MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA

Legislature adds $3 million in budget for Miami Lakes projects The Town of Miami Lakes was among the big winners in the state’s new $83 billion budget, as the Florida Legislature earmarked $3 million to fund projects for traffic congestion, canal stabilization, and an analysis for reforms on blasting which has caused damages to residents’ homes and properties. State Senator Rene Garcia and State Representatives Manny Diaz Jr. and Jose Oliva secured the multi million dollar funding after Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid, Vice Mayor Tony Lama, and Councilmem-

bers Ceasar Mestre, Tim Daubert, Nelson Rodriguez, Luis Collazo and Frank Mingo lobbied the state’s top lawmakers during a visit to Tallahassee during the Legislative Session. “We got to work together with the mayor and council to focus on the issues we have seen firsthand in Miami Lakes,” said Diaz. “Overall, Miami Lakes won big because we worked together.” Garcia said, “We fulfilled our promises to the community this season because we worked as a team. I am very proud to stand

Local legislators successful in securing state grants for M. Lakes (Continued from Page 1) canal space for many homeowners. Lama praised Diaz for looking out for the town during the most busiest and, at times, hostile moments during the Legislature Session. “Miami Lakes has a solid partner in Manny Diaz Jr.,” Lama said. “He knows our community and the needs of his Miami Lakes constituency and I am thankful to work with him.” Collazo echoed similar sentiments. “Representative Diaz has been a tireless advocate for our community,” he said. “His efforts have secured well over $2 million dollars in funding for

Miami Lakes and an independent study to research the impact of blasting from the rock miners.” For years, traffic congestion and finding solutions to reduce gridlock have been at the forefront and $1 million to build for a ramp might be part of the solution. The Town is proposing an N.W. 87th Avenue ramp to Miami-Dade Expressway’s State Road 924 extension west to the Homestead Extension of the Florida Turnpike Project. The funding will be used to design and construct the access ramp improvement to be included in the Extension project that could improve regional connectivity and transportation infrastructure. Another long-running problem for residents is blasting by the rock mining industry. The $325,000 funds a comprehensive study of rock mining blasting and review of the claims process for damages. The study was a priority for Florida’s outgoing CFO Jeff Atwater and Garcia, Diaz and Mingo, who locally sponsored legislation in support of the analysis. “We’re thankful that

Representative Oliva, Diaz and Senator Garcia worked with Mayor Cid and our Town Council to achieve tremendous results for the town,” Mingo said. Added Rodriguez: “It’s a privilege to work with our state representatives and our state senator to obtain the funds needed to continue our canal projects and to start improving traffic in Miami Lakes with the 87th Avenue/1-75 project.” Cid said the funding goes a long way to assist the town in resolving some major issues. “The Miami Lakes Legislative Delegation has worked hard to bring funding for vital infrastructure projects,” said Cid. “The completion of our canal stabilization project will preserve tens of millions of dollars of properties and the 87th Avenue-I-75 interchange is a game changer for traffic relief in our town.” Mestre said the best results stem from the state and town brain trust working together. “It’s really advantageous for our residents when all elected officials work together as a team and we can get these great results,” he said.

BGEC civic students place in top three for district Project Citizen Bob Graham Education Center’s seventh grade law studies class was selected as one of the top three schools in the District’s Project Citizen Competition. Project Citizen is a program that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. The BGEC project went on to the Capitol Showcase in Tallahassee and will continue to represent the school in the state competition on May 26. The students’ project, “Rising Above, Sunny Day Floods looks to find solutions to nuisance flooding on Florida’s coasts due to rising sea levels. Nuisance flooding occurs when sea levels rise above the mouth of storm drain outages, and the water is pushed in the opposite direction back through the sewers and into the city streets, even though storm sewer drains are designed to flush rain water out into the ocean. This usually occurs a couple seasons out of the year with the exceptionally high spring or king tides. Lately, water has been increasingly flooding coastal streets on dry, sunny days due to this phenomenon. The rising seas are contributing to this. However, it is the government’s responsibility to address decay-

The students are proposing a Hazard Mitigation Fee for coastal developers who choose to build on the coastal cities affected by sunny day floods in order to help fund mitigation projects related to the flooding. The entire class worked cooperatively to identify the public policy problem that needed to be addressed, did lengthy research on the problem, evaluated alternative solutions, developed their own solu-

tion in the form of a public policy, and created a political action plan to enlist local or state authorities to adopt their proposed policy. Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid visited the class to give his ideas and discuss public policy. The class also visited with Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Rebecca Sosa, to discuss the topic and gain insight. This project has allowed the students to experience the real life process of policy making in government.

New Optimist Clubhouse opens with inaugural Sports Hall of Fame Former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula headlined the inaugural class of the Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame inductees. Joining Shula was his former player tight end Jim Mandich, former MLB player Alex Ochoa and longtime Miami Lakes Optimist Club member Jack McCall. The induction ceremony for the 2017 class Hall of Fame took place May 13 during the grand opening of the new Optimist Club house at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. The selection committee, which included chairman and AP sports writer Tim Reynolds, vice chair Roman Garcia, secretary Carlos Alvarez and committee member Jim Hamilton, also a long time member of the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, voted unanimously for the four nominees to enter the Hall. According to Reynolds, the four inductees epitomized the basic criteria for selection, that being they have made significant contribution to sports and the local community. The committee reviewed ten candidates for the Hall of Fame, generated both internally and from the public, before selecting the inductees.

Shula, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is still widely regarded as the best coach in NFL history. His record includes 347 victories, two Super Bowl championships as coach of the Dolphins, and he engineered the NFL's first and still only Perfect Season. Shula has also had enormous impact on the town as a businessman, with a hotel, restaurants and a golf course within the town bearing his name. Mandich was a Miami Lakes resident and longtime star tight end for the Miami Dolphins. After his playing days, he became a successful broadcaster and radio host for Miami Dolphins games, as well as a restaurateur and owner-operator of a drywall contracting company. He died in April 2011 from bile duct cancer, and his family – through the wildly successful fundraising Dolphins Cancer Challenge – continues his legacy and impact on the communi-

ty today. Ochoa, a Miami Lakes native born and still a resident of the town at this time, spent parts of eight seasons with six different Major League Baseball franchises before continuing his playing career in Japan. He was a career .279 batter in the majors, was part of the 2002 Anaheim Angels team that won the World Series, and now operates a training facility for major leaguers. McCall has spent 45 years as a coach, officer and volunteer for the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, plus overseeing the entire South Florida Optimist district. He has coached hundreds if not thousands of children over three generations, including even his own grandchildren. His commitment to his “Green Machine” team is unparalleled, and he is a member of the South Florida District Optimist International Hall of Fame.

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Town Council recognizes public safety heroes on May 2 Several community members were recognized for their accomplishments and community support at the May 2 Town Council meeting. The Council joined by Town Police Major George Perez and Battalion Chief Abel Fernandez for Fire Station 64, honored a group of public safety heroes including Alex Acosta, MiamiDade Fire Rescue; John Kenyan, Hialeah Fire Rescue; Sergeant Oscar Pla, Miami Dade Police Department; and Officers Kenny Torres and Carlos Ortiz of the Town’s Police Department. On April 26, in response to a severe car crash at N.W. 67 Avenue and Miami Lakes Drive, the selfless and heroic actions of these individuals (some off-duty) at the scene were truly worthy of recognition as they provided the first assistance to all involved and their actions paved the way for the integrity of the crash scene,

landing zone, and expeditious flow of traffic. A very fitting recognition as Public Service Recognition Week is held annually the week of May 7-13. A Public Service Recognition Week proclamation was bestowed to the entire Town of Miami Lakes personnel for their outstanding service to our community. Several students from the Bob Graham Educational Center’s (BGEC) Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Academy Savage Robots Teams, were honored for finishing fifth of the 54 teams competing in the RoboSlam VEX IQ competition at the Miami Youth Fair. The team, led by teacher Marilyn Dieppa, also qualified and competed in the VEX IQ state competition for their STEM research project – a robotic walking cane for the blind fully equipped with a GPS and obstacle detector.

Town receives 9th consecutive Playful City USA recognition For the ninth consecutive year, the Town of Miami Lakes has been recognized as a Playful City USA community. Playful City communities are acknowledged for making a commitment to play and physical activity by developing unique local action plans to increase the quantity and quality of play in their community. “It’s an honor for our community top once again receive this special recognition,” said Mayor Manny Cid. “We pride ourselves in ensuring that there is access to playgrounds and

activities for all ages in an inclusive manner.” This year’s application featured the Town’s new Youth Center, nicknamed “The Spot,” which opened last November. “The Spot,” located close to local middle and high schools, offers a variety of quality innovative programs in such areas as arts, culture, education, health and wellness, recreation and skill development. By focusing on the “play” aspect of the Youth Center through the Open Hang Nights and fun field trips, the Town has

seen an increase in participation. In addition, a Youth Council, comprised of middle and high school students, was created to make decisions on programming and workshops, thus providing additional opportunities to assume leadership roles while building valuable skills for their future. Playful City USA is a national program from KaBOOM! that celebrates and promotes local policies that increase play opportunities for children.

Interactive transportation map on website Town of Miami Lakes announced an interactive Transportation Improvements Map has been added to the Town’s website at www.miamilakes-fl.gov/mobility. The new map allows users to click on each “pin” that identifies a specific transportation project. A pop up window then appears providing additional

information about the project, as well as links to access the project’s design plans. Based on ideas generated at the Town’s Transportation Summit, a list of strategies recommended for the Town to pursue was incorporated into the Town’s Strategic Plan, and Town staff was authorized to pursue the ideas with responsi-

ble outside agencies, as well as seek grant opportunities and legislative appropriations to implement the strategies. Each “pin” on the map indicates a project that was derived from the Transportation Summit. For more information, contact Transportation Planner Michelle Gonzalez at gonzalezm@miamilakes-fl.gov, or

Goleman baseball team heads to regional showdown with McCarthy Barbara Goleman’s baseball team defeated American Heritage, 5-4, in 10 innings last week in a regional quarterfinal game, setting up a showdown with Broward’s Archbishop McCarthy in a semifinal match up. Goleman, which recently won its third consecutive district championship, got off to a strong start, scoring three runs in the first inning and kept the Patriots scoreless for five and half innings. The Gators added two more runs in the ninth inning to seal the victory. Goleman (18-9) faced Archbishop McCarthy (25-2), which is ranked No.13 in the nation, on Tuesday, May 16 at Alex Fernandez Field. The regional semifinal will be the first-ever game between the two teams. The Mavericks destroyed Miami Springs, 15-0, to advance to the semifinal game. The Gators defeated division rival, Miami Springs, 4-2, to win the district championship. Goleman head coach Tony Lopez said his team’s regular season games against elite teams helped them prepare for the regional playoffs featuring

He said in the past five years, the Gators were eliminated in the regional quarterfinal, facing strong pitchers on the mound and powerful hitters at the plate. The game against American Heritage was a flip-flop. Gators’ ace pitcher Adrian Garrastazu cooled off the Patriots’ hot bats and center

fielder John Urena’s batting was superb. Urena’s batting performance propelled Goleman to victory against Miami Springs. “I told my players we’ve been here before and I needed for them to step up, keep the energy going and stay positive,” Lopez said. “Pitching was the No. 1 thing that helped us win.”

Previously, Saile set a personal record with 14 strikeouts and tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout, 3-0, of visiting WKU which kicked off a CUSA softball doubleheader at Felsberg Field and FIU Softball Stadium.

AFTER BEATING Miami Jackson to win the district championship for the third consecutive season, Barbara Goleman’s softball team fell to American Heritage, 15-0, in a regional 166A quarterfinal game that eliminated the Gators from the postseason. Saile tied the league-high total for punchouts in a single game, the fourth 14-strikeout game by a C-USA pitcher this season. Saile needed one big hit, and she got it in the fifth inning, when redshirt senior Dani Mowry blasted the first pitch she saw in the fifth inning over the fence in left center for a three-run homer, her career-best sixth of the year. Saile was nearly perfect, hitting one batter in the first and giving up the bunt single in the fourth. She faced one more than the minimum for her seventh shutout of the season and 22nd complete game of her first collegiate campaign. Saile went from 10th to sixth in program history for total strikeouts in a

SHANNON SAILE season, at 184. It was the seventh time she pushed her strikeout total into double digits.

Pace hosts STEM Boot Camp for middle schoolers By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School hosted its third annual Spartan STEM Boot Camp for students from fifth through eighth grade on May 6. Around 50 students from middle schools across South Florida enjoyed and learned with a day of activities related to science, technology, engineering, and math. Teachers from Pace’s Signature STEM Academy led sessions in Robotics/Coding, Engineering, Chemistry, and Biology. In the Robotics/Coding sessions led by Hedda Falcon, lead teacher for the STEM Academy Emerging Computer Technolo-

gies Program, students used an iPad app to program robots to drive and turn on paths on the floor. Each of the group’s coding and logic were displayed on the TVs within the school’s Innovation Center so that students could provide input and advice on how to program their robots. Luis Mayo, lead teacher for the STEM Academy Advanced Biomedical Sciences Program, and Pace science teacher Kevin Alegret taught campers in the Biology sessions about genetics and working with alleles by experimenting with and analyzing beans. For the Chemistry sessions,

campers mixed chemicals with beakers to see how antacids counteracted with acids, under the tutelage of Pace science teachers Dr. Enrique Dominguez and Scott Giberson. Jose Ramos and Laura Lima, lead teachers for the STEM Academy Engineering Program, directed campers in the Engineering sessions on how to design, create, and test catapults using popsicle stick, rubber bands, and bottle caps. After campers built their catapults, they tested them outdoors and indoors by launching small objects and seeing how far they flew.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Goleman High School sophomore Rakia Walker’s academic achievements and skill have earned her a spot in the prestigious University of Miami’s Scholar Program in Business, Ethics and Leadership. No other student at Goleman has earned this internship. With the help of her mom, Rewa, Walker found out about the program which aligned perfectly with Walker’s goals and passion – business and leadership. The program offers high school students a leg-up on the transition to a college environment by having students stay on campus for three weeks. Walker is a part of Goleman’s Hospitality and Tourism Magnet Program and

plans to run her own business in the industry in the future. She has also been a part of the nonprofit organization Break Through Miami, since third grade. The program helps students become leaders, achievers, and explore options for academic success. “I like money and I like leading people,” said Walker. “If I had a business it would be progressive and fun.” Walker’s dream school is Florida State University and she plans to major in business. Walker cites her mom as a source of inspiration for her drive. “My mom wants the best for me,” said Walker. “I love her very much and I try hard to make her proud.” The cost to stay on campus

RAKIA WALKER and a meal plan for the internship is a financial burden totaling over $7,500 for Walker and her mother to fund. Those interested in donating to Walker’s fundraising for the University of Miami internship can contact rakiawalkerdonations@hotmail.com.
