Wayne Slaton, Miami Lakes withdraw appeals regarding reinstatement of Michael Pizzi By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Despite an entreaty from many residents to take the case to the Florida Supreme Court to keep his job, Miami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton and the town decided to end the long-running legal dispute over who should be the city’s rightful mayor. Flanked by councilmembers and town staff during a news conference two weeks ago at Town Hall, Slaton said he and Miami Lakes will not appeal the Florida Third District Court of Appeal’s decision that allowed Michael Pizzi to return as mayor, which ended his eight month fight to get his old job back following his acquittal of public corruption charges last year. Slaton, who was elected mayor during a special election two months after Pizzi’s arrest, said many residents wanted the Supreme Court to hear the case, but considering the length of time for a decision and additional attorney fees, he thought it would be in the best interest for Miami Lakes

to step down and allow Pizzi to finish his term, which ends in November 2016. “Getting an appeal to the Supreme Court is not an easy or quick process,” Slaton said. “It is not inconceivable that the process could take a year or more.” Last month, the Court of Appeal upheld Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Gisela Cardonne Ely’s ruling that Pizzi can return to political office as the town’s rightful mayor. She based her decision on state law that says an elected official who was suspended from office following an arrest can return if that person has been acquitted of all charges in the court of law. Ely issued a 30-day stay to give the town a chance to appeal her decision, but the panel of judges for the Court of Appeal sided with her. Governor Rick Scott suspended Pizzi from office after his arrest in August 2013, and Miami Lakes’ town charter required a special election 90 days following his

Slaton, Town withdraw appeal; Pizzi back as Mayor (Continued from Page 1) indictment on corruption charges. Slaton won the special election. Following Pizzi’s acquittal on seven counts of bribery and kick back charges in August of last year, Scott refused to reinstate him, indicating Miami Lakes elected a new mayor to serve the remainder of his term. Pizzi sued Scott and the Florida

Supreme Court forced the governor to lift his suspension, but he never asked the high court to return him to office. Instead, he filed a lawsuit against the town and Slaton to force his return at Town Hall. At issue during the legal confrontation was the town’s charter versus state law. According to Town Attorney

FLANKED by Councilmembers and Town staff, Wayne Slaton announces during a press conference that he and the Town of Miami Lakes are withdrawing their appeal regarding the reinstatement of Michael Pizzi as Mayor.

Raul Gastesi, Pizzi’s term ended when Slaton was elected the new mayor; Pizzi’s attorneys said Florida law allows their client to return as mayor immediately after a jury found him not guilty. As part of the courts’ rulings, Pizzi is also entitled to back pay starting on the day he was arrested, a reportedly $56,000 in salary and fringe benefits, said Town Manager Alex Rey. Pizzi also wants the town to pay for his legal bills for his corruption trial, Florida Supreme Court and Circuit Court lawsuits, and the Court of Appeal. Gastesi said Pizzi’s lawyers filed the motions for the legal fees, which he has yet to disclose. The town has bankrolled about $378,805 in legal fees to fight Pizzi’s lawsuits, and to keep Slaton in office. Pizzi commended Slaton for a job well done while serving as mayor, and encouraged him to stay involved in the town in some capacity. “I hope we can move on and let’s make Miami Lakes the best city in the United States of America,” Pizzi told reporters outside Town Hall. Slaton alluded he may run for mayor again next year. “There will be an election for mayor this coming year,” he said. Most of his supporters urged him to do so. Miami Lakes resident Mandy Rebull said 2016 is around the corner. “And we, as residents and taxpayers, must make a difference and stop the circus,” he said.

Miami Lakes resident Vivian Campa said Slaton is the best leader for the town and she expects him to run for mayor next year. “Thank you, Mr. Slaton,” she said. “You are a true leader who has Miami Lakes and its residents’ best interest at heart. 2016 is near and I’m sure you will be back where you belong. Leading the town selflessly and successfully.” Cecile Pelaez, another town resident, said: “Can’t wait to elect the next mayor…. Mr. Wayne Slaton. The year 2016 can’t come sooner!” Leslie Weiner Langbein, an attorney and a former member of the Miami Lakes Charter Review Commission, thanked Slaton and council members for handling the legal battle with class. “Thank you Mayor Wayne Slaton and council members for leading us through this fiasco with grace and dignity,” she said. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez said Slaton’s leadership helped make a smooth transition to a new mayor in the town. “Thank you Mayor Wayne Slaton for your leadership and guidance. You are a Class Act,” Rodriguez said. Residents want to put the legal battle behind them and move on,

MAYOR MICHAEL PIZZI but they are still worried about their tax dollars paying for the attorney fees. “Welcome back Mr. Pizzi, and I hope the town can work for the betterment for our town, seniors and children,” Raul Garcia said at the May 5 regular Town Council meeting. David Oliver said it’s time for Miami Lakes to get back to business but cautioned town elected officials who are seeking reelection next year. “I hope everyone gets reelected but if you can get back a substantial rebate for attorney fees and put it back in the hands of taxpayers, you will have no problem getting reelected,” Oliver said.

In Memoriam:

Sergio Campos, longtime leader of Loch Ness HOA By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Sergio Campos was the face of Loch Ness. When residents wanted to know everything about Miami Lakes, Campos, a longtime resident and president of the Loch Ness Homeowners Association, told them anecdotes that enriched their minds with knowledge to become good homeowners, and taught them to appreciate the quality of living. “He was described as the best friend in the world to the Miami Lakes community,” Mayor Michael Pizzi said at last week’s Town Council meeting, where, on behalf of the Town Council, he proclaimed May 5, 2015 as Sergio Campos Day. Campos’ family, friends and council members paid tribute to

him during the special presentation portion of the meeting, honoring a man who loved his family and community so much that he shared his passion with everyone he met, including strangers. Campos died on April 26 after a long battle with cancer. He was 72. For his hard work and dedication to Miami Lakes, town officials drafted legislation to co-designate Loch Ness Drive as Sergio Campos Way. The road is the main entrance to Campos’ beloved Loch Ness, a community that he served and contributed to for many years. Council members will approve a resolution in June requesting Miami-Dade County rename the roadway in his honor. During the council meeting, lawmakers shared fond memories of a man who was indefatigable in his devotion that helped meld Miami Lakes into a better city, and treated residents like family. Vice Mayor Manny Cid said he recalls vividly the time when he was soak-drenched while on the campaign trial, and the Campos welcomed him into their home. “During my campaign in 2012, it was raining and I was soaking wet walking through Loch Ness when Sergio and his wife, Miriam, invited me inside their home,” said Cid, who sponsored the initiative to rename the road after Campos. “When I got to know them, that’s when the first moment where I say Campos truly loves Loch Ness and

this community. From the bottom of my heart, we appreciate all of the work he has done for years, and renaming the road is a token of our appreciation.” Born in Cuba, Campos and his wife moved to Miami Lakes 30 years ago, and he immediately played an active role in his community. He was elected president of the Loch Ness Homeowners Association and held the position for many years. Along the way, he earned so much respect that Florida Governor Rick Scott took notice. “He not only has an impact to the town but state wide as well,” Cid said. “When Scott and his staff discussed Miami Lakes in emails, they talk about Campos.” Councilmember Tony Lama said Campos was a walking encyclopedia. “I learned a lot about my area and the lakes thanks to him,” said Lama. “He knew the history of all the areas in Miami Lakes and could tell the entire story of your neighbor. He spent his entire life serving the community.” Councilmember Tim Daubert said Campos helped him during his first term as president of the Lake Carol Homeowners Association. “I learned a lot from him and how things ran, and he told me about the background of Miami Lakes,” Daubert said. “I truly learned a lot from him.”

M. Lakes Quilters Club prepares patriotic blankets for vets in Germany By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Wounded United States veterans who are enduring rigorous rehabilitation in Germany will soon receive special gifts, which were made 4,884 miles away by a group of Miami Lakes residents simply saying thanks for serving their country. The Miami Lakes Quilters Club created a host of patrioticdesigned blankets to help lift the soldiers’ spirits before they return home to a warm and hero’s welcome. The group meets each Tuesday at the Mary Collins Community Center, where members pick a cause, topic or an event and then create quilts that reflect the images

affecting people in hopes of brightening up their day. Sally Whitten said a friend of the group, who’s a member of a quilters club in North Carolina, talked to her daughter, a nurse in Germany, and she thought it would be a good idea for soldiers to have quilts as a support gift while being nursed back to health. “Our friend presented it to us,” said Whitten. The Miami Lakes group went right to work, designing 18 of the best patriotic-designed coverlets, each with two layers of fabric with a layer of cotton, wool, feathers, which are all stitched firmly together. The Miami Lakes Veteran Committee tentatively budgeted

money to ship the quilts over to Germany, said group member Nancy Barton. “It’s an opportunity to do something nice for our veterans,” she said. The group, which has been around for 10 years, designed quilts for other occasions but the military project was a priority. Normally it takes about two months to finish a quilt, but one month was all it took for the members to create the 18 coverlets with the different images of Old Glory. “We sped up the process for the military because of the need for our veterans,” said Whitten. Previously, the Miami Lakes Quilters designed quilts and sent them to people and cities who were struck by Hurricanes and other natural disasters, including the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. The group, comprised of retired school teachers, nurses and housewives, also designed quilts for homeless children and orphanages, and for high school and college graduates. Toni Kavanagh said making the quilts is time consuming. “But it’s fun and worth it,” she said. “It’s a wonderful feeling.”

Free financing available for energy efficient improvements

Veterans Committee Meeting Thursday, May 21, 5:30 PM Miami Lakes Government Center, 6601 Main Street, Miami Lakes, Fla.

The Clean Energy Green Corridor, managed and funded by Ygrene, provides 100 percent financing to commercial and residential property owners for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation improvements. The most common upgrades are water heaters, air conditioners, solar panels, impact windows and doors, and strengthened roofs, but hundreds of other types of upgrades can also qualify to be financed. In December, the Town

Council voted unanimously for Miami Lakes to join other MiamiDade communities to become part of the groundbreaking Green Corridor District, and tap into more than $550 million of private capital funding for residential and commercial buildings. To date, 25 projects have been approved and are in process of being completed in Miami Lakes. To see if you are eligible, or to apply online, visit www.flgreencorridor.com, or call 305-5690015.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Former T-Bred Gary Snow, owner of Snow’s Jewelers in Miami Lakes, was inspired by the movie Calendar Girls to fundraise for former classmates who are battling cancer. Snow created and funded the idea for a playful girls calendar with each month featuring a Hialeah Senior High alumna from the classes of 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1969. The calendar, which runs from July 2015 through June 2016 includes Cheryl Jocz, Peggy O’Grady, Mary Varela, Barbara Andrews, Nancy Hallbert, Linda Szaryc, Dee Chamberlain, Vickie Bailey, Sylvia Phillips, Linda Lee, Peggy Burke, and Charlotte Layfield. “I heard that some former classmates were battling cancer and I thought this could be a way to fundraise for them,” said Snow. Snow, part of the reunion committee for Hialeah Senior High School’s class of 1967, is active in keeping in touch with classmates and is sending the funds from the calendar. “At Snow’s Jewelers we sign up to host registration for the Susan G. Komen events, so we are involved with funding help for those dealing with cancer,” said Snow, “but for this specific situation, I wanted the funds to go directly to someone I used to share the halls with in high school.” Snow also celebrated a reunion weekend with the class of 1967 in early May that included events at the Hialeah Racetrack, the new Milander Auditorium, and a friendly softball game at Miami Lakes Optimist Park.

Miami Lakes Town Council actions during May 5 meeting The following actions were taken by the Miami Lakes Town Council at the May 5 regular meeting: • Lawmakers gave their final approval on an ordinance to amend the town’s budget by reallocating $400,000 from the fund balance to the general fund budget to pay for the attorney fees in the lawsuit Mayor Michael Pizzi filed against the town to get his job back after he was acquitted of public corruption charges last year. • Councilmembers gave their initial approval for an ordinance to require a request for code enforcement fine reduction be made after the violation for which a civil penalty is corrected, and stipulates the criteria that the hearing officer should consider in acting upon a request, which includes the gravity of the violation, any actions taken by the applicant to correct the violation, any previous or other outstanding violations and timeliness to comply. According to the proposed ordinance, whether the applicant’s failure to comply with an order is due to an inability to comply based on factors beyond the control of the applicant. There may be no reduction to the town’s direct costs in prosecuting the violation and the property must be in compliance before a request for reduction in the civil penalty is granted. The proposed ordinance provides guidelines for maximum reductions based on the type of ownership, consistent with the criteria the Council had been utilizing, specifically, no more than a 50 percent reduction for bankowned properties, no more than 75 percent for properties owned by other entities, and a maximum

reduction to one day’s fine plus costs for an owner-occupied residential property. • The Council approved a change order in the amount of $220,000 to Lukes-Sawgrass Landscape to purchase and install trees in the town. The new contract is valued at $245,000 and is to be expended from both the general fund budget and capital projects. • Councilmembers authorized the town manager to execute a license agreement providing for FDOT to harmonize the town’s right of way with the 1-75 sound barrier and other highway improvements. FDOT District is constructing the I-75/Palmetto Express Lanes project in Miami-Dade County, which extends about 10 miles along the Palmetto Expressway from West Flagler Street to Miami Lakes Drive and about three miles along I-75 from the Palmetto Expressway to Northwest 170 Street. The project started in 2014 and is expected to be finished in 2017. • The Council approved an interlocal agreement with the city of Miami Gardens for floodplain management services and technical support services. Miami Gardens has requested assistance with the town’s Building Department for floodplain management. Miami Lakes operates one of the most successful floodplain management programs in the state and is one of the very few in South Florida to obtain a Class 5 rating, which translates into a 25 percent discount in flood insurance for residents. The department is also a leader in technological information in the building services industry. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Tony Lama’s suggestion to send a strong message to the county that Miami Lakes supports innovation and free market principles, and the county should pave the way of innovative companies like Uber and Lyft to operate in South Florida without impediments. • Councilmembers approved Vice Mayor Manny Cid’s proposal to direct the town manager to work with Miami-Dade Fire Chief David Downey on the possibility of adding one or two more medical rescue transport vehicles to serve town residents. With the new fire station on the west side soon to be open Cid thought it would be a good idea for the additional rescue transport vehicles to help save lives. • Councilmembers approved Cid’s recommendation to direct the town manager to create a page on the town’s website for nonprofits to outline the resources available (technical assistance and permitting) in a uniform matter to help expand areas of service outside of local governments scope for town residents.

M. Lakes-based HeartWare wins Beacon Council Award in Life Sciences category HeartWare, a global medical device company dedicated to delivering safe, high-performing and transformative therapies that enable patients with heart failure to get back to life, recently won Miami-Dade Beacon Council Award in the Life Sciences category. During the organization’s 13th annual awards ceremony held at the University of Miami Student Activities Center in Coral Gables, the Miami Lakes company, located at 14420 N.W. 60 Avenue, was recognized for its achievements in successfully treating people with heart conditions. The company’s innovative technologies are creating advances in the miniaturization of Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) leading to less invasive surgical procedures and increasing the patient population who may be suitable for VAD therapy. According to HeartWare, heart failure is a degenerative, terminal disease that affects more than 20 million people worldwide, and causing more than 7.25 million deaths a year. About one million people suffer from Class IV heart failure, the most severe stage of the disease. Heart transplant surgery is a proven treatment option for class IV heart failure patients but a limited number of donor hearts become available each year, according to HeartWare. Ventricular assist devices can provide circulatory support until a donor heart becomes available or provide long-term support as an alternative to transplantation, which is called destination therapy. HeartWare’s breakthrough innovations begin with the company’s miniaturized ventricular assist device, which is called HVAD Pump that’s designed to be implanted next to the heart in the pericardial space avoiding the more invasive surgical procedures required with older versions of LVAD technologies. Andres Toledo, vice president of Operations for HeartWare, accepted the Beacon Council award. He was joined by thenMiami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton and Councilmember Ceasar Mestre. “With over 600 employees in our town, Miami Lakes wishes the company much more success in the future,” said Slaton.

ADazzles Salon & Beauty Supply hosts ‘Pay It Forward’ campaign for complimentary makeovers By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Carlo Krockel, owner of ADazzles Salon and Beauty Supply in Miami Lakes, is continuing a series of paying-it-forward altruism wherein he finds deserving members of the community by partnering with local church representatives to offer a complete makeover free of charge. “I did this because I just want to give back to the community,” said Krockel. “I want to help in any way I can and make people feel good about themselves, inside and out.” Krockel and the ADazzles Salon team partnered with local businesses, like Miami Lakes Auto Mall, who donate funds for two people every month to have lunch, receive two full outfits, haircut, styling, and makeup. To

date Krockel has had eight deserving clients nominated by their churches to receive a makeover day. The Pay It Forward event is a campaign that began in January 2015 and will continue until December. Each month has a theme, and in fitting with that theme, two mothers, a mother and daughter duo, will be selected for May, just in time for Mother’s Day and two fathers will be chosen for June. Krockel also plans to do a teacher’s theme for the new school year. “My team was superb with transforming these women,” said Krockel. “And the women were astounded. No one gives something away for no reason, and yet here they were getting a whole day of lunch, outfits and styling done just because.”

CARLO KROCKEL (left) is pictured with his team and the two girls who were treated to a makeover in March, Erika (back, far left) and Sandra (front, second from right).

Barbara Goleman’s badminton team wins North Division GMAC crown For the second time in Goleman’s history, the school’s badminton team won the Divisional Championship title at the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC). “We had a good season with a great finish,” said coach Debbie Perez. Three-year Boys Doubles champ, senior, Danny Xie and Anthony Dally went undefeated in five matches to declare victory. Also undefeated was junior, Patricia Miranda in Girls Singles, which is a first in this category for Goleman. Senior Neil Maragy had a good showing in fourth place in

Boys Singles. In Girls Doubles, seniors Gabriella Sallai and Ashley Osorio finished in second place with seniors, Kirsten Cabarcas and Megan Lopez in third place. Also undefeated was Mixed Doubles with seniors, Marcus Tavarez and Claudia Alonso playing hard and in sync to retain their title from last year. With a strong second place win, juniors Gabriel Brok and Chelsea Henriquez look forward to next season. As most of the team has played together for the past four years, this victory is bittersweet. Despite leaving high school with a win-

ning final season, this is indeed their last season together. The friendships and memories made over the past four years will be long cherished amongst teammates. “Having these amazing kids to mentor over the past four years has been such an honor and so rewarding. These student-athlete’s are in the top 10 percent of their class and have so many amazing opportunities waiting for them upon graduation. I will miss each and every one of them and wish them success and greatness in their futures,” said Perez.

in the comfort of a small underwater tub. The quirky drawing, created by artist Jimmy Adamico, gives the impression that treasures can be found even in the most familiar of places, like within the imaginary oceans of a bathtub or inside a small theatre in the heart of Miami Lakes. The first annual West of Cannes Film Festival (WOCFF) is a short film festival for South Florida filmmakers by South Florida filmmakers. The event will be open to the public and takes place on November 20 - 22, 2015 at The Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street, in Miami Lakes. Independent filmmakers from Southeast Florida counties will have the opportunity to submit their short films to be judged and potentially selected as one of five winners. The submission categories are for narrative, documentary, and experimental short films and winners will be named for Overall Grand Jury Winner, Overall Audience Award, Narrative Winner, Documentary Winner, and Experimental Winner. All five winners will be awarded with the West of Cannes “Neon Palm” Award, an homage, with a cultural Miami twist, to the Cannes “Golden Palm” Award. “We wanted to mimic the prestige found at the Cannes Film Festival and bring it home to Miami with the ‘Neon Palm’ Award,” said Jason Lyzniak, filmmaker and member of Samurai Snacks Productions. “One submission we received for our festival will actually premiere at the Cannes Film Festival which is great to see the caliber of talent that we have submitting.” To submit a short film to WOCFF, participants must be 18 years of age or older and legal residents of a Southeast Florida county (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Monroe or Martin).

Students attending a Southeast Florida University but are not legal residents of Florida may also submit. Films must be no longer than 30 minutes, with no minimum run time, and must have been completed after November 1, 2013. Short films previously screened at other events will be accepted. The regular submission deadline is August 31 for $15. Late submissions will be accepted from September 1 to October 31 for $20. All submissions must be received before Sunday, November 1. Finalists will be selected and notified by November 8. Finalists’ films will be screened at the festival on Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21 with the award ceremony following on Sunday, November 22. A jury of judges consisting of industry professionals including HBO producers, Univision directors, and local established filmmakers will select the winners for the event. “West of Cannes is different from any other film festival in that it’s not international,” said Lyzniak “so we are especially excited to see short films that are homegrown, just like this festival, created and shot in Miami by Miami filmmakers. Downtown Miami and the Design District is saturated with art and film so we tried to bring some of that art and cinema to the Miami Lakes community instead.” WOCFF is made possible by Main Street Players and Samurai Snacks Productions, a nonprofit independent video production house based in Miami with filmmakers Alexander Casanova, Ashley Perdigon, Jason Lyzniak, and Ileana Hernandez. Pace’s flag football team finishes dominant season By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Thirteen wins and 506 unanswered points – this is how Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Lady Spartans flag football team finished their regular season and district playoffs as they won the District 32 championship against Mater Academy on April 28. The 20-0 trouncing of Mater was emblematic of the team’s success all season, as they shutout every single team during the regular season and district playoffs with scores as high as 61-0. The Lady Spartans’ offense, led by Miami-Dade’s 2013 Player of the Year, quarterback Sabrina Cabrera, would rack up points on their opponents. On the defensive end, players such as safety Destiny

Wilson and defensive back Jasmine Rodriguez would completely shut down teams and leave them unable to score. The Lady Spartans were ranked No. 3 in the state and are still the only Florida flag football team to go undefeated in regular season and district play this year. Their victories even earned them the attention of WSVN 7, which aired a profile of the team for their sports show 7 Sports Xtra. The team is helmed by two Pace alumni, with Pace Law Studies teacher and head coach John Rodriguez (Class of 1978) and assistant coach Derek Duque (Class of 2012). “[Coach Rodriguez] expects us to play hard, to our capabilities, and to leave it all out on the field,” said senior wide receiver Daizsa

Jones, a major part of the team’s success who credited their undefeated and un-scored-upon record to the players’hard work and discipline. Jones is one of six seniors graduating from the team this year, along with Cabrera, Rodriguez, Tamira Smalls, Jenny Darbouze, and Pierrelena Amazon. Cabrera, who led the team all the way to the state championships in 2013, was also named Pace’s 2015 Lady Spartan of the Year for her efforts on the flag football and soccer field and her academic work. Once they entered the next round of the playoffs, the Lady Spartans found stiffer competition. In the first round, the team went into a tense double-overtime against the Miramar Patriots before finally winning 19-13. The

Lady Spartans’ season would come to an end on May 5 in a 130 loss against the Everglades Gators in the last play-in game before the state championships. Following the loss, Coach

Rodriguez said, “I’m very proud of these girls and how hard they worked. We had a tremendous season and they exceeded my expectations.”

FMU/Stephenson golf tourney set at Shula’s Florida Memorial University and the Dwight Stephenson Foundation are holding their 2015 Golf Tournament, scheduled for Monday, June 22, at Shula’s Golf Club, 7601 Miami Lakes Drive. Proceeds from the event benefit the university’s Presidential Scholarship, as well as Dwight’s Computers for Kids Program, which provides computers to deserving children from low income South Florida families.

The continued joint efforts of FMU and the Dwight Stephenson Foundation for the 2015 tournament will ensure that students gain the educational, financial and technical skills needed to compete in the global economy. Stephenson was the Miami Dolphins’ second round draft pick from Alabama in 1980 at center and retired in 1987. Under head coach Don Shula, he started in two Super Bowls and

made the Pro Bowl on several occasions and was inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame in 1998. In 1994, he was added to the Miami Dolphins Honor Roll. Stephenson won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 1985, honoring his volunteer and charity work, as well as his excellence on the field, and the Walter Camp Man of the Year in 2005.

High school sports highlights A round-up of local high school sports news: Star pitcher Alexis Castroman and her American softball team were up against the best in the Region 4-7A semifinal – two-time defending Class 7A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas. And the Raiders turned back the Patriots’ challenge in a big way, a 16-0 blowout win in a game that was called in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule. American became the fifth team St. Thomas Aquinas destroyed in the postseason, which outscored their opponents 62-0, and all of the games ended early to prevent the Raiders from running up the score. The game started 30 minutes earlier than the original schedule because meteorologists predicted rain and a storm for the afternoon. Castroman, who recently comadvertising

mitted to St. Thomas University, started the game and was pulled after the Raiders scored their first two runs. She returned in the third inning but American couldn’t stop the Raiders’ onslaught. In other softball news, Barbara Goleman senior Jessica Costero, who hit .518 with four home runs, 27 RBI’s and 37 stolen bases this past season, signed with Agnes Scott College. In baseball news, Nova upset defending state champion American with a 6-3 victory in the 4-7A Region semifinals. Nova’s Jose Oliva hit an RBI double to tie the game and Nova went on to pull off the offset. Gulliver Prep defeated Mater Lakes Academy, 3-1, in their 4-4A Region match up. Gulliver broke a 1-1 knot in the sixth inning and scored the winning run in the seventh inning. Mater Academy defeated Barbara Goleman, 5-2, in the Region 4-6A quarterfinal. Mater defeated Jensen Beach, 10-3, in the Region 4-6A final to propel the Lions to the state championship in Fort Myers.

Pace softball team hosts Middle School Softball Tournament

Pace High senior Gustavo Guerra signs for baseball at St. Thomas U.

Monsignor Edward Pace High softball coach Angel Torres and his team recently hosted the Middle School Softball Tournament to encourage middle school students to pursue playing high school softball. Three middle school teams – Saint Louis Covenant, Immaculate and Holy Rosary Saint Richard, competed in the tournament. Saint Louis Covenant took home first place followed by Immaculate and Holy Rosary Saint Richard. Torres said the event also allowed his high school girls to mentor their younger peers and encourage them to continue to play softball in high school and college. “It’s good experience to play multiple days and get a trophy at the end,” Torres said. “We want to reach out to the middle schools each year. It’s similar to the Slamfest and Speedball tournaments geared towards high school athletes.”

PACE HIGH SCHOOL senior baseball player Gustavo Guerra signed a Letter of Intent to attend St. Thomas University on May 7. Guerra was also one of two recipients of the Kevin Garcia Athletic Scholarship for exceptional student athletes at Pace’s Academic Awards on April 28.

Dade Christian students are recognized by Duke University’s Talent Identification Program For the past 35 years, Duke University's Talent Identification Program, or Duke TIP, has identified bright seventh graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school. The following Dade Christian School students participated this year: Katherine De Pani, Leila Medina, Miguel Tavares and Kayla Torres. Both Tavares and Torres qualified for state recognition by scoring approximately at or above the national average of recent high school graduates on at least one part of the ACT or SAT. On Tuesday, May 5, Torres and Tavares, along with their families, attended a special recognition ceremony held at Florida Atlantic

University. Duke TIP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically gifted and talented students. One of the many opportunities available to candidates is the Summer Residential Programs, which are held on college campuses and in field study locations around the world. These programs offer advanced level courses in challenging and inspiring settings. This summer, Tavares will be attending the residential program at Rollins College. Torres will be attending the residential program during the summer of 2016. The staff at Dade Christian School congratulated Torres, Tavares, and all of the 7th grade participants for their efforts.

Spanish Lake Elementary’s art teacher Jessica Castillo awarded Education Fund grant The Education Fund awarded Spanish Lakes Elementary’s (SLE) newest art teacher, Jessica Castillo, a Mural Grant. The grant was funded through the Lynn & Louis Wolfson II Family Foundation and the R. Kirk Landon Foundation. The purpose of the grant was to increase student awareness in selecting healthy, organic foods and pride in their school cafeteria through art. The students used abstract painting styles to fill in

their chosen food item. With tape and a given set of colors for each assigned vegetable or fruit, the mural to enhance the cafeteria wall was created. Twenty-two students worked diligently with Castillo after school to complete The Power of Art project. “This has given my students a boost in self-esteem and an incredible sense of confidence and ownership in their cafeteria and school,” said Castillo.

Goleman art teacher wins Best in Show for art piece By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The second edition of Artistic License Art Exhibition honored 18 artists at a reception held earlier this year, among them Goleman art teacher Charles E. Humes Jr. Artistic License is a Miami Design District event organized by Miami-Dade Public Schools, Division of Academic Support, Visual and Performing Arts and Dade Art Educators Association. Humes was named one of three for Best in Show for his piece “Homage to the Chairman” created with mixed media. The judges’ decisions were based on the artist’s achievements and the over-

all consistency of their body of work. Judges look for personal vision, innovation and creative risk-taking articulated in the piece. “My body of work may well be characterized as a type of social realism but I like the term ‘humism,’ a humanist way of employing any and everything to tell a story,” said Humes. “My work portrays the subtle drama in the noble African term ‘harambee’ in which everyone and every moment is celebrated. I portray thoughtful vignettes of the plight and circumstance of people, particularly the genre of the AfricanAmerican and people of color.”

Mater Lakes Academy girls’ middle school soccer team in championship (Following is corrected text on a story that ran in the May 1 issue.) In their inaugural season, the Mater Lakes Academy girls’ middle school soccer team reached the Charter Schools League Championship game, but lost to Doral Academy, 5-1. The girls finished the season 7-4. Head coach Robert Vidal said his team played well throughout the season. “We came such a long way when no one gave us a shot,” he said. “We won the semifinal game and made it to the championship game. That was a great accomplishment for the girls.”

Vidal said his team got off to a slow start in the regular season but turned it around. Before a game, he told his team he would buy them pizza if they win. “I ended up spending $100 for pizza,” Vidal quipped. “But it was well worth it.” Vidal said his players are the best soccer team assembled. Team co-captains Daniella Martinez, an eighth grade student, Geraldine Velasco, who’s also in the eighth grade, and 7th grader Ingrid Pagan are the backbone of the team. And so are Vanessa Rodriguez, who was the team’s leading scorer at three goals per game, and

Hailey Vidal, the coach’s daughter. Robert Vidal said his team lives by one motto. “We are all we got,” he said. “No one gave us a chance but we found our way and fought to get to the championship game.”

Pace students Mia Lama and Health Hints: Matthew Schaffer attend Motivation Youth Leadership Conference By Ricky Ali By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School junior Mia Lama and freshman Matthew Schaffer improved their leadership skills at the Youth Leadership Miami conference sponsored by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and held at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus from March 20-21. Lama and Schaffer were invited to the conference after an application process where they answered questions pertaining to Miami-Dade County. Most of the program’s first day involved activities for high schools students to build leadership and teamwork skills.

On the second day, attendees heard from community leaders and inspirational speakers at workshops and presentations. Lama noted that she got the chance to meet with speakers whose programs and organizations she plans to work with more in the future. “The most important thing I took away from the conference was to be open to people’s ideas,” said Lama, who called the conference “a truly enriching experience.” Schaffer called the program “extraordinary,” adding “It taught me a lot about who I am and what it takes to lead a team and help that team to achieve the desired goal.”

Trainer at Shula’s Athletic Club Special to The Miami Laker In the fitness industry you typically hear goals such as “I want to lose 20 pounds,” “I want to drop 10 percent body fat,” or “I want to gain 10-lbs of muscle.” Unfortunately, I also hear goals like “I need to strengthen my back because of an injury to my spine,” or “my doctor told me I need to implement an exercise regimen because of a particular wellness issue” such as hypertension, high cholesterol, or diabetes among others. The question we should ask is “why fitness, wellness, healthy eating and healthy lifestyle habits are neglected throughout our lives in the first place?” An even bigger question is “can we set a long term goal that can also motivate us to consistently address these important components throughout our life?” Without true purpose it can be difficult to set and accomplish specific, attainable, measureable, yet

and Goal Setting challenging short and long term goals that not only inspire us but are aligned with our ambitions. This can lead us to achieve balance in all aspects of a healthy life. My inspiration and purpose is my son. When my son was born, like most parents I realized I had to be his father, teacher, role model, disciplinarian, provider, mentor, and even friend at times. It is my responsibility to teach him. When he turned eight I assumed sole responsibility of him, at that moment I realized in order to always be there for him I had to be healthy and alive. Making this connection between my life goal and my fitness was very important to me, as anything that would negatively affect me would negatively affect him. Consequently I had to look long and hard at myself, my life and the things I needed to change in order to be there in every aspect of life for my son. My journey through life has a passionate purpose that provides me with the motivation,

determination and reason to be successful in life, and strive to achieve balance in all aspects of a healthy life. Now that my son is a successful man that I am so incredibly proud of, I realized how much he did for my life just by being in it. What is your purpose? The objective is to eventually achieve and balance all the aspects of a healthy life. This takes patience, commitment, great planning and organization. Remember failure is also a key part, as failure is only an opportunity to look at the series of events that led to a decision. With strong purpose and drive, optimal fitness and wellness can be achieved. At Shula’s Athletic Club I’m very fortunate to part of a team of young professional coaches that share the same vision as I do. Together we are dedicated and committed to provide everyone in our facility and community with the highest quality service. We understand the importance of living a high quality, disease and injury free life.

Local high school athletes honored at Scholar-Athlete awards luncheon Several Miami Lakes area high school athletes were honored with scholarship awards during the recent Scholar-Athlete Luncheon hosted by the Dade Schools Athletic Foundation. Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School’s (HML) own Yasiel Gonzalez placed third in the county-wide competition and was recognized by School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman at a

school board meeting, along with $100 award for his art piece. Gonzalez was also recognized for the aforementioned award at the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Governing Board meeting in late April at the Stephen P. Clark Center.

School hosted its annual Gator Idol singing competition to raise awareness and to collect donations for the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes is an organization that helps mothers have healthy pregnancies and helps babies have happy and healthy lives. Students performed in front of a live audience and were judged on their overall performance by three judges: Patricia Hachar from Think Famous Productions, Javid

Kiwanis of Greater Miami Lakes. At the end of the show, the top three singers were announced and awarded with trophies. Alexandria Canto took home the honor of first place, Tanis Perez took second place, and Kehvani Hicks won third place. Through ticket sales, donations, concession stand profits, and the club’s own generous donations, the club raised over $1000 for The March of Dimes.
