A Look Inside:

The Roberto Alonso family, The Graham Companies and Dolphins Cycling Challenge are looking forward to the 2016 classic car event to raise money for cancer research for the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in memory of former Miami Lakes vice mayor Roberto Alonso Sr. More than 1,000 people turned out for the April 19 event on Main Street, where 170 classic cars, including a 1941 Chrysler, 2015 Corvette Mustang and Alonso’s 1964 Chevy Coupe Super Sports car, were on display. “The classic car show was a huge success and we want to thank the residents of Miami Lakes for participating,” said Roberto Alonso Jr. “The event is for a great cause, raising money for cancer research to find a cure and honor cancer patients, who are battling the deadly disease and cancer survivors. We appreciate that everyone came out and showed their

Roberto Alonso honored during ‘Cars for a Cure’ (Continued from Page 1) food under tents at next year’s event, similar to the Taste of Miami Lakes.

Roberto Alonso Senior, who died from cancer in 2013, created the town’s annual Classic Car Show.

Following his death, his friends reached out to his son to keep his memory alive by resuming the event in his name, but he decided to turn it into a fund-raiser for cancer research. He teamed up with The Graham Companies and Dolphins Cycling Challenge for the event in memory of his father, who was a fixture in the Miami Lakes community for years.

He was an original council member for Miami Lakes and the town’s first vice mayor. He was second in command for four consecutive terms. Alonso was the face of Royal Oaks, an upscale and bedroom community that is protected by guard gates and features some of the most beautiful homes in South Florida. After Miami Lakes incorporat-

ed in 2000, Alonso made Royal Oaks Park, 16500 N.W. 87th Avenue, his pet project, which was a tot-lot before he spearheaded an initiative to convert it to a fullfledged park and recreation area and a community center. The community center was renamed in his honor following his death.

On April 20, The Graham Companies hosted the 41st William “B” Graham Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting the South Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America, at Shula’s Golf Club. The winning team included Robert O. Saunooke, Esq. of Saunooke Law Firm, PA; Lonny Castino of Pompano Beach Golf Club; and Anthony Rick of Sports and Marketing Management. The winners each received a hand-made stained glass Cow trophy designed and crafted by Miami Lakes resident Ed Gansert, along with a Shula’s Golf Club championship golf bag. Miami Lakes AutoMall returned as the Hole-in-One Sponsor, and the 2015 Camaro R/S Convertible missed going to a lucky golfer by just 14 inches. This year’s tournament raised more than $29,000 for the benefit of the Boy Scouts South Florida Council, which serves over 40,000

youth in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Last year, Cub Scouts (ages 610), Boy Scouts (ages 11-17), and Sea Scouts/Venturers (co-ed ages 14-20), contributed more than 205,000 community service hours for charitable and municipal caus-

es and projects. The Graham Companies expressed its appreciation to all of the sponsors whose commitment to support scouting and this golf tournament has made the event an ongoing success for over 41 years.

Three generations of pianists raise funds for Alzheimers during May 9 Shula’s concert By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff On Saturday, May 9, Generations Piano Studio will give a special Mother’s Day tribute to piano teacher and former studio owner, Ileana Merino, affectionately known as “Nana,” by hosting the first piano PracticeA-Thon called #baNANApianorama. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Don Shula’s Hotel lobby, 6842 Main Street, current and former students, family and friends will be playing the piano to raise funds to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association in Merino’s name. Jessica Comellas was taught to play piano on the lap of her grandmother, Ileana “Nana” Merino, a classically trained pianist hailing from Cuba. Merino also taught her daughter, Comellas’s mother, Maria Merino Comellas, along with countless other students as part of a storied 50 year teaching career. In 2012 Merino was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, which forced her into retirement from the teaching studio she started many

years ago now headed by Jessica Comellas. Under the instruction of Jessica, the studio became known as Generations Piano Studio, an homage to the musical matriarchal generations that led to its inception and continued teaching and “to honor the one who started it all,” said Jessica. Merino’s diagnosis inspired Jessica to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association’s event called The Longest Day. Held annually on the Summer Solstice, the duration of the sunrise-to-sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. As part of the Merino-Comellas Longest Day event, they will be doing what they do best – playing piano. The #baNANApianorama event welcomes all to join in listening, donating and celebrating Merino’s career and legacy. To donate to the #baNANApianorama team, visit https://act.alz.org/goto/baNANAp ianorama.

Miami Lakes Relay for Life set for Saturday, May 2, at Optimist Park The Town of Miami Lakes and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to host the Relay For Life of Miami Lakes, a community event, where teams form, raise money and walk through the night, while enjoying D.J. entertainment, food and fun with friends and family. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 2 from noon to midnight at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. The Opening Ceremony and Survivor Celebration will be held during the evening of the Relay For Life event. The event is a time to remember loved ones lost, and celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. The day will be filled with exciting activities such as bounce houses, pony rides, a mechanical bull, live concerts and more. Miami Lakes expressed its appreciation to several local businesses and organizations who are supporting the Relay for Life. They include The Graham Companies, Misha’s Cupcakes, Casavana Restaurant, Y100 Miami, MY93.9, Miami Cancer Institute of Baptist Health South Florida, and the Center for Advanced Surgical Oncology at Palmetto General Hospital. The 2015 event chair is Gloria Garcia who has many years of participating and serving on the committee of the Relay For Life of Miami Lakes. “The theme of the relay this year is ‘MOOVING For A Cure’ in tune with the history of Miami Lakes. Our community has

always generously supported the fight against cancer, and I have no doubt that this event will raise awareness and serve to honor those who have courageously fought against cancer and remember those unfortunately are not longer with us,” said Garcia. “Our teams are comprised of amazing individuals who, like me,

have been impacted with either the loss of a loved one or know someone affected by cancer. It is wonderful to see them giving back as a community and coming together to an excellent cause,” said Garcia. To join the community in the fight against cancer call 305-7792843 or visit www.RelayForLife. org/MiamiLakesfl.

Ben & Jerry’s franchise opens in Royal Oaks Center By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Sweet tooth customers that enter the new Ben & Jerry’s location at 15484 N.W. 77 Court in the Royal Oaks Shopping Center are immediately greeted by a massive mural depicting two guayaberaclad cows sipping on their cafecito and enjoying some ice cream near the Miami Beach skyline. The mural speaks volumes about the easy assimilation into the community that owners Marcela and Ivan Kozupytsya have made following their grand opening of Miami Lakes’ newest ice cream shop. The Kozupytsyas stumbled onto Miami Lakes while researching locations for their first franchise. Ivan had seen the Royal Oaks Shopping Center online and while it didn’t appear much different from other areas they had scouted he was mysteriously drawn to it. He abruptly ended his online research and hit the road at midnight to see the shopping center in person. “Even at that time there were families out, walking and hanging out. Miami Lakes is a very familyoriented community which is exactly what we wanted. It was perfect,” said Ivan. More than searching for a family-oriented community, the Kozupytsyas were looking for a place to be involved. In the several months since Ben & Jerry’s opened its doors, the shop has participated in funding campaigns for local schools, Marcela has joined the Miami Lakes Youth Activities

Task Force, and most recently the shop was awarded an Appreciation Award by Senator Bob Graham for contributions and fundraising for Bob Graham Education Center. “It’s really not like work, this doesn’t feel like we are working, this is just our life,” said Marcela. Both Marcela and Ivan understand what it’s like to go to a workplace that feels like work. They have roots in suit-and-tie business environments, Marcela previously working as a financial advisor for eight years and Ivan as an attorney. Neither were able to find the creative fulfillment they craved within the confines of their previous professions so they sought out entrepreneurship in the sweetest business they could find. “I loved my job. I learned a lot but it wasn’t me,” said Marcela. “Ivan’s father and my father were both entrepreneurs, so we always knew we would want to do the same and open our own business, we just didn’t know it would be ice cream,” said Marcela. Ivan returned to school after working as an attorney and earned his Master’s in marketing. It was there that he completed a thesis on Ben & Jerry’s branding and soon thereafter found himself steeped in ice cream. “I come from a history of eating a lot of ice cream. A lot,” said Ivan. “And when you eat a lot of ice cream, you have to find the healthiest one. So after you research it, you find that Ben & Jerry’s really is the best.” Among the exhaustive list of flavors created by “flavor gurus”

at Ben & Jerry’s headquarters in Vermont, Marcela’s favorite is Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch. Ivan’s favorite flavor is Tonight Dough by Jimmy Fallon, a love that extends into decoration as customers will find Jimmy Fallon’s smiling unbodied head floating among clouds in the shop’s colorful restroom. During the March 6 ribbon cutting event, Mayor Wayne Slaton tried the Wayne’s Swirl flavor, a play on words for the famous 90’s film Wayne’s World. The ice cream shop has proven to be irresistible even to those leaving the nearby gym who slip into the shop and whisper to the Ben and Jerry’s staff “You never saw me here.” The shop recently held a free scoop event on April 14 which boasted a line wrapping around the shopping center from the shop to Winn Dixie. A total of 4,293 scoops were scooped that day from 1 to 8 p.m. while the shop’s mascot, Woody the Cow, danced on the countertops. Another 250 free cones will be given on Mother’s Day, May 9, at the town’s “Paint A Picture For Mom” event at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West. Flavors are offered in cones, pints, ice cream cakes and most recently in the form of a burrito (“brrr-ito”), a crepe stuffed with two flavors and toppings. Town Council accepts Graham Co.’s Par 3 donation By the Miami Laker staff Acting on the recommendation by the Miami Lakes Par 3 Committee to take over some land that’s part of a golf course, the Miami Lakes Town Council approved a resolution to acquire the property and convert it to a passive park. The Miami Lakes Par 3 Committee, which was formed in 2013 in an initiative by Councilmember Frank Mingo to study the pros and cons of the property abutting the golf course at Don Shula’s Golf Club, concluded

that the tract should only be used for a nature park. At the April 14 regular Town Council meeting, lawmakers accepted the land donated by The Graham Companies, which agreed to pay for an environmental assessment, a boundary survey and a provision of grounds maintenance of the property for two years. The town also agreed on the terms of the donation, the process of development, the conceptual plan for the park and a tentative timetable for future development.

JetStream Credit Union names Millie Coipel as new Business Loan Consultant JetStream Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Miami Lakes, announced the appointment of Millie Coipel as its new Business Loan Consultant. Coipel has over 20 years of experience in loan origination and finance including residential and commercial business loans. Prior to joining JetStream, Coipel was a Senior Loan Officer for Interamerican Bank and an Asset Manager for Bayview Financial prior to that. Coipel’s main focus will be originating new business relationships with JetStream’s current membership as well as businesses in Miami-Dade County. She will be working with local small business owners and assisting them to successfully build their business.

The Par 3 Committee outlined the rules and regulations for usage of the outdoor facility, which is only open to Miami Lakes residents for passive recreational activities such as pedestrian hiking and jogging; serves as a features and historical cultural or archeological attraction; does not allow organized competitive sporting activities; and the land is maintained in its current topography. The Par 3 Committee’s final recommendation was that the council shouldn’t vote on the design of the passive park until discussing blueprints with residents during a workshop, including members of the committee. “I want to thank the Par 3 Committee for all their efforts, positive input and hard work during the committee meetings,” Mingo said. “I agree with the consensus reached by them that the acquisition of this golf course should only be used for a passive park.” In other Council actions: • Council members, on first reading, passed an ordinance to update the town’s comprehensive plan for water supply plan amendments to be sent and reviewed by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and other review agencies. • Lawmakers, on first reading, approved an ordinance to amend the town’s budget for 2014-2015, general fund for a total of $400,00 from the unassigned fund balance, allocating $200,000 for legal services and another $200,000 to establish a non-departmental reserve for the council to fund new

initiatives throughout the remaining of the fiscal year. • Councilmembers approved a resolution to create a special taxing district for Lake Hilda lake maintenance services done by Miami-Dade Public Works and Waste Management. • Lawmakers approved a resolution for a zoning application of a conditional use for a sleep testing facility at 16420 N.W. 59th Avenue. • Councilmembers approved a resolution to waive the town’s competitive bidding procedure and offer contracts to the City of Hialeah for maintenance of the town’s bus and MV Transportation for operating bus and on-demand services, instead of renewing its covenant with Limousines of South Florida. • Councilmembers approved a resolution to formally establish the Veterans Affairs Committee, which was previously an ad-hoc committee since 2008. The committee created the town’s veteran’s memorial outside

Town Hall. • Councilmembers approved Councilmember Tony Lama’s plan for Miami Lakes to host a Realtor Forum, where area real estate agents would be invited to take part and provide their input on the town on what potential buyers are seeking when they visit Miami Lakes. • Town Manager Alex Rey said Miami-Dade County is set to review bids for vendors who are willing to use some space west of Opa Locka Airport for a storage yard for residents’ boats and other watercraft. Rey said the county received some bids but had to return them unsealed because of a minor legal mistake made in the description of the land. He said a vendor should be in place in the next several weeks. Vice Mayor Manny Cid, who’s spearheading the initiative, said at least 30 Miami Lakes residents expressed interest in storing their boats at the location once it’s ready for business.

By Stephanie Brito Special to The Miami Laker When a flight attendant on Flight #1514 from Washington, D.C. to Chicago went on the P.A. and asked, “Are there any medical personnel on board?” It was not a well-seasoned doctor in his late 50’s that got up. Instead, Nicole Rosello, 17, rushed out of her seat to help. Rosello, a senior in the Health Academy at Miami Lakes Educational Center, is a Certified Nursing Assistant and a Student Practical Nurse. She was on her way home from a five day Junior State of America (JSA) convention in Washington, D.C. when she got the opportunity to apply the nursing skills that she learned in high school in a real life scenario. When Rosello arrived to the back of the plane, a woman in her early 60’s was laying on the floor, passed out on one of the flight attendant’s laps. Rosello recorded the woman’s vitals.

“I jumped into nurse mode and began to assess her, beginning with her pulse, the temperature of her skin, and checked her pupils. I noticed everything seemed to be in order,” said Rosello. Her breathing was slow, but steady. Rosello sat with the woman, observing her vitals, until the woman awoke. After the woman, who said she was taking strong medications, was strong enough to stand up, Rosello escorted her to her seat and recorded her blood pressure and pulse again. Everything still seemed to be in order. “She later reported that she was experiencing diarrhea and I thought to myself dehydration, with strong medication, may lead

to fatigue and syncope,” said Rosello. Half an hour later, Rosello gave the woman something to drink and recorded her vitals again. The woman was stable until landing, where she was escorted to a local hospital by paramedics. Coincidentally, on the same trip, at Chicago Midway International Airport, Rosello came across another person who needed medical attention. This time, it was a woman who fell, hit her head and started bleeding. Rosello stopped the bleeding and ran to the gate for her next flight to Miami. It’s not the first time that Rosello has had to jump into action to care for a patient. “I have a desire to help others,” she said. “I almost missed my flight home, but I couldn’t leave knowing that there was someone who needed my help.”

NICOLE ROSELLO Rosello is graduating from Miami Lakes Educational Center this June and plans to major in Psychology and Neurobiology.

Theatre Review:

M.L. Chamber welcomes God of Carnage at Main St. Playhouse psychologist Susana Blanco By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff God of Carnage, written by Yasmina Reza and directed by Main Street Players Artistic Director, Robert Coppel, proves that carnage does not solely refer to physical brutality and weaponry. Words are just as mighty. When two couples, Alan and Annette Raleigh and Veronica and Michael Novak, meet to discuss the tussle between their sons Benjamin Raleigh and Henry Novak in the schoolyard, the result is nothing short of verbal carnage. What begins as a polite placation in the face of awkward and tense circumstances quickly unravels to name calling, blame, and behavior that overwhelms the very schoolyard fight that brought the parents there. The setting, the Novak home decorated with African elements, and the loud drumming introduction that plays overhead gives the audience clues that this confrontation is more than just a discussion – it’s war. Against who? It’s anyone’s guess. Blows and punches are thrown every which way and a battle of unified parents turns into a battle of the sexes revealing the fractures in each marriage. Alan, played by Manny Catalino, cuts conversation with his work cell phone glued to his ear, and his wife Annette, played by Christine LaRochelle, though

Softball ace Alexis Castroman signs with St. Thomas By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Unlike most student-athletes who signed their letter of intent at school, American High’s star pitcher Alexis Castroman chose to commit to a Florida university where she launched her softball career at the tender age of 7. Flanked her parents, coaches and friends at field No. 3 at Miami Lakes Optimist Park, Alexis chose to attend St. Thomas University, taking her pitching talent to a team that has won the highly competitive Sun Belt Conference championship, and is ranked in the NAIA top 20. She plans to study sports management when she enrolls at the university this fall. Alexis, who was recruited by a host of colleges and universities, chose to be a Bobcat to be closer to home, and the school matched her academic needs. Alexis’ signing was bitter sweet because it took place at the park where she played for the past 12 years, and became a star pitcher

for the Miami Lakes Optimist Club. She initially played recreational softball at Miami Lakes Optimist Park when she was seven-yearsold, and she began playing travel ball with the Miami Lakes Heat All-Star Team at the age of 8. Her father, Alex Castroman, is the head coach of the Heat team. “We couldn’t be prouder,” said Castroman, along with Alexis’ mother Ivette and her sister Erika. “Can you imagine? Weekend after weekend, from the age of 8, sometimes waking up at 5:30 a.m. to travel to different tournaments, all over the state of Florida. All the sacrifices, back-to-back games, scratches and bruises, all worth while, which shows how hard work and dedication does pay off. We look forward to seeing Alexis play at St. Thomas University.” Alexis, a Miami-Herald Second Team member her freshmen and junior year, will graduate from high school in June at the top of her class, where she has been coached by Sergio Fernandez and

his two sons, David and Daniel, and Kayel Guillen. Fernandez, American’s coach for five years and winner of the district championship on several occasions, coached his sons who played in the T-Ball through the Pony leagues at the Optimist Club. “This proves time after time, that our program has been a good program,” said Castroman, who’s also the Optimist Club’s softball commissioner. “We have had over 20 girls move on to play softball all over the state, many of them receiving scholarships to attend excellent universities.” Alexis has an impressive highschool career. She recorded a 53-23 record, 2.70 ERA and 248 strikeouts with a .485 batting average. Castroman said the Optimist Club helped prepare his daughter to play on a bigger stage in high school. “We have seen plenty of coaches stick it out until the end to make a difference at Miami Lakes Optimist,” he said. “Our program emphasizes teaching, sportsmanship and playing the game. It’s never only been about winning trophies, even though over the years, Alexis’ travel team did win six first place and three second place championships. However, for Alexis, it’s been more about the friendships and memories made along the way.” Said Alexis: “I had a great softball career and had the honor of meeting and playing with so many tremendous teammates. I am thankful for my teammates and coaches.”

Here we grow again!

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan has called a meeting to inform her District One residents about upcoming changes for new development and water and sewer projects in the county’s pipeline. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 6, at Joella C. Good Elementary School, 6350 N.W. 188 Terrace. Jordan is encouraging her constituents to attend the meeting to learn more about economic development initiatives, infrastructure projects, transportation and roadway improvements, public safety and code enforcement. Residents will also learn how to gain access to a host of county resources. “I’m sure that residents have been reading about the proposed film studio, mega mall and infrastructure initiatives in northwest Miami-Dade County, said Jordan. “This is an opportunity for them to have their questions addressed without going downtown and standing before the entire County Commission. I’m hoping that residents will be encouraged by these new developments since they will spur economic development in our area. For more information regarding the community meeting, call 305-474-3011.

Mater Lakes Academy girls’ JV soccer team reaches title game in first season of play In their inaugural season, the Mater Lakes Academy girls’ junior varsity soccer team reached the Charter Schools League Championship game, but lost to Doral Academy, 5-1, a team they had beaten during the regular season The girls finished the season 7-4. Head coach Robert Vidal said his team is made up of mostly middle school students who played well throughout the season. “We came such a long way when no one gave us a shot,” he said. “We won the semifinal game and made it to the championship game. That was a great accomplishment for the girls.” Vidal said his team got off to a slow start in the regular season but turned it around, including a 7-0 shutout victory over Doral Academy.

Before the game, he told his team he would buy them pizza if they won. “I ended up spending $100 for pizza,” Vidal quipped. “But it was well worth it.” Vidal said his players are the best local soccer team assembled. Team captain Daniella Martinez, an 8th-grade student, Geraldine Velasco, who’s also in the eighth grade, and 7th-grader Ingrid Pagan are the backbone of the team. And so are Vanessa Rodriguez, who was the team’s leading scorer at three goals per game, and Hailey Vidal, the coach’s daughter. Robert Vidal said his team lives by one motto. “We are all we got,” he said. “No one gave us a chance but we found our way and fought to get to the championship game.”

Summary of local high school baseball and softball playoffs Two Miami Lakes area high school baseball teams won their respective district championships last week and are heading to the regional playoffs. The American High baseball team won a double header to claim the 16-7A championship, first beating North Miami Beach and Westland Hialeah to advance to the regional quarterfinal. The Patriots shut out the Chargers, 160, and took care of Westland Hialeah. American’s game with the Chargers was scheduled for Thursday but the game was canceled due to the rain. American, the defending state champions, will host the first round of the regional playoffs this week and play the loser of the St. Thomas Aquinas and Southeast Nova matchup. Barbara Goleman Senior High defeated Miami Springs, 2-1, to win the district championship last week at Florida Memorial University. Both teams advanced to the regional playoffs with Goleman facing Mater Lakes Academy this week. Mater Lakes defeated Pace High, 1-0, in the district semifinal game last week. In local softball action, American High advanced to the

Region 4-7A semifinal game by clobbering South Broward, 12-0, and setting up showdown with defending state champion St. Thomas Aquinas. The champs hosted American on April 28 for the right to play for the regional championship and advance to the state quarterfinal. Against South Broward, American was declared the winner in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule, recording 14 hits and seven runs in the first two innings. Doral clobbered Barbara Goleman’s softball team, 15-0, in the 4-6A quarterfinal, and the game was called in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule. Doral gets its rematch against Pembroke Pines Charter, a team that beat them in last year’s regional final. Flanagan defeated Hialeah Gardens, 14-2, in the Region 4-8A quarterfinal game. In local basketball news, Pace High point guard C.J. Fisher earned first team honors when Source Hoops/FABC released its All-State teams for Class 3A and 4A. Fisher earned the spot on the Class 4A team. Last month, Fisher made The Miami Herald All-Dade First Team after averaging 29 points, six rebounds and five assists per game this season.

Four Goleman High athletes sign letters of intent By Kaitlin Castillo Special to The Miami Laker On April 20, four seniors, surrounded by family, friends and teammates, from Barbara Goleman Senior High School, made their commitment to play their sport of choice at their future college at a ceremonial presentation in the office of principal Joaquin Hernandez. “It is a beautiful and great day at Barbara Goleman,” said Hernandez. “This truly emphasizes the term ‘student athlete’ and shines light on all the accomplishments they have achieved during their high school career.” Senior softball center fielder Jessica Costero signed her commitment to play at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta where she received an academic scholarship to study Pre-Med. Costero has been playing since she was five-years-old and was inspired by both her older and younger sisters who also share her passion for softball. “Agnes Scott is my dream school,” she said. “I discovered the college in middle school and knew I wanted to go there ever since.” Her parents, Raul and Sam Costero, could not be more proud of their daughter and the opportunities the school provides, both in the academic and athletic realm. Her father served as one of her

coaches. “It was difficult coaching her sometimes; you’re always harder on your own kids but I always knew she was going to do awesome,” her father said. “I always knew she was going to be a college athlete and continue doing what she loves. I couldn’t be more grateful for Goleman head coach Orlando Barreda and the school for everything they have done for my daughter.” Goleman’s running back and linebacker Troy Myers is taking his talents to Friends University in Kansas. He has been playing football since he was 10-years-old and wishes to pursue sports therapy. Myers expressed how Friends University is the best school for him, and he’s excited to be going there in the fall. His parents, Satrina Dorsey and Julian Watson, were extremely happy to see the level of success their son has reached. “I might cry,” said Dorsey. “I’m going to be sad to see him leave but he is so dedicated to football that I know it will be the best for him.” Goleman’s ace pitcher Ricardo Garcia will be attending Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Worthington, Minnesota. Baseball has always been a part

of his life, as he watched his older brother play the sport since he was a child. “I love being a pitcher,” he said. “I feel as though I have control over the game at that position. I have been playing the sport since I was four years old and the school is a great place of opportunity.” His mother, Jacqueline Alonso, gushed, “I am ecstatic; I know he’s going to go even further. I have always told him it is all about the right place and the right time and about wanting. It is always his choice and I am beyond words that he is able to follow his dreams.” Goleman’s other ace pitcher Michael Pelaez will be attending the Community College Baltimore in Maryland, where he is planning to study sports management. Pelaez has been playing baseball since he was four and dreams of playing for the Boston Red Sox. His parents, Mario and Barbara Pelaez, were beyond thrilled and overwhelmed with emotions as their son signed his scholarship papers. “There are so many emotions going on right now,” his mother said. “We are excited but sad to see him leave. We are overall very proud and happy for him, though. We always knew he would want to continue playing throughout college and we are blessed he was able to do so.”

It has been future endeavors as they purse truly incredible from start to fin- their passions to the next level.”

Pace High’s drama students end year with Hairspray By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker With a rousing production of the classic musical Oklahoma! back in January, students in Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s drama program were looking forward to putting on a modern musical classic: Hairspray.

“It was their dream show for a lot of them,” said Christina PlaGuzman, Lead Teacher of Pace’s Academy for Visual and Performing Arts Theatre Program. “Them wanting to do it so much made me want to do it even more.” While preparing to compete at the 2015 Florida State Thespian Festival, where they won multiple

Miami-Dade Public Schools eliminate EOC tests for 2015 By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) has eliminated the End Of Course (EOC) examinations that were scheduled to take place at the end of the 2015 school year for all Miami-Dade students. The EOC exams, which were previously used for decisions on student promotion, retention, graduation and teacher evaluation, will only be administered to a small testing group of students randomly selected from MiamiDade County middle and senior high schools. Additionally, field tests will only include 10 of the original 263 combined middle and high school EOC exam topics. No field tests will be administered to elementary school students. This news comes on the heels of a new state law, HB7096, which allows for flexibility in administering testing in regards to academic achievement.

According to a press release by MDCPS, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said, “Today’s announcement should come as welcomed news to everyone who recognizes that too much testing deprives our students of valuable instruction time. In making these decisions, we’ve taken a logical and responsible approach to address the concerns of students, teachers and parents.” Carvalho broke the news on Thursday, April 23, during a General Obligation Bond groundbreaking event at Oak Grove Elementary School in Miami. The Superintendent and School Board Chair, Perla Tabares Hantman, were joined by the United Teachers of Dade (UTD) and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA/PTSA) who Carvalho said on his Facebook page “were instrumental in voicing the concerns from students, parents and teachers.”

awards, accolades, and scholarships, nearly 100 Pace Drama students worked four months on rehearsals and over 100 hours building sets. On April 21, Hairspray finally opened for a three-night run with a packed and raucous crowd inside Pace’s Spartan Center. “Director Pla-Guzman does a great job with the kids,” said Pat Kunkel, who attended the opening night performance. “As someone who has seen many of her productions, I’m amazed at how the kids

always give 150 percent.” As part of Pace Drama’s community outreach, Pla-Guzman arranged a special performance on the morning of April 23 for a very enthusiastic crowd of over 300 middle school students from Our Lady of the Lakes, St. John the Apostle, and Annunciation Catholic Schools. The audience was even more excited to see several cast members who had graduated from their middle schools. Hairspray has also been bittersweet for Pla-Guzman and the

Pace Drama program, as it is the final production for 30 seniors on both the cast and crew, the biggest graduating class in the program’s history. “It’s a chapter that’s ending. It’s scary and sad and I’m going to miss them a lot,” said PlaGuzman. This year also saw the biggest ever group of freshman entering the program, which ensures that Pace Drama will continue to entertain and inspire for years to come.

Hialeah Miami Lakes’ Mu Alpha Theta Club celebrates Pi Day

MU ALPHA THETA math club members and math teachers gathered to celebrate Pi day, complete with activities for students, and of course, pie.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School’s (HML) Mu Alpha Theta club celebrated Pi Day, a date that was celebrated around the world on March 14. The date, 3/14/15, formed the first five numbers of the mathematical symbol Pi that represents the ratio of circumference of a circle to its diameter, 3.14159. The event, hosted by the Mu Alpha Theta sponsor, Marielena Viciedo, the Math Department head, Madeline Domenech and math department teachers, was

held in the school gymnasium and featured a variety of Pi related activities. The Mu Alpha Theta team and all participants had six different stations to visit which included building a bridge, an egg relay race, a bean count, and calculating areas for area and volume of three dimensional figures, finding the value of pi using circular figures, and determining if different sized circles cover the same area in a

She was named the Trustee Scholar by the Board of Trustees at the college. Each year, the Ringling College Board of Trustees awards its highest honor, the Trustee Scholarship, to an exclusive group of extraordinary rising seniors. The hard work, talent, spirit, and dedication of the 12 award recipients exemplify excellence. Life. The Board of Trustees' Trustee Scholar Selection Committee, led this year by Trustee Larry Garberding, reviews each student's submission materials and portfolio, makes their selection, and recommends the appointment of scholars to the entire Board of Trustees based on exceptional talent, contribution to the department, and leadership ability. Fernandez has earned other prestigious titles during her academic career. She placed third in the nation for the Geico National Safety Contest while attending third grade at Miami Lakes K-8 Center, formerly Miami Lakes Elementary. The award earned the school $500 worth of art supplies. She also went on to win first place in the state for the Stock Market Challenge in fifth grade. While attending Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC), Fernandez won the Ocean Bank Art exhibition award, the Silver Knight for Art and helped create a lasting mural for the school. She graduated from MLEC in 2012 Summa Cum Laude and was accepted to FSU, UF, UCF and

Ringling College of Art & Design with multiple scholarships. She chose Ringling College of Art & Design, because she wanted to be among the best artists and designers from the world. Fernandez said, “In order to be the best, you need to be challenged by the best. I have to credit my parents for allowing me to pursue my passion in Motion Design. They have been my biggest supporters and by allowing me to spread my wings, I have been able to soar.” Fernandez has been the graphic designer for Teen USA Magazine and has worked on special projects for the Orioles, Boyce Avenue, Nike and TV Land among others.

Her film “Famous Felines” won second place at the Sarasota Film Festival in 2014. “When I first heard that I was nominated for the Trustee Scholar and selected as a winner, I was in shock. There are so many talented students and to be named the best of the best is truly an honor. I am really humbled and thankful to the Board of Trustees on selecting me for this prestigious honor,” said Fernandez. “I will never forget the first time I walked by the Trustee Scholar Wall with my parents during freshman year. I admired them all and now I will be among them. The feeling is surreal. I know I am where I belong.”

M.L. Congregational Church hosts Mother’s Day Spring Tea

Monsignor Edward Pace High School students piled into the school’s Innovation Center recently to watch and perform at the annual Open Mic Night hosted by Pace High’s Literary Guild. Emceed by senior Justin Gerlin and overseen by Literary Guild moderator and Pace English teacher Katherine Palacio, the unique event provided a platform for Pace students to sing, read their own written poetry, perform standup comedy and spoken word, and play instruments. Refreshments were served and sold by Pace Campus Minister Andres Novela and his Just.Ice.Coffee which benefits Pace High’s Haitian sister schools. Some highlights included senior Kenea Sejour bringing the house down multiple times with several songs and junior Gabriela Gutierrez performing a piece on the violin. Before performing an improvised jazz session on the guitar, senior Frank de Oliva spoke from the heart, stating “I hope that everybody learns how to be selfconfident…Just be confident in yourself and just be yourself.” The Literary Guild was thrilled with this year’s well-attended event and looks forward to holding Open Mic Night again next year.
