New look, new menu at renovated Shula’s Steak 2 By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff A woman clad in a black and white gingham button-up greets visitors at the doors of the newly renovated Shula’s Steak 2 Restaurant and Sports Bar located inside the Shula’s Hotel on Main Street. Having opened a week before Valentine’s Day, without any official marketing, the restaurant pulled in over 200 people for the evening, a high number compared to previous years. Renovations and updates have completely transformed the look and feel of Steak 2, and the project was one that kept in mind all the senses, from the music, to the lighting, and most especially - the food. About 35 percent of the previous lunch and dinner menus and about 75 percent of the wine and beer selections were updated. The cuisine has morphed from strictly traditional American into an amalgamation of high quality American cuisine with regional influence, reflective of the community the restaurant serves. “We’re known for our steaks and we are a sports restaurant. We needed a steak sandwich on the menu,” said Bruce Lawrence, general manager. The new menu incorporates a Latin flair from rice and beans as sides to the new “Cuban Reuben” steak sandwich. Some new starters and entrees are a roasted half chicken which is brined for 24 hours then roasted fresh every morning, the Shula Frita Burger which is made with sliced cantimpalo chorizo, and buffalo shrimp

prepared in the same way as chicken wings with a tangy taste. While typical sports bars are often as kitschy as they are familiar, Steak 2 strays from the typical and instead goes for a classy and comfortable atmosphere, one that took years to come to fruition with an intense attention to detail. Selection for the uniforms alone took months to decide, and the black and white historical photographs are hung inside bright silver frames that glint against the mood lighting. Exact replicas of Coach Shula’s two Superbowl trophies, only obtainable through authorization from Shula’s corporate entity and the NFL, are featured near the bar where guests often take photos beside them. The bar has also gone through some major changes, moving from offering 9 taps to 16, two of which are dedicated to a Cabernet and Pinot Grigio. The inclusion of wine on tap, a recent trend that allows customers to enjoy wine dispensed in the same way as draft beer, is one of the many details that has propelled Steak 2 far beyond what it once was. “The wine on tap is not a happy hour wine, and it’s also not a $60 dollar wine,” said Lawrence. “We wanted to make this an enjoyable but also an affordable experience so the wine on tap sells at $9 a glass and the beer we selected offers so much variety. We have different IPA’s and represent the region and abroad with beer from local breweries as well as beer from the West Coast.” Sangria is made from scratch and 10 of the 12 signature drinks

The meeting, held in partnership with County Commission chairman Esteban Bovo Jr. and the County’s Special Taxing District Division, will educate attendees on the recent County Charter amendment that was passed on the November ballot which provided municipalities the authority to manage and create districts that sit fully within their boundaries. A Special Taxing District is a

designated area where a majority of property owners agree to a special property tax in exchange for a specific service. These districts give communities the opportunity to make improvements in the public areas of their neighborhoods which could not be conveniently or equitably done otherwise. These types of improvements include street lighting, security guard services, guardhouses, multipurpose maintenance, and capital improvements/road maintenance. M-D Commission requests FDOT study on 170 St. overpass The Miami Laker staff Despite a plea from residents of Miami Lakes and Palm Springs North to halt plans for opening up an overpass near Hialeah which would bring in more traffic gridlock to their neighborhoods, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved a measure requesting FDOT to conduct a study to determine if the project is feasible. If so, construction to open up an I-75 overpass at N.W. 170 Street can start as early as this year, said Miami-Dade Commission Chairman Esteban Bovo Jr., who sponsored the legislation. Bovo, who represents the area, said traffic relief is needed for residents following a rash of new commercial and residential developments, and opening up the roadway was the only solution to alleviate the traffic bottleneck. “It’s like a lobster trap,” Bovo said. He said the root of the problem

stems from motorists spilling onto N.W. 87 Avenue or cutting through Hialeah, generating traffic congestion in the area. “I understand the passion from PSN and Miami Lakes to protect their neighborhoods, but I don’t want unwanted traffic to go onto the 170 Street bridge. So, I have made several amendments to my resolution to minimize the impact.” Bovo’s amendments call for him to file legislation to halt the project if FDOT’s study results in a negative impact, no trucks would be allowed on the bridge, and east bound traffic must turn left or right onto N.W. 87 Avenue instead of cutting through Miami Lakes and PSN neighborhoods. He said opening up the roadway was not part of a solution for the massive traffic gridlock expected to be generated by the Mega Mall, which will be built outside of Miami Lakes near 1-75.

Stu Wyllie, president and CEO of The Graham Companies, said, “I want to be very clear. The opening of the 170 Street bridge is not part of Dream Miami’s (Mega Mall) proposed traffic plan nor is it a part of our proposed development to the south of the Dream Miami project.” Bovo mentioned another reality to the dismay of Miami Lakes residents – opening up the N.W. 154 Street bridge in the future. Miami Lakes and Hialeah crafted an inter local agreement in 2007 to keep that bridge leading to Miami Lakes Drive closed. “We don’t build bridges to just have them sit there,” he said. In a letter to Bovo and his fellow county commissioners before the meeting, Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid said his constituents deserve a better explanation for opening up N.W. 170 Street since a traffic study has yet to be conducted. “The 32,000 Miami Lakes residents have the right to better understand the effect and change of traffic patterns that the opening of the 170 overpass would have on Miami Lakes,” he said. “The proposed county resolution states, “Opening the bridge extending N.W. 170 Street over I-75 may minimize traffic congestion and increase the flow of traffic, benefiting those who reside and work in the area.” This statement has no factual basis since no traffic study has been done.” But following the commission meeting, Cid said a traffic study to

determine the impact was all Miami Lakes had asked for. “Our position was simple and that was to get a traffic study to see what the impact would be like,” Cid said. “As part of the process, we get discouraged because we see how hard it is to get things done. The commission chair heard our concern and understands our position. If the impact is negative to our community, they made a commitment on the record they wouldn’t move forward with the project.” Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, who also attended the meeting, said he was also pleased with the outcome. “We are going to get our traffic study, which is huge,” he said. “We are working with our neighbors in Hialeah and the County Commission to try to get this done.” Rodriguez offered another solution to alleviate traffic congestion, which is part of Miami Lakes’ transportation master plan. He said before FDOT opens up the bridge, the state agency should simultaneously open the Palmetto underpasses at N.W. 146th Street and at N.W. 160 Street. “That will allow two additional east/west corridors to relieve traffic on the westside.” But some Northwest MiamiDade residents want the bridge to stay closed despite the results of a traffic study. “An overpass will only bring in more traffic making it very hard to get in and out of our own neigh-

Conveniently located in Miami Lakes

borhoods,” a resident said. After the county placed Miami Lakes on alert about opening up Miami Lakes Drive, residents opposed the project saying an overpass could bring down their property values. According to Cid, the interlocal agreement between Miami Lakes and Hialeah prohibits any projects, especially an overpass, to clear the roadway for traffic. “The interlocal agreement states that N.W. 154 Street on the immediate west side of I-75 shall not be accepted by Hialeah for use a public roadway through dedication, deed or any other capacity that would allow the traversal of vehicular traffic eastbound from Hialeah into Miami Lakes, and Hialeah shall not take any actions that advocate, support, approve or permit, either directly or indirectly, the design, construction of or use of theoretical N.W. 154 Street on the immediate west side of I-75 as a public roadway for the traversal of vehicular traffic eastbound from Hialeah’s jurisdiction into the town until the term expires,” Cid said in a letter to Bovo and the County Commission. Some Miami Lakes residents indicated opening up both bridges at Miami Lakes Drive and Northwest 170 Street could lead to an exodus, as they are mulling selling their homes to eschew the additional traffic. “The opening of this bridge will be a total disaster for our city,” said resident Pablo Garcia.

But everywhere I went, the banks were charging me very high rates, or said I didn’t qualify for an auto loan. “A friend told me about his credit union and how they had helped him many times. When I arrived at JetStream, the staff and especially the manager, Carmen Garcia, were very helpful and explained in detail my various options. School Board’s Perla T. Hantman recognizes Lakes Mayor Manny Cid

MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER Perla Tabares Hantman honored Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid at the recent Board meeting for being a positive example for youth in the community. “Don’t let construction dust take over your home or business.”

The Miami-Dade School Board approved four items proposed by Board Member Perla Tabares Hantman at its regular monthly meeting including, recognizing Town of Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid, promoting March as Florida Bike Month, and April 22 as Earth Day. “The Honorable Manny Cid is the first mayor raised in the Town of Miami Lakes. He has been an extraordinary leader and public servant for the residents of Miami Lakes, and a valued friend and neighbor,” said Hantman. Hantman honored Cid with a School Board proclamation for his continued commitment in setting a positive example for the youth in the community and his dedication to Miami Lakes. “Florida Bike Month promotes healthy lifestyle choices and encourages physical fitness. Additionally, I am proud to be able

to bring forward initiatives to help raise students’ consciousness and prepare them for life beyond the classroom as citizens of the world.” In previous actions, the School Board unanimously approved other agenda items proposed by Hantman in late January. The first item recognized Miami-Dade County Commission chairman Esteban L. Bovo, Jr. “Esteban L. Bovo, Jr. has been an extraordinary leader and public servant for the residents of MiamiDade County for 19 years and a valued friend, neighbor and resident of Miami-Dade County for more than 45 years,” said Hantman. The second item endorses March 2017 as “Arts in Our Schools Month.” “The arts have been shown to develop a child’s self-esteem and sharpen their critical-thinking

skills, as well as increasing multicultural awareness, and technical, communication and expressive skills,” said Hantman, a long-time supporter of arts education. The last item authorizes the Superintendent to engage in dialogue with the new federal administration in support of reasonable immigration relief for undocumented students who have grown up in the United States, have good moral character, and are enlisted in the military or pursuing a college education, or a vocation. “It is important that we create public awareness as the federal government transitions into a new administration. We must continue to urge our leaders to find a fair and reasonable way to address these children who are in our country without documentation through no fault of their own,” said Hantman.

Christmas tree mulch now available at N. Dade Landfill At the end of the 2016 holiday season, Miami-Dade’s Department of Social Waste Management collected used Christmas trees at several of the Trash and Recycling Center locations. Those used trees have since been mulched and now that mulch is being made available to county residents free of charge.

Residents need to bring their own bags or containers and the mulch is available on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. For Miami Lakes area residents, the mulch is available at the North Dade Landfill, 21500 N.W. 47 Avenue, which is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Danny Quesada’s ‘dream hunting trip’ nets both a moose and a bear By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes resident Danny Quesada, 16, has been on hunting and camping trips with his father, Mike, since he was four years old, so participating on a televised hunt for a moose was a great opportunity for the father and son duo. Quesada was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at 13 months old, a disease which causes abnormally thick mucus resulting in frequent life-threatening respiratory infections and continued hospitalizations. Life expectancy for this disease is in the late 30’s. “This has not slowed Danny down in the least bit and in fact it has made him more determined in everything he does,” said Mike. With the help of Bruce Compton, Quesada and his father found out about the organization The Outdoor Dream Foundation, a non-profit run by Brad and Suzanne Hones, that provides outdoor dream adventures with hunts and fishing to terminally ill and disabled children. The organization connected Quesada with the Palouse-Whitepine Rocky Mtn Elk Foundation Chapter #160 in Moscow, Idaho for the hunt of a lifetime. This was Quesada’s dream hunt – a moose. The organization also provided all equipment including a rifle, clothing and gear as well as three meals a day and four wheelers to get around Moscow Mountain to search for moose. With the help of hunting

He is pictured with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Idaho Chapter including (from left) Justin Turner, Krystal Lewis, Greg Harris, Jay Goodson and Cliff Beck. hounds Quesada came across a bear and earned the nickname “Dead Eye Dan” for positioning himself quickly for the shot. The following few days were a bust but finally on the last day of the trip Quesada spotted and took down a moose with one shot from his Remington .308 using Barnes 168gr TTSX bullets. It took two four-wheelers to hoist and transport the moose back to camp. “Although the main objective of the trip was the hunt, we walked away with lifelong memories and a whole mess of new friends,” said Mike. “There aren’t enough words

to express the gratitude we have for all involved on this great adventure.” Footage of Quesada’s hunt for the moose aired in December and footage of the black bear hunt aired on Monday, February 20, Thursday, February 23, and Saturday, February 25, and streamed online at www.vidillion. tv/pursuitchannel.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY COMMISSION Chairman Esteban Bovo Jr., met with Florida’s Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera to discuss Miami-Dade County’s infrastructure needs and working with state officials to deliver the projects. Bovo represents District 13, which includes Miami Lakes, Hialeah and unincorporated areas. Last month, Lopez-Cantera paid a visit to Miami Lakes, where he met with town officials and residents to discuss the town’s legislative priorities. His visit included a tour of observing infrastructure projects and ongoing projects in the 6.5 square mile town.

Lumina Massage offers workplace massages for employee wellness By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Lumina Massage, a massage company owned by Michelle Orchid Rodriguez, is a staple of the health-conscious community of Miami Lakes and now Rodriguez is expanding to offer her services for employee wellness. The mission for this new service is to help entrepreneurs establish a healthier workplace. Education is a tenant of Rodriguez’s work with Lumina Massage, as it is essential to understand the body for a holistic approach to massage therapy.

“I educate the employer and employees that massage therapy is not just an enjoyable perk, but this is specifically for wellness and health, said Rodriguez. “The workplace has a huge influence on the life of employees so employers who highlight wellness can really improve their employees health. Also, studies show that employees who are taken care of by their company in this way are more likely to stay in that position much longer. So it’s a retention strategy but it’s truly beneficial for everyone. Services for massage therapy in the workplace aren’t new, as many

The Kislak Organization sells M. Lakes Corporate Center The Kislak Organization, a national real estate investment firm headquartered in Miami Lakes, recently sold Miami Lakes Corporate Center, 14750 N.W. 77 Court. The majority of the fractured office condo building was purchased in 2014, and the acquisition of the remaining units was completed in 2015, for a combined total price of $7.05 million. Two and a half years after the initial purchase, Kislak sold the property for $12.175 million. “We discovered this fractured office property in our own backyard, and put in the time, money and effort to create a distinctive and desirable office center in a ter-

rific location, said Kislak president and CEO Tom Bartelmo. “When we took on the project, it was less than 20 percent occupied. Thanks to quality renovations throughout the building, aggressive leasing and attentive property management, it was 100 percent occupied at the time of sale. The property with 75,028 square feet of rentable office space sold for $162 per RSF, the highest price per RSF in Miami Lakes since 2006 for office buildings of 15,000 square feet or larger, according to recent market research. Rene Vivo and Vivo Real Estate Group represented Kislak in the initial acquisition, leasing, and the sale to Rafel LLC.

companies have opted to focus on employee health, particularly Fortune 500 companies, such as Google, to offer an array of services to their employees. However, in the small town of Miami Lakes, Lumina Massage’s workplace wellness is innovative. Though companies like Google can afford to offer their employees extensive workplace perks, many start-ups and small business owners like those in Miami Lakes who are often residents with a passion, just like Rodriguez, typically can’t afford such costly benefits. For small to mid-size businesses, Lumina Massage is a boon. Lumina Massage began its first workplace wellness engagement at First Origin Mortgage Lenders in Miami Lakes. “The owner, Ray Palacios, is a believer in implementing health and wellness into his own life and wanted to contribute to his employees, said Rodriguez. Rodriguez also visited Paramount Engineering, another Miami Lakes business, in January when owner Cesar Soto hired Lumina Massage for a four hour shift for 16 employees. For Valentine’s Day, Rodriguez massaged the staff at FemLife in Pembroke Pines. Entrepreneurs and business owners interested in implementing wellness for their employees can visit www.luminamassage.com/ lumina-wellness-day/ for more information on how to prepare, pricing and payment.

Mother of Our Redeemer students participated in annual Trike-A-Thon The preschool and kindergarten students at Mother of Our Redeemer Catholic School, 8445 N.W. 186 Street, were riding for a cure for children with cancer. They participated in the annual Trike-A-Thon for St. Jude’s Hospital in mid February. They were fully suited with headgear, kneepads, and bike decor for an intense race to the finish line. The preschoolers and kindergarteners received sponsorship and donations to raise money for children like them that need the much needed care and therapy to help battle cancer. The little racers rode many laps for awareness. They persevered and ended the event with three winning laps around the courtyard with older students and teachers cheering them on from the sidelines. All of them reached the finish line with great big smiles on their faces for the awesome job done. One lap at a time, the students at MOOR will help find a cure.

American High’s softball team off to a 3-0 record as Ashley Alfonso continues her wins American High’s softball team is 3-0, including an upset victory over the No. 1 ranked team in Miami-Dade County. Last week, the Patriots remained undefeated with a 15-0 victory of Krop, as pitcher Ashley Alfonso is 3-0. In that game, she tossed 6 strikeouts in six innings of work. A week prior, the Patriots knocked off the then-No.1 ranked team, Palmetto High, 3-1, in the third game of the regular season. In the game, the Patriots played like state champions, as pitcher Ashley Alfonso tossed eight strikeouts, gave up three hits and one unearned run in seven innings of work. Other top performers included Alexis Guzman, who went 2-3with two RBI’s; Yanelys Fernandez, (2-3 with one RBI), Tyenna Colon (1-3 with one run, 2B and one stolen base), and Erika Castroman, who went 1-3. The girls dominated Palmetto in every facet of the game, with outstanding defensive plays by Melanie Arauz, Karla Soza and Yanelys Fernandez. “I believe these two teams are headed for a showdown at the end of the season to decide who goes to the state finals,” said Alex Castroman, Erika Castroman’s father and coach at the Miami Lakes Optimist Club. “At least for now, we know who’s No. 1.”

St. Thomas basketball coach Patrick Gayle celebrates 100th career victory St. Thomas University men's basketball head coach Patrick Gayle recently won his 100th career game with a 90-61 win at Ave Maria. Gayle, in his fifth season at the helm of the Bobcats, now holds a 100-49 overall record (.670 winning percentage). He has led St. Thomas to the NAIA National Championship tournament three times along with a Sun Conference regular-season championship in 2013-14. In his first full season as head coach, Gayle led the Bobcats to an NAIA National Championship Tournament appearance. Gayle's Bobcats finished the 2012-13 season with a 21-12 record and a 107 record in the Sun Conference. He followed that with a 26-7 overall record and a 16-2 league mark to win the Sun Conference in

2013-14 resulting in a return trip to the National Championship Tournament. At the 2013-14 tournament, Gayle led the Bobcats to a 75-72 win over Union (Ky.) in the NAIA tournament. In the 2014-15 season, the Bobcats made their fourth straight trip (third straight under Gayle) to the NAIA Championships. The 2015-16 season featured wins over highly ranked national opponents Warner (ranked 7th at the time) and Keiser (also ranked 7th) en route to an 18-10 overall record and a 11-5 Sun Conference mark. This season, Gayle has led the Bobcats to an 18-7 overall record

and a 9-4 record in conference play with three games remaining. Earlier this season, STU was ranked a program-best No. 4 in the nation. Gayle took over as head coach following four seasons as assistant coach with coach Clark Maloney with the Bobcats going 69-49 with Gayle on the staff. Prior to St. Thomas, Gayle was an assistant coach at Tiffin University in Ohio; Creekside High School in Fairburn, Georgia; and Nova High School in Davie, Florida. At Creekside, Gayle coached Kevin Murphy, a 2012 second-round draft pick of the Utah Jazz out of Tennessee Tech.

Goleman’s baseball team defeats Hialeah Gardens in the BSN Tournament Barbara Goleman’s baseball team defeated rival Hialeah Gardens, 1-0, in the BSN Tournament at Christopher Columbus High School. With the two schools only a 10minute drive apart, it’s only fitting the game was an intense contest decided by one run. This time it was the Gators who got the last laugh and neighborhood bragging rights. Sophomore John Urena ended a scoreless tie when he crossed home plate for the winning run in the top of the sixth inning for

Goleman (1-0). Senior Simon Dalmau had one of five hits for the Gators. He finished 1-for-2 with a double. Goleman senior left-handed pitcher Adrien Garrastazu tossed a complete game, recording 10 strikeouts, and Raul Conpanioni was 2-for-3 for Goleman. Levis Aguila was 2-for-3 to lead the Hialeah Gardens offense, and Iroel Ruiz struck out four in three scoreless innings. Columbus shut out Goleman, 10-0, in the ensuing game in the tournament.

Mater Lakes advances to basketball semifinals; others lose quarterfinals Mater Lakes Academy’s boys varsity basketball team has advanced to the FHSAA’s Region 4-5A semifinal round. The Bears defeated the Key West Conchs on Thursday, February 16, 84-76 in an intense matchup. The team was led by Cyrus Largie, who scored 31 points and had 13 rebounds. Jurik Morales had 21 points with five assists and Donovan Alvarez had 13 points. “It’s been amazing to see our student athletes come together to build a promising program with its future brighter than it’s past. Through discipline, determination, and dedication our program has made it this far,” said Juan Urbina, Head Coach. This was the first-ever win in a regional playoff game and the Bears advanced for the first time to the semifinal round they fell to

Gulliver Prep, 81-67. Jamal Mashburn scored 25 points, 21 of them in the second half, to lead all players. In other action, District foes Mater Academy and Barbara Goleman boys’ basketball teams were hoping for a rematch in the regional semifinal, one week after the Lions topped the Gators in the district championship game. But McArthur spoiled Mater Academy’s plans thanks to a clutch shot in the closing seconds

of the game, ending the Lions’ season with a 56-55 win in the Region 4-8 quarterfinal. And Nova made sure Goleman wouldn’t have the last laugh, as the Gators fell in their quarterfinal game. Pines Charter defeated American High, 63-61, in the Region 4-9A quarterfinal. With American leading late in the fourth quarter, Pines Charter went on a 9-2 run and was victorious.

Mater Academy 6th-grade students have hands-on science day during tour at Florida International Univ. Sixth grade students from Mater Academy Charter School got a college lesson courtesy of Florida International University. Last month, the students visited the college campus for an interactive, hands-on science day. The students toured FIU’s state-of-the art trace evidence and DNA profiling facilities and learned about the research that goes on at the International Forensic Research Institute (IFRI), Biomolecular Sciences Institute (BSI) and other biology and chemistry labs at FIU. The visit to FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus complemented Mater Academy’s curriculum, which includes topics on how quickly an epidemic can become a breakout, the spread of mosquito viruses and DNA analysis. FIU faculty representing those areas conducted special sessions related to DNA typing, decomposition, Zika, and brain and behavior. The students also analyzed four DNA samples, fingerprints and blood and hair samples to solve a murder. FIU biologist DeEtta Mills spoke about canine heroes. She highlighted the various roles dogs play in law enforcement, homeland security and the agricultural industry – including the work researchers are doing with dogs and drones to fight laurel wilt, which is destroying avocado trees at alarming rates. The students then participated in a live K-9 unit scent detection demonstration.

Mater Lakes Academy, is one of the 7,500 nationwide finalists and the first ever for her school. Peraza has been a student at Mater Lakes Academy since she was in 6th grade and has been a straight-A student every semester. Peraza is not only a straight-A student but she has received perfect scores in the statewide assessments. She is also enrolled in Dualenrollment courses and is set to graduate with a high school diploma in June as well as with her Associates in Arts from Miami Dade College and Doral College. The Mater Lakes Academy faculty and staff congratulated Peraza on this accomplishment. “Gillian is the type of student that there is no limit in the sky for her. She has a thirst for knowledge that you can give her any challenge and she will rise to the occasion. She definitely has the mark of excellence. Gillian is a good one,” said school principal Rene Rovirosa. “In her comments and questions in her classes she is very poised and humble. She is too humble,” said Susette Couso, Social Studies teacher. “I am elated,” said Peraza. “The people that I have met and the teachers at Mater Lakes have helped further my education and have contributed to my learning environment. I appreciate the principal’s support throughout this process. He has been so enthusiastic and seems more excited than me at times.”

Pace baseball team begins season with strong roster; first home game on March 3 By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker The Pace High School Spartans baseball team has a long storied history of success that includes multiple state titles and players who would go on to the play in the major leagues. Last year was no exception, as the Spartans went all the way to the FHSAA state finals. This most recent round of success has been the result of longterm planning by head coach Thomas Duffin, who was named the 6A-2A Baseball Coach of the Year at The Miami Herald's AllDade Athletic Awards last year. He has focused on building a foundation for the team by developing young players. He has what he calls a “Fab Five” of star players that were built up as freshmen, which include current seniors Nicholas Fusco, Andres Sanchez, Manny Rodriguez, and Brian Diaz. Duffin credits them with helping the Pace baseball program see a return to excellence. “I want them to be remembered for reviving the Pace baseball legacy and bringing new excitement to the team,” said Duffin. Other star players include

shortstop Jeter Downs, who has committed to the University of Miami. According to Duffin, Downs has attracted scouts and is currently projected to go in the top seven rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft after graduation. In addition to the strong pitching that helped take them to the state finals last year, Duffin also stated that the team has improved on their offense and their hitting. Of the 14 seniors on the team, 13 are already committed to play at universities. Pitchers Fusco and Rodriguez signed with Division I schools High Point University and Bethune-Cookman University respectively. Even two freshmen, Nick Regalado and Sammy Infante, are already committed to the University of Miami. “Hopefully our level of play shows our maturity and experience after having played here for four years,” said catcher Andres Sanchez, who has committed to Barry University. The Pace Spartans varsity baseball team will play their home opener against Mater Lakes Academy on Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m. at the Pace baseball field.

Nova Southeastern University and her specialist degree from the University of Miami. Other honors she has received have been grants from The Education Fund for two of her ideas as well as receiving a Citicorp Grant with another BGEC teacher. She has also been acknowledged from the state of Florida for being one of the top teachers in the state for having the most learning gains. Her additional jobs at Bob Graham Education Center are PD Liaison, the Elementary Math Liaison, and the IXL and Reflex Math Coordinator. She is also the only person in the school district that teaches Clinical Supervision for Educators. Lisowski is a mother to three adult daughters and hopes to be a grandmother someday soon. In her

spare time Laura assists her daughters in volunteer work with The Little Lighthouse which includes art and crafts and activities with emergency foster care children. Lisowski says she gets a feeling of accomplishment and she was meant to be teaching at BGEC at the end of her career. She finds great joy when she can help a teacher solve a problem, use her connections to make things happen or just lend a hand getting things done. What really warms her heart is when former students yell her name in the hall, come by and visit to tell her what they remember from her class or the students who say thank you for helping them get that 5 on the FSA.

68 Pace High students travel to Canada for annual Senior Trip By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker In a February tradition spanning over three decades, Monsignor Edward Pace High School seniors have been packing their bags and sweaters to travel to Canada for the annual senior trip. This year, 68 seniors and eight chaperones flew to Montreal from February 16 through 20 for a trip of snow, skiing, shopping, maple syrup, and faith. After landing in Montreal at 1 a.m. the night before, the seniors and their chaperones spent their

first full day skiing and snowboarding on the slopes at the ski station Belle Neigel. For many seniors, this was their first time not only skiing, but experiencing snow altogether. The next two days involved snow tubing down Mont Avila, snacking on sticks of frozen maple syrup at a sugar shack, and skating in Montreal. Students and chaperones spent most of their nights in Camp Edphy, which has hosted the Pace seniors for decades. The trip wasn’t entirely in the snow, as the group went into the

city of Montreal itself on February 19. They visited the breath-taking Basilica of Notre Dame and St. Joseph’s Shrine and even went shopping in Old Montreal. After a final morning of snow activities including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding, the group flew home to South Florida, having created memories that will last a lifetime. “The most memorable things were the sights I saw like the forests covered in snow,” said senior Jose Colmenares.

St. Thomas president Msgr. Franklyn Casale announces retirement plans After a 22-year tenure that saw enormous growth for St. Thomas University, Msgr. Franklyn M. Casale announced his intention to retire as university president in January of next year. Casale, 75, has been the longest-serving president at St. Thomas, and has the longest tenure of any South Florida college or university president. His presidency has marked remarkable progress for the institution. Casale has been building the University’s position as the leading Catholic university in the Southeast by developing and graduating recognized global leaders in ministry, science, business, education and justice. He has shaped four fundamental core values in the institution: A strong Catholic identity; global diversity; student success; and leadership development. “It takes great leadership to create a great institution,” explains John J. Dooner, chair of the University’s Board of Trustees. “Since he first arrived on campus, Casale has worked to make St. Thomas University a model resource that prepares students to lead and engage in the legal, business, social entrepreneurship and scientific universe of the global community. He will leave a legacy of committed service to higher education, which has resulted in positioning the University not only as a leader in higher education, but a leader in producing graduates that are ethical, knowledgeable and confident leaders in their fields.”

MSGR. FRANKLYN CASALE

“Monsignor Franklyn Casale’s long tenure has been a blessing to St. Thomas University as well to our South Florida community,” said Archbishop Thomas Wenski. “During his presidency, more than 17,000 have graduated to positions of leadership and influence in their communities. Their formation in an academic setting imbued with the values of Catholic social teaching help them to remain focused on service, compassion and ethics. We all owe Monsignor a big ‘thank you’ for his vision, commitment and dedication.” Casale is active in a wide range of community organizations in Miami since his arrival. His involvements include participation in committees with the Archdiocese of Miami; the Board of Governors for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce; the Academic Leaders Council of the

Beacon Council, One Community One Goal; the Holocaust Documentation & Education Center, Inc.; and a long-serving member of the Orange Bowl Committee. He was appointed by former Governor Jeb Bush to serve on the Governor’s Haiti Advisory Group. His leadership positions in higher education associations include chair of the Board of Directors, Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities; Board of Trustees and former vice chair, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges; Governing Board, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities; past-chair President’s Council of Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida; Florida Association of Colleges and Universities; and co-founder, Haiti-Tech, an organization that organizes and maintains a vocational/technical school in Haiti and educates over 700 students yearly. “It has been an honor to be part of an institution that changes the lives of people for the better, both intellectually and spiritually,” said Casale. “I look back at my years at STU with much pride for what we have accomplished, how we have grown our Catholic intellectual tradition, and how we have impacted communities here and abroad. I look forward to working with our committed Board and the excellent administration, faculty and staff during the next year, as we transition to the next exciting phase of St. Thomas University.”

ML Congregational’s Concert Series presents Adolfo Vidal in a classical music recital Miami Lakes Congregational Church’s Concert Series presents a Spring Piano Recital performed by concert pianist Dr. Adolfo Vidal at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at the church, 6701 Miami Lakeway South. Vidal will be performing music by Ravel Sonatine “Gaspard de la Nuit,” Lauro’s “4 Venezuelan Waltzes,” and Chopin’s beloved “Heroic Polonaise.” “Gaspard de la Nuit,” three piano poems, is Sonatine’s terrifying piano masterpiece, known as much for its devilish difficulty as its unearthly music, especially Scarbo. Sonatine set out to engineer a superhumanly hard piece to play, filling it with imaginative and eerie musical images. Antonio Lauro is probably Venezuela’s best-known composer of classical music, although his name is more familiar to aficionados of guitar. The waltzes are tran-

scribed to the piano by Vidal himself. Chopin’s polonaises are generally the best known of all polonaises in classical music. The polonaise is a dance of Polish origin and is the composer’s uplifting expression of his love for his native Poland. The A-flat major “Heroic Polonaise” is one of Chopin’s most admired compositions and has long been a favorite of the classical piano repertoire. Vidal is a VenezuelanAmerican pianist with a doctorate degree in music from the University of Miami and piano studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music. The suggested donation is $15. A reception will follow the performance. The program is supported by South Florida Friends of Classical Music and Steinway & Sons which is providing a grand piano for the occasion.

MD Public Schools graduation rate reaches new high Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) graduation rate has reached an all-time high of 80.4 percent for the 2015-2016 academic year, exceeding the average of other large Florida school districts, including Broward, Hillsborough, and Duval county. This 2.3 point increase from last year’s rate of 78.1 marks the highest graduation rate M-DCPS has achieved since the Florida Department of Education began tracking graduation statistics with modern methods in the late 1990’s. Miami-Dade’s graduation rates for White, Black and Hispanic students also exceeded those of the State. The District’s graduation rate has increased by almost 22 percent from 58.7 percent in 2006-2007. “The graduation rates recently released by the Florida Department of Education demonstrate that student academic progress in Miami-Dade County Public Schools continues to rise,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “Our school district’s recordhigh graduation rate is a direct result of instructional rigor, teaching ingenuity, and education professionals who care about every student in every classroom. With a staggering, nearly 22 percent increase in the graduation rate since 2007, the three largest ethnic subgroups in Miami-Dade surpassed their counterparts across the State. Parents, teachers, school leaders, and the entire community can take great pride in this remarkable and historic accomplishment.”
