Diaz, Garcia, Rodriguez seek help for blasting claims By David Snelling The Miami Laker staff Northwest Miami-Dade residents who are reeling from the rock mining industry’s blasting that allegedly caused damages to their properties have turned to two state lawmakers in hopes of finding some solutions before the problem deteriorates and they have to spend more money for repairs. During the 2015 Legislative Session in Tallahassee, State Representative Manny Diaz Jr. and State Senator Rene Garcia, who represent the Town of Miami Lakes and Palm Springs North (PSN), took the initial step by sponsoring legislation that added language to House Bill 359 (Miami-Dade Lake Belt Plan), which allows the state’s Fire Marshall, who controls the frequency of blasting, to initiate a study on the level of the explosions, and how to investigate and pay legitimate claims to property owners. The Lake Belt Plan encompasses the extensive rock mining area in the western fringes of the county; protecting the Everglades and county’s safe drinking water are primary objectives of the plan. Diaz and Garcia are also exploring other resolutions to the homeowners’ problems, who

claimed the blasting has some seismic consequences, such as creating cracks inside their homes, swimming pools, driveways and garages. The two state lawmakers called several town hall meetings in Miami Lakes and PSN to listen and gauge the extent of the damages to their properties before deciding the next steps to take to help resolve the issue. Last week in Miami Lakes, Diaz, Garcia and Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez met with Ronnie VanLandingham, vice president of operations for White Rock Quarries, and they all subsequently participated in a conference call with officials from the state’s Fire Marshall office over the impact of blasting on residents’ homes. The three lawmakers decided to lead the charge on working on some solutions with all the stakeholders on behalf of their constituents. “The legislative process works best when we all work together,” said Garcia. “This was a great first step and I thank Councilmember Rodriguez and Representative Diaz for coming to the table with ideas.” Diaz said he has felt the rock mining blasting and vibrations in his own home. “Our concerns with the rock mining have been the blasting impact, water safety and accountability,” Diaz said “Our legislation and the continued effort of us working together will make sure we address those concerns.”

Rodriguez echoed similar sentiments. “Miami Lakes and I have felt the vibrations from blasting,” said Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter, who reached out to Diaz and Garcia for help. “This legislation and study is a good first step and I will continue to work with our state friends to do what’s best for the residents of Miami Lakes.” PSN residents, who were affected by the explosions as well, said more damages to their homes are forthcoming because they believe the rock mining industry’s blasting intensity has increased. According to the North Star, a monthly newsletter published by the Palm Springs North Civic Association, the organization reached out to White Rock Quarries representatives and learned that the reason for the increased intensity is that the blasting was conducted in a new location, which is two miles from the majority of the surrounding homes. Representatives from White Rock Quarries agreed to attend the PSN group’s meeting on April 13 to listen to the residents’ concerns, but they canceled their attendance because the one person who could address the blasting issue couldn’t make it. About 100 residents attended the meeting, where representatives from the Limestone Associations, Fire Marshall office, County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., Diaz and Garcia’s office were on hand. Garcia and Diaz were in

The shop was opened by Peggy Rosenson who was a well known presence in the community. She ran the shop with the help of her daughter Randi Rosenson, and toward the latter part of Peggy’s life, with the help of family friend Lori Wetzel who would become the new owner in 1995 after Peggy’s passing. The shop’s storied history is one filled with heartache and joy as Randi Rosenson and Wetzel experienced the highs and lows of life within the walls of Duke and Duchess. On Wetzel’s first day at the shop, at Rosenson’s urging she greeted the first customer, Bill, the man who would later become Wetzel’s husband. The two were high school sweethearts 12 years prior and reconnected on that fateful day.

Wetzel and Rosenson also experienced the loss of their mothers, and later the passing of Bill Wetzel in 2011 after a long battle with cancer. However, Wetzel and Rosenson remained close through the passing decades and found happiness in their shop, their furry clients, and new life with the birth of Wetzel’s two children. “A lot of heartache and happiness have happened here, said a pensive Wetzel. “This is so much of our life, this is all we know. “It’s the only way we know how to be, agreed Rosenson. In continuing with tradition and a hometown feel, Wetzel and Rosenson don’t use in-store computers preferring instead to build relationships with clients. Many of their clients are regular visitors and some are third and fourth generation clients. “We don’t do computers, said Wetzel. “We talk in person or over the phone. I want to know our clients. My computer doesn’t know you, I know you. We ask about vacations, we follow up

about family pets, and our clients know our whole life story, said Wetzel. Duke and Dutchess has a third, smaller and furrier shop presence. His name is Nacho, the store’s official greeter, and Wetzel’s dog. Wetzel, Rosenson and Nacho are so well known and regarded, hardly a person walks by without a knowing wave or greeting. While reminiscing about the store’s past, a young woman stopped by to greet them and update them that her lost dog had been found. Rosenson happily tore the “Lost Dog sign from the shop’s window with the news. “It’s that old school kind of family thing that shops don’t have anymore, said Rosenson. “We get to know people here on a firstname basis. Working in a pet grooming store it comes as no surprise that both Wetzel and Rosenson are animal lovers, Wetzel owning Nacho and a cat, and Rosenson owning two chihuahuas. Of all the reasons they love their job, the first that comes to mind for Wetzel is the dogs, holding true to the shop slogan “The Family Shop for the Family Pet. Duke and Dutchess sells cat and dog supplies and offers pet grooming for all tame pets except birds. Rosenson has even previously groomed a pet monkey. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are appreciated. The shop is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 305821-1542.

DID YOU KNOW? Miami Lakes greenery originally sprouted from one nursery! By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff One of the captivating features of Miami Lakes is its green canopies shading residents from the Florida sun. Unbeknownst to many, nearly all the original trees in Miami Lakes came from a single nursery. During the planning stages of the community of Miami Lakes, a few years before any developments were made, a nursery was established and stocked with tens of thousands of trees and shrubs so while construction on the town moved forward there would be enough greenery to meet demand. As the homes in Miami Lakes were built, the nursery stock grew and supplied nearly all the trees and shrubs planted around Miami Lakes, with the exception of the fully grown Sabal Palmetto trees. The importance of the environment has long been a central value to the heart of Miami Lakes. In one of the original columns of The Miami Laker sometime in 1973 it reads: “We’ve been conscious of our ecology long before the word came into popular usage. We have added, throughout the years, significantly to the biology, botany and topography of the land. What we have done in the field of arboriculture is the envy of all. These accomplishments are highly reassuring to every individual who is concerned about ecology and the environment - on the contrary, we have enriched and enhanced this environment with parks,

THE FORMER MIAMI LAKES NURSERY, which provided many of the trees and shrubs planted in the new community in the 1960’s and 1970’s, was located west of N.W. 57 Avenue on the site of what is now Miami Lakes Educational Center and the Miami Lakes Commerce Center. lakes, greenways and thousands of fully-grown trees.” Many types of trees were chosen to be planted in Miami Lakes, among them the Black Olive, Mahogany, Coconut Palm, Live Oak, Areca Palm, Seagrape, Bottlebrush, Florida Orchid Tree, Pongam, Tabebuia Pallida and the Sabal Palmetto, also known as the Cabbage Palmetto, the official state tree. In 1974, at a time where the community had nearly 4,000 coconut palms, Miami Lakes began a drive against the “Lethal Yellowing” disease that attacks many species of palm trees. After

nearly two years of work for treating and preventing the spread of the disease, most trees were saved and those lost were replaced with the disease-resistant Malayan Dwarf Coconut Palm. Trees and the greenery of Miami Lakes continues to be an important facet of the community and all those in it.

Tree planting ceremony to honor Breanna Vergara By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff On Saturday, May 9, family, friends and all who were touched by the life of 11-year-old Breanna Vergara joined together at the southwest corner of Royal Oaks Park to honor Vergara with a tree planting ceremony in her name. Vergara unexpectedly passed on December 9, 2014, due to a heart attack during dance practice. “This event was very special to us and there are no words to convey our gratitude for our friends and the community we live in and how they are helping honor and

remember our daughter,” said the Vergara family. “This tree is located in a park where Bre-Bre would play in the playground and ride bike in, it’s very appropriate that a tree dedicated to her would be found in such a happy place with so much life around it. I hope this helps our grieving community heal, and gives all her friends a place to go to and remember her and everything she exemplified.” The Breanna Vergara Foundation was established on February 9 by Breanna’s parents, Jesus and Claudia Vergara, and her younger sister Gabriella Vergara.

In continuing with Breanna’s passion for dance, the Breanna Vergara Foundation will serve those who are pursuing passions and may be struggling through financial limitations. The Breanna Vergara Foundation’s mission is to “foster

and promote a healthy, fun, happy and passionate lifestyle, offering opportunities through scholarships and grants to participate in programs, activities or classes to those who are financially challenged.” The non-profit foundation has run for the “I Care I Cure 5k” for

Cancer in early March, and the Human Race supporting HandsOnMiami in April. For more information on The Breanna Vergara Foundation visit www.facebook.com/thebreannavergarafoundation.

‘Things You Shouldn’t Say Past Midnight’ returns to Main St. Playhouse June 12-13 Back by popular demand, The Main Street Players presents the return of last year’s surprise hit, Things You Shouldn't Say Past Midnight: A Comedy In Three Beds. In the heat of lovemaking, an ethnic slur is uttered, leading to a sublimely ridiculous 3 a.m. conference call involving a quarreling couple, a vixen and her hitman lover, and a gay psychologist and

his much older lover. Warning: sexual content and strong language. Directed by Andres E. Hernandez, this original work was written by Peter Ackerman of "The Ice Age" movies fame, and ran off Broadway for six months and regionally throughout the United States. Tickets for adults 18 or older are $10 each and can be purchased at the door or online at www.mainstreetplayers.com. For more information call 305-5583737.

American High’s Carmen Sandino recognized as a 2015 Silver Knight Carmen Sandino, a senior at American Senior High School, was named as one of 30 students throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties and selected among hundreds of applicants for this year’s Silver Knight award winners, a program created and continued by The Miami Herald to showcase the accomplishments of local students. The winners were announced at the James L. Knight Center in Downtown Miami on May 20. Sandino reportedly asked her foster care agency for information about college opportunity and was told that less than 3 percent of foster children earn a bachelor’s degree. Undeterred, Sandino found a tutoring agency to tutor her for free, and armed with information about the ACT, SAT and college applications, Sandino passed along that information and tutored other foster children. One of those students, with the help of Sandino’s tutoring, was able to double her ACT scores and earned a $90,000 scholarship to the school of her choice. Sandino was awarded the Silver Knight in English and Literature for Miami-Dade County. Additionally, Sandino is the recipient of a Florida Youth Shining Star Award, president of her school’s HOSA club, and the winner of American’s Outstanding Mathematics Student Award for 2013. Several local students were also Honorable Mentions for various categories. Among those were Esteban Gonzalez from Mater Academy in Mathematics, Fabian

Pace alumnus Kendall Montgomery joins Dolphins By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Kendall Montgomery, a Class of 2010 alumnus from Monsignor Edward Pace High School and a former defensive end with Bowling Green State University, signed as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins in early May. With this signing, Montgomery fulfilled his dream of becoming a professional football player. At

Pace, he was an accomplished multi-sport player in football and basketball. As part of the Bowling Green Falcons, he helped the team win the MAC Championship game in 2013. Anthony Walker, Pace’s assistant football coach, credits Montgomery’s success to his work ethic at Pace and at Bowling Green. “It’s great for him and his family for him to pursue his dream of being a professional player, and it’s great that he’s able to come back home,” said Walker.

Shula’s Golf Club hosts a Family Fun Night for parents and children Shula’s Golf Club hosted a “Family Fun Night” in early May to expose families and children to the enjoyment of golf. Children of all ages participated and learned the fundamentals of the full swing using a system called SNAG which stands for “Starting New At Golf.” The SNAG system features a larger ball and a larger and lighter golf club simplifying the difficult task of striking the ball straight and far. “When success is achieved using SNAG, it makes the transition to the standard equipment much easier,” said Shula’s Golf Professional Pete Wyndorf. After the full swing, the children participated in a “Glow in the Dark” putting contest. With a cool summer evening and glow in the dark golf balls rolling toward targets, a good time was had by all with prizes handed out to the best putters. Shula’s offers Summer Golf Camps for junior golfers and beginners. In the week-long camp children will learn the full swing, chipping, pitching, and putting in addition to the rules of golf, etiquette and proper conduct on the golf course. For more information on junior golf, contact Shula’s Golf Club at 305-820-8088.

THE MIAMI LAKER

MLEC’s Neyda Borges is Una Maestra Especial By Daniela Morales Special to The Miami Laker “Una Maestra Especial” translates to “a special teacher.” Every year Univision hosts a contest for the “Una Maestra Especial” award, similar to MDCPS’ award “Teacher of the Year,” in which teachers are nominated by their colleagues. The winner is chosen by a designated committee. What’s different with “Una Maestra Especial” is that students, not just teachers and administrators, are able to submit letters and essays to the network Univision, nominating a teacher they feel deserves to be the special teacher of the year. Such was the case with Neyda Borges, English Department chair at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC). “We were so excited to nominate Mrs. Borges for ‘Una Maestra Especial’ because she’s always enthusiastic to get us involved in contests. We wanted to do the same for her,” said Stephanie Brito, a junior in the journalism strand of the Cambridge Academy at MLEC and the student whose essay won Borges the title. “When I came across the application for ‘Una Maestra Especial,’ I immediately thought of Mrs. Borges,” said Maria Vasquez, a junior in the journalism strand at Miami Lakes Educational Center. “To me, she is not only an English and journalism teacher – she is a friend, role model, and guide.” Vasquez, along with another five journalism students, started the task of having their favorite teacher chosen as the most special teacher of the year.

“What I wrote about and what I think impacted the judges at Univision most is that when all other teachers are home, Mrs. Borges is still here at school, because she cares about us and doesn’t mind going the extra mile,” said Brito. “I don’t know how to turn off my lights and close my door at 2:20 pm. I can’t not give all of me,” said Borges. Borges has received recognition before, ranging from the “Beyond the Bell” Award from the Chamber of Commerce, to being recognized by Mayor Wayne Slaton and the Miami Lakes Town Council to the very prestigious honor of serving as the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Region I Teacher of the Year in 2011. “It was a great honor to be selected Teacher of the Year. It was flattering professionally because my colleagues nominated me. It was rewarding because other teachers, parents and administrators sat in my class and selected me to represent our region at the District level; but ‘Un Maestro Especial' is special’," said Borges. “What matters the most are the kids. To be nominated by them means that I am making an impact on them, that they enjoy coming to class and learning, that they feel the passion I put into my work,” she said. Borges graduated from the University of Miami in 2003 with degrees in Journalism and English. Mere chance began her teaching career. She wanted to make a difference and do her part to make the the world better, even in the small-

est of ways. She took a chance and started her career at MLEC in August 2005. She became one of the anchors of the Cambridge Academy in 2006, heading the journalism program, one of the academies’ three strands. In the ten school years teaching at MLEC, she has certainly made an impact. She has helped her students get accepted to Ivy League Universities. She has seen them open their own businesses and firms, she has travelled across the country to attend their college graduations. She remains a force in their lives long after they leave the halls of MLEC,” said Helena Castro, activities director at MLEC. Not only does Borges encourage her students, she sets an example for them. She was once a freelance writer for WLRN and now runs her own blog where she posts news and opinion articles. “She has a lasting impact on her students because the skills she helps them develop they can use for a lifetime and they do because of the work she puts in with them,” said Erica Evans-DeSimone, MLEC's Cambridge Academy Leader. Throughout her years as a teacher, she has worked to help and shape students. She helps her AP Literature students learn to identify symbols and write eloquent essays and she is present for them at all times, whether they need help correcting an essay or help with creating a club. “Mrs. Borges was our mentor, advisor, and coach throughout our entire Girls Who Code launch.

PICTURED (from left) are Chief Communications Officer for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Daisy Gonzalez-Diego, MLEC student Giancarlo Tejeda, MLEC English Dept. Chair Neyda Borges and MDCPS Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho at Univision’s Una Maestra Especial award event. Even though she’s not our official sponsor, she’s helped us make our mark in the technology field. She’s given us advice, proofread our

resumes and coached us every step of the way,” said Michele Wu and Joanna Luo.

M-Dade School Board OKs two Perla Hantman initiatives The Miami-Dade County School Board unanimously approved two items proposed by Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman at its regular meeting in mid May endorsing a national seat belt enforcement campaign from May 18 through May 31, 2015 and May as vision health awareness month. “The National 2015 “Click It or Ticket” campaign promotes seat

belt usage, which is the single most effective way to reduce injuries and fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. On the importance of vision health, statistics indicate that every 12 minutes someone develops a problem with their vision. The effects of many eye-related diseases can be reduced or eliminated with regular eye examinations,” said Hantman.

Each device is upgraded in the form of HP Revolve Hybird laptop/tablets for facility members. In 2007, Dade Christian School partnered with United Data Technologies Inc. (UDT), which has been integral in the refreshing of the school’s workstations and infrastructure in 2008 and once

again in 2014-2015. DCS’s long-standing relationship with UDT, a leading provider of high-performance technology solutions, spans both the professional and personal levels. UDT co-founders and DCS alumni, Henry Fleches and Gerard Amaro’s friendship began on the Dade Christian football field. After college, Fleches and Amaro reunited to form what is now one of the 50 fastest growing IT firms in the U.S., according to Everything Channel. UDT’s largest clients include Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Hillsborough County Public Schools, the state of Florida and the Miami Marlins. In addition to the recent technological upgrades, Dade Christian School has implemented the use of SMART and Promethean boards, Apple TV’s, tablets and ebooks for the secondary students, table and touch sensitive laptop mobile carts, as well as ActiVote response systems for the elementary classrooms. For more information about the technology upgrades or academic program, call the Admissions Office at 305-827-8767.

M-Dade Public Schools graduate over 21,000 students Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) held senior high school graduations between May 27 and June 4. Over 21,000 graduating seniors from more than 50 high schools across the district received their high school diplomas and will continue their educational pursuits at post-secondary institutions in Florida and across the nation. According to school district

data, an impressive 93.67 percent of M-DCPS graduating seniors plan to attend college. Many graduating seniors have already begun their college education earning an Associate in Arts degree through dual-enrollment programs, which allow them to enroll in college courses for credit prior to high school graduation. Additionally, this year, scholarships totaling more than $310 million dollars

have been awarded to the district’s college-bound seniors. “We are extremely proud of our graduating seniors for all of their hard work and determination,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “We will celebrate the milestone our students have accomplished and will also send them off to a new chapter in their lives.”

DADE CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS’ Business Education Instructor, Mustapha Anako is excited about the upgrade for his middle school lab. “These workstations are tools we can use to enhance the student’s learning,” he said.

Pace and Barry honor first EMT Academy grads By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Six Monsignor Edward Pace High School seniors became a part of the school’s history by graduating as the first class of Pace’s Academy of Health Sciences in

conjunction with Barry University’s EMT Academy program at a ceremony in Pace’s Innovation Center on May 19. In front of their families, friends, and students from the Academy of Health Sciences,

PACE ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES Lead Teacher Kevin LaGrange (left), Pace EMT Academy graduates Mitchy Leandre, Carina Jatib, Juanesha Serra, Danielle Dalge, Michelle Montoya, Dr. Terri Hernandez, EMT Academy graduate Sabrina Cabrera, Jason Smith, and Jorge Nunez pose for a group photo following the six seniors’ EMT Academy graduation ceremony on May 19.

Mitchy Leandre, Danielle Dalge, Juanesha Serra, Carina Jatib, Michelle Montoya, and Sabrina Cabrera were the first group to graduate from Pace’s EMT Academy class, and also from Barry University’s specialized EMT Program. Kevin LaGrange, lead teacher for the Academy of Health Sciences and a Pace alumnus, was the main presenter for the ceremony. As the girls were also Barry University students, LaGrange was supported by Dr. Terri Hernandez, Barry University’s Assistant Dean in Career Education; Jason Smith, EMS Program Director; and Jorge Nunez, the girls’ EMT Academy teacher. All four reminisced on the journey the six girls had taken and on the unique place in history the six will have. “Your face[s] will be attached to this program for infinity,” said Smith. With this graduation, the six girls can sit for the National Registry of EMT exam to earn their EMT certification and continue in the medical field. Sabrina Cabrera in particular will be mov-

ing directly into Barry University’s Emergency Responder program this fall. In addition to their certificates of completion, the seniors received specialized EMT pins from LaGrange and high-quality Littmann stethoscopes from Barry University. After taking the podium themselves and thanking their families and everyone who has supported them, the six girls turned the tables by gifting pictures frames and hand-crafted thank you cards to LaGrange,

Nunez, and Smith. To conclude the ceremony, the six became the first group to take part in a new tradition: LaGrange allowed them to shave his head in front of everyone in attendance. After they recovered from the surprise, the six took turns shaving his head as friends and families gathered around to record the moment. LaGrange says he plans to have his hair regrown in time for the 17 juniors who will take the EMT course as seniors next school year.

HML art students honored by Cong. Mario Diaz-Balart Works of art created by Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High (HML) art students were recently on display inside the Mary Collins Community Center. The HML students were among a group of student artists honored by U.S. Congressman Mario Diaz Balart for their achievements in creativity and expression. The congressman spoke to a group of students, parents and teachers about the importance of art in education and students contributing to their community. One

of the works of art will be selected by the congressman to be displayed in the halls of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. The art works included paintings, photographs and drawings created by students from both Dade and Broward counties. The HML students who participated are part of the school’s Advanced Placement art class in which students create advanced works of art throughout the year and assemble a portfolio with their accumulated works of art for college credit.

American High students win first place in Project Citizen state finals

AMERICAN SENIOR HIGH students led by Law Academy lead teacher Richard Browning (center) celebrate their first place state win for Project Citizen.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff American Senior High School’s Law Academy is celebrating it’s first place win for Miami-Dade County and first place win for state finals in Project Citizen. Despite this being the first year that American participated in Project Citizen, it has advanced to every round of the competition with flying colors. The project is set to be judged at Nationals. Project Citizen is a program

sponsored by the Center for Civic Education designed to promote responsible participation in local and state government. The student group’s project was focused on creating sidewalks along N.W. 57 Avenue from 183 Street to 173 Drive. Multiple pedestrian accidents convinced the students to pursue the issue for their project. “The students are extremely excited and proud to have come in first place,” said Richard Browning, lead Law Academy

teacher. Hialeah Miami Lakes students came in second place for the county high school division Project Citizen competition and advanced to state finals. Country Club Middle School earned first place in the middle school division and advanced to state finals. Bob Graham Education Center came in fourth place for the middle school division and advanced to state finals.

Monsignor Edward Pace High student Christopher Gonzalez was among nine Catholic high-school students awarded full tuition scholarships by St. Thomas University to help them further their education and be competitive in their respective job market field. The new 2015 Catholic Education Continuum Scholarships are awarded annually to one student from each of the Catholic high schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, cover the complete annual tuition for up to four consecutive years of full-time study. To qualify for the scholarship, Gonzalez and other applicants had to meet criteria that demonstrated a record of strong academic achievement and a dedication to higher education. The scholarship is part of a greater collaboration with Catholic high schools that will also ensure that students not only graduate, but finish sooner and better prepared for today’s competitive marketplaces. Also recognized as 2015 St.

CHRISTOPHER GONZALEZ Thomas University Catholic Education Continuum Scholarship recipients and Presidential Scholars were St. Thomas Aquinas’ Antoun Chebat, Archbishop McCarthy’s Jason Alvaro Diaz, School of the Sacred Heart’s Nicole Diaz, ChaminadeMadonna’s Nicholas Izquierdo, St. Brendan High School’s Carlos Planchat, Cardinal Newman’s Kasey Rivera, Christoper Columbus High’s Alberto Rodriguez, and Archbishop Curley Notre Dame’s Darby Vilme.

Spanish Lake Elementary students learn finance with stock market games Spanish Lake Elementary (SLE) students were introduced to the basics of the stock market and how it works as part of the economy. The engaging activity incorporated the county’s Bring Your Own Device Initiative used for teamwork and study with parent consent. Those who participated in this grade five enrichment activity, watched their investments as if they were their own, understood types of investing and the benefits of diversification. The activity opened up a new world using mathematical, analytical, and research skills. The students learned ownership and came to understand influence in most companies through their family purchases. Jacqueline Arias-Gonzalez, SLE principal, shared some of the student comments about their new-found knowledge as they showed her what they learned. “While doing business and making money with investments, I also learned how to work within a group and to listen and consider each person’s research and input,”

From The Stock Market Game, teacher and sponsor Sharon Wallen indicated that the students

have learned important lessons linked to real world experiences. “These children have a promising financial future and have gained a feeling of empowerment and the need to budget and save,” said Wallen.

Hantman honors Eco-hero art winner Miami-Dade School Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman honored student Justine Padron as the winner of Zoo Miami’s and Local 10’s Eco-Hero Contest during a special recognition at the School Board Meeting in early May. “Justine represents the best that Miami-Dade County Public Schools has to offer,” said Hantman. “Her remarkable achievement is a testament to her passion, devotion and inspiring enthusiasm for the environment.”

Padron, a 7th grade student at Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy, was one of five finalists nominated from the tri-county area for doing something extraordinary to help the environment. In addition, Padron makes ecofriendly terrariums for her friends and volunteers at South Florida parks. Padron won an all-expense paid Eco-Adventure trip for this summer to the Canadian Rockies with Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill and Local 10 anchor Kristi Krueger.

At HML, students enrolled in Dual Enrollment courses are able to complete college courses taught by their high school teachers without leaving the campus. Bryant, who is also a member of the Student Government Association and the school’s Sapphire Dance Team, has also

C’YARA BRYANT been accepted to Florida A & M University in Tallahassee where she will be attending in the fall.

Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) received an Honorable Mention for placing fourth in the We the People National Invitational and winning the Unit Six Award for being the highest scoring unit during the first two rounds of the competition. Under the direction of Jackeline Hernandez, Ingy Cruz, John Brady and Richard Tapia, the students worked to prepare for the competition which took place in late April. “Although we did not advance to the finals, we were able to watch the other teams and can say that we are truly honored to be among such formidable contenders like Virginia, which won first place, Indiana the two-time national winners which took second, and Oregon which placed third,” said Hernandez. The students and teachers are humbled by the outpouring of support from the Miami Lakes community. “Our students, teachers, administration and parents thank everyone who made this civic experience a reality,” said Hernandez.
