Despite budget cuts, Town continues adult classes By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The adult satellite classes hosted by Miami-Dade Public Schools have been a part of Miami Lakes since 2003. But the program, which includes Tai Chi, Yoga, painting and arts and crafts, was placed on the state’s chopping block and left school and town officials scrambling for funding to resume the classes that have become popular among area senior citizens and people with disabilities. After the state’s Adults with Disabilities and Senior Citizens with Disabilities Grant funding was acutely cut from the budget, Miami Lakes is seeking private funding to keep the Hialeah Adult Education Center community classes operating through July, while town and school officials seek a permanent solution to underwrite the program when it returns from the break in

September. At a July 6 special meeting at Town Hall, Council members approved Mayor Michael Pizzi’s recommendation to seek private dollars to help run the program for the month of July, or he would write a personal check to cover the expenses if Miami Lakes can’t find any suitable donors. It would cost $2,500 to fund the classes for July according to Town Manager Alex Rey. Rey confirmed the classes were restarted on Monday, July 13. The mayor said School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman and Schools Superintended Alberto M. Carvalho are exploring a longterm solution for funding, while Miami Lakes looks for the money in the town’s budget for next year. Among the 188 participants in the classes at the Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 Montrose Road, about 60 percent of them are Miami Lakes resi-

dents, Rey said. He said the outside residents are from Hialeah and nearby unincorporated communities. Lawmakers said it’s unfair that town tax dollars pay for non-residents to take the classes and requested they should pay for the courses themselves. Rey said as part of the agreement with the School Board, the money used to fund the classes pay for all residents living in Miami-Dade, but Miami Lakes can charge people living in Broward County. “We can talk to Hialeah and the county and ask them to subsidize their residents,” Rey said. Rey said the $2,500 covers the instructors’ fees for a certain number of hours per week and miscellaneous costs on a monthly basis. The Adults with Disabilities program with the Department of Education Division of Vocational Rehabilitation was appropriated $750,000 for next year by the Florida Legislature, down from the annual amount of $10 million that was included in Governor Rick Scott’s recommended budget. The severe cut in funding left the adult community classes throughout the state of Florida in jeopardy. With far less money, Hialeah Adult Education Center principal Manny Gonzalez told Miami Lakes the classes were canceled beginning July 6. Councilmember Tony Lama said the program seems to be targeted each year for no apparent reason. “Each year, someone is trying to chip away at the classes little by little by cutting the funding for a program which is important to everyone,” he said. “It’s not only for seniors but adults with disabilities.” Vice Mayor Manny Cid said, “We want to make sure our seniors are taking care of, especially our disabled population.”

County Property Appraiser invites residents to attend a one-on-one meeting July 30 Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser Pedro J. Garcia is inviting Miami Lakes residents to meet one-on-one with his staff to review their exemption status and have their questions or concerns addressed. The event is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. Attendees may qualify for additional benefits that could help reduce their taxes. As the guest speaker at the March Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon, Garcia said during his first stint as property appraiser from 2008 to 2012, he often had to give the mayor and county commissioners bad news about Miami-Dade’s estimates of taxable values. This year, he said it’s brighter. “This year, I should have some good news,” he said. The countywide taxable value for 2015 is $230,429,191,490, a 9.4 percent increase from 2014. “For the first time since 2007, every municipality in MiamiDade County has seen a value increase,” Garcia said in announcing the July 1 preliminary certification of taxable values for 2015. The taxable values allows the

taxing authorities, such as county government, municipal governments, the Miami-Dade School Boad and Children’s Trust, to commence the preparation for their budget for next year and adopt property tax rates. Among the cities that experienced the most significant value increase in 2015 were Sunny Isles Beach (16.7 percent), El Portal (15.4 percent), Key Biscayne (15.3 percent), Miami Beach (13.3 percent), Miami (13.1 percent), Surfside (12.4 percent) and Indian Creek (12.0 percent). Property values increases stemmed from new commercial and condos construction. Among Miami-Dade’s 36 cities, Miami Lakes is at No. 32 with a 4.5 percent increase ($2,691,096,427) in property values from 2014. The Notice of Proposed Property Taxes (TRIM Notice) will be mailed out by August 24, which will provide property owners with detailed property tax and exemption benefits information. council members, on a 5-0 vote, acted on the recommendation from the Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee to ask the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to conduct an inquiry on the June 15 accident that occurred at N.W. 140 Street and 82 Avenue. Councilmember Tony Lama was absent. Roberto Alonso Jr., the committee’s chairperson, said more than 25 residents attended the group’s meeting in late June and requested the probe to seek answers and a complete transparency of Florida law for hit-and-run accidents. “The committee wants this review in order to understand the law in an effort to provide guidance and education to our residents, Alonso said at the special council meeting flanked by members of the Public Safety Committee. “This is critical to our committee as the role of the Public Safety Committee is to educate our community on safety issues and there is much confusion due to the cur-

rent circumstances. Alonso said state law requires individuals involved in an accident to notify the police and failure to do so results in a second degree misdemeanor. The violation can carry up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. “As a committee, we must now educate the residents on what to do in the event of an accident, Alonso said. “Should they stay on the scene or leave, and if they leave will there be consequences. The independent review request stemmed from the contentious accident when Mayor Michael Pizzi claimed he swerved to avoid hitting an animal and crashed his 2014 Kia into a tree without calling the police, according to a Miami-Dade police report. A security guard on duty near the vicinity heard the crash and saw someone running from the scene and called the police, but the driver was missing and blood was discovered on the airbag, which promoted traffic homicide officers to respond to the area. Pizzi returned to the accident scene with a baseball cap on his head, the police said. According to Miami-Dade Police Lt. John Jenkins, Pizzi was the only person in the vehicle and he refused medical treatment. The police department, however, took some heat because officers didn’t give Pizzi a citation for leaving the scene of an accident or given a breathalyzer test to determine if he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Jenkins said the officers fol-

lowed the proper protocol and the mayor was cooperative during the traffic accident investigation, which is ongoing. Some Miami Lakes residents took exception to the way the police handled the accident case, indicating the mayor used his political power to shun the citation and a breathalyzer test. Despite being advised by the town attorney to recuse himself from the meeting, Pizzi chose to chair a portion of the meeting involving public comments following which he turned the gavel over to Vice Mayor Manny Cid. “I have nothing to hide, he said. “But if my colleagues want to vote for an investigation, go right ahead. Some residents said the request for an FDLE investigation was politically motivated; others questioned why Pizzi ran from the scene and to a friend’s house for treatment with a fire station and hospital nearby. Increasing their concerns was the WFOR Channel 4 news report by Gary Nelson, who questioned Pizzi during the town’s hurricane preparedness event at Costco. Pizzi told Nelson he had no recollection of dining at Cancun Grill before the accident albeit the restaurant’s manager saying he was there. Pizzi claimed he was at Town Hall meeting with constituents. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre, who called the special meeting, said the investigation request was not a political attack on the mayor. “There were too many inconsis-

tencies in this story, said Mestre, a former police officer. “Why did you leave the scene? Why did you run? Enough people in this town deserve an answer. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter, said when motorists are involved in a traffic accident they must remain at the scene. “Was the mayor injured or hurt bad and a fire station was near, Rodriguez said. “That was a concern for me. Councilmember Tim Daubert said Miami-Dade Police Director J.D. Patterson told him he didn’t mind an FDLE investigation after meeting with him about his department’s investigation into Pizzi’s accident. “I believe, myself, nor the residents wouldn’t trust his department, said Daubert, who was a military policeman and a certified traffic accident investigator by Northwestern University. “He [Patterson] said it’s fine with him of having another law enforcement agency to investigate what happened at that accident. Some residents say the request for a probe was a lack of faith in the town’s police department. “It’s an absolute disgrace to question the integrity of our police officers for political reasons, Pizzi said before he left the meeting. But Councilmember Frank Mingo suggested otherwise. “We want to make sure we have the answers, he said. “We’re not questioning the police because they did everything they could do.

‘The Bend’ becomes modern day upscale version of former area lounge

Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday from August 7 to 16

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff It seems fitting that the restoration of a former classic hotspot, Our Place Lounge and Liquors at 6844 N.W. 169 Street just north of Miami Lakes, would fall into the laps of former patrons and current architects to be transformed into The Bend Lounge. The renovation of this laid back classic was the brainchild of Mauricio Lacayo and Orlando Lamas, affectionately known by their staff and regulars as Mo and Landy, who frequented the original “Our Place Lounge” in their youth. Lacayo and Lamas, both architects and partners for their architecture and design firm, Fortis Lamas Architects, and construction company, Three County Construction, reinvigorated the formerly derelict bar with their talents in design and love for modernized bars with roots in tradition. The Bend Lounge opened in February and was named after the big bend on the Palmetto that sits right behind the lounge. Since its opening, the lounge has already been named as Best Bar, West, by the Miami New Times as part of a reader-voted award. The Bend’s appeal for those young and young at heart seems to be a running motif throughout the lounge’s design and menu. The renovations, aimed to breathe new life into a neighborhood classic, give no impression of kitschy throwbacks and instead artfully cultivates nostalgia through impeccable design. The wood paneling and vinyl armrests on the bar combined with local craft beer and youthful crowd together create a harmony of old and new. Even the music playing overhead runs the gamut between the 70’s American rock

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Miami Lakes launches new app – ‘Lakes Life Mobile’ Have you ever driven over a pot hole, or walked over a broken sidewalk and wanted to report it, but just didn’t have the time? “Lakes Life Mobile” now enables residents to submit service requests such as pot holes and sidewalk damage right from their phone. Simply take a picture and the app will find the location. The request is immediately routed to the appropriate department, and the person submitting the item will be notified the instant it is received and resolved. Residents can also sign up to receive event reminders and traffic and weather alerts. This new award-winning mobile app, proposed by Councilmember Tony Lama, can be used on all Apple and Android products. With the app, the town looks to boost citizen interaction, improve efficiency, and help increase response times for resident and business requests. “This initiative is about transparency, accountability, and better communication with our residents,” said Lama. “As a council member, it allows me to better understand where we are doing well and what areas need improvements. For example, an increased number of requests from

a particular park will help us reevaluate how we are delivering services. Is it an issue with a contractor? Are we understaffed? Should we augment services? This provides us tremendous oversight.” With 90 percent of the population toting a cell phone, and more than half using a smartphone, the phone is quickest way to connect. “We also need to be aware of the changing demographics,” Lama said. “Millennials will soon have a tremendous amount of buying power. We want to attract them to Miami Lakes by providing them channels of engagement they don’t get in other municipalities.” “Lakes Life” also allows users to access the Town of Miami Lakes Marketplace, a tool for residents and visitors to discover the many services locally-owned businesses provide which makes Miami Lakes a special community with a “hometown” feel. “Lakes Life” users can also access the Town’s online business director, track the Town’s Moover busses in real-time, and much more. For more information about the app, visit www.LakesLifeMobile. com for downloading instruction and a video tutorial of the apps many features.

Officers on duty will patrol the area and keep an eye on the residences. For more information, or to issue a Watch Order, contact the Police Department at 305-8274020.

YEARS EXPERIENCE

Record year for Farm Share includes food for 500 families at Lakes event Farm Share Incorporated announced a record-breaking year of recovering and distributing 32,804,399 pounds of food and serving more than 4,000,000 households across Florida. Miami Lakes town officials, County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., State Representatives Manny Diaz Jr., Jose Oliva, Frank Artiles and Byran Avila, and State Senator Rene Garcia, all played a big part of the organization’s success from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015, by hosting a Farm Share food distribution event in May at the Miami-Dade Northwest District police station in Miami Lakes. Artiles has been setting up Farm Share events throughout the state of Florida as well. The elected officials and 100 volunteers distributed food and other goods to more than 500 fam-

ilies thanks to the coordinated effort by those who wanted to feed hungry families. Diaz directed traffic, while passing out corn and tomatoes and greeted many of the families that were waiting in line. “Farm Share does a wonderful job with these food distribution events,” Diaz said at the event. “This means a lot to the families in our communities.” Garcia was also on hand to pass out food, as his volunteering work to feed needy families reflected one of his goals as a state senator, as well as Avila, who ordered pizza for all the volunteers. Town Councilmember Frank Mingo was also unloading boxes of fresh food and fresh corn. “This is a great for the Town of Miami Lakes,” Mingo said. “It’s great to see everyone pull together to help out our residents.”

Farm Share has been feeding hungry families and preventing millions of pounds of food from going to waste since 1991. Farm Share is the only major food bank in Florida that does not charge the agency network consisting of church food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, senior centers, and community centers for any of the food provided. All of the recovered food, including an abundant supply of fresh vegetables, is distributed to the community free of charge. The food distribution in Miami Lakes was put together with the help of the Florida Department of Children and Families and Oliva. For more information about Farm Share or to donate, visit: www.farmshare.org or contact Kristen King Jaiven at 305.246.3276 or by email to kristen@farmshare.org.

This campy musical comedy, under the direction of Vanessa Elise, takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijua-

na, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. The musical features lyrics by Kevin Murphy and music by Dan Studney. Reefer Madness is a satire of the 1936 American exploitation film of the same name. The 1936 film (originally titled Tell Your Children) was financed by a church group, who intended it to be shown to parents

Miami-Dade may increase rates for special taxing districts in local area Due to a flawed accounting system that led to under billing for special taxing districts administered by Miami-Dade, Miami Lakes and Palm Springs North are among the many cities and unincorporated areas that may face rate increases next year to offset $2 million for security guard gate, lighting and public works services. Among the 1,068 special taxing districts administered in 2016, 234 of them could see a hike. Last month, county commissioners called town hall meetings in their respective districts to explain the rate increases to their

constituents in a prelude to a public hearing at County Hall, where Mayor Carlos Gimenez apologized for the mix up and said an initial audit discovered the financial gap after the former director of the taxing-district division was removed and the agency was reorganized. The rate increases will generate an additional $4.3 million in 2016, which is 35 percent more than the $11.9 million that residents in the special taxing districts would owe without the new fees, the mayor said. The possible rate increases for Miami Lakes include two special

taxing districts for guard gate services – Miami Lakes Section One, which is south of N.W. 154 Street, west of Montrose and Balgowan roads, north of Glencairn Terrace, and east of N.W. 87th Avenue; and Royal Oaks Section One, south of N.W. 169 Terrace, west of N.W. 82 Avenue, north of N.W. 160 Street and east of N.W. 87 Avenue. The possible rate increases for Miami Lakes and PSN may be modest, about $36 for the average property. County commissioners will have a final vote on the proposed rate increases in September.

Popular local restaurant, The Ranch House, has new owners By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Russell and Nick Govey, a father and son duo have partnered to take ownership of The Ranch House, located at 1548 West 84 Street in the Palm Springs Lake Plaza just south of Miami Lakes. The Ranch House has long been a staple restaurant stop for locals and in addition to the American, comfort-food style cuisine it is known for serving and will continue to serve, under the new ownership guests can expect an expanded menu and upgraded quality. The Goveys are currently working on introducing a craft beer program and have introduced appetizers in addition to their breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The Ranch House, which is a

hybrid between a diner and restaurant, has been open since 1977 and is known as the “original” ranch house. While the originality of the restaurant will stay in tact, small changes will continue to improve upon the original design. Speciality menu items are a host of steak and seafood dishes. The Ranch House now also offers over 80 different beers and a dozen wines. “It’s nice to have that customer base that has been coming here for years and we hope to continue serving them while expanding the menu for new guests,” said Nick Govey. For more information visit The Ranch House Restaurant Co. online on Facebook or call 305821-8200.

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Even coming off of their highly successful 2014-2015 season where they went all the way to the regional finals, Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s boys basketball team has stayed busy in the summer with trips to universities across the Southeast and the basketball Spartan Boot Camp in June. All of this summer activity is common for the Spartans, according to their head coach Anthony Serro. He explained that the camps and university tournaments allowed for off-season adjustments after the graduation of key players and for new players to get acclimated to their team. The Spartans basketball team was invited for the second straight year to a camp held by Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. After touring the Stetson campus and having several of its players take part in an elite camp, the team played in a weekend-long tourna-

ment, winning several games against teams from high schools across the Southeastern United States. After returning home, the team began running two weeks of the basketball Spartan Boot Camp for campers ages 6 through 15. Pace coaches and the players themselves taught campers and led them through fun basketball activities, ending each day with a prayer of “Our Father” and chanting “Family!” together. The camp, now in its fourth year, has always attracted many passionate young campers. “I’ve never seen a group of kids who wanted to play as much as these campers these past two weeks,” said Serro. The Spartans hit the road again for a camp at the University of South Carolina from June 13-14. On the drive up, they stopped at the University of North Florida to get a campus tour and meet with the UNF basketball coaching staff. At USC, the team won numerous games in a tournament stacked

with elite high school teams invited by the university. The final destination for the players was Gainesville for an invite-only camp at the University of Florida. The Spartans learned about the history of the two-time NCAA National Champion Gators before playing in their last tournament of the summer. The Spartans ran wild on other high school teams, making it all the way to the tournament finals for their best performance of the off-season. The Spartan players say they have already seen the fruits of their summer labor pay off. “Everyone on the team is getting time to shine,” said Pace junior Zackery Alvarez. “We’re playing more as a team.” After all of this hard work, Serro says that he expects his 2015-2016 team to have another great season and lead the state of Florida in scoring for a third straight year.

Goleman student receives 4th annual Coach Rick Quintanilla scholarship Darnell Flucker, a student at Barbara Goleman Senior High School, was named recipient of the Coach Rick Quintanilla Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to football players who not only play well on the field, but also show honor, courage and

commitment. In the face of adversity, Flucker pressed on and continued attending practices all the while coping with his mother’s illness, a blood clot in her lung. “We are so proud to hand out the 4th Annual Coach Rick Scholarship award, and this year it went to a young man that exemplifies what this award is all about,” said Coach John Murillo, father of the late Rick Quintanilla. “Today, Darnell’s mom is doing much bet-

ter. I truly believe Darnell Flucker will go on to do something special in the world and honor the legacy of Rick Quintanilla.” Flucker will be reporting to Webber International University this fall where he will continue his studies and go on to play football. For those interested in contributing to the scholarship, contact Coach John Murrillo at 305975-8963.

Next season, the Little Giants will be moving to a new league and division. The younger kids on the team will stay down in 8-and-under, while the older kids will move up to 9-and-under-kid-pitch in the Premier Travel League. Miami Lakes Fencing Club rates in Sunshine State Games The Miami Lakes Fencing Club features competitors who practice three days a week at Miami Lakes Methodist Church, 14800 Ludlam Road. The group recently competed in the Sunshine State Games in West Palm Beach, where head coach and trainer Javier Andino and assistant coach Gary Cardenas led their team to a good rating for overall performance during the tournament. “Our youngest club member is 9 years old and our most senior is over 70,” Cardenas. “We are a competitive club and have traveled throughout Florida for tournaments. We have even been to Puerto Rico and El Salvador to compete in international events. “Next year, we are targeting to make it to one of the National tournaments that are held throughout the United States by the U.S. Fencing Association, which is the governing body for the sport in the U.S.” One of the group’s brightest young stars is Alex Cardenas, Gary Cardenas’ son, who has been focused on epee as his primary weapon and has been winning medals consistently over the past three years. This past year, he turned 13 and was able to compete in open events, which are comprised of fencers of all ages (above 13) and skill levels. “He is currently focusing on obtaining his first national ranking in epee,” Cardenas said. Fencers are rated in one of 6

categories which are A, B, C, D, E, and U, with U unclassified and A being the highest rating attainable. “I am primarily focused on epee and gained my E rating in 2014, but I also actively practice and compete in foil and saber as well. I am classified as U in those weapons, but have won medals in all three weapons in unrated events,” Alex Cardenas said. “We are one of a few pairs of parentchild fencers in the South Florida area, so it's a unique sport in the fact that it offers an opportunity for both parent and child to train and compete alongside and sometimes against each other. You won't find that in baseball, football and soccer.” The Miami Lakes Fencing Club hosts five tournaments a year in Miami Lakes with the next one scheduled for Sunday, October 18 and Sunday, November 22 at the Roberto Alonso Community Center at Royal Oaks Park, 16500 N.W. 87 Avenue. Last year, the first event drew almost 100 fencers from throughout Florida, as well as some that traveled in from Puerto Rico and Columbia. Coach Andino is a certified member of the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association and has competed on the national team for his home country of Honduras. The Miami Lakes Fencing Club practices on Monday, Tuesday and Fridays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church.

Did You Know? Fio Marquez’ random acts of kindness! By Amanda Berengeur Special to The Miami Laker The thought of a stranger passing out thank-you cards for people simply being themselves is pleasantly out of the ordinary, but for 23-year-old Miami Lakes resident Fiorella Marquez, random acts of kindness like this are just stepping stones on her journey towards making positive impacts on peoples lives. Marquez, known affectionately as Fio, has a degree in psychology and is currently working on her second degree in sociology. Fueled by her deep passion for knowledge and helping others, Marquez has dedicated herself to the mission of boosting confidence and self-worth. Whether it be a child of eight-years-old or an adult of 30, Marquez aims to make a difference in peoples lives. Along with her full time schooling, Marquez has managed to build an online community focused on the betterment of oneself through their own eyes. Her goal is to be that shoulder you can lean on, that voice of wisdom that reminds you that though tough times may come, there is a light at the end of every tunnel. Why is Marquez so dedicated to her cause? It wasn’t long ago that she was made to believe she had no purpose in life. Struggling with depression, Marquez was teased and harassed by those who she believed to be closest to her. On her website, FioEffect.com, she recounts her hardships in detail. For almost a year she would

One way residents can save water and money is to take advantage of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department’s free evaluations of single family homes’ irrigation systems. FIORELLA MARQUEZ Miami Lakes restaurants and handed out thank-you cards to strangers. The cards had words of encouragement such as “You are strong,” “You matter,” “You're worth it,” and “You are beautiful.” She handed these notes of optimism to nurses and waiters and even left some on cars in parking lots. Her goal was to make as many people feel as appreciated as she could, an act of kindness she plans on repeating. Marquez’s list of goals is quite vast and includes traveling the world as a motivational speaker, becoming a mental health counselor for children and getting her doctoral degree, just to name a few. Marquez believes that although bad things may happen, there is always a positive outlook on life and every day she strives to reach her message of love and understanding to all who are willing to listen.

M-D Water/Sewer Dept. promotes July as ‘Smart Irrigation Month’ The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is helping county residents save water and money by celebrating July as Smart Irrigation Month. July is a peak time for outdoor water use, making it the perfect time to promote efficient water use. “This July, take a few minutes to identify ways that you and your family can become more water

receive phone calls, e-mails, and text messages from her peers calling her ugly, fat and worthless. “I began to think I was going insane, I blamed everything on myself, I began to convince myself that I deserved every single bad thing that was happening to me,” recounts Marquez. Despite this hardship, Marquez made it though her struggle and devoted herself into making sure no one would have to experience what she did. She started her website where people could write to her about whatever was on their minds. There was no judgement or ridicule, simply an ear to listen and an open heart to understand. As time progressed, Marquez began to get letters from her readers and other individuals who believed that her strength helped them get through their own rough times. Marquez also hosts a free support group once a month where individuals of all ages can gather and speak freely about whatever may be troubling them. Marquez also put together an event earlier this year she titled “I am Woman.” Here, she arranged for some of the ladies who had been reaching out to her to have their hair and make-up done, gave them gifts and even had a photographer take their pictures. “I’ve had low self esteem before so I thought about what would make me feel beautiful and designed the event around that,” said Marquez. In early June, Marquez went around to hospitals and local

Homeowners do not need to implement all recommendations at once to be eligible for rebates. They can implement the retrofits for what works best for their system and their budgets. Outdoor irrigation accounts for up to 50 percent of water use in Florida, and up to 50 percent of the water applied to lawns is lost to evaporation; some households may lose up to 70 gallons of water each day. In order to conserve as much water as possible, Sola said, “We must be vigilant especially when watering our lawns to make every drop count.” For more information on the irrigation program and other water conservation programs, go to www.miamidade.gov.

Monsignor Pace High School students attend Notre Dame Vision Leadership Conference By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Eight students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School became the next set of future Spartan leaders to attend Notre Dame Vision, a Catholic leadership conference for high school students held at the esteemed Notre Dame University in Indiana from June 15-19. Sofia Lama, Amy Velez, Chris Velez, Tristan Luzod, Matthew Schaffer, Joshua Felipe, Ruben Masters, and Nathan Bonet were the fifth group in as many years to be sent by Pace to the conference. They were chaperoned by Pace theology teachers Patricia Stout and Nelson Bonet, who accompanied the group on their long journey and met with them for breakfast every morning in the Notre Dame dining halls. For five days, the group spent their time with their fellow attendees living in the university’s dorm rooms and being mentored by Notre Dame undergraduates. As part of Notre Dame Vision, the group and nearly 100 other high school students from across the country took part in workshops and group discussions, performed skits and musicals, and received lectures from national-known speakers to strengthen both their

leadership skills and their relationship with God. Attendees also celebrated mass in the university’s famed Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Though Pace High has sent students to Notre Dame Vision for five consecutive years, this was the first time that incoming freshmen took the trip. Ruben Masters and Nathan Bonet, sons of Pace theology teachers Dr. David Masters and Nelson Bonet, surprised their parents by asking if they could attend the conference of their own volition. While these two students are already a part of the Pace family, Notre Dame Vision also let them grow closer to their future upperclassmen, forging bonds that will last throughout their four years at high school. One of these upperclassmen was Matthew Schaffer, a Pace sophomore, who says he joined the program since it seemed like it would be an interesting new experience. He enjoyed the conference’s very social environment most of all and found himself deeply affected by the religious experience. “I know more about God and my relationship with him because of this program,” said Schaffer.

James Parker retires after 11-year tenure at M. Lakes Education Center By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Longtime Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) principal, James V. Parker, announced the 2014-2015 school year would be his last full year as principal, having previously enrolled in the education system’s Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) which named his last working day in February 2016. A new principal has not yet been announced. Parker, a principal known for his approachable attitude and annual head-shavings when the students accomplish their consistent “A” school grade, is a man with high hopes and expectations for a school that has received seven consecutive “A” grades. When asked whether the school can continue to improve he says yes without missing a beat. “This school is a very, very good school,” said Parker. “But it can become a great school with continued improvement.” Parker has been a large part of that continuous improvement during his 11 year tenure at MLEC, steering the helm that has seen academic growth in grading and programs despite increasingly difficult standards. However, high standards are commonplace in Parker’s life. Apart from education, Parker’s career in the military for surgical technology and his work in graduate school to earn his Master’s Degree in Health Occupation

In Memoriam:

Ellen Frances Pease, 72 Former Miami Lakes resident, Ellen Frances Pease, 72, passed away peacefully at her home in Hiawassee, Georgia, on Friday July 3, surrounded by her loving family. Pease was born on December 15, 1942 in Ellenville, N.Y., daughter of the late Martin Braterman and late Molly Windreich Braterman, and stepdaughter of the late Eleanor Braterman. Pease began her career as an English teacher at Miami Beach High and continued as a Guidance Counselor, ultimately retiring from Palm Springs North Elementary School. Pease’s natural compassion and interest in people made her the confidant of many, and strangers quickly became friends. Pease and her husband, Louis, were long-time residents of Miami Lakes and members of Temple Beth Emet in Pembroke Pines. Pease remained active in Hiawassee over the years, volunteering with the town’s County Chamber of Commerce. Surviving Pease are her loving husband and best friend of 48

Pace principal Ana Garcia’s family’s Journey of Faith By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker On May 9, Bryan Garcia was ordained into the priesthood by Archbishop Thomas Wenski in a ceremony held at St. Mary Cathedral. For Father Bryan, it was the culmination of years of service towards Christ and the beginning of an even deeper relationship with God and his community. Like many Catholics, Father Bryan’s faith was nurtured at Catholic schools as he graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Hialeah in 2002 and Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami Gardens in 2006. However, Father Bryan and his family’s ties to Catholic education run even deeper. He was particularly blessed to have his parents as principals at both Immaculate and Pace. His mother, Ana Garcia, is the principal of Pace High School, a position she has held since 2004. Ana Garcia is a product of Catholic education and a Pace alumna herself from the Class of 1980. His father, Eddy Garcia, also graduated from Pace in 1980. He is currently the principal of St. Louis Covenant School in Pinecrest, where he started in 2013. Before he was the principal of Immaculate Conception School in Hialeah for 13 years. The Garcias’ influence on their children’s faith is immeasurable, especially for Father Bryan.

“My parents and grandparents were always great examples of faith and trust in God even in the face of difficulties in their lives,” said Father Bryan. “When I decided to enter seminary formation towards the priesthood, they were nothing but supportive of me and my decision to answer the Lord's call to serve him and his people.” Father Bryan says that while he gets more questions from his family now about theology and morality, he is still just “Bryan” to them. He said, “As my brother Steven often reminds me: ‘You may be ‘Father’ to everyone else. But for me, you will always be ‘brother’ first.” His siblings have also given back to the community through their faith. His older sister Jenise Garcia-Subveri, who graduated from Immaculate in 1999 and Pace in 2003, worked as a teacher at both Immaculate and St. Agnes Academy in Key Biscayne. His younger brother Steven graduated from Immaculate in 2006 and Pace in 2010. It was at Pace that he began serving as a Eucharistic minister, which he continues to do today. It’s only fitting that the day after his ordination was Mother’s Day, when Father Bryan celebrated his first ever mass at his home parish and school as a child, Immaculate Conception Church. The entire Garcia family was in attendance. He is now the parochial vicar at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Coral Springs.

Five missionaries including Brittani Garcia, Christy Piña, Jonas Erthal, Joaquin Pannunzio, and Paulina Rios were accompanied by mission leaders Raquel Lauture and Pace Campus Minister Andres Novela. The organization planned to run a summer camp for the local children. Camp days in Môle St. Nicolas were spent teaching almost 200 children different lessons from the Bible, providing meals, and playing outdoor games. Each missionary was assigned one classroom and had at least one young adult leader from the town assisting them. The group Amor En Acción (Love in Action) stayed true to its moniker by creating a safe learning environment fueled by love. “This year’s summer mission to Haiti was moving, eye-opening, and a manifestation of the universal language of love” said Rios. “Oftentimes people believe that mission trips mostly impact the people that are visited however, mission trips impact the missionaries almost as much, if not more, than the people they visit.” “The mission to Haiti was a complete success as well as an incredibly humbling experience.

THE CHILDREN of Môle St. Nicolas, Haiti, gather together for worship with former Pace students and missionaries as part of a 12-day summer camp hosted by the organization Amor en Acción. (Photo by Christy Piña) The community members of Môle Saint Nicolas were very welcoming while cooperating with us in order to ensure that the summer camp would be an amazing week for the children” said Erthal. Returning missionaries were

surprised and moved when the children remembered their names. The missionaries and the people of Môle are looking forward to next summer when they can all come together again.

Gus Machado pledges $5 million to St. Thomas’ Business School building St. Thomas University announced that prominent businessman and philanthropist Gus Machado recently pledged $5 million to the university, the single largest gift to date for the Catholic school, that would provide the cornerstone of the construction funding for the new state-of-the art School of Business building. St. Thomas alumnus and trustee and business executive Jorge Rico helped jumpstart the university’s ambitious project with a $1 million pledge. The school will recognize Machado for his contribution and business leadership by naming the new building Gus Machado School of Business at St. Thomas University. For more than 30 years, Machado has been a recognized entrepreneur, successful executive and philanthropist in the South Florida community. A former member of St. Thomas University’s Board of Trustees, Machado came to the United States from Cuba in 1949 and attended military school in North Carolina. A visionary businessman, he owned a series of car dealerships until he acquired his first franchise in 1982, Gus Machado Buick. Today, he is president of Gus Machado Ford and continues to lead his company to multi-city success. Machado, and his wife Lilliam, are a major force in Florida philanthropy, supporting many charitable organizations. “Supporting our future business leaders means the world to me,” said Machado. “Being able to

make that happen at St. Thomas University, a university that has a reputation for providing an excellent educational experience and developing the next generation of ethical business leaders – is an opportunity I am very pleased to be a part of.” The 21st century facility will house the institutes of Global Entrepreneurship, Cybersecurity Management, Trade and Logistics
