‘Cars for Cure’ raises $29,000 for Sylvester Cancer Center research

As the University of Miami’s Sylvester Cancer Center continues to find a cure for cancer and treat patients stricken with the deadly disease, one Miami Lakes event is helping them financially with their efforts. The 4th annual Miami Lakes Cars for Cure raised about $29,000 last month and the proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Center for local research in finding a cure. The classic car showcase, which is sponsored by Auto Nation and The Graham Companies, has been collecting proceeds for four years and will continue to do so for many years to come. The event raised $23,000 last year and surpassed its benchmark in 2018, but the final numbers won’t be determined until later this month. The event’s organizer, Roberto Alonso Jr., said he hopes to hand over a check in the amount of more BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER principal Yecenia than $30,000 to the University Martinez (left) congratulates Marilyn Dieppa who was named of Miami. Miami-Dade Public School’s Science Teacher of the Year. “We are still receiving (See story on Page 3.) checks,” he said.

According to the American Cancer Society, each year, 12.7 million people in the U.S. discover they have cancer and 7.6 million die from the disease. Federal, state and local governments cut some funding over the years for cancer treatment centers. The proceeds from the Miami Lakes Cars for Cure helps oncologists and scientists in their efforts to zero in on a cure for cancer. Alonso knows cancer all to well. His father succumbed to the deadly disease in 2013 shortly after Roberto Alonso Sr. founded the first classic car show on Main Street. The father was Miami Lakes’ first-ever vice mayor and held the position for four consecutive years. Following his father’s death, Alonso repackaged the classic car show to feature food, entertainment and fun activities for the kids, but more importantly, raise money and awareness for cancer. This year, the event attracted more than 5,000 participants,

the most since its birth and Alonso said the social gathering will get bigger and better each year. Besides the cars, Milos’ Craft Beer’s beer garden was popular among the guests, and the food and entertainment won them over as well. “We’re thankful for the beer garden and the donors, and the volunteers who help run the event,” Alonso said. “I thank the volunteers for making the event a success.” He said the classic car show means a lot to people who are affected by cancer. “The event is for them and we will continue it for them,” he said. “So many families are very proud and the Miami Lakes is so supportive for this cause.” Alonso is already planning out next year’s event, which is scheduled for Sunday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Next year will be bigger and better,” he said. “No matter how big the event gets, we are going to stay loyal to Main Street.”

‘We the People’ team places third in Nationals After winning first place at the District and State competition, Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) Civic Engagement Academy's (CEA) We the People Team placed 3rd at the We the People National Invitational, hosted by the Center of Civic Education on May 4 through 8 at the National Conference Center in the Washington, D.C. area. Under the direction of Jackeline Hernandez and John Brady, the 8th grade We the People teams have ranked among the top three teams in the nation for the last three years. This year’s team competed 15 strong against teams of over 30 students. They are a model of perseverance, a strong work ethic and an indomitable spirit.

A Look Inside:

They are a competitive team, but most importantly a family. The scholars will graduate BGEC with unforgettable memories, a thorough understanding of our country's rich history and a passion for the office of the citizen. They have truly continued to uphold the tenets and traditions of the CEA program and the legacy of Senator Bob Graham. The administration of BGEC thanks Doris Servilla, Ora Harris, and Alissa Menduiña for their dedication to the team this year and all the hometown supporters for their love and encouragement. The BGEC family looks forward to continuing a legacy that will make the Town of Miami Lakes proud.

Main Street Players Children’s Theatre Workshop set June 11-29 Places everyone! It’s time once again to raise the curtain at the Main Street Playhouse (MSP) on its youngest performers. MSP believes that the development of theatrical skills is a life-long journey. The MSP Children’s Theatre Workshop is perfect for the scene-stealing stars and the budding thespians waiting quietly in the wings. Students will sing, dance and act their way into the magical world of theatre, where every day will be filled with music, movement and adventure. The Workshop will culminate with

an on stage performance for friends and family during the final class session. Workshop teachers are there to provide a program that not only broadens the students’ understanding of content, but also leads them to develop secondary skills that are unique to theatre training – the confidence to speak in front of a group, and to engage with peers, the ability to work as a team to solve problems, and the skill to examine situations from different angles and perspectives. The Workshop is limited in size offering personal training

to all participants from June 11 through June 29, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily. The workshop fee is $625 and is open to ages 7 through 13. Early morning and late afternoon pick-ups are available for an additional fee. The fee includes a camp T-shirt, group photo, and a personal headshot. For more information or to register for the Workshop, visit the MSP website at www.mainstreetplayers.com or call the Workshop Coordinator, Dennis Lyzniak, at 786-395-7296.

Council extends managerial deadline to June 15 THE MIAMI LAKER

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Acting on rumors that the search for a new town manager was rigged, the Miami Lakes Town Council reopened the application process for a citizen’s committee to consider additional candidates seeking the job. The Town’s Human Resources department and Town Manager Selection Committee will accept resumes until the Friday, June 15 deadline, giving applicants an opportunity to apply for the position following hearsay that the finalists have already been predetermined. At the May 2 meeting, lawmakers approved Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez’s recommendation to restart the application process and dismissed any rumors the Town picked a town manager way ahead of the committee narrowing down the list of candidates for council members to interview. Lawmakers will pick the town’s top administrator later this year to replace Alex Rey, who’s retiring. Rey has been the town manager from 2002 to 2008, and was tapped for the position again in 2010 after he left his position as building director for Miami Beach.

The new town manager, who will earn about $120,000 per year, will run the day-to-day operations, hire and fire town staff, select vendors’ contracts and oversee a $28 million budget, among other duties. Town Attorney Raul Gastesi said 60 applicants applied for the job by the first deadline, which was April 20, and the selection process has been transparent as possible. “We have met with the committee and discussed the applicants’ requirements and experience and the meetings are all recorded,” Gastesti said. “No one can doubt the process is transparent.” Gastesi said some applications didn’t meet the town’s minimum requirements and qualifications for the position, while the rest of the resumes were on point. “We would point out to the committee that these are in doubt and these should make it to the next round.” According to residents, rumors have been spreading around town that some people indicated the process is fixed and decided not to apply for the town manger’s job. Councilmember Tim Daubert initially placed the matter on the meeting agenda for discussion but pulled it following resi-

dents’ comments the Town is speeding up the selection process and not allowing the committee to do its job. “I have two friends with government managerial experience who applied for the job and when I reached out to them later they said the process is fixed,” said an irate Maria Kramer, who serves on the selection committee. “That pisses me off. This is an insult to the committee. We deserve a process that’s fair.” Bob Ruiz, who also is a committee member, said the selection process should stay open until a new town manager is picked. “Some people don’t apply because they said it’s a done deal,” he said. Gastesi said the rumors are an affront to council members and the committee. He also said some people didn’t apply because it may cause a friction with their current bosses. “The town got complaints because their names appeared on the town’s website,” he said. “If you didn’t apply, you made that decision on your own.” Rodriguez said council members have the final pick for the next town manager. “Nothing is a done deal,” he said. “No one is going to tell me how to vote.”

In other Council actions: • Lawmakers gave their initial approval for an ordinance to create a provision in the town’s code for proper paint colors for commercial and industrial buildings. The ordinance stems from Councilmember Marilyn Ruano’s proposal to address standards for architectural designs for commercial buildings, where some structures can be painted different colors such as hot pink, purple and lime green. The town’s Planning and Zoning Board approved an ordinance last week for the town to create a color palette for the buildings to reflect the city’s code for architectural designs and painting structures. Councilmember Frank Mingo was the sole dissenting voice. Second reading of the ordinance

and council’s final vote is scheduled for next month. • Lawmakers approved a resolution which authorizes a project to be added to the town’s Transportation Master Plan and to seek funding through the budget to extend the westbound outer left turn lane on N.W. 154 Street by 180’ approaching N.W. 77 Avenue to provide for more queuing capacity for southbound Palmetto traffic and throughput capacity for westbound traffic. The project is expected to cost $350,000. • Council members approved a resolution which instructs the town manager to apply for an FDOT County Incentive Grant Program for the N.W. 59 Avenue Roadway Extension and Redevelopment project for $4 million.

Two best friends in softball are now adversaries in college games THE MIAMI LAKER

It all started in 2006 when Alexis Castroman and Alyssa Rodriguez started their journey together in softball. They played recreation ball at the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes until they were 16 yearsold. Along the way they were teammates since the tender age of 10 playing travel ball for the Miami Lakes Heat Team coached by Alex Castroman. For some reason it didn’t stop there. The two girls played one year at Mater Lakes Academy before Castroman ended her career at American High School and Rodriguez graduated from Doral Academy, with both girls earning college scholarships. Castroman is playing for St. Thomas University, Rodriguez enrolled at Webber International University, and the two girls faced each other for the first time in college during a conference double header game. The Bobcats won the game. The game was emotional for both players, as they had to play hard against each other and did a little trash talking. “It was intense to see them both out there playing against each other. said Alex Castroman. “These girls have been together since they were sixyears-old, and always spent their birthdays, beach, New

Year’s Eve, together.” Following the game, the girls sought each other and hugged and reminisced about old times. Castroman said he, his wife, Ivette Castroman, and Alyssa’s

parents, Diana and Alex Rodriguez, are all extremely proud of both girls. “You couldn’t have a scripted this any better,” said Alex Castroman.

This event was introduced to Pace by transfer students of Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep, where Hunger Fest originated and was a standing tradition for 21 years, until the school closed its doors last summer. Over the span of 27 hours, students went without food while only drinking water as they prayed together, prepared sandwiches and delivered the MONSIGNOR EDWARD PACE HIGH SCHOOL students lunches to local homeless shel- participated in the first annual Hunger Fest event to feed the homeless and raise funds for sister schools in Haiti. ters. The purpose of the weekend was to engage in prayer while raising awareness to those suffering in hunger and poverty in our local community and around the world. The students, together with Pace staff, faculty and individuals who were actively involved in Archbishop Curley’s previous Hunger Fest’s, packed over 2,300 lunches for the homeless and raised over $1,000 for Pace’s three sister schools in Haiti.
