Town officials react to a proposed Hollywood residents urge cities to join study to expand Opa Locka airport Miami-Dade in anti-blasting petition By The Miami Laker staff After Miami Lakes was placed on alert over a proposed Miami-Dade County resolution to possibly expand operations at Miami International Airport and Opa Locka Airport, which could have a serious impact on residents’ quality of life, the town’s elected voices publicly opposed the idea for the latter airfield facility. Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmembers

Nelson Rodriguez and Luis Collazo attended the July 6 County Commission meeting to explain their opposition to Commissioner Sally Heyman’s resolution, which directs Mayor Carlos Gimenez to conduct a study to analyze existing services and potential growth opportunities at Miami International Airport and Opa Locka Airport. The Miami Lakes contingent indicated additional aviation activities would ruin residents’

Summer Safety Tips for pets By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Summertime seems to last all year round in South Florida but the actual summer months are particularly hot. Sun and water safety tips for pets are often overlooked but are imperative to having a fun and accidentfree summer with man’s best friend. Fresh water: Pets become dehydrated very quickly in the heat so new bowls of fresh, cool water kept under shady areas is best for man’s best friend. Pool supervision: Make sure to never leave pets unsupervised around a pool, even near pools with covers, since they can drink the water which isn’t safe, or they may fall in. Fur: Trim fur in the hotter months of the summer to help with overheating but do not shave them down completely as

the fur acts as a barrier to the sun and prevents sunburn. Hot paws: Keep daytime walks short as the hot asphalt can burn paws. Indoors: Try to keep pets indoors in the shade and air conditioning as much as possible to prevent overheating. Know the signs: Symptoms of overheating in pets include drooling, weakness, increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, excessive panting, and in some cases seizures, collapse, bloody diarrhea and vomit. No to cars: Never leave pets unattended in a vehicle. Summertime or not, pets must be supervised. Florida animal cruelty laws may apply when leaving a pet in a hot car. This information was gathered from American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

quality of life and could bring down property values. Rodriguez was the most vocal in the town’s opposition and said he was miffed the county didn’t notify the town about the new proposed 800,000 square-foot Amazon Fulfillment Center at Opa Locka Executive Airport, since the expansion would impact the town as well. The project will create over 1,000 full-time jobs with benefits, county officials say. “I’m concerned with the possibility of increased air traffic and noise at Opa Locka Airport,” Rodriguez said. “Another concern is that the Town of Miami Lakes hasn’t been invited to participate in (Please See Page 2)

By The Miami Laker staff Fed up with damages to residential properties allegedly caused by the rock mining industry’s blasting, the residents of Riviera Isles in Hollywood launched a petition drive to cease the operations, and they are calling on other cities also affected by the explosions to join their campaign. According to the petition, Riviera Isles residents are asking cities such as Miami Lakes, Sunset Falls, Sunset Lakes, Country Club Ranches, Miramar and unincorporated Palm Springs North to be part of the crusade to once and for all put a stop to White Rock Quarries’ blasting operations that are used to make materials for road and

building construction. They claim the operations are causing severe structural damages to their homes and ruining their quality of life. “The frequency and the impact of the rock mining blasting have increased over time,” the petition states. “It’s like living in a war zone.” So far, the petition has netted 1,850 signatures, needing a total of 2,500 to be certified and subsequently sent to Florida Governor Rick Scott, Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, who regulates blasting through the Fire Marshall Office, and State Representative Manny Diaz. Residents affected by rock blasts circulating petitions to end activity (Continued from Page 1) Though representatives from the Fire Marshall Office said the rock mining industry is blasting within federal and state guidelines, exasperated residents said the explosions are causing cracks in their homes, driveways and pools; broken light bulbs and windows; and damages to their roofs. In June, Miami Lakes hosted a town hall meeting, where the equally frustrated residents turned to officials from the state’s Fire Marshall Office in hopes of ceasing the damages to their properties. In an effort to find some solutions to the homeowners’ problem, the state has allocated $325,000 to study the impact of blasting and determine if the rules need to be changed to prevent more property damages. Before Diaz, State Representative Jose Oliva and State Senator Rene Garcia secured the funding for the blasting study, residents in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, had

formed their own solutions to prevent further property damages. Some cities in Broward, including Miramar, created Blasting Citizen Advisory Committees to update state elected officials on the conditions of their homes following explosions and propose some resolutions. They also pushed for Scott to step in and save their properties from the blasting, even going as far as traveling to Tallahassee and waiting for him in front of his office. Miami Lakes’ elected officials worked with Diaz, Oliva and Garcia which culminated in the funding for the blasting study, but they also paid a visit to the State Capitol to express their anger to the Fire Marshall Office over their blasting-ravaged properties. At the town hall meeting in Miami Lakes, officials from the Fire Marshall Office told residents they can file a suit under the Homeowners Protection Act

if blasting caused damages to their properties. Residents claims would be heard during the Division of Administration Hearings and an administrative judge would decide rather homeowners would be compensated for the damages. A northwest Miami-Dade resident said another claims process is unfair to homeowners since the rock mining industry is the judge and jury on a homeowner’s claim. “They pick the inspectors to come to our homes and they say the cracks and damages happened because your home is settling,” she said. One Miramar resident said the effects of blasting led him to put his house up for sale but the rock miners’ operations have scared away potential buyers.

Miami Lakes officials were taken by surprise on study of expanding Opa Locka Airport (Continued from Page 1) any discussions of the 1.2 million square feet of developments ongoing at Opa Locka Airport, such as the new Amazon distribution center. As a bordering neighbor, I believe Miami Lakes needs to be included in discussions of future developments at Opa Locka Airport.” Rodriguez also asked the county to bring back the Noise Abatement Committee for Opa Locka Airport. Following the comments of opposition, Heyman said the study would include any negative impacts to the surrounding areas of both airports. According to the resolution, the two airports should be the leading engines for jobs creation in South Florida, given their size, ease of access to multiple locations within MiamiDade, Broward and Monroe counties, and their airfield capacity. The resolution also states that the county should work with developers or lessees to bring aviation and non-aviation related businesses to both airports to help them achieve their potential growth. The study would determine whether such services are the highest and best uses of the airports in terms of job creation and ensuring both airports remain available for aviation users consistent with federal law. When the town first learned of the resolution, Cid called an emergency meeting at Miami

Lakes Town Hall, where council members voiced their concerns and agreed to appear before the County Commission. Councilmembers instructed town staff to write Heyman a letter explaining their opposition to her resolution. “It’s a serious matter because of the grave impact on the quality of life on our residents,” Cid said at the emergency meeting. For years, Miami Lakes residents were concerned about additional commercial and cargo flights at Opa Locka Airport but breathed a sigh of relief in 2001 when thenCounty Commissioner Miriam Alonso successfully sponsored a resolution to prevent additional flights at the airport.

Gwen Graham launches campaign in Florida’s gubernatorial race Gwen Graham, daughter of former U.S. Senator and Florida Governor Bob Graham, announced her candidacy to serve as the state’s next governor during an early May press conference in Miami Gardens. “We do not have time for typical politics, because this is the time to paint Florida’s future in sharp lines, and bold colors,” Graham said. With her family by her side, she said after almost 20 years of enduring a state government with the wrong priorities for the wrong people, she would renew Florida’s education system, environment and economy. Citing her experience as a working mother, PTA president and school board official, Graham said she is determined to end the lottery shell game diverting funds from Florida schools and high-stakes testing. Graham announced her campaign next to Miami Carol City Senior High School, where she spent a full Workday alongside educators teaching students, the same high school where her father performed his first Workday in 1974. “As governor, I won’t just criticize this culture of teaching to the test, I will end it,” she said. “Because high-stakes standardized testing has led us to one-size-fits-all learning. Yet our children, parents, and teachers are not one-dimensional. Our children, parents, and teachers are not standardized. I

Graham called for Florida to raise the minimum wage, provide paid sick leave, invest in infrastructure, and diversity Florida’s economy. On the environment, Graham said she would use Amendment One funds to protect sensitive land and water, fight oil drilling off the state’s beaches, and ban fracking in Florida. She addressed the threat climate change poses to the state.

Rev. A. Bertram Miller, founding minister of Miami Lakes Congregational Church The Rev. A. Bertram Miller, 90, founding pastor of the Miami Lakes Congregational Church, passed away on June 22 after a tragic fall and resulting head injury while on his way north to Vermont for the summer. The son of a Congregational minister, Miller grew up in South Dakota, New Hampshire and Connecticut. He was a veteran of the Navy V-12 program in World War II, followed by graduation from Harvard in 1947 and Yale Divinity School in 1950. His ministry in the United Church of Christ spanned over 60 years from Coral Gables, where he met his wife, Mary Margaret Roberts, to Austin Texas, St. Johnsbury Vermont, Miami Lakes, and Church by the Sea in Bal Harbor, followed by interim work after his retirement at Key Biscayne Community Church, and Christ Congregational Church. Miller was active in denominational affairs, community and ecumenical endeavors, and social justice projects, and was a founding board member of the Samaritan Counseling Center in south Florida. Following his “second retirement” as interim minister, he sang in the choirs at Miami Lakes and Church by the Sea, greatly enjoying his trip with the latter to Carnegie Hall in

In Memoriam:

Admiral Diego Hernandez “We who serve tend not to look on it as remarkable,” retired Admiral Diego E. Hernandez was quoted as saying in a modest but direct manner one expects of a military man, in a Miami Laker feature article on November 2, 2001. “Remarkable” might be the best word to mark the career of this highly decorated Navy veteran who was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Miami Lakes Veterans Day Parade on November 11, 2001. He also served as Grand Marshal of the 1999 Veterans Day Parade. Vice Admiral Hernandez, whose military career spanned from 1955 to 1993, was a longtime Miami Lakes resident. He died July 7 at 83 of complications from Parkinson’s disease at his Miami Lakes home. He served in a variety of assignments in Navy fighter squadrons, flying from aircraft carriers deployed around the world. He flew two combat tours during the Vietnam War and was highly decorated for gallantry in action. Hernandez rose through the ranks and a succession of high profile assignments: Commanding officer of carrier Air Wing Six, commanding officer of Fleet Oiler U.S.S. Truckee, commanding officer of Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Caribbean, commander of Carrier Group Six, and commander of the U.S. Third Fleet.

RET. ADMIRAL DIEGO HERNANDEZ His last assignment on active duty was a deputy commander in chief of the U.S. Space Command, and at the same time, served as vice commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command. Upon retiring, Hernandez and his wife, Sherry, moved to Miami Lakes in 1991. In addition to his wife, Hernandez is survived by daughters, Selena Haines and Dolores Lane; granddaughter, Angelina Haines; and sister, Rose, A viewing was held on July 14 at Vista Memorial Gardens in Miami Lakes and a Funeral Mass was held on July 15 at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.

Resident Jenny Expinosa opens Miami Lakes private school By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Tutor Me Private School K-6 located at 6600 Cow Pen Road, Suite 201, was launched by local resident, Jenny Espinosa, to serve the community. A former teacher who earned her specialist degree in early childhood education and is Director Credential Certified through the Florida Department of Children and Families, Jenny saw a need and sought to fill it. “I wanted to provide a unique school setting where the students can advance beyond their grade level,” said Espinosa. “Classrooms are usually filed with 40 students for every one teacher, so the students who need special attention usually fall and stay behind. I wanted to offer something different.” The classrooms at Tutor Me Private School K-6 have a maximum of 10 students per classroom, something that won’t be changing no matter how much the school expands. “We will add more teachers for each grade level as we grow, but classrooms will always be kept small,” said Espinosa. This isn’t Espinosa’s first educational rodeo. She has founded, launched and sold a number of private schools, tutoring centers and daycare centers over the last 25 years. Her students attend schools like Archbishop McCarthy, Monsignor Pace, Jose Marti

Theatre Review:

Bad Jews is a thought-provoking performance By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Poppy managed to survive Auschwitz and hide his father’s chai, a necklace that translates to ‘life’ in Hebrew, all through the camp and war. Now that Poppy has passed, he leaves his chai to his three grandchildren, but who deserves it the most? Bad Jews by Joshua Harmon has come to the black box theater stage at the Main Street Playhouse where Daphna, Liam and Jonah engage in a cerebral tug of war while Liam’s girlfriend Melody tries befriending her boyfriend’s family at the worst possible time. Director Robert Coppel’s assembled cast of seasoned and novice talent brings depth and variety to Bad Jews, particularly Hannah Benitez as Daphna Feygenbaum with her ability to make Daphna’s rough edges palatable and complex in a play with the capacity to devolve its characters into caricatures when in the hands of lesser performers. The cast includes Joseph Paul Pino as Liam Haber, Matthew Ferro as Jonah Haber, and Kimmi Johnson as Melody. Daphna is unrelenting. She’s a steamroller, even for herself, unable to finish the thoughts moving at a rapid-fire pace in her head. Her lips can’t keep up. She is knowledgeable on Jewish law, visited Israel on a birthright trip and plans to marry a Jewish man named Gilad. You can’t help but wonder while watching her verbal sparring how much of that is rooted in anxiety. The only ones on their toes for every insult thrown their way are the ones who live expecting it. The first words Daphna says are an insult to her cousin Jonah and she takes digs at Jonah’s brother, Liam, who was unable to attend the funeral, mocking him in a voice younger siblings in the audience will quickly recognize - the shrillness of adolescent exasperation. Daphna is surreptitiously laying the ground work to claim her Poppy’s chai, with recollection of memories that paint Liam as the complete antithesis to Poppy, and by extension herself. Though nuance is at times lost in Pino’s take on Liam, there is an undeniable spirit to his performance especially when opposite Johnson’s Melody, who’s characterization elicits multiple facets to Liam’s personality beyond the shouting. Liam is earning his Ph.D. in Asian Studies and dating, as Daphna affectionately calls her after a probe into her ancestry, a Delawarian. Liam refuses to let his background dictate his life and his desires but despite the

disconnect between himself and his culture, he believes he is most worthy of the chai because it is as much a story of love as it is one of survival, a love he shares with Melody. Melody wears uggs, her favorite book is Eat, Pray, Love, and she has a tattoo of a treble cleft, yet she is a welcome reprieve from the loud tirades wrought with complication. As Liam says in response to Daphna’s accusation that Liam dates intellectually inferior women, “she’s simple, but she’s uncomplicated. She’s a song I can’t stop singing.” If kindness isn’t a virtue, then Melody is out of luck, but her juxtaposition against the yelling and disrespect begs the question if being a “Good Jew” equates to being a good person, or if being a “Bad Jew” equates to being a bad person? Melody is not a perfect character, she lacks tactful understanding of identity but her kindness isn’t saccharine, nor is it theoretical. She pushes those around her to be civil because the chai can mean life, tradition, or love but what good is any of it without the compassion imbued in those ideas? Despite Daphna and Liam voicing their claim to the chai, it is Jonah who manages to simultaneously break Jewish law, honor his grandfather, and bring stillness and reflection after an unexpected reveal. All three felt the loss of their Poppy, most especially in the pregnant silence that follows a boisterous laughing session between the cousins reminiscing about

Benihana and how Asian cuisine did not suit Jewish digestive tracts. Even for those with no ties to Jewish culture, Bad Jews is a thought-provoking performance that forces audiences to reevaluate what they stand for and how the most profound truths are not shouted. Drs. Eddy and Melissa Sedeño open Specialty Smiles offices By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Eddy Sedeño and his wife Melissa have taken ownership of Taylor Orthodontics, a longestablished orthodontic practice in the Windmill Gate Shopping Center in Miami Lakes, 16375 N.W. 67 Avenue, which is now known as Specialty Smiles. Sedeño is a homegrown Miami Lakes native who attended Our Lady of the Lakes, Monsignor Pace High School and is a “triple gator,” as is his wife, both having earned their undergraduate degrees, specialty degrees and completed residencies at the University of Florida. When the opportunity came to take over Taylor Orthodontics, Sedeño jumped at the opportunity. The practice, which has a loyal patient base, will be transitioning under the care of the Sedeño’s who are working currently with Dr. Taylor to familiarize themselves with patient histories. Melissa Sedeño is board certified and Eddy Sedeño is board eligible, with the American Board of Orthodontics, which only one in three orthodontists are certified due to the extensive hundreds of additional hours of

preparation for ultimate patient treatment. They are also part of the American Association of Orthodontists. “Dr. Taylor’s practice has such a great reputation, we are very happy and excited to continue that reputation and offer great treatment to the Miami Lakes community. I’m happy to be back in my hometown,” said Eddy Seneño. Free consultations are avail-

able and services offered include invisalign, metal braces, clear braces, and more for adults and children. The practice will be maintaining hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and one Saturday a month. All visits are by appointment only which can be made online at www.specialtysmiles.com or by calling 305-822-6784.

Com. Esteban Bovo Jr. applauds MDX toll relief Toll relief and additional funding for transportation services recently became the bright spots for Miami-Dade when the County Commission burst into cheers during a meeting. Miami-Dade County Commission chairman Esteban Bovo Jr. thanked Florida’s Governor Rick Scott for signing House Bill 1049 that will result in MDX toll relief and more funding for transit in Miami-Dade County, which is needed to make upgrades. “I would like to thank Governor Scott for signing HB 1049 that will provide much needed toll relief and additional resources to support Miami’s SMART Plan,” said Bovo, who represents District 13, which includes Miami Lakes and Palm Springs North. “In addition, I would also like to thank Representative Bryan Avila, Speaker Pro Temp Jeanette Nunez, President Pro Temp Anitere Flores and Senator Rene Garcia who were also instrumental in the passage

of this bill that supports transit solutions for the residents of Miami-Dade County.” House Bill 1049, sponsored by Avila, calls for the MiamiDade Expressway Authority (MDX) to reduce tolls for SunPass users by at least five percent on all five MDX roadways and imposes new restrictions on potential future toll rate hikes while providing further accountability and transparency. The bill, which was approved on May 5 and signed on June 26 also requires MDX to dedicate at least 20 percent of surplus revenues to transportation and transit-related projects around MDX roadways, and for the Miami-Dade County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) to annually list projects within the county to be funded by MDX dedicated surplus revenues. MDX operates the Dolphin Expressway, Airport Expressway, Don Shula Expressway, Snapper Creek Expressway and Gratigny Parkway.

Tony Lama exits Council with inspiring thoughts The following letter was furnished to The Miami Laker by Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Tony Lama: Dear Colleagues, Town Staff, and Residents of Miami Lakes, I want to formally inform you that July 25 will be my last day serving the great Town of Miami Lakes as Councilman/ Vice Mayor. As most of you know by now, I have accepted a career opportunity in Seattle, Washington, and my family and I will be moving to the Pacific Northwest over the course of the summer. I want to share that this decision was not taken lightly and it was made after much thought and prayer. As I evaluated my personal and professional goals, it

dawned on me that we live most of our lives in reactionary mode. We are constantly responding to change that is thrust upon us and we adapt in order to get through life. However, I have found that growth, both personal and professional, is accelerated when we willfully venture outside of our comfort zones and serve as an agent of change. This is one of those moments in my life where I didn’t wait for life to present its new challenge. Instead, we actively pursued it and Eileen, the children, and I are excited about what the future will bring for us all. I want to thank each and every one of your for your support over the years. We have truly become a family and I am honored to have served the

Town of Miami Lakes with you all at my side. We have the best volunteers! We have the best staff! We have the best events! The 4th of July, 2017, was epic! Miami Lakes is a gem. It is a special place and it will always be home for my family. This Council has done great things and I am proud to have worked with you all. We have made very difficult decisions and while we haven’t always been right, I know that our hearts were in the right place. We worked hard to rebuild our image after some difficult times and we continue to foster a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect. I urge you and our residents to continue to reject elements that do not honor the basic principles of respect and ethical and

American High’s softball team plays summer league but reflects on 2017 season

As the players for American High’s softball team compete in summer travel league play for the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes, the girls can’t help but to reflect on the 2017 season. Chicago Cubs call up Miami Dade College grad Victor Caratini as big league rookie Former Miami Dade College baseball player Victor Caratini got the call of his career last week when the World Series Champions Chicago Cubs called him up to the big leagues as a catcher against the Milwaukee Brewers. According to the Cubs’ media guide, Caratini, 23, will back up Willson Contreras for the remainder of the season. Although Caratini’s role is primarily a catcher, he has played first and third base in the minors. With his experience at different positions, the Cubs believe he “fits in nicely with Chicago’s versatile roster of position talent.” In the minors for the past three seasons, Caratini, who was born in Puerto Rico, batted .343, .384, and .539 at the Triple-A level. In addition, Caratina put up an OPS better than .900 from both sides of the plate this season. Before the Cubs called him up, ESPN ranked Caratini as Chicago’s 12th best prospect and Baseball America ranked

VICTOR CARATINI him as the 17th best player in the minors. During his lone season at MDC, Caratini hit .377/.467/.549 and received AllSouthern Conference First Team, FCSAA All-State Baseball First Team, and NJCAA All-Gulf District Team honors. In addition, Caratini was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year.

She then continued her academic work and received a Masters of Science in English Education from Nova Southeastern University. Upon having her Masters degree, De la Vega’s biggest educational dream and goal was still to obtain her Doctorate in Education. Throughout the coming years, De la Vega worked to complete her doctoral coursework and dissertation. Meanwhile, she got married, had children, and continued to work full time. She remembers, “Every time I wanted to walk away from this seemingly endless endeavor, I kept going back to that dream I had of who I wanted to be and what I wanted to achieve”. With a great deal of dedication as well as love and support from her family, she continued
