District 13 Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. reelected without opposition Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. was among three commissioners who automatically won another fouryear term in political office after they were unopposed at the end of the qualifying period last week. Commissioners Bruno Barreiro and Barbara Jordan also have no challengers for their reelection bids after the deadline to qualify for the August 30 primary election, according Miami-Dade’s Election Department. Commissioners Xavier Suarez, Audrey Edmonson, Dennis Moss and Juan Zapata weren’t so lucky. Political neophyte Michael Castro is challenging the incumbent Suarez for his District 7 seat, while former commissioner Joe Martinez is challenging Zapata to win back his old seat in District 11, which he gave up to run for mayor in 2012. Also running in the race is former pharmaceutical salesman and novice Felix Lorenzo. Edmonson is facing a familiar

foe in Daisy Black for her District 3 seat. Edmonson beat Black in the race for mayor in El Portal before she won a seat on the County Commission. In the county’s mayoral race, incumbent Carlos Gimenez’s reelection bid drew eight challengers, including his chief rival, Miami-Dade School Board member Raquel Regalado, the daughter of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado. Other candidates for mayor include former congressional staff member Alfred Santamarias, printer Frederick Bryant, former county Democratic Party chairman B.J. Chizsar, Miguel Eizmendiz and former gubernatorial candidate Farid Khavari. For Miami-Dade’s property appraiser, incumbent Pedro Garcia will serve four more years after no challengers filed papers to run against him. Garcia won a special election in 2014 to fill the remaining term of Carlos Lopez-Cantera, who left the post after Governor Rick Scott picked him as his Lieutenant Governor. Bovo thanked his supporters and vowed to continue to do the work on their behalf at County Hall. “Thank you to the residents of District 13,” Bovo said. It is an honor to continue serving you.” Bovo was first elected county commissioner in 2011 in a special election to replace Natacha Seijas, who was removed from office,

COMMISSIONER BOVO along with then-county Mayor Carlos Alvarez, during a recall. He was reelected the following year and served a full four-year term. Currently the vice chair of the County Commission, Bovo serves as chairman of the Board’s Transportation Mobility Committee, and is a member of the Unincorporated Municipal Services Committee and the Strategic Planning and Government Operations Committee. As the past chairman of the Board’s Finance Committee, Bovo earned a reputation as a fiscal hawk and has championed various legislative proposals designed to make county government more transparent and efficient.

Miami-Dade Police recognized Lakes Detective Myriam Nieves in June Miami-Dade police recognized Town of Miami Lakes Detective Myriam Nieves last month for her investigations that helped nab several suspects including one involved in auto fraud. Nieves was acknowledged for her dedication to duty and sustained investigative practices and community good will exhibited during the period of January through March of 2016. Her probe helped identify several vehicle burglars via surveillance and forensic evidence, which resulted in the closure of numerous vehicle burglaries in Miami Lakes, the Midwest District and Hialeah Gardens. During that time period, Nieves conducted a fraud investigation, which involved the fraudulent sale of a vehicle belonging to an elderly female to CarMax. Nieves was able to arrest the suspect and worked with CarMax to return the vehicle to the victim. “Detective Nieves is a true professional and dedicated to serving the residents of the Town of Miami Lakes,” said Miami Lakes Town Commander Major George Perez. “Congratulations to Detective Nieves for a job well done.” WE LIKE GOOD NEWS! M. Lakes Chamber welcomes ‘Life Teacher’ Hector Suco Educator, author and blogger Hector Suco is the guest speaker for the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce monthly membership meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, July 13 at Don Shula’s Hotel. Networking starts at 11:30 a.m. followed by lunch at 12 noon. Suco is a Miami native who has worked as an educator for MiamiDade Public Schools for years. Throughout his career, Suco has been asked by his students a wide range of questions. After answering one particular question, a student dubbed him, “The Life Teacher” and the name stuck with him. Hector started his blog, TheLifeTeacher.net, in 2014 and has since created worksheets that help people step out of their existence, see their problems from the outside, and start putting their lives in order. Suco compiled his worksheets into his first published book, titled “Life Worksheets.” Among the range of topics that Suco talks about is happiness. He said too many times, people see their work as a means to an end. They say to themselves, “I need to go to work in order to enjoy the things that make me happy.” Happiness of workers is paramount to the success of a business, Suco said. “Unhappy workers lead to a lack of productivity that equates to a loss of thousand of dollars a year. Business leaders need to understand that their employees

HECTOR SUCO come first,” he said. As a teacher, Suco has worked in five schools, under six different superiors. He experienced first hand the difference of leaders and their styles. Specifically, under which leaders made the process more enjoyable, and which did not. He plans to share his experiences with business leaders in Miami Lakes. Members and guests must reserve a table by 2 p.m., Friday, July 8. For more information on this or any other Miami Lakes Chamber event, contact Marta Diaz at 305556-2212 or email mdiaz@miami lakeschamber.com.

Olga Alvarez opens Nail Garden Salon in M. Lakes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Ocean Drive Magazine named Miami Lakes’ The Nail Garden as

one of Miami’s Top Nail Salons and even without stepping inside, it’s obvious why. Tucked away in a corner in the Lake Patricia

Shopping Center at 13969 N.W. 67 Avenue, one wouldn’t imagine that the intimate salon is frequently entertaining a revolving door of clients, some of whom travel from Pembroke Pines and Coral Gables to get pampered by the staff at The Nail Garden. Owner Olga Alvarez, and her daughter Caroline Alvarez, opened the doors to The Nail Garden in early 2016 and have barely seen a lull in traffic. Having lived in Miami Lakes for over 20 years, the Alvarez women are well-acquainted with the community and residents but that alone can’t account for the busy nature of the store. The secret, they suggest, is in their sanitary practices, services and the atmosphere. Olga designed and decorated the salon herself and combined the elegance of silver industrial decor with the softness of femininity in greys and pinks.

Upon walking in, there is a large chalkboard to the right that reads “Every woman is a flower, and all together make a beautiful garden.” The aesthetic of feminine charm is apparent in the hanging terrariums filled with sand and succulents that float over the salon’s “scrub of the week,” which is used in manicures and pedicures to soften and massage the skin. Gone are the days of begrudgingly visiting a salon with the strong smell of acetone and fluorescent lighting. The Nail Garden has tapped into a market of women eager to enjoy their visit to the salon and liken it more to a spa experience, and it delivers. In addition to various combinations of manicure and pedicure services, which are done in grey tufted Victorian chairs and elegant silver basins, the salon also offers waxing and facials. Guests are often offered coffee, wine or on

Saturdays, Mimosas, as they relax and the environment is made complete with the soft chatter of women and low hum of music. “There’s nothing like this concept in Miami Lakes,” said Olga. “We wanted to design it in a way that women can look forward to getting their nails done.” The large selection of colors, including Sprout colors for little girls who want to join in on their mom’s manicure, features notable brands like OPI and Essie. Walk-ins are not always available so the salon encourages clients to make an appointment ahead of time by calling 786-5362829 or booking online at w w w. s e c u r e - b o o k . c o m / N a i l Garden/Home.aspx. St. Thomas receives $40,000 American Airlines donation in honor of Marilyn DeVoe American Airlines donated $40,000 to St. Thomas University in honor of American Airlines vice president Marilyn DeVoe, who is retiring after 39 years with the airline. DeVoe, a lifelong advocate for education, has served as vice president since 2010. Her relationship with STU started 17 years ago, when she worked with the school’s president Monsignor Franklyn Casale to build a vocational school in Haiti called Haiti Tec. It was built by an alliance of South Florida businesses, which included The Miami Herald, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, The Children’s Trust and six Haitian business associations, as well as American Airlines. DeVoe was recently named a member of St. Thomas University’s President’s Board of

Advisors. “We believe education lays a foundation for excellence, and American Airline’ generous gift in honor of Marilyn tells us they feel the same,” said Casale. “This is a fitting way to honor someone that values the power of a good education.” STU will use the donation to continue developing leaders for life, and to provide scholarships to its students. "Marilyn is a homegrown hero at American, having begun her career in the finance department in 1977,” said Robert Isom, chief operating officer of American Airlines. “She is a passionate advocate for her employees and for Miami-Dade County and we are thrilled to make this donation to St. Thomas University in her honor."

Catholic Hospice is proud and honored to congratulate Katharine Cue-Fuente in being honored as one of the 13 Women of Distinction in South Florida. A true leader and community advocate, Cue-Fuente has been a part of the Catholic Hospice family for over three years and has been a dynamic and essential member of the marketing and community outreach for Catholic Hospice. She has been at the forefront of communicating Catholic Hospices message throughout Miami-Dade and helps find funding for Catholic Hospice’s community programs like Camp Erin, a free bereavement camp open to all children who have suffered the loss of a loved one and Wishes Granted, a special program that helps grant patients their last wish. At 28 years old, Cue-Fuente is a leader in marketing and public relations for South Florida and a true asset to the Catholic Hospice Organization. Cue-Fuente’s passion for helping others extends to her government role as a Councilwoman for the City of Hialeah, where recently she was appointed by her colleagues to serve as the youngest vice president of the City Council. “I am beyond humbled by being honored the Hispanic

KATHARINE Woman of Distinction Award. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t express that any award or accolades I receive, is due to the amazing men and women God has placed in my path who have supported and mentored me,” said Cue-Fuente. The Hispanic Women of Distinction Charity Luncheon will

Air Quality Plus opens in Miami Lakes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Air Quality Plus is a local business that began operation earlier this year, serving the residents of Miami Lakes and surrounding areas, for all needs related to indoor air quality. Owners Manny Gutierrez and Nancy Castillo collaborated together on this business and Gutierrez works out of their office in Doral although the nature of the work takes the business all over Miami-Dade to assess and treat poor air quality. Most homeowners don’t consider air quality until their air conditioner needs repair and usually A/C repairmen will offer filtration services to clean out vents throughout the home. Air Quality Plus differs in this regard because they are a company solely focused

on air quality without any agenda to sell an air conditioning unit as most businesses do. Some of the services offered include air duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, sanitizing air ducts, servicing HEPA filters, UV light unit installation, and thermostat replacements and upgrades. Overlooking air quality in the home can lead to exacerbation of allergies and asthma. “Most people don’t do maintenance on their air quality, they don’t replace ducts,” said Gutierrez. “Health issues arising from contamination is something that people overlook.” With video inspections, the professionals at Air Quality Plus are able to show homeowners the dust, dirt and debris that has sometimes been left sitting since con-

Resident Nicole McGrath endures year in Antarctica Summer is almost here but one Miami Lakes resident won’t be complaining about the heat. Nicole McGrath, a lifelong resident and Hialeah Miami Lakes High School alumni, is working at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, where a nice day means temperatures hover around 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Now in her ninth month of a yearlong contract, McGrath is part of the support staff wintering at McMurdo Station until the austral summer begins in October. McMurdo Station is the largest of three research year-round stations within the U.S. Antarctic Program, which is managed by the National Science Foundation. The program carries forward the nation’s goals of supporting a cutting-edge scientific presence in the Antarctic, fulfilling the nation’s obligations as a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty, fostering cooperative research with other nations, and protecting the Antarctic environment. During the austral summer, the sun is above the horizon 24 hours a day and the continent comes alive with seals, penguins and other wildlife creatures. The population hits its peak and scientists, along with support staff,

race to conduct as much science as possible before the sun sets. This past summer, McGrath worked as an air transportation specialist, moving cargo on and off the continent. Her work even brought her to Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, located at the geographic South Pole. In March, McGrath and her fellow “winter-overs” said good-bye to the last flight of summer, staying behind to mind the station and do any needed repairs. Only a few weeks later, the sun dipped below the horizon, not to be seen again until August. After the sun disappeared, temperatures steadily dropped and wildlife sightings stopped altogether. Even though getting around station requires regularly going outside, McGrath’s winter job in Operations Supply allows her to spend more time indoors. This is good news since she’s already experienced temperatures in the negative sixties and it hasn’t hit the dead of winter yet. Despite the darkness and the cold, the winter also brings many beautiful experiences. Brightly colored auroras, also known as the Southern Lights, We Can Help Your Business

light up the night sky and the stars shine like nowhere else in the world. Plus “winter-overs” form a tight-knit community since the station population stays around 150 people all season. It doesn’t hurt that McGrath’s fiancé, who she met in Antarctica, is with her and they plan on getting married when they return home. Besides her wedding and seeing her family, the things she looks forward to the most about going home include seeing trees, eating fresh food and walking outside in flip-flops.

Proposed county amendment would allow citizens to copy public records A proposed amendment to the Miami-Dade County Charter would give the public the right under the county’s Citizens’ Bill of Rights to copy public records and the right to inspect them, according to the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust. On June 7, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved the proposal initiated by the Ethics Commission which will go before voters during the November 8 election. The Citizens’ Bill of Right, which specifically covers only the inspection of public records, was incorporated as part of the county charter when it was adopted in 1957, long before the common use

of duplication equipment and processes. In 2012, voters gave the Ethics Commission the power to enforce provisions of the Citizens’ Bill of Rights. The proposed charter amendment, would extend its public records provision to the right to copy county and municipal records consistent with Florida Public Records law, and empower the Ethics Commission to enforce the expanded provision. Before county commissioners adopted the amendment to place on the ballot, six public hearing on the charter questions were held throughout Miami-Dade and answered by county staff. “Once the simple amendment

was explained, no one turned out to oppose it,” said Joseph Centorino, executive director of the Ethics Commission. “I hope we can get the word out that passage of this proposal will benefit those who seek public records by enabling the Ethics Commission to provide an additional avenue for the enforcement of public record violations. It aligns the rights in the charter with those already enforced by state law.” The Ethics Commission was created in 1996 as an independent agency with advisory and quasijudicial powers, It is composed of five members, serving staggered terms of four years each.

Pace grad, alumni drafted by Major League teams By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Just two weeks after his high school graduation from Pace High School, right-handed ace pitcher Christopher Rodriguez was drafted 126th overall in the fourth round of the MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels on June 10. The following day on June 11, Alex Mateo, a Pace alumnus from the Class of 2012, was drafted in the 22nd round of the MLB Draft

by the Miami Marlins. Rodriguez helped lead the Pace Spartans baseball team all the way to the 2016 FHSAA Class 5A State Finals. He finished his high school career by pitching a 1-0 two-hit shutout against Orlando Bishop Moore in the Class 5A state semifinal. He was named the 2016 6A2A Pitcher of the Year at The Miami Herald’s All-Dade Athletic Awards and was also named to the The Miami Herald’s 2016 All-

Dade First Team after recording 85 strikeouts and a 0.33 ERA in 2016. Mateo graduated from Nova Southeastern University this year and helped lead the Sharks to their first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship as one of their top pitchers. He earned a 2.96 ERA and struck out 96 hitters in his 2016 season and was named the 2016 Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Former Miami Dolphin Olivier Vernon is now a New York Giant By The Miami Laker staff Miami Dolphins fans might feel a little strange watching former defensive end Olivier Vernon in a New York Giants uniform for the upcoming season. But for Vernon, his heart will always be in Miami where his roots lie. He graduated from American High School and played at the University of Miami, and the Dolphins selected him in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft. Playing for his hometown team was a dream well-founded but an offer that made him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history sent him to New York, breaking ties with his tropical upbringing for a city where the temperature can drop below zero on game day in December. Vernon, who played four seasons with the Dolphins, signed a five-year, $85 million contract

OLIVIER VERNON ($52.5 million guaranteed). In his first four seasons with Miami, Vernon earned $3.68 million. With New York, he’ll earn $29 million in his first year. “Despite the possible chance of snow, I think I’ll be okay,” Vernon told reporters the day he signed his contract with the Giants. “I would

not mind trying to shovel it myself.” The Dolphins, who finished last season with a 6-10 record and missed the postseason for the sixth consecutive season, has to fill a void left by Vernon’s departure. In his four seasons with the Dolphins, Vernon recorded 194 tackles, 29 sacks and forced four fumbles. His career highlight came in his rookie season against the New York Jets when he scored his first NFL touchdown by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone. Vernon said he’s so grateful for the opportunity to play for his childhood team. “I appreciate the opportunity I was given by the Dolphins Organization to stay in my hometown and play for a great city,” he said. “But now it’s time to take this next step and be a part of something different.”

CHRISTOPHER RODRIGUEZ, a Pace High School Class of 2016 graduate, was drafted in the fourth round of the MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels on June 10.

ALEX MATEO, a 2012 alumnus of Pace High School and a 2016 alumnus of Nova Southeastern University, was drafted in the 22nd round of the MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins.

Mater Academy’s middle school baseball team wins third championship

MATER ACADEMY MIDDLE SCHOOL’S baseball team won its third consecutive Miami-Dade Middle School League Championship in a postseason tournament in May at the Grapeland Water Park. The victory represented the Lions’ third consecutive championship for the junior varsity team, making the group of seventh and eighth graders among the best of their peers in Miami-Dade County. Some members of the team will play varsity baseball starting next season in hopes of helping Mater Academy win the district championship and reach regional competition enroute to the state tournament.

Barbara Goleman 10th grader, Ryan Campos, visits Town Hall as honorary Mayor for Day Ryan Campos, a 10th grade-student at Barbara Goleman Senior High, served as Miami Lakes honorary Mayor for a Day on June 24 at Town Hall. He was selected by Mayor Michael Pizzi for his various engagements in community service including as a member of the Miami Lakes Youth Center Council. Campos checked out the Mayor’s chair on the dais and then visited the Mayor’s office. “The first thing I did was visit the Police Department and I was able to see all of their equipment and even sat inside a Police car to use the siren,” said Campos. “Then I visited the Town Manager’s office and I learned about what exactly they do and how it affects the community.

After that I visited with the IT staff and saw the computer system that runs all the technology in Town Hall. “The last place I visited was the Building Department where I learned that you need a permit to complete almost any construction project at your home. “I thought it was an amazing experience and I hope I can come back again,” Campos said. “Everything that I learned today was interesting and I hope I can use this knowledge in the future.” Campos is the grandson of the late Sergio Campos, who was president of the Loch Ness Homeowners Association for many years.

Mater Academy’s Willie Abreu selected in MLB draft by Rockies Baseball players who graduated from local schools were taken in last month’s MLB amateur draft, the first step of fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing in the pros. University of Miami and former Mater Academy outfielder Willie Abreu was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the sixth round of the draft.

As a junior, Abreu registered a .283 batting average, 127 hits, 75 RBI and seven home runs. He was named to the 2016 Coral Gables Regional AllTournament Team, All-ACC Third Team in 2016, 2015, and 2014. At Mater Academy, Abreu ranked No. 66 in the nation, named Rawlings Preseason All-

American prior to his senior season, where he led the Lions in batting average with .513, 34 runs, four triples and six dingers. He earned The Miami Herald’s First Team All-Dade recognition his senior year and was selected to play in the 2012 Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Spanish Lake alumni visit with 5th grade graduates Spanish Lake Elementary fifth grade teacher, Lesley Caraballo, implemented a new program at the school in an effort to link graduates to graduating seniors at Miami-Dade County schools who also attended SLE. The school first opened its doors in 2007 and with the launch of this program seniors

have returned to their alma mater to speak about their experiences and plans after graduation. The program took place the last week of school. Sebastian Salas, a Miami Lakes Educational Center student and one of SLE’s founding fifth graders returned to speak to stu-

dents with his friend and business partner, Erick Rivera. After SLE, Sebastian continued his education at Lawton Chiles Middle School and then moved to Miami Lakes Educational Center where he met Rivera. Both boys were enrolled in the engineering program.

They motivated and inspired each other to create a business. Salas and Rivera are now the proud owners of WunderThought, a 3D printing company for creative innovation. The students just recently designed the school uniforms for incoming classes at

MLEC. Salas will continue his education in engineering at the University of Florida and Rivera will continue his education at Miami-Dade College. Their business will continue online.

Pace High students attend Marist Youth Gathering By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Lakesr Since 2001, Pace High School has been sending Spartans to the Marist Youth Gathering, an annual gathering for high school students

from Marist schools across North America. Pace students Keanu Orfano, Cortni-Ann Palmer, Keylin McNeal, Juliana Quintero, and Hector Santa Maria all made the

trip this year to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, over Memorial Day weekend. They were chaperoned by Alex Gomez, a Pace Class of 2011 alumnus, who attended the Marist Youth

Gathering as a freshman in 2008. “We attend to grow in Marist spirituality and identity, and to grow in community with other Marist schools,” said Gomez. He described the Marist spirituality as one of action and putting one’s faith to work. The gathering focused on activities that allowed the Pace students to meet and grow together as a community with fellow Marist students, along with lectures from many keynote speakers including Rev. Paul Frechette, the Provincial for Marists in the United States, who spoke about making dreams a reality. While the students were familiar with the spirituality and sensi-

bilities taught to them at Pace, attending the gathering allowed them to learn about how others approach their faith and how they can teach others about Marist sensibilities. Gomez said that the most memorable moment of the trip for him was the opening prayer for all of the students at the start of each day. He and the students were surprised that it was the same opening prayer said at the beginning of every Pace school day. They were moved to hear all the Marist schools and missionary communities repeat the prayer, giving them a deeper sense of unity with their fellow Marists.

St. Thomas law student Betsy Rincon travels to Cuba as part of the school’s Elder Law Society By The Miami Laker staff Helping Cuban citizens through difficult situations related to the U.S. Cuban embargo can be challenging, but very rewarding for an attorney. St. Thomas Law student, Betsy Vázquez de Rincón, learned the reality of it, first-hand, while traveling to Cuba with Elder Law Adjunct professor and attorney Enrique Zamora recently. The trip was coordinated in conjunction with the law school's Elder Law Society, of which Zamora serves as the faculty adviser. Through professor Zamora’s eyes and his 22 years of experience legally representing Cuban heirs with interests in the

estates of decedents in the United States, Rincón described the trip as unforgettable. The four-person legal team consisted of Cuban-American attorneys, Enrique Zamora, Manny Hillman, Yaniel Cantelar and Rincón. They were working with Bufete Internacional, a law firm authorized to work with foreign attorneys on legal matters including probate. On the first day, at the break of dawn, the Cuban heirs were already scattered outside of the Bufete building. As these families lined up, they had a look on their faces as if they were searching for a glimmer of hope. That glimmer of hope was the experienced team

of attorneys working in conjunction with the Bufete’s in-house staff and its team of legal professionals. Everyone was eager to find solutions to these cases. What started as a list of 18 cases, quickly broadened into 35 cases by the end of the day. The cases typically involved money, estates, jewels, insurance policies and stocks that belong to Cubans who lived in the United States, and whose heirs in Cuba could not easily receive because of the embargo regulations. At times there were disappointments because nothing could be done legally. However, more often than not there were happy endings and sometimes even tears of joy. "There are no words to express the happiness that I felt watching the client’s facial expressions when all the documents were properly explained and executed and they were ready to receive their rightful inheritance," stated Rincón. The Cuban heirs would receive their money by way of periodic remittances made through Western Union. The Cuban Assets Control Regulations restricted remittances for Cuban nationals. However, in 2009, President Barack Obama softened the restrictions to Cuban nationals, including those with Cuban Blocked Accounts pursuant to an inheritance. As the policy now stands, if a CBA owner is a Cuban national residing in Cuba and can demon-

strate that they are a close relative of the decedent from whom they inherited funds, as defined under the regulations, then they qualify for an unlimited amount of remittance. “I glanced over to professor Zamora and saw a twinkle in his eyes as he spoke to the clients knowing how rewarding it is for him to help others in need," she said. "Right then and there I knew now what my mission in life was to be.”

MLEC alumni and CNN corresondent Boris Sanchez talks to journalism students By Dru Barcelo and Daniela Morales Special to The Miami Laker Boris Sanchez, his voice booming, brows bold, arms crossed, eyes peeled. The correspondent and anchor for CNN visited Miami Lakes Educational Center, his old time high school, to visit the Journalism class, giving insight on his road to an Emmy and journalistic success. “Be realistic,” Sanchez said, “I’m here to crush dreams,” he added, stressing the importance of hard work, sacrifice and luck. He interacted with the class, asked questions, and challenged them to think. Why report? Why write? Why investigate? He asked. At the core of journalism, he said, is “Truth”. The job of a journalist is to inform people and to provide information, hoping that it will lead to change; change, he said, results from votes that could possible influence our democracy. During his time at MLEC, Sanchez said he wished he had some of the opportunities and the foundation available to students now, such as an understanding of history and the knowledge of logical fallacies, emphasizing that they are key tools needed for the occupation of journalism. These tools feed curiosity. And a journalist “needs to have a relentless thirst for knowledge,” he said. His advice, however, was not limited to journalism. Whatever career path students choose, he said, “devote yourself to your craft.” From passion – to learn, succeed, improve — comes a desire to be great. “There are people like myself that have a relentless pursuit of greatness.” His just so happened to be Journalism.

As an example, Sanchez, a Miami Heat fan, spoke passionately about his favorite player Alonzo Mourning. “He overcame all odds. The doctors told him he would never play again. But he pushed and pushed and made a return to the 2006 NBA as a Heat player to play in the finals,” Sanchez explained. Like Mourning, Sanchez did what no one else would – he worked harder than everyone around him, and it paid off. After graduating from MLEC in 2004, then Miami-Dade College, and finally Syracuse, he truly worked hard to get to where he is now. Sanchez’s career began in Redding, California, working for ABC, then down to down to Denver to work for FOX, then to where he is now, New York, as a correspondent for CNN. Still he said, in his heart, he wished to return to Miami and to his roots. And this offer came “at the right time.” His grandfather, who inspired his family’s love of justice and democracy, passed away in January. His sister is expecting twins. “Not only was this the best offer I’ve had to work in Miami,” he said, “but it also came at a time when there good reasons to be closer to home.” “Before I was born, I was initially predisposed to fight for democracy,” he said, as he and his parents are from Cuba, a communist country. It is part of what motivates his drive for life, including his thirst for greatness. Now that drive has brought him home, where it all started, where he will undoubtedly continue his “relentless pursuit” of knowledge.
