Station 64 opens for improved Fire-Rescue service By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The new Miami Lakes West Fire-Rescue Station 64 is a symbol of the hard work and dedication put in by town and Miami-Dade officials to help save lives on the west side of town. But one man made it all possible when it seemed so far-fetched 11 years ago. The late Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso was recognized during the grand opening of the facility, 15325 N.W. 77 Court, last week for discovering the FDOT-owned land, where the fire station now sits. He was honored posthumously for his efforts to bring another fire station to Miami Lakes, as county officials unveiled a plaque inscribed with kind words and his picture in the office room of the 13,512 square-foot facility. At a time when Miami-Dade was under a lot of pressure to buy land for a fire station to increase the emergency response time in the western fringes of Miami Lakes, Alonso, a Realtor, found the land and FDOT later turned it over to the county. “It’s only fitting to mention he was the biggest champion and advocate to make sure this happened,” Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. said to the large crowd on hand for the ceremony. “His family takes great pride and he’s looking down upon us. Today is a testament of a promise that was made and a promise that was kept.” Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi said it was a collective effort by town and county administrators to bring Station 64 to the town. He recognized former Mayor Wayne Slaton and former MiamiDade Commissioner Natacha Seijas, who were in attendance, as part a team that also made it possible for the fire station to be built in the town. “They worked hard to make

Lake Patricia resident busy at organizing winter boat parade Miami Lakes resident, Marcelino Sotolongo, has resided in the neighborhood around Lake Patricia since 1999. After seeing the Winterfest Parade in Ft. Lauderdale, Sotolongo began thinking about organizing a winter boat parade in Miami Lakes. So far five residents have committed their boats to the parade which will launch from the beach and cross Lake Patricia dressed in Christmas lights, a colorful spectacle for residents and visitors to witness from their backyards and from the beach. The winter boat parade on Lake Patricia is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 5.

this happen,” said Pizzi, who lives on the west side of town. “With a fire station near, if someone is having a heart attack, their life is going to be saved.” Pizzi said the fire station is like a neighborhood place for the Miami Lakes family. “Residents can get their blood pressure checked here, and if a cat is stuck in a tree, the fire station can help that neighbor,” he said. “The fire station is an intricate part of our town family.” Miami-Dade Fire Chief Dave Downey expressed his gratitude to Seijas and former fire chief Herminio Lorenzo, a longtime Miami Lakes resident, for their years of support and efforts for a fire station. “Chief Lorenzo pushed the issue throughout all of the stumbling blocks,” he said as a sea of firefighters and personnel looked on. “Through their efforts, the fire station is designed to serve the

community.” The Silver LEED Certified two-story triple-bay facility accommodates advance life support units. The facility includes a lobby area, bunker gear room, office space, a kitchen and dining area, day room, restroom facilities, an exercise room’ and battalion chief’s office. Two units will be assigned to the station. It will help increase service and improve response time and efficiency, enabling the county to continue providing for the health, safety, and welfare of the town and its surrounding communities. Roberto Alonso Jr. said it’s “great” to see one of his dad’s dreams come true. “He worked hard for so many years to identify land for a fire station,” he said. “And with the efforts of FDOT and the county, his dream was able to come to life.”

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Before Major George A. Perez donned a police uniform, he was a dee jay for Power 96 working with “D.J. Laz, and at a local Latin radio station, where he was living out his childhood dream. But he answered his true calling in life after his family members were victims of a crime, especially his mother. “I have a vested interest after my family fell victims to crime, my mother in particular, said Perez, who is the new Miami Lakes town police commander. “Life calls on you for something very important to do. Perez has been a police officer since 2000. Besides combating crime, he said the position was a way to establish a good relationship with law enforcement and people in the community. He previously worked for the Miami-Dade Police Homicide Bureau, investigating murders and police-involved shootings, Internal Affairs and the General Investigation Unit. “It was the most profound experience of my life, and it continues to be, he said of probing murders. “There were numerous assignments on how they affected you as a person and the impact they had on the community. When he applied for the police commander post in Miami Lakes, Perez said he did research on the entire town and he knew it was the

place where he wanted to work. The Cutler Ridge resident said he has relatives living in the town where his new position is a far cry from investigating murder cases. Since incorporation in 2000, Miami Lakes has had a relatively low crime rate. “It’s a city with no crime, he said. “I knew little about it at the time but doing research and the short time I have been working here, I feel like I know Miami Lakes. Miami Lakes is a city when it incorporated, it got it right the first time. He said he loves the hometown feeling and his family may ask him to move here. “I told my kids I was walking down Main Street and saw the pumpkin patch, he said. “The hometown feeling is something special here. Perez’s first experience with the police was as a member of the Police Explorers and Boy Scouts. During his time in the music industry, he never lost sight of becoming a police officer, and the incidents with his family members prompted a career change. “To be a police officer, you work with the community and see a lot of different things, where you can pick up the phone, which is a wonderful vehicle, and do something about things, he said. Perez said he is anxious to meet the residents of Miami Lakes and address their concerns. Perez and his wife, Christina, have two teenage children.

MAJOR GEORGE PEREZ He said being a police officer doesn’t define him. “Being a father does, he said. His hobbies are fatherhood, fishing, photography and smoking cigars. Perez said he wouldn’t mind volunteering as a dee jay for town events for kids. “I would love to do it for fun, he said.

Town joins Station 64 in encouraging residents to change smoke alarm batteries Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee is teaming up with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 64 to encourage everyone who didn’t change the batteries in their smoke detectors when they “fell back” to Daylight Savings Time last Sunday to do so now. Residents are urged to make a habit of changing the batteries in smoke detectors at least twice a year - at the beginning and end of Daylight Savings Time. If smoke alarms are more than 10 years old, it is recommended that the entire unit be replaced. For the greatness protection, install a smoke detector on every level of the home and inside each sleeping area. Also, develop an escape plan with two ways out and make sure every family member

knows what to do and where to meet outside in the fire alarm sounds. Take time to practice both a primary and secondary escape plan, so that if a real emergency occurred, the entire family would know what to do. M-D Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Abel Fernandez offered additional tips: • Test smoke alarms at least once a month to ensure that they are working properly. • Vacuum the dust from inside the detector at least once every year. • Never “borrow” a smoke detector’s battery for another use. For more information about smoke alarms and fire safety tips, visit www.miamidade.gov/fire/ safety-fire-smoke-alarms.asp.

Fewer than 4 percent of the nation’s credit unions have earned Bauer’s top rating for 25 straight years. “We have officially made our mark in the event more exclusive category of Exceptional Performance Credit Unions,” said JetStream CEO Jeanne Kucey. “JetStream Federal recognizes that we could not have reached this milestone without the support

and continued patronage of our loyal members, proving once again that together, we can achieve excellence.” In a related development, the Miami Lakes-based JetStream was the recipient of the Town of Miami Lakes 2015 Business of the Year Award presented during the recent State of the Town Address at Town Hall. In presenting the award, Mayor Michael Pizzi said, “JetStream Federal has been established in Miami Lakes for 20 years, with both their corporate headquarters and a retail branch location, and they have deeply enriched our quality of life in the Town.”

State of the Town salutes educators and volunteers By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Former Miami Lakes Councilmember Mary Collins shared a poignant anecdote that left a lasting impression on her and her family. The last request for her terminally ill daughter-in-law was to ride in the Good Year Blimp. Collins said she sought help from different organizations, including Make-A-Wish Foundation, but she didn’t have any luck for her son’s cancer-stricken wife. She then turned to Mayor Michael Pizzi, who made her daughter-in-law’s wish come true. “Teresa spent her last days riding inside the blimp. I will never, ever forget that.” Collins’ and Pizzi’s often rocky relationship as council members for seven years turned into admiration when he was elected mayor, and the rapport led to Collins introduction of him at the recent State of the Town Address. A packed crowd at Town Hall celebrated the city’s accomplishments and its 15th anniversary, and elected officials honored town staff, volunteers along with education leaders who received lifetime achievement awards. At a time when the relationship between the mayor and council members appears to be strained after he filed two lawsuits against the town to pay for his legal fees,

lawmakers put their differences aside for the event. Pizzi said the Miami Lakes of today is a far cry from the newlyminted town created in 2000, when the city had a skeleton staff and a make-shift town hall inside a store front on Main Street. “Our first city hall was a retail storefront, and we had no money, no office for the town manager, no place for our police department, no place for parks, and no place the for finance department,” Pizzi said. “We started out absolutely hard. It was really a struggle. It was a real team effort and in these short 15 years, we have become one of the finest cities in the country.” Pizzi and council members took time to honor two long-time educators, who are retiring, and town staff and volunteers who helped shape Miami Lakes to the city it is today and enhanced education for students. Miami Lakes honored Miami Lakes Educational Center principal James Parker, who is ending his career after more than 30 years, with a lifetime achievement award. “MLEC has been an A plus school for many years, and what’s so great about the school are the career programs for people to get jobs as a trucker, chef or barber,” Pizzi said. “And James Parker is the driving force at MLEC, where the kids love him and he loves

them.” Lawmakers also honored Miami Lakes K-8 Center principal Rosy Calvo with a lifetime achievement award, as her institution has been an A plus school for 15 consecutive years. She, too, is retiring. “A lady who’s a bed rock,” Pizzi said. “She has been a second mother everyday for each child at the school for 15 years. And there was no way we would do a State of the Town Address without honoring her. She has been a God send to children.” The Town Council recognized Katya Lysak, the town’s Leisure Service manager, as Town Employee of the Year. Town Manager Alex Rey said he picked her for the honor because she exemplifies what a dedicated town employee and team player means. Already with two full plates on her hands, she was asked to add another duty as special events and committees coordinator while Clarisell De Cardenas went on maternity leave. “With a smile, she said absolutely, I am here,” Rey said. “I selected a person who embodies the spirit of how a town staff operates and she’s the best example. We are so happy to have her as part of our team.” Lynn Matos, chair of the Youth

Activities Task Force, and Luis Collazo, chair of the Elderly Affairs Committee, were each named Volunteer of the Year. Pizzi choked back tears while honoring the late Sergio Campos with the Key to the Town award. Campos was president of the Loch Ness Homeowners Association for 30 years before he succumbed to cancer earlier this year. “I have never seen anyone love his neighborhood more than this man,” Pizzi said. “When you see Loch Ness, you think of Sergio Campos because he was synonymous with that neighborhood.” The mayor said the state of the town is strong and he expects it to get better in the future. The new youth center is expected to open this month and the new Miami Lakes Optimist Club house is slated to be up and running next year, Pizzi said. He said Miami Lakes launched a pilot program following incorporation with Miami-Dade to allow residents to come to Town Hall to obtain building and zoning permits instead of traveling to County Hall in downtown Miami. As a result, the program is perhaps the most successful among other municipal cities, Pizzi said. This year, the mayor said Miami Lakes completed the Town Center zoning district map, increased public transportation by

15th ANNUAL

nine percent, finished construction of the Greenway on N.W. 77 Court, and achieved a Class Five flood insurance rating. Pizzi said Miami Lakes’ amnesty program in which residents brought their properties up to code for reduced costs and sometimes at no charge, was also a success to reflect the living standards of the 6.5 square-mile town. For parks and recreation, Pizzi said the town completed its greenways and trails master plan, set to open up the new dog park next year and is working diligently to turn the Par 3 golf course to a passive park. Pizzi also recognized local dignitaries who were on hand, including Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Miami-Dade Police Director J.D. Patterson, Opa-locka Mayor Myra Taylor and a representative from Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s office. Pizzi acknowledged that Gimenez played a big role for upgrading municipal services in Miami Lakes, following years of bickering and stalemate with the county. “Our relationship with the county was rocky, but when he became mayor, he turned over our parks, built the new fire station and opened up N.W. 87 Avenue,” Pizzi said. “He kept his promise and I want to thank him.”

THE MIAMI LAKER

Council considers rezoning, accepting park donation By The Miami Laker staff As the town of Miami Lakes lacks money to convert a golf course to a passive park, a development agreement for a residential development site gives residents their best chance for an open green space nature area. At the November 3 regular meeting, council members were expected to discuss and vote on a resolution to accept a dedication of 5.19 acres of the historic landmark Madden’s Hammock, located at Miami Lakes Drive and N.W. 87 Avenue, for a passive park, and a $200,000 donation by the land owner to upgrade the neighborhood parks concurrency, as a requirement for the Dunnwoody Lakes residential development. As part of the passive park use agreement, residents will not have access to the nature area on the weekend. Access to the passive park would be available from Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Once the agreement is approved, residents can use the

passive park for hiking, walking, biking and other nature-like activities. Recreation sports, such as soccer and football, will not be allowed. The land is currently owned by the Lowell Dunn family which has a contract to sell it to the Lennar Corporation. Lennar is seeking to make some adjustments to the original zoning agreement that lawmakers approved in 2002. At the meeting, lawmakers discussed and either voted or deferred three resolutions created by town staff as they relate to some of the proposed changes to the zoning plans. Town staff asked council members to first approve a resolution on applications for approval of an alternate site plan, six variances and modifications of the Declaration of Restrictions, for the Dunnwoody Lakes residential development, including for open spaces within the development, architectural elevations for townhouses, paving, grading and drainage plans, landscaping, sig-

nage and street lighting. In addition, the resolution calls for a ten-foot-wide landscape buffer indicated on the alternative site plan that would be used for the planting of street trees. Lawmakers were also asked to approve a resolution to authorize town staff to grant transportation concurrency to the Dunnwoody Lakes residential development under the terms of a mobility fee system, but only if the council later adopts an ordinance. The resolution would allow town staff, if the council adopts the ordinance, to create a mobility fee system in the future as contemplated in the recently-completed Alternative to Concurrency study, to grant transportation concurrency in whole or in part, to the Dunnwoody Lakes residential development according to the provisions of the new ordinance. A new mobility fee system would consider and fund all modes of transportation, including, not exclusively, roads. Town staff has also asked the Town Council to adopt a resolution expressing support for the creation of a community development district (CDD) for a potential Dunnwoody Lakes residential development. By supporting the creation of the Centre Lake Community Development, Miami-Dade County retains to the authority to create the CDD through an ordinance, but in doing so requires a resolution of support from the town. Florida law requires the creation of CDDs in order to provide

capital infrastructure to serve growth or projected growth in a defined area without burdening the general taxpayers of the larger jurisdiction. In the Dunnwoody Lakes case, the primary responsibilities would be construction and maintenance of private roads, drainage facilities and pocket parks for the Dunnwoody Lakes residential development. The CDD would have taxing authority over the land within its boundaries. In other town news: • The Council was expected to give their final approval for an ordinance to remove the requirement that rooftop air conditioning units on town homes be screened from view at eye level and instead require that such units be a neutral color. The town’s land development code mandates that where air conditioning equipment is installed on the roof of townhouse properties, that the equipment be screened from view at eye level (five feet, six inches) from the streets and adjoining properties. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution to authorize the town manager to assign the agreement with CRW Systems Inc., to SunGard Public Sector Inc., to provide annual maintenance services for the town’s permitting and code enforcement software System. SunGard recently purchased CRW. • Lawmakers were expected to approve a resolution to adopt the town’s new Strategic Plan in which residents gave input on how Miami Lakes should look over the next ten years. Some of the residents’ feedback, through a survey, include enhance mobility, pursue economic development and enhance the vibrancy of community hubs and activity centers, enhance signature

beauty and park landscape, and achieve better communication, transparency and public participation on all issues. • Lawmakers were expected to discuss and vote or defer a resolution for town staff’s approval for a preliminary plat for a property at 7242 Loch Ness Drive in an attempt to subdivide the parcel into five single family lots. Before the preliminary site plans were submitted to the town, residents earlier this year asked lawmakers to reject the proposal because additional cars would add to the traffic congestion in a oneway-in, one-way-out community. • Lawmakers were expected to vote on modifications to the town’s final 2014-2015 budget to reflect that expenditures were below appropriations in each fund. The changes from the general fund total departmental expenditures are about $465.000 less than budgeted. Litigation for Michael Pizzi’s lawsuit has exceeded the town’s legal department’s amended budget by $93,785. The town manager is asking funds be transferred from the surplus of the police department’s budget, increasing the town attorney’s costs to $639,785 thus far. For Community and Leisure service, the department’s total expenses have exceeded appropriations at its level by $137,850, including salary and benefits and covering the expenses at Royal Oaks Park as well as installation of sod around the concession area. In addition, the town experienced a net increase of $16,250 for utility expenses at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. For public works, total expenses are well within the department’s total budget, however, a revision of $10,000 is needed to cover expenses due to expensive repairs of the On-Demand bus.

Vergara, an 11-year-old Miami Lakes Middle schooler, collapsed in the middle of dance practice at Miami Dancity Studios surround-

ed by fellow dancers, friends, and studio owner, Yvonne Alvarez. Vergara had been dancing since she was a toddler at Dance Creations Dance Studio (DCDA) in Hialeah and had recently begun attending Miami Dancity Studios. “Breanna story has so much to it,” said Alvarez. “She was extremely talented and would have been one of the strongest dancers here. The little time we had with her was enough to fall in love with her. She clicked right away with all the dancers and formed friendships.” Despite the immediate application of CPR by nurses and an ambulance that arrived approximately 5 minutes later, Vergara succumbed to Wolff-ParkinsonWhite syndrome (WPW). WPW is an electrical heart abnormality that is often asymptomatic and can be cured with surgery. The defect is easily picked up on an electrocardiogram (EKG). However as most pediatricians don’t suggest EKG’s unless they suspect one is needed,

intent to offer opportunities for children to participate in extracurricular activities, such as dance, while creating awards for heart screenings in an effort to identify children at risk of WPW and any other form of sudden cardiac arrest. In the past year the foundation has donated Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices to Real Dance Studio at Lighthouse Point and DCDA, and will be donating one to Intensity Dancer’s Studio. We Get Letters: Resident thanks police, fire rescue teams for fast work at accident To the Editor: The Miami Laker On Monday, October 5, my daughter and I were struck by a car while crossing the street. Miami Lakes Police and Station 1 Fire Rescue came to our rescue as well as a Publix employee, a good samaritan. I would like to thank them all for their kindness and for helping my daughter and myself that day. People have criticized the police, fire rescue, the community and our service aides recently, and it’s time that people start thanking them instead. They do their jobs and are great at it. I am happy to say that the team that served us that day were absolutely awesome. It was quite a serious situation but they were able to put us at ease and got us to laugh and made us feel as comfortable as possible. I didn’t get to do my groceries that day and I’m not sure when I’ll be able to go because money will be tight from paying hospital bills, but I am glad to say that although my daughter and I are bruised up and bedridden, I’m glad we are alive and well. Thank you once again for having such great employees! Magda Peña

Pace volleyball team raises awareness for breast cancer By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s girls varsity volleyball team has seen great success under head coach Markia Brown-Seetal, winning the district championship in 2014. Thus far, the 2015 season has been no different, as the team netted a 6-3 district record and an 11-7 overall record.

While October was the month for district and regional finals in volleyball, it was also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, something that the team recognized by wearing special jerseys. BrownSeetal suggested the jerseys, as the teams had worn pink socks and ribbons for last year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sharell Nairn, the team’s mid-

dle blocker/outside hitter, has been one of the team’s key players, along with her fellow seniors Sophia Gonzalez, Lauren Hoffman, Melanie Sandoval, and Arianna Mitchell. “The chemistry we had last season is still there,” said Nairn when asked of the team’s success in 2015. She believes that junior Alyssa Jean Jacques will continue

to be a key player for the team next season. The team continued its postseason with a 3-2 win in the district semi-final against MAST

Academy on October 20 before ending their season with a hardfought 3-2 loss to La Salle in the district finals on October 22.

Alexis Garcia plans to run 1,000 miles across Cuba raising funds for footware

Let’s Play PickLEball!

COURTS ARE OPEN MONDAY - FRIDAY FROM 12 NOON TO 3 PM

Cuban native Alexis Garcia has not forgotten where he came from or his roots. He saw a need for kids to have shoes in his poverty-stricken homeland, and instead of raising money the natural way to buy scores of footware, he’s taken a different route. Garcia, 53, will run across the entire country, 1,000 miles in 35 days, as his support team will document his journey that is set to begin on Tuesday, November 10, from the eastern most point, Punta de Maisi, to the western most point, Cabo de San Antonio.

The Miami Lakes K-8 Center physical education teacher said his coach, Lisa Smith-Batchen and Sister Marybeth Lloyd, have inspired him to help raise money through the Dreamchaser foundation for the kids in Cuba. “I want to raise as much money as I can to buy running sneakers for as many Cuban children as possible, hopefully all of them,” he said. “I know from real life experience anything is possible. I want to show every child in Cuba dreams really can come true.” The Miami Lakes resident said he will run at least 30 miles per day until he reaches his goal. His wife, Marlene Garcia, will be running with him, running five to 10 miles a day. Garcia has spent months training for his long journey across Cuba, the biggest challenge of his running career. But he’s up to it.

BGEC’s Ingy Cruz honored with 2015 Ethics Award By R.A. Romero and David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust awarded Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) teacher and Social Studies Department Chair, Ingy Cruz, the 2015 Ethical Gover-

High School football roundup American Senior High’s football team beat North Miami Beach, 46-22, last week and used the game as a tune-up for the playoffs that start in two weeks. The Patriots clinched a postseason berth two weeks ago but continued to roll past opponents, as they try to get over the hump by advancing to the second round. American has lost four consecutive first round playoff games after winning the district championship. In the North Miami Beach game, the Patriots gave their upcoming playoff opponents something to ponder if they should meet. American’s defense forced two fumbles, and an interception sealed the game. Monsignor Edward Pace beat Keys Gate, 45-20, and Norland crushed Hialeah Miami Lakes, 35-0, during the Vikings’ homecoming week. After Northwestern eliminated Norland from playoff contention, the Vikings took their frustration out on the Trojans, breaking open the game with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Rodrick Robinson to Jordan Robinson. From there, Norland’s offense exploited Hialeah Miami Lakes’ defense, scoring 21 points in the second quarter. The Vikings’ defense held the Trojans to only 19 yards in the game and forced two turnovers. Mater Academy suffered its first loss of the season last Friday as Sunset High captured the District 16-7A championship with a 24-16 win. The Knights will host a regional quarterfinal on November 13.

School Board approves three Hantman proposals Miami-Dade Public School Board unanimously approved three items proposed by Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman encouraging WLRN Television and Radio to keep developing educational programming that will enhance and support MiamiDade County Public Schools’ educational programs, and endorsing National Parental Involvement Day on November 19, and National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month in October.

nance Day teacher award for her work leading the next generation in community activism. Cruz was awarded on October 22 at a special assembly held at BGEC. “I feel extremely honored that I was even thought of for this award,” said Cruz. “It was with great humility and gratitude that I accepted the 2015 Ethical Governance Day teacher award. As a teacher I put my heart into my work because it is what drives me, but to be recognized for doing what in fact should be an obligation is humbling.” Cruz began working in MiamiDade County Public Schools as a paraprofessional, and later as a substitute while in college before she became a teacher in 1997. She was recognized as the 1996 Beginning Teacher of the Year at Miami Lakes Middle School and the 2006 Lawton Chiles Middle School Teacher of the Year, and led the winning team of students at the 2014 Mock Trial competition, earning second place in 2015. She has been teaching at BGEC for the past 11 years and became involved with the school’s law studies program at its inception three years ago. “I have been blessed to work at a great school with an amazing group of students and I attribute much of my success to the hard work of the students I teach,” said Cruz. The Ethics Commission Board presented the award based on the school district’s recommendation. The award is given to one teacher every year. Her students earned first place statewide in the Project Citizen Portfolio Showcase and Oral Hearings in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, her students created “Life on the Line,” addressing the need

to provide protection of Good Samaritans who report alcoholrelated medical incidents. The 2015 project focused on trying to increase job opportunities for adults with Autism. Cruz’s class is currently working on a new Project Citizen focused on helping to prevent the loss of life for children from undetected heart disease. The project was inspired by Breanna Vergara, a dancer at Miami Dancity Studios and Miami Lakes Middle School student who died suddenly during a dance rehearsal due to an undiagnosed and asymptomatic heart condition, Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. A few students from BGEC were present on the night of the incident and a handful of students knew her from nearby neighborhoods. The project is still in the preliminary stages of research but will eventually move toward creating policies that could save lives. The students in Cruz’s class are a part of the school’s Civic Engagement Academy (CEA) for citizenship and public service. Seventh grade students will also be participating in the district’s Mock Trial competition in February. Sixth graders are working on a Leadership Building community service project to provide warm soups meals to homeless children once a month from December to March. Cruz also serves as liaison for the Close Up program that sends students to Washington, D.C. where they can learn more. “I feel that I have a great group of students this year with a world of potential and that with hard work and dedication they will achieve great success,” said Cruz.

INGY CRUZ, Social Studies Department chair at Bob Graham Education Center, honored as Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust’s Teacher of the Year.

Wettergren, Hopkins, and their teammates Ethan Smart, Michelle Garcia-Cordero, and Michelangelo Gallo were coached by former PGA Tour player Manny Zerman to the district tournament in October. This successful season for Pace’s golf team comes after the program returned following a several-year hiatus. Wettergren and Hopkins scored a 78 and 75 respectively to advance from districts.

At regionals, Wettergren came within two stokes of making it to the state tournament with a score of 81, while Hopkins came within three strokes with a score of 82. “Zerman was the best thing that could have happened to the team,” said Hopkins. He cited Zerman’s experience playing on the PGA Tour helped him to “focus and stay positive” when playing. Wettergren had been excited for the return of the school’s golf program, after having played on the team his freshmen year. He said, “I was excited to have been a part of the team and the other players were like brothers to us.” Wettergren plans on playing collegiate golf once he graduates from Pace.

Pace High names Hedda Falcon Teacher of the Year

HEDDA FALCON, Pace’s Teacher of the Year

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Hedda Falcon admits that she is “very” shy. In fact, when she initially learned that she was named Monsignor Pace High’s Teacher of the Year for 2015-2016, the Cubaborn woman was “embarrassed.” “My first reaction was shocking and very embarrassing because I am very shy,” said the computer lead teacher for the school’s STEM Academy program. “I don’t like being the center of attention.” But when the accolade finally sank in, she was humbled and honored to be the teacher of the year for a school she has called home for 12 years. “I was very honored and it was a big deal for me,” she said. “It was very humbling and an honor that sunk into my soul.” Falcon tackles many duties as a teacher, including operating the new STEM Academy program, where students can learn more about science, (biology, chemistry and coding), technology, engineering and mathematics. Falcon said her goal is to expose her students to as much information as possible involving real work and issues to help enhance their skills and knowledge that would expand beyond the classroom. She said she has seen little miracles happen in her classroom. Falcon said some students struggled with the course and felt dejected and alienated themselves from the rest of their peers.

“They would come into my classroom and won’t talk,” she said. “They go and sit in the corner.” Falcon’s added dimension is helping those students with learning disabilities to find their niche and give them confidence in their abilities to build a path for success. And it worked. Some students would rather visit the computer lab during after school hours instead of playing sports. She said the pupils discovered their potential by interacting with their peers in the computer lab and Pace’s Robotic Club, where they compete in groups by creating some of the best technology science projects in the program. “One student built a gadget using a phone charger from a video game,” she said. “They are just not normally things kids do. They create video games, where they learn to socialize with each other.” During the school’s inaugural STEM Boot Camp in April, middle-school students raced the K’NEX cars that they build as part of the engineering workshop at Pace. “Kids love to be in the lab creating things,” Falcon said. But the fun ends when students must put their minds to the test during the Hour of Code with Microsoft, a course that hopes to empower the next generation of career-oriented people who are seeking a competitive job market. “The computer programming is

the hardest one and it’s not fun at all,” Falcon said. “The students must think critically, and some are so successful at it that they go on to college and become doctors.” Falcon never thought about teaching after she graduated from Florida International University with a degree in communications and a minor in visual arts. She wanted to pursue an art career but her parents deterred her because she wouldn’t make any money. So instead, Falcon worked in the advertising industry for 10 years. But the heavy work load and traveling took a toll on her. “I never had the summer off where I can spend time with kids,” she said. “Then, someone mentioned to me about being a teacher.” She said the transition at first was nerve-wrecking. “The last thing I wanted to do was teach,” she said. “I had no idea how to handle teenagers. But building in the curriculum for teaching, I knew my business experience in advertising would help me. Then it came natural, and the students can tell I am interested in teaching them. They know I have their best interest at heart.” Falcon always goes beyond the extra mile for her school, colleges and students. “I am a perfectionist, I take on more than anyone can handle,” she said. “It’s my nature, I can’t say no. I am always helping those who ask for my help.”

U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer advises MLEC students By Vivian Bermudez Special to The Miami Laker While today Wifredo Ferrer wears a crisp, grey suit, the Hialeah boy with Cuban parents lingers; the “Cubanito” comes to the surface as he retells stories from his childhood and his climb to the top. The Spanish he learned as a child and that his “mom forced [him] to keep,” swirls into his English, as he slips comfortably, into occasional Spanglish during a visit to Miami Lakes Educational Center. The U.S. Attorney for Southern Florida grew up in a working-class area next to the Palmetto Expressway with a father who did not speak English and a mother that spoke five languages. “When the going gets tough, I remember mami y papi.” His mother struggled through an office job where she was often belittled and disrespected. His father held up a sign that read “I’ll cut your grass for $5” until he got into an accident that left him partially paralyzed. But hardships never crippled them.

If his parents instilled anything in him, he said, it was hope. The type of hope that is concise, personal and shared in three simple lessons plus the typical rule of thumb – “Moms are always right.” Number one: Nothing is more important than hard work. “95 percent of your success will be determined by how much you work,” said Ferrer to a room of college hopefuls at MLEC. “Number two: You cannot win, if you don’t play.” Ferrer learned the lesson the hard way. After receiving a Cubanstyle tongue lashing from his mom, who discovered an application in the trash because Ferrer didn’t believe that a “Cubanito from Hialeah” would be selected for a White House fellowship, he applied. It changed his life, granting him the ability to work as an assistant to a cabinet member. Ferrer graduated from Hialeah Miami Lakes High School and then the University of Miami, so he was not ready to face the antiHispanic stigma, he didn’t even know there was such a thing. “I never realized I was a minor-

ity because I was in Miami,” he said. “We are a diverse group – so many backgrounds and abilities. That’s why I love South Florida, we are an incredible mix.” But that doesn’t mean that he never faced racism. And, it didn’t only happen when he moved to Philadelphia to attend University of Pennsylvania’s Law School, but right in his own backyard. During his first job as a bank teller, a regular customer told him that he had to move “to get away from all of these Hispanics” in South Florida. Ferrer was taken aback. “He didn’t know I was Hispanic. My name is Wifredo, but it was always Willy.” Instead of getting angry, Ferrer responded with “’Bueno, que tengas un buen dia,” The man “turned all different

shades.” The message, he said, is that it is important to treat people with respect and it is important to stand up for what is right and to “be proud of who you are and where you’re from.” It is not necessary to be aggressive or confrontational, sometimes something as simple as wishing someone a nice day, in Spanish, is enough, he said. Ferrer’s career has taken many twists and turns. He’s had great opportunities. He worked with Janet Reno, the first female U.S. Attorney General. Because he spoke Spanish, he was pegged to speak to Mexico’s Attorney General about an international case. But the most important lesson came as his father was dying of bone cancer – do good.

“He said to me ‘has bien,’ and it is what I work hard to do every day with my job.” Ferrer has convicted people for different type of crimes – from human trafficking to fraud. While the job can be grueling, the Attorney, appointed by President Obama in 2010, loves it. “I pinch myself every morning,” he said, “I get to represent you all, the third largest district in the country. I get up and I do good. I get to use the law as an agent of good.” His final piece of advice to Jaguars is to pursue personal fulfillment, to value people more than money. “If you love what you do, there is no money in the world that can beat that.”

Angels Reach Academy plans Fall Crafts Festival on Nov. 14 Angels Reach Academy for Divergent Learners may be the “new kid on the block” with its new school year just opening at 12051 Okeechobee Road, but the school staff is experienced at having a fun time with the community. On Saturday, November 14, Angels Reach will host a Fall Festival and Craft Show that is free for the entire community. Mater Academy’s Judith Marty is one of state’s top six principals Mater Academy principal Judith Marty was cheered by students and teachers for being recognized as one of the top six principals in Florida. Marty is a 2015 recipient of the Florida TaxWatch Principal Leadership Awards, which annually honors the top two elementary, middle and high school principals in the state. “I am very proud to be the Mater Academy principal. Our faculty and students have always risen to the challenge to create a College-Going Culture,” said

Marty. “By increasing rigor in all classes, we have achieved a 98 percent graduation rate and 90 percent college acceptance.” The Florida TaxWatch Principal Leadership Award is the only honor given to principals who exceed expected learning gains in reading and mathematics for atrisk students in low-income, highrisk schools. No nominations are accepted for the awards; the Principal Leadership Awards is an entirely data-driven program. “As the CEO of her school,

Marty is breaking down barriers to achievement for at-risk students,” said Dominic M. Calabro, president and CEO of Florida TaxWatch. “For those who know Marty, the accolades and successes she has earned come as no surprise,” said State Representative Manny Diaz Jr.. “She is a great mentor and leader to her faculty, teachers, parents, and most importantly, her students. This honor is a testament to her tireless efforts to educate each of her students.”

MLEC’s Harbinger staff attends FIU Journalism Day By Maria Vasquez The Miami Laker staff intern On Saturday, October 17, the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA) held its 43rd Annual South Florida Journalism Day at Florida International University. Every year the association has a different theme and this year’s theme was Star Wars. “The Media Awakens” included several seminars with titles that were a play on words to the movie. “Help Me iPhone, You’re My Only Hope” was one of the creative classes featured. Yearbook representatives spoke about how to advance a publication with a smart phone. Other classes taught student journalists about how to become a marketing “yoda” to sell yearbooks, or how to “bring the galaxy home” and write stories about the local community. Several Harbinger reporters from Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) attended Journalism Day. Staff writers, Carolina Espinal and Daylin Delgado, wrote about the Keynote Speaker, Jim DeFede and a struggle he faced not too long ago as a journalist. “Journalists Awaken FSPA District 6” was the article written by Espinal and “The Media Awakened Jim DeFede” by Delgado. Additionally, The Harbinger once again won multiple awards from the Florida Scholastic Press Association. Vivian Bermudez and Maria Vasquez, last year’s layout-editors for The Harbinger, received the Fall Digital Contest’s first place award for their In-Depth Package of the newspaper. Also, Espinal entered an On-The-Spot writing contest for news in which she placed third.

THE HARBINGER’S former layout editors Vivian Bermudez and Maria Vasquez were awarded first place for an in-depth package of the Miami Lakes Educational Center newspaper.

State officials visit MLEC’s vocational programs By Nathalie Mairena Special to The Miami Laker Florida Governor Rick Scott has been making changes in the education system for years, from the new FSA testing to trying to increase per student funding. Now he has set his eyes on vocational education and he announced his new “Career In A Year” plan at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC). Scott, alongside his Lieutenant Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera and State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., was welcomed by principal James Parker and accompanied by Miami-Dade Public Schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho at MLEC, where he toured several

of the programs and strands offered and thanked those that made it all possible. The governor and those in attendance recognized MLEC as the prime example of what a vocational program should be like, and that job-specific education is what schools should be planning.. “Somehow, everyone started talking only about college,” said Carvalho, who has been MiamiDade’s superintendent for seven years and has made strides to change the education system. “That should not happen at the expense of vocational education.” During his address to the student body, Scott emphasized the importance of vocational educa-

His House Children’s Home’s Charity Gala drew 450 guests His House Children’s Home (HHCH) hosted its 12th Annual “Imagine” Charity Gala on Saturday, October 3 at The JW Marriott Marquis Miami, sponsored by Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises and Leyva Capital. Florida State Senator Rene Garcia, Salvadorian Consul in Miami Ricardo Salvador Martinez, baseball player Jeff Conine and many South Florida dignitaries were guests at the annual event to raise much needed awareness and support for South Florida’s growing number of foster kids. Chaired by Jay and Jessica Leyva and hosted by Felipe Viel, a popular TV personality, the event was attended by over 450 guests. Known for their spectacular Silent Auction items, His House Children’s Home exceeded guests’ expectations this year. In a bid to raise much needed support for children in the foster care system, guests were able to bid for highly sought after vacation getaways, autographed sports memorabilia, exquisite jewelry and various once in a lifetime experiences. Jim Gall, the professional champion auctioneer was on hand to auction off dream vacations such as an Azamara Club Cruises’ 14-19 day voyage to anywhere in the world within 66 countries, and luxurious vacation homes in East

Hampton and Tuscany during the live auction. Agnes, a former resident at HHCH, gave a very moving account of how the organization impacted her and helped shape her into the woman she has become today. A victim of an abusive relationship after losing her parents at a very young age, Agnes became a single mother at age 14 and HHCH was the only organization willing to accommodate both her and her baby. Now, Agnes who is enrolled at Florida International University, pursuing a degree in Sociology and minor in Journalism, actively mentors other young people, especially kids in the foster care system to aim high, believe in themselves and imagine themselves overcoming their present circumstances and strive for excellence in their endeavors. “It was a great pleasure to attend the His House annual gala. I want to thank everyone for your ongoing support to ensure that every child has a safe and nurturing home. Your commitment to serve the children in our community is truly inspirational,” said Senator Garcia. For more information on His House Children’s Home, the private, faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to restoring joy to the lives of children from newborn to 18 years of age, visit www.hhch.org.

With this grant program, Scott plans to put money into vocational education, calling the movement “Career In A Year” with the hope that 940,000 jobs could open with more funding to vocational programs in the near future. “I applaud the Govenor’s continued focus on education,” Diaz said. “The need for our students to be pepared to enter the workforce with high-paying jobs in emerging fields is going to be a priority for the upcoming legislative session.” “Everybody is here because they want to be here,” said Scott, speaking to both high school and adult students alike. “You can see the excitement here, because in less than a year, these students can get a great job.” Automotive and Air Conditioning strands were able to show off their hands-on experience as Scott walked through metal scraps and car engines to shake hands with the students and teachers that have made the programs possible. The governor was also able to sample food by the Culinary Strand. Scott awarded several automotive students the Governor’s Excellence in Technical Education Award, and recognized Nelson Martin from Toyota for helping the program get off the ground with contributions from the private sec-

Jose Marti Foundation, Hispanic Education Committee honor Hantman

PERLA TABARES HANTMAN’S Jose Marti Foundation award.

The accolades and recognitions keep piling up for Miami-Dade School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman. The Jose Marti Foundation and The Hispanic Education Committee recently honored Hantman during the Florida Dual Language Leadership Awards Luncheon. Hantman, a longtime Miami Lakes resident, was recognized with the Seal of Biliteracy Leadership Award for her outstanding leadership in strengthening and providing support to the expansion of bilingual and biliteracy skills among students, staff and the community. “I am honored and humbled to receive this recognition,” said Hantman. “I firmly believe the hard work this School Board has done to provide quality biliteracy programs will enrich the lives of our students and their families and prepare them for today’s global marketplace.” The School Board recently approved the Seal of Biliteracy Initiative, which recognizes high-

school graduates who have attained a high level of competency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages in addition to English. The purpose of the Seal of Biliteracy is to encourage students to study languages, certify attainment of biliteracy, provide employers with a method of identifying an individual who has language and biliteracy skills and promote world language instruction in public schools. Last school year, about 132,000 students who enrolled at MiamiDade Public Schools participated in a foreign language program promoting bilingual and biliterate education. The school district offers more than 30 specialized language programs, including the Extended Foreign Language, Dual Language and International Studies programs in bilingual education, enhancing cognitive and social growth, competitiveness in a global marketplace and understanding of diverse peoples and cultures.
