Retiring Police Major Gene Dieppa honored by M. Lakes Town Council The Miami Laker staff During one of the best moments of showing his softer side, Miami Lakes Police Major Gene Dieppa consoled a distraught woman, whose son was involved in a serious car accident. The lady called Mayor Michael Pizzi and told him about the accident and that she needed a copy of the accident report. “I called Major Dieppa and said the lady is very emotional and she needs a copy of the report,” Pizzi said. “I arrived at Town Hall and I see Gene hugging the lady and talking to her. There’s nothing more you can say about his character and the dedication to the Town of Miami Lakes.” Miami Lakes paid tribute to Dieppa, the Town Commander, during last month’s Town Council

meeting, as the 32-year veteran police officer is calling it a career. Councilmembers and town staff honored Dieppa with a proclamation for his hard work and dedication to his hometown, where he was promoted to Town Commander in 2013 to lead the 42-member detached police unit from MiamiDade. Lawmakers said Dieppa set the best example of community policing and he did a great job in keeping the crime rate low, while bringing the entire town together. “He’s right in the middle of things, including making sure traffic doesn’t have a major impact on the town, and he does it because he loves being a police officer,” Pizzi said at the meeting. “He bleeds Miami Lakes and he loves his officers and he’s a great neigh-

Long delayed Youth Center scheduled to open in time for back to school in September By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The new Miami Lakes youth center, which has been under construction and delayed for more than two years due to problems with the original contractors, should be finished in September and in time for the new school year, said Town Manager Alex Rey. At the June 2 regular Town Council meeting, Rey mentioned the grand opening month for the facility when councilmembers were discussing a zoning issue, which now allows South Florida School of Excellence to establish a 24,373 square feet private school in an industrial area for 200 kids with special needs. The school, which is set to open in August, is located at 15900 N.W. 57 Avenue. Lawmakers also eliminated a requirement that 75,000 square feet for recreational use to be applied to the site plans, which

was reduced to zero. But school officials said they are required to safely transport all students to some of the town’s parks or open spaces for recreational activities. Rey said the new youth center with a tot-lot is the closest facility, which is nestled inside Picnic Park East near Miami Lakes Drive and N.W. 60 Avenue. He said arrangements can be made with School of Excellence officials to allow the students to participate in recreation activities from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. After school programs and other recreational programs at the youth center start at 3 p.m. “The school is less than a mile away from the youth center, which is set to open in September of this year,” Rey said. “We can reach an agreement for maximum use of the facility with financial compensation for the town. It can be a win, win scenario.”

bor. We all consider him our best friend.” Dieppa said he must retire because he’s enrolled into the Deferred Retirement Option Program or DROP, to make him eligible for the Florida Retirement System Pension Plan. It’s the same plan that forced then-Town Manager Frank Bocanegra, who previously served as the Town Commander, to resign from government work. “Had it not been for DROP, I would still be here serving this great community,” Dieppa said. Dieppa depicted working in Miami Lakes as a humbling experience. “This has been a great town to work with, the citizens, business

Giardino Gourmet Foods celebrates first year anniversary at Park Centre By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Giardino Gourmet Foods first moved into Park Centre Shops at 8008 N.W. 154 Street in Miami Lakes one year ago. The decision to open in Miami Lakes was one that proved to be fruitful for owners Lilly Tudela, Jaime Mitrani and Robert Furth. “It has been awesome,” said Tudela. “We have had record breaking sales for the franchise since the first month we opened. We have been busy serving the community and have gotten involved with catering for the town. It’s been a lot of work but it’s worth it.” Tudela, Mitrani and Furth have participated in the Weight Loss Challenge for the town, Relay for Life, and Taste of Miami Lakes. Giardino Gourmet Salads has added to the town’s healthy options for dining. “You can really feel the sense of community,” said Tudela. “There are so many regulars, local workers and residents that we see often, which is a great testament to that town feeling. The biggest feedback we’ve received is that there is nothing too similar to us as far as our menu so I do believe we are meeting a need for healthy food in the area.” Customers can build salads, or choose from a lengthy list of menu items including soups, sandwiches, grain bowls and wraps. Tudela’s personal favorite is the Mama Mia with tropical chicken

Following the success of the Miami Lakes store, the co-owners purchased an existing store in Kendall to continue expanding. “With us starting here in Miami Lakes, the sky is the limit. We hope to continue growing,” said Tudela. As part of efforts to expand, the Miami Lakes location has promised online ordering which should launch by the end of the year. To celebrate their first anniversary, Tudela, Mitrani and Furth are holding a customer appreciation week with daily specials from June 22 to 26. Summary of Council actions at June 2 meeting By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Tension between Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi and Councilmembers came to light at their regular meeting on June 2, where lawmakers insisted they each follow the three-minute rule for discussion and debate for each agenda issue to keep the session moving along gracefully. But Pizzi, who has a penchant for speaking so long that some council meetings have not ended until midnight, took exception to the rule and said he won’t be silenced while expressing his points for the people who elected him to political office. The June Council meeting was the first Pizzi chaired since he was reinstated as mayor following his acquittal on public corruption charges last year. The drama unfolded when

Councilmember Ceasar Mestre suggested the entire council stay in compliance with the three-minute rule for discussion, which the town adopted from Robert’s Rules of Order that governs how meetings are run. “Since the town has a long agenda tonight, including two public hearings, I would like to make sure we continue talking on time and abide by the rule which limits discussion, Mestre said. Pizzi objected, saying as chair of the Town Council, he won’t limit lawmakers and residents’ dialogues if they are making intelligent comments and reasonable points. “Anyone making a point and is not finished and needs a little more time, I will not silence them, Pizzi said. “I am not going to be silenced in expressing my opinions, and I also will never unrea-

sonably limit the right of any elected official representing the people to make a point that they believe is important. Councilmember Frank Mingo made a motion to appeal the mayor’s decision, saying the council must follow the rules. “The rules are clear, it’s in our Rules and Regulations, Mingo said. “We have to abide by it and you don’t have the right, by yourself, to make that decision. The Council approved Mingo’s motion on a 6-1 vote, with Pizzi the sole dissenting voice. Pizzi said enforcing the threeminute rule was pre-orchestrated by Council members to limit his discussions. “Unfortunately, this is how we are starting off, he said. “I pledged to work with everyone up here and we are starting off with a measure to make sure I and others are limited in speaking. Mestre intervened, saying the three-minute rule was not a personal attack on the mayor. “We have a rule to follow and we want to make sure it applies to everyone, Mestre said. “If you don’t like the rule, then we can change it. Nobody’s here to silence you or silence anyone else. Pizzi said limiting discussion could have a downside for Miami Lakes. He said the town may want to know about safety issues and someone needs 25 minutes to discuss measures on preventing kids from drowning, as well as pubic safety and fire protection and economic issues.

“I don’t want an economic crisis because we limited someone who has knowledge to three minutes because we didn’t want to sit here for another three minutes listening,â€? he said. Mingo accused Pizzi of grandstanding instead of acknowledging the fact lawmakers must follow the rules. Pizzi said his comments were inappropriate and ruled him out of order. “Rules are in place, is it too much to ask that we follow the rules?â€? Mingo asked. “Rules are in place to keep the meetings going quickly and getting the people’s business done quickly.â€? Following a brief recess, a contrite Pizzi said he believes the council was not conspiring against him. “I think everybody is here in good faith,â€? Pizzi said. “It’s my goal that we can all work together as colleagues and friends and do good things together.â€? In other Town Council news: • Miami-Dade Fire Chief Sam Downey said the new Miami Lakes West Station 64 on N.W. 154 Street and 77 Avenue is expected to be ready and open sometime this year with a grand opening celebration and a tour for residents and council members. Council members are shooting for July. Downey also presented a report on the status of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, which included adding advance life support for heart attack patients and stroke treatments, adding 30 new fire and rescue trucks, and adding 100 fire-

fighters by the end of 2015. He said the county is graded by how fast the units can respond to emergencies. In 2014, the two fire stations in Miami Lakes were able to respond to life-threatening calls faster than the county-wide average. The response time in Miami Lakes was six minutes, 15 seconds, while the county-wide average was seven minutes, eight seconds. For fires, the county average response time was 6 minutes, 15 seconds, while Miami Lakes was six minutes, 18 seconds. • Lawmakers gave their final approval for an ordinance delegating the authority to reduce civil penalty reductions to the town's special master. The new ordinance doesn’t include residents who failed to take advantage of the town’s amnesty period to bring the code violations in compliance.

Italian manufacturers MBM open Main Street office By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Three high end Italian manufacturers well known and respected in Europe and across the globe, Margraf, Barausse, and Milldue, collaborated on the opening of a satellite office called MBM, the first independent office of its kind apart from distributors, in the heart of Miami Lakes. Mark Conn, managing agent for the one-of-a-kind location tucked away at 6840 Main Street that is scheduled to open in June, has worked in the marble industry for 20 years. After retiring from the industry and pursuing his passion for ministry work as an ordained pastor, Margraf reached out to Conn to once again be a part of the industry he was so familiar with years ago. “After they reached out to me, I prayed about it. They made an offer. I said ‘thank you Lord’ and took the offer,” chuckled Conn. When deciding what location would be best for this satellite

office, Conn suggested Miami Lakes instead of the design district, having some familiarity with the area since he grew up in Opa Locka. “The manufacturers wanted to be in Miami and wanted a Miami zip code but I was opposed to opening an office in the design district because of the congestion,” said Mark. “Being in Miami Lakes is a nice and welcoming area for high end clients and we were fortunate enough to find this office on Main Street.” Margraf manufactures high end marble products including countertops, tiles, one-of-a-kind creations as well as high end, high quantity production. Margraf has been in business since 1906 and was started by the Morzoto family whose descendants still sit on the board of the company to this day under the direction of CEO Silvio Xompero. Barausse manufactures high end doors and has been family owned and operated for nearly 50

years. Milldue manufactures high end bathrooms and has been family owned and operated for 40 years. Margraf, Barausse, and Milldue are each individual companies whose craftsmanship is 100 percent Italian-made. The companies’ specialties are high-rise projects and providing high end interior furnishings for the project market. MBM is a small gem in Miami Lakes for developers, architects, and designers to work on commercial projects. Currently, the office is creating a residential division to specialize in custom made items for homes as well. MBM has projects in Miami and distributors in Florida and nationwide.

Conn is enjoying the ability to return to the industry he retired from while simultaneously running his nondenominational church, The Connection Church which will also make a home in Miami Lakes from its current space in Pembroke Pines. “This opportunity that I have to open this business in the states is a blessing,” said Conn. “I’m very thankful, fortunate and humbled that they would entrust me to do this and they have really treated me like family, having been very generous and considerate with me.” For more information contact the MBM office at 305-333-0391.

What’s On Your Mind opens Learning Center in M. Lakes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Dr. Fabian Redler, owner of What’s On Your Mind Psychology and Learning Centers Inc., has designated Miami Lakes as the location for his business’ headquarters, at 14400 N.W. 77 Ct. Suite #105. The center is a diagnostic, treatment and learning center that combines neuropsychology and educational therapies for student success. “I love Miami Lakes,” said Redler. “I grew up in Miami but had friends in the area. I also love that the population fits with my own background which is primarily young professional hispanics.” Redler opened the learning center 15 years ago after finding the manner by which students and their parents were directed after being evaluated for learning disabilities was frustrating. “At the end of an evaluation, parents would spend so much money and would want to know ‘where do we go from here’ and there really wasn’t any place for them to go other than teaching in a way that would support their own learning style. This led me to finding a way to figuring out where that child is cognitively weak and building those underlying processing skills,” said Redler. Redler, together with a team of psychologists, and trained instructors, make up What’s On Your Mind Psychology and Learning Centers. Students are diagnosed by the psychologists and then are given a custom program that caters to their needs. “We are a center that specializes in working with students that have learning disabilities,” said

Major G. Dieppa honored by town (Continued from Page 1) owners and everybody else here have been great,” said Dieppa. “In my 32 years in law enforcement, I have worked for most of the county’s jurisdictions, but Miami Lakes is by far the best city that I have worked with.” Dieppa’s career began at the State Attorney’s Office. He later became an officer with the Miami-Dade Police Department and has advanced through the ranks, serving as investigator, detective, sergeant, lieutenant and now major. During his leadership tenure in Miami Lakes, the Police Department has experienced many advancements, an increase in the number of police officers, developed enhanced initiatives to address burglaries and thefts throughout the town, increased training and preparedness, and improved relationships within the town’s communities.

THE MIAMI LAKER

Town’s budget planning may require News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes contingencies for Pizzi’s legal fees By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff As Miami Lakes is preparing the town’s budget for the 20152016 fiscal year, town officials were put on notice that Mayor Michael Pizzi’s attorneys have requested payment for their court costs for four cases, three of which that ultimately returned him to political office following his arrest on public corruption charges. According to Town Attorney Raul Gastesi, the mayor’s team of lawyers filed motions for Miami Lakes to pay their legal fees for their services during his criminal trial, Supreme Court and Circuit Court lawsuits and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals case, which ruled he’s the town’s rightful mayor. The problem for the town, however, is that his attorneys have yet to disclose the amount at a time when council members are set to approve a property tax rate in July for next year’s budget. Gastesi said Pizzi’s attorneys, including Ed Shohat and Ben Kuehne, filed an affidavit in

March indicating the town is entitled to pay his legal bills for the Supreme Court lawsuit, which forced Governor Rick Scott to lift his suspension, the Circuit Court trial and the Appeals Court. In late May, the attorneys filed another motion asking Miami Lakes for reimbursement for Pizzi’s criminal trial, which lasted for three months in 2014. But Gastesi said the lawyers never submitted the figures to determine the estimated costs for the court cases after he requested the total amount. “I don’t know when they will submit the fees,” Gastesi said at the June 2 regular Town Council meeting, where he presented the latest report on the attorney’s fees. Pizzi left the dais during the report citing a conflict of interest, which left council members puzzled over the amount of the court fees during budget season. “I respectfully ask the mayor to tell his attorneys as soon as possible what the amount is,” said Councilmember Frank Mingo. “I am not saying we are going to be

giving him this money but at least we will know what the amount is especially since budget season is coming along so we can plan for any contingencies.” Gastesi said he had to be terse with his answers and comments because the issue needs to be discussed in private during an executive session. “It’s not an admission that we are liable for these fees,” Gastesi said. Without any figures for the attorney’s fees, Miami Lakes’ proposed budget for next year hangs in the balance. Town Manager Alex Rey said lawmakers will tentatively adopt a rate for property taxes next month, and his staff is working on the general fund to craft out a budget. “If we are liable to pay for attorney’s fees, then we have to figure out what to assume for that,” Rey said. If Miami Lakes is forced to pay the mayor’s legal bills, it could impact the town’s budget, conceivably placing some projects on hold for next year.

M-Dade Com. Barbara Jordan holds community meeting for Northwest M-Dade residents By Miami Laker staff Solid Waste and public works were the top concerns for a group of Northwest Miami-Dade residents during a community meeting, where county officials were on hand to listen and offer solutions to their problems. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan called the meeting, which was held last month at Joella C. Good Elementary School. On a brighter note, the residents commended the county’s fire and police departments for a job well done. One by one, residents flocked to the podium and expressed concerns over Solid Waste, public works and other utility-related services the county renders to their areas. But they praised Miami-Dade

Fire Rescue and the Police departments. “Forums such as these allow me to gauge the effectiveness of Miami-Dade County,” said Jordan. “After hearing compliments and complaints, I am able to draft legislation that enhances and strengthens the quality of life for people in District 1.” Also on hand to address issues raised by residents were representatives from the Mayor’s Office and the departments of Water and Sewer, Transit, Regulatory and Economic Resources, Waste Management, Parks and Recreation, Fire Rescue, and Police. Miami Ocean Studios Chairman Rodolfo Paiz delivered a presentation regarding the upcoming film studio slated to open on a portion of the Landmark property.

Pace High’s Class of 2015 celebrates graduation and Baccalaureate Mass By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker With their last high school exam finished, Pace High School’s Class of 2015 seniors began their final week as Spartans with the traditional Baccalaureate Mass held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Sunday, May 17. Pace president Reverend Paul Vuturo celebrated the mass along with the recently ordained Father Bryan Garcia, a Pace Class of 2006 alumnus. Following the homily, each senior was presented with a baccalaureate medal by Reverend Vuturo and principal Ana Garcia. Members of the Class of 2015 brought up offertory gifts such as a school trophy, an iPad, a football, and a cross to the altar to symbolize their time spent at Pace. As Reverend Paul and Father Bryan processed out, the choir sang the seniors’ class song “I’ll Be There For You.” Graduates then watched a slideshow with photos from their four years at Pace. Senior Gabriel Sanchez ended the event by giving the

Class of 2015’s Farewell Address, thanking the faculty, staff, and parents and reminiscing with his fellow classmates of their years as Spartans. Finally, on Friday May 22, the seniors, their families, and the Pace faculty and staff attended the 52 Annual Commencement Exercise at Miami-Dade County Auditorium. During her Principal’s Address, Ana Garcia announced that the Class of 2015 had earned over $5 million in scholarships, worked a total of 27,511 community service hours, and been accepted to universities such as Duke University, University of Florida, Florida State University, the Savannah College of Art & Design, Boston College, and the University of Miami, among others. “Your four years of high school are done, but I hope the lessons

you’ve learned stay with you forever,” said Garcia in her address. Student Body president Brianna Martinez delivered the senior address by speaking almost entirely in rhyme about their high school journey and how they became a diverse and unified Pace family. “Where ever our paths shall lead us, may we continue to be the individuals who stand out, because only those who do, change the world,” said Martinez, before concluding her speech like she ended every school day over the PA – with a school-wide prayer. After receiving their degrees and gathering outside, the Class of 2015 threw their graduation caps into the air in unison, celebrating the culmination of their high school careers and the endless possibilities that await them in college and beyond.

Bobcats baseball team nearly wins NAIA title By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff St. Thomas University’s baseball team was just three innings away from winning the AVISTANAIA College World Series, but Lewis-Clark College rallied to take the national championship with a 10-7 victory in their own backyard. But the No. 9 ranked Bobcats came a long way, traveling 2,814 miles to Lewiston, Idaho, to reach the 59th annual college baseball postseason classic, where they defeated the top two teams. After dropping its opening game to No. 9 seed Concordia, St. Thomas University staved off elimination four times. The Bobcats defeated Davenport, 8-3, and Vanguard, 1410, to set up a showdown with No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Baptist. St. Thomas defeated the top team, 5-4, behind solid pitching and good base running, and then

put away No. 2 Faulkner Alabama, 6-3, in the semifinal game. St. Thomas was on the brink of finishing its Cinderella season, leading 7-1 in the fourth inning, but the Bobcats blew a 7-4 leading in the eighth inning. They were six outs away from the national championship but Lewis-Clark spoiled their happy ending. Bobcats’ head coach Jorge Perez and his baseball team put together an exceptional campaign in 2015. Ranked 20th in the nation, St. Thomas was the runner-up in the Sun Conference Championship, which earned the Bobcats a berth in the NAIA National Championship opening round. It marked the seventh appearance all-time for the Bobcats at the national tournament; they last appeared in 2012.

Congratulations Dancers on another beautiful recital

We are so proud of what you have accomplished on and off the stage!

USA Fit Miami runners take part in ‘We Stand With Boston 5K/10K’ In late April, USA Fit Miami participated in the “We Stand With Boston 5K/10K/Half” virtual race, which began and ended at Miami Lakes Park West, in an effort to stand united and fearless in the face of the devastating events that took place at the Boston Marathon in 2013. After 10 years of transforming and embracing the marathoning community in Miami, USA Fit Miami wanted the opportunity to give back to the sport that had given its runners and walkers so much. Katrina Knight-Vera, head organizer of USA Fit Miami, brought an amazing group together to support the event and spread the awareness that marathoners never stand alone. In their off season, before their program kicks off on August 15, the organizer, coaches, and members of USA Fit Miami demonstrated the resiliency and the kindness that exists in the marathon community. “The Boston Marathon is the Holy Grail of marathon races,” said Knight-Vera. “It’s like the Super Bowl or the World Cup the whole world knows about this race, so when tragedy struck, we all felt it. “I am so proud of USA Fit Miami and my running community. The way we all came together immediately after the bombing, and now two years later, is indicative of the spirit of the marathon and of this community.”

Barbara Goleman Senior High graduates first Capstone class By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The “amazing graduating class of 2015” is what Barbara Goleman Senior High School principal Joaquin Hernandez calls the latest graduating class. Hernandez and the rest of the school administration and faculty are celebrating the achievements of the class of 2015 which also includes the first graduating Capstone class. Goleman’s class of 2015 totaled 483 graduates. Of those, 158 earned 2,160 college credit hours and the entire class amassed over 67,000 hours of community service. A total of $3.3 million in scholarships were earned. Additionally, this graduating class saw six times more 6.0 GPA’s than any other year in the school’s history. “When I first met the students

as incoming freshmen, I knew there was something special about this class. They were so academically inclined, so focused on their future, that honestly, looking back at that it seems to me it was inevitable that they would succeed,” said Hernandez. The graduating Capstone students first entered the inaugural program their sophomore year and some have completed enough credits to enter college with a junior status. The school also had two Posse Scholars and are sending graduates to top schools this fall. Among the schools students are attending is University of Florida, where former high school gators from Goleman are proudly continuing their reign as college gators. “Those students are moving from our swamps to theirs,” said Hernandez.

Intensity Dancers’ Studio celebrates three long time student graduates By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Kandis Terry, Katie Camero, and Katherine Merino are long time friends, Miami Lakes residents, and graduating dancers at Intensity Dancer’s Studio in Miami Lakes. All three girls have been attending dance class since second grade, five to six times a week until their graduation this

June. Terry and Camero graduated from New World School of the Arts and Merino from Archbishop McCarthy. Terry will be pursuing dance at the University of Michigan. Camero will be studying journalism at Boston University and Merino will be studying engineering at the University of Central Florida.

Each earned scholarships for their academic successes and as for their talent, Marisa Bidegaray, instructor at Intensity Dancer’s Studio speaks only praises for the trio. “We are going to miss them so much,” said Bidegaray. “We’ve seen them grow up from little girls to talented women. We wish them all the best.”

Pace High’s Gallery Art Show continues to grow in third year By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker This past May, nearly 100 family, friends, alumni, and fellow students gathered at Monsignor Edward Pace High School to admire artwork from Pace students and alumni at the 2015 Pace Gallery Art Show. Marcel Navarro, lead teacher for the Academy of Visual Arts, organized the show, which featured works from Pace alumni, “Academy” students, and students from the school’s many art classes. This year’s show had both its biggest turn out yet and the most students ever represented. A total of 50 pieces from 15 students and two Pace alumni were on display. This year, Navarro increased student involvement by allowing them to pick their best work from their portfolios to display. Students were made more responsible by not only deciding which pieces they would showcase, but also by hanging up and organizing the pieces on the show walls themselves. Navarro insists that it’s the students who put the work in. “Students felt like they were part of the show last year, but this year they felt like they were the show,” said Navarro. He hopes to expand further by reaching out to Pace faculty to show off their work and even moving to a new on-campus venue to accommodate the show’s growing size.

setting a high standard for others. Students have become the center of Miami-Dade’s program design and activity choices. The curriculum focuses on innovative activities, wellness centers, and a robust water sports program where students want to continue participation. According to the study, 61 percent of students passed five out of six of the measures outlined on the FITNESSGRAM. Students developed inclusiveness and collegiality among their peers, and positive changes in nutrition and attitudes toward activity were observed to have been transferred to the home environment. Data contained in a national survey shows that, among the national franchise brands, RE/MAX had the highest per-agent home sales in 2014. The REAL Trends 500 survey reports that sales associates at RE/MAX brokerages averaged 16.6 transactions last year.
