Michael Barcelo and his former classmates continue fundraising for American Cancer Soc. By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff When Michael Barcelo was diagnosed with Leukemia when he was 3 years-old, his friends and classmates at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School rallied to his aid and helped raise money for people who were stricken with the deadly disease. Throughout the years, the same group of high school students who now attend Monsignor Pace High and Our Lady of the Lourdes Academy, are still collecting money for a worthy cause and participating in the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Miami Lakes. Now 15 years-old, Michael and the group eight kids are planning their latest fund-raiser, a carwash on Sunday, March 22 next to McDonalds near N.W. 67th Avenue and the Palmetto Expressway, hoping to collect more funds than in previous years for the Miami Lakes event scheduled for Saturday, May 2 at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. So far, the group has raised $1,000. But for the first time, the group is doing the drive on their own this year. In the previous years, their parents helped them with their fundraising activities. They enjoyed success during a fundraising event at Menchies in Miami Lakes, where they helped sell ice cream and frozen yogurt, and 20 percent of the sales went to the group for their efforts. “We are expecting to raise a lot

During the Relay for Life event, the students will participate in an overnight community fundraising walk, in which teams of people will camp out around a track and members of each team take turns walking around the track. Each member of team Mooooo will bring a cancer patient to the event. Following his cancer diag-

noses, Barcelo served as honorary chairperson for the Miami Lakes Relay for Life event on two occasions. Barcelo’s mother, Maria Barcelo said her son endured rigorous chemotherapy to cure his disease and he wanted to start a group, with the assistance of their parents, to help raise money for cancer research. “He wanted other people to avoid what he went through,” she said. “This is wonderful group of kids and their parents support them,” she said. “It’s a happy occasion but they are taking it very seriously.”

Bald Eagle nesting pair halts 87th Avenue project By The Miami Laker staff Miami-Dade County’s Northwest 87th Avenue expansion and roadway improvement project has been delayed after construction workers spotted two American Bald Eagles and a nest in a tree located near the unincorporated community of Palm Springs North at approximately N.W. 181 Street. The county’s Public Works Department informed Vice Chair of the Miami-Dade Commission Esteban Bovo, Jr. that workers

were forced to stop the work last week in his district because the endangered species are protected by the Florida Wildlife Commission. The Bald Eagles are nesting and the season for nesting ends around May 15. Construction can then resume, according to Bovo’s office. Construction of the project commenced last year and was slated to be completed sometime later this year or in 2016. The project includes widening

the lanes from N.W. 170th Street to Miami Gardens Drive to alleviate traffic congestion, installing a 36 inch water main and the replacement of a 47 inch by 71 inch culvert cross in for the N.W. 170 Street canal, which was required at the intersection of N.W. 87th Avenue and N.W. 170 Street. In addition, a proposed project may also have to be put on hold because of the Bald Eagles. Last week, the Miami-Dade Community Council 5 approved a development plan, with some conditions and restrictions, to build a Walmart neighborhood grocery center and pharmacy at N.W. 87th Avenue and Miami Gardens Drive. Among the conditions were reducing the square footage to 55,000 and that no two stores shall be combined or joined together. The developers are aware of the eagle nest and working with the Eagle Watch Group and the Florida Wildlife Commission to make sure any proposed construction doesn’t harm the endangered species and their nest.

FDOT outlines multiple projects for I-75 corridor The Florida Department of Transportation has scheduled a community meeting for 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, at the Country Club of Miami, 6801 N.W. 186 Street, to give property owners and interested parties an opportunity to learn more about the agency’s proposed improvement plans on I-75. According to the plans, contractors will continue building the new express lanes within the median from N.W. 170 Street to Miramar Parkway. In addition, they will continue with the excavation of the pond on the northeast corner of I-75 and Florida’s Turnpike. Crews are scheduled to begin pile driving operations at the Snake Creek Canal Bridge and the express lanes bridges over the Florida Turnpike in late March. Travel lanes will not be impacted by this work. Activities will include excavating ponds at the Miramar Parkway and Pines Boulevard interchanges. Motorists should expect periodic lane closures during non-peak hours. The contractor will also continue building the new express lanes within the median. Sound barrier wall panel installation south of Pines Boulevard will continue. For the south of Sheridan Street to north of Griffin Road project, sound barrier wall construction will continue at various locations. Work will be underway near the Towngate community, located on the west side of I-75 between Sheridan Street and Pines Boulevard. Activities include drilling posts in the ground and setting panels. In addition, clearing for sound barrier wall construction will begin near the Waterford and Ivanhoe communities between Stirling Road and Griffin Road. The contractor will also continue with sound barrier wall construction near the Waverly Hundred, Crossbow and Falcon Lea communities throughout the rest of March. Other activities include median work on the Sheridan Street Bridge, a traffic shift will be required to allow crews to work safely. More information will be posted at a later date. Motorists should expect the following daily lane closures: One westbound lane of the Sheridan Street Bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. One eastbound lane of Sheridan Street Bridge will be closed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The construction schedules are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances. NCAA Championship is annual trek for Stevensons By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff In 1982, when then-freshman Michael Jordan made the winning basket to give North Carolina the NCCA Championship over Georgetown in New Orleans, longtime Miami Lakes resident Reid Stevenson was there. As North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano and the Wolfpack celebrated following Lorenzo Charles’ buzzer-beating dunk to win the championship against Houston, Stevenson was sitting in the stands in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When Kentucky player Jack Givens was named the most outstanding player of the tournament after his team beat Duke in 1978, Stevenson witnessed coach Joe B. Hall finally winning a championship in St. Louis. “Those were some memorable moments I will always cherish,” said Stevenson, who’s an assistant basketball coach at Monsignor Edward Pace High School. As part of the National Association of Basketball

Coaches, which created the format for the NCAA Tournament, Stevenson will make his 36th consecutive trip to the Final Four in April at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. He has been in attendance at college basketball’s biggest stage for 42 years and only missed one, the 1979 showdown between Magic Johnson’s Michigan State Spartans and Larry Bird-led Indiana State in Salt Lake City because of the birth of his son, Curtis. Curtis Stevenson has been attending the Final Four with his dad for the past 24 years. He said his two favorite memories were Duke winning back-toback championships over Michigan in 1992 in Minnesota and Chris Webber’s infamous time-out call that cost the Wolverines the championship against Dean Smith’s North Carolina team a year later in New Orleans. “It was my favorite because I was a big Duke fan growing up,” said Curtis Stevenson, a sports-

Town Hall is drop off point for children’s books donations Town of Miami Lakes announced it is one of nine drop off sites for the Read to Learn Books for Free Program. Read to Learn Books for Free is part of a larger Read to Learn initiative launched by The Children’s Trust and the Center for Writing and Literature at Miami Dade College to increase the number of third graders who read at or above grade level. Reading at grade level by the third grade is the leading indicator of school success and high school graduation, but currently nearly half of third graders fail to achieve this critical benchmark.

To date, the initiative has distributed almost 200,000 books; however, the program’s main challenge has been keeping the flow of age-appropriate, donated books at adequate levels. Residents are encouraged to donate gently used or new children’s books on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. inside Town Hall or at the Police Department office, which are both located at 6601 Main Street. To support Read to Learn Books for Free, contact Lissette.Mendez@mdc.edu, or call 305-237-3298.

caster at 560 WQAM who cohosts the morning show with Joe Rose. “And the strange part about the Webber time-out was that no one in the building knew what was going on. Most people thought he traveled and some people thought he called time out with no time outs left. The whole building was confused. They didn’t know what really happened.” Reid Stevenson said one of his favorite moments came after the 1982 championship game. He said he was walking along Bourbon Street in New Orleans when he ran into Jordan. “People said this is the guy who made the winning shot,” Stevenson said. “I didn’t know who Michael Jordan was at the time but I was right there standing near him.” Reid and Curtis Stevenson said attending the Final Four together is the most fun any father and son could ever have. “This is our thing, we do this every year,” Curtis Stevenson said. “No matter where it is, we will be there. I take my vacation for these games. My mom came for a couple of years and we had family members and coaches join us.” Said Reid Stevenson: “We have a good time.” Reid Stevenson knows all about championships. As the assistant coach for the Spartans, the team won five state championships, including back-toback (2007 and 2008) under head coach Mark Lieberman, and as a high-school player at Miami High, the Stingerees won the champi-

Healing Waters Massage Therapy’s wellness services By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff A client for Healing Waters Massage Therapy suffered from an almost 90 degree angled back and told owners, Marlene Menendez and Marisol Cribeiro, that her one wish was to be able to dance at her son’s wedding. After massage therapy sessions done before and following a major surgery, that wish came true. “That was one of those moments that you see the work you’re doing come full circle,” said Cribeiro.“It was a very moving experience for us.” Healing Waters Massage Therapy first moved to Miami Lakes in November 2010 and later to its current location at 5901 N.W. 151 Street, Suite 202, in June 2012. Menendez and Cribeiro first met during an advanced therapeutic class while attending school for massage therapy. Shortly thereafter they came up with the name Healing Waters, an amalgamation of both their names whose shared beginning letters “Mar” translates to “sea” in Spanish. Though the name stuck, it would be several years before the official birth of Healing Waters Massage Therapy as Cribeiro and Menendez moved to different cities and pursued different paths all the while keeping in touch. Menendez studied Health Administration and Medical Marketing during this time and after years apart, Cribeiro and Menendez reunited in 2007 as colleagues for their business endeavors. Cribeiro has continued her studies at Florida International University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Humanities and a mas-

ter’s degree in Religious Studies. Cribeiro and Menendez both hold various certifications including degrees in Massage Therapy and Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy from Florida College of Natural Health, qualification as Reiki practitioners, trained in indigenous traditions and modalities, energetic alignment, inner and holistic wellness. Both are certified counselors as clergy members and well versed in traditional forms of healing like accupressure and more. They are licensed with the State of Florida Board of Massage, members of the Florida State Massage Therapy Association, are Nationally Board Certified and CPR Certified. “We look at ourselves as a living bridge between the traditional and the alternative,” said Menendez. “For us massage is obviously one of the most effective and oldest ways to treat the body. Balance starts from within is our motto. That’s the foundation of our work.” Services include but are not limited to swedish massage, deep tissue massage, qi shiatsu massage, aromatherapy, Chakra alignment, Reiki, couples massage, and full body massage. Menendez and Cribeiro also conduct a class on power stretching which targets every muscle in the body with active stretching. Healing Waters Massage Therapy is also a mobile business meaning, especially for those who are injured and have trouble leaving home, services are done at the client’s residence. We Get Letters: Thanks for Flag Retirement story

Miami Lakes Branch Library lists March program schedule

To the Editor The Miami Laker Thank you so much for having the information about the Flag Retirement Ceremony in the February 6 issue. I took some flags over to Town Center and promised myself that I would attend the ceremony on February 28. I am a Girl Scout Outdoor Trainer and have done many flag retirements over a campfire at a training. I wondered how it could be done at 9 a.m. and it be as meaningful. I was very impressed; it was well planned out and executed. I was happy that Girl Scouts were there to help. The gentlemen who spoke on the history and protocol of the flag was great. All who were there participated by placing parts of the flag, stripes or the blue field, on the fire. There were a number of veterans there but, I wished that more people had been there to learn about the flag and its prper disposal. I understand that it is to be an annual event; hopefully more people will be there next year. Jeanette Eggleston Hialeah, Florida

Goleman’s softball team posts undefeated record By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Albeit Barbara Goleman sophomore pitcher Natalie Costero has led her softball team to a 13-0 record, she would rather play second or third base. In 13 games this season, Costero pitched 11 complete games, including against her

team’s toughest challengers including Miami Springs and Carol City. But she said her heart is still set on playing the bases. “Coach Barreda asked me to pitch since I pitched for my childhood travel league team,” Costero said. “I worked hard at it all summer. But I really want to play sec-

ond or third base.” Nevertheless, the Gators are enjoying their best season, which places them in a good position to win the district championship. With less than a month left in the regular season, Goleman head coach Orlando Barreda and his players believe they can hang on and finish the regular season undefeated. But the Gators’ toughest test will be their upcoming district games, which would decide the No. 1 seed in the district playoffs. Though they are undefeated, the Gators are focusing on their modest goal of winning the district championship. Senior outfielder Jessica Costero, Natalie’s sister, said the team is humbled over its undefeated record but has more work to do to remain unblemished. “We all worked very hard this season and I am so very proud of my teammates,” said Jessica, who has committed to attend to Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. “Every game we give it 110 percent and that’s all we ask for. challenges are ahead and we are ready for them.” Barreda has built a team that has played stellar ball, especially in district games. He said his veteran players and 11 underclassman players have good chemistry and a commitment to win as a team. He also credits his coaching staff that worked diligently to keep the team playing together. “This peer support and teaching environment has created a sense of ownership for our experienced players,” Barreda said. “This is truly a united group of young girls and this attitude has transcended onto the field. The experienced players are another interesting combination that includes both

underclassman and upperclassman.’ Sophomore players like Natalie Costero, Emily Bacallao, Denise Hernandez, Kourtney Lohn and Natalie Perez are learning from Jessica Costero and junior players Tori Martin and Michi Oliva. Barreda said his players are not concerned about individual accolades but winning as a team. “Several of our players have performed consistently at a high level this season and have earned impressive individual statistics,” Barreda said. “However, if you ask any of them about their individual accolades or accomplishments they will defer to their team instead.”

Pace High hosts 2015 Spartan Golf Classic on March 27 Pace High School invites golf enthusiasts, alumni, friends, and family to attend its Annual Spartan Golf Classic on Friday, March 27, at the Country Club of Miami, 6801 NW 186 St. This event is a decades-old Pace tradition where golfers and non-golfers can enjoy a day of fun out on the green all while supporting Catholic education. The tournament’s events include a lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse, golf competitions such as a Hole-in-One Contest sponsored by Miami Lakes Auto Mall, a raffle, auction, and an awards dinner to end the day. Other event sponsors include

Baccardi, BB&T, Dynasty Apparel, First Bank, Eagle Brands, Vicky Bakery, Herff Jones, Apollo Bank, and more. All proceeds from the Spartan Golf Classic will benefit the Spartans-4-Spartans program which helps students with special financial hardships. ‘Take Daughters and Sons to Work Day’ scheduled April 10 Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will observe Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on Friday, April 10, instead of the national observance on April 23 to minimize disruptions to testing (FCAT 2.0, FSA, FAIFS, and FSA EOC). Designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day program goes beyond the average “shadow” an adult experience. Exposing girls and boys to what a parent or mentor in their life does

during the work day is important, but showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life does more. Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day provides parents and students an opportunity to share how they envision the future and begin steps towards their end goals. This hands-on and interactive environment is key to achieving success.

Two Barbara Goleman High School students chosen as Posse Scholars By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman Senior High students Gabriella Sallai and David Rodriguez were nominated and selected as Posse Scholars for their academic and extra curricular achievements. The scholarships, four-years and full tuition, valued at a quarter of a million dollars, was awarded to 60 out of 1,300 nominated students across South Florida. Sallai will be attending Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvia and Rodriguez will be attending Syracuse University in New York. The Posse scholarship is awarded to students that have demonstrated leadership qualities as well as a high potential to be successful at a 4-year university and more importantly, make a profound impact on campus upon their arrival. The Posse Foundation, founded in 1989, prides itself on awarding scholarships to students who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Scholars are carefully selected and trained to serve as catalysts for community development. Scholars are placed in supportive, multi-cultural teams, or “Posses” of 10 students. Sallai’s extra curricular activities included her roles as vice president of the National Honor Society, vice president of Mu

Alpha Theta, member of the Science Honor Society and a member of the Class of 2015 club. Rodriguez is Student Government Association vice president, co-founder and vice president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, secretary for The National Honor Society, Miami Lakes United Soccer Club member, member of the Science Club and member of the Science National Honor Society. Sallai hopes to focus on fields like mathematics and psychology and Rodriguez plans to major in biomedical engineering, environmental engineering or biology. For both families the news of the scholarship win came bittersweet. Sallai’s mother, though incredibly proud would have to face her daughter’s departure to a far off state, and Rodriguez’s win provided a much needed celebration in the midst of his father’s passing late last year. “My father was my best friend, my role model, and the one I looked up to the most. His unending knowledge and wise words are two things that I will always keep close to my heart. He could not live to see me earn the Posse Scholarship, but I know he’s watching and protecting me from up above,” said Rodriguez. “I wish to achieve great things and

CBS4’s Jim Berry visits Dade Christian During his recent visit last month, CBS4 Sports Anchor Jim Berry spoke, danced, and even rapped before the secondary students at Dade Christian School. Berry has won five Emmys and is a three time Best of Miami winner. He is also a recipient of the Silver Circle of Excellence award

for a distinguished journalism career from the Suncoast chapter of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. The charismatic sports anchor from Chicago motivated the students to make a difference and shared that the first step is getting out of one’s comfort zone. “If you

want to make a difference, you have to get out of your camp.” Berry, who graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, has interviewed some of the biggest names in professional sports: Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Venus and Serena Williams, and more. Berry shared the four critical qualities that have helped guide each of these athletes toward success – dedication, discipline, determination, and diversity. Berry also encouraged the students to be knowledgeable and informed about their cultural history. “Understand where we [as a society] have been so you can take us to the next level. That's the bottom line. I stand here before you as someone who has benefited from someone else pushing the needle forward.” A man of faith, Berry recognizes God’s blessings in his life, especially when it comes to his career. “God has allowed me to cover 3 World Series, 4 NBA finals, 5 College Championship Games, and 7 Super Bowls. The students, faculty, and staff at Dade Christian School were excited to host Berry. His message of perseverance resonated with the audience and encouraged the students to strive for a better tomorrow.

Bob Graham Education Ctr. names Lourdes Nuñez-Toledo 2015 Teacher of the Year By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Lourdes Nuñez-Toledo spends her leisure time with her family by supporting her kids in their sport activities and traveling. She was recently reminded about the fragility and beauty of human life after reading the book American Sniper and is an alumna of Hialeah Miami Lakes High School. In many ways, Nuñez-Toledo’s life sounds peaceful, that is, until one discovers that she leads a classroom of approximately 30 children for eight hours, five days a week. Nuñez-Toledo, a veteran teacher, was recently named Teacher of the Year by Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC). Following in her mother’s footsteps, Nuñez-Toledo has always known teaching would be her path. She earned her bachelor’s in Psychology from St. Thomas University and master’s in Education Leadership at Nova Southeastern University. She is currently the second grade Extended Foreign Language teacher at BGEC though she has previously taught kindergarten, first, third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade and spent eight years teaching at Hialeah Elementary prior to BGEC’s opening. Nuñez-Toledo was also recognized as Teacher of the Year at Hialeah Elementary. “It is truly humbling and rewarding to be recognized by so many wonderful teachers that I admire,” said Nuñez-Toledo.” Nuñez-Toledo credits her success to a great learning environment surrounded by colleagues and an administrative team that hold education in high regard. Success, she says, is a team effort. In addition to leading her second graders, Nuñez-Toledo is the Reading Liaison for Elementary at BGEC and the chairperson for the Five Star Committee and adviser

High school grads who attended MLK-8 Center invited to reunion on April 13 All graduating high school seniors, class of 2015, who attended Miami Lakes K-8 Center, are invited to an alumni reunion on Thursday, April 13, from 2:45 to 5:30 p.m. in Miami Lakes K-8 Center’s cafeteria. There will be food, refreshments and entertainment in celebration of the alumni. To RSVP, email Sharon Zajac at sharon.zajac@hotmail.com or Bianca Larsh at bmlarsh@bellsouth.net by April 3.

LOURDES NUNEZ-TOLEDO for the National Elementary Honor Society. She also tutors former students during the school year and summer. As a wife of 20 years to David Toledo, and parent of three, Nuñez-Toledo says her role as a parent has shaped her role as a teacher. “I do feel parenting has shaped my teaching in that it allows for me to maintain a level of empathy when dealing with my students, parents and community,” said Nuñez-Toledo. “I carefully consider others as I would want to be considered.” She acknowledges that the best things parents can do for their children’s education is being their “first teacher” by establishing a relationship that is nurtured with daily conversation and problemsolving. “If we don’t carve time out of our day to listen to our children, we will not be raising them, the world will and that is too risky to allow,” Nuñez-Toledo said.

Goleman students’ art displayed as part of Coconut Grove Art Festival While the Coconut Grove Arts Festival (CGAF) may last only three days, its commitment to promoting arts education and artist careers in South Florida is a yearlong venture. Following a successful first year, the exclusive CGAF High School Mentoring Program returned with 10 new art club students from Barbara Goleman Senior High School and matching professional mentors. The two-part mentoring series began in late January at Jungle Island with a private workshop taught by five participating professional artists of the 2015 event. Looking to impact various areas of the greater Miami community and amplify the mission of the organization’s Visiting Artist Week, the Arts Festival invited visual arts students from Goleman. Students participated in Jungle Island’s Lemurs Up-Close encounter and were taught about wildlife conservation efforts to save the species, one of the world’s most endangered. Inspired by the intimate experience, students explored the 18-acre attraction and sketched concepts for a piece in the medium of their choice. More importantly, they had the opportunity to talk to mentors, one-on-one. The private daylong session allowed students to ask candid questions about a career in the arts industry. Later, students showcased their final projects at a special gallery exhibition on display at Jungle Island, hoping to spread conservation awareness. The exhibition was open to the public at Jungle Island through mid February. “Our Visiting Artists Week has made a tremendous impact on our Miami-Dade County public school system,” said Katrina Delgado, Artist Director at the Arts Festival. By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School announced that 12 seniors of the Class of 2015 were accepted into the University of Florida (UF), with eight of those 12 students being Miami Lakes residents. The students accepted include Matthew Arrojas, Courtney Diaz, Juana Diaz, Daniel A. Gonzalez, Eduardo Kuffo, Christian B. Roig, Adam Ruiz, Elexa Suarez, Kirstie Vargas, Steven Yildirim, Gabriel Sanchez, and Suzarah Dorleus. These 12 exceptional students met and surpassed the GPA and standardized test requirements to be accepted into UF. Their potential enrollment in UF is buoyed by credits earned through Pace High’s dual-enrollment program with the University of Florida. “These students have taken the most demanding curriculum we have to offer here at Pace from AP’s to dual enrollment courses, earning good grades and preparing for the SAT and or ACT,” said Pace college advisor Lilian Dubon. “They are involved on and off campus and are a true example of well roundedness. I’m so proud of our seniors.” As the University of Florida sends their acceptance letters earlier than other Florida universities, there will be more announcements from Pace High regarding college acceptances in the near future. Pace will also offer a college tour of Florida universities for its students in October 2015.

Spanish Lake Elementary selects 2015 Teacher of the Year and Rookie of the Year Spanish Lake Elementary (SLE) named Maria Vogel as Teacher of the Year and Elsa Ruiz as Rookie Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015. Vogel and Ruiz possess passion to make a positive difference in the lives of students. They are masters of their subjects and motivate students to learn in a most meaningful, relevant, enthusiastic way, according to school officials. A consummate educator and veteran teacher of 23 years with a kind heart, Vogel holds masters degrees in Educational Leadership and Master of Science in Education. Her love for her profession, sincere interest and concern for SLE students and staff are immediately evident with her expertise in teaching and learning styles, in-depth knowledge of curriculum, and infectious exuberance. Throughout the years Vogel has worn many hats in addition to her classroom teaching of math and science, such as school and district-wide seminar presenter, Science Fair chairperson, and math/science tutoring coordinator.

Presently, she is SLE’s Math coach and teaches fifth grade math. She is well-regarded and highly respected by students, parents, faculty members, and administration as someone who genuinely cares about each student and staff member’s development. She works to help them achieve their potential in a positive, effective, resourceful way. Ruiz is a native Floridian who grew up in a family of teachers. She had always dreamed of one day becoming a dedicated and motivational teacher, a dream she is now living. After graduating from Miami-Dade College in May 2013, she began working at Spanish Lake Elementary in August of the same year. With her soft-spoken voice, warm and nurturing classroom atmosphere, Ruiz provides for the individual needs of her students by effectively planning for large and small group instruction. Just as her teachers inspired her, she, too, is striving to develop her students into young adults who will be lifelong learners.

The Miami Lakes Congregational Church (MLCC) Concert Series presents a Spring Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 21 at the church, 6701 Miami Lakeway South. The Miami Chamber Players will perform music of Schubert and Vivaldi. The Franz Schubert compostition known as “The Trout Quintet” provides the hook for this performance. Otherwise known as the “Piano Quintet in A major,” this German Romantic-era gem is famed for its unusual instrument combo of piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. The South Florida-based ensemble will also feature

Antonio Vivaldi’s “Mandolin Concerto in C major.” The 1725 piece is notoriously difficult to play, and is one of the only major works expressly written for solo mandolin and orchestra. Performers for the concert include pianist and MLCC music director Adolfo Vidal, Rafael Ramirez (viola and mandolin), Mari-Lils Pakk (violin), Hernan Matute (double bass), and Jason Calloway (cello). The concert is free and a suggested donation of $15 will be accepted at the door. A free reception follows the concert. For more information, call the church office at 305-822-4313.

HML’s Advanced Art Class popular with students By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Mario Vazquez’s class is a work of art. And his art students at Hialeah Miami Lakes High School create some the best art designs through drawings, paintings, photography, pastels and digital technology that have won school contests throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Vazquez said the Advanced Placement class is so amazing that 230 students are enrolled in his art class, doubling the number of students from last year. “By popular demand,” Vazquez quipped. Vazquez said most of his students start off as not artistically talented but develop their skills and use art to express themselves and help beautify the schools with

Steven Solomon wins BGEC’s Black History Essay Contest Bob Graham Education Center congratulated Steven Solomon who won first place in the 5th Annual Black History Essay Contest. Solomon, along with his parents, Sofia Vasquez-Solomon and David Solomon, and his teacher Jackeline Hernandez celebrated his achievement in the United States District Court Southern District of Florida on February 25 with distinguished guests including the Honorable K. Michael Moore, the Honorable Marcia G. Cooke, Miami-Dade School Board attorney Walter J. Harvey, Robert C. Brazofsky from the M-DCPS Department of Social Sciences and members of United Teachers of Dade. Solomon’s essay emphasized the historical injustices faced by the Black community, the power of voting, and the impact it has on shaping communities.

Solomon said, “Voting is one of the most important rights of citizenship in this country, and one of the most important tools you have. It determines who will govern you and in many cases, how you will live for the period those elected officials are in power. This can have a serious impact on your life…it can create opportunities or take them away. If you vote, you are contributing to your society and giving yourself a better chance for a happier life.” The essay contest was sponsored by the Department of Social Sciences and the United Teachers of Dade for secondary students. The contest was held to enhance secondary school students’ writing skills while promoting an awareness of the 2015 Black History theme, “A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture.”

It increases school pride because everyone feels like they are part of the family.” The students do art through pencil drawings, paintings, photography and digital art, which includes photoshop and drop box. “Photography with technology is very popular,” Vazquez said. “The students really enjoy the program.” The Advanced Placement art program, which has an 80 percent passing rate, helps students prepare for college and art school. Vazquez said his students can earn three college credits. He said his students create their own art portfolio to submit to colleges and art schools of their choice. Some of the students entered their art work in popular art and drawing contests and won some of them, including Carina Zatarian, who was the 2014 grand prize winner of the Orange Bowl Creative Art Contest in the tri-county competition. Jimmie Parrot, a longtime Miami-Dade educator and football coach who helped ease racial tension at American High School by employing disciplinary actions and encouraging students to get along with their counterparts, died last month. He was 64. Parrot retired last year following a 44-year career, 33 years at American, where he taught students and was the defensive line and assistant coach for six different head coaches, including three consecutive district championships under Corey Bell. The Miami native graduated from Miami Jackson High School and played linebacker at Bethune Cookman College. Following college graduation, Parrot landed his first teaching job at Orchard Villa Elementary School in Liberty City. He later taught at Gladeview Elementary before the sour economy forced school officials to shut it down, and he was assigned to Hialeah Middle School. While working in the ESC Department, the school’s principal discovered Parrot had the niche to keep kids on the right track. But he wanted to coach high school football and when the opportunity surfaced, the principal at Hialeah Middle School did everything in her power to keep him there because he did a “great” job with the students. Eventually, Parrot was hired as a teacher and defensive line coach at American High at a time when racial tension among students boiled over and he stepped into the fray and eased the dissension by disciplining all students equally and coaxed them to love each

other because they were like a family attending the same school. He bridged the gap between hostility and understanding so much while, black and Latino students called him Papa Smurf, referring to the 1980s cartoon character raising a hundred smurfs in a tiny village. “It was right around the time the Smurfs were out and the kids called me Papa Smurf,” Parrot told The Miami Laker last year. “It wasn’t racial or negative, they just loved to call me Papa Smurf and it stuck with me for all these years.” Parrot said his only regret was not winning a state title for American. “After American was built, I always wanted to come here,” he

said. “I wanted to help kids and coach here.” Parrot said the most rewarding part of his job was seeing former students and athletes who graduated from college and become successful business people and good citizens. “They did the right thing,” Parrot said. “When they see me, they walk up and say now I get it. Everything you told me was right and they thanked me for it.” Following his retirement, Parrot said he had planned to devote a lot of time at his church and mentor his 5-year-old grandson. “It’s time to switch gears and do other things in my life,” he said. “I am going to miss being around my students, but I hope to still be involved in some capacity because my blood bleeds red, white and blue. The staff at American High expressed their condolences and called Parrot a legend. “For 34 years, Coach Jimmie Parrot has called American Senior High School home. The Patriot family is very proud of Coach Parrot’s devotion and loyalty to the students and faculty of our great school,” said the school’s website which paid tribute to him in a video.
