Major Gene Dieppa named Miami Lakes Town Commander............(See Page 5)

Slaton fires town attorney firm; Construction starts on new fire station council approves hiring local firm Gastesi and Associates By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Flexing his political muscle, Miami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton fired the town attorney and litigation counsel and subsequently hired a lawyer to handle both legal services for less money, severing ties with the law firm he holds responsible for allowing the town to award a working contract to a bogus company. The business was a front for the FBI to help nab former Mayor Michael Pizzi on public corruption charges in a federal sting that also brought down former Sweetwater Mayor Manuel Marono and two lobbyists. During an October 30 special meeting, councilmembers on a 5-1 vote supported Slaton’s decision to terminate Geller, Greenspoon and Marder and another law firm, Genovese, Joblove and Battista, that handled litigation for Miami Lakes in a cost-cutting move to pave the way for bringing in Gastesi and Associates. The law firm is led by long-

time resident Raul Gastesi, who rendered legal advice during the incorporation crusade. The termination for Geller’s firm becomes effective in 30 days. Gastesi and Associates’ contract was on the council’s November 12 regular meeting agenda with an effective date of November 30. Councilmember Tony Lama cast the sole dissenting vote on firing the town attorney, saying the mayor’s move was politically motivated, and he was unaware of any poor performance that called for termination. Lama, however, voted for Miami Lakes-based Gastesi and Associates with the condition the new town attorney’s contract includes an evaluation after 90 days on the job. Under the town charter, the mayor has the power to hire and fire the town attorney but his recommendations must be approved by councilmembers. “I am recommending the town attorney be replaced,” said Slaton,

Eagle Scout project completed for Veterans Day

Life Scout Branden Bravo of Our Lady of the Lakes Boy Scout Troop 566 in Miami Lakes completed his Eagle Scout community service project honoring veterans at the Alexander Nininger State Veterans Nursing Home in Pembroke Pines in time for the Veterans Day holiday. The nursing home is a state funded facility, so funds are limited for non-essential items such as landscaping beautification projects. His project consisted of converting the current unattractive and dull patio at the home into an appealing landscape with a special tribute memorial garden area for veterans and visitors to reflect on the services these Vietnam, Korean, and even WWII veterans provided to the country while giving them a pleasant place to enjoy the Florida sunshine. Bravo spearheaded the execu-

tion of “Operation Honoring Our Forgotten Vets” along with family, friends, and fellow troop members on October 26. Hands were busy from pulling weeds, shoveling rocks, planting palm trees, flowers, plants, grass, assembling a birdbath and bird feeder, to setting a boulder with a plaque honoring all the veterans. Five stepping stones, representing each military branch with its name engraved on the stones, were all a part of his special memorial garden tribute. When asked why he decided to undertake this venture as his Eagle Project, Bravo replied “I’ve always had great respect and admiration for these special men and women of uniform. There is no price to the acts of courage and sacrifices they gave in preserving the freedom and liberty we all enjoy today. Giving back to them is the least we can do and I wanted

to show my appreciation to them just in time for Veterans Day.” Oscar Correale, supervisor of Recreation Therapy at the state veteran’s nursing home says that the veterans can’t get enough of the newly renovated patio. “They love the new look the patio has and they are so grateful to this young man for thinking of them” said Correale. Commitment and service to the community and country runs in Bravo’s family. Bravo has relatives currently in the military – a brother (Rick) who is a midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, a former Troop 566 Venture member; and a cousin, also a former Troop 566 and Eagle Scout (Adrian Quintana) in the Marine Corps at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina.

Miami Lakes and MDFR officials break ground on new Fire Rescue Station 64 Officials from Miami Lakes and Miami-Dade County broke ground to start construction on the long-awaited Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 64 to help achieve a faster response time for emergencies on the west side of town. Through a partnership between the state, county and town, the facility is ready to be built, and the officials gathered at the event expressed special thanks to former Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso, who discovered the FDOT-owned land in 2006. Alonso died of cancer last month. Miami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton thanked those in attendance including State Representative

Manny Diaz Jr., County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Director Chief Dave Downey. Slaton also recognized members of the Alonso family who were present for the groundbreaking. Located on the corner of N.W. 154 Street and 77 Court, Station 64 will be a 13,512 square-foot Silver LEED Certified, two-story, three-bay Fire Rescue facility which will accommodate up to 12 firefighters. The facility will include a bunker gear room, storage space, a work area, offices, dining room, day room, study room, exercise room, telecommunications room,

After many years of planning, Miami Lakes Fire Rescue Station Number 64 is slated to be fully operational by 2014. "Thanks to the vision of former Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso, this new fire station will be a symbol of pride in our community for many years to come," stated Vice Mayor Manny Cid.

Slaton nominates Gastesi & Associates as town attorney (Continued from Page 1) the town’s first mayor for eight years who won the October 1 special election to replace Pizzi. “It will absolutely save the town money because Miami Lakes has been overpaying tremendously on the town attorney position and for litigation.” Slaton said Geller’s law firm billed the town about $18,500 a month plus additional charges, and Genovese, Joblove and Battista was paid about $7,000 a month but hadn’t done any litigation work for Miami Lakes. All in all, Geller earned about $300,000 a year and Genovese was set to make about $84,000 by the end of 2013 had the law firm not been terminated. “That’s a lot of money,” Slaton said. “We have a local law firm like many people suggested with

more than one attorney to do the same type of work for far less and perform litigation service when needed. Money saved can be used for other municipal services.” Gastesi and Associates has agreed to do the legal work for $12,500 a month and an additional $200 an hour for litigation when it is needed, Slaton said. “I think it’s important we have a local firm that can be more accessible,” Slaton said. “He can be here in five minutes under any circumstance when the town manager calls for him.” The political scandal that led to the arrest of Pizzi was another reason why Slaton called for the firing of the town attorney. He said the law firm should’ve raised a red flag before a resolution to hire the phony business was placed on the meeting agenda.

All batteries & accessories to weather the storm

“I am disappointed at the present situation we found ourselves in before I was elected,” he said. “At the heart of the scandal was a bogus program and nothing was said on the dais or no legal advice on the issue.” Slaton allowed Joseph Geller to speak in his own defense. The attorney said had the measure gone through the proper or normal procedure, he would have discovered the problem. He said the following day, he determined something was amiss and notified town staff after the measure was approved. But nothing was done to revisit or rescind the accord until the scandal came to light. “If the issue was done in a normal way and given to us in advance, we would have discovered any problems and spoken up on the dais,” Geller said. For attorney costs, Geller said when his law firm was brought in to replace Weiss, Serota and Boninske in 2011, the lawyers left open the opportunity to renegotiate a reduced fee. But town staff and councilmembers never broached the issue. “We would’ve been willing to discuss with the town any compensation issues,” Geller said. “We would love to continue our service but whatever decision you make, we are proud of the quality of service provided to the town.”

Hurricane Preparedness

Several councilmembers initially weren’t ready to fire the town attorney without first looking at a pool of candidates with good qualifications to replace the Geller group. But they eventually changed their minds after Slaton said it’s important for Miami Lakes to proceed while saving some money, and divulged Gastesi as his leading candidate because he’s familiar with town-wide issues. Lama, however, voted against firing the town attorney, saying it was politically motivated. In a fiery dialogue, Lama questioned the timing of Slaton’s decision, saying he read a newspaper article which mentioned the new mayor’s plans for Geller and his lawyers. “In The Miami Herald article, one of your moves is to remove the town attorney,” Lama said. “You do have that power but councilmembers have the final decision. But I find it premature and disrespectful to the work of Geller and his firm because of the good work they did for us.” On performance, Lama said the town should’ve first resolved any issues with the town attorney before taking action to fire the law firm. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre said he knew Gastesi since they were kids, and they went to law school together at the University

of Miami and worked together on some legal cases. “We worked on some cases and referred some cases to each other,” said Mestre, who was a member of a Miami Lakes committee to study the pros and cons of hiring an inhouse counsel. “He knows the town better than most of us up here and I feel comfortable working with him.” Vice Mayor Manny Cid recused himself on the vote to hire Gastesi citing a conflict of interest. Gastesi, 50, unsuccessfully ran for a Town Council seat in 2002 and was chairman of the 2006 Miami Lakes Charter Review Committee. Before councilmembers voted for Gastesi’s law firm, they asked him to tell them more about himself and his law practice. Gastesi said he grew up in the area and a law firm hired him following law school, where he became a partner in just six years. He started his own law firm in Coral Gables and later moved it to Miami Lakes, buying his own office building to accommodate his legal staff and clients. Gastesi, an attorney for more than 20 years, doesn’t like to toot his own horn but told councilmembers he has the vast experience to handle municipal issues and litigation.

Historically, it has been costly, difficult and time-consuming to receive traffic data. This device will provide the town with valuable data used by transportation engineers to help create livable streets. The town will now be able to work effectively with transportation agencies, property developers/owners, and others who are engaged in making decisions about transportation. By creating open-data, the town can increase governmental transparency and provide constituents with the essential data needed to advocate for rational and necessary improvements to the design, maintenance, and policy of transportation systems. “Nancy Gibbs, Time Magazine’s new managing editor, recently wrote: ‘We are living

through the most immense transfer of power from institutions to individuals in history. Technology has picked the locks of power.’ This is exactly what the traffic counter is all about, empowering people,” said Vice Mayor Manny Cid.

Orange Theory Fitness clients report health and wellness success at Royal Oaks facility Nine months ago, Miami Lakes resident Alex Garcia and his wife, Sara Castillo, opened their Orange Theory Fitness (OTF) franchise inside the Royal Oaks Shopping Plaza. Orange Theory is a one-of-akind workout system broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training, using a variety of equipment including treadmills, rowing machines, TRX suspension training and free weights, to tone the average fitness body and gain energy throughout the day. Garcia said Miami Lakes area residents have responded enthusiastically over Orange Theory’s workout regimes and the facility’s passionate professional trainers. Orange Theory released successful testimonials from two of its members – Rafael Pizarro, 40years-old, and Alina Linares, 44years-old. Pizarro became a member in February with medical and physical goals he had to meet. His mother passed away in December 2012 from stomach cancer. He said her lack of exercise and bad eating habits did not help her cause. That was his motivation to start taking care of his health and body. Pizarro, a father of two children, 2 and 5-years-old, now makes time to exercise four to five times a week with 100 percent support from his wife, Ileana. Before he joined OTF, Pizarro had diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, anxiety disorder and no doctor visits for 10 years. He was a member at a local gym for four years and only attended 20 times. After joining OTF, all of Pizarro’s medical levels are con-

trolled and he has enjoyed significant physical transformation including weight down from 294 to 252 pounds in six months, pants size down from 48” to 40”, and shirt size down from 3XL to XL, Pizarro was able to pass the physical exam to get his DOT certification and he completed his first mud run 5K in April. “Orange Theory motivates me,” he said. “If I would go now to a normal gym, I wouldn’t be motivated.” Alina Linares also joined OTF in February. Prior to that, her exercise routine consisted of 45 minutes on a treadmill and no weight training four times a week at a local gym. She followed the routine for four months and saw no success. Other than losing weight, Linares’ main goal was to better her health and as a diabetic, she wanted to discontinue the use of insulin injections. She proudly reports that OTF has helped her accomplish that goal and is now off insulin. Along the way she also lost 25 pounds. “I have more energy now and I’m not bored coming to the gym like I was before,” she said. “It’s a change of lifestyle. I get frustrated when I don’t work out now.” Linares said a big motivating factor is the heart rate monitor system that displays on the screen with her name. “I feel motivated watching the calories that I’m burning on the screen.” Orange Theory Fitness is located at 15490-B N.W. 77 Court in the Royal Oaks Shopping Plaza. Town Hall meeting features updates on 87 Avenue work; expansion of natural gas lines Northwest 87th Avenue between 154 and 162 streets will be open by next year and westside Miami Lakes residents who own natural gas hybrid cars may not have to leave home in the future to gas up. During a town hall meeting on November 5 at the Roberto Alonso Community Center at Royal Oaks Park, repesentatives from Miami-Dade Public Works and Acosta Tractors, the contractors opening up the roadway to alleviate traffic and unite residents on the west side of town, said the project should be completed sometime in 2014. In addition, a related project to add two additional lanes on Miami Lakes Drive between 87 and 84 avenues is expected to be finished by next month. The town announced some traffic flow changes on Miami Lakes Drive at N.W. 87 Avenue and the closure of Miami Lakes Drive between 87 and 89 avenues which began on November 11 and will continue for approximately a month. The meeting, called by

Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, gave residents an opportunity to voice their concerns, including speeding, traffic signal light placement and adding bike paths along the roadway. Florida City Gas is the provider for natural gas in the area and officials educated the residents on the use and availability of bringing gas lines to the homes in the northwest area of Miami Lakes. Officials stated that residential gas lines are already in the area of 87 Ave. between Miami Lakes Drive and NW 170th Street. Rebate options for switching over to natural gas were also discussed. Residents were impressed with the large amount of financial savings they could gain by switching over to gas. The gas company stated that within ten years natural gas/gasoline combination cars will be available to the general public. They are currently working on a residential filling station which would allow drivers to fill their car at home rather than at a local station.

Town Council proposed actions on November 12 By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Town Manager Alex Rey has requested a fouryear contract extension but his proposal must initially be approved by councilmembers to allow the veteran and savvy top administrator to resume running the day-to-day operations after 2015.

At the November 12 regular Town Council meeting, lawmakers were to vote or perhaps postpone the elongation request, where Rey broached the issue as his contract expires on October 1, 2015. He’s seeking an extension until March 31, 2019, and a one percent pay raise consistent with the Cost of Living Adjustments granted to government employees.

Rey would earn a $189,000 annual salary in addition to health benefits, a car allowance, travel and miscellaneous expenses. According to Rey’s contract, the Town must evaluate his performance at least once a year within 30 days of his anniversary hiring date, in which he can receive a bonus equal to four percent of his annual base salary. The Miami Beach resident is currently in his second stint as town manager for Miami Lakes. Mayor Wayne Slaton hired him in 2002 but lawmakers put his contract extension request on hold in 2008 during an election year. Slaton decided not to run for reelection and Michael Pizzi, who won the mayoral race, said he wanted to keep Rey but he had already accepted Miami Beach’s offer to be its building director before the election. Pizzi brought Rey back in 2010 to replace Frank Bocanegra, who was forced to retire as part of the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) in order to collect his pension earned as a Miami-Dade police officer for more than 30 years. In other Town Council news: • Lawmakers on second reading were expected to approve an ordinance that would allow residents to decide through a referendum whether to increase the size of the

town through annexation. • Councilmembers on second reading were expected to approve an ordinance to revise the town’s election campaign finance and reporting law to revert to state law, which was substantially modified in 2013. The new law provides substantial additional reporting requirements, including contribution limits. • Lawmakers on second reading were expected to approve an ordinance limiting the mayor to having one assistant to help him with town business. • Councilmembers were expected to approve an ordinance on first reading to amend the rules and regulation regarding zoning appeals. The proposed ordinance calls for the Town Council to review zoning appeals but only by a super majority vote of 5-2 instead of 4-3. Vice Mayor Manny Cid made the recommendation at the October 8 regular Town Council meeting, saying it’s too expensive and cumbersome for applicants’ appeals to be handled by the courts after their plans were rejected by the town’s Zoning and Planning Board. • Councilmembers were expected to approve a contract with Gastesi and Associates P.A. for town attorney services for $12,500 a month plus expenses and $200

an hour for litigation services when it is needed. • Lawmakers were expected to approve a resolution by Councilmember Frank Mingo to create a Par 3 Committee to make recommendations to councilmembers whether to purchase and how to best utilize the golf course property. • Councilmembers were expected to approve Cid’s request for town staff to create a local housing trust fund in order to participate in the State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program. SHIP funds will be used for emergency, life safety repairs to keep most vulnerable residents, housed and prevent unnecessary institutionalization. • Lawmakers were expected to approve Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez’s motion for a 90-day evaluation period to analyze what Miami Lakes has done and where the town is at. The request comes as the town is preparing to move forward with updating the Strategic and Comprehensive Plans. • Lawmakers were expected to approve Councilmember Tony Lama’s proposal to ask the town manager to allocate up to $50,000 for state and county legislative services, and put out a formal solicitation, and for the town manager to put together a formal evaluation team made up of town staff and members of the community.

Graham Cos. executive visits MD College’s ‘Year Up’ group On October 11, Andrea Graham Rechichi of The Graham Companies was the guest speaker for the students of “Year Up” during their weekly “Friday Feedback” at Miami Dade College’s North Campus. Throughout the fall semester, students that are participating in the Year Up program have weekly sessions where professionals from the business world come in to share their personal career paths as well as other insightful information about the business world and items such as the importance of obtaining a college degree. In January, these students will embark on a six-month internship and put their new skills to work. The students participating all live in the Miami Gardens, Opa

Locka and Hialeah areas and are very familiar with Miami Lakes. They were surprised to meet a member of the family business that “owns the cows by Main Street.” Year Up’s mission is to close the opportunity divide providing urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. Year Up achieves this mission through a high support, high expectation model that combines marketable job skills, stipends, internships and college credits. Year Up is partnered with Miami Dade College at both the Wolfson and North Campus.

Four Hialeah Gardens alumni join Barry basketball By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Hialeah Gardens High will see five familiar faces on the Barry University men’s basketball team, the same group that was part of the

school’s first state championship in just its third year of existence. Sophomore forward Yunio Barrueta and freshmen players guard Adrian Gonzalez, forward Alvaro Simoza and guard Philly

FORMER HIALEAH GARDENS HIGH players, now Barry University teammates Junior Barrueta, Adrian Gonzalez, coach Marcos Molina, Alvaro Simoza and Philly Leonardo flash their Photo by Jim McCurdy 2012 state championship rings.

Leonardo were members of the Gladiators’ 2012 state championship team and hope their high school success can spill over to college basketball. And the man who guided the team to the pinnacle of high school basketball can help them on the college stage as well. In August, former Gladiators’ head coach Marcos Molina joined the college team as one of the new volunteer assistant coaches to help Buccaneers’ freshmen players adjust to college basketball under new head coach Butch Estes. The NCAA Division II school plays in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC). “I think it will be a little easier for them to make a transition from high school to college now,” said Molina. The players’ decision to attend the same college coined the phrase, “Those who play together, stay together.”

After playing one year of college basketball at East Tennessee State, Barrueta transferred to Barry University to be reunited with his teammates and former head coach. He left Tennessee after the team’s head coach was fired and the program was in shambles. “The assistant coach who recruited me also left the team, and then rumors began that the new head coach was planning to leave as well,” he said. “While I was home in Miami, I talked to my former teammates and they said they were going to Barry and I thought it would be a good idea to join them.” Barrueta was more exulted that Molina joined the Buccaneers’ coaching staff. He said Molina coached him in middle school and high school and now in college. “We kept that bond going,” Barrueta said. The Buccaneers’ new players believe their solidarity can help the team on the basketball court, and bonding with their new teammates wasn’t a problem. “We are bonding great with our teammates,” said Gonzalez, who initially chose Lynn University but enrolled at Barry after the entire coaching staff was fired. The players share the same goal of winning a national championship at Barry University. But the freshmen players acknowledged the challenge in high school is more arduous in college, as they’re learning a rash of defensive schemes to keep their opponents at bay. “The defense is incredibly hard,” Gonzalez said. “We have to work that much harder in college. High school was much easier because we knew we can beat a lot of teams, but in college, anyone can be beaten on any given night.” Molina said the basketball program he ran at Hialeah Gardens helped prepare the players to make the transition to college. “At Hialeah Gardens, it was like running a college program,

with the hard practices, working out in the weight room and conditioning drills,” he said. Molina said he initially stepped down as the Gladiators’ head coach following last season to take some time off and spend time with his family. Heading up the program for four years took a toll on him. But when Estes, a longtime friend of his, got the head coaching job at Barry University and started recruiting players, Molina recommended the four players he coached to the state championship. The players have a lot of family members in Miami and wanted to stay in town and play together. With a lot of convincing, Estes picked them up, along with Barrueta, and subsequently offered Molina an assistant coaching job. “It was an extremely difficult decision and very emotional,” Molina said. “After I had taken some time off, Estes made it easier for me to make the transition to the college level.” Barrueta said he advised his former Gladiators’ teammates to just be patient and be ready when their chances come. “They have to understand their role as freshmen” he said. “They are not going to get a lot of playing time, but they must remain positive at all times and have their minds right so when they are called to play, they will be ready mentally.” Like each season, Barry University is seeking to add more accolades, ultimately a national championship, to the annals of Buccaneers’ basketball and the four former Gladiators’ players are shooting for those marks. The Buccaneers made three NCAA Tournament appearances and won the Sunshine State Conference in 2007, Defensive National Championship in 2003 and the 2004 Disney Division II Tip-off Classic crown. Barrueta said the team’s No. 1 goal is to put the Buccaneers’ on the NCAA Tournament map.

Jonathan Spicer named American’s Patriot of the Month By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff American High senior Jonathan Spicer is wearing many hats during the 2013-2014 school year. He’s the team captain for the boys’ basketball team for the third consecutive season, and a fouryear starter for the upcoming season. And what better way for Spicer to kick off his senior year in basketball than being named Patriot of the Month for November for his accomplishments on the court and in the classroom. The Patriots face district rival Hialeah-Miami Lakes in the November 22 season-opener, but he’s more focused on his academic studies and extra curricular

activities to close out his high school career on top. Spicer is currently ranked in the top 10 percent of his class, serves as the SGA ESSAC Representative, secretary of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence, and he’s a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and National Society of High School Scholars. In addition, Spicer was selected to participate in the 2013-2014 Congressional Leadership Officers' Summit Experience (CLOSE) in Washington, D.C., where he attended workshops and met with members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Spicer was also invited to attend the Career and College

Expo on the campus of Florida International University, sponsored by the 100 Black Men of South Florida. He said a student must be a “great” organizer to balance so many school and community activities. “You have to establish a regular agenda and schedule and be well organized,” he said. “You must sacrifice sleep to stay up and do homework and study and plan your upcoming activities.” For basketball, the guard said he’s seeking to improve his scoring and rebounding averages from last year that landed him on The Miami-Herald All-Dade Team. Spicer averaged 15 points and 18 rebounds per game, guiding the

Patriots to a 20-6 record and a playoff berth before losing to thendefending state champions Hialeah Gardens. He said he likes his team’s chances this year with a load of experienced players, a big line-up and a talented depth chart. Spicer said three starters and six seniors are returning, and making a presence is 6’7 sophomore center/forward Josh Palino, towering over most his opponents. Junior forward Auris Anaro stands 6’6, giving American another big man to score points in the paint and play defense near the basket. “We have some experience on the team and a pretty big line-up,” Spicer said.

American clinches 16-7A district championship For the third consecutive year, American High’s football team clinched the 16-7A district championship with a win over Mater Academy, 35-0, and Miami Springs finished district runner-up and advances to the post season. Mater Academy could have created a three-way district tie playoff had it beat American but the Patriots’ offense was too explosive and the defense took apart the offense. Since head coach Corey Bell took over in 2011, American has won three straight district titles and three playoff berths. In the final regular season game last weekend, American lost to Carol City 28-21. Also in football news, Pace High school missed the playoffs for the third straight season with a loss to Gulliver Prep, 17-10, and Dade Christian’s chances of returning to the state championship game were dashed. Pace ended the regular season

at 6-4 with a 17-12 win over Belen last weekend. Hialeah-Miami Lakes prevented Goleman from winning its third game of the season, as the Trojans rallied in the fourth quarter to win 43-32.

Hialeah Gardens remained winless at 0-9 for the season following a loss to Krop, 35-6, and then endured its 30th consecutive loss last weekend to Goleman, 32-6. Gardens last victory was over Goleman in the final 2010 game.

Our Lady of Lakes students support bullying prevention Seventh-grade students at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School held special events as part of National Bullying Prevention Week held each October. With a plan to spread the message, the week began with students reading Joe Lawler’s “Bullying.com” about a 7th grade student who must prove to his school principal that he was not part of a cyberbullying incident. “This week, we have challenged ourselves to answer such questions as “What can we do to eliminate bullying in our world,” and “what ‘type’ of person and what age group do you think gets bullied,” said Nicole ArangurenGarcia who teaches 7th and 8th

grade literature and 7th grade religion. On October 30, the group held an anti-bullying dress down day with each student donating $1 to a charity that promotes peace and helps raise awareness. The 7th graders wore either purple or orange shirts (colors associated with the campaign). “As the Anti-Bully Pack Leader, I would like to express how proud I am of these students who are choosing peace rather than hatred,” Garcia said. “The topics discussed in class, while difficult, are fruitful and I see how passionate they are about bringing awareness and, most importantly, a solution to this ever-growing problem.”

Three Pace High students earn national recognition and scholarship opportunities

Bob Graham students receive FaceTime Tallahassee visit from Rep. Manny Diaz Jr.

By Katherine Palacio Special to The Miami Laker Three senior students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School received national recognition and the chance to earn scholarships to the colleges or universities of their choice. Nicholas Fernandez reached the “Semifinalist” level for the National Merit Scholar competition. Only one third of the students in this competition are qualified as semifinalists. Semifinalist status is awarded to the highest scoring students in each state. Finalists will be chosen in February based on continued academic excellence and SAT scores. Awards of $2,500 for the finalist can be used towards any accredited college or university. Nicholas Fernandez and Brielle Perez received recognition as “Scholars” in the National

NHRP, founded by College Board, has honored high-achieving Hispanic and Latino students since 1983, recognizing these students based on maintaining a high grade point average junior year, as well as excellent testing scores. Nina Pulley received “Commended Student” status in the National Merit Scholar competition. The commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition for 2014. Commended students have the opportunity to receive sponsorships from corporations to be applied towards their college education.

“I am proud to be a part of this innovative project” said Diaz. “Connecting our kids to government is a passion of mine.” Diaz plans to continue visiting schools like Bob Graham in his District via Facetime as committee weeks continue leading to the 2014 Legislative Session. Diaz represents the 103rd District, which includes southern Broward County and northeastern Miami-Dade County, stretching from Miramar to Hialeah Gardens, since 2012. He is the vice chair of the K-12 Subcommittee.

Mater Gardens holds UMater campaign to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month A Hispanic Heritage event and kickoff to the UMater campaign took place during after-school hours on October 24 in the parking lot of Mater Gardens Academy. Mater Gardens Academy usually commemorates Hispanic Heritage month with a day-time festival, however, some teachers requested that the event be held after school hours and using it to promote the UMater campaign. The UMater campaign is an annual fundraiser for scholarships, and supplies for students. Funds also go toward community service programs. "The idea was great not only for the celebration and the campaign but because we were able to open our doors to the parents who usually can not participate in our festival during the day," said school principal, Lourdes IslaMarrero. Each grade level in the K-8 center selected one Hispanic country and represented it at the festival. Booths were set up with delicious food, traditional artifacts, and student projects. Music,

Big hearts and big meals at Pace High’s ‘Tons of Love’ food drive By Maya Lora Special to The Miami Laker At Monsignor Edward Pace High School, one large act of kindness sweeps the campus each year around the Thanksgiving festivities and calls all students, teachers and faculty members to come out and participate. This major tradition is the Tons of Love food drive, which was started by Sister Carol Jean Willie over 25 years ago. During this time, people inside and outside the Pace community are invited to donate canned goods and any non-perishable goods to the drive that goes out to feed families for Thanksgiving. Last year, the drive fed 300 families. The theology department, and compassionate students who are a part of the Pace Mission Club, dedicate their time to make sure this event is always a success. Their passion for this event led to the creation of the Pace Pantry. The realization that families are hungry all year long, not just during Thanksgiving, drew some key members and teachers to form this pantry which runs year-long. It provides for local members of our community who are in need of food and toiletries for their families. "I will not be satisfied until

Echoes of the Heart Reflections on Life and Community Living By Dr. Jeffrey E. Frantz, Miami Lakes Congregational Church (Contact Dr. Frantz on the web at www.mlcchurch.com.) Be thankful! It's good for you. In this season of thanksgiving, there's good news for people who have a grateful spirit: It's good for you and it makes you a happier person. If we reflect on this, we might think it would be other things – like fear, for example, out of a deep respect for the Almighty; or obedience, out of a sense of duty and a willingness to do the right thing. Or, some might think it would be guilt, from an awareness of how much we fall short of God's glory. Yet, according to Barth, all of these pale in comparison to gratitude and the warming of the heart such gratitude brings. C.S. Lewis, the Irish-born novelist and poet, came to his Christian faith a little later than most (in his early thirties); but over time, he was quick to point out how thankful people seem the most happy and contented persons. If we think about this, there is a certain logic to it. Being thankful asks something of us. If gratitude (according to the sage Barth) is the most appropriate way we are to respond to God; and if, indeed, such a responding is built in to the nature of the divine/human relationships, it would follow that being thankful would be good for the human spirit and, therein, make us more happy and content. Of course, to be truly grateful

asks something of us. To begin with, it asks us how to slow down enough to reflect on our lives. It asks us to take time for self-reflection and assessment. It asks us to have perspective on our lives; in other words, to get outside ourselves enough to take measure of our daily choices in relation to the big picture priorities we want our lives to reflect. The bigger lesson here is the matter of knowing what is important in life and to have a vivd sense of our larger values and commitments. The big picture healing that gratitude brings. The life-story of Standard Oil business tycoon John D. Rockefeller is revealing in our discussion on the merits of a grateful heart. Born in 1839, Rockefeller was a man who knew how to set goals and follow through on them. In his late 20's, he became a millionaire; by the age of 50, he became a billionaire (an amazing feat in the late 19th century). Although a God-fearing Baptist his whole life, Rockefeller's primary focus had always been on creating and extending his personal wealth. However, three years later at the age of 53, Rockefeller became seriously ill. His entire body became racked with pain, he lost all his body hair, was in total agony, and was only able to digest milk and crackers. In assessing his condition, his highly-skilled doctors all predicted he would die within a year. As the months began to pass, agonizingly, and slowly, Rockefeller awoke one morning to the fresh memory of a recurring dream – how he would not be able to take any of his immense wealth with him into the next life. The man who wielded such tremendous financial power in the world

After Care

was suddenly humbled to a poignant awareness of how vulnerable and powerless he had become. So, he called in all of his attorneys, accountants, and managers and announced that he wanted to start channeling his assets to hospitals, medical research, and mission projects. Impressively, this new direction eventually led to the discovery of penicillin and to cures for strains of malaria, tuberculosis and diphtheria. As the years marched on, the list of new discoveries in medicine and successful mission projects grew and grew. However, the most amazing part of Rockefeller's story is that the moment he began to give back a portion of all he had earned, his body's chemistry was somehow so significantly altered that he got better. And he went on to live an increasingly fulfilling and satisfying life, dying a couple months shy of his 98th birthday. In reflecting on this, having a grateful spirit would, indeed, seem to be very good for us. It would probably reduce our stress, and therein, fortify our immune system. Therefore, with Thanksgiving only a few blinks away, let us be truly thankful for the life the spirit gives; and let us make daily, lifedecisions that express our gratitude!
