Miami Lakes Middle School adorns entrance with 50th anniversary mural By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Miami Lakes, a group of art students and their teacher at Miami Lakes Middle School created a mural reminiscent of the 1960s when the area

was an area of cow pastures and an immense dairy farm. The giant-sized painting adorns the school’s wall at 6425 Miami Lakeway North near the students pick-up, drop-off point, creating an image to reflect the many academics, magnet programs, sports

and elective courses the school has to offer to students. But in the mural, the cows are portraying the students and teachers. “It shows the community what we have to offer in courses filled

Battalion Chief. The state-of-the-art station is designed by the team of Alleguez Architecture, Inc. The principal architect on the project is Ana Alleguez and Orlando Milian will be the project manager. The team at GEC Associates, led by Luis Enrique, will oversee construction of the station. Harold Sanchez and Joe Gonzalez will be in charge of the daily operations for GEC Associates. Station #64 will also be the second Miami-Dade Fire Rescue station to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification. In order to meet LEED certification, the station needed to meet the following credits: • Sustainable sites – Minimize the impact on existing ecosystems and water resources. • Water efficiency – Reduce potable water consumption inside the station and out by using water more smartly. • Energy and Atmosphere – Use innovative strategies to reduce the energy performance in the facility. One example is using motion-censored lights that turn on when someone walks into a room. • Materials and Resources –

Use sustainable building materials and reduce waste. • Indoor Environmental Quality – Promote better indoor air quality and access to daylight and views. The new station will help to increase service and improve response time and efficiency. This will allow Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to continue to provide for the health, safety and welfare of Miami Lakes residents and the surrounding communities. For the past three years, Station #64 has been housed in temporary quarters at the intersection of N.W. 82 Avenue and Commerce Way in Miami Lakes Business Park West. When Miami-Dade first sought land to build a permanent fire station to achieve a better response time for emergencies on the west side of Miami Lakes, the late former Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso discovered some vacant land that belonged to the Florida Department of Transportation near Miami Lakes Drive and N.W. 77 Court. In working with Miami Lakes and county officials, the state agency turned over the land to Miami-Dade with the stipulation that the county could only erect a fire station on the site.

50th anniversary mural a work of art by MLM kids (Continued from Page 1) with a diverse culture and different colors to describe the atmosphere at the school,” said art teacher Irene Albalat. The mural mirrors the learning and recreation ambiance of the students’ everyday life that helped the school earn an A for five consecutive years. In the painting, the cows are learning language arts, reading books in the library, taking computer and math courses, playing musical instruments such as the saxophone and bass drum for the marching band, playing tennis and

basketball, cheerleading and a cow student painting a beautiful portrait of the Mona Lisa Cow. The mural also reflects Miami Lakes Middle School’s Law Studies Magnet Program, as the cows are portraying the judge, lawyers and the jury. Nora Bueno, the school’s assistant principal, said the administration wanted to come up with the perfect painting that best describes Miami Lakes and its rich history. Bueno has been a Miami Lakes resident for years and some of the school’s administrators grew up near the area and they love to rem-

inisce about the cow pastures and diary farm before The Graham Companies started developing Miami Lakes into a community in 1962. Miami Lakes became a city in 2000. “I remember the cows were running in the streets,” she said. “We had to explain to the students that Miami Lakes and the cow pastures have everything to do with

our school. And since the school is celebrating its 40th anniversary in the Spring, we wanted to do something extra special for both occasions.” Bueno said Albalat and her students started painting the mural last April and put the finishing touches on it in early October. They chose the location near the pick-up, drop-off point for par-

ents to see. Bueno said the painting gave the art students a more relaxed activity. “With the rigorous studies, it was a break for students and the way to show how important our elective courses are at the school,” she said.

HearUSA relocates hearing care facility to new offices at Park Centre Shopping Center HearUSA, a full-service hearing health care facility originally located at 15544 N.W. 77 Court in the Royal Oaks Plaza, has moved to Miami Lakes' Park Centre Shopping Center at 8028 N.W. 154 Street. HearUSA, originally known as HEARx, opened its first hearing care center in Florida in 1987. In 2002, with the acquisition of a national hearing care company, HearUSA was created. HearUSA is the only hearing care network accredited by the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC), the nation's top health care accrediting organization. Patients may schedule a free hearing evaluation, purchase products to improve their hearing health, and have their hearing aids fitted and programmed to fit their specific lifestyle needs. The center is equipped to offer patients a full hearing assessment that include a detailed case history, evaluation of their listening needs, and inspection of ear canals. Afterwards, a clear explanation of the test results, treatment options, and professional recommendations are provided. If hearing aids are an appropriate treatment, product selection, fittings, adjustments and ongoing support are included within the HearUSA Total Care Program. HearUSA is also able to arrange financing upon approval, work with insurance plans, offer 60-day trial periods, and product warranties. Money-back satisfaction guarantees are available as well. Promotional discounts and offers are made available from time to time. Digital hearing technology offers the most flexibility and more options to address user com-

fort and speech intelligibility. There are additional types of technology also available that, in most cases, can be incorporated into any size of hearing instrument. Micon technology offers an unprecedented natural listening experience through preserved natural acoustics, transparent amplification, improved directionality and audibility of high frequency sounds. Micon technology enhances wearers' focus on what they hear, not how they hear. Vivian Suarez, HearUSA's Board Certified Hearing Aid Specialist, has been with the company for over 19 years. She is looking forward to treating patients at the new location. "My goal is to help enhance my patient's quality of life by providing the most appropriate amplification, counseling, excellent customer care, and service," said Suarez." Helping people hear sounds of life gives me tremendous personal satisfaction. I've dedicated myself to making life better for the hearing impaired." HearUSA is open Monday through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments can be made online at www.hearusa.com or by calling 305-362-9098.

Town workshop focuses on budgeting and state lobbying During an October 30 workshop at Miami Lakes Town Hall, councilmembers discussed the second phase of implementing a mechanism to closely evaluate and monitor the town’s expenditures, and selecting a lobbyist for Tallahassee. Councilmembers discussed

Vice Mayor Manny Cid’s proposal for Phase Two of his Performance Based Budgeting (PBB), which is scheduled to take effect for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Phase One of the People’s Budget, as Cid calls it, was implemented for the current fiscal year and the final stage will start in

2015-2016. Cid said the goal is to show residents not only what services they are receiving for their money but how efficiently and effectively the town is providing them. The workshop consisted of a presentation by the town manager on the town’s internal expansion of

Main St. Players audition call for Next Fall The Main Street Players theatre group has scheduled an audition call for the 2010 Tony-nominated Next Fall, the first production at the Main Street Playhouse in 2014 opening on February 7 and running to March 2. The show will be directed by Artistic Director Robert Coppel. Audition dates are Sunday and Monday, November 10-11, from 7 to 10 p.m., at the Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street. Callbacks are set for Tuesday, November 12, from 7 to 10 p.m. Rehearsals start on November 18. Audition participants are asked

to prepare a 1-2 minute monologue and be prepared to read from the script. The character breakdown: Adam (40/45), a substitute teacher who dreamed of being a successful writer. A hypochondriac, an atheist...must have good comic timing. Luke (25/30), an aspiring actor, in a relationship in Adam. A devout Christian with a sensitive soul, but not out to his family. Butch (50’s), a successful business man who lives in Tallahassee. He is charming and charismatic, but definitely set in his ways and a

devout fundamentalist Christian. Arlene (late 40’s/early 50’s), Luke’s mom and Butch’s ex-wife. A wild child who still has some of that Southern wild in her. Holly (30’s), a candle shop owner and best friend to Adam. A real confidante, she is very openminded and likes to play the role of peacemaker. Brandon (25/30), a property manager who had a close relationship with Luke before Adam came along. Also a Christian, but questions his beliefs. For more information, call Coppel at 305-823-8548.

Town hosts Thanksgiving shoe drive Nov. 9 The Town of Miami Lakes has partnered with Loving Soles in an effort to collect shoes for the needy in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The local charity dedicated to providing shoes to Miami's homeless, founded by Tony Garcia, Dr. Daryl Gershbein, Dr. John and Ileana McGoohan's teenage children, will donate gently worn shoes to Camillus House and Catholic Charities. The shoe drive is scheduled for

10 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. Miami Lakes residents are invited to join town officials by bringing their gently worn shoes to Town Hall. Adult sizes will be donated to Camillus House and shoes for children will be donated to Catholic Charities. Monetary donations will also be accepted and will go toward the purchase of shoes. "The work Loving Soles does for the community tackles issues

of basic human dignity. We overlook what a decent pair of shoes can do to help someone get ahead," said Councilmember Tony Lama. "A decent pair of shoes for a child to wear to school or for an adult to wear to a job interview can truly make an impact." For information on donating shoes before November 9, contact Clarisell De Cardenas via email at decardenasc@miamilakes-fl.gov, or at 305-364-6100.

performance measures and their implementation into the 20142015 budget. “During Phase 2, we focused on tallying inputs and outputs,” Cid said. “It was a great start to the three-year implementation. Phase Two shall revolve around figuring out what exactly quality performance and government success actually means.” Cid initially offered the Performance Based Budgeting process in March, saying the Town Council isn’t provided with the tools to analyze efficiency or effectiveness of a program and expenditure. He said the town’s budget system was an incremental budget or line item system, the simplest form of budgeting with a focus on increasing or decreasing the preceding years level of spending. “I personally believe that this type of budgeting is not rational due to the lack of goals and objectives,” Cid said. “The PBB will develop performance measures and benchmarks, plus assist the council in monitoring and evaluating each expenditure. Most importantly, a PBB will be quantifiable. The performance indicators in the PBB will be relevant, understandable, timely, consistent, comparable and reliable.” In addition, lawmakers discussed Councilmember Tony Lama’s plan for selecting a legislative lobbyist to work on behalf of Miami Lakes in the State Capitol. Lama and councilmembers dialogued about a plan to manage the responsibilities.

They include: • How does Miami Lakes intend to collectively represent the interests of the town in Tallahassee? • What roles will councilmembers play? Is there some logical way to distribute the tasks amongst lawmakers based on their individual skill sets? • For resident engagement, former U.S. Senator Bob Graham suggested that Miami Lakes should consider resident lobbying due to its effectiveness, and he would assist in training. How can the town incorporate this idea? • Does the town find dollars to put out an RFP and hire an outside firm? • Does Miami Lakes consider a combination of approaches? Lama said he believes it is worth discussing whether Miami Lakes believes the selection of a lobbyist, regardless of dollar amount, should reside with the entire council. In August, lawmakers terminated the contract for lobbyist Becker-Poliakoff following the arrest of suspended Mayor Michael Pizzi on public corruption charges, who recommended the firm earlier this year. Attorney Richard Candia who worked with the Becker-Poliakoff law firm cooperated with FBI agents in a string that brought down Pizzi for allegedly pocketing money from a phony company that facilitates federal grant money. The town didn’t budget any funds for the current fiscal year.

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes

NOVEMBER 1, 2013

Manny Cid named vice chair of FLC Growth Committee Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Manny Cid attended his first

Police Review Committee recommends staying with Miami-Dade Police Dept. Following an extensive study and research process to determine if Miami Lakes is ready to start its own police department from scratch, the town’s Police Review Committee recommended the city should stay with Miami-Dade County for patrol and specialized services for the time being. The committee released its report at the October 8 regular Town Council meeting, where councilmembers unanimously supported the recommendation. The group included chairman Miguel Anchia, Councilmembers Ceasar Mestre, Tony Lama and Frank Mingo, former Councilmember Nelson Hernandez, Medley Mayor Robert Martell, and citizens Michael Alvarez, Phillip Bidart, Sergio Diez, Jorge Llanes, Rafael Nazario, John Rodriguez and Tony Sanchez. Earlier this year, the committee conducted an independent, unbiased and objective review of the town’s police contract with Miami Lakes, identifying the best scenario for the town. The committee members have a background in law enforcement, both as administrators and patrol officers, attorneys and police union representative. In addition, Town Manager Alex Rey, former Miami Lakes police commander Major Richard Amion and then-Lieutenant Gene Dieppa also gave their input during the study. The group compared the town’s police budget to other small cities that have their own police departments and discovered it would

cost Miami Lakes a lot of money to start its own law enforcement unit. Miami Lakes’ police budget for the previous year was estimated at $6.3 million and increased to $6.8 million for 2013-2014. In the police contract, the town owns 28 vehicles, two motorcycles, six bikes, 10 cameras, 12 desktop computers, six laser radars, two radars and six fixed radars. The agreement also includes the salaries and fringe benefits of the 49-member-detached unit. If Miami Lakes created its own police department, the town’s resources would be limited, which are needed to run a law enforcement unit 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. The committee recommended that town staff negotiate a new contract and increase the staffing numbers of patrol officers. Town has a low crime rate In a related development, the South Florida Business Journal, on September 27, published a study at Esri in which they ranked 79 ZIP codes in Miami-Dade County based on a total crime index, with total crime indexes ranging from 515 to 29. The average index across the county is 100, meaning that areas that index higher than 100 are more likely than average to have crime. Miami Lakes ZIP codes 33014, 33016 and 33018 ranked among the lowest in the county with total crime indexes of 68, 78, and 81 respectively.

After seven years of building loyal and engaged clientele, Zamorano, a skin care specialist, is opening her first store front in Miami Lakes. The spa offers a more natural, holistic approach to healthy skin. Selah Skin Studio focuses on helping their clients achieve maximum results by educating them on natural, holistic treatments and products available to those who do not wish to undergo more invasive treatments. Employing four professionals, the spa offers a variety of skin treatments including anti-aging facials, organic peels, diamond dermabrasion, acne recovery programs, anti-cellulite body treatments, full body detox wraps, custom tailored massages and make-up. After Zamorano’s 17 year career of office management positions, she decided on a new direction and entered the serenity of the treatment room and serving others. “I found myself coming across many stories of women from teens to adults, struggling to understand their skin’s behavior and how to address it," said Zamorano. "I realized most people were taking the wrong approach and using the wrong products. I also found that many people were only treating the skin topically and not embracing a more holistic approach to treatment. This is how holistic skin care became my passion. “Miami Lakes is a great destination for small businesses to excel,” said Vice Mayor Manny Cid at the grand opening event. “It is the best known town in Miami-

children in Miami Lakes Schools and are eager to begin seeing patients in the town they once called home and are looking to move back to. "It seemed to fit the mold of exactly the location we were looking for with a very small town feel," said Mai. "I want this to be the kind of practice that the kids can come to, and their parents and grandparents can also be treated." Mai, born in Vietnam and raised in Southern California, came to Florida to attend Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine. He then completed his residency at the Ohio Cleveland Clinic, and finished his medical degree at Larkin Community Hospital. The decision to pursue medicine had always been engrained in Mai, though he was cautious in choosing his field within medicine, eager to help patients while still holding true to the importance of family. After acceptance into dental school, and subsequent decision to forego a career in dentistry, Mai considered his passion, which was surgery, though he feared the hours that might separate him from his family.

DR. DAVID C. MAI and his wife Ana, owners of the new podiatry office Lakes Foot and Ankle Specialists in Cypress Village, are eager to create a family-friendly atmosphere at their practice, having first-hand experience with their own children (from left) Briana, Payten, Jessyn, Ava, and Adam. Mai found that in opening his own practice, he could control not only how much time he could devote to family, but also create an atmosphere that would make his patients feel like part of an extended family as well. "It can be hard to get in touch with your physician, whereas I readily give patients my cell phone number," said Mai. "I'm trying to make a change in the way medicine is done, with that perception of a stuffy office.” The office seeks to cater to families, while keeping true to Mai's values through the people which make day-to-day operations possible. Mai's office manager is his wife, Ana, and the rest of his staff is made up of relatives. The practice is fully equipped and will also offer a surgical suite for minor procedures to be done in-house. All other surgical procedures will be done by Mai at the Miami Lakes Surgery Center where he has operated since 2008. The office will be a one-stop-

shop for all podiatry care. Pharmaceutical needs will also be available at the neighboring Pharmacy Care Center. Unlike many podiatrist practices, Lakes Foot and Ankle Specialists cover the scope of bony issues of the foot, ankle and lower extremities up to the knees and soft tissue up to the hips. Mai specializes in trauma and reconstruction of the foot and ankle. The field of podiatry often overlaps with diabetic care, sports medicine, pediatric care, geriatric care, vascular and neurological medicine. Appointments for after November 4 can already be made by visiting the office at 7407 Miami Lakes Drive, by calling 305-827-0712, or by visiting www.maifoot.com. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays, Fridays, and alternating Saturdays.

as the thousands of cats and dogs in the care of the Animal Services Department remains uncertain. It’s been said that we most value that which we pay for through charitable contributions. It’s how we stand behind the causes we believe in. So in that spirit, Miami-Dade County is establishing a trust fund to allow the public to make voluntary contributions toward the county services that matter most to them. Through this trust, you, and other like-minded citizens, will be able to pool your resources and direct them exactly where you believe they are needed most. Over the next few weeks, property tax bills will be mailed to nearly one million households and businesses. A postage-paid enve-

lope will be enclosed, making it convenient for concerned citizens to make a voluntary monetary donation over and above their property tax payment. Whether you choose to provide additional support to animal services, the library system, the police or fire rescue, your donation will help ensure that the services you care about will continue to be provided. Keep in mind that these donations are tax deductible and will help meet pressing community needs. Be sure to consult your tax advisor with any specific questions regarding your deduction. Help keep your community moving forward and give a little something back.

The new 27,000 square-foot space is named for Jay I. Kislak and his family and is funded through $5.5 million gift from the Kislak Family Foundation which is based in Miami Lakes. Kislak, who graduated in 1970, and his granddaughter Elizabeth Kislak, who also graduated from the Wharton School in 2010. The $5.5 million Kislak gift to the Penn Libraries represents the largest cash contribution from an individual donor in the Libraries’ history. As part of its renovation plan, the Kislak Center has been expanded in scope to encompass the Annenberg Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Furness Memorial Shakespeare Library, the Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial Collection, and the Schenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies. The Kislak Center has been redesigned to allow several different groups to interact with objects of study simultaneously, increasing the use of primary resources in the University’s curriculum and

access to the Libraries’ resources for the larger scholarly community. Since its debut in April 2012, the new Kislak Center has quickly become prime real estate for both students and faculty. In a related development, “To the Ends of the Earth ... and Back: Selections from the Jay I. Kislak Polar Collection” opened at the Osher Map Library at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in Portland. The exhibition offers an extraordinary historical overview dating back five centuries of polar exploration and the process of globalization as depicted in maps, charts, books and artifacts and is curated by Arthur Dunkelman, director of the Jay I. Kislak Foundation. Dunkelman was the guest lecturer at the opening event on September 24. The exhibition will continue through February 27, 2014.

Opportunity to pay for what you value From Miami-Dade County Special to The Miami Laker The County’s new fiscal year began on October 1, but getting there wasn’t easy. On one hand, taxpayers were calling on their elected leaders to provide economic relief by keeping the property tax rates flat. On the other hand, doing so would mean placing services provided by police, fire rescue, the library system and the animal shelter in financial difficulty. Tough choices had to be made and in the end, while not every service emerged completely unscathed, essential services remain secure – at least for the time being. But the future of Miami-Dade County’s Library System, as well

Pace hosts Catholic Middle School boy’s basketball event Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s boys basketball program hosted its first Catholic Middle School Boys Basketball Tournament the weekend of October 25 and 26 on campus. The middle school teams taking part in this year’s event were St. Rose of Lima, Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Lakes, Blessed Trinity, St. John the Apostle, and St. Mary’s Cathedral. Each middle school program that participated in the event received t-shirts for their players and will be invited to return to Pace High School during the high school basketball season to watch a varsity practice, participate in a

free basketball clinic, and be in attendance for one of Pace’s varsity games this season. The Pace players and coaches ran the weekend’s event, which allowed Pace’s current players to interact and give these future high school players a chance to meet and learn from current high school student-athletes. Head coach Anthony Serro and his staff worked to ensure that each team participating received a first-class experience and aimed to give these middle school teams an exciting start to their basketball seasons. The Pace boys basketball season officially began practices on Monday, October 28. The Spartans will play in two pre-season games at Coral Gables High School on November 13 and 14 against Miami Christian and Westminster Christian. The regular season starts at St. Brendan on November 18, and then the Spartans home opener is a district game against Mater Lakes on November 20. The team returns with 10 varsity players from last year, led by Danny Duarte who averaged 24 points per game last year, including two games over 40 points, and CJ Fisher who averaged 22 points per game. Pace will look to build off of an offense that averaged just under 75 points per game last year, which was good for a top 10 ranking in the state in that category and was highlighted by a 107 effort in a victory against Cooper City last year.

PACE HIGH SCHOOL’S boys basketball team hosted a Catholic Middle School Boys Basketball Tournament on October 25 and 26 to build relationships with the younger athletes and instill athletic skills.

HML wins second game while American looks to district title Hialeah Miami Lakes got its second win of the season, defeating Westland Hialeah, 35-21, at Milander Park last week. The Trojans registered 167 yards on the ground and scored four rushing touchdowns. Westland Hialeah quarterback Romel Guerrier rushed for 200 yards on 17 carries and threw for two touchdowns in a losing effort. American High defeated Mourning High, 37-0, to keep its district championship hopes alive and will face Mater Academy, who lost to Miami Springs, 35-34 in overtime, on Friday.

HML volleyball team secures state tourney spot HML’s Lady Trojans Volleyball Team defeated North Miami Beach Senior High in the semifinals of the District Championship Tournament on Tuesday, October 22. With the win, the Lady Trojans locked in their spot for the FHSAA State Volleyball Tournament, which began the last week of October.

If Mater wins, it will face a three-way tie-breaker playoff between American, Miami Springs and Mater Academy. In the American-Mourning game, Patriots’ running back Arkeem Granger ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Ed Crouch threw for two touchdown passes and ran for a score. In the Miami Springs-Mater Academy district showdown, Golden Hawks running back Malik Thomas scored on 6-yard run and David Torres kicked the extra point in the game-winning series. Pace High lost to Jackson, 3832, in a close game that came down to wire. Knotted at 32-32 at the two-minute warning, Jackson’s quarterback Quinton Flowers floated a deep pass to receiver Jovon Durant for a 42-yard touchdown to give Jackson the lead. The Spartans had a chance to tie the game at Jackson’s 18-yard line with seconds left, but the ball was intercepted.

By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Bob Graham Education Center's PTSA has found innovative ways to raise funds and disburse them in the past, their last venture successfully equipping every classroom at the school with interactive smart boards. Now, PTSA members are embarking on their latest undertaking – to disburse grants to teachers who wish to contribute to students in the forms of clubs, activities, and events but find themselves limited by the school budget. The funds for the grants come from the fundraising spearheaded by the PTSA and from parents who contribute year-round at the various PTSA activities. "We wouldn't be able to do this without the committed parents who constantly contribute to the school," said PTSA president Yesse Ruano. A combined total of $30,000 will be spent in grants for the next three years, each year with a total allowance of $10,000. Teachers who apply and qualify will be awarded a $500 grant per project and are able to apply for more than one project during the school year. "My hope is that the whole pot for the year is spent by the end of 2013," said Ruano. "Before you

know it, there is FCAT and the end of the school year. I want to make sure that these grants are being used soon. Projects tend to take a lot of time. Some of the approved grants are year-long projects. The sooner the money is spent, the faster it goes into programs for the students." Teachers must submit applications for the grants to verify that the needs of students are being met. The official launch date for accepting grant proposals was set for Tuesday, October 1. Within minutes after midnight, BGEC teachers submitted proposals for their hopes and ideas for the classroom, and for some, outside the classroom. "I got emails at 12:01 a.m. and 1:50 a.m. on October 1st from teachers with proposals. This just shows there was a need," said Ruano. BGEC, a school known for over a decade’s long streak of "A" school grades, offers quality education but has seen the loss of students to various public and charter middle schools whose extra-curricular activities garner the attention of students and parents alike. As a K-8 center, extra-curricular activities are not always showcased due to lack of funding and competition from nearby schools. The PTSA is aware of the issue, and hopes that funding teachers' creative ideas will create a spark for clubs and events and instill school spirit in students. The first round of grants approved and distributed went to teachers Katrina Herrero, Jackeline Hernandez, Jenifer Batchelder, Maria Easterling, Jeffrey Tandlich, Alexandra Rosa, Lucy Garcia, DeeDee Conte, Elizabeth Aguerre, Candido Fernandez and Erik Batchelder. Herrero and Hernandez's proposal is aptly named "The COUP",

an acronym that stands for "College Offers Unlimited Possibilities." The purpose is to promote college awareness among older BGEC students. Batchelder and Easterling plan to create a club named "Blooming Buddies" in which students will investigate, analyze, and read literature on plants to establish a sustainable garden at His House Children's Home. They have also been approved for a second grant titled "Be Billingual: A Spanish Mobile Library" where students will have access to commonly read material provided by the BGEC library, but in Spanish to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension. Coach Tandlich was approved for his grant "Jumping Into The Future" which will use equipment that enhances the productivity of the BGEC jump rope team, the Bobcat Jumpers. Rosa, head of the Bobcat Cheerleaders team, has been approved for her grant requesting the ability to conduct practices and performances on cheer mats to prevent injury and further enhance the strength of the team. Garcia and Conte proposed "Go The Distance", a grant aimed to allow students to become highly motivated in problem-solving based research and applying their knowledge to real world problems. Aguerre plans to use her approved grant funding toward "Literature Circles: Real Literature Equals Real Readers", her efforts to create a book club meeting in which student readers are excited about discussing and debating books. BGEC's All-Star flag football team will be receiving new jerseys to wear to games. The grant was submitted by Erik Batchelder and Fernandez.

2015, received third place in the Cervantes Outstanding Student Essay Contest. Sanchez has worked at Pace for 23 years. He has worn many hats during his time there – track and cross country coach, class moderator, retreat and L.I.F.E. moderator, co-campus minister, announcer for sporting events, and English and theology teacher. He has enjoyed his years at Pace and was truly honored to receive this recognition. “I enjoy the people who I work with to the point that I feel like they are my extended family,” he shared. His daughter will be graduating from Pace next year, and he feels blessed to have her in an environment where they can participate in activities and mission work together. Gonzalez won third place for the Cervantes Outstanding Student

Essay Contest for 2013. The topic of the essay: As a young adult, how can I contribute to helping the people in a multiethnic society share common bonds? Gonzalez found this topic to be more than just an assignment; he was able to relate his own personal experiences in a multiethnic community in his essay. As part of Pace’s Spartan baseball team for his third year, he has been exposed to a variety of cultures. “It is natural to have a bond with teammates,” he said, “but having a bond with such a diverse group of players makes it even more unique. Not everyone can say they have this bond with others in school.” Both Jeffrey and Christopher were honored at a reception Wednesday, October 23, along with other winners, family, and Pace High School Principal, Ana Garcia.

from the United States and Canada to Mexico and California where they wait out the winter under conditions favor a return flight in the spring. The Monarch migration is a world natural wonder, yet it is threatened by habitat loss in North America. Monarch Waystations are places that provide resources such as host plant milkweeds, nec-

tar sources, larvae, and energy sources that are necessary for Monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration. Monarch butterfly populations are declining because milkweed and nectar sources are threatened due to the development and widespread use of herbicides in croplands, pastures, and roadsides.

Our Lady of Lakes students lead the Living Rosary Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School students participated in the school’s “Living Rosary” tradition on October 11. Held in the Rosary Garden, sixth grade students stand on stepping stones set in the shape of the rosary and lead the school in the reenactment of the mysteries. “October, the month of the Rosary, is an opportunity for us to pray together as a school,” said Rose Cabrera, OLL’s Religion coordinator. This tradition has existed at OLL for 15 years, and was held in the church prior to the construction of the Rosary Garden. Located in the center of the school SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School lead the annual Living Rosary event. Since 2004, this tradition has been held in the school’s butterfly rosary garden.

Some students contributed butterfly designs that were transferred to the five main “beads” – landscape stones. Situated at the center of the garden is a statue of Mary imported from Italy. It along with a mosaic cross were donated to the school. Angelica Perez honored for her success with art and photography Last year at this time, Angelica Perez was an American High School student who was involved in many things at school. But two of her main focuses were as a student in her photography class, and as an officer in the American High Art Club and National Honor Society. Those roles were important for her because she was awarded the National Art Honor Society Florida Student Award for her photography at the Florida Art Education Association annual conference in Daytona Beach on October 12. The award is one of the most prestigious student art awards offered in the state of Florida. Her photography teacher at American High, Tatiana Sainz, knew that Perez’s work was outstanding and helped her to enter several art competitions, resulting in her also winning one of the top awards in last year’s Dade County School’s art competition. Perez was mentored by Sainz and art teacher Ron Laffin, both of whom sponsored American High’s Art Club and National Art Honor Society. Perez is currently a student at Miami Dade College’s Honors College where she is studying photography and graphic design.

Echoes of the Heart Reflections on Life and Community Living By Dr. Jeffrey E. Frantz, Miami Lakes Congregational Church (Contact Dr. Frantz on the web at www.mlcchurch.com.) Staying grounded in life. While it is important to live in the present with an eye on the future, it is helpful to have a sense of our life story. An awareness of our life story helps us stay grounded in light of the larger picture of our lives. It helps us appreciate our past and those who have gone before us, upon whose shoulders we stand. The truth of our lives is that we all have a story to tell; we all have been nurtured, supported, and mentored by others along the way. Alex Haley, the author of Roots, has an unusual picture hanging on his office wall. It is a picture of a turtle sitting on top of a fence post. When Haley is asked, What's that about? What's up with the turtle? His answer is revealing. Every time I write something significant, he says, every time I read my words and think how wonderful they are, and begin to feel proud of myself, I look at the turtle on top of the fencepost and remember that the turtle didn't get there on his own. He had help. We have all had help in our lives, to whatever extent. Recalling this truth helps us stay humble and grounded. The teacher or coach who took us under their wing, spending extra time with us, offering us that extra word of encouragement. The neighbor who always had a friendly word for us; the family member or friend who helped us financial-

ly when we were working our way through difficult times. We all have a story to tell. In my own life story, my mother died in 2007, my father in 2008 – each of them having lived long, good lives. They never had an opportunity to go to college; yet, for me and my three siblings, education was always a top priority in our home. As I think about my two daughters (each in their mid-thirties), both of whom are very successful university professors with Ph.D.'s in political science – one in England and one in the Boston area, it is good for me to remember the employment track of my parents. In her late seventies (1996), my mother wrote down a list of the different jobs she and my father had through the years. With no vivid memories of much deprivation as a child, I had not remembered how much they had struggled to make ends meet. My father worked on a farm as a hired hand, tried a number of start-up businesses that never panned out, drove a truck for a few years, and knocked around as a sales person for two or three years until finally landing a productive job selling storm windows and doors to housing contractors, after which we were eventually able to own our own home. My mother, valedictorian of her high school class, made aprons which my brother and I sold door to door back in Aurora, Illinois. A short time later, she worked part

time for the local newspaper in the classified and accounting departments. Following this she spent sixteen years working as a kindergarten assistant for the local school district. In retirement in her late fifties, she eventually became the artist/painter she had always wanted to become. Remembering and looking forward. Re-reading my mother's account of my parent's work history is a humbling experience. It is like Alex Haley looking at the picture of the turtle sitting on top of the fencepost in his office. We all have our personal life stories. My daughters, along with my ten nieces and nephews, have all made us proud. They have worked hard, achieved much already, and are well on their way to a life of continued fulfillment and well-being. The turtle on that fencepost invites us all to look backward and forward in our lives with a sense of gratitude and humility. While it is a humble reminder of how far our family has evolved over the years, it also reminds us that we all have a life-context and that we are inherently social creatures, each of us the recipient of the help, encouragement and support of countless family members and friends along the way. With the season of Thanks-giving on the horizon, it is good for our spirit to take time to reflect, remember, and give thanks for the many blessings that have come our way in life.

Congratulations to Shelley McKenzie and Yraima Morales of RE/MAX Unique Realty for achieving *100% commission status. They were “capped” at our last meeting. Once again, congratulations for their success in this Real Estate Market.

Our commission structure is a little bit different than most real estate companies. We have something called an agent commission “cap”. Once an agent meets their “cap”, they begin to earn *100% commission.
