The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes mayoral race is headed for a run-off, two incumbents kept their seats and the town’s council will see a new face, as local residents cast their ballots during perhaps the most polarizing presidential election when America chose Donald Trump as its next president-elect. Councilmember Manny Cid picked up 45 percent of the vote (6,436), while incumbent Mayor Michael Pizzi got 31 percent (4,425). Miami Lakes’ first mayor, Wayne Slaton, finished with 23 percent (3,258). Since neither candidate collected 50 percent plus 1 of the vote, the two top vote-getters will face

Voting information for Miami Lakes Mayoral Runoff Election The Miami Lakes mayoral runoff election has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 29. Early voting will be available on Saturday, November 19, and Sunday, November 20, at Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. On runoff election day, the following Miami Lakes precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Pct. 305 – Miami Lakes Branch Library, 6699 Windmill Gate Road Pct. 306 – Miami Lakes Middle School, 6425 Miami Lakeway North Pct. 307 – Miami Lakes United Methodist Church, 14800 Ludlam Road Pct. 308 – Miami Lakes K-8 Center, 14250 N.W. 67 Avenue Pct. 352 – Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue Pct. 385 – Barbara Goleman Senior High School, 14100 N.W. 89 Avenue Pct. 390 – Bob Graham Education Center, 15901 N.W. 79 Avenue

off in a run-off election on Tuesday, November 29, pitting two neighbors at Villa Vizcaya against each other for the town’s top executive position. Early voting for the mayoral’s run off election is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20, at the Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 Montrose Road. Cid, 33, thanked his supporters and asked them to back him again in the run-off election. “We won round one and now we must get ready for round two which is the runoff on November 29,” said Cid, a co-owner of an adult daycare facility. “The results made it clear that it’s time for new leadership, and we must work hard and have the energy to make sure

we prevail in the run off.” Pizzi, 53, garnered 31 percent of the vote despite his $2.5 million lawsuit against the town, seeking his attorneys’ fee for successfully defending him during his federal corruption trial in 2014. Pizzi, who won reelection in 2012 with 68 percent of the vote, campaigned on a platform of reducing taxes, reducing traffic by opening N.W. 87 Avenue and building the youth center for children and kids with special needs. But his initiatives weren’t enough to convince the voters, and the run off keeps the attorney and Cid on the campaign trial for two more weeks. The election was a bitter loss for Slaton, who was forced to

Rodriguez, Lama, Collazo elected to Council seats (Continued from Page 1) relinquish the mayoral seat he won in a special election when the courts reinstated Pizzi as mayor in 2015. Slaton, a 65-year-old electrician, and Pizzi have been foes since incorporation. “It has been an honor to run for Mayor of Miami Lakes,” Slaton said in an email to The Miami Laker. “I want to thank my team, volunteers and supporters for all their hard work over the past few months right through the final election day. Thank you for sharing my vision of how our town should be led, and the importance of integrity and character, and never compromising the very highest standards upon which our town was built. “This runoff election is very important to me, and it should be to all our residents. Both candidates want the best for our community, yet have different governing styles. Whether you like one style or the other, the one thing that is of the utmost importance is selecting the candidate that has most consistently demonstrated both integrity and character” Slaton went on to say, “Manny Cid came to me following election day and thanked me and my volunteers for running a good campaign, and asked for my vote in the runoff election. That demonstrates character. I will be voting for Manny Cid to be the next Mayor of the Town of Miami Lakes.” On social media, Cid posted, “I am honored to have the support of my friend Wayne Slaton, Miami Lakes’ founding Mayor and a true public servant who is always com-

mitted to our Town. Wayne, Margaret and Grace are great Miami Lakers and I look forward to working with them for Miami Lakes future. I am humbled to have earned his trust in my candidacy to represent the people of Miami Lakes as Mayor.” For Seat Three, incumbent Tony Lama, a software engineer, defeated attorney Elizabeth Delgado with 60 percent of the vote (7,682) to her 39 percent (4,929). Lama, 38, said his family and supporters were the backbone of his campaign, and he urged residents to vote for Cid as the town’s mayor in the run-off. “I’m so blessed and grateful for the incredible support,” he said. “I couldn't have done this without the support of my very patient wife, my kids, my friends, and the voters of Miami Lakes. Now it's time to get back to work and crush 2016 for my wonderful company Aspect and get back to work for the people of Miami Lakes. We have a runoff in the next few weeks and there is no other option for the future of Miami Lakes than Manny Cid.” Lama was first elected in 2012. He was responsible for the town’s mobile app, which allows residents to access government services from their computer or cell phones, and was one of several councilmembers who organized the town’s first traffic summit with Miami-Dade and FDOT to resolve Miami Lakes’ long-running gridlock plight. During his second term, Lama said he’s pushing for implementation of a new synchronized light-

ing system to improve traffic flow and resume working with MiamiDade Expressway Authority to create new exit points on N.W. 67 Avenue and the Gratigny Expressway. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, a 47-year-old Coral Gables firefighter, held on to his Seat One, defeating Xiomara Pazos, a 59year-old owner of a non-emergency transportation company, and attorney Alex Dehghani, 36, in a three person race that saw the candidates campaign day and night during early voting. Rodriguez collected 58 percent of the vote (7,291), Pazos mustered 27 percent (3,436) and 1,792 residents (14 percent) voted for Dehghani. Rodriguez, who organized the traffic summit with Lama, said he’s ready to resume his work and complete the town’s goals for the next four years. “Thank you to all my supporters, tonight was a good night,” Rodriguez said. “Clean and honest campaigning will always win.” Rodriguez also extended his gratitude to Lama for his support. “Thank you my friend Tony Lama and your family,” he said. Although she lost, Pazos said she was overwhelmed over the support she got during the election. “I am immensely grateful to the residents and loyal supporters who so generously contributed their time and effort to my campaign during this very long election season,” she said. “I am deeply moved by the expression of confidence from the Town of Miami

Lakes, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Luiz Collazo, former chair of the Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee, is the new face on the town’s council, winning Seat Five, which Cid gave up to run for mayor, despite a recent campaign mailer that painted Collazo as an abuser of senior citizens. Collazo, a 42-year-old health care administrator, collected 51 percent of the vote (6,602), while Esther Colon, a 62-year-old retired government administrator, mustered 24 percent (3,181), and 38year-old attorney Nayib Hassan got 2,986 votes (23 percent). Collazo, Rodriguez and Lama campaigned together offering residents the “Three Amigos” who would work for them and protect their tax dollars. Collazo campaigned on his community service experience such as working with the elderly and as a former president of the Celebration Point Homeowners Association, that earned him accolades that included a Volunteer of the Year award and a Key to the Town award. “I thank the residents for all of their support,” he said. “We did it!” The longtime Miami Lakes resident said he’s pushing for new

exit points to alleviate traffic congestion, and advocate for a new advanced life support transport to reduce response times during emergencies. Hassan said he will continue to stay involved in the town. “For the people who supported me, I say we must look forward to the future of our town and maintain the culture we have treasured for so many years,” Hassan said. “We need to support our current and new council with energy and positivity.” Colon was also gracious in defeat and her supporters urged her to stay involved in the town’s affairs and run again in 2018. “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the new council and wish them success as they continue to navigate the Miami Lakes waters,” Colon said. “It was a pleasure meeting the many residents who make up our beautiful community on this journey, and I will cherish the many new friends I met along the way.” The swearing-in ceremony for Councilmembers Lama, Rodriguez, Collazo and the mayoral winner will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, in Town Hall Chambers prior to the regular December Council meeting.

This December, Main Street Players at 6766 Main Street will present their first Spanish language play, “La Pasión según Antígona Pérez” by Luís Rafael Sánchez. The talented cast of ten is currently in rehearsal and is excited to bring this production to life. Held captive in the palace of Generalísimo Creón Molina, Antigona Pérez is a political prisoner awaiting execution. She stole and buried the irons of two friends who attempted to assassinate Creón, and consents to her sentence by refusing to disclose their location. During her stay in the dungeon, visitors come to test her values, and she’s strongly criticized by the press in charge of misrepresenting the truth. The production brings this classic story of civil disobedience to modern day. Through this story, values are corrupted, fear controls

decisions, and it takes courage to remain loyal to our beliefs. The show is directed by Isaac Polanco, and will be stage managed by Daniel Nieves. The cast includes Antígona by Anne Garcia, Aurora by Adela Romero, Creón Molína by Alejandro Milían, Pilar by Salomé Muriel, Monsenor Escudero by Amarú Pereyra, Irene, Journalist 5 by Carmen Albernas, Journalist 1 by Camila Rodriguez, Journalist 2 by Rosalyn Tavarez, Journalist 3 by Henri Sosa, and Journalist 4 by Leopoldo Anzola. Performance dates are December 9-11, and December 16-18. Fridays and Saturdays are at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $20, and may either be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to showtime, or online at www.mainstreetplayers.com.

Summary of actions taken by Miami Lakes Town Council at its November 1 meeting The following actions were taken by the Miami Lakes Town Council during its regular meeting on November 1: • Council members approved a resolution to authorize the town manager to execute a contract with Alberni Caballero and Fieman for independent auditing services in an amount not to exceed budgeted funds. The company’s proposal for the town’s annual audit for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2016 is $42,000. The initial term of the agreement is three years with the option for the town manager to renew the contract for two additional one-year periods. • Council members approved the execution of a permit application and a construction agreement with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) to install and maintain an entrance feature on MDX owned-right-of-way. The Beautification Master Plan identifies N.W. 67 Avenue and N.W. 138 Street as one of the main gateways in to the town where an entrance feature should be built. • Lawmakers approved a resolution to revise the 2015-2016 end-of-year budget resolution adopting the proposed modifications for the general fund, special revenue fund, capital projects fund and storm water utility fund. The general fund is projected to generate a carry forward amount

of $1.7 million and the building department will have a carry forward amount of $403,000. The general fund carry-forward includes $210,000 in projects that were not completed within the fiscal year and will be re-programmed for 2016-17. The available carry-toward is reduced to $907,000 of which $600,000 was anticipated in the budget to be available as a litigation/settlement reserve, and the remaining $307,000 will go to a general fund contingency to cover any final fiscal 2015-16 invoices and audit adjustments, if required. For revenues, the general fund projected a net increase in revenue of $368,000, mostly as a result of building permit revenues. • Council members rejected Mayor Michael Pizzi’s proposal to allow parking on the swale areas in front of homes for immediate family members only who are experiencing hardship and forced to move into their parents or children’s home. • Pizzi’s proposal to put out an RFO for town legal services failed when none of his colleagues seconded his motion. • Council members tabled Pizzi’s proposal to consider a mechanism under limited circumstances for aggrieved residents to be able to appeal zoning board or special master decisions to the Town Council.

R&L Schuck CPAs, LLC, a certified public accounting firm offering accounting and tax services to businesses and individuals, recently announced plans to move its office from the Lake Katharine Shopping Center to Main Street in late October. The new office will be a short distance away from its current location. According to Rafael J. Schuck, managing partner and longtime Miami Lakes resident, the move was necessary to secure a long term location to allow for focus on client service. “Our new office space is larger than our previous offices and offers a more efficient layout. It will support our ability to grow and expand and will provide a better work environment for current and future staff. I think it underscores our commitment to both our clients and our employees, said Schuck.

“We were fortunate to find such a nice space so close to our current office. We really wanted to limit the impact the relocation could have on our clients and employees, said Leonor E. Schuck, the firm’s administrative partner. “I don’t think we could have found a better location. The new location will help us continue to grow and evolve to keep pace with our client’s needs, allowing us to provide exceptional value and superior service along the way. She added “Main Street is the centerpiece of Miami Lakes Town Center. As a local business owned and staffed by local residents, it can’t get any better than that. R&L Schuck CPAs new address is 6710 Main Street, Suite 233. The company’s main phone number will remain the same, 305-362-1040, as will all email addresses.

Medical spa ‘Essence of You’ opens in M. Lakes

MARLENE VALLADARES

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Sweet aromas, calming music and a smile from Marlene Valladares all welcome clients who visit the new Essence of You MedSpa. The state-of-the-art medical spa located in the Lake Katharine Shopping Center, 6155 Miami Lakes Dr., is just minutes from South Florida’s major thoroughfares. The medspa, which is a cross between a spa boutique and an outpatient medical center, offers a relaxing atmosphere for clients to receive innovative treatments in the field of aesthetic medicine while enjoying stylish amenities. Valladares and her husband, Ray Arce, opened Essence of You in late September. After living in the small, tight-knit community of Surfside, Valladares and Arce were searching for a similar hometown feel for their first location when they discovered Miami Lakes. “Miami Lakes was the only thing that reminded us of Surfside,” said Valladares. “We were looking for a nice community that had a good business foundation to it. We are hoping to move our family to Miami Lakes in the near future.” The couple met when Valladares was a pharmaceutical representative and trying to sell to Arce who was working at the University of Miami at the time. They both worked in the diabetic field. After marriage and three children the couple decided to embark on a business venture. Arce, board certified practitioner, is the primary practitioner at the medspa and specializes in

advanced aesthetic techniques including injectables such as Botox, dermal fillers, mesotherapy and platelet-rich plasma. The medspa also offers industry-leading laser and light based services that address a multitude of skin conditions, permanent hair reduction, and skin rejuvenation. “We pride ourselves on providing the safest, most effective aesthetic services in town with class and professionalism,” said Arce. Arce is certified and licensed in all the procedures offered at the medspa. “I’ve been told by clients that they never expected that a man so big could have such soft hands. But I say to them he’s been working with needles for over 25 years,” said Valladares. “To him this is second nature. With time and experience he’s learned how to position things so they don’t hurt people as much. Ultimately what he does is an art form.” Artistry both in medical aesthetics and with paintbrushes, Arce painted all the artwork in his the office which gives clients something interesting and relaxing to focus on while they wait for their procedures. A perfectionist in all aspects, Arce takes his responsibility in helping clients feel great about themselves. “He books an hour time slot for each person because he tries to cater to their needs and answer all their questions to make them comfortable,” said Valladares. “Somet imes people are scared or nervous to have something done, to improve scars or wrinkles, but all these products are FDA approved,

they are safe and you just want to make sure you have them in the hands of the right person, people that have been certified, licensed and have the experience.” One such procedure, the Lumenis multi-platform system used at the medspa, is safe for all skin types and features Intense Pulsed Light, ResurFX and Nd:Yag components. Additionally the spa offers skin care products by Dr. Obagi’s ZO line. The ZO products address conditions including, but not limited to, skin protection, hydration, rejuvenation, and scarring. Dr. Obagi is one of the skin care industry’s preeminent authorities. “We can help people feel good about themselves,” said Valladares. “We are all living longer but aging faster. We give our body so much wear and tear that this is a small way to slow down that aging process a little and help the outside reflect how young and healthy we feel and are on the inside.” Some of the services offered include platelet rich plasma and micro needling, a more natural alternative to Botox which encourages the body to produce its own collagen and elasticity with results that can last two to three years as opposed to Botox which is about two to three months. Additionally clients can get treatments for skin resurfacing, vascular lesions, varicose veins, acne scars, rosacea, skin toning, nevus, permanent hair reduction, and injectibles such as dermal fillers, and more. To book an appointment call 786-703-1145. Hours and days are flexible for appointment times.

Town trees in good shape based on UF inspection No imminent problems, diseases or pests pose a threat to the trees planted in Miami Lakes, and less than one percent of trees are dying which is well below the average mortality rate in an urban setting, according to Dr. Jason Smith, an associate professor at the University of Florida’s School of Forest Resource and Conservation. Smith delivered his assessment of the conditions of the town’s

trees during a recent meeting at Town Hall, where several council members, Town Manager Alex Rey, Miami Lakes’ Chief of Operations Tony Lopez, Town arborist/field inspector Steve Poulson, and Greenspace maintenance supervisor Jose Orellana were on hand for his presentation. Smith said it is essential to choose proper trees for specific areas as some trees are weakened and stressed because they do not

have ample room to grow. He believes it is a good practice to diversify trees species in the town. “In doing so, if a disease affects one kind of tree, it will not damage other species,” he said. Smith also suggested utilizing the inventory of tree records in the town to monitor tree health over time, and to inform the community of the impact certain fertilizers have on trees so that they are

avoided in homeowner’s swale areas. The meeting stemmed from Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez’s request for an onsite visit by Smith and the University of Florida’s School of Forest Resource and Conservation to get a true assessment of the condition of the town’s sick oak trees. Rodriguez said the university’s

recent report on the trees’ health was based on pictures the town provided to him to make his assessment, but they can be adequately assessed by a physical visit. Miami Lakes has launched its Black Olive tree removal and replacement program and budgeted $28,807 this year to continue funding the program.

Joyce Haddad opens wellness center ‘Keep it in the Heart’ By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Joyce Haddad, owner of the holistic wellness center, Keep it in the Heart, recently opened her doors at 8100 Oak Lane, Suite 405, in Miami Lakes Business Park West. The center is a hub for healing through various modalities using organic, food-grade herbal remedies for a variety of physical, spiritual, and emotional ailments. Haddad, who was born in Venezuela but raised in the U.S. by an Italian mother and Middle Eastern father, first began research into alternative medicine 13 years ago when her father was diagnosed with lymphoma. Haddad learned about different facets for healing which included types of acupuncture, yoga, massage, reiki, energy, crystals, sounds, essential oils, teas, tinctures and more. After earning her bachelor’s degree in

psychology with a minor in religion, Haddad opted to continue her studies and earned several certifications in energy healing modalities. She realized that she herself was also ill with the stress of living an inauthentic life. She sought to correct that by making life changes and trying to stay loyal to her heart’s desires and hopes. Today, Haddad is a Life Therapist in Spiritual Psychology. “Once you’re loyal to yourself, then everything flows with grace,” said Haddad. “Keep it in the Heart is a culmination of my life’s passion and work in helping people discover their true, higher selves and achieve balance, peace, and joy.” In addition to modalities offered for healing at the center, Keep it in the Heart offers items for sale which include Haddad’s

Com. Barbara Jordan hosts Small Business forum Miami-Dade County Comissioner Barbara Jordan’s Small Business Lending Workshop drew 60 people – local business owners learning about participating in county contracts, and becoming county registered vendors. The workshop, which was cosponsored by the Small Business Development Division , was held on November 3 at Florida Memorial University. “It’s vital to help small businesses, especially the ones getting back on their feet after the economic downturn years ago,” Jordan said. “This workshop gives businesses the tools to grow and

become more successful.” Presenters discussed the importance of personal and business credit scores, how to secure bank loans, micro-lending, the certification process, and a host of other topics. They also answered questions from small business owners in the audience. Brittney Easterling, 29, who has owned her landscaping business in Miami-Dade County for a year, said she will apply the information she learned to her business. “The information that was presented was easy to understand and valuable.” Easterling said. “I would continue to come to these workshops no matter how much I

learn.” Representatives from the following organizations participated in the workshop: Miami-Dade County Human Resources, Jackson Health, SBDC, Florida Community Bank, City National Bank, BankUnited, Popular Community Bank, Our Micro Lending, Trust Funding Solutions, Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, Atlantic Insurance Brokerage, FSB Agency Inc., and Credit 360.F. Mater Academy continues to win in regional playoffs Mater Academy’s football team closed out the regular season with a 42-0 victory against Hialeah Miami Lakes, as the Lions won nine straight games and headed to the playoffs against Broward’s Cooper City. The Lions were able to hold off a late surge by Cooper City in last week’s regional quarterfinal to win 35-21. During the last week of October, North Miami Beach High snapped American’s streak of five consecutive district titles with a 14-6 victory, as the Chargers won the 13-8A championship for the first time since 2010. NMB’s defense stopped the Patriots inside the 10-yard line with 4:37 left in the game. The Chargers’ defense sacked quarterback Wanya Williams on fourth down, turning the ball over

on downs. On a third down play, the Patriots sacked quarterback Wendall Morrison on the Chargers’ own 10-yard line to get the ball back and in a good field position, but a penalty was called and NMB got a fresh set of downs to end the game. NMB hosted Coral Gables in the first round of the playoffs last week which the Cavaliers won in a running clock blowout 47-12. American lost its quarterfinal match against a powerful passing attack by Columbus - 33-16. Columbus and Coral Gables square off this week in the next round of playoffs. In other high school football action, Monsignor Pace defeated Keys Gate 16-6, and then lost to Belen Jesuit last week in the annual Turkey Bowl 13-7.

Bob Graham Education Center’s girls soccer team opens second year

BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER had an official girls' soccer team participate in the official 2016 Soccer Season as part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Sanctioned Sports for the second consecutive year. This group of girls have practiced diligently, however their goal was to have fun while doing so. No matter the outcome of the games, players enjoyed their cheers of victories and emotional defeats. At the end, success was measured not by the wins or losses, but by the friends and moments shared with the ones around them and the lessons that were a result of the effort, commitment and dedication.

Lisa Garcia ‘comes home’ as new HML principal

HML PRINCIPAL LISA GARCIA

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High’s new principal is hardly a stranger to the school. Lisa Garcia, newly appointed principal of HML got her start in administration at the school in 2007 as an assistant principal, a position she held until 2013 when she was promoted to principal at Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School. Her return to HML feels like coming home. “I was so happy to come back,” said Garcia. “One of the great things about this school is that a large portion of the faculty here are also alumni. Regardless of the administration, that unfortunately in our school system comes and goes, the faculty are the true backbone of a school. They’re committed and I was happy to see that some of the students that graduated while I was assistant principal are back in these halls as teachers.” Garcia has been a lifelong native of the area, born in Mount Sinai Hospital and raised in Hialeah. She attended Immaculate Conception and Monsignor Pace before earning her bachelor’s degree in Special Education and a specialist certificate in Educational Leadership. She married her high school sweetheart, Alex Garcia, and had her son, Jordan, whom she had planned would attend HML before she was promoted. She began her teaching career as a middle school science teacher at Palm Springs Middle School and then as Positive Behavior Support coach at Carol City High School. Garcia says that her vision and goal for her time at the school centers on showing people the real

HML. The school offers four magnet programs and is expanding its dual enrollment course offerings in partnership with Florida International University. Unlike most dual enrollment programs, at HML faculty is hired and trained specifically to teach dual enrollment courses for college credit so students never have to leave campus. They get the best of both worlds – enjoying high school, and earning credit for their college degree. “I want our community to see HML for what it is,” said Garcia. “This school has something for every child, regardless of interest or ability. Our students never have to leave campus to accomplish earning their associate’s degree through dual enrollment and advanced placement courses.” In addition to the school’s achievements and programs already in place, Garcia will lead the school during a period of construction with the addition of a court room for the school’s Legal Studies Magnet. The future court room will stand adjacent to the legal studies classroom and will be used for Model United Nations

presentations, We The People, and for teen court, which is where students that have committed small offenses in school are offered an opportunity to present their case with the help of an assigned student representative. This court room and the legal studies magnet has been supported by the partnership between the school and the Hialeah-based law firm, Patino Law Firm. “The Patino Law Firm has been extremely essential,” said Garcia. “They have created a bridge for us to the City of Hialeah Justice System and have coordinated meetings to allow students watch cases inside real courtrooms.” As for returning to her home school, Garcia is elated, and one of many to return. “It’s not very common that people have such an amazing experience at a high school that they keep coming back,” said Garcia of the large amount of alumni turned faculty at her school. “When I returned to HML I found the same great kids, the same great staff, and the same incredible work ethic that existed here before.”

Mater Academy’s cross country team

Saud added that the

MLEC hosts mock senatorial, presidential debates By Jennifer Perez Special to The Miami Laker Students at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) have proved once again that millennials are not the uninformed, apathetic generation people make them out to be. The Harbinger and Junior State of America (JSA) hosted a mock presidential debate and a mock senatorial debate four days before Election Day and the student audience was more than interested. They were involved. Gathering in the school’s auditorium, students watched and listened attentively as Carolina Espinal, a senior in the journalism strand of the Cambridge Academy who was the moderator for the debates, introduced the candidates and listed the rules. Beforehand, a coin toss was used to determine who would go first and the senatorial debate began. Dru Barcelo represented Senator Marco Rubio (R) and Christopher Justiniano represented Congressman Patrick Murphy (D). The two candidates began with their opening statements before discussing their endorsements for the presidential candidates from their respective parties. Questions regarding climate change, gun control, abortion, and education followed as Barcelo and Justiniano answered as the candidates they represented would. Students used Twitter to ask questions using #MLECDebates and Daniela Morales, manning the live Twitter desk, relayed their questions.

The

“God willing, I will commit to a six year term,” said Rubio during his closing statement before criticizing his opponent for his lack of experience. “I’m here to become a Senator. I am not here to be a CPA,” Murphy countered in his own closing statement. The two shook hands and walked off the stage and then it was time for the presidential debate. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was represented by Cesar Zafra and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was represented by Emily Norat. After the opening statements, the moderator asked questions about gun control, anti-ISIS policies, immigration, national security, and LGBT rights, giving each candidate two minutes to respond. In between, questions from Twitter and from the audience were answered. Popular lines from each candidate included Clinton’s “I’m sure his shirt and tie were not made in America,” while discussing outsourcing jobs and Trump’s “I’m not trying to make Trump great again, I’m trying to make America great again,” when asked how he felt about losing support from several Republican leaders. Both candidates finished with closing statements and some students voiced their opinion on the 2016 elections and the mock debate. “It gave me a broader idea of what Clinton and Trump really

stand for and what they are willing to do for the country,” said Dominique Gras, a senior at MLEC. “I was very confused about what Murphy and Rubio stood for and this cleared the air for me.” Students also shared what they wished to have seen in the actual presidential debates. “I liked that there was peace between Clinton and Trump in the mock debate. I feel that they are very immature in the actual debates. There’s a lot of hostility between the two. It would be nice to see more peace between the two of them,” said Gras. “I would love to hear them talk about Common Core and teachers and about mental health reform and how it ties into the Second Amendment,” added Tatiana Arevalo, another student at MLEC. Those who volunteered to represent the views of the presidential and senatorial candidates did so because they saw the importance of informing the public: “It’s important to inform the public because students like myself need to know about what the future can be like because of our own voices,” said Norat. All the mock debaters shared that they looked at each party’s platform and their candidates websites to learn about their stances

NBC6 journalist Stephanie Bertini visits MLEC’s Harbinger newsroom By Sabine Joseph Special to The Miami Laker In late October, Stephanie Bertini, a broadcast journalist currently employed at NBC 6 News, walked into the journalism classroom at Miami Lakes Educational Center prepared with an audiovisual resume and powerpoint, ready to impart her knowledge on the future generation of journalists. Bertini began with a video that compiled her 10 year broadcast career to show her transition in journalism, beginning with local stories in Canada and progressing to more cutting edge stories in the larger and more competitive Miami market. To show how she made her way to where she is now, she also showed her powerpoint presentation entitled “Dream and Reach: My Journey in Television News.” She stressed the fact that broadcast journalism is about helping others and not oneself. It’s about going out and telling people’s stories, informing the public, and reporting the facts: “If you have selfish goals, this is not a business for you,” she said. Bertini advised the class to follow her personal motto of dreaming and reaching – thinking about where you want to be in the future and taking the steps to get there: “Move toward that finish line even if you can’t see the end.” A career in journalism can be demanding and uncertain; Bertini mentioned younger journalists who have complained about having to pull up their roots and con-

stantly move, as well as how much pressure they are put under at work but she encourages the career path for those who have a genuine passion for the art. “That passion is something we can’t really talk about too much because it comes from inside,” she said. It was because of her passion for journalism that Bertini found her niche as a broadcast journalist, covering an array of stories, some of which have been incredibly emotionally impacting for her. The most impacting story that she covered was about children who lived in poverty. Because Bertini had been covering stories for a while, she didn’t expect to be so heavily impacted, however, an interview with a young girl left her deeply touched. The presentation turned incredibly interesting with impromptu broadcast scenario – the class was

startled when Bertini instructed them to take out their phones and quickly rattled off her number as well as her twitter handle. She told the class to tweet or text her photos and quotes of her visit to explain how fast-paced broadcast journalism is. “You don’t really know when you start the day what you’ll be dealing with,” she said. The importance of versatility and professional presence was also stressed. She told the class to network, try to get as many internships as possible, and to create a positive social media presence as soon as possible. “If you want to do this at the high school level, you’re already in the game,” she concluded.
