THE MIAMI LAKER

Three tested politicians square off in mayoral race The Mayoral Race: Manny Cid, who’s the cash cow in fundraising with $65,460, said he decided to run for political office for a second time to continue with his duties but this time as mayor of Miami Lakes. “I first ran in 2012 to reform government which I have accomplished via performance based budgeting, live webcasting of town council meetings and placing our contracts and check book online,” he said. “I’ve had one of the most successful council terms in town history and accomplished the following: Securing an independent zip code to be voted upon by Congress later this year, which would sharply lower auto insurance rates; secured $300,00 from the MiamiDade Library system to renovate Miami Lakes Branch Library; I took on the county on special taxing districts and when turned over to the town, residents will see a

huge savings on their tax bill; and I fought developers by implementing the mobility ordinance, which requires that developers mitigate traffic impact. I also sponsored the Royal Oaks Park playground shade canopy.” If elected the town’s new mayor, Cid said the first issue he would like to address is the Miami Lakes brand. “Whether you agree or disagree with what occurred during the past three years, I believe there is 100 percent consensus among residents that our brand took a hit,” he said. “I promise to work with all my heart and energy to rebuild the Miami Lakes brand. I also am committed to implement more community policing policies to keep our town safe.” Michael Pizzi, who has raised $35,350, offers several reasons he’s running for political office for a seventh time, saying his track record of keeping his campaign

promises makes him a cut above the rest of mayoral candidates. “I have been a strong leader who has fought for Miami Lakes and gotten things done,” he said. “I was able to lower taxes and improve services with our new Government Center and Veterans Memorial, our youth center, our new fire station and improvements to our parks. Our residents want and deserve a leader who has a vision and is a fighter who is best equipped to protect our community and get things done. Residents do not want to go back to the past or risk their future on the unknown. They know Michael Pizzi is there for them always and will protect them from outside special interests.” Pizzi said if he’s reelected, he wants to complete the projects he has already initiated that includes reducing traffic congestion on all of the town’s roadways, implementing a town-wide program for bike paths and pedestrian walking paths, improve public safety with more police officers on the city’s streets and continue to reduce taxes. “I also plan to open our senior center and promote government efficiency,” he said. “With my proposals for a transit hub, better traffic signalization and proposed new east to west roadways, I would like a 20 percent traffic reduction. I

want to make Miami Lakes a destination for economic investment and entertainment without detracting from our quality of life.” Wayne Slaton, who has raised $7,595, said he’s running for political office for a fifth time to return and protect the town’s once tranquil and highly acclaimed community, among other quality of life issues. “The number one reason I am running again to serve as mayor is to make sure Miami Lakes is maintained at the highest standards,” he said. “Number two, to lead a people friendly, small town government to serve the needs of the residents and businesses. This was a core value of the incorporation movement. And number three, to lead our government and town council by example, with integrity and regained trust. Leading by example is showing respect for everyone.” Slaton said residents are noticing a sense of government bureaucracy creeping into Miami Lakes. “Every person who works for this town should be a public servant with a philosophy of ‘How may I help you, and never ‘It’s not my job.’ Instead of saying ‘no, you can’t do that,’ we should be trying to help them find a way or an alternative,’” he said. Slaton said residents believe Miami Lakes continues to be a great place to live despite their

concerns over the lack of some services. “They are concerned that some areas are not being timely maintained, street lights out, sidewalks, roadways and drainage needing repair, trees trimmed and replaced and projects taking too long,” he said. “The Miami Lakes Optimist’s clubhouse has been under construction approaching four years, and implementation of the eight year-old master plan for the total modernization of the ball fields has not even started.” Slaton said traffic congestion is residents’ top concern. “The proposed traffic signals synchronization will be great, some day, but it’s taking years to actually do anything,” he said. “In the meantime, I’ve proposed having direct control by our police officers in the mornings and afternoon, to get out there and direct/move the traffic at the intersections.” Another concern for Slaton is senior citizens struggling to stay in their homes, and he’s proposing an increase for tax exemptions to make their lives a little more easier. “We need to identify ways and means to help needy seniors struggling, both financially and health wise, with home maintenance assistance,” he said. “We need to prioritize the construction of a senior center.”

37th annual Veterans Day Parade steps off Sunday, November 6 in Miami Lakes Over the span of thirty-plus years, the Town of Miami Lakes and the former Miami Lakes Civic Association have saluted veterans with the longest running parade in all of Miami-Dade County. This year, the Miami Lakes Veterans Committee will host the 37th annual Veterans Day Parade on Sunday, November 6. Gunny Jack Parsons has been selected as the Grand Marshal for the parade. Parsons enlisted in the Marine Corps April 1965 in Camden, New Jersey, served in the Vietnam War, and was exposed to Agent Orange. He has served the community as key note speaker at graduation speeches at dozens of local high schools. Before retiring, he was a successful businessman and raised seven sons. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Post 1966, and Golf Company 2-7 Vietnam Veterans Association. The parade route will begin at Bull Run Road and Ludlam Road (N.W. 67 Avenue), and continue south on Ludlam Road to Eagle Nest Lane, ending at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. The parade can be viewed from multiple locations along Ludlam Road from Bull Run Road to Eagle Nest Lane. Parade watchers are encour-

Nelson Rodriguez faces two challengers for Seat One For Seat One: Nelson Rodriguez said he decided to run for office for a second time because he wants to continue working on the initiatives, “I have started, such as improving traffic flow throughout the town, keeping our taxes low and protecting property values as well as our quality of life. I am committed to public service and have been a

firefighter paramedic for 28 years,” he said. Rodriguez, who has raised $13,931, said some of the issues he wants to address if reelected, are traffic, getting an additional emergency rescue unit at the new fire station, supporting the town landing its own independent zip code, public safety, maintaining fiscal responsibility and keeping the tax

rate low. “I believe that as a Town Council, we have to work cohesively, respectfully, and productively with each other to reach our common goals for the residents of Miami Lakes,” Rodriguez said. Xiomara Pazos, who has raised $5,100 for her campaign, said she decided to run for political office a second time because members of the Town Council seemed to be at odds most of the time. She also said the Town Council is dominated by men. “Our current Town Council has no diversity of thought or of any diversity of any kind,” she said. “It has no females and is an all male club. They all vote the same way and are not objective and do not keep an open mind. We need public officials who have an open mind and listen to the people and who have a vision.” Pazos said residents told her they do not know the council members. “They believe the current council is too influenced by special interests and big developers and the current council votes with big money interests and not the people,” she said. Alex Dehghani said he decided to run for political office because he has a vested interest in the town’s future, including raising his children here. “Given that I was raised here, I’ve seen the changes in Miami Lakes over the years,” he said. “I believe things can be better and should be. I know I can be an asset toward that future and I’m excited

to prove it.” If elected, Dehghani said he would like to address various issues. “Unreasonable expenditures, the growing traffic at previously unheard of times, taking affirmative steps to address the Zika epidemic, and work with the police and the Town Council to propose legislation to ensure the installation of security cameras in homes to address the spike in home robberies in recent years,” he said. Dehghani, who has raised $1,000, said voters are informing him about their views. “I value them greatly,” he said. “Their views make up my platform and

I’m excited for the opportunity to take on those issues on their behalf,” he said. He said residents are frustrated with the amount of money that has been spent on the mayor’s lawsuits regarding his legal bills from his reinstatement and criminal cases. But their biggest concern is the Zika virus. “There are pregnant women and families who live near our lakes and canals that are genuinely frightened of being bitten by a mosquito carrying the Zika virus. Our residents are speaking loud and clear – and we have to listen to them.”

Other local races face voters during the November 8 election On November 8, residents of northwest Miami-Dade will vote for a U.S. Senator, county mayor, a state representative and state senator and several judicial candidates during the most anticipated presidential election in U.S. history. Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio will face off against former Congressman Patrick Murphy, a Democrat, to represent Florida residents in the Nation’s Capitol. Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez is facing former MiamiDade County School Board member Raquel Regalado, who’s seeking to unseat the two-term mayor and follow in her father’s footsteps.

Regalado is the daughter of Miami City Mayor Tomas Regalado. State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., a Republican and school administrator, is being challenged by criminal defense attorney and Democrat Ivette Gonzalez Petkovich for District 103, which represents Miami Lakes, Hialeah and other surrounding communities. Miami Springs Democrat Anabella Grohoski Peralta is seeking to defeat Republican State Senator and hospital administrator Rene Garcia in District 36, which also represents the cities of Hialeah and Miami Lakes, Miami Springs and surrounding unincorporated areas.

porated,” she said. “The challenge for me is to win the election.” If elected, Delgado, who has raised $8,105, said the first thing she would do is make sure rules and procedures are in place regarding ethics. “In particular, if you are receiving or have received a campaign contribution from an individual or entity has a matter pending before the town, be it a permit or otherwise, that council member should disclose the conflict and recuse themselves from any decision in the matter,” she said. “This is just one example of true transparency in government.” Delgado said, “As I walk through the town, I find that my concerns are voiced by many, yet heard by few. People in the town are dissatisfied with the way the town is working. Our Town Council has failed Miami Lakes. They do not represent the will of the people. The Town Council votes in blocks because of the small clicks that control our town. I want to be the voice of the people.” Tony Lama, who has raised $31,931, said he is running for a second term because he wants to restore civility to the Town Council, increase transparency, change the way the community engages with its public servants, maintain and improve service levels and maintain a low tax rate. “I’m proud to say that we’ve done that and made great progress on so many other fronts,” Lama

said. “I sponsored the town’s mobile application that is used by over a thousand residents to report concerns and areas of improvement and create accountability. And despite our challenges, we have done this without increasing taxes.” Lama said he is not done with his work to continue to make Miami Lakes the best city to live, work and play. If reelected, Lama said he wants to remain focused on alleviating the town’s traffic conditions, among other significant issues. “For too long, elected officials have kicked the can down the road on addressing our traffic issues,” he said. “Part of this is seeing to it that some of the Complete Street initiatives my colleagues and I have supported are rolled out as we have committed to the residents. I will remain focused on executing our beautification master plan which includes keeping our lakes beautiful that is critical to increasing the value of our homes.” Lama also said he will continue to look out for senior citizens. “We do a lot for our seniors and I vow to fight for their needs, but we can, with the support of our local businesses, do more to serve their needs” he said. “I will remain committed to working with our business community and serving our youths. The quality of our schools and the education offered has a direct impact on our entire community.”

Luis Collazo, Esther Colon, Nayib Hassan face off in Seat Five race For Seat Five: Luis Collazo said he decided to run for political office because as a committed member of this community, “I have proven my leadership through service.” “I have served as chairman of the town’s Elderly Affairs Committee and as president of the Celebration Point Condominium Association,” he said. “Public service is delivering on my commitment to continuing to serve my community. Serving on the Town Council would allow me to serve every resident and ensuring a better future for Miami Lakes.” If elected, Collazo said he would address issues such as traffic, smart development and growth, public safety, beautification, senior initiatives and efficient government. “I am committed to small and efficient government,” he said. “I will be a tireless champion for fiscal accountability and demanding more with less.” Collazo, who has raised $27,068, said residents told him they believe that more can be done in the areas of looming development, and especially, the impact traffic will bring to the town. He also said residents want to ensure that “our” first responders are adequately keeping up with increasing demands for service as “we grow.” Esther Colon, who has raised $9,941 for her campaign, said she’s running for political office because she made the conscious

decision to give back and serve the residents of Miami Lakes. “Our current financial position, grant acquisition, traffic congestion and infrastructure, needs to be analyzed and addressed,” she said. “My depth of experience, enthusiasm and resourcefulness will deliver innovative solutions to Miami Lakes to help it thrive over the next four years and beyond.” If elected, Colon said she would like to address issues such as citizen engagement and improved communication; improved financial transparency; budget reductions; and more services for Miami Lakes residents and not surrounding communities. She said residents are upset over the construction of town hall without their approval, traffic congestion and approval of more residential developments and charter changes that were not approved by the majority of residents. Colon said residents are seeking a change in communication improvement when a complaint is filed for tree and sidewalk problems with no response on safety issues; a permitting process with more customer service; and code enforcement to be more proactive in deteriorating neighborhoods with an anonymous system to avoid repercussion from neighbors. Colon said residents should vote for her because of her 32 years of experience in municipal and county government, including operations and management.

Nayib Hassan, who has raised $22,815, said he’s running for a Town Council Seat because as a Miami Lakes resident for over 19 years, he strongly believes in fiscal discipline and transparency in government. “Over the past few years, I have witnessed how the lack of resident involvement can lead to our government getting lost in the politics that can make us lose focus on what is best for Miami Lakes,” he said. If elected, Hassan said he would insist on transparency and professionalism in conducting all town business, and respect taxpayer dollars by avoiding the misspending of funds. “Work faster and more efficiently to relieve traffic jams in our town,” he said. “Increase recreational programs, in our parks, for our children. Ensure our public safety, and engage residents so we always have a voice in important decisions.” He said residents are divided; some are satisfied and others are not. “I am a firm believer that in order to maintain our quality of life and our unique town feel, any elected official needs to have an open door policy and an actual relationship with the residents that they represent. When this community commenced, there was a political activist group called Concerned Citizens of Miami Lakes, which helped bring about our local township. We need to go back to those days where elected officials and citizens were one.”

State of the Town foresees more citizen services By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Before Miami Lakes’ incorporation 16 years ago, resident Sean Schwinghammer said the community was mired in an uphill battle against Miami-Dade County’s plan to increase the height of a landfill west of 1-75. Schwinghammer, a member of the now defunct Miami Lakes Community Council, said the town didn’t stand a chance until his colleague, Michael Pizzi, took on a leadership role to stymie the expansion, which could have destroyed the community’s property values. “He pushed and pushed and we won,” said Schwinghammer, as he introduced Mayor Michael Pizzi

for his annual State of the Town Address. “Is he the hardest working man in town? Yes, and that’s why we elected him mayor.” Albeit Pizzi is a polarizing figure, his supporters and antagonists packed Miami Lakes Town Hall, where he recognized two financial institutions, educators and volunteers for their roles in the town’s affairs, and peppered his speech with celebration and promises to make 2017 a better year by setting the standards higher than previous years. Pizzi, who is facing a reelection battle this month with the town’s founding Mayor Wayne Slaton and current Councilmember Manny Cid, said his No. 1 goal is to reduce traffic congestion by five

percent on Ludlam Road and Miami Lakes Drive, and prevent the county and Hialeah from opening up N.W. 154 Street near a large scale residential development along N.W. 87 Avenue. Banking on an idea proposed by Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, Pizzi said the town needs to expedite building a bridge park on the N.W. 154 Street I-75 overpass.. “That would solve the problem,” he said. Pizzi said the town added two police officers in the new budget who were assigned to traffic control throughout the town during peak hours. The mayor said creating better regulations for the lakes is also a top priority for 2017. “The lakes are a precious commodity and the town will pass comprehensive legislation to protect and clean our lakes,” he said. Pizzi said during his two-terms as mayor, Miami Lakes built a stand alone government center, opened up N.W. 87 Avenue and reduced taxes. But he said 2017 is the year Miami Lakes tops those accomplishments. “If we planted 500 trees this year, I want to see 1,000 trees planted next year,” he said. “If we reduced the crime rate by five percent this year, I want to see it reduced by 10 percent next year. And as a council and community, we will make these goals happen this year.” Before his speech, Pizzi recognized Kislak Bank and Popular Community Bank, Miami Lakes Middle School principal Dr.

Manuel Sanchez III who was named 2015-16 Principal of the Year, Alejandro Sanchez as Volunteer Veteran of the Year, and Charles James, Volunteer of the Year. Giardino’s Gourmet Salads was honored as the Business of the Year which is presented annually

to a company that promotes economic growth and community involvement. Also honored was Jose Orellana who was named Employee of the Year. Orellana joined the Town in 2012 and now serves at the Green Space Maintenance Supervisor.

Ethics Commission honors MLMS’s Lisa Deyarza The Miami-Dade County Commission on Ethics and Public Trust paid tribute to Miami Lakes Middle School teacher Lisa Deyarza as the recipient of the 2016 Ethical Governance Day Award during a ceremony on October 25 that brought county and school officials to the Mock Courtroom that Deyarza envisioned and built using grants, donations and personal labor. In addition to opening the Mock Courtroom in 2014, Deyarza initiated a schoolwide annual Mock Trial Competition – the first for a middle school. The students play all roles in trials as they learn about the justice system. Among the many other accomplishments in her efforts to help her students become better citizens, Deyarza created the Legal Studies Magnet Program at Miami Lakes Middle a dozen years ago

and opened the Biliterate Program in Social Studies. The 2006 “Teacher of the Year” for her school has led her students to win multiple awards in civic competitions including “We The People,” “Model United Nations” and “Project Citizen.” Her students were state winners six years in a row in Project Citizen and also earned a Superior National Rating. Ethics Commission executive director Joseph Centorino presented a plaque to Deyarza, along with Miami-Dade District 13 County

Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., in front of other school officials, parents and students in her Legal Studies class. Referring to Deyarza as a “civic hero,” Centorino told the preteens, “It is with you, our future citizens, for which the success of our nation will depend, and what Deyarza does is so critical to your participation.” Miami-Dade Schools North District superintendent Jose Bueno added that the students are “being well-prepared to be the future,”

“what I like to do… what I love to do… is being recognized.” The award was part of the Ethics Commission’s 5th annual Ethical Governance Day. More than 200 civic activists spoke in government and economics classes in dozens of Miami-Dade senior high schools to share with students the importance of civic activism and ethics in government.

This charitable football competition is the continuation of a tradition started is 2007 by Douglas Austin, Pace alumni, Class of 1981 and Belen alumni Jorge Varela, both members of the Knights of Columbus Coral Gables Council. The game will be held on Friday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Pace High School Spartan Field in Miami Gardens.

FIU’s Anthony Wint named USA Defensive Player of Week Florida International University junior linebacker Anthony Wint was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week last month for his stellar performance against the Charlotte 49ers and helping his team stay undefeated in conference action. Wint, a Miami native, tied a career-high in tackles with 13 (seven solo) against the 49ers, as FIU won its third-straight to improve to 3-0 in Conference USA action. The native of Homestead notched his fifth double-digit tackles outing of the season.

Wint led an FIU defense that put the team in position to make a 13-point comeback in the waning moments of the fourth quarter as the Panthers scored two touchdowns in the final 4:30 for the one-point victory. Wint, 6-0, and 220 pounds, and the FIU defense held the 49ers on the final drive of the game to a missed 49-yard field goal to clinch the win. The win improved FIU to 3-0 in conference play for the first time in program history and gave the Panthers their first three-game winning streak since the 2011 season. Wint is currently fifth in the conference and 17th in the nation in tackles. The former Homestead High star has recorded 72 total tackles this season – second on the team – and is 15 tackles shy of breaking into the top 10 all-time in the FIU record books.

The Cubs drafted the Hialeah native in the first round in 2012, and he made his Major League Baseball debut this year, when Jorge Soler was placed on the disabled list. He made his first career start in left field on June 8 against the Philadelphia Phillies, and on his first fielding opportunity threw out a runner at home to complete a double play. FIU’s swimming and diving teams win conference honors The FIU swimming and diving team swept Conference USA weekly honors last month, when Kyna Pereira and Rebecca Quesnel were named the C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the league announced. Both Pereira and Quesnel helped FIU to a perfect 3-0 mark during the Dual-A-Palooza in Houston, Texas. The Panthers topped Tulane, 142-82, defeated C-USA foe Rice, 104-98, and downed Denver, 119.50-85.50, for the weekend sweep. Pereira had a dominant weekend with six individual first-place finishes and anchored a relay team that placed first in the 400 Free. The honor marks the fifth of Pereira's FIU career. Quesnel picked up two firstplace finishes in Houston. The native of Burlington, Ontario, scored a 276.25 in the 3-meter program as FIU swept the top three spots in the Panthers' 142-82 win over Tulane. Quesnel finished third in the 1-meter program versus Rice as FIU used the 16 diving points to propel past the Owls, 104-98. The third-year Panther finished the day with her second top finish, scoring a 273.95 in the 3-meter as FIU defeated Denver, 119.50-85.50. The 276.25 score during Friday's action was the

students, faculty and administrators from local schools. He began by listing the many accomplishments of the county over the last handful of years, noting specifically how 79,000 English Language Learners (ELL) outperformed the rest of the country in a number of rankings, how the county has the highest number of academies of distinctions, the improvements made and that continue as a result of the General Obligation Bond which received 70 percent endorsement from voters and the focus on digital convergence for learning tailored to the 21st century. Promethean boards were installed in every classroom in the county over one summer, and Carvalho expects that by 2019 every student will have a schoolassigned tablet for assignments. Additionally, the graduation rate has soared to 80 percent, and by 2019 that number is expected to grow to 90 percent. Carvalho continued to name successes, all committed to memory, while parents and administrators nodded in agreement. Following Carvalho’s talk the floor was open for any audience member to ask questions or make comments about the school system, which quickly leaned heavily on the side of parents with special needs children who feel marginalized. “To get to you is awful,” said one parent about trying to contact the superintendent, while the crowd roared with laughter. Parents questioned the underfunded special needs programs at schools that reduced staff, and the efficiency of therapy provided on

Pace’s Nelson Bonet wins Cervantes Educator honor By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School theology teacher Nelson Bonet received the 2016 Cervantes Educator of the Year Award at a ceremony at Nova Southeastern University on October 25. The award comes after Bonet was chosen as Pace’s Teacher of the Year back in August.

Bonet has taught theology at Pace for nearly a decade, but his contribution to the school goes even further than in the classroom. For the past several years, Bonet has led the Tons of Love food drive, where thousands of pounds of food are donated by Pace students, faculty, family, and the Pace community at large to benefit the hungry both locally and abroad.

This year’s drive, which is still ongoing, has collected over a ton of food, with most of it going towards the Hurricane Matthew relief effort in Haiti.

In addition to the food drive, Bonet moderates the Respect Life Club and the Pace Mission Club, which regularly works with Feeding South Florida to provide food for hungry locals. He is also responsible for moderating and organizing Koinonia and Antioch, the Pace freshmen and sophomore retreats.

“I am humbled by receiving such a prestigious award,” said Bonet. “I would like to thank God and my family for supporting me to live out and teach about my faith. I would also like to thank my principal, the administration and my colleagues for being part of this award that has been bestowed on me.”

support plan was created to identify students with attendance problems using intervention points and initiating systems for in-depth monitoring and analysis of student absences, then implementing a system that adds communication with parents and increased home visits, and a more comprehensive system to provide referrals to outside agencies for both students and parents. Overall, the data from the targeted schools indicates that the percentage of students with 30+ absences decreased from 15 percent in school year 2014-2015 to 8 percent in school year 2015-2016. Additionally, the daily attendance rate in the targeted schools revealed an overall increase from 91.09 percent to 92.80 percent. “After a year of implementation, Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ iAttend initiative is yielding remarkable results,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “The data collected over the past year reveals that the percentage of student absences has been virtually cut in half from school year to school year. This critical data point demonstrates the depth and impact of the iAttend initiative and support programs that encourage regular school attendance.”

Pace High’s Lilian Dubon honored with Outstanding Educator Award By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Lilian Dubon, the Dean of Faculty for Pace High School, was selected for the University of Chicago’s prestigious Outstanding Educator Award. The award, which has existed for over 30 years, highlights educators who have made a tremendous positive impact in their students’ lives and led them towards the path of education, both inside and outside the classroom. Winners of the award are chosen from nominees submitted by first-year University of Chicago students. Freshmen write letters about an educator who has changed their lives and helped them grow academically and personally. Dubon was nominated for the award by Daniel Labrousse, a

Class of 2016 Pace alumni who was a star student at Pace and now attends the University of Chicago after receiving the full tuition fouryear QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship. “When I received the opportunity to honor one of my educators,” said Labrousse, “I chose Mrs. Dubon because I acknowledged that many of the things I was able to accomplish were because of her.” Before becoming Dean of Faculty this school year, Dubon was the college advisor for Pace, helping students with their college and scholarship applications and ensuring they were prepared for higher education. She also worked as a guidance counselor for students, listening to their problems and helping them with both academic and personal issues.

Dolphins host Hometown Huddle at Bob Graham Education Center The Miami Dolphins brought a little football, a little music, a little dancing, and a whole lot of fun to their Hometown Huddle event Tuesday, October 18 at Bob Graham Education Center. October is National Bullying Prevention month and along with representatives from PACER.org, the Dolphins helped students learn how to stop and report a bully. Former Dolphin players Troy Drayton and Lousaka Polite spoke to the students and ran them through drills at the Jr. Dolphin training camp. Current Dolphin cheerleaders taught groups of students a dance routine. In the school cafeteria, former Dolphin and University of Miami player, Twan Russell and the Dolphins mascot, T.D. had students dancing and cheering while delivering the Dol-Fit message which focused on education, nutrition and making correct choices.
