on Friday, December 1

The Main Street Players present Iphigenia in Aulis in early December, the first show of the 2017-2018 season and the second MSP production performed entirely in Spanish. Where does political ambition have limits and how far can man reach to achieve them? Perhaps, even sacrificing a child? Are reflection and reasoned judgment worthy, or are men always the prey of their destiny? The last of the surviving works by the playwright Euripides, Iphigenia in Aulis is a play that questions the boundaries of ambitions and the meaning of who is really a hero. The show is directed by Isaac Polanco with Danny Nieves as the production manager. The cast includes Alejandro Milían as Agamenón, Camila Rodriguez as Ifigenia, Tamara Melían as Clitemnestra, Steven Salgado as Anciano/Mensajero, Nicolas Szantos as Menelao, Carlos Mena as Aquiles, and Noelia Villaroel, Guccyleny Martinez, Rosalyn Tavarez and Jen Gasca as Mujeres del coro. Iphigenia in Aulis runs December 1 - 17, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at

(Continued from Page 3) Mayor Manny Cid said “great” communities have great parks. “They add to the property values,” he said. The cell phone tower proposal sparked a health concern for Councilmember Marilyn Ruano. “I don’t know enough about it but I have heard the danger to be exposed on a daily basis and kids are on the field each day,” she said. “I just want to know more about it.” Miami Lakes was flirting with the idea of taking out a bank loan to complete the park but residents shot down the proposal. “The expenditures of $4 million for the park is too steep,” said activist Mirtha Mendez. “We don’t borrow money.” In other Council actions: • Council members rejected a salary increase, based on this year’s Consumer Price Index, for the mayor but will address CPI adjustments in the future.

THE MIAMI LAKER

The mayor’s annual salary of $18,000 has been the same since incorporation, and the CPI would put Cid’s pay at about $28,000. Though council members said Cid, who recused himself from the discussion, is underpaid and has done an excellent job since he became mayor last year, the current CPI was high, and that residents should decide whether he deserves a raise during next year’s town election. According to the town’s charter, the mayor is granted a salary but council members pick the amount he should earn. • Council members gave their final approval for an ordinance that requires a public hearing before lawmakers for a vertical mixed-use zoning application within the Town Center zoning district that includes a request for height exemptions. This will achieve the Town Council’s expressed desire to increase awareness of such development projects. • Lawmakers gave their final

approval for an ordinance to amend the 2016-2017 budget in response to the town’s disaster fund for Hurricane Irma cleanup and recovery expenses. According to Town Manager Alex Rey, Miami Lakes is projected to generate an operating surplus of $1.1 million, which includes the $1.3 million of carry forward approved by Council members for fiscal year 2017. In addition, $500,000 was approved for carry forward to fiscal year 2017-2018, as litigation/settlement reserve and about $150,000 represents projects that were not complete within the fiscal year and will be programmed for this year. The remaining $488,000 is the available surplus, which will be presented to the Town Council in the form of a carry forward budget amendment ordinance to appropriate funds to the 20172018 budget for one time projects. • Council members approved a resolution to exempt itself from Miami-Dade County’s Mandatory Workforce Housing program due to the lack of available residential land for development and redevelopment and the high cost of such land. • Council members approved a resolution to authorize the town manager to reach an agreement with Spin, a bikeshare company, to start a sixmonth bike share pilot program in the town. Residents can use a mobile

app for reservations to use the station-less bike sharing system. The orange-colored bikes are equipped with onboard GPS units and cellular modems. Rides cost $1 for each 30 minutes. • Council members authorized the town manager to execute a contract with Beefree (d/b/a Freebee) for on-demand transportation services for two years with three annual renewals. The town currently spends about $75,000 a year to fund the free on-demand operation, while providing expanded service via Freebee is estimated at $123,333. • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to amend the town’s site plan review procedures and creating architectural review standards. In February, Council members directed town staff to explore potential revisions of the town’s land development code and return with some recommendations. The request followed in the wake of an active development cycle that brought to light concerns over quality design and

compatibility of development. The proposed measure addresses the use of recognizable architectural genres, building scale and massing, facade treatments and materials, windows and doors, pedestrian scale and other ancillary features. Multifamily, commercial and Industrial developments requiring site plan review are subject to the new provisions and all require staff level review for compliance. • Council members approved Cid’s proposal to amend the town’s strategic plan and stormwater master plan to ensure that Miami Lakes is mitigating flooding issues by planning for pressurized drainage improvements and outfall back flow preventers. • Cid said MDX decided to include the 87th Avenue extension to I-75 and the Gratigny Expressway in its transportation improvement plans, four months after Florida Governor Rick Scott vetoed $1.5 million for the project. Cid said ground breaking for the project is set to begin in the fall of next year.

Pace nails Key West and advances to regional final Pace High’s football team clobbered Key West, 31-7, in the regional 4-4A semifinal game, setting a much anticipated rematch with University, which defeated the Spartans during the regular season, and a team that handed Pace its last playoff loss. Pace (9-2) returned to the playoff following a seven year drought and advanced to the regional final game this Friday against the Sharks, who escaped with a 27-22 victory over the Spartans late in the game in September. In the Key West game, Pace rushed for 285 years, as the Conch’s defense couldn’t slow down the Spartans. Pace head coach Joe Zaccheo’s game plan was to run the ball from start to finish, and may use the same strategy against the 8-1 Sharks.

On the Spartans’ first possession of the game, they rushed for 67 yards on nine plays without throwing a single pass, taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Pace also recorded a 53-yard rushing touchdown drive in the third quarter, as the Spartans led 21-7. Running back Tyrone Douglas led the Spartans with 112 rushing yards on 16 carries and one touchdown, and Willie Floyd recorded 80 rushing yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns. The Spartans’ defense kept the Conch’s at bay for much of the game but allowed Key West (8-3) to score a touchdown, as Paton Hummell scored on a 21 yard pass to cut Pace’s deficit 14-7 at halftime. Mater Academy falls in regional semifinal Mater Academy (7-6) couldn’t keep up with Palm Beach Dwyer, as the Panthers routed the Lions, 43-13, in the regional semifinal game last week. Dwyer scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and scored 16 points in the third quarter, as the Lions’ defense appeared helpless. Dwyer also scored 10 points in the third quarter. The Lions’ offense got a little spark in the second quarter by scoring 6 points, and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter but the game was already out of reach. The Panthers (10-2) will play Doral Academy (11-2) in the regional final this Friday.

By Maria Lopez Special to The Miami Laker In the fertile grounds of Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy, students and staff grow almost as quickly as the arboretum. Although a combined effort, one man is the driving force behind the school’s evergreen thumb – Andrew Kearns. Kearns has worked daily to educate and protect the native wildlife of South Florida. A teacher of 32 years, Kearns has used his curiosity in flora and fauna to drive his projects such as the Million Orchid Project. Several contributors shared his vision and funded his endeavors. Fairchild Botanical Garden has partnered up with Kearns to grow the Cowhorn Orchid (Cyrtopodium punctatum) and observe their growth within the school environment. This year Kearns has moved to a larger lab with the help of the Lowe’s Toolbox For Education grant, Foundation for New Educational Initiatives, and the National Wildlife Foundation. Receiving around $10,000, he has expanded the shade house, created a new botany lab, and maintained the arboretum. There’s more room for growth and with his aspiration to study other endangered species and spread his message of “Malama Honua, Hawaiian for “Care for Island Earth.

Mater Lakes thespians present The Wizard of Oz THE MIAMI LAKER

By Jaily Gomez Special to The Miami Laker The Mater Lakes Academy Thespians took to the stage at the Lehman Theatre in October to bring The Wizard Of Oz to anticipating audiences. The Wizard of Oz is the Thespians’ first production of the 2017-2018 school year, and their second in partnership with Miami-Dade College. The show was a collaborative effort among the various arts programs at Mater Lakes, with Band, Drama, Dance and Art all contributing to its success. The shows were in played in memoriam for two senior thespians, Cristian Arocha and Sebastien Delagado, who passed away the Monday before the performance. For four intense weeks, the involved middle and high school students committed their

time and effort to the show. Featuring a cast and crew comprised entirely of students, they not only performed in the show, but created the sets, costumes, and props used during its run. Yesenia Ginzo, Thespian president, took on the role of Stage Manager for the show, conducting everything behind the scenes, from lighting to scene changes. She said of her responsibilities, “Although my job is stressful, I truly enjoy what I do and I can’t wait until it is my permanent career.” Audiences were transported to the magical land of Oz, where they laughed and smiled along with the musical’s sweetheart protagonist Dorothy Gale, a young girl living with her aunt and uncle in Kansas. When a tornado strikes their farm, Dorothy wakes up in a colorful new world where witches and

wizards are commonplace. With her newfound friends, Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion, Dorothy goes on an adventure and learns there really is “No place like home.” The leading roles were played by Veronica Ginzo (Dorothy), Brandon Gonzalez (Scarecrow), Lucas Menvielle (Tinman), and Erika Mesa (Lion). Each actor gave an energetic performance and brought new life into these classic characters that have withstood the test of time. Though The Wizard Of Oz is a timeless tale that has been told countless times before, the cast was able to put on a wildly

entertaining show that still felt new despite the story being nearly 80 years old. “Being in The Wizard Of Oz was very exciting for me. It’s one my favorite movies and now I had a chance to act in it,” said Gonzalez. “It let me step into the shoes of a young heroine and into a world of magic,” said Ginzo, who put in endless hours towards perfecting her role as Dorothy. Menvielle, who made his theatrical debut at Mater Lakes as the Tinman, adds, “This being my first production, I was thrilled with how it turned out.”

Erika Mesa, the lovable, laughable lion, said “I’m glad that I was able to spread joy to people…even if it meant making a fool of myself.” The International Thespian Society at Mater Lakes Academy is entering its third year, with over 50 members and 30 inductees for the 2017-2018 school year. Membership is lifelong, and gives students a creative and dramatic outlet for the performing arts. The next show is High School Musical, coming to the Lehman Theatre in December, featuring members of the school’s baseball and cheerleading team.

UMCARD of Miami Lakes executive director Dr. Michael Alessandri (right) and Marinela Alvarez, Hope for Autism Community Team President (left) presented the school and principal Yecenia Martinez with the plaque (middle). “This was merited thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the Bobcat Family who contributed to help the inception of new programs benefiting our local communities from our 2017 fundraiser a possibility. Thanks to all for having big hearts and giving back to our community,” said Martinez. “If itʼs in the air, itʼs in your lungs.”

Miami Lakes K-8 Center’s two honor MDCPS reaches agreement societies donate to the Branches Center with United Teachers union The National Junior Honor Society and Elementary Honor Society at Miami Lakes K-8 Center participated in the 4th Annual Costume Drive to benefit the children at Branches Community Center. Branches Community Center provides life-changing opportunities to working poor families to help them and their children

break the cycle of generational poverty. The MLK-8 honor societies worked together with the support of the community and collected over 200 costumes during the month of October and delivered them to the children that are members at the Branches Community Center. The MLK-8 students shared

Halloween treats they brought for the children and played together. The National Junior Honor Society and Elementary Honor Society at MLK-8 are determined to help the community and inspire others to be the best they can be.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has reached a tentative agreement with the United Teachers of Dade (UTD) that honors educators’ dedication and expertise, and demonstrates the District’s commitment to them. “Miami-Dade County Public Schools is privileged to have among our professional ranks a highly qualified, skilled, and caring instructional staff,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “Ensuring they have a contract that honors their dedication and talent is paramount. Despite dif-

ficult economic conditions, we have reached an agreement, through compassionate and practical negotiations, that provides teachers and instructional personnel with a compensation package that demonstrates the great respect we have and the high value we place on the work they do every single day.” The agreement includes salary increases, retention supplements for mid-to-late career teachers, and a 2018 Employee Benefit Program which continues a free option for employees inclusive of benefit enhancements.

Spanish Lakes Elementary welcomes visitors to campus

Spanish Lakes Elementary welcomed Martha GaerraKattou from US Century Bank, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing, as SLE's Principal of the Day. Gaerra-Kattou gave back to the school and to the community from greeting students in the morning, to visiting classes and partaking in lessons. She also monitored the cafeterias and in learning the ropes of running a school she appreciated the tasks taken on by the school principal, Jacqueline Arias-Gonzalez. SLE also welcomed Teach-AThon Teacher Champions, Jessica Saavedra, Wells Fargo branch manager, and her assistants, Luisa Uribe and Hector Rodriguez, to teach a fourth and fifth grade class with an informative presentation on the “The

History of Money, Money Making, Money Management, and the Banking System.” The students interacted, participated, and learned pertinent information throughout the skillfully presented lesson. The Teach-A-Thon is a twist to a Walk-A-Thon. The private business sector supports and promotes quality education for Miami-Dade County students by having friends and family sponsor their challenging but satisfying classroom teaching experience. Through The Education Fund's Teach-A-Thon, teachers benefit through stipends and grants afforded to them for innovative projects and classroom needs. To learn more visit www.educationfund.org.

In the wake of Hurricane Irma’s destruction in the Florida Keys, students from St. Thomas University and Barry University teamed up for the first-ever South Florida Catholic university disaster relief response day. Thousands of families are still reeling from the damages the Category 3 storm caused, especially since many people are unemployed due to the closure of many hotels and restaurants. Co-sponsored by the St. Thomas University Center for Community Engagement and the Barry University Center for Community Service Initiatives, the disaster relief response day brought together the universities’ staff and students with parishioners, community organizations, and local parks to support long-term relief and cleanup activities in the Florida Keys. At San Pedro Catholic Church in Tavernier, students worked to remove debris from the Church property, as well as to support local parishioners in tree removal and clean-up. At John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo, students worked on rebuilding a nature path that had been destroyed by the storm. In Marathon, closer to where Hurricane Irma had made a direct hit, students worked to clean up the Crane Point Hammock Nature Center and prepare it for re-opening to the public. “We know that the damage in

STUDENTS AND STAFF from St. Thomas and Barry Universities joined forces to help clean up disaster debris in the Keyes following Hurricane Irma. the Keys pales in comparison to what happened in Puerto Rico and other areas of the Caribbean,” said Anthony Vinciguerra, coordinator of the STU Center for Community Engage-ment. “That said, there are parts of the Keys that are still suffering, and we wanted to be able to respond. We are one Archdiocese, from Broward to Key West, and as such we felt we had to do something.” Courtney Berrien, associate director of the Barry University

Center for Community Service Initia-tives, agreed. “Barry and St. Thomas share a common commitment to making a difference in the world, and both colleges regularly have service trips and service learning classes. That said, we often operate in our own silos. Hurricane Irma provided the opportunity for us to come together, to connect to our neighbors in the keys, and to make a bigger impact by working together.”
