Charter Revision Commission:

Several early proposals have been eliminated; rest go to Town Council on March 16 By Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Charter Revision Commission finished its work on Monday and in a 5-1 vote, approved a final draft of recommended amendments that will go before Town voters at a date that was to be selected at a Special Call Town Council meeting on Wednesday. Commission member Roberto Alonso Jr. had been excused from the meeting earlier to attend his son’s birthday party, and member George Lopez was the lone dissenting vote. Prior to adopting the final draft,

the Commission, in a 4-3 vote, removed a contentious recommendation to revert four Council seats back to Districts thus requiring candidates to reside in their respective districts, but would still be voted on by all electors. The action left untouched the current Charter language for all Council seats to be “At-Large.” At a previous Commission meeting, members voted 4-3 to remove a proposal to allow council members to pick a mayor from their ranks to serve up to a twoyear term thus removing the may

Town beautification projects get underway during March In 2014, Miami Lakes adopted a town-wide Beautification Master Plan to serve as a vision and provide guidance as to what and how the physical environment within the Town should appear. The master plan addresses issues including median planting improvements, pocket-neighborhood park beautification, gateway entry features, crosswalk beautification, and other right-of-way improvements typical of most streetscape beautification projects. Last year, the Town began the initial phases of the master plan improvements by installing pavers at the bull noses of select media areas on Miami Lakes Drive, and in February, installed brick pavers at the crosswalk area on Bull Run Road and Main Street. This month, the Town will begin beautification and streetscape improvements at N.W. 154 Street and the Palmetto Expressway gateway with the installation of large palms, new

landscaping, and brick paver installation on the roadway. Alluding to the concerns of residents about increased traffic congestion while the work on Miami Lakes Drive is being done, the Town indicated that project will be done within three weeks with work scheduled on a 24-hour basis. Future projects include: • Construction of an entrance feature fountain and installation of landscaping at N.W. 67 Avenue and 138 Street gateway area; • Landscape enhancements at the N.W. 77 Court/154 Street intersection; • Gateway landscape and streetscape improvements at N.W. 67 Avenue and Palmetto Expressway and N.W. 87 Avenue and I-75 intersection. For more information on the planned improvements, visit www.miamilakes-fl.gov/beautification.

Charter Commission recommends mail ballot election for May 17 (Continued from Page 1) oral seat to be elected by voters. Several Commission members had received emails and phone calls from malcontent residents protesting the proposal. “After debating it and talking to people who I trust, I make a motion to rescind the mayoral rotation,” Commission member Mirtha Mendez said at the group’s February 29 meeting. Commission members Lopez, Claudia Luces and Ramiro Inguanzo voted in favor of Mendez’s motion, while chairman David Bennett, vice chair Alonso and Joshua Dieguez voted no. In the approved Report to the Town Council, the Commission requested a Special Election to be called on May 17 through a mail ballot process and asked that funds be appropriated for a Voter Guide to inform elector’s of the proposed amendments and revisions. If the election is held on May

17, any amendments approved by voters would take effect prior to the opening of the Qualifying Period on July 25 for the Town’s general election on November 8. The Commission’s final draft includes the following revisions and amendments: • The Town’s Form of Government would revert to the original Charter language of a “Council-Manager form of government” instead of the current “Mayor-Council-Manager form of government.” • Under “Powers and Duties of the Mayor,” the language “The Mayor shall recommend the appointment of a Town Manager to the Council” would be removed. • In the section covering “Vacancies; Forfeiture of Office; Filling of Vacancies,” the proposed revision states in part: “If the Mayor’s position becomes vacant, the Vice-Mayor shall complete the term of Mayor. The Council vacancy would be filled by nomination of the Mayor and confirmed by the Council. If the elected Mayor is returned to office, he/she shall automatically resume duties, the Vice Mayor would be returned to his/her Council position and the Council appointment would be rescinded. If the term of the Councilmember serving as Mayor expires prior to the expiration of the prior Mayor’s

term, there shall be a Special Election for the seat occupied by the Mayor at the time of election for said councilmember’s seat.” • In the section concerning the Town Manager, the revision proposes “The Town Manager shall be appointed by a majority vote of the Council solely on the basis of executive and administration qualifications, with special reference to actual experience or knowledge of the duties of Town Manager. The Town Manager shall be removed by a majority vote of the Council. The Council shall receive feedback from the community as to the nominees.” • Similar revisions are proposed concerning the appointment of a Town Attorney. • Regarding Special Meetings, the proposed revision removes the right of the Mayor to call a Special Meeting and leaves the call to at least four Councilmembers. • In the section concerning Elections, a proposed revision calls for a “Runoff Election” 21 days after a General Election. The section is further revised to provide that any candidate who receives a number greater than 50 percent of the total ballots cast, no runoff election is required. A Runoff Election would be held for the two candidates receiving the most votes in the General Election.

Town’s November general election has 12 running for 4 Countil seats David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes residents Jose Nodal Jr. and Cynthia Beyer are the latest candidates to file papers to run for seats on the Town Council, bringing the total number of office seekers to 12 for the town’s November general election. Nodal is among three aspirants challenging incumbent Tony Lama for Seat Three, while Beyer is joining a field campaigning for Seat Five, which was left open after Councilmember Manny Cid decided to shift his reelection bid to the mayoral race. Business woman Xiomara Pazos and novice Robin BrownBeamon are also challenging Lama’s bid for Seat 3, while Esther Colon, Nayib Hassan and Wendy Milanes are also seeking Seat Five. The mayoral race includes incumbent Mayor Michael Pizzi, Cid, fellow Council member Ceasar Mestre and former mayor Wayne Slaton. Albeit Pizzi told The Miami Laker last month that he has decided to seek a third term, he has yet

to open a campaign account and file papers with the Town Clerk. According to the town’s website for elections, Mestre is the campaign finance leader in the race having raised $30,465, while Cid has raised $24,480. Slaton has yet to file a campaign finance report. So far, Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez is running unopposed for Seat One. Lama said he welcomes the challengers, especially Pazos who unsuccessfully challenged Mestre for Seat 6 in 2014. “I welcome Ms. Pazos’s desire to become more involved in the town’s government, but residents expect candidates to be involved with the town and aware of the issues,” said Lama, who has raised $19,527. “Since Ms. Pazos’s challenge to Councilman Mestre in 2014, she has not engaged with the town through any one of our committees or been involved in finding solutions to our challenges, like traffic. Residents will expect to hear what she did during that time because being a member of the Miami Lakes Town Council requires

commitment and in many cases, personal sacrifice. In the same period, I have worked with other council members to tackle traffic, increase transparency, keep taxes low, and focus on beautification initiatives as I promised when I was first elected. I look forward to sharing my record of accomplishment with residents as the campaign unfolds.” Pazos said she’s challenging Lama’s reelection bid because he has failed the people in Miami Lakes and it is time for a change. “I am running for the Town Council because Miami Lakes needs more diversity, new ideas and less cronyism on the Town Council,” she said. “Currently, there are no females on the Town Council, and Mr. Lama is part of an insider group, or clique, that exercises no oversight, expresses no new ideas and that puts loyalty to the political machine ahead of the public benefit. “Councilman Lama spent over one million dollars of our tax

Council candidates outline their policies, platforms (Continued from Page 3) money to keep Mayor Pizzi from returning to office despite the fact that he was entitled to immediate reinstatement under the law. Lama went along with his colleagues and literally threw over one million in tax money down the drain to carry out his political agenda. For that reason alone, Lama has given up his right to serve.” Pazos said if elected, she plans to be an independent lawmaker who puts the needs of residents first, ethical and not waste tax money, address the traffic problem and fight to prevent an I-75 interchange at N.W. 154 and N.W. 170 streets. “I will vote to lower the tax rate and improve services for senior citizens and create more youth programs,” she added. “I will expand the economy and create jobs with businesses incentives.” Colon, who has raised $3,235, said she decided to run for political office for the first time to improve the community that she has lived in for 23 years.

“I have decided to run for council member because I am committed to improving Miami Lakes with my proven leadership, creativity, organization and planning skills,” she said. Colon touts her 32-year experience in government that would make her a good candidate, matching wits with the town’s administrators to help build a better Miami Lakes. She retired after working in local government where her duties included accounting, finance, budget, procurement, grants, risk management, human resources and debt management. “My depth of experience, enthusiasm and resourcefulness will deliver innovative solutions to Miami Lakes to help it thrive over the next four years and beyond,” she said. “I made the decision to run for councilwoman to be able to meet and greet my neighbors and to become a better informed candidate by doing my homework, research and attending council and charter review committee meet-

ings.” She said her political platform includes addressing the town’s financial position, traffic congestion and infrastructure. Colon, who was an adjunct professor at Brown Mackie College and accepted a part-time position as the alumni coordinator in the career services department, also is hoping to unite the community while she’s on the campaign trail. “We need to become a united community, not just east and west of Miami Lakes,” she said. “We can’t change the past, but together we can work to build a better future for all of the residents of Miami Lakes.” Colon is a member of the Zonta Club of Miami Lakes, a leading global organization empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Beyer, a registered nurse and firefighter paramedic, said she’s running to bring back the community feeling that Miami Lakes was once popular for, and address the traffic congestion and canal cleanup issues. “We need to work and create programs to bring that community feeling,” she said. “We need to bring that back.” The Virginia native said the traffic gridlock on N.W. 67 Avenue near her Windmill Gate community is a nightmare, caused by nonsynchronizing traffic lights at the intersection, and a high volume of drivers using the town as a short cut to reach their destinations. Beyer, 50, said she discovered that the right turn lane leading into her home was converted into a bus

lane, which could lead to many traffic accidents, she said. She called the town and county’s public works departments to report the problem and both entities subsequently fixed it. Beyer’s political platform also includes nixing government wasteful spending and putting taxpayers’ money to better use. “We could have more budget money to do most of good things and I want to be a part of it,” she said. Beyer said he’s been active in Miami Lakes since she moved here in 1989. She was president of the Windmill Gate Homeowners Association and a member of the Miami Lakes Neighborhood Improvement Committee. She said every Tuesday and Friday, she grabs a trash bag and picks up debris along the Biscayne Canal, and as a nurse she helps her neighbors receive medical attention after they injure themselves. “I am always helping people in the community because I am a nurse,” she said. “I have been active in the town for many years now and I do a lot of free public service.” Beyer graduated from MiamiDade College and earned her EMT from Broward Community College, and she was certified by the Broward County Fire Academy. Nodal has lived in Miami Lakes for 15 years and has been regularly attending council meetings and meetings where residents were pushing for incorporation. He said based on residents’ concerns, so many issues haven’t been resolved because council members are fighting with each other instead of working together to make Miami Lakes the best city to live in. “That has made me upset and sad,” he said. “That’s why I have decided to run. The place I call

home is not being taken seriously like residents would like it to be.” Nodal, a 35 year-old general contractor for home and building inspections, said the bickering among council members is hindering the goals and objectives set by residents in the town’s Strategic Plan and other proposals to reflect the incorporation vision. “The council is spending too much time trying to get each other in trouble and not getting things done,” he said. “It should be what the people want and not what the council wants.” Nodal, who was born in Hialeah, said if elected, he wants to be the people’s council member, listening to them and addressing their concerns, and his political platform includes increasing more awareness for education and recreation programs for kids and senior citizens. An anti-bullying program and Autism awareness are also on his list of priorities. Like most candidates and council members, Nodal wants to explore more ways to address the traffic gridlock in the town including along N.W. 67 Avenue and Miami Lakes Drive, where motorists are entering or exiting the Palmetto Expressway. He said he’s glad the town instructed police officers to direct traffic to make sure motorists are not blocking the box during rush hours, but more needs to be done to fix the bigger problems causing the traffic tie-ups. “We need real solutions to real problems, and no one has addressed the real problems,” he said. Nodal earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Florida Atlantic University. Hassan, Milanes and BrownBeamon did not submit their information as requested by press time.

Special Recognitions were given to school leaders in attendance from Barbara Goleman Senior High, Bob Graham Education Center, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College, and Miami Lakes Middle School. Barbara Goleman principal Joaquin Hernandez was awarded a Proclamation for his exceptional contribution to the school in making it an “A” school for the first

Special Recognitions were also awarded to two student groups from Bob Graham Education Center including the Bobcat Law Society and the Bobcat Dance Team for their achievements in recent competitions. In addition, North Region superintendent Vivian SatiestebanPardo and Region director Jose Bueno were recognized for their continuous support in making certain all areas are carefully and equally monitored to ensure that children are given the best envi-

ronment for academic success. “It was well deserved to honor these educators as they contribute so much to the fabric of our community,” said Councilmember Ceasar Mestre. “It’s important to also recognize, foster, and promote outstanding student leadership as well as their academic achievements, and these children are cer-

tainly deserving of such acknowledgment. Our town is proud of their commitment and continued exceptional accomplishments.” “Every morning, we entrust the care and education of our children to the teachers and administrators of our Miami Lakes schools,” said Councilmember Tony Lama. “Our children spend the majority of

their days with their teachers and friends. That is no easy task and one that is often under-appreciated. This was our way of saying ‘thank you’ and to recognize the great work they are doing with our children. We continue to have some of the best schools in MiamiDade County right here in our town.”

Town’s drainage improvement grants included in state budget Thanks to the efforts of State Representatives Manny Diaz Jr. and Jose Oliva, and Miami Lakes Council members Ceasar Mestre and Frank Mingo, the town is expecting to receive $400,000 for the critical West Lakes Drainage Improvements project, as the state finalized its $82 billion budget last week on the last day of the 2016 Legislative Session. The allocated funds would ensure Miami Lakes could continue working on Phase B, C, and D of the project. Governor Rick Scott can sign off on funding for the project or veto it along with other line item projects. Nevertheless, state lawmakers and council members were pleased over what their partnership accomplished to improve quality services in Miami Lakes. “This project is important to

protect residents and property from damage and flooding” said Diaz. “Working with Chairman Oliva and the Miami Lakes Town Council has benefited the people of Miami Lakes.” The West Lakes community, in the southwestern portion of the town, continues to be adversely impacted by flooding events, with rainwater reaching residential garages and covering streets and sidewalks. Heavy rainfall events resulted in property damage for many of the 1,361 homes located in the project area, with three properties already designated as Repetitive Loss Properties. The area has suffered various flooding and is addressed as a priority project in the town’s Storm Water Master Plan, including a listing of the potential areas requiring mitigation.

Straightforward Tips For Small Businesses By Michael Huffaker, Franchise Owner Express Employment Professionals 4 Ways Leaders Can Help Their Business Grow As a business leader, there is constant competition for your attention – customer crises, operation decisions, employee issues, and future planning, just to name a few. With all you have to do, it’s easy to become unaware of what’s going on around you. And that lack of awareness can have serious consequences. To stay up to date and keep your business growing, here are four things every leader should do: 1. Listen to Fresh Perspectives Business leaders must learn to listen to fresh perspectives in order to keep their ideas and businesses from going stale. US News highlighted an emerging trend of senior executives being mentored by young, entry-level professionals on issues like technology, culture and social media. This reverse mentoring phenomenon has already been adopted by big-name companies such as Johnson & Johnson, GE, and Cisco, and it’s having a two-fold effect. Not only is it helping to make babyboomer executives technologically and socially relevant, it’s also helping businesses retain eager millennial employees. As you know, innovation is the key to success in today’s business world. “Business must look ahead, not behind...Every business must innovate to compete. They must create new products and services for new markets,” said Scott MacFarland, a digital marketer and brand strategist. There are definitely tried and true business principles that stand the test of time, but the way in which you implement and communicate those principles to your employees, customers, and the general public continues to change. 2. Embrace the Latest Technology Second, leaders have to learn to embrace technology. Michael Robson, general manager of General Assembly’s enterprise business, told The Wall Street Journal, “Ninety-nine

percent of executives say [digital growth] is important, but only 10 percent of companies are satisfied with the speed at which they are making the transition.” To keep their companies from falling behind, many executives and managers are now taking lessons on how the online world works. But these technology lessons aren’t just about digital terminology or how to use social media. “They put the service in context, explaining which strategies work and what a company’s competitors have done,” said Gretchen VanEsselstyn, director of education at Mediabistro Inc., a media job board and training site. This enables leaders to make wiser decisions on what to invest in and how to guide their growing business. 3. Stay Engaged Business leaders also have to learn to stay involved and connected to their team. With all the responsibilities associated with leadership, it’s so easy to push connecting with employees, and even customers, into the background. However, it’s vital that leaders are always talking with, and listening to, their employees and customers. This communication is how leadership can monitor the pulse of engagement, production and morale. 4. Embrace the Entreperneurial Spirit Glenn Llopis, president of a business strategy consulting firm, pointed out in a Forbes article that today’s leaders must think like entrepreneurs. “They need to view their departments and/or functional areas like a small business that is constantly looking for creative, resourceful and cost efficient ways to grow and compete profitably.” This is what will enable leaders to be proactive and instigate changes before they’re forced to. Leaders who continue to learn, engage, and grow, enable their businesses to go far beyond where they’re at today and reach the level of success they’ve long aspired to.

Town, County work on N.W. 67 Avenue traffic relief A traffic safety issue at the intersection of N.W. 67 Avenue and Windmill Gate Road in Miami Lakes took a turn for the worse last month when two back-to-back accidents left several people seriously injured and had to be airlifted to the hospital. Traffic congestion in the area poses a safety hazard for motorists and pedestrians, as vehicles have little room to make right or left turns on the two-lane road leading in and out of the residential community, hindered by a bus shelter and pavement markings in front of the commercial area. The traffic along Ludlam Road is backed up for almost a mile between the Palmetto Expressway and Miami Lakeway South during rush hours, making it difficult for motorists to exit or enter the resi-

dential community near the library and shopping center. To eschew more tragedies, Miami Lakes and Miami-Dade officials met recently in the town to address the bottleneck and safety issues. According to a report furnished by the town, Miami-Dade put a signal change for the southbound easternmost left lane at Windmill Gate, a protected left turn only and not permissive. Vehicles can only make a left turn on a green arrow. In addition, Miami Lakes said the county removed the chevron striping pavement marking on the easternmost northbound right lane in front of the shopping center. For additional changes, the town will move the bus shelter and bus stop sign about 200 feet south to give motorists enough room to

make a right turn at the intersection at Windmill Gate Road and Ludlum Road. Miami Lakes and the county also hashed out long term solutions, including adding an additional through lane northbound on Ludlum Road between Loch Ness Drive and the Palmetto Expressway to add capacity and enhance the mobility and safety near the

intersections; acquiring additional right-of-way from the MiamiDade fire station to allow an additional northbound lane on N.W. 67 Avenue; reducing the median widths along N.W. 67 Avenue or reducing the lane widths to 10 feet to add an additional northbound lane; and removing the traffic separator located on the easternmost right lane near the Palmetto

Expressway to allow the easternmost right lane to be a dedicated through and right turn lane. In conjunction with the busy roadway improvements, Miami Lakes is working with the county to widen Windmill Gate Road to four lanes to alleviate gridlock by acquiring a portion of the right-ofway from the Miami-Dade library.

Lakes resident Ramiro Inguanzo named to transportation task force Miami Lakes resident Ramiro Inguanzo was recently appointed by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez to serve on his Local Action Team Task Force for Safer People, Safer Streets. The task force is charged with developing an action plan of high level legislative, educational, engineering and enforcement recommendations to improve the safety of Miami-Dade’s streets. The County has brought together representatives from various fields to reduce bicycle and pedestrian fatalities and injuries. “Given the Town's recent legislative efforts and focus on traffic and transportation issues, I think that my appointment to this Task Force is timely and I plan to make

sure I keep the Town's needs in mind when making recommendations,” said Inguanzo. Inguanzo joins a host of other appointed action members from law firms, health foundations, transportation advisory committees, and more to research existing practices, identify national best practices to be adopted in MiamiDade; hold a public meeting to solicit input, and expects to release its findings in March. Task force members include representatives from FDOT District 6; Miami-Dade Transportation and Public Works, Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust, and newly installed Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez.

Bob Graham Education Ctr.’s Bobcat Dance Team donates shoes to Camillus House The Bob Graham Education Center Bobcat Dance Team helped the homeless of Camillus House on Wednesday, February 24. Coach Mayri Martinez, along with Yesse Ruano, a dance team mom, decided to join with Life Coach Nancy for a women’s empowerment act to help Miami’s homeless men that are in need of shoes. The team and coaches held a drive and almost 100 pairs of shoes were delivered in late

February to Camillus House for the homeless. Camillus House is a ministry that feeds the hungry and provides showers and clean clothing for the homeless. Dance team members participated alongside their parents. “It is wonderful to see them sharing love with the needy and to the streets of Miami,” said principal Yecenia Martinez-Perez. “This is a great way to show an act of kindness.”

Our Lady of the Lakes accepts AED donation from Vergara Foundation Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School accepted a donation of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) from the Breanna Vergara Foundation, and with the help of the school’s Dads’ Club, the school will now offer the required training to all the teachers and staff on how to use the machine. The Foundation was named after the 11-year-old Miami Lakes resident, who died of a rare heart condition after she collapsed during dance practice in 2014. Her mother, Claudia Vergara, said her daughter died from preexisting Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a congenital heart defect that is curable when it is detected with an EKG. The Foundation is pushing to make sure all kids who participate in sports and other physical activities in Miami Lakes have a free EKG at local hospitals to detect any heart conditions that can save their lives. “The Breanna Vergara Foundation promotes a healthy, happy, and passionate lifestyle by offering opportunities for children to participate in extracurricular activities while also creating awareness of heart screenings in an effort to identify kids at risk of sudden cardiac arrest,” the Foundation’s website says.

Dade Christian’s athletic director Steve Fitzgerald outlines current successes By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff In Steve Fitzgerald’s first season as Dade Christian’s athletic director, the school considers this year’s athletic programs a success. The varsity football team reached the regional playoffs under first year head coach Nick Martinez, the basketball team also advanced to the regional postseason, the girls’ volleyball team won its regional quarterfinal game, the track and field team is running through their opponents during track meets and the baseball team is pushing hard to join the school’s winning teams. Fitzgerald said the football team was expected to compete at a high level and accomplished the modest goal of winning the district title. “We expected them to do well and they were one game away from the state tournament,” said Fitzgerald, who is also the school’s head coach for the boy’s basketball team.

Milton Ingram, who plays basketball and football, and runs track and field for the Crusaders, helped the two teams reach the playoffs, and hopes to do the same for the team’s track meets. The 6’3, 200-pound defensive end recorded 38 tackles (12 solo) and six sacks this past season. In track and field, he is ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 2 in the nation for shot put. In basketball, he came off the bench and gave his team a spark that resulted in a push in the regional postseason. Dorren Mercer, Dade Christian’s long-time track and field coach, said the team is preparing for several highly competitive track meets enroute to the district competition. She said Dwayne Terry and Adule Abadi are ready to pick off where they left off last season. Terry, also a football player who was named to the Associated Press team and The Miami-Herald AllDade team this season, advanced to state in the long jump.

his high school wrestling career on top by winning the FHSAA 2016 1A 138lb State Wrestling Championship on March 5. Perez dominated competitors in his matches at the FHSAA State Wrestling Championships, defeating his three quarter and semi-final opponents in just over a minute total before eventually defeating Key West High School’s Caleb Ashe 7-0 in the finals. Perez’ big victory came just a few hours after his wrestling coach Frank Pelegri was inducted into the Florida High School Wrestling Hall of Fame during a special ceremony at the Championships. Pelegri, who has coached wrestling at Pace for nearly 20 years, was inducted into the Pace Hall of Fame last October and will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame this August. Pelegri described having two such important moments so close to each other as “heavenly,” and credits his and Alex’ faith in God for their success.

HML’s Science National Honor Society participates in SECME competition at M-D College Hialeah Miami Lakes High School’s Science National Honor Society (SNHS) participated in this year's SECME competition at MDC North campus. The students competed in several events including egg drop, bottle rocket, and mouse trap car. Each of these involved hands-on experience and the students were able to perform exceptionally better than any year before. The mouse trap car, done by Ashley Figueras and Tania Loaiza, traveled a total of 24 feet; the most it's ever traveled in the years HML

has participated in the competition. The bottle rocket, done by Alexandra Ochoa, Jessica Lorenzo, Rabia Imran, and Natalie Alba, exceed any hang time students in the past years accomplished. The egg drop, done by Daniela Martinez, Jairo Rocha, and Yailin Cubas, managed to pass the first round without cracking the egg. Overall, the competition proved to be successful. Students in SNHS next year will gain from the experience and hopefully continue to better their performance.

M. Lakes Congregational Church hosts Chamber Concert on March 19 Miami Lakes Congregational Church’s concert series continues on March 19 with a varied program featuring the Piano Quartet #1 in G minor by J. Brahms and songs by Lecuona. The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., features an exciting work by the German composer, a 28-year-old Brahms wrote his ambitious Piano Quartet No 1 in G minor in 1861. It will be performed by the Miami Chamber Players. The third composition in what would become an oeuvre of some 26 chamber music masterworks, the Quartet enjoys a fine reputation in no small part because of the vigorously effective Gypsy Rondo itself. The finale is indeed a tour-deforce of rhythmic and melodic bravado where the sectional form of the Rondo serves as a brilliant

The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical ingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left above). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right above.) This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damanged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past fifteen years. For more information and to read more on “The Knee Diaries,” please visit www.arthritisusa.net or call (305) 866-8384.
