This year, with their new head coach, Aisha Davis, the Bobcat Cheerleaders continue that winning momentum by opening up the cheer season with a first place ranking in their division at the Regional Cheer Competition on February 8, at the Elite Bash Cheer Competition. “I am proud of the hard work that these exceptional athletes have put in this season. storied past working in healthcare before opening her center. Initially working as a Speech Language Pathologist for children with Autism, Down Syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy, Alonso decided to follow a different avenue within the health industry. She pursued a master’s degree in Health Services Administration while working at Mercy Hospital as an administrator for patient access for 13 years which is where she cites her passion with working with the elderly began. Following her degree she transitioned into case management for Simply Healthcare in the Long Term Care Department. Alonso found that families were often misguided about resources for the elderly and would sometimes leave their family members at home alone all day. She began to educate families on the benefits of day service centers and how they were surprisingly affordable. “I was on the other side of this while working in case management,” said Alonso. “I was helping families, visiting them and their elderly family members at homes and assessing how much assistance was needed which is when I first became familiar with adult day service centers and I fell in love with the idea of opening one myself.” Alonso was assigned to many long term caseloads for patients in Hialeah and Miami Lakes which is when she first saw the lack of adult service centers. Being long time residents, active within the town, Alonso and her husband knew immediately that the location for

their own adult day service center would ideally be in their home town – Miami Lakes. Alonso soon opened her own center and now offers services that many locals were driving far to receive in Broward and South Miami. “The town has a great seniors program but there was not much for the individuals who needed a bit more supervision,” said Roberto Alonso, Alexandra’s husband. “Here we can guarantee that they will be taken care of and supervised the entire time. It gives a lot of peace of mind for the families.” The center, which is highly supervised, complete with 24 hour cameras, doors with sounding alarms, and patient counts every hour, is also highly visible with floor to ceiling windows. Staff members have been handpicked by Alonso and are each bilingual with a minimum of 5 years experience working with the geriatric population. The center works with many different types of patients including those with Alzheimer’s and dementia, Parkinson’s, chronic diseases, stroke victims, frail and physically dependent, and depressed patients. Breakfast, lunch and a snack is provided and personalized medicine management is provided for each patient according to their needs. Hours for the center overlap with business hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The three key components of the center focus on physical, mental and social stimulation. As such, activity areas for physical therapy, exercise, reading, crafts, games,

ALWAYS AT YOUR SIDE ADULT DAY CARE is the only center of its kind in Miami Lakes and offers a host a unique services and features for patients and their caregivers. dining, relaxation and even a computer area for those interested in learning more about the web, are all part of services included. Also primary physicians and therapists for each patient conduct check-ups at the center so caregivers don’t need to take time to drive patients to appointments. Additionally, special events are often held to create an atmosphere closer to that of a social club than a facility. Some events and activities for patients include a holiday party, a dance instructor, and a beautician to cut hair and perform manicures. A local podiatrist, Dr. David Mai, also regularly visits to ensure foot health. Manny Cid, Miami Lakes Vice Mayor and vice president of Always At Your Side Adult Day Care Center said “This is one way for adults to improve their quality of life and avoid just staying at home all day with nothing to do. We have success stories here that are out of this world. I remember a gentleman who at first couldn’t move his arms, and over time I saw great improvement. He regained a lot of mobility in his arms and told me he felt like he was in his thirties again.” A feature unique to Always At

Your Side is its inclusion of young adults in activities and programs. Young adults who have conditions such as cerebral palsy are welcome to spend the day and partake in any activities, some of which have been designed specifically for individuals. “There is a big gap with children who grow up and out of government programs for things like cerebral palsy and suddenly they find they have nowhere to go,” said Roberto Alonso. “Sometimes those young adults in their 30’s and 40’s are left at home alone and so we have opened our doors for that population along with specific activities.” The center has a young adult with cerebral palsy that travels from South Miami to attend Always At Your Side as it is the only center that has allowed him to engage in his favorite pastime – painting. Alonso purchased canvases and paints to personalize that patient’s stay. For more information on Always At Your Side Adult Day Care Center, call 305-362-2202 or visit www.alwaysatyoursideadc. com. Growth at Keyes Realty leads to M. Street expansion By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff While most people and investors still believe the real estate market is struggling following the 2009 economic downturn, The Keyes Company is indicating otherwise. In fact, the Miami Lakes branch is expanding its office space with nearly 1,400 more square feet at two locations, 6816 and 6844 Main Street, as the company continues to grow while more sale associates who left the real estate industry are returning and seeking positions with Keyes. The real estate company will still keep its original office space, 6850 Main Street, as the Miami Lakes Realty and Welcome Center located in the lobby of Don Shula’s Hotel. Alex Ruiz, manager of The Keyes Company in Miami Lakes who runs the day-to-day operations, said the expansion is needed because the real estate market is growing strong again. “We are in a good position because in part the market is stabilizing,” Ruiz said during an inter-

view at his office. “Most people don’t know the real estate market is strong. It is growing and the market itself is growing more and more everyday because people are coming back to the real estate business.” Ruiz, who was born in Cuba and raised in Miami, said he plans to renovate the new location to accommodate the additional sale associates he is hiring, providing more space for offices, conference rooms and other areas for his real estate team to continue to provide the best services to their clients, buyers and sellers. Ruiz said as a company, Keyes, which has 35 offices in Florida, hired more than 1, 000 sales associates last year and he expects more growth this year, which is the reason his Miami Lakes branch is expanding. “Real estate has been growing in the last three years and it’s very profitable,” said Ruiz. “I feel comfortable about the economy and my goal is to hire more new associates in the business. That’s why I made the decision to expand the office in Miami Lakes.”

Rep. Diaz files bill to open teaching spots for experts State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., (R-Hialeah), chair of the Choice and Innovation Subcommittee of the Florida House of Representatives, is sponsoring a bill aimed that numerically ranks schools and allows Florida’s top schools the flexibility to hire experts in certain fields like history or science without prior certification. According to Diaz, HB 875 is to reward the top schools by bringing the brightest minds in specific fields to the classrooms. “We should continue to give parents and students choices with-

in our public schools,” Diaz said in a prepared statement. “We should encourage innovation instead of stifling our principals and administrators.” Another major component of the education bill would be the state’s Department of Education spending at least $1 million in liability insurance for instructional personnel. The Department would also begin publishing on its website its numerical rankings for schools beginning with the 2016-2017 school year.

Ruiz has been in the real estate business for 34 years. He got the opportunity to start his own mom-and-pop business and opened his own real estate company in 1989. “I got sales in my blood,” he said. Ruiz later sold his business to The Keyes Company, a familyowned business that was founded 80 years ago. He started managing the Miami Lakes branch in 2002 with 12 sales associates and his staff has grown to more than 90 today. “I run the branch like it was my own company,” Ruiz said. “We offer full service Real Estate, including insurance.” Unlike most real estate companies, The Keyes Company is open seven days a week. Ruiz said part of his success is the location of his branch. Located in the lobby of Don Shula’s Hotel and in the same vicinity as other restaurants, retail shops, cafes and a bakery, many patrons, potential clients and outside visitors visit his company requesting information on real estate, property values and directions to other town businesses. As the Welcome Center, The Keyes Company also hands out the town of Miami Lakes Dining Guide, town maps and real estate information, among other information people are seeking when visiting the town. “I have had so much success at this location,” Ruiz said. “Among all The Keyes offices, I have the best location.”

ALEX RUIZ, manager of The Keyes Company in Miami Lakes located in the lobby of Don Shula’s Hotel on Main Street. Ruiz said it is “very” important including people selling and buyfor his branch to uphold its reputa- ing homes, we handle all transaction as the best real estate compa- tions with honesty and integrity,” ny throughout the state of Florida. Ruiz said. “Our reputation is very “Dealing in big investments, important to the company.”

While Blanco’s expertise lies in working with couples and families, she also has extensive experience in working with individuals and groups with varying mental health and wellness concerns including selfesteem issues, anxiety, grief, trauma, anger management and more. “We both loved our work as academics but felt that it was time for us to return full-time to our roots as clinicians and further develop our private practice, jointly,” said Alvarez-Jimenez. “We know that together we make a very strong team and when we decided to leave academia to focus exclusively on clinical work in private practice, we instantly agreed that Miami Lakes is exactly where we both wanted to be.” Blanco said “What is exciting about being in the Town of Miami Lakes is that we both grew up in this area. Even though we did not know each other before pursuing our doctorate degrees, everything over the last several years has lined up perfectly for us to expand our private practice here. The Exonerated, a play reading, is set for March 13-14 at the Main Street Playhouse By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Exonerated, a play written by actors Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, will be presented as a play-reading at The Main Street Playhouse, on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14 at 8 p.m. The play is based on true stories of people who were sentenced and placed on death row before their exoneration. The stories are told like vignettes, each person explaining the details of how they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and wrongfully convicted. One of the cases covered is that of Sunny Jacobs and her boyfriend Jesse Tafero who were wrongfully convicted in the state of Florida for shooting an officer, a crime an acquaintance, Walter Rhodes, committed. Tafero and Jacobs were convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. Rhodes received three life sentences and was released early for good behavior. Tafero experienced a torturous botched electrocution on the electric chair after which Rhodes confessed Tafero and Jacobs were innocent. Robert Coppel will be directing and producing the play reading. He has a cast of performers including teachers, actors and attorneys. All the proceeds from the event will go to The Innocence Project, a non-profit legal clinic which only handles cases where post conviction DNA testing of evidence can yield conclusive

proof of innocence. “Since I’m a public defender, I thought it would be a good thing to bring attention to the fact that people are exonerated,” said Coppel. “It’s good for our theater to be socially conscious. Theaters should be able to stimulate through and educate, not just entertain.” Coppel will also be introducing legal members of the community to lead a panel on the death penalty to make way for stimulating discussion. After the performance on Friday night, attorneys Benjamin Waxman and Louis Jepeway will be representing the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and they will be joined by attorney Sarah A. Mourer, an associate professor for Clinical Legal Education at the University of Miami Law School and head of the University of Miami Law School Innocence Project and Death Penalty Clinic. Following Saturday’s performance attorney Edith Georgi, chief of the Capital Litigation Unit at the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office will be leading the panel discussion. Sponsors for the play reading include The Miami Chapter for The Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and The Greater Miami Chapter for the ACLU. Tickets are $10 and are available for purchase online at www.mainstreetplayers.com or at the door at The Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street.

Bob Graham’s Project Citizen News from the Town of Miami Lakes students tackle workforce Smart Sports program resumes April 1 issues for adults with autism Start Miami Lakes will once again children while teaching them the April 1 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Project Citizen students at Bob Graham Education Center are tackling an Autism issue that may pique the interest of local and state government officials. The seventh grade Project Citizen students, which is part of the school’s Law Studies class, discovered a problem among adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – about 75 percent of them are unemployed. The group interviewed a large group of people in the community about the issue and garnered feedback and identified the problem. The kids assembled a project called “Help Wanted for ASD” in hopes the local and state governments can resolve the issue with a public policy. The Project Citizen group will present their project at the district competition on Saturday, April 11 at Florida International University. According to student Emily Fernandez, the group commenced brainstorming problems and because her peers are closely related to someone with Autism, they researched the issue and discovered the lack of job opportunities for adults with ASD. She said the class attended a workshop on Autism at the school for parents and realized that there are many resources for children but not for adults. “We realized that in several years these children will have

grown into adults and have little support,” Fernandez said. The group discovered the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), which is a federal tax credit offered to employers for hiring people who constantly find it difficult landing jobs. The WOTC includes many groups like unemployed veterans, ex-felons and food stamp recipients but adults with ASD are excluded from the federal program. “We want to change the existing WOTC to include adults with ASD,” Fernandez said. “This will enable them to have better job opportunities. The group is planning to contact local government officials and state legislators as well as organizations in the community that can help bring awareness to the issue. “I feel this is government’s responsibility because they are the ones that dictate taxes and can make a change to include this in the existing Florida Work Opportunity Tax Credit,” Fernandez said. “I think the advantages are that we will see high functioning adults with Autism being able to get more jobs,” Emily said. BGEC Law Studies teacher Ingy Cruz said she is proud of her students for working so hard on the protect and caring for people with ASD. “They put in a lot of hours and came up with these amazing ideas,” she said.

host the popular Start Smart Sports Development Program. The 6-week program helps parents work one-on-one with their

basics of sports like throwing, catching, kicking and batting. Over the last several years, more than 100 children have participated in the program which prepares them for the world of organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Classes will be held on six consecutive Wednesdays beginning

Picnic Park West, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. Parents must attend each session with their child. Space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basic. Registration is available now by contacting Recreation Programs coordinator Kristina Labossiere at LabossiereK@ miamilakes-fl.gov, or 305-6989308.

Town collects ‘Read to Learn Free Books’ Town of Miami Lakes announced it is one of nine drop off sites for the Read to Learn Books for Free Program. Read to Learn Books for Free is part of a larger Read to Learn initiative launched by The Children’s Trust and the Center for Writing and Literature at Miami Dade College to increase the number of third graders who read at or above grade level.

Reading at grade level by the third grade is the leading indicator of school success and high school graduation, but currently nearly half of third graders fail to achieve this critical benchmark. To date, the initiative has distributed almost 200,000 books; however, the program’s main challenge has been keeping the flow of age-appropriate, donated books at adequate levels.

Residents are encouraged to donate gently used or new children’s books on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. inside Town Hall or at the Police Department office, which are both located at 6601 Main Street. To support Read to Learn Books for Free, contact Lissette.Mendez@mdc.edu, or call 305-237-3298.

Plated opens healthy food delivery center in M. Lakes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Plated is a company that is “changing the way America eats and reconnecting people to their food, one plate at a time.” Plated made its first food delivery in October 2012 in New York City and hasn’t slowed since. Over the last two years Plated has moved from a small operation in the Big Apple to locations nationwide which now includes Miami Lakes at 13964 N.W. 60 Avenue. Food is a passion for the creators and employees at Plated, and through meal deliveries the company has been able to offer food that is healthy, responsibly packaged, fresh and easy to make during a hectic schedule. Each delivery consists of a recipe and the exact pre-portioned ingredients for that recipe which are sent fresh and locally-sourced from one of the many partnered farms across the nation. Each meal

is planned and perfected by chefs at Plated’s headquarters and deliveries are done by subscription with a minimum of four plates per month which are chosen from the online menu. Plated exclusively sources antibiotic-free and hormone-free meats, 100 percent sustainable and domestic fish that is almost exclusively wild-caught, and fresh produce that is fresh and handpicked by local farmers. The deliveries are also made with biodegradable packaging and the company plans to be carbon-negative by June of this year. “Essentially, Plated changes the way people stock their refrigerators. People engage with fresh produce and high quality food.” said vice president of Operations, Robert Code. “We take a very holistic approach to everything we do. We are still shopping sources that are as responsible as possible and deliver with almost entirely recyclable products. All delivery

Miami Lakes Relay For Life set May 2 at Optimist Park to benefit American Cancer Soc. The Town of Miami Lakes and the American Cancer Society are teaming up once again to bring back the Relay For Life of Miami Lakes, a community event, where teams form, raise money and walk through the night, while enjoying DJ entertainment, food and fun with friends and family. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, from noon to midnight at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. The Opening Ceremony and Survivor Celebration will be held during the evening of the Relay For Life event. A kickoff party was held in early December at the Miami Lakes Ale House where the community and councilmembers came out to support and recruit teams. While teams are raising much needed funds, they also raise awareness of the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and patient support. This year, Gloria Garcia serves as Event Chair and has many years of participating and serving

on the committee of the Relay For Life of Miami Lakes. “It is an honor to serve as chair for the 2015 Relay For Life of Miami Lakes. The theme of the relay this year is ‘MOOVING For A Cure’ in tune with the history of Miami Lakes. Our community has always generously supported the fight against cancer, and I have no doubt that this event will raise awareness and serve to honor those who have courageously fought against cancer and remember those unfortunately are not longer with us,” said Garcia. “Our teams are comprised of amazing individuals who, like me, have been impacted with either the loss of a loved one or know someone affected by cancer. It is wonderful to see them giving back as a community and coming together to an excellent cause,” said Garcia. To join the community in the fight against cancer call 305-7792843 or visit www.RelayForLife. org/MiamiLakesfl.

American’s return to state baseball championship rests on arm of ace Romie Gonzalez with help from heavy hitters By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff For the American High Patriots, a return trip to the state title game to defend their championship rests on the arm of ace pitcher Romie Gonzalez. The University of Miami commit is off to good start and his stellar performance has all of his teammates on the same page. Head coach Ricky Gutierrez said he has a talented team (5-2) and his players are starting to gel well, especially following a disappointing defeat against Westminster. American led the game 5-0 but Westminster rallied and won 6-5. “We fell apart in that game,” Gutierrez said. “It was a tough and frustrating loss. We didn’t play our game. We had only four hits.” The Patriots bounced back last week against Southridge, beating the Spartans 6-3, in which Gutierrez said it was his team’s best game so far this season. “We played as a team that day,” he said. “They played with a lot of energy and that’s good to see early in the season.”

Gonzalez is the face of the team with a good supporting cast. “The team revolves around him,’ Gutierrez said. “He is our main guy.” Senior pitcher Mike Rodriguez said this year’s team is actually better than last season’s championship squad. “We are a better and completely different team,” said Rodriguez, who has allowed only three runs in 11 innings of work this season. “We should be fine.” Senior pitcher Danger Guevara said the talent on the team should take them far this season. “As a whole, we have deep talent from the first batter to the last batter,” he said. ‘Everybody does their own.” American’s heavy hitters are senior second baseman Johnny Jones and outfielders Victor Cabrera and Michael Montez. Despite a bulls eye on their backs for winning the state title last year, the Patriots remain focused on Fort Myers. “We are playing for one heartbeat and that’s to get back to Fort Myers,” said Gutierrez.

Former HML star Armando Allen returns as running backs coach By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Armando Allen is returning home to Hialeah Miami Lakes High School. The former Trojan standout and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears running back is the new running backs coach for his alma mater. Head coach Horane Allison told The Miami Laker that Allen will join his staff for the 2015 season. Allison said Allen will coach the Trojans’ top three running backs, Romeo Brown, Maliak Shannon and Maliak Burns, in hopes of strengthening the ground attack. “They can learn from his experience,” Allison said. Allen rose to fame at HML, rushing for 1,095 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns as junior despite missing three games due to an injury. Though he missed his entire senior season after fracturing his fibula in preseason, Allen chose to play at Notre Dame and started four games as a freshmen and recorded a team best 1,176 all-purpose yards and averaging 98 yards per game. He finished his college career with 2,144 rushing yards on 469 carries and scored eight touch-

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Alberto M. Carvalho, attended the 20142015 Student RoundTable event held at Barbara Goleman Senior High School in early February. A group of representative students from each Miami-Dade high school in the North Region were invited to attend the event and engage in a question and answer session with the superintendent. High schools represented at the event included Miami Norland, American, Hialeah Miami Lakes, North Miami Beach, Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College, Westland Hialeah, Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy, Hialeah Gardens, Miami Carol City, Barbara Goleman, Dr. Michael Krop, North Miami, Miami Beach, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning, MAST at FIU, and Hialeah. After Goleman principal Joaquin Hernandez and Goleman Senior Class president Alec Llerena welcomed the students and the Superintendent, Carvalho began the session with some personal history and background in

an effort for the students to see him beyond “the suit and tie.” A large portion of Carvalho’s history lies in his family roots and his love for education, topics that drive him to this day to continue improving education and the school system. “Your age group is called many things,” said Carvalho referring to the popular phrase “millenials.” “But I believe you are the enlightened generation. You are communicative and you are curious which is a formula that makes adults uncomfortable sometimes.” What followed was an intelligent discussion on the changes being made to the school system, the General Obligation bond, reaching past barriers for success, the importance of the arts within schools, and social media etiquette. Carvalho left the students with a word of advice: “When you climb the ladder of success, be careful. Look down so you don’t step on anyone on your way up. Look to the sides to always lift someone else up with you. And look up towards the place you are reaching for.”

HML’s Model United Nation students win awards By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High’s Model United Nations (UN) group attended the MiamiDade Model UN Conference on February 21 at Miami Dade College and was awarded the Secretary General’s Award for Outstanding High School out of approximately 30 competing high schools from Miami-Dade County. Additionally individual students were awarded in several categories, including Jessica Duque and Daniel Ramirez, Best Delegates in Historical Security Council; Marina Cepeda and Danny Hernandez, Best Delegates in Economic Commission for Latin American and the Carribean

(ECLAC); Savannah Kelly and Ashley Figueras, honorable mention distinctions as Lesotho in the General Assembly Committee. “Model UN is an educational simulation where students engage in stimulating debate while practicing diplomacy as well as research and writing skills,” said HML’s Model UN Faculty Advisor, Jennifer Murray. “In a world where we are becoming increasingly more globalized, it is extremely important to expose students to experiences that extend beyond local, state and nation borders. Moreover, as global citizens, students will interact with students and people from a variety of diverse backgrounds.” The school’s Model UN group,

which is open to all grade levels, takes part in simulated debates and trainings during meetings on how to utilize diplomatic strategies and write resolution papers in committee. Students are then assigned various country positions and convene for stimulating and effective

discussion on resolving global issues in the form of different themes at each competition. “As an educator it’s inspiring to see students who were at one point afraid to speak, stand in front of hundreds of peers and debate important global issues,” said

Murray. “Students learn from one another and engage in conversation with each other, parents and other educators about issues around the word. Model UN takes the theoretical and makes it more applicable and relevant in students every day lives.”

Goleman names Isabel Oheida its 2014 Teacher of the Year By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman Senior High School has named English teacher, Isabel Oheida, this year’s Teacher of the Year. Oheida, a Goleman alumna herself from the Class of 1998, was born and raised in Miami and from the time she was a child, knew her passion lay in teaching. “My favorite toy was always the chalkboard,” said Oheida. “I would play for hours on end with the chalkboard and books, along with my make-believe students. I would write on the board, give assignments, and assign lessons only the brightest of students would pick up on.” In addition to teaching, Oheida has always harbored interest for journalism, reading, and writing, passions that she was able to pursue along with her teaching as she now leads the journalism, yearbook and Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition classes at Goleman. Oheida graduated with a Bachelor of Science in English Education, a Master of Science in Reading Education and earned her Educational Specialist title in Educational Leadership all from Florida International University. “One of the most rewarding

memories I have is attending graduation each year and seeing my former 9th grade students walking on stage as adults, ready to conquer the world as young men and women. Knowing I had a little influence in making that happen fills me with joy,” said Oheida. In addition to her teaching, Oheida is the Language Arts Department chairperson, the Yearbook advisor, EESAC member, the Diamonds Baseball Team coach and sponsor of the Junior Class of 2016. “When Goleman first opened in 1995 it became my home and I consider it a blessing to not only have walked its halls as a student but to come back as a teacher,” said Oheida. “As I walk through the halls I remember all the memories I made as a student here and I often think of how much time has passed and how much I have changed. But then one constant that remains is my love for this school.”

HML’S MODEL UNITED NATION’S group earned the Secretary General’s award for Outstanding High Schol at the Miami-Dade Model UN Conference on February 21.

School Board oks Hantman initiatives Miami-Dade County School Board unanimously approved two items proposed by Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman at its regular meeting in early January. The items endorse the addition of schools to the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program and March 2015 as Arts in Our Schools’ Month. “The District’s goal is to provide SRTS improvements for all public schools. Since 2007, the School Board has endorsed and submitted 91 SRTS applications and funds totaling over $13.5 million have been awarded for necessary infrastructure improvements,” said Hantman.

The very next weekend at the American Cheer and Dance Academy’s Gold Coast Beach Blast on February 21, the Starlettes’ jazz routine was declared the Grand Champion performance and the girls took first place in the Jazz and HipHop categories. The Starlettes are not resting as they prepare for the National Dance Association National Competition from March 5 through 8.

Pace’s D’Andre Ragin named to Disney Dreamers Academy Pace High School freshman, D’Andre Ragin, was selected as one of the winners for the 2015 Disney Dreamers Academy Essay Contest. Ragin is one of only 100 high school students from across the United States chosen to attend the 2015 Disney Dreamers Academy at the Walt Disney World Resort from March 5 through 8. Working in conjunction with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE Magazine, the Disney Dreamers Academy is an educational experience devoted to fostering skills in a multitude of careers and connecting Dreamers with mentors. In addition to being a dual athlete for both the Pace Spartan varsity football team and varsity basketball team, Ragin plans to pursue a degree in business administration or law at either Stanford University, Duke University, or

D’ANDRE RAGIN the University of Miami. In his profile for the Disney Dreamers Academy website, Ragin credits his parents with teaching him the value of hard work when he was young and that he is “determined to achieve [his] goals in order to become a positive role model and to make [his] family and friends proud.”

Dade Christian band students earn highest honors at UM band festival Dade Christian band students, Tianna Palmer (12th grade) and Lucas Larvenz (11th grade) performed at the University of Miami Frost Honor Band Festival and were recognized for the highest caliber of honor band accomplishments. On February 14, the two students played under worldrenowned conductors alongside the most talented band students in South Florida, earning them the title of this week's extraordinary students. Palmer has been a member of the Dade Christian School band for 7 years and admits it has been a challenge to reach the highest point of her career. Coming from a family with no musical background, she discovered a passion for music she never knew she had while in the fifth grade. During the summer before her freshman year of high school, Palmer was invited to perform with Voyageurs International, a Colorado-based company organized to take American students and their musical talents to audiences abroad. She spent two and a half weeks touring Europe performing with other Music Ambassadors in France, England, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Palmer has also been invited to play with the South Florida Youth Symphony, District Honor Band, and now, the UM Honor Band. Palmer hopes to continue her musical studies in college, whether at Florida International University or Liberty University.

In the future, she envisions herself being part of an orchestra and composing music. This gifted young musician has already composed her first piano ballad and is currently working on a woodwind piece. Similar to Palmer’s story, Larvenz began playing the trumpet in the fifth grade. When asked how he decided on that particular instrument, he said, “The trumpet always has the main parts, and I knew I wanted to play something you would hear.” Never having been one to blend in, Larvenz knew from an early age he was interested in music. “My dad plays a bunch of instruments and the piano professionally. I always knew I wanted to play, and having to take Fine Arts in elementary was a great opportunity for me.” He has spent the past 6 years polishing his skills which

have earned him multiple Superior ratings at the Florida Bandmasters Association Solo and Ensemble, as well as several invitations to play with the District Honor Band the past three years. Now in his junior year of high school, Larvenz is considering colleges with the hopes of receiving a music scholarship and joining the college band. Ultimately, he would love to be a part of a film orchestra that records motion picture scores. It is amazing to witness how an elementary class requirement has brought out the God-given gifts and abilities these students have within them and enabled them to blossom into talented musicians. Dade Christian is proud to boast award winning Band and Choir programs made up of talented individuals like Palmer and Larvenz.

Larsh’s project was designed to target underserved children to allow for music enrichment and exposure. BIANCA LARSH Larsh’s collaboration with South Florida Youth Symphony allowed for a scholarship fund for those children interested in learning an instrument, so they could do so despite financial setbacks. “My favorite part of the project was to see the look on the children’s faces when they first realized they could play an instrument and then seeing them taking lessons at the symphony every weekend,” said Larsh.
