Gov. Scott vetoes two major Miami Lakes Capital Improvement projects By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Florida Governor Rick Scott vetoed $461 million earmarked for special projects in the state’s $78.6 billion budget, among them two of Miami Lakes’ capital improvement projects after two lawmakers secured funding to enhance the quality of life of residents living in the 6.5 square-mile municipality. State Representatives Manny Diaz Jr. (R-Miami Lakes) and Jose Oliva (R-Miami Lakes) initially squeezed $11 million in the state’s tight budget for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, but Scott denied $800,000 of the funding for Miami Lakes’ Canal Stabilization Project Phase Two ($500,000) and Miami Lakes’ West Lakes drainage improvements called Phase B ($300,000). Scott, however, allowed $300,000 the two lawmakers requested for drainage enhancements for Miami Lakes’ Lake

Lake Sarah Drainage project only one approved for M. Lakes (Continued from Page 1) private property, and the West Lakes drainage improvements project was aimed at overhauling and retrofitting the drainage system to reduce flooding and property damage to nearly 3,000 residents in the southwestern portion of the town. With Scott allowing the funding for the Lake Sarah Drainage improvements, the town will use the $300,000 to prevent structural damage to private property by increasing storm water management capacity and eliminate flooding in the southeastern portion of the town. The funding for all three projects had been considered a serious priority by Miami Lakes residents and Town Council members Frank Mingo, Tony Lama, Nelson Rodriguez, Tim Daubert, Ceasar Mestre and Vice Mayor Manny Cid. During the regular Legislative Session, council members trav-

eled to Tallahassee for MiamiDade Days and lobbied the state lawmakers for the funding for the capital improvement projects. Diaz said he was disappointed the governor vetoed the projects for Miami Lakes. “It is unfortunate that the Miami Lakes drainage and canal projects were included in the governor’s vetoes,” he said. " I look forward to continuing to fight for dollars for infrastructure that improves the quality of life for our community as we have done for the last there years. We will back on it in September.” Cid said though he respects the governor’s line item veto authority, he wholeheartedly disagrees with his decision to veto the two Miami Lakes projects. “The two projects vetoed are NOT budget turkeys, they are vital infrastructure improvements championed by our Miami Lakes legislative delegation,” Cid said.

100 Montaditos prepares for Main Street opening By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff “Spain is closer than you think reads the 100 Montaditos website, and for the residents and visitors of Miami Lakes, the phrase rings true now that the Spanish cuisine restaurant at 6803 Main Street will open in early July. During the first opening week the store will offer one free montadito per person, from a selected menu. For updates follow 100 Montaditos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Hours for the store are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Wednesdays and weekends are from 11 a.m. to midnight. A montadito, famous in Spain, is a tapa-sized roll of bread with quality ingredients, many of which are directly imported from Spain, mounted on top such as meats, cheeses, sauces, fresh tomatoes and more. In addition to the 100 montadito options at the aptly named “100 Montaditos there are also salads, fries, meat and cheese

platters, appetizers and desserts. Ignacio Garcia, managing director of 100 Montaditos and David Gallardo, director of Marketing, Communication and Operations in the United States, were both pleased to find a location that fit the needs of the 100 Montaditos franchise. “Miami Lakes meets all the requirements for us, said Garcia. “There is great visibility, a beautiful outdoor shopping area and a good community to set up 100 Montaditos. The new Miami Lakes location is the first U.S. location to open with a redesigned menu that has updated the original options with more ingredients and the introduction Spanish desserts such as Tarta de Santiago, churros, and Crema Catalana. Additionally, beverage options include soft drinks, Sangria and an assortment of new beer options including Budweiser, Yeungling, Samuel Adams, Corona and Alhambra. The Miami Lakes location also offers catering

and plans to open online ordering at a later date. A discount deal occurs every Wednesday, which features select montaditos for only $1, and every Sunday which offers the second order platter at half price. The store’s best selling montadito, #81, topped with serrano ham, mozzarella, tomato, and pesto may find some competition with the store’s newly added “Mighty Montaditos which are twice the size of regular montaditos. The Miami Lakes location is one of four locations in South Florida, including Midtown, West Kendall, and Brickell. 100 Montaditos is also located in New York, Washington, Tampa, Colombia, Chile, Guatemala and Mexico in addition to it’s origins in Spain, over 350 locations in total. ing at a local retail store and over the course of eight years, worked her way up from sales associate to managing and buying for the store. She later became a buyer for an exclusive travel retailer group and oversaw luxury departments such as Ray Ban, Michael Kors, Prada, and Coach among others. After spending time managing for others and earning her degree in marketing, Diaz decided to pursue a lifelong dream – to open her own boutique. When it came time to decide on a location, Diaz quickly thought of home. “I’m familiar with the area, with the people and I love the community,” said Diaz. “The opportunity came up for this location and we thought it was perfect.” With a location scouted and a long awaited eagerness, FH Fashion House was born and opened in May. Diaz quickly went to work cultivating unique and farreaching style options for anyone who may step foot inside her store. “I have learned while in this business that you can’t always shop for yourself,” said Diaz. “Of course, my style comes through in the selection offered, but I try to provide options, things that a variety of people want. I often see mothers and daughters both leave with something they want.” Diaz integrates customer feedback into her selections, and will soon be offering a swimsuit line at the suggestion of a client who was searching for a specific piece.

Elementary students learn how to prepare their pets for hurricane season Just prior to the beginning of hurricane season, a new pet responsibility lesson that includes a video offering pet care tips during natural disasters became part of the curriculum for fourth and fifth graders in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). The video is the second collaboration between Miami-Dade County Animal Services and MDCPS. The lesson plan focuses on the importance of having a family preparation plan for an emergency that includes keeping family pets safe. “Teaching students the importance of appropriate pet care means that we are also teaching

them the essential life lesson of responsibility,” said Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “We welcome the opportunity to work with MiamiDade County Animal Services to provide training and information to our students that demonstrate the appropriate ways to care for our pets and animals.” “We are very pleased to once again work with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to help reach so many children about the importance of pet care and responsibility,” said Alex Muñoz, Director of Miami-Dade Animal Services.

Dick Poczciwinski, 82, a basketball star in play at Shula’s Athletic Club By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Dick Poczciwinski is a nimble basketball player with a trademark jump shot that’s lethal. At Shula’s Athletic Club in Miami Lakes, he pushes the ball down the court with cartoon-like speed, and either passes the ball to one of his teammates or scores with the jump shot or a lay-up. Sometimes, he’s the leading scorer on his pick-up team, averaging in double figures, and plays good defense. In one game, he held an opposing player to one of the worst shooting performances of his career. “I was holding the best shooter and he had a bad night. He wanted to take a swing at me,” Poczciwinski quipped. Every Saturday morning, Poczciwinski plays basketball at a

high and intense level at the Athletic Club, and he is 82-yearsold. Despite his age, Poczciwinski has been recognized by his teammates and opposing players as a good player, leaving them baffled over a man nearly a century year old who can play on the same level as younger players, while men his age live with the day-to-day difficulties of moving their bodies. “It’s simple, I am a fierce competitor,” the Kendall resident said. “I have been playing basketball since I was a kid and never stopped playing at a high level. My motto is once you start something, you can never go back. In other words, never give up.” Poczciwinski, a retired rental car consultant, is in good shape and he still has the competitive drive that earned him the distinc-

DepositAccounts rates credit unions annually based on evaluations of the financial health which are graded on a number of factors.

tion as an all-around athlete. Since competing, he has won 40 medals, gold and silver, in basketball, tennis, racquet ball, softball, golf and swimming. And he continues to play all six sports at 82. Jim Hamilton, who plays basketball with Poczciwinski on Saturdays at the Athletic Club, said his jump shots are “lethal.” Hamilton said he shot five-forfive from the field in one game while playing with guys in their 20s and 30s. “It was lights out,” he said. Hamilton calls him the dean of basketball. “He is a very competitive person and you can see it in his eyes. He really enjoys traveling from Kendall and enjoying playing with younger guys. He’s playing a game he loves,” Hamilton said. Hamilton, 70, said he first met Poczciwinski at Shula’s Athletic adult basketball league, which was founded by himself and Miami Lakes resident Dave Oliver. “Most pro athletes, when they get older, can run and up down the court but not at their younger pace,” Hamilton said. “Dick can run up and down the court and keep up with guys in their 20s and 30s. It’s remarkable and he’s an inspiration to all of us that we can play basketball that long.”

Team Mooo raises $4,200 for Lakes Relay for Life Miami Lakes’ Team Mooo was recognized as the second highest fund-raisers for this year’s American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event, raising $4,200 to help the voluntary health organization find a cure for the deadly disease.

The group of high-school students were honored by Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Miami Lakes for their fundraising efforts. Team Mooo raised the money with car washing events and the group enjoyed success at an event at Menchies in Miami Lakes,

where they helped sell ice cream and frozen yogurt, and 20 percent of the sales went to the group for their efforts. The group is already planning fund-raisers for next year’s Relay for Life event and looking for other teenagers to join them.

“This is very important because cancer strikes every single family, every single day,” said team member Christina Franco. “We must find a cure for this disease.” Team Mooo was formed after team member Michael Barcelo was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 3, and his friends helped raise money to find a cure for people who were stricken with cancer. Throughout the years, the same group of students, who are now in high-school, are still collecting

money for the worthy cause and participating in the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Miami Lakes. Michael is now 15 years-old. But for the first time, the group did the fundraisers on their own this year. In the previous years, their parents helped them with their activities. Students wishing to join the group can call 786-709-7888.

Sen. Marco Rubio joins in town’s efforts for independent Zip Code By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes’ efforts to have its own independent zip code piqued the interest of U.S. Senator and Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio. According to a missive dated June 17, 2015 that Rubio wrote to U.S. Postmaster General Megan Brennan, the senator is pressing the Washington D.C.-based office to come to a decision on Miami Lakes’ appeal for a zip code after the town’s request was denied earlier this year. In March, the USPS informed Miami Lakes that the town’s FOIA request had been denied because “such records” would fall under the FOIA exemption, a federal law

which applies to information that is exempt from disclosure under another federal statue. Information of a commercial nature, including trade secrets, whether or not obtained from a person outside the postal service, which under good business practice would not be publicly disclosed. Rubio’s letter said, in part, “I am writing to follow-up on a Freedom of Information Act request that was made by the city of Miami Lakes on December 19, 2014 seeking information on their prior request for a zip code boundary change and subsequent denial,” Rubio wrote in the letter. “In response to their FOIA denial, Miami Lakes sent an appeal request on April 10 to the Chief

The addition of American’s Key Club brings the total of sponsored leadership programs in area high schools to a total of seven. Key Clubs are present at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, Miami Lakes Educational Center, Mater Lakes Academy, Hialeah Gardens Senior High, Jose Marti MAST Academy, and Barbara Goleman Senior High. Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, called Key Club members, build themselves as they build their schools and communities. Key Club has approximately 260,000 members in approximately 5,000 clubs and is represented in 31 countries. Formed in 1939, Florida was the first district in Key Club. A noteworthy former Key Club member is Senator Bob Graham. This year the Lieutenant Governor elected for Division 25A (Miami Lakes and Hialeah areas) is Sabrina Cerquera attending Miami Lakes Educational

Center High School. Her division currently has 14 clubs in it and she is one of 41 Lieutenant Governors in the Florida District. Cerquera along with her counterparts statewide just returned from their own district board level training in Haines City conducted by the Florida District of Kiwanis Committee on Key Club. This is where they learned more about their position and refined many skills necessary to discharge the responsibilities of their position. Counsel of Customer Programs at the USPS and is awaiting a response. I respectfully request, within all applicable rules and regulations, for the full and fair consideration of Miami Lakes’ FOIA request and would appreciate a response on this matter. Thank you in advance and I look forward to your response.” Rubio’s request on behalf of Miami Lakes is a glimmer of hope, as the town has been fighting for years to gain its own independent zip code to help lower car insurance and homeowners insurance premiums, among other issues. The three zip codes Miami Lakes uses are registered with the city of Hialeah Postmaster. Since he was elected to political office in 2014, Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Manny Cid has been leading the charge for an independent zip code, which is also on the agenda of U.S. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart. Cid called for a straw vote in 2014 to determine if residents want the town to resume pursuing its own zip code. Residents overwhelmingly approved the initiative. “Our Town is very fortunate to have two great public servants representing us in the nations Capitol,” Cid said. “Senator Rubio and Congressman Mario DiazBalart are diligently working to ensure that our residents voices are heard and respected. Senator Rubio took time out of his busy schedule to voice his support of our zip code initiative. We still have a lot of work ahead of us but we are closer to our goal of an independent zip code.”

Heat All-Stars team competes in SWAMP Classic tourney The Miami Lakes Heat All Stars team competed in the 19th annual USSSA SWAMP Classic two-day tournament in West Palm Beach. The team’s coaches and the players’ parents said it was a brave performance by the girls who are 14 and 15 years old who defeated the two 18 and under teams, Plantation Pressure and Miami Stingrays, to make it to the championship game. “The girls played valiantly,” said head coach Alex Castroman. Castroman said offensively, the team recorded 28 hits in five games, and defensively committed only three errors with five

double plays and a couple of amazing defensive plays as well. “Our pitching was great that weekend, which was led by Ashley Alfonso and Cassidy Zeigler,” Castroman said. “They pitched great and they hung in there even playing three games in row.” Castroman added: “The coaches and parents couldn’t be prouder of all our girls. Some of these girls have been playing together for the past four to five years and many of them have played at Miami Lakes Optimist Park since first grade. This shows that hard work and dedication can finally pay off.”

Residents are encouraged to Health Hints: help reduce costly sewer clogs Identifying The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is asking Miami-Dade residents to help reduce and eliminate costly clogs within the county’s nearly 6,800 miles of sewer lines due to “flushable” wipes. Out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind. There is a growing national problem of wipes in pipes that result in increased sewer clogs, broken pumps, and other large pieces of sewer machines and equipment. The culprit is premoistened towelettes in the form

of baby wipes, cleaning wipes, paper towels and feminine products. These products do not breakdown within the sewer system and can result in costly clogs as well as sewer backups within homes. It is recommended that only toilet paper be flushed down the toilet and all other products to be disposed of in the trash. For additional information about department services and programs visit www.miamidade. gov/water.

By Ricky Ali Special to The Miami Laker After establishing a purpose in life, and having a firm belief that you can successfully accomplish your life and fitness goals, the next step is to develop a plan that includes a series of organized strategies that can help you achieve your goals. First, identify all the aspects of a healthy life. The four major components of health and fitness are: Wellness, Lifestyle, Nutrition and Fitness. Each component also has many sub-components, for example Wellness can include stress management and disease prevention. The same is true for all areas. Notice how these components intersect. A poor lifestyle habit of excessive alcohol consumption can bring about a wellness issue of liver malfunction and both can affect the ability to improve health and fitness. Other aspects of a healthy life are developing and nurturing good support systems, maintaining healthy and meaningful relationships with others, showing empathy, and spiritual focus such as practicing whatever safe religious beliefs one might desire. Ultimately, not compromising moral, values, ethics and connecting with others are interconnected with a healthy life. The challenge is balancing all these aspects. It may seem overwhelming, but we have all accomplished some balance. The key is understanding that we are going to

MOVE NOW! SAVE MONEY!

aspects for a healthy life live for seventy-plus years, and it will take this life’s journey to grow, develop, experience, incorporate and slowly balance as many aspects as possible for our lifetime. One may never achieve complete balance, however the goal is to consistently strive to become a better, healthier person. That is the enriching fulfillment that will continually drive us to live a healthy happy life with ourselves and those around us. Dr. Maxwell Maltz estimated that it takes a minimum of 21 days to formulate a habit. However researchers at University College London conducted studies which indicated that it took participants an average of 66 days to formulate a new habit, with the least amount of days being 18 and the maximum being 254. There is really no magic number. However, I have found that it took me and the majority of my clients approximately 90 days, give or take a week or two, to decisively accept change, formulate new behavior, implement this new behavior and make a permanent behavioral change. Hence my 90 day rule, which seems to coincide with the fact that physiologically it takes about 90 days for the human body to undergo significant cellular and metabolic changes in response to progressive exercise stimulus. My suggested strategy is as follows. During the first month smaller proximal goals are set in a timely fashion that you can

accomplish. During month two further proximal goals are set that eventually direct you toward achieving the set goal at the end of month three. The objective is breaking down the goal into smaller time frames, like 3 months, where it is not overwhelming, yet attainable. An example would be a goal to drink 8 glasses of water. For the first month, drink 5 glasses of water every day. The next month drink 6. The third month drink 8 glasses of water. A habit can be solidified at this point. Keep in mind not everyone can meet these time frames, this is where you have to be flexible enough to understand and accept that you may need to continue some goals for another month or two or even three. There are goals that may take more over-all time and there are unforseen circumstances that can cease progress for a while. Overall, stay flexible with time, but always keep working toward your goals. They are attainable! At Shula’s Athletic Club, I’m very fortunate to part of a team of young professional coaches that share the same vision as I do. Together we are dedicated and committed to provide everyone in our facility and community with the highest quality service. We understand the importance of achieving goals and living a high quality, disease and injury free life.

Hialeah Miami Lakes star linebacker Jamari Lattimore joins NY Jets By The Miami Laker staff Former Hialeah Miami Lakes High School standout linebacker Jamari Lattimore was picked up by the New York Jets during the off season to help the team’s run defense that allowed 2,341 rushing yards, 3,746 passing yards and 401 points last season, and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. All in all, the Jets’ defense allowed 5,235 total yards and 25 points per game to finish with the sixth best defense in the NFL behind Seattle, Detroit, Denver, Buffalo and San Francisco. The team, which finished the season 4-12, needs more depth at defense to stop the run and passing attacks from some of the best offensive teams on their 2015 schedule, including Super Bowl champion New England, Indianapolis Colts, Dallas

Optimist baseball/softball sign up scheduled in August The Miami Lakes Optimist Club will be holding registration for the 2015 Fall baseball and softball season from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on consecutive Saturdays, August 8, 15 and 22, at Miami Lakes Middle School, 6425 Miami Lakeway North. The Optimist Club welcomes returning and new players to play in an exciting season. New players must bring a copy of their birth certificates to the registration,

which costs $145 per person. Only cash and checks are accepted. The Optimist Club is asking for more volunteers and coaches to participate in the baseball and softball season. player to help the Jets’ defense. In Green Bay, Lattimore, who started his career at the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, recorded 84 tackles (57 solo), four sacks and two interceptions. New head coach Todd Bowles, who was the Arizona Cardinals’ defense coordinator last season, is looking to rebuild the team, especially the defense and sought linebackers with speed and aggressive tackling. Lattimore, 26, signed with the Packers in 2011 as an undrafted rookie from Middle Tennessee State and was converted from defensive end to linebacker. The Packers’ scouts thought he would be a good fit to the team’s defense after witnessing his record-breaking performances in college. Lattimore spent his first college year at Dodge City Community College in Kansas, where he recorded 60 tackles, a team high nine sacks and two interceptions. He transferred to Middle Tennessee State and registered 22 tackles (5.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks and broke up two passes during his sophomore year. As a junior, he finished the season with 47 tackles, (9.5 for loss) and 5.5 sacks, earning him second team All-Sun Belt honors. As a senior, he had 11.5 sacks, a team record in a game with four, 68 tackles, blocked two kicks and forced two fumbles, as he was named Sun-Belt player of the year.

M. Lakes family celebrates newest Pace graduate By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Cayla Pla was just one of the many members of Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Class of 2015 who graduated this past May. However, her graduation marks yet another chapter in a tradition of five Spartan Pla women. This tradition started with Cayla’s mother Carmen PlaIzquierdo, a Pace Class of 1981 alumna. Carmen studied in the health field after Pace, receiving a Bachelors and Masters degree in Health Services Administration from Capella University. She now works as the VP of Revenue Cycle Operations for Accretive Health and as an adjunct professor in Health Services at Florida International University. Her education has continued even further as she is currently pursuing a

Doctorate of Health Services at Nova Southeastern University. The eldest Pla daughter is Cristina Pla-Guzman, a Class of 2002 Pace graduate and now Pace High’s esteemed lead teacher for its Academy of Visual & Performing Arts Theatre Program. Next in line is Cynthia PlaLebron, Class of 2005. She earned her Bachelor’s in Health Science from FIU and a Master of Public Health from the University of Miami. Currently, she is enrolled as part of the inaugural class of the Prevention Science doctoral program at UM. Joining her sister Cristina in the education field is Crystal Pla, who graduated from Pace in 2010 and is currently enrolled in a Bachelors program at Miami Dade College for Pre-Elementary Education. The youngest Pla daughter,

Cayla, will be attending Miami Dade College and FIU through a dual-admissions program. During her four years as a Spartan, Cayla was a leader among her peers as part of the cheerleading, leadership, and drama programs while maintaining excellent grades. The Pla family involvement with Pace extends to the father, Carlos Pla, who has acted as a technical director and mastermind of Pace Drama’s elaborate sets ever since his daughter Cristina began working at her alma mater in 2007. On graduation day, the Pla family came together to watch Cayla walk across the stage and receive her Pace high school diploma, fulfilling a legacy that has spanned two generations.

Miami-Dade County School Board honors 136 students who graduated this year having achieved 100 percent perfect attendance Miami-Dade County School Board members honored 136 graduating students for successfully managing to attend every school day during their tenure with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Regular and punctual school attendance is one of the most important factors to a student’s progress in school. School attendance is widely regarded as a

major contributing element in academic performance and student conduct. To earn this recognition, students must have entered MDCPS in either kindergarten or the first grade and must have attended school every day of every year through the 12th grade. “The students honored today are truly remarkable,” said School Board member Lubby Navarro, “as they have distinguished them-

selves through many years of hard work to obtain a perfect attendance record throughout their elementary and secondary years of school.” The students will be receiving a certificate of achievement for an outstanding accomplishment as a result of their dedication, discipline, commitment, and perseverance in having a perfect school attendance record.

Goleman adds one-of-a-kind law enforcement magnet By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Without missing a beat, Barbara Goleman Senior High School has celebrated the accomplishments of its 2015 graduating class while simultaneously planning for the future. As the first graduating Capstone class left the halls of Goleman for higher education, for 2015-2016 new students will be entering into a new magnet program called the National Security Intelligence Academy (NSI). The NSI Academy is also referred to as The Law Enforcement and Intelligence Studies Magnet. This one-of-a-kind magnet program was specially designed at Goleman and the only magnet affiliated with the Florida Bureau of Investigation, Miami Division in Miami-Dade County. The academy has two strands: The Law Enforcement and Intelligence strand and Forensic Science. Magnet academy leader for the NSI program and Command and Tactical Operations Center Specialist (CTOC) Peter Falcon, has been teaching for 23 years and has been working with the FBI, Miami Division, for 25 years. Falcon, along with the administration at Goleman, have worked to create the magnet as a place for any student interested in law

enforcement and forensic science to learn from specialists and apply academic studies into real life scenarios. The magnet will facilitate entry into various law enforcement careers. “This program is both for students who are college bound and for those who are interested in pursuing other avenues of law enforcement, like the police academy following graduation,” said Falcon. “For me, it’s exciting because I am combining 23 years of teaching and 25 years with the FBI, Miami Division to do this program. This magnet is really for any student interested in starting a career in law enforcement.” Students enrolled in the Law Enforcement/Intelligence Studies (NSI) Magnet will increase their knowledge of the challenges facing the United States and the world in the coming decades, including issues such as domestic and international terrorism, transitional crime, climate change, food, and health security. Thesis-based research, seminars, field trips, workshops and simulations conducted by local and federal law enforcement agencies will be commonplace within the program. Additionally, students will study the historical development of the U.S. democra-

cy and the institution of law, examining policing, courts, and corrections as separate entities that work together to control crime. They will evaluate how policy implications shape legislative decisionmaking, procedures, and treatment modalities offered to offenders. For the Forensic Science strand, students will learn to gather and analyze evidence found, solve crimes using genetics, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and psychology, and learn the techniques in securing, searching, and examining evidence. The magnet will also feature a Police Explorers program, a youth organization hosted by the MiamiDade Schools Police Department (MDSPD) to educate the student explorers in the area of law enforcement. Some courses available within the magnet are comprehensive law, international relations, introduction to homeland security, and program highlights include labs, seminars and field trips in conjunction with the FBI, Miami Division, model united nations simulations, internship placement, and crime scene investigation among others. Collaborating partners with the program are FBI, Miami Division, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Miami-Dade Police Department, Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, and the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) Teachers Law School. “This isn’t a club,” said school principal, Joaquin Hernandez.

PETER FALCON (left) is the Academy Leader for the new NSI Magnet at Goleman Senior High School. He is joined by students (from left) Lauren Torres, Christian Lamas, and Hannah Capote. “This is an entire magnet that is essentially being led and taught by the same personnel that will be accepting employees like special agents, attorneys, accountants, and law enforcement personnel in the future.” Applications are currently being accepted for the program though spaces are rapidly filling. Additional information for applications can be obtained at the school, 14100 N.W. 89 Avenue in

Miami Lakes. To be eligible, students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in core academic subjects, a minimum of 2.0 in conduct, and no more than 10 unexcused absences. After applications are received a computerized random selection process is used for student selection among those who are eligible. For more information call 305362-0676.

ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Dr. Jan Bell throws out the first pitch during a recent Miami Marlins home game.

Celebrating a 30-year tenure at St. Thomas University, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends all came together for several special events to honor Dr. Jan Bell who retired at the end of this academic year as professor of Sports Administration. The celebration began on November 2 when Bell became the 10th inductee into the Bobcat Sports Hall of Fame at the sixth annual Stone Crab Dinner for Athletics. A sold-out crowd of over 600 attendees came out to the event and dozens of Sports Administration alumni submitted video messages to Bell. On March 20, the Miami Heat hosted a suite at the American Airlines Arena during the HeatNuggets game to toast Bell and thank her for her impact on the three-time NBA Championship organization. Nine alumni who studied under Dr. Bell currently work full-time for the Heat, including senior vice president/ general manager Andy Elisburg. The celebration continued on May 22, as over 125 guests joined Bell for a retirement party at Marlins Park as the Baltimore Orioles took on the Miami Marlins. Surrounded by the 12 STU Spo-Ad alumni currently working for the Marlins, Bell threw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch, then was able to enjoy the matchup between her two favorite MLB teams with alumni spanning her 30 years. Other accolades this year

include Bell being honored as one of South Florida’s Most Influential Women as part of Miami Dade Parks and Recreation’s 27th annual In the Company of Women Awards Ceremony as part of Women’s History Month. Post-retirement, Bell will continue to have a presence on the STU campus as she will continue her duties as the NAIA Faculty

Athletic Representative for the Department of Athletics. In recognition of Bell’s enduring impact on STU, the University has established the Dr. Jan Bell Sports Administration Scholarship Fund. The endowed fund will provide scholarship monies to deserving Sports Administration students.

Pace High students give back to the community with quarterly blood drives By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker In accordance with their Catholic beliefs and dedication to community service, Pace High School students have always gone above and beyond to help those in need. No where is this more evident than its quarterly student-run blood drives held at the school. Pace student volunteers from the Leadership team run each blood drive in conjunction with the One Blood organization which provides the buses and necessary materials for donations. The drives were so successful that, at one point, three buses were taking donations at capacity. Their contributions help not just those patients who suffer traumatic injuries, but also those who suffer from chronic diseases and conditions such as cancers, leukemia, and blood disorders. Dr. Robert De Valle, a Pace parent, husband to Pace alumna Christine Maseo, and Miami Lakes resident, volunteers to supervise each drive. Even after years of helping out, Del Valle is

still blown away by the dedication, good will, and charity of the student volunteers and blood donors. “One student related it to Jesus giving himself up to save others,” said Del Valle. “It was her way to be more like Christ.” Every unit of blood helps three

patients in need, according to Del Valle, and given the short shelflife of blood products, a constant flow of donations is important. In total, Pace High School students and faculty donated 134 pints of blood during the 2014-2015 school year. In addition to all of the community contributions, the 2014-2015 blood drives have amassed around $15,000 in scholarship funds for Pace students.

Basulto Special to The Miami Laker The family and friends of 22 students from Pace High School crowded into the school’s Administration Building to watch them become the latest inductees into the school’s Spanish National Honors Society, called Nuestra Huellas, which translates to “Our Footprints.” Pace’s Spanish National Honors Society is moderated by Celita Cabrera, a beloved Spanish teacher who has worked at the school for nearly 25 years. She and Spanish teacher Francisco Soto managed the induction ceremony to welcome the 22 underclassmen into the school chapter for the 2015-2016 school year. The administration building lobby was transformed into a festival hall with tables adorned with flags of Latin American and European countries along with a buffet table of Hispanic food. Miami Lakes Educational Center’s ‘Girls Who Code’ recognized by Google’s JaimeSue Goodman By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC) Girls Who Code club has traveled to Silicon Valley, Boston, and Canada to attend and participate in workshops and conventions and have caught the attention of JaimeSue Goodman, Project Leader for Google’s CS First initiative. Club members Michele Wu and Joanna Luo were mentioned by Goodman in her TedTalk titled “Lucky is a Lie” that took place in Charleston, North Carolina. In the video, which can be found at https://goo.gl/pcst25, Goodman posts Luo and Wu’s photo on the screen and explains how inexperience and age are not barriers for computer science and teaching outreach. “These two girls are high school juniors,” said Goodman. “This is Michelle and Joanna. They go to a school that has a strong technology focus. But they wanted to bring this opportunity to other kids near them. So they went to a middle school, took the materials with them and said ‘let us start a game design club.’ And now, they’re teaching kids younger than they are. They’re high school juniors, they have no background in teaching and they can bring this opportunity to others just like all of you can.”

PROJECT LEADER for Google’s CS First initiative, JaimeSue Goodman, mentioned MLEC students Michele Wu and Joanna Luo in her TedTalk.

CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING MDCPS begins operations review At a special meeting of the Miami-Dade County School Board, Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho presented a re-structuring overhaul of the District’s operations. The reorganization focuses on a realignment of purpose, functions, and positions, resulting in a savings of over $6.5 million for the school district. The plan was unanimously approved by the School Board. The reorganization eliminates redundancies and duplication of services, promotes and augments transparency in function and management of the school district. The plan also places greater attention on early childhood education and helps align the arts and music programs along with science, moving from STEM to STEAM (adding the arts to STEM). “Through efficiencies, strategic alignments, and reinvestments in the protection and expansion of school site programs, this reorganization plan will result in over $6.5 million in savings to the School Board,” said Carvalho. In addition, School Board members also unanimously approved an item to create a task force that will advise the district on how to best move forward with plans to redevelop 10 acres of School Board-owned real estate. The land is located in the heart of Miami’s Arts and Entertainment District. “We need to consider this not as a short-term deal that enlarges the coffers of the district for a year or two and then dries up,” said Carvalho. “This is an incredible opportunity to monetize and provide long-term funding for many educational programs.” The District’s guiding principles and priorities for this redevelopment plan include maintaining a comprehensive educational presence in the area and a District administrative presence in downtown Miami inclusive of WLRN or considering other no cost alternatives. Additionally, maximizing the financial benefit to the Board, both short and long-term and complementing current community infrastructure, such as public transportation.
