Vice Mayor Tony Lama steps down from Council By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Tony Lama is stepping down from his position to take a job with Amazon in Seattle, Washington, a lifelong dream of his that he couldn’t pass up. Lama made the announcement at a workshop two weeks ago at the Roberto Alonso Community Center at Royal Oaks Park. Lama said his phone has

been flooded with calls since he put his house up for sale and decided to share his future plans with his colleagues and residents who attended the 2018 Strategic Business Plan workshop. “I love this community, I wanted to raise my children and live here forever,” said Lama, a software engineer. “But sometimes God presents an opportunity in life that you can’t walk away from.”

Lama said it was a difficult decision to leave behind a community where he and his wife raised their four children, learned family values, and served a “great” group of residents. “I want you to know I love Miami Lakes and what the council team does and will continue to do for Miami Lakes,” he said. Lama said his resignation takes effect in July. According to the town’s charter, since Lama has more than two years left on his term, Mayor Manny Cid can fill the vacancy by appointing a resident to serve on the council until the town’s next general election in 2018. He must nominate a candito discuss ideas and issues one on one with Bovo, Cid, and other Town elected officials, and to interact with various industry leaders and colleagues in different industries. Attendance can be confirmed by contacting Joseph Sosa, assistant to the Mayor, at sosaj@miamilakes-fl.gov, or 305-364-6100, ext. 1157, by June 3.

Local businesses invited to reception with County Commission chair E. Bovo Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid has invited town businesses and their top level executives to attend a special reception to meet and greet Miami-Dade County Commission chairman Esteban Bovo Jr. The reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. The reception will offer an opportunity for business leaders

date within 30 days following the occurrence of the vacancy, and council members must approve his confirmation. However, if council members and the mayor can’t agree on a candidate, a special election will be called to fill the vacancy no later than 90 days following the occurrence of the vacancy. Lama was first elected to the Miami Lakes Town Council in 2012, when he defeated incumbent Richard Pulido for Seat 3, and he won reelection last year after defeating attorney Elizabeth Delgado. He was voted the town’s vice mayor following the swearing VICE MAYOR Tony Lama in ceremony. is moving to Seattle to (Please see Page 2) join Amazon.com.

Vice Mayor Tony Lama leaves a multitude of ideas and initiatives in the Town (Continued from Page 1) Since he took office, Lama initiated the town’s mobile app, Lakes Life, for residents to track various town services, find local businesses and report potholes and sidewalks to be repaired. The app also allows residents to track down and ride Miami Lakes Moover in realtime and view bus routes and schedules for the transit service. Lama also sponsored an ordinance to allow developers to speed up their building projects by allowing them to pull a permit before the final plat is recorded by Miami-Dade County. For transportation and mobility issues, Lama and Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez initiated the first Miami Lakes Traffic Summit, where state and county officials gathered to offer solutions to the town’s traffic problems. Lama also sponsored a charter amendment to bring fairness to the selection of volunteer committees, the Green Energy/PACE Initiative, and the Lake Water Quality Awareness program. The town’s elected voices praised Lama for his work. Cid said Lama will be missed and wished him well on his future endeavors. “Every kid dreams of changing the world, Vice Mayor Lama will have the opportunity to do so with his new position at Amazon.com,” Cid said. “Tony is leaving a strong legacy in the

Town of Miami Lakes. His presence on the Council will be sorely missed as he championed many initiatives including the review of the police contract which is the model for the contract cities, Lakes Living app that has enhanced communications with our residents, and the 67th Avenue interchange on the Gratigny, which is a game changer for traffic on that important avenue. “This Council has a very special and unique bond forged through years of working together. His work on the Council comes to an end but his journey as an ambassador of the Miami Lakes brand is just beginning. I wish him and his family all the best in Seattle.” Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez said Lama was more than just a colleague, but a “great friend” he will be missed. “Thank you for the great friendship we have developed over the last five years,” he said. “We wish you great joy as you enter the next chapter of your life. You’ve managed to balance a job that required worldwide travel, your duties as an elected official and most importantly, your family, without missing a beat. Amazon is lucky to have you join their team.” Councilmember Frank Mingo said, “It has been a pleasure to serve with Vice Mayor Lama. I wish him the best on his new venture.”

‘PupPak’ raises awareness for curbing dogs The PupPak, a Lake Patricia neighborhood dog walking group, has been evolving for the past couple of years. Gradually, as new dog owning residents move in, or existing residents become new dog owners, this

dynamic “pak continues to grow. Currently the basic pack consists of five families with others joining on a sporadic basis to form an extended pack of up to 10 families. The dogs cover a

broad range of ages and breeds, including a Chihuahua, Jack Russel, Lab, Shepherd, Vizsla, Labradoodle and spunky mutts. But regardless of their breeds, when they walk together they are all just part of the

same canine family. Not to mention the owners, which although they come from all different walks of life, varied backgrounds and ages, the common thread of being dog owning residents in the Town of Miami Lakes makes dogs and owners alike, a family. And like all families, some ground rules are followed. The first rule is socialization. “All the dogs in the “pakâ€? are friendly to each other since the relationship has been formed, but still all dog owners must be wary of the introductions when new dogs join,â€? said PupPak member, Yolanda Foster. “As the PupPak, we always take precautions when new dogs are introduced. New dogs are always invited to join, but if a new dog is not fully socialized, the pack can react negatively. The new dog knows their place in the group relatively quickly, and the existing dogs usually welcome the new member within a couple walks.â€? The second rule of PupPak is leash usage. Pets are better controlled when wearing a leash. The third and more important rule of PupPak is the unmentionables‌that is, curbing your dog. “As you can imagine, there is plenty to pick up while the pack takes its walks. It is incumbent upon every dog owner to make sure they clean up after their dog. The public areas in our town belong to all of us, including non-pet owners and children who use these areas and deserve

to have them clean, said Foster. Pet waste has been labeled a non-point source pollutant by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), placing it in the same category as herbicides, insecticides, oil, grease, toxic chemicals and acid drainage from abandoned mines. “Some may think that doggy manure is a good fertilizer, but it’s actually toxic to your lawn, causing burns and unsightly discoloring. said Foster. Beyond keeping the lawn looking good is the illness that can crop up. Pet waste contains millions of fecal coliform bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhea, intestinal illness, and serious kidney disorders in humans and has negative effects on drinking water. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), parasites can linger in the soil where infected waste is deposited and is transferable to humans that come in contact with it, whether that’s gardening, playing sports or walking barefoot. “We are very fortunate that the Town of Miami Lakes provides us with a way of remedying this situation in our community by way of Dog Potty stations at most parks, but we must all participate in keeping our areas clean, said Foster. “Every dog owner is responsible for making sure their pet doesn’t create a harmful environment in the areas where we live and play.

FIT Therapy opens in Cypress Village Shop Ctr. By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Erica Massard and Herby Galicia are frequently called “the dynamic duo” for their blended talents. She is an occupational therapist; he is a physical therapist. They’re also husband and wife. The pair opened FIT Therapy in Miami Lakes initially as a mobile physical therapy company and soon thereafter launched the first brick and mortar location in the Cypress Village Shopping Center, at 7401 Miami Lakes Drive. Massard and Galicia’s paths crossed and kept crossing, beginning in high school up until they bumped into each other at a fateful football game while in college where they were each focusing on therapy that would eventually lead them right back to their hometown – Miami Lakes. Born and raised locals, the pair dreamed of opening their own practice for occupational and physical therapy, and so it only made sense to stay close to home. An active couple, Massard and Galicia are well-acquainted with therapy, Massard especially due to her own physical therapy brought on by sport injuries and subsequent knee surgeries in high school. The experience left an impression on her and she pursued occupational therapy with a specialization in hands and upper extremities. “I love health and fitness and I married both, and that’s how I came into physical therapy,”

said Galicia. “I thought it was a great way to stay healthy.” “That I can heal and restore hands is truly my passion,” said Massard. “We communicate with our hands. You can convey love, you can cook a meal, you can do so much and never say a word. I realized how powerful that is which is why I focused on that in my work.” Massard earned her bachelor’s in psychology and master’s degree in occupational therapy from Nova University and Galicia earned his bachelor’s in exercise physiology and master’s in physical therapy from University of Central Florida. Between the two they have over 25 years of experience in the field, having worked with clients and managing clinics in South Florida before opening their doors for FIT Therapy in late 2016. FIT Therapy, which stands for Functional Independence Through Training, and the logo represents making people independent once again through training and restoring function. Some of the services offered are sports rehabilitation, hand therapy, custom made orthosis fabrication, neurological rehabilitation, vestibular therapy, physical reconditioning programs, functional capacity evaluations, workplace modifications, onsite rehabilitative service, pediatrics, kineseotaping, wound case and low level laser therapy. FIT Therapy currently accepts Medicare, Medicaid, Ambetter, Molina, United

Healthcare, NHP, Worker’s Compensation (Medrisk, Align Networks, CorVel, Rockport, Smartcomp, TechHealth), and are always in the process of contracting with more insurance companies for in-network and out-of-network benefits to make sure to reach a wide audience and cater to a diverse clientele. For those whose insurances are not listed, specialized financing plans are offered to meet the needs of all who require physical and occupational therapy. “We tailor treatment based on what a person can and cannot do, so there is a holistic approach,” said Massard. “If you think of an occupation as how you occupy your time from the minute you wake up, what I do is get you back to doing all the things in your day. That could be playing baseball, sewing, playing the piano or even holding a cup of coffee,” said Massard. Beyond offering traditional modalities, Massard and Galicia recognize the need to improve the overall wellbeing of their clients which is why they take a ERICA MASSARD and HERBY GALICIA are owners of FIT body, mind, and spirit approach Therapy in Miami Lakes. to wellness. Musical family raises funds for Alzheimer’s Assn. By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Ileana Merino passed away on Mother’s Day in 2016. Her granddaughter, Jessica Comellas, said it’s just like her Nana to want to make a grand exit. Merino’s life was marked by love for her family and music. Merino, a classically trained

pianist, learned piano under the tutelage of her aunts in Cuba. She graduated from El Conservatorio de Musica de la Habana in 1953 and shortly thereafter began teaching private lessons. In 1973, she opened Ileana Merino Piano Studio in Miami Lakes where she taught and lived for 40 years.

Merino raised up the next generations of her family under a musical rule – all children and grandchildren had to take piano lessons at some in their childhood. Comellas was the only grandchild that stuck with it. “I would sit on her lap while she taught her piano lessons and instead of crying or fussing, I

sat very content in Nana’s arms, said Comellas. “By the time I was three years old, I was able to sit at the piano and play by myself and I’ve been playing ever since. Merino, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2012, passed down her studio to Comellas who had just earned her bachelor’s degree in music. It was renamed Generations Studio, an homage to the musical matriarchal generations that led to its inception. Through the obstacles the family endured while caring for their grandmother, Comellas’ mother, Maria, encouraged all the children and grandchildren to get involved with Walk for Alzheimer’s. However, the Alzheimer’s Association’s event “The Longest Day proved to be a better fit for the family to raise funds while honoring their grandmother’s love of music. “The Longest Day is scheduled to take place on the summer solstice, June 21, which is the longest day of the year with a full 16 hours of sunlight. Comellas, along with her mother and family, began their group for “The Longest Day,

named #baNANApianorama, a practice-a-thon where the piano is played for hours on end while raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. The second event was held just one week after Merino’s passing in the Don Shula’s Hotel lobby and has continued on this year to continue raising funds with no plans to end. This year the family raised $1,000 on site on May 6. “I hope to keep Nana’s spirit alive and make her proud, said Comellas. “Music is the unbreakable bond between us. Music is spending hours and hours at a time trying to memorize Rhapsody in Blue that we played together on two pianos and ending the night dancing and singing in pure delirium. Music is the peace that surrounded her when her spirit was finally free from the disease. Music is my fight to end Alzheimer’s one note at a time. But most importantly, music is Nana and the piano is home. To join the #baNANA pianorama team and donate visit http://act.alz.org/goto/ baNANApianorama.

JUNE 2, 2017 THE MIAMI LAKER

Summary of Town Council’s May meeting actions As part of a settlement agreement to squash a lawsuit, the Miami Lakes Town Council approved a site plan to allow a developer to build four homes in a subdivision to the dismay of residents, conceivably igniting another legal battle. Comar Ventures Corporation’s development plans include building four ranchstyle homes in Loch Ness, 7242 Loch Ness Drive, on four of the five lots the developer purchased in 2015. Last year, council members rejected Comar Ventures’ plans to build five homes, three of them two-story houses, following residents’ claim the proposed development was not consistent with the community’s deed restrictions despite town staff’s approval since it met the town’s code. The company sued Miami Lakes but the two sides reached an agreement over revised plans including one less house, no two-story homes and the development would face two cul-de-

sacs instead of Loch Ness Drive to alleviate any traffic congestion. Comar’s attorney Javier Vazquez told council members his client tweaked his proposal to appease residents and plans to meet with the Architecture Control Committee to review the proposal. Vazquez said his client rejected the group’s version of what the development should resemble. “The HOA offered a revision which was not acceptable,” he said. The Loch Lomond Homeowners Association hired Dr. Steven Bourassa, an urban and regional planning professor at Florida Atlantic University, to argue the residents’ case. He said the proposed homes are too big for the four lots in Loch Lomond, and the boundaries may not line up properly with the rest of the homes, which were built in the 1970s. “The roofs may be overhand, the windows and doors would extend close to the eve, and the

front porches would be too wide,” Bourassa said. “The ranch-style homes may fit other areas in Miami-Dade County, but they don’t fit this neighborhood.” But another lawyer representing Comar Ventures Corporation debunked Bourassa’s credibility since he has no experience in small subdivision or local planning. He said former town planner Brandon Schadd, and current town planner Darby DelSalle scrutinized both development plans and concluded they are compatible with the town’s code. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre, who voted for the proposal, said compatible doesn’t always mean exactly the same. “I don’t think they have to be exactly the same,” he said. “I don’t see it as it makes the proposed project incompatible with everything else. Obviously, if it was a warehouse or a threestory house, I would say, it just doesn’t belong there.” Sensing the residents of Loch Lomond may file a lawsuit to overturn the council’s decision, Mayor Manny Cid offered a motion with the site plan approval, which didn’t sit well with the applicant’s attorneys. Council members narrowly approved Cid’s recommendation that Comar Ventures Corporation must go back before council members for a revised site plan for approval if the court rules the development is not compliant with deed

restrictions. The attorneys for the applicant objected to Cid’s motion but were not allowed to speak since the public hearing was closed. Manny Ribadeo, president of the Loch Ness Homeowners Association, said a petition drive netted 170 signatures from equally bothered neighbors who vehemently rejected the development. “I brought my house with deed restrictions to follow, and the new kid on the block comes in and goes against the fabric of my neighborhood and community,” he said. “It rubs me the wrong way.” In other town business: • Council members gave their final approval for an ordinance to amend the town’s procurement ordinance for a broader participation in the program and clarified the local preference language. The change would make it easier for more businesses to qualify for local preference. • Council members gave their final approval for two separate but related ordinances for the selection a process to pick the next town manager and town attorney. • Council members gave their approval for the Graham Companies’ final plat entitled “TGC Main Street East.” The location of the project is east of Northwest 67 Avenue and north side of Eagle Nest Lane. • Council members gave their approval to a resolution for

the final plat of The Graham Companies’ project to build the Bob Graham office building located west of Oak Lane and south of Governor’s Square Boulevard. • Council members gave their approval to The Graham Companies’ final plat entitled “TGC Lakeside South” located at the southwest corner of Commerce Way and N.W. 82 Avenue. The project includes constructing two one-story warehouse/office buildings, 164 off-street parking spaces and associated improvements on a 5.3 acre site. • Council members denied a resolution to amend a site plan to allow patio walls of the townhouse portion of the Lennar Corporation development called Satori of other materials instead of the code-mandated standard masonry. The development is located at the northwest corner of N.W. 87 Avenue and N.W. 154 Street. • Council members adopted a resolution supporting the development of a Smart Cities strategic roadmap for the planning and the implementation of future Town Smart Cities initiatives. • Council members approved Councilmember Luis Collazo’s proposal to adopt a six month building moratorium and review the town’s current Land Development Code and adopting recommendations with respect to future land use and development in Miami Lakes.

Specialized Investigations opens in Miami Lakes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Three separate entities are housed within the office that overlooks Main Street in Miami Lakes at 6710 Main Street, Suite 900. Despite being little known to the town’s residents, they are behind the scenes doing the work to keep Miami Lakes and areas far beyond safe. Specialized Investigations Solutions was created first by Jay Marin following 13 years on the police force. He launched Specialized Investigations in 2013 and has since expanded to include his wife’s expertise in medicine with Specialized Concierge Nursing. Specialized Investigations offers services in business litigation, undercover surveillance, insurance fraud, identity theft, infidelity investigation, and much more. Robert Santiago, director of Business Development, joined shortly thereafter. “I did 13 years of one type of public security and I saw there was a need for security in the private sector,” said Marin. After expanding Specialized Investigations, Marin teamed up with Steven Rachminov, whom he met after a security detail, to establish Specialized Protection & Security. Rachminov has 18 years of experience in the diamond and jewelry industry before he was recruited into armored transports where he ran two armored transport companies for ten

years. “When I relocated to Miami from New York, I noticed that security down here is lax,” said Rachminov. “We don’t promote the flashlight look, with buttondown shirts and slacks. We have our guards wear tactical looks that work as an actual deterrent.” The two companies work in synchrony from the same office overlooking Miami Lakes through large window panes, the same ones they witnessed a burglary happening at Victoria’s Secret. “It bothers us that we’ve seen Victoria’s Secret get robbed twice. We provided information to the police for cars and license plates but what we want is to be utilized by our community so things like this don’t happen in the first place, where we live, where our kids go to school,” said Marin. “Of the seven burglaries in Miami Lakes that took place in April and those that were apprehended, none were from Miami Lakes,” said Santiago. “We are residents and we want to make our homes safe.” The companies recently did the security detail for President Trump while visiting Florida, and protection for the Chinese Embassy. They will be providing security for the largest jewelry show in Las Vegas and they are currently in the process of opening a location in Las Vegas and another in Manhattan. However, for their headquarters, Miami Lakes is their go-to.

State Farm Homeowners Insurance

Apart from providing security detail for the President, the company has also provided security for Town Mayor Manny Cid. They have supported and sponsored various community events such as Cars for a Cure, The Miami Lakes Bar Association, Relay for Life, and the Our Lady of the Lakes Golf Tournament. They also have plans to host a free women’s self defense class for the town. “We’re not your regular retired cop that does 30 years on the force and decides he wants to become a private investigator as a side job and has no motivation and no business experience,” said Marin. “We are here to provide better quality, better class, and better service.” For every 25 people interviewed for unarmed guards, only one is hired. Armed guards are only hired through word of mouth and come from decades of experience in law enforcement including SWAT teams, ex-military, and special forces. Many of them have worked side by side with Marin and Rachminov on previous details or in the police department. All guards receive physical training for defense tactics and fire arms training. The selective nature of their recruitment process results in satisfied and well-protected clients. All guards are fit and bilingual so they can relay information to clients and police. “Unlike other companies, we are not an 800 number,” said

Rachminov. Part of several associations around the world, the network of security and investigations that the companies offer is widespread. “We are here to provide a full

service for safety and security,” said Marin. For more information visit www.sinvestigations.com and www.specializedprotection. com.

While reshaping the future of the women’s basketball program, St. Thomas University has looked to the past. Candace Walker was named head coach of the Bobcats, returning to her alma mater where she served as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team. Walker previously spent the last four seasons at NCAA Division I Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. “I am thrilled to be a part of the Bobcat family once again,” said Walker, who earned a Master’s Degree in sports administration. “To be able to return to such a prestigious university and to be at the helm of such an established and successful program is truly a blessing. I am beyond excited about what we can accomplish here as a group, both in the classroom and on the court.” Walker thanked Bobcats director of Athletics, Laura Courtley-Todd, for the opportunity to lead the women’s team. “I want to thank her for the opportunity to return and coach Robin Harmony for taking me under her wing, molding me and

CANDACE WALKER preparing me for this opportunity. I look forward to the journey ahead.” Prior to her tenure at Lamer, Walker was an assistant coach at St. Thomas for two seasons under Harmony, who became head coach at Lamar in 2013. “Candace was a tremendous assistant coach,” said Harmony. “The experience she gained at the Division I level will prove to be invaluable. She has grown as a person and as a coach and she is ready to be a head coach. Candace is familiar with St. Thomas, and that knowledge will pay off. I am sorry to lose her as an assistant, but I am happy that she is getting her opportunity to be a head coach.” Walker helped Lamar win a Southland Conference regularseason championship and a berth in the WNIT in 2013-14. Her duties went beyond the basketball court at Lamar, where served as an academic advisor for the team's student-athletes along with coordinating team travel and summer camp programs.

Miami Lakes resident Chris Cabrera holds college choice pending results of MLB draft By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Following a stellar baseball career at Broward Community College and a preceding injury that nearly ended his career, outfielder Chris Cabrera is seeking the next big step of reaching his dream of playing Major League Baseball someday. The Miami Lakes resident is mulling playing for either the University of Maine, Lee University or University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, but he won’t announce his decision until this month’s MLB draft. The son of Art Cabrera, a former high school basketball coaching legend, Chris Cabrera said his father, Broward Community College head coach Ben Bizier and Mater Academy head coach Mike Dirosa, are giving him pointers to improve his skills to compete with top-tier players. “I have the ability to hit but I need to work more on my defense, he said. “I’m getting better at it but I got to play better on defense.

Cabrera, 5-11 and 195 pounds, batted .382, hit three home runs, had 15 doubles and 40 RBI this past season for the Seahawks. He was named to the FCSAA All-State Team and All-Southen Conference Team for his performance in 2017. Cabrera said playing under Bizier made him a better student-athlete. “Coach Bizier was big on academics, he said. “His goal is to make you a better person on and off the field. Cabrera stepped up big for the Seahawks this past season but their match-up with crosstown rival Miami-Dade College perhaps was his best performance. Down 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Alex Carballo led off with a solo home run and Cabrera completed the rally with a three-run homer to help the Seahawks defeat the Sharks, 8-2. Carballo went 4 for 6 and scored twice, and walked, scored a run and finished with four RBI. He also belted another home

After record setting season, FIU’s softball team loses regional to Oklahoma State It wasn’t supposed to end this way for Florida International University’s softball team. After setting school records for most wins, fewest losses and the highest winning percentage (.754) in a single season, the Panthers suffered a devastating 5-0 loss at the hands of Oklahoma State in the NCAA Gainesville Regional. “It was a tough game, said FIU head coach Gator Rebhan. “I think that Oklahoma State had a little more than us today. They played hard; I think we just ran out of gas. Sophomore outfielder Jackie Schoff was the bright spot on offense for the Panthers. She had both Panthers hits, including a leadoff triple in the first inning. Her two hits ended her 207 campaign with a team-leading batting average of .439, five points from the single-season record at FIU. “To our seniors, we have big shoes to fill, said Schoff after the game. “This is one of those seasons where we’ve broken records for the school, and had the most wins at the school. It’s crazy, and to think that we had so many new girls who stepped up, we only have room to grow. We do have a lot to do still.

run, a towering blast over the right center wall off of Sharks starting ace Nelson Alvarez. But if it wasn’t for his perseverance at Mater Academy, Cabrera would’ve never made his mark in junior college baseball. A near career-ending injury during his senior season in high school left his future in doubt after he tore his ACL. He endured six months of rigorous rehabilitation and some college scouts thought he may lose a step or two. But his two college seasons proved otherwise and now he’s seeking to take his talent to an NCAA school. Cabrera said his father, Bizier and Dirosa were his biggest supporters who helped him develop as a good college baseball player. But the prospects of a career in Major League Baseball is unpropitious. “Making it to the pros is very difficult but if it happens down the line then it’s a bonus for him, Bizier said. “If it’s something he set his sights on and go after, than you never know. Though his father doesn’t have a baseball background, Cabrera said he’s been pushing him to play better since he was teenager. Art Cabrera was a longtime basketball head coach for Goleman High School and longtime assistant coach at Miami High, which won multiple state titles in the 1980s and 1990s. Chris Cabrera said his father helped him develop a good work ethic to practice and play hard at all times. “He was tough but he want-

ed me to play hard, he said. “He said there will be a lot of failures but he helped me stay positive all the time. He has been right by my side to encourage me. Cabrera said he would like to play for his hometown team, the Miami Marlins, but won’t mind donning a Chicago Cubs uniform someday. “My father is from Chicago and he took me to a Cubs’ game, he said. “It was awesome.

Arch. McCarthy sinks Goleman’s pursuit of another regional title

Pace High’s Anglers Club rewards students with Deep Sea Fishing Trip

After a stunning defeat of Broward’s American Heritage in the regional quarterfinal, Barbara Goleman’s baseball team was seeking to pull off another upset, this time over the nation’s No. 13 ranked Archbishop McCarthy. The Gators smelled victory but tasted defeat, as the Mavericks (26-2) shut out Goleman, 5-0, to advance to the regional final. The Gators finished the season 19-11 and captured the district championship for the third consecutive season with a victory over division rival Miami Springs. The two teams were hoping to clash again in the postseason, but McCarthy destroyed the Golden Hawks, 15-0, in the regional quarterfinal, while the Gators knocked off the Patriots. The Mavericks kept the Gators scoreless for the second time of the season (Coral Park beat Goleman, 1-0, in April). McCarthy senior Daniel Federman scattered four hits and struck out 10 in nine innings of work. The Mavericks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on four straight hits from the top of the order.

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School seniors Reinaldo Dorta and Albert Carbonell, along with junior Brandon Garcia, went deep sea fishing with the Pace Anglers Club on May 14. The three students were rewarded with the trip for their academic achievements and accompanied by Captain Bouncer Smith, who has been a sponsor and supporter of the Anglers Club since 2004. Smith has taken three students fishing every semester as an incentive to keep them working hard in school.

“We had great weather and a lot of fun,” said Scott Giberson, a Pace science teacher and the moderator for the Pace Anglers Club who also accompanied the students on the trip. Smith took the time to teach the students about the fish and the techniques used to catch them. In total, the group caught two sailfish, three mutton snapper, and three bonita. The Pace Anglers Club will hold its eighth annual Spartan Fishing Tournament on August 19 at La Siesta Resort & Marina in Islamorada, FL. For more information, visit www.paceanglersclub.com.

Hialeah Gardens Middle School’s Maritza Jimenez named District Principal of the Year and new car By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Hialeah Gardens Middle School’s principal Maritza Jimenez waves hello to parents and signs papers handed to her from people that appear out of nowhere as she zooms through the halls of her school and talks at a rapid-fire pace about her win for District Principal of the Year. “I’m honored, but I know it’s not just about me,” she said. “It’s the kids, the parents, the teachers, everyone who helps run this school. They’re the reason why.” A public school veteran, Jimenez began her 21-year-long career in education as a language arts teacher for students with learning disabilities. She earned her specialist degree, a master’s in special education and opened Hialeah Gardens High School as an assistant principal. That, she says, is where ideas started floating in her head about introducing academies to middle school students. Hialeah Gardens Middle School offers eight academies, all of which are continued on in Hialeah Gardens High School, Jimenez’s feeder pattern school, the same school that nominated her for Principal of the Year. The Principal of the Year for

the District was announced at a sit-down dinner held at Parrot Jungle Island in April, and two weeks after the announcement, a white Toyota Corolla from Toyota of Hollywood was driven into Hialeah Gardens Middle School followed by a cavalcade of School Board officials and media. “We run this place like a mini-high school. Our kids are better prepared and focused when they get into high school because they’ve already tried classes in academies and can decide whether they like them or not,” said Jimenez of their academies, among them the one-of-a-kind Agriscience Program which houses a farm on school property. “I just learned one of our cows is pregnant!” Though the programs are one of the school’s strongest draws for students, parents, and apparently Principal of the Year awards, the crux of the school’s strength is its teachers. “We have great programs but without the teachers, who would run them?” said Jimenez. “If I didn’t have an Agriscience teacher willing to put in the effort, or a fire captain, Captain Raymond Austin, teaching our biomedical students, what would it matter what programs we offer?”

BGEC’s Alexa Regalado recognized for perseverance during challenging times Bob Graham Education Center announced that eighth grade student Alexa Regalado was recognized by The State Board of Education and the Commissioner of Education during the State Board of Education Meeting held in May. She was recognized and selected for demonstrating perseverance through challenging times, maintaining an academic focus on meeting educational goals and committing to achieve her personal best. Some of Regalado’s major accomplishments include enrollment in advanced courses for high school credit; active participation in her church and volunteering in community events in coordination with the Elderly Affairs Committee and the Veterans Committee; and competing member of the Civic Engagement Academy and one of the leaders for the winning team for Districts and States. Regalado kept her focus on her volunteering and academics despite suffering the untimely and tragic death of her beloved aunt during Christmas 2013, and the death of her childhood best friend, Breanna Vergara, the following holiday season. Recently Regalado’s grandfather was hospitalized for complications due to a stroke. In the face of these challenges and adversity, Regalado was constant. “She maintains a good, kind spirit and never asks for special treatment. In fact, she goes above and beyond to help others achieve their goals and shine. She’s humble, selfless, and

dependable,” said BGEC principal Yecenia Martinez-Lopez. Regalado’s leadership activities beyond these taxing events include Student Body Secretary for Student Government Association and Student Representative Liaison between student body and PTSA board. She also advocated to establish the Breanna Vergara Foundation to create awareness regarding sudden-cardiac arrest in our youth and assists in planning the annual BV5K and Color Run in Miami Lakes. Regalado lobbied with Senator Rene Garcia, Representative Manny Diaz Jr., and Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. for assistance in passing the Sudden Cardiac Awareness Policy “Breanna Saving Lives Act” and lobbied in Tallahassee this past January for a bill aimed at revising preparticipation physical evaluation form for student athletes (SB-1586). For her aunt, Regalado is developing the Inspire One campaign, as a tribute to her late aunt, aimed at promoting positivity and inspiring others to feel self-confident. And Regalado, along with her family, visits His House Children’s Home during the holiday season and adopts a shelter to offer nutritious meals, gifts, and various needs while affording children their ethnic traditions. “Alexa is to be commended for this tremendous accolade,” said Martinez-Lopez. “Special thanks to her teacher, Jackeline Hernandez, for nominating her.”

The Education Fund sets a record at ‘Love of Art’ charity auction

The Education Fund, based in Miami Lakes, raised a record $215,000 to benefit its programs like the Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials at its sold-out annual charity action, “For the Love of Art,” presented by Ocean Bank on May 10. The event showcased the artistic talents of students and teachers in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Art teachers and students used materials from the Ocean Bank Center, a school supply warehouse, to create each piece up for bid. Money raised goes back to the school where each piece was created. The Children’s Trust, Verizon and the Anthony R. Abraham Family Foundation provided additional major support to make the programming and support for schools possible. The Education Fund also raised money from the auction of luxury vacations, gourmet dinners and adventure experiences. The Education Fund presented its Alumnus of Distinction Award to Miami Heat player Udonis Haslem, for his community service work through the Udonis Haslem Children’s Foundation and his business contributions. “Not only do I get to play basketball for my hometown, but I’m especially proud that I MATER ACADEMY’S Grrlettes Dance and Cheerleading get to give back to the city that Team members display their numerous awards from the first educated me by franchising recent FDCA championships. and operating businesses while

Miami-Dade’s Head Start honors Com. Barbara Jordan The Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department honored County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan during the May 16 County Commission meeting. Deputy Mayor Russell Benford commended Jordan for championing the Head Start program over the course of her 34-year career. Jordan started her career as a teacher for Head Start. “She’s a public servant who believes that hard work and commitment to others is a way of life,” Benford said. “We want to show her our gratitude for her lifetime of work on behalf of our Head Start children and

families.” Jordan also received a proclamation that declared Tuesday, May 16, 2017 as “the Honorable Barbara J. Jordan day in Miami-Dade County.” Jordan was teary-eyed as children from the Head Start program sang the national anthem in unison with the audience and presented her with a bouquet of roses. “Many people think Head Start is a child-care program, but it’s not,” Jordan said. “It’s an educational development program that offers comprehensive services to families. It is the single program that takes families out of poverty.”

schools, careers, and communities. The two were chosen for their stellar academics and involvement in the Pace community. As part of the seminar, Barbier and Casios listened to keynote speakers who talked about serving the community and bettering oneself. They participated in teambuilding ice breakers designed to strengthen the bonds between group members. They also held group discussions with the other students in attendance from across South Florida. In addition, students played in the HOBY Olympics, which featured competitive games such as Office Tennis which used binders and tennis balls, and put on skits to represent what they learned at the seminar. Barbier says that the biggest lesson he learned was that “Everybody comes in all different shapes, sizes, and beliefs. You just have to accept them for who they are.”

Our Lady of the Lakes eighth grade students join in during Shadow Day

THE EIGHTH GRADE CLASS at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School participated in Shadow Day where the students shadow faculty, staff and administration and learn what it’s like to be “in their shoes.” At the end of the day the students had a better understanding of how their mentors function at their jobs and learned to appreciate the work that goes into educating the next generation.

Immaculate Conception Media Team wins national, state honors Last summer the TV media lab at Immaculate Conception Catholic School underwent a complete overhaul with new HD cameras, a TelePrompter for reading the news, and a TriCaster to produce the news. The students took full advantage of their new equipment as they recently were awarded at the state and national level for their achievements in broadcasting the morning announcements to their classmates. With the help of the Christopher Columbus High School’s award-winning Media Team, the Immaculate Conception Media Team received guidance last summer during a media camp that would

not only help them win awards but also prepare them for high school media and beyond. Columbus Media advisor Omar Delgado said, “The middle school in South Florida that has shown time and time again to be hands down the best whether in public or private school is Immaculate. They have state-of-the-art equipment and have a willingness and desire to learn and become great at broadcast journalism.” In April, the Florida Scholastic Press Association awarded Immaculate's WICS Celtic News, as they are known, with six awards including “AllFlorida” for their show opening, “Best of the Best” for Photo

Story, and “Top Middle School News Anchor” for Maximus Ganem. On May 10, the Media Team was awarded at the national level with two national awards by the Journalism Educational Association. These honors included superior broadcast package (feature story) and superior broadcast package (sports story). These are the highest rated awards in each category. The awards and medals were won by Alyssa Barcelo, Catherine Collazo, Enrique de la Osa, and Maximus Ganem. “What these kids have done in the past two years is nothing short of extraordinary,” Father Manny Alvarez, Immaculate Conception's pastor said. “Even before they had the new equipment, they were out last year covering the presidential primary here in Florida and even interviewed Senator Marco Rubio at a local rally. They are naturals in front and behind the camera.” Father Alvarez also praised teacher Tania Busto, the school's media advisor and the help of the Columbus Media Team. “They've won multiple national championships in Media over at Columbus, and we wanted our students to learn from the best,” said Alvarez. “I couldn't be prouder of our kids.”

Goleman’s Kelsy Ruano places second in statewide ethics essay competition Barbara Goleman student Kelsy Ruano was noted for her place as a top ten finalist in the Elie Wiesel Ethics Essay Contest for her essay titled “The Cowardice of Tolerance.” Ruano’s essay dealt with the LGBT community, specifically how those who call themselves allies of the community have a responsibility to uphold. “The whole point of the essay was an ethical dilemma,” said Ruano. “So I wrote about how those who aren’t in the LGBT community have to decide between tolerant or supportive, which are two very different things.” Ruano began her essay with a

Martin Luther King Jr. quote: “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.” The essay contest winners were announced on May 2, and for her placement in the top ten Ruano received a $50 gift card and $200 award. She was the only student that placed in the contest who hails from a traditional high school. Ruano plans on attending University of Florida for a major in Psychology.
