An Optimist legend in Miami Lakes, Jack McCall marks 42 years of coaching baseball By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Longtime Miami Lakes Optimist Club member Jack McCall has coached so many young baseball players including his sons and four grandsons during his 42 years with the organization that he lost count. But the humorous anecdotes from his former players help jog his memory, as the coach of their kids and grandchildren, who told him he was a big inspiration in their lives. “They would come up to me and say, ‘Mr. McCall, do you remember me? You coached me in T-ball and Mustang leagues with the Athletics. You were a great coach and mentor’.” McCall created a legacy at the Miami Lakes Optimist Club,

marked by three generations of coaching and participation, and he served as the organization’s president and South Florida District Optimist International’s lieutenant governor and two-term governor. In 2012, he was enshrined in the South Florida District Optimist International Hall of Fame, signifying four decades of devotion to helping youth both on and off the field. Joining the exclusive club epitomized his optimist career, but he’s not planning to slow down anytime soon, given the opportunity to coach his youngest grandson as the newest member of the Green Machine. McCall adopted the moniker years ago as the Little League version of the 1970s Cincinnati Reds’

Jack McCall is passionate about teaching baseball (Continued from Page 1) Big Red Machine, and because of his Irish heritage. “Since 1973, I always loved to volunteer and coach kids because it’s a passion of mine,” McCall said “I will be volunteering and coaching until the end.” McCall’s team recently played with the luck of the Irish on their side. During a tournament game in Palm Springs North, his team executed the impossible – a triple play by a five-year-old and sixyear-old. To his recollection, it was the second time in T-Ball play the rare act of making three outs during one continuous play occurred.

“The kids executed it flawlessly,’ he said. “The kids didn’t realize what they had accomplished.” For eight years, McCall simultaneously coached two Athletic teams in the T-Ball and Mustang leagues. He said attorney John Perez offered to help coach, and the lawyer’s father helped jog his memory about coaching his son years ago. “His father approached us and said John played with the Green Machine, and now I am coaching John’s son,” McCall said. “It’s very rewarding to see former players to coach and volunteer with their kids and grandchildren.”

The Main Street Players Catholic Hospice hosts ‘Summer Getaway’ award scholarships to performing art students The Main Street Players awarded three scholarships on Sunday, May 18, to local high school seniors involved in the performing arts. The Main Street Players Board of Directors reviewed their applications and selected the top three students recommended by their teachers who best demonstrated and exemplified the true ideals of the performing arts. To be eligible, the students had to plan to continue their performing arts education in college this fall as a major or minor. The winners were selected based upon their high school performance, their GPA, community service, and a personalized essay explaining their plans to pursue performing arts as part of their curriculum and what performing arts meant to them. The recipients, honored at the Main Street Playhouse by Main

Street Players’ president, Clara Lyzniak, were Brandon Tielves from Barbara Goleman Senior High School, Nataly Morillo of Mater Academy, and Kai Green from Miami Lakes Educational Center. The award was announced on May 9 at the end of the year awards luncheon at Jungle Island, and was presented by School Board members and the Superintendent. Although a surprise, many

Schwinghammer has been a consistent presence at Miami Lakes K-8 Center for 13 years and her volunteer history is expansive. Her history includes PTSA president and vice president of Organization, foundering member of the Ollie Owl Booster Club and three year treasurer, Scholastic Book Fair chair for three years, 5th-grade Committee treasurer, foundering member of the MLE K-8 Committee that spearheaded the school’s expansion, member of the Construction Committee when the middle school was built, Cheerleading “Team Mom” for three years, 8th-grade Committee treasurer, Year Book producer, and most importantly, a persistent Home Room Mom. Town of Miami Lakes named Sergeant Eduardo Ruesga as the 2014 Officer of the Year, and Captain Nicky Latimore as the 2014 Firefighter of the Year during the Public Safety Committee’s Appreciation Day on May 17 at Roberto Alonso Community Center. The committee organized a BBQ and award presentation to recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of public safety officials that serve Miami Lakes. “It was truly an honor to share this special occasion with our public safety professionals that place their lives at risk every day to serve our residents and help make the Town of Miami Lakes a safe place to live, work and play,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “We commend their work and are grateful for their service to the town.” Ruesga was recognized for his exemplary leadership skills, outstanding dedication to duty, and initiative which has helped make the Town of Miami Lakes a safer neighborhood. Ruesga is the Commander of the General Investigative Unit (GIU) for the Miami Lakes Police Section and generally handles the duties normally done by 5 to 6 sergeants in a regular District, including auto theft, burglary, persons crimes, crime analysis, administration and street crimes. He also supervises a team of five detectives and helps coordinate the “Best Practices” program within Police Services. Enhancement Patrol and Narcotics Grant Detail. “Whether it is a simple or major situation, he handles them in a proficient and professional manner and responds to scenes regardless of the time, when necessary,” said Police Major Gene Dieppa, who presented the award. “Sergeant Ruesga’s attitude towards his job, police work, and the public is outstanding. In April 1995, she was promoted to Police Office, and later that same year, she reached her ultimate goal of becoming a Firefighter for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. In addition to 19 years of firefighting, Latimore has also been employed as a part-time Police Officer for Virginia Gardens for the last 15 years. The theme that runs throughout Latimore’s evaluations is that of a dedicated, dependable, meticulous, compassionate, and selfdirected Fire Captain. Additionally, her expertise, professionalism, and commitment to the highest standards have been recognized formally as evidenced by numerous commendations and letters of recognition. “It has been a privilege to have been an instructor for Captain Latimore during her career and I am very proud of her and all that she has accomplished,” said Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez. “Captain Latimore being named Firefighter of the Year is a well-deserved honor.”

Council gets update on state funding, FDOT plans State Representative Manny Diaz said Miami Lakes would receive a check in the amount of $1.3 million for stormwater drainage improvements and stabilizing the town’s canal by July, money he and fellow State Representative Jose Oliva and Senator Rene Garcia helped secure during the Florida Legislature Session in Tallahassee. At the May 13 regular Town Council meeting, Diaz told councilmembers that after Governor Rick Scott signs the new budget, he will present Miami Lakes with the check hopefully in July. He said the $300,000 for stormwater drainage upgrades was the second phase of funding from last year for Miami Lakes to complete part two of its projects, and the $1 million is earmarked for the canal bank stabilization project near Royal Oaks to help the town resolve a long-standing problem. In addition, Diaz announced the construction of a sound wall to protect residents in the westside neighborhoods from the traffic noise on I-75 should start sometime this year, and another sound wall should go up adjacent to the Madden’s Hammock property on N.W. 154 Street and 87 Avenue next year. Diaz said the Florida Department of Transportation may conduct a study to determine if a sound wall is needed on the eastern portion of the town near the Palmetto Expressway. In other town business: • Lawmakers gave their initial approval for an ordinance, which

requires Miami Lakes to notify homeowners and condominium associations of proposed building and zoning projects within one mile of their boundaries. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez recommended the measure at the April 8 regular Town Council meeting. • Lawmakers approved a proposed site plan on a conditional use for a nonpublic child care facility called Little College Corporation submitted by Marisol Torres and JMC Properties at Royal Oaks Corporation. Town staff recommended approval of the site plan at 15225 N.W. 77 Avenue, which includes a maximum enrollment of 194 children, with the facility operating from Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. • Councilmembers approved a resolution codesignating Miami Lakeway North between N.W. 67 Avenue and Miami Lakeway Drive as Father James P. Murphy Way. The location is near Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and School, where Murphy served a pastor from 1996 to 2011, and contributed to the Miami Lakes community for many years. He died earlier this year from cancer. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Tony Lama’s recommendation that council members would be banned from being included in video services to be posted on the town’s website that highlight Miami Lakes, the committees, volunteers, residents and future plans.

Lama made the suggestion to prevent political abuse after lawmakers in April approved to use Dave Graveline, president of the Miami Lakes Broadcast Center, for the services for only three months. Lama voted against Mayor Wayne Slaton’s motion because Graveline shot videos of his campaign in 2012 and 2013 and some residents may view it as a political favor to award the contract to someone who contributed to his campaign. • Lawmakers approved a working contract in the amount of $149,101 with JVA Engineering Contractors for drainage improvements for N.W. 83 Place. The new drainage system will address flooding after heavy rainfall events due to limited existing drainage. The existing roadway pavement between N.W. 158 Terrace and N.W. 162 Street will also be milled and resurfaced. • Council members approved a working contract in the amount of $141,406 to Williams Paving Company to complete the second phase of the greenway improvements at N.W. 170 Street between N.W. 82 Avenue and N.W. 77 Court. • Councilmembers approved Council member Ceaser Mestre’s proposal to increase the height of walls to nine feet that are adjacent to a street right-of-way by amending the town’s land development code through an ordinance. According to Mestre, many residents brought it to his attention that their desire for the maximum

height of walls to be increased in efforts to enhance public safety. The town’s existing code allows walls to be no more than six feet. • The Council authorized the town manager to apply to The Miami Foundation’s Our Miami Public Space Challenge for grant funds for an event designed to spur economic development for local businesses and encourage wellness in Town: CycloMiamiLakes. The Miami Foundation created the Our Miami Public Space Challenge to discover the best ideas for improving, creating, and activating local public spaces. The Town of Miami Lakes’ submission, CycloMiamiLakes, has been selected as a Finalist. The project would adopt the practice of “cyclovia,” a Spanish

term for "cycleway," through the closing of certain streets to automobiles for cyclists and pedestrians, modeled after Bogotá, Colombia’s closures of main streets to cars as a response to congestion and pollution. Runners, skaters, and bicyclists take back the streets, with stages set up in city parks, fitness instructors, yoga teachers and musicians leading people through various performances, all free to the public. Shop owners and restaurants are encouraged to open their doors to people along the route. The event will be proposed to occur twice during the inaugural year. CycloMiamiLakes will request funding from The Miami Foundation not to exceed $20,000.

Jose Marti MAST Academy celebrates Earth Day By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff On Saturday, April 26, Jose Marti MAST Academy celebrated Earth Day with students, parents and teachers. Trees were planted, gardens were mulched and trash was collected. The school's Green Club worked together with the freshmen research classes and put together an interactive activity that encourages students to use technology to help identify native plants in the school's native arboretum. The administration is proud to offer their students enhanced learning activities outside of the classroom and into the real world of botanical research.

All of the 28 species planted in the native arboretum were labelled with numbers. Each student group was given an answer sheet where students wrote the number of the plant that they felt most matched the common and scientific name on the sheet. Each group was also given QR codes to use with their smart phones to view descriptions and photos of the different plants. Andrew Kearns, the lead teacher for the Earth Day assignments said, “At a school that focuses on math and science, I think it is imperative that students go beyond the classroom to experience the real world of research, science, and statistics. Too many times students feel that scientific

research is confined to an indoor laboratory setting when, in fact, such research opportunities are everywhere. Our José Martí MAST Native Arboretum is a living laboratory available to our students.” The initial installation of plants at the Native Arboretum was in May, 2012, through a small grant from the National Wildlife Federation. In addition to the plants obtained through the grant, the school has planted native species of trees and shrubs started from seedlings. “The land on which the arboretum is planted was previously occupied by portable school district buildings, so we have

‘reclaimed’ the land for nature,” said Kearns. As the flora planted has matured, the arboretum has attracted many native species of butterflies including zebra longings, gulf fritillaries, giant swallowtails, and orange-barred sulphur butterflies. Birds that frequent the arboretum are white ibis, mockingbirds, mourning doves, grackles, loggerhead shrikes, and observed on one occasion, an American kestrel. For more information on José Martí MAST Academy, contact the school at 305-557-5931 or visit the school website www.mast3.com.

Gregoria Barbete, 104 years old, honored by Council for dedicated community service At its May 13 regular meeting, the Miami Lakes Town Council honored longtime resident Gregoria Barbete, who is 104 years-old, for her many years of contributions to the town in social events and community services. Barbete was born in the small town of San Antonio de Las Vegas, in Havana County, Cuba, in April 1910. She was married for 56 years until her husbands’ death. In 1930, she was elected the beauty queen of her native town and to be the representative on behalf of her hometown and all towns south of the Capital during all annual festivities. In 1972, Barbete and her husband were exiled to the United States, where she has been a citizen since 1996, registered to vote and has been a consistent voter.

She previously lived in Patterson, New Jersey; Orlando, Florida; and moved to Miami Lakes in 2001. She was the pillar of the family when everybody was sad and lost in sorrow, her positive outlook always was courageous. Her perseverance and creativity always improvised the perfect solution to many desperate situations. “My family has gone through our share of losses, with the death of all of my mother’s contemporaries, the marriage and birth of the new generations but we have been blessed for being able to share the good, the bad and the Cuban exiles with my mother,” said Elsie Barbete, Gregoria Barrete’s daughter.

Did You Know? A Miami Laker reader asked the question: Is there a “pooperscooper” ordinance in Miami Lakes, like the one in Miami Beach, requiring owners, when walking their dogs in public, to clean up after them? Lourdes Sosa, in the Town of Miami Lakes Code Enforcement Department, says there is currently NOT a separate “pooper-scooper” municipal ordinance in Miami Lakes, but agrees that it would be a great idea. However, there is a Countywide Ordinance, Chapter 5, Section 20(c), which states, in part: If a dog defecates on the grassy swale of a public right-of-way, or

other such public property, or on private property without the express or implied consent of the property owner, the responsible party shall remove the defecation and deposit it in an appropriate trash receptacle, sanitary disposal unit, or other sealed container. Enforcement of this Ordinance is by the County’s Animal Control Department, and violations should be reported to 3-1-1. An Animal Control officer will go to the owner’s house to explain the Ordinance. The Miami Lakes Community and Leisure Services Department (formerly the Parks Department), in an effort to keep the town’s parks clean and health, has

installed many “Dogi Pot” stations which dispense free plastic bags for owners to pick up after their dogs. The station also has a container in which to place the bags. If residents find the container in their park is full, or the bag supply is empty, call the town at 305-3646100 to report it. “Did You Know?” is provided as a public service by The Miami Laker. If you have a question or concern about conditions in Miami Lakes and would like to see it featured in “Did You Know?,” email MiamiLaker1@aol.com, or call the main office: 305-8174078, or the Editor: 305-8174007.

The Main Street Players are hosting two upcoming performances, a magic act and a fulllength drama, in late June at the Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street. On Saturday, June 28, at 7 p.m., the Players are bringing back world-renowned Cuban-American magician, Dylan Ace, for one show only. Tickets are $12 general admission and are available at the door at 6:30 p.m., or online at www.mainstreetplayers.com. Dylan has appeared on every major American and Latin television network, with regular appearances on Latin television. Ace has served as an opening act for the

biggest stars in show business – Paul Simon, Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, Julio Iglesias and Lenny Kravitz to name a few. On Monday, June 30, at 8 p.m., the Players will host the South Florida Theater League’s Summer Theater Fest Reading Series when they present The Pot by Glenn Hutchinson. This full-length drama, directed by Florida International University professor, Ivan Lopez, is about a college student, Laura, who brings her boyfriend, Rick, home for Thanksgiving. Despite living in the United States since he was 4 years old, Rick is still undocumented. The play presents what happens when Rick meets Laura’s family, including her father, a recently elected state legislator. Narrated by Laura’s adopted biracial brother,

Nathan, The Pot explores questions of race, identity, nationality, and the borders and boundaries people place between one other. There is no charge for tickets for this event though donations will be accepted by the Main Street Players to help defray local expenses. The Main Street Playhouse of Miami Lakes is proud to display one of the South Florida Theater League’s umbrellas representing the summer reading series theme: “Come Under Our Umbrella.” It has been uniquely personalized to give it a Main Street Players flavor, showcasing 40 years of the history of the community theatre in South Florida. American High, Mater Academy baseball teams are state champions By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Last year, American High baseball players walked off the field dejected after losing a heartbreaking state semifinal game. This year, they walked off the same field but with a different out-

come – State Champions! juggernaut The Patriots’ avenged last season’s state tournament loss by beating Tarpon Springs East Lake, 5-2, to claim the Class 7A Florida Championship, the school’s firstever state title in baseball. American ace pitcher Alex Blanco (6-0) led his team to the championship victory, pitching five scoreless innings, striking out six batters before giving up a couple of runs in the sixth inning. Closer Andy Figueroa got the final out, a pop up that was caught by Eric Gonzalez to seal the win. The Patriots (26-5) scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Mater Academy also had a championship celebration of its own.

The Lions (22-8) claimed the Class 6A state title by beating Winter Haven, 1-0, behind a dominating pitching performance by Kevin Fuentes, who tossed a complete-game with a one-hitter. American and Mater Academy joined South Dade and Brito as the first Miami-Dade Public Schools to win state titles in the same season and the first championships for Miami-Dade County since Hialeah won two consecutive titles in 2002. South Dade defeated Valrico Bloomingdale, 3-1, to win the Class 8A state title, while Brito defeated Naples Seacrest Country Day, 14-2, to claim the Class 2A championship, giving MiamiDade a clean sweep in the state tournament.

Our Lady of the Lakes coaches and athletic director receive All-Catholic Conference honors On May 19, coach German Garcia, Athletic Director at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School, received the All Catholic Conference (ACC) Outstanding Leadership Award for Athletic Director. To qualify for this award, an athletic director must first be nominated by other coaches, athletic directors, and peers from one or more of the 27 Catholic schools in Miami-Dade County. The Conference then selects the award recipient from a group of 10 nominees. Garcia was selected for outstanding leadership and sportsmanship. He expressed his grati-

tude to the parents, fellow teachers and OLL coaches who have helped him throughout the year. “I share this award with all of you as we are truly a team and, despite not always agreeing with each other, we must keep working together because we have the same goal – to teach our students life lessons in and out of the classroom. With Christ, anything is possible on a daily basis.” OLL coaches Ulises Hernandez and Danny Perez received ACC Outstanding Leadership Awards for their work leading the basketball and baseball teams, respectively.

Optimist softball program provides talented players to South Florida high schools By Alex Castroman Special to The Miami Laker In what’s become an all too familiar scene, Miami Lakes Optimist Club’s Softball program has become a feeder to MiamiDade and Broward High schools. This year, the program has more girls selected to The Miami Herald All-Dade Teams than last season, proving the great job the coaches have done throughout the years in preparing the girls for high school ball, making the coaches’ job a little easier. The list of girls making the AllDade Teams was led by Faith Vazquez, who came in second in Miami-Dade County with six homeruns and earning her first Miami-Dade Honors. Samantha Dominguez also made the first team, and Mater Lakes Alexis Castroman, who was tied for fourth place for pitchers with a 2.24 era and 77 strike outs, made the second team as well as Kayleen Romero from American. Romero was nominated for Athlete of the Year.

The list continues with American player Victoria Morales, who has over 17 wins and led her team to a district title, and other players included Emily Santos, Monica Marquez, and Mater Lakes Melanie Arauz, Alyssa Rodriguez and Addy Garcia. We are extremely proud of all of these girls for their hard work and dedication, some playing softball since the age of seen. Their sacrifices have gotten them where they are today. The results for the 2014 Miami Lakes Optimist Club baseball and softball season: The Yankees won the Pinto Division and the Red Sox finished second; the Marlins claimed the Mustang Division and the Angels finished in second place; the Yankees finished first in the Bronco Division and the Orioles came in second; and the Red Sox won the Pony Division. For softball, the Heat won the championship and the Panthers were the runner-up.

With a weighted GPA of 6.167 Benaiges earned from multiple dual enrollment and advanced placement courses, it's not hard to see why the senior was accepted into Georgia Institute of Technology. “Last year I began to realize that I might end up graduating at the top of my class, but as an underclassman, I had no idea that it could happen. I remember when my brothers attended here and visiting for their ceremonies when they had 6.0 GPA's and I was just thinking that was impossible, and now my GPA is similar,” he said. brother works in Washington D.C. for the state, and his father works for Miami International Airport. The motivating force behind this family, however, can easily be attributed to Benaiges’ mother, Mary. She has long been a part of her children's academic career, acting as a proud supporter and volunteering her time and efforts toward the academic betterment of not only her own family, but also for their peers. Mary's position as PTSA president at the various schools her children have attended has yielded change and improvement. Her push for a new auditorium for Miami Lakes Middle School at a time when the county's school budget was inflexible led to her to find different avenues for funding. With the help of the principal, and Mayor Wayne Slaton back in the early 2000's, Mary managed to cover the hefty costs through community fundraisers completely resoring the auditorium where many of the Town of Miami Lakes meetings were held before the town hall was completed. For her efforts in making Goleman a top school for its students, Mary was awarded alongside her son and the other Silver Knight nominees at the annual Scholars Awards ceremony. She received the Parent Involvement Award, given to the parent who has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Mary has been involved with the school for 12 years. “My parents are proud of me and my brothers. They always joke

They're really modest,” said Benaiges shyly, a trait he appears to have inherited as well. Some of Benaiges’ accolades include receiving the Outstanding Student Award in subjects like AP World History, Language Arts and AP Calculus, he is a National

Hispanic Scholar, a Scholar Athlete, and an AP Scholar with Distinction. With all the activities on his plate, when asked if he has the time to fit anything else into his day Benaiges said with a laugh, “If I do have time left for anything else, it's just time away from sleep.”

Barbara Goleman's seniors were nominated in different categories for the The Miami Herald’s Silver Knight Award program. The nominees were a handful among dozens throughout the county. The winners were awarded in late May. Goleman's Silver Knight nominees included: Bryan Benaiges has a weighted GPA of 6.167. Some of his accolades include receiving the Outstanding Student Award in subjects like AP World History, Language Arts and AP Calculus. Benaiges is a National Hispanic Scholar, a Scholar Athlete, and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He has been accepted to Georgia Institute of Technology and plans to attend in the fall. He decided to participate in the Silver Knight program for the chance to receive the prestigious award while competing with the brightest, young minds of South Florida. Benaiges’ major service project included tutoring low-performing math students for the End-Of-Course (EOC) examinations. Ryan Franquiz has a 5. 3 GPA, is in the top five percent of his class, and is the vice president for the Class of 2014. Ryan is the recipient of the Posse Foundation scholarship and will attend Hamilton College on a “full ride” scholarship. Franquiz decided to

apply for the Silver Knights program because he wanted to show the community the service he undertook during his high school career, specifically his volunteer hours in a nonprofit summer camp. Julian Colina has taken honors and advanced placement courses all throughout his high school career in order to achieve his 4.9 GPA. He has completed over two hundred community service hours through various school clubs and organizations. As the school’s Key Club president, Colina was instrumental in organizing several national service campaigns, including the fundraising drive for the March of Dimes. Cristian Jimenez's strong passion for music and curiosity for sound has earned him the position of Drum Major for the school’s marching band for the past four years. He was the first freshman to pass AP Music Theory and promoted to wind ensemble, the highest performance level. Jimenez's

major service project included creating a transitional band camp where students from the feeder pattern schools felt welcome and willing to participate in the band. For Celeste Mohan, English has always been one of her strongest subjects and her passion. She is constantly reading and improving her writing skills. As president of the Book Club and Best English Student nominee, Mohan has a genuine love for reading and English. Jordan Thompson was nominated for the speech category and it fits his personality. Thompson enjoys speaking to audiences and capturing people’s attention. Thompson ran for Silver Knights because he knew it would be a great opportunity to showcase his community service. As the school’s Youth Empowerment Summit facilitator, Thompson held several workshops to raise awareness about teen and cyber bullying.

RE/MAX is #1 in National Brokerage Survey

2550 West 84th Street • Hialeah, FL, 33016

Once again, real estate agents affiliated with RE/MAX rank among the most productive in the country. Data contained in a national survey shows that, among the national franchise brands, RE/MAX had the highest per-agent home sales in 2013. The REAL Trends 500 survey reports that sales associates at RE/MAX brokerages averaged 17.8 transactions last year. That figure was more than twice as high as the 7.9 average of all competing agents in the survey. Ready to let a RE/MAX agent guide you? Call us for a complimentary market analysis.
