Voters approve major charter changes for M. Lakes By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes town government has a fresh, new look following the overwhelming approval of 10 town charter amendments that were proposed to voters in a May 17 mail-in ballot election. One of the key amendments approved by 71 percent of those voting reinstates a provision for a run-off election if no one candidate wins over 50 percent of the vote in a general election. The run-off election was among the changes proposed by the Miami Lakes Charter Revision

Commission, which wanted residents to elect council and mayoral candidates by a majority, and became the centerpiece of a campaign between The Graham Companies and a political action committee labeled Concerned Voters of Miami Lakes. The latter group, whose principals were not identified except for a known political consultant living in Miami Gardens, sent out mailers urging residents to vote no on all of the proposed changes indicating residents would lose their rights and would lead to tax increases.

In a move to defeat what many residents called a campaign of misleading information, The Graham Companies and former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham urged residents to promote good government by changing the town charter. Graham lent his position on the 50 plus one vote and other charter changes, as The Graham Companies sent out door flyers with the image of Graham celebrating his first gubernatorial election victory in 1978. Had it not been for a run off election, he would’ve lost. In a Miami Laker article con-

cerning the significance of approving the amendments, especially the run-off, Graham advocated for “Civic Engagement and Good Governance.” “I write to you because your vote for the town’s proposed charter changes is very important,” Graham said in the article. “I plan to vote Yes on all proposed Charter Review items. While all of the issues are important, I believe the most significant item is the amendment regarding the majority vote. This issue is personal to me. I finished second in the 1978 campaign for governor. Because Florida had

a majority vote election, which required a majority of Florida voters support to be elected, there was a run off. I was then elected and had the honor to serve you for eight years.” A majority of town voters sided with Graham and now candidates must muster 51 percent of the votes to avoid a run-off election. “We were certainly blessed by the involvement of Senator Bob Graham on this matter,” said resident Pilar Pedrosa Dalmau. “In my opinion, it really made a difference the way he explained to our com-

Voters approve sweeping changes to Town of Miami Lakes government (Continued from Page 1) munity why yes was the right choice.” The 50-plus-1 amendment becomes effective for the town’s November 8 general election where 13 candidates are vying for the mayoral position and three council seats. Miami Lakes’ first mayor Wayne Slaton and Council-members Ceasar Mestre and Manny Cid have filed papers to run for the top political spot. Current Mayor Michael Pizzi, who claimed the charter changes were an attack against him, has yet to open a campaign account for reelection. Xiomara Pazos, who unsuccessfully ran against Mestre in 2014, and political neophytes Robin Brown-Beamon and Jose Nodal Jr. are challenging incumbent Councilmember Tony Lama for Seat 3. Political neophytes Esther Colon, Nayib Hassan, Wendy Milanes, Caridad Vasallo and Alejandro Sanchez are running for Seat 5, which Cid must give up to run for mayor. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez is so far running unopposed for his reelection to Seat 1. In other amendments that were approved, the winner of the mayoral race will now have some limited powers, as 66 percent of voters changed a provision in the charter that will allow all elected officials to nominate the next town manager with public input instead of the mayor having the sole nom-

inating responsibility. Voters also chose the same format for picking the next town attorney, as 69 percent said yes. The town charter changes also reflect a new structure of government by bringing it more in line with a Council-Manager form of bureaucracy, as 58 percent of voters approved the Charter Revision Commission’s proposal to change the current Mayor-CouncilManager administration. Other approved charter amendments include having the vice mayor fill the vacancy of the mayor for the duration of the vice mayor’s term, and by special election in the event that the remainder of the mayor’s term is longer than the vice mayor’s term in office; amending the Citizen’s Bill of Rights to provide that the town designate the representatives rather than the mayor to represent the town at all proceeding before the county, state and federal governments; and voters approved a minimum of four council members can call a special meeting instead of the mayor having that

sole responsibility. According to the Miami-Dade Elections Department, among the 17,841 registered voters in Miami Lakes, 3,125 voters cast their mail-in ballots for a 17.52 percent turnout. Residents’ approval for a revised town charter could be a sign of things to come in November. Pizzi, who overtly opposed the charter changes and is still mulling a reelection bid, has become a polarizing figure since his arrest in 2013 and subsequent acquittal on public corruption charges. Miami Lakes Charter Revision Commission chairman Dr. David Bennett said the vast majority of voters saw a need for a change on how the government should be operated. “About 70 percent of the voters have spoken and approved the charter changes” he said. Bennett said albeit he chaired the group, the rest of the committee members deserve the credit after residents approved all of their charter amendments.

Giuseppe Zuozo brings ‘Taste of Italy’ to Miami Lakes with Anacapri Restaurant By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Giuseppe Zuozo learned how to cook, like many Italians do, from his mother. Born in Anacapri, a small comune above the island of Capri in Naples, Italy, Zuozo brought his love of good Italian cooking to the Sunshine State in 1990. After visiting Florida for a number of years, and tasting Italian cuisine available here, Zuozo said “I felt I could do better.” He opened his first restaurant, Anacapri, in Pinecrest in 1990. While looking to expand his business he came across Miami Lakes, a town he noted for the active family involvement which is what he was searching for. Launching the second Anacapri location at 6125 Miami Lakes Drive in the Lake Katharine shopping center, Zuozo hit the ground running with an opening on Friday, May 20. The restaurant, which is already seeing a number of guests filling up the intimate space, is also a concept for an Italian market and wine bar in addition to fine dining. Guests find racks of wine from all over the world immediately to their left as they enter, and further down a small market that houses meats, cheeses and pasta imported directly from Italy, many items, Zuozo notes, are from his own hometown. “These are not items you can find in any store,” he said. “I’m hoping to introduce a variety of wine to the community.”

GIUSEPPE ZUOZO in market inside new Anacapri Restaurant. The wine bar offers a variety of wine and certain selections of beer which will expand in the future. As part of the concept, guests are able to peruse the wine available in the market sold at reduced rates and for a small corking fee can enjoy it with their meal. Additional concepts such as wine-tasting evenings and happy hour are to be announced. The menu offers Italian classics and some lesser known dishes, most of which are Zuozo’s own creations. Meals are cooked with fresh ingredients, locally sourced or imported directly from Italy. When the head chef, who has been working for Zuozo for the past 25

years, takes a night off, guests can find Zuozo cooking the meals. He notes the importance of consistency in creating the dishes. When asked which dishes are his favorite he chuckles and ponders for a moment before admitting “That’s like asking which child I love the most!” He settles on seafood risotto and fiocchi, a pasta filled with four different cheeses and pears. Anacapri is open Tuesdays through Thursday for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays evening hours are extended to 11 p.m. and Sundays are open from 4 to 9 p.m.

Gus Machado continues legacy of philanthropy

GUS MACHADO AND HIS WIFE LILLIAM

YOU’D NEVER BUILD A HOUSE BY YOURSELF, SO WHY BUILD YOUR FINANCES THAT WAY? A Prudential financial professional can assess your situation, clarify your goals, and help you build a secure future. To learn more, call me today.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Gus Machado sits behind a large wooden desk that was left behind, along with nearly all the other furniture in the office, by the former owner of the dealership on 49th street in Hialeah when Machado acquired it in the mid 80’s. The walls are lined with vinyl wood paneling, reminiscent of 1960’s, and tips off those who enter just how long Machado has been in business. Machado says his first investment was $50 on a 1934 dodge, which he bought because it was made the same year he was born, and after one ride around the parking lot of his high school, the black dodge promptly died. After five years of working at the Caterpillar Tractor company in Joliet, Illinois, Machado along with his then-wife and three children, migrated to Miami because of the weather, which Machado said reminded him of Cuba. He combed through newspapers to find a gas station for sale, which he intended to buy and begin his own business for the simple pursuit of his passion – cars. “I loved cars and wanted to do repairs on them since I was a young kid,” said Machado. “Buying the gas station worked out well for me because I was able to learn how to do small repairs, tune-ups, grease jobs and more while I ran my business.” The gas station he purchased on North Miami Avenue and 17th Street went well for him until the old lift that held up a 1951

Chevrolet broke and the car fell upside down, damaging the roof which caved in. No one was hurt but it led to Machado’s first car sale - his own. “I had a 1949 Chevy convertible and I tried to trade with the owner of the damaged car. We settled on a price and he drove away in my convertible and I repaired the roof of the other car.” After his accident turned opportunity, Machado purchased damaged cars to repair and sell from the back of his gas station. He did this until he partnered with Alan Parker, who Machado called “a God for car dealerships” 3 at the time, and created the floor plan for his first dealership. “The rest as they say is history,” said Machado. Through trial and error, Machado built his empire and in addition to his name on the signs of dealerships and a shopping plaza in Hialeah he once owned, Machado’s name is also visible at St. Thomas University’s Gus Machado School of Business. Machado donated $5 million to the school and cites his history in business as well as a belief in the vision of the school’s president, Monsignor Franklyn M. Casales, as his explanation for the hefty sum. “My entire life I have been very lucky. I have been able to achieve what many people without capital have not been able to, and it is important to give back. Ever since I was born I’ve been sharing things, a tradition made by my grandfather,” said Machado.

“Business school is so important. Students have to learn what business leaders already know, they have to catch up and learn the structure of business and how to conduct themselves and then build on that.” Machado and his wife of 16 years, Lilliam, are also deeply involved in the American Cancer Society which honored the couple this year for their work in the organization and their multiple contributions. Lilliam, who joined as a volunteer after a young member of her family was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and recovered, is instrumental in the organization’s efforts to promote prevention, education, and raise funds for research. “We were honored at the gala and I was appreciative but I told them I don’t need to be honored,” said Lilliam. “I love what I do. Gus has a heart the size of this room and whatever we do, we do it with joy and because God has blessed us tremendously. We haven’t found a cure yet, but we are celebrating more birthdays and this is because of advancement in drugs for treatment developed with grants from the American Cancer Society.” Machado has photos along the walls of his office of himself and several presidents. He is what some have called an immigrant success story and he and his wife intend to continue giving back to the community of Hialeah and Miami Lakes, where they reside, for years to come.

Cub Scout Pack 660 enjoys camping at Keetah Boy Scout Camp in Jupiter During the last weekend of April, Cub Scout Pack 660 of Miami Lakes, chartered to Miami Lakes United Methodist Church and affiliated with Miami Lakes K-8 Center, enjoyed a scouting adventure.

The scouts camped at Tanah Keetah Boy Scout Camp in Jupiter where they successfully hiked the famed “Mike Machek Trail.” This 5.5 mile-long hike allowed the scouts, and willing family members, to experience a little of

every South Florida ecosystem. They hiked on sugar sand, over highlands, through a Pine Forest, across an arid desert, around gator lakes, and into muddy hog wallows and swamps. Along the trail were 40 markers, each corresponding to a lesson about the area or species in their area. It was hot, and hard, especially navigating through ankle deep water and mud holes. As a result of their efforts, the scouts, ages 10, 8 and 7 were awarded Machek Trail badges. The adventure continued off the Trail as the area’s famously fierce raccoon tried nightly to steal their food, armadillos and hogs circled their site, while deer, snakes, alligators and many birds of prey were seen on the trip. The scouting adventure is open to all boys ages 7 to 11 (1st through 5th grades) in Pack 660 which meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church under the leadership of Cub Master Sean Schwinghammer.

Major renovation underway at Cypress Village Shopping Center includes new building The Graham Companies announced a major renovation of the Cypress Village Shopping Center is underway. Built in 1972 with some of its original tenants still in operation, such as Duke & Dutchess Pet Center and The Beverly Hills Cafe, the update is being welcomed. The renovation involves the design and building of a new 12,000 square-foot building as well as a complete overhaul to the exterior of the existing buildings. The project’s general contractor is Beacon Constructors. The renovation was started with the demolition of the former Blockbuster, a 6,600 square-foot building, or depending on how long readers have lived in Miami Lakes, the building may best be remembered as the original Miami Lakes Community Center, home for the community’s arts and crafts classes, and meetings of the Miami Lakes Civic Association. The new retail structure will have prime visibility/exposure to Miami Lakes Drive with leasable spaces ranging from 1,400 square feet to 6,000 square feet. The existing four buildings will have an exterior update with the addition of 4 new towers. Signage will be raised from the awnings to the parapet wall above the overhang roof which is also being heightened by 2 feet. This will give existing and future businesses more visibility. The shopping center’s parking

will be increased with 89 new parking spaces ensuring ample parking for all customers at the center. Brand new sidewalks, lighting, tile roofs are also scheduled as well as all storefront glass will be replaced with Hurricaneproof glass. The Graham Companies is optimistic that the renovation will create an increased interest from retailers to lease at Cypress Village. Gaucho’s Gourmet Market is a new merchant opening later this summer. Gaucho’s is not only a market with butcher shop, bakery, Deli and wines, but it will have a kitchen ready to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner within minutes. During the renovation, all businesses will be open and the local community is encouraged to support these businesses during the construction. For information on leasing opportunities, contact Phillip Wyllie at 305-817-4005.

Vergara, and sister Gabby, turned out to honor Breanna. Her tragic death prompted the Breanna Vergara Foundation with a goal to make sure all kids who participate in sports and other physical activities in Miami Lakes have a free EKG at local hospitals to detect any heart conditions that can impact their lives. The Town Council recently passed the Sudden Cardiac Awareness Policy - “Breanna Saves Lives Act,” encouraging parents to have their children tested before participating in any Town programs requiring physical exertion. The policy makes it a mandatory practice for the Town and its program providers to inform youth athletes/program participants, their families, and coaches of sudden cardiac arrest, and the options available for prevention.

Miami Lakes recently designated N.W. 164 Street as Breanna Vergara Way to honor the 11-yearold Town resident and avid dancer who fell unexpectedly to sudden cardiac arrest during a dance class on December 9, 2014. The family later learned that Vergara passed from WolffParkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, a condition where an extra electrical connection exists between the upper and lower chambers of the heart, which can be easily detected with an EKG screening. On May 17, Miami Lakes officials, family members and members of the community gathered at the corner of N.W. 88 Court and 164 Street to unveil the Breanna Vergara Way street sign near Royal Oaks Park. event takes place on June 20, the longest day of the year, but participants can complete an event prior to that date. Held annually on the summer solstice, The Longest Day symbolizes the seemingly endless journey so many facing Alzheimer’s disease are asked to endure. Participants will complete approximately 16 hours of activity ranging from running, cooking, knitting to playing bridge, to help advance Alzheimer’s care, support and research. For Jessica Comellas, Miami Lakes resident and piano teacher, the event allows her to honor her Nana, Ileana Merino, who was diagnosed in 2012 with Alzheimer’s. Comellas learned

how to play piano on the lap of her Nana, who was a classically trained pianist from Cuba, and piano teacher before she was diagnosed. On Saturday May 14, Comellas along with some of her Nana’s past piano students, family and friends took shifts playing a piano at the Don Shula’s Hotel lobby, 6842 Main Street, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter. “My Nana loved music, and she instilled that love in me,” Comellas said. “I can’t think of a better activity than to do what we both loved so much – playing the piano.”

Sotolongo will attend training in Texas for a month before moving on to an HIV camp in Africa for two weeks and finally board the ship while it’s docked in Benin, Africa for 10 months. Pace baseball coach, ace pitcher, honored at All-Dade athletic awards

PACE HIGH baseball coach Tom Duffin (above right) was named 6A-2A Baseball Coach of the Year last week at the 2016 Miami Herald’s All-Dade Athletic Awards ceremony at Jungle Island. In addition, Duffin’s ace pitcher Chris Rodriguez (left above) was named 6A-2A Pitcher of the Year, who was also named to The Miami-Herald All-Dade First Team after recording an 8-2 record, 85 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.33 this past season. HML soccer star Iliana Alvardo wins grant Lady Trojans soccer star Iliana Alvarado will be playing soccer for a few more years. The Hialeah Miami Lakes senior was awarded a full scholarship to Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas. Alvarado has been the Trojans’ goalie for three years. An injury limited her play during her senior year but she was still awarded the scholarship. During her time doning the orange and blue, Alvarado

was able to average 8 to 10 saves per game. She was also known for punting the ball well past the mid field line. Aside from being a leader on the soccer field, she was a member of the prestigious iPrep magnet program, the Sorrota community service club, and the only female member of the HML drum line. Originally Alvarado planned on trying out for the team at St. Thomas University where she was

offered an academic scholarship but she did not want to pass up an opportunity to experience a new environment. “I’m really looking forward to playing at Dodge City because it will be a new challenge, a great experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity.” She will major in criminal justice. She is only the second person in her family to finish high school and attend college.

Pace loses to Jacksonville Bolles in Class 5A state championship baseball game By The Miami Laker staff Wielding a 23 game-winning streak in the Class 5A state championship game last week, Monsignor Pace baseball team knew it faced an uphill battle against Bolles of Jacksonville, ranked No. 24 in the nation. The Spartans took Bolles into extra innings but a bunt that drove in a runner in the ninth crushed Pace’s chance for the championship, as the players swallowed a dose of disbelief that their season ended, 1-0, on so many missed opportunities at Jet Blue Park in Fort Myers. Pace, which is ranked No. 1 in

Miami-Dade High School Baseball Final 2016 Power Rankings, was seeking its seventh state title in baseball, the last came in 2006, but four errors and numerous squandered scoring chances cost the Spartans the game, as players had to watch Bolles celebrate its championship win. Pace pitchers, Chris and Manny Rodriguez, held Bolles’ offense at bay but the Spartans left 12 runners stranded and a miscue on base running should’ve brought in the leading run in the seventh inning.

MLEC students present Journalism Capstone projects By Edysmar Diaz-Cruz Special to The Miami Laker At the end of every school year, seniors in the journalism strand of the Cambridge Academy at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) present a final project; they must use all the skills they have acquired throughout their years as students of Neyda Borges, the school’s Journalism adviser and English Department chair. These skills – ranging from writing, photography, designing, to film-making – are compiled into a marketable product that not only reflects the interests of the individual student, but that also retains relevance to the needs and interests of today’s millennial generation as well as older readers and viewers. Three of the nine capstones were magazines: Lessenitt Campos created De Vie, a minimalistic sports magazine tailored to women. Gabriella Indart and Ana Mijares partnered up to create PetLifestyle Magazine, a humanitarian publication devoted to informing readers about issues regarding animals. Elizabeth Martinez produced Circa Magazine, a news and culture magazine targeted at a millennial audience. The judges had the opportunity to judge two photo books. Nicole

Perez created Mi Isla, a photo book that portrays the Cuban way of life on the island. Angelie Yglesias combined photography and writing in A Writer’s Town, an anthology of short stories and poems written by local authors. Two film-centered capstones were also presented. Nathalie Mairena and Daniel Saiz created Illumination, a business that produces educational documentaries. Marissa Echeverria and Christian Steiner created a short film, Nodus Tollens, that follows the tale of a young male lead character. Vivian Bermudez took the role of a marketing freelancer and walked the judges through a female empowerment campaign with her hypothetical client, Disney. Lastly, Stephanie Brito and Maria Vasquez co-founded FloresCo, a public relations company that mainly works with small businesses and nonprofit organizations. At MLEC, it is not enough to present a final project; these projects must be presented to a panel of professionals. "It is important for students to get honest feedback from people who are currently working in the media," said Borges. “So each year, I invite journalists, photographers and media professionals from a variety of backgrounds, and

I tell them to be tough." These capstones were presented in front of a panel of judges with diverse backgrounds in mediarelated fields. This year's judges included Associated Press political reporter, Sergio Bustos, who was previously an editor at The Miami Herald; Glenna Milberg, the cohost of This Week in South Florida and a political reporter for WPLG, Local 10; Paradise Afahar, a web editor for Local 10; Michael Spears, a reporter for NBC6; Daniella Romero, who works in Marketing for Telemundo/NBC Universal; and Miami Herald tourism reporter Chabeli Herrera. Both Milberg and Bustos have judged capstones in previous years. "I am always impressed with the quality of work and professionalism that Mrs. Borges's students display. I love to see the talent that will soon be in our newsrooms," said Bustos. Students received constructive criticism that could be used to further improve and expand their projects beyond high school. “The capstone presentations featured a range of creative media options that were both professionally put together as well as indicative of the passion the students had for their projects,” said Herrera, “ I was impressed with the level of thought that went into formulating

Although they maintained contact through email, skype, and phone calls, the seniors were, for the most part, on their own. Despite this, they managed to excel on their projects and impress the judges.

Rep. Manny Diaz presents ‘A’ Flags to M. Lakes schools State Representative Manny Diaz Jr. presented two ceremonial flags to Bob Graham Education Center and Barbara Goleman Senior High for achieving an “A” grade from the state’s Department of Education. “This is a testament to the hard work from students, parents, teachers and staff,” said Diaz. “Community involvement and

excellent teachers are important reasons our schools in Miami Lakes have great results.” Goleman principal Joaquin Hernandez and BGEC principal Yecenia Martinez-Lopez, who along with students and staff received the “A” flags, have continued to excel in managing their schools into excellent centers of learning.

Miami Lakes area schools receive ‘A’ and ‘B’ grades for school year By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes schools Bob Graham Education Center, Barbara Goleman Senior High School and Miami Lakes Educational Center all received A grades for the past school year. Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Miami Lakes Middle School and Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High received a B grade. Miami Lakes Middle School’s principal, Manuel Sanchez, apart from celebrating his designation as Principal of the Year, had the following to say about his school, “After much collaboration, effort and dedication from our administrative team, faculty /staff, and students, we showed vast improvement in mathematics, reading, science and civics.” Under Sanchez’ guidance, the school moved from being drastically under enrolled at 700 students to near capacity this year. The school has also welcomed the inclusion of the Legal Studies Academy and Cambridge program. Goleman celebrated its first A grade in the school’s history and school principal Joaquin Hernandez, who returned to the school in 2008 when the graduation rate was 58 percent, has seen the school blossom and jump a number of percentage points to where it is today, at 83 percent. The difference from 2014 and 2015 was 11 points, the largest increase in all of Dade county. “We have an amazing student

services department, what we did this past year has identified about 100 students that were in danger of not graduating because of EOC state exam or missing a credit or community hours, then we divided those kids amongst the staff of students services,” said Hernandez. “Each adopted about 8 students and made regular contact with the kids to make sure they would complete their requirements. There were 32 students in danger of not graduating because of the EOC in algebra and through extra care provided through tutoring only 2 of those 32 students didn’t graduate in time.” “Bob Graham Education Center opened its doors 13 years ago and has been an ‘A’ school for 12 consecutive years,” said BGEC principal Yecenia Martinez-Lopez. “As the educational leader, it is extremely rewarding to work in a learning community where all stakeholders strive to provide the

means for all of its students to meet with success both educationally and in all life's endeavors. BGEC empowers students to become lifelong learners and contributors to our global society.” Eric Acosta, the beloved principal of HML noted the dramatic changes taking place at his school over the last five years including the addition of five magnet programs tailored to the 21st century learner. “The corner stone of the school is its nationally recognized and award-winning iPrep Academy. Our specialized faculty and partnership with Florida International University allows students to take college courses and receive college credit without having to leave campus through our dual enrollment program. Our Advanced Placement passing rate has surpassed the District average and the program has blossomed over the last two years,” said Acosta.

Mater Academy students win 10 first place FBLA awards

BGEC Bobcats donate ‘Chemo Comfort’ bags for Sylvester patients Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) Bobcat Dance Team has once again reached out to people who are in need their community. Through the guidance and encouragement of their dance coach, Mayri Martinez, and one of the dance moms, Yesse Ruano, they have reached out to cancer patients in need of love, comfort, and encouragement. When patients begin chemotherapy treat-

ments, they endure several side effects and it is important for patients to be as comfortable as possible during and after treatment. The BGEC dancers put together “Chemo Comfort Bags” that were taken to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for distribution to patients starting therapy. The bags include such items as lip balm, hard candy,

hand cream, hand sanitizer, tea bags, sweet treats, and even small journals with some encouraging words to the cancer patients. The girls hoped It would serve as a small act of kindness for those who are going through a difficult time in life, and a humble token to let them know that they are loved and others are thinking of them.

Pace High welcomes middle school, elementary students for Spartan STEM Boot Camp By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Students from fifth through eighth grade learned about science, technology, engineering, and math at Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s second annual Spartan STEM Boot Camp on May 14. Campers participated in four sessions of robotics, biology, chemistry, and engineering led by teachers and students from Pace’s Signature STEM Academy. In the Robotics sessions led by Hedda Falcon, lead teacher for the STEM Academy Emerging Computer Technologies Program, students used an iPad app to program a robot to turn and follow rectangular paths by themselves. Steps programmed into the robot were displayed on the iPads and synced with TVs inside the Innovation Center so other group

members could see the steps play out. For the Biology session, Luis Mayo, lead teacher for the STEM Academy Advanced Biomedical Sciences Program, guided students in measuring and analyzing the rate of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. Laura Lima, lead teacher for the STEM Academy Engineering Program, had students in the Engineering session build stable structures out of nothing but basic food items. Pace chemistry teacher Dr. Enrique Dominguez lit up the room with a Chemistry session that took students through the chemical reactions that give fireworks their colors, wowing campers as their Bunsen burners’ flames changed different colors.

Five Pace High students attend 2016 Youth Leadership Miami Conference By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Five students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School got unique experience and opportunities to improve their leadership skills at the 2016 Youth Leadership Miami conference sponsored by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and held at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus on April 8 and 9. Three juniors from Pace’s elite Spartan Sword and Shield program, Nicole Diaz, Allison Oddman, and Priscilla Velez, attended the conference along with senior Antonio Rodriguez and sophomore Noah Marino. The conference, which featured 141 students from high schools across Miami-Dade County, focused not just on leadership skills, but also developing an entrepreneurial spirit and encouraging community involvement. The five Pace students took part in team-building activities and trust exercises, including a tightrope, harness-supported walk on the FIU Ropes courses. They also listened to guest speakers who spoke about topics ranging from fulfilling professional goals to helping the environment. Oddman says that the conference taught her about taking initiative and “getting the most you can out of everything.” She also said that they also got to know students from different walks of life. “You learn a lot about yourself and form relationships with different students from across the county,” said Oddman.

Hialeah Miami Lakes High DECA students attend state and national competitions Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High sent off three teams of two from the DECA Club to compete at states in Orlando for Marketing Communication, Sports Entertainment and Buying and Merchandising. The teams included Ryan Menendez, Chris Hernandez, Aileen Martinez, Amanda Moreno, Jessica Basallo, and Bryan Jardines, who were required to take a 100 question test and act within a business scenario. The teams had 30 minutes

to come up with business plans that reached the goals outlined in the scenario, followed by 10 minutes to present to the judges. The teams brought home two 5th place trophies and one 6th place trophy for their work in their respective categories. Following their experience at the states competition the teams regrouped for an International DECA competition for the 70th Annual International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in late April held in Nashville, Tennessee.
