OLL kindergartners visit The Young at Art Children’s Museum Our Lady of the Lakes kindergarten classes had the opportunity to further their education in art by visiting The Young at Art Children’s Museum in Davie. During the field trip, the children were able to have a hands on learning experience to broaden

their knowledge and idea of art. The children also had the chance to visit the exhibit known as CultureScapes. This exhibit helped to bring a new understanding of the world and how culturally diverse it is through the eyes of contemporary artists from Haiti,

Latin America, Cuba, Africa, Native Americans, and Asia. The students were also able to create their very own 3-D art as well as build a puppet from recycled items.

A quick look at some of the top stories in 2016 By the Miami Laker staff In 2016, the Town of Miami Lakes got a new mayor and a new council member, the former mayor’s lawsuit against the town was dismissed, and residents approved several charter changes, among other top headline news last year. Cid becomes new town mayor in a landslide Councilmember Manny Cid defeated incumbent mayor Michael Pizzi by 77 percent of the vote in a run-off election to become the new mayor. Cid initially chose to run for his seat for District 5, but changed his

mind following a call for new leadership by his supporters. And it showed. In the general election, Cid collected 46 percent of the vote but was forced into a run-off since neither candidate garnered 51 percent to win outright. The 77 percent victory was the largest margin in the town’s history, as Cid snapped Pizzi’s undefeated streak in local elections at eight. Pizzi’s lawsuit against Miami Lakes tossed A judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by former mayor Michael Pizzi, who was seeking $2.5 mil-

lion in attorneys’ fees from the town for his federal bribery corruption trial in 2014, when a jury acquitted him, and ignited another legal battle that returned him to political office. Last month, Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Antonio Marin granted a motion to dismiss the complaint without prejudice, after determining the complaint didn’t prove that Pizzi was serving a public purpose in seeking the town’s reimbursement of his fees, among other issues. Pizzi had 20 days to amend his lawsuit against Miami Lakes, where he served as mayor for twoterms. Advocate for senior citizens wins Town Council seat Luiz Collazo, former chair of the Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee, is the new face on the town’s council, winning Seat Five, which Manny Cid gave up to run for mayor. Collazo, a 42-year-old health care administrator, collected 51 percent of the vote (6,602), while Esther Colon, a 62-year-old retired government administrator, mustered 24 percent (3,181), and 38year-old attorney Nayib Hassan got 2,986 votes (23 percent). Collazo campaigned on his community service experience such as working with the elderly and as a former president of Celebration Point Homeowners Association, that earned him accolades that included Volunteer of the Year award and a Key to the Town award. The longtime Miami Lakes res-

ident said he’s pushing for new exit points to alleviate traffic congestion, and advocate for a new advanced MDFR life support transport to reduce response times during emergencies. Residents amended town charter to reflect a town council-manager form of government In a mail-in ballot, residents voted to approve several significant charter changes that were sug-

Dade Christian volleyball team crowned FCAA state champs Last year’s Dade Christian girl’s volleyball team fell short of their goal of winning the state title. This year, the Crusaders made sure the championship trophy came home. In dominating fashion, Dade Christian defeated Liberty Baptist in straight sets, 25-2, 25-7, to capture the FCAA state championship in Ft. Pierce, Florida. It’s the first state title for the school’s volleyball team. Led by Katherine Kemp, Lily Sierra, Samantha Dorta, Elizabeth “Lulu” Maldonado, Gabriella Gonzalez and Mallory Carrasco, the Crusaders cruised through the regular season and won the district championship. They dominated the regionals and went undefeated in the state tournament to capture the championship trophy. Dade Christian track/field standout win state title Dade Christian track and field athlete Milton Ingraham won the state championship in the discus with a 157-10 score in the final competition and finished sixth in the shot put. Ingraham, a sophomore, won the state title in the discus as a middle school student at Dade

Christian. He also plays basketball for the Crusaders, a power forward who averaged six points and seven rebounds a game this past season. Doreen Mercer, Dade Christian’s track and field coach said Ingraham is very committed to discus, holding records in the track and field event. He also made The Miami Herald’s All-Dade First Team in track and field. Miami Lakes honors former Dolphins running back Miami Lakes honored former Miami Dolphins running back and resident Tony Nathan with a proclamation during a Town Council meeting. Then-Councilmember Manny Cid sponsored legislation to celebrate his life accomplishments from his rise from high school and college in Alabama to the NFL, where he played in two Super Bowls. Nathan’s personal life story was brought to the big screen in a movie entitled Woodland which reflected on the racially-torn and turbulent period throughout the 1960s and 1970s in Birmingham, Alabama, where his high school football team helped ease racial tension. Miami Lakes Middle girl’s basketball team does it again For the second consecutive season, the Miami Lakes Middle girls’ basketball team finished the season undefeated and won the North Dade County Middle School Championship, a 54-20 victory over the Southwood Middle. The Warriors (8-0) defeated the Superstars last year to win the title. Miami Lakes Middle head coach Tracie Pullum said she coached a great group of girls.

Former mayor files new complaint to collect legal fees from M. Lakes By The Miami Laker staff Former Miami Lakes mayor Michael Pizzi filed an amended complaint against the Town of Miami Lakes in exactly 20 days after a judge dismissed his original lawsuit which was seeking $2.5 million in attorneys’ fees stemming from his federal bribery corruption trial in 2014. Last month, Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Antonio Marin granted a motion to dismiss the complaint without prejudice, after determining the complaint did not prove that Pizzi was serving a public purpose in seeking the town’s reimbursement of his fees, among other issues, Judge Marin ruled. He gave Pizzi, an attorney, 20

days to amend his lawsuit against Miami Lakes, where he served as mayor for two-terms. Pizzi furnished a copy of the amended complaint to The Miami Laker, which was filed in the circuit court on December 20, 2016. After a jury acquitted the former mayor of federal bribery charges in 2014, Pizzi filed two lawsuits against Miami Lakes seeking reimbursement for attorney’s fees in his federal trial and reinstatement case in which the Florida Supreme Court forced Governor Rick Scott to reinstate him. He sued Miami Lakes in the lower courts to get his job back. Miami Lakes settled his reinstatement lawsuit for $460,000.

For his attorneys’ fees reimbursement lawsuit, both sides agreed to abate the case for six months to give Miami Lakes a chance to fight its own litigation against its insurance carrier for refusing to cover Pizzi’s legal bills. The abatement ended in November. Pizzi said the complaint needed to be refiled with additional information in order for the case to proceed. Pizzi lost his reelection bid against new mayor Manny Cid in November. He served as mayor for Miami Lakes for eight years, and previously was a councilman for seven years.

Mater Lakes Academy starts robotics program This past summer, three teachers from Mater Lakes Academy received training from the organization, Project Lead the Way, to enhance the STEM program at Mater Lakes Academy. One of the teachers, Amy Garcia, received training in the Engineering program to begin teaching that at Mater Lakes Academy for the 2016-2017 school year. Garcia, the sponsor for the SECME club at Mater Lakes, (Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics, and Enrichment), was a natural fit for the Engineering training for the Robotics course. Students come in to room 423 every second period to begin their robotics course. “This class provides the education of engineering to help us start a career. In class we create gears and mechanisms that work in a smart complicated process. What I plan on learning from the class is the ability to see what it’s like to

Spanish Lake Elementary marks National Parent Involvement Day Spanish Lake Elementary administration and faculty inaugurated the first annual “Read To Your Child Day” to honor National Parent Involvement Day, held in late November. Although SLE encourages parental involvement, this was a special day for parents to come into the classroom to read to their child. If a parent could not attend, the child was teamed with another parent attending. Teachers readily had a selection of books on varied levels and varied languages available to parents. With parents and families involved, research has shown students are more likely to succeed in school, have fewer absences, and experience fewer discipline problems.

be an engineer,” said Katherine Kemper, eighth grader. The students in this specialized course have just created mouse trap cars for local competition and essays for national competitions. The students are now working on creating robots and coding them to perform tasks. “I like that this class provides students a chance to get involved with engineering, and computers. It helps put students on a path towards careers in STEM fields. It teaches students teamwork and communication skills that are valued highly. I plan on learning more about the parts that make up robots, and more about the coding language we are using: Robot C,” said Julian Mendez, ninth grader. Garcia has fallen in love with this class and knows that more students will too. For more information, visit the school’s website at www.materlakes.org.

Our Lady of the Lakes girl’s basketball team wins All Catholic Conference title Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School varsity girls’ basketball team has been competitive the last 4 years in the All Catholic Conference (ACC). In three of the past four years, the team has earned two North Division titles (2013 and 2014), one undefeated season (2013), and three All Catholic Conference playoff appearances (2013, 2014, 2016). The teams in 2013 and 2014 did not win the semi-final playoff game. After the 2014 season, the team lost many key players due to graduation, and during 2015, the team went through some growing pains. For the 2016 season, the Lady Cheetahs wanted to turn those pains into gains, so the quest of chasing a Championship began. The Lady Cheetahs dominated their opponents by defeating them on average by 20 points throughout the season. The team finished the regular season with a record of 8-2 and runner-up in the ACC North Division. Despite their success, the team still had to fight through some adversity. They had to learn to deal with defeat twice and learn how to finish the regular season in the first round of playoffs without their 8th grade point guard and leader, Alexa Gonzalez, due to a left wrist injury. The team clinched a #1 seed in the ACC 2A Classification Playoffs, and played a semi-final game on December 10 against the #4 Lady All-Stars of St. Mary's Catholic School. The Lady Cheetahs came out victorious defeating St. Mary’s 40-24. OLL played great team defense, and they were lead in scoring by the two youngest players on the team, 5th graders Sofia Mendez (17 points) and Jaden Castro (8 points). The team made history by being the first varsity girl team in any sport in Our Lady of the Lakes athletic history to make it to the championship game since the ACC instituted a playoff system by school classification in 2007. On December 17, the girls got their opportunity to complete their championship mission versus the #3 seed, the Lady Knights of Holy Rosary-St. Richards at St. Brendan High School. The team went down by 8 points early and trailed the entire first half. The players and coaches had to change their defensive game plan and mind set when several players got into foul trouble. Despite what they had to overcome, the Lady

The Lady Cheetahs defeated the Lady Knights by the final score of 41-35 and were named the All Catholic Conference 2016 2A Champions. “With one experienced 8th grader hurt and not playing 100 percent healthy, the younger players and the rest of the players found a way to win against the tough, strong-willed, and highly skilled Holy Rosary team,” said coach Alan Gonzalez. Castro (10 points) and seventh grader Nicole Sedeno (4 points, 5 blocks, and 7 rebounds) were named 2A All Stars Players of the game. Fifth grader Sofia Mendez was named the tournament 2A All Catholic Conference Most Valuable Player.

However, the season was not without adversity. The Lady Sharks had a rocky start, going 64 in their first 10 games. Pace Fine Arts brings Tinseltown to South Florida By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School’s Fine Arts & Academies for Visual Performing Arts and classes for dance, drama, music, and art brought Tinseltown to South Florida with “A Hollywood Christmas” on December 9 inside the Spartan Center. Pace students from each of these four subjects performed in the Pace Fine Arts department’s annual Christmas production for Pace family, friends, and alumni. The show was presented as a classic Hollywood production, with dance, singing, pantomime, and musical performances framed with acted scenes written and performed by Pace drama students. Pace Drama thespians portrayed the cast and crew of the production, with senior Pablo Pernia playing the show’s director who gave out orders, dealt with famed stars of old like Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe, and tried to keep

the show on track. Dancers from the Pace Starlettes danceline, dance academy, and classes performed on stage to Christmas music. On the side of the stage, students from the Pace music academy and classes played classic Christmas songs conducted by Ross Goldman, the lead teacher for the Academy of Visual & Performing Arts Music Program. The production culminated with set pieces about the birth of Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas, with the final performance featuring Pace dancers dressed as angels and dancing in the aisle and on stage to Mariah Carey’s “Jesus Born on this Day.” Valarie Lloyd, Pace Dean of Students and Fine Arts department chair, went on stage following the curtain call and commended the hard work and excellence of the Pace Fine Arts department and its students.

Mother of Our Redeemer students participate in holiday Advent show Mother of Our Redeemer students put on an Advent show in December called “A Musical Christmas.” Families and visitors were entertained by dancing, singing, and acting and all had a wonderful Christmas celebration to celebrate Christ’s birth. Eighth graders began the show with a re-enactment of the nativity in which they acted and moved through the different scenes of the story to the song, “Breath of Heaven.” A strong emotion was felt throughout the auditorium. The show was then kicked into

high gear with both American and Latin traditional Christmas music for the season. Younger students danced, sang, rapped, and goofed around to the musical Christmas theme. The

show was a success, and administrators are proud of the students and teachers for their theatrical performances this year. The school wishes the community a blessed new year.

School Board approves three items proposed by Perla T. Hantman The Miami-Dade County Public School Board unanimously approved three items proposed by Board member Perla Tabares Hantman at a December regular monthly meeting. The items proposed opportunities to collaborate with community entities that can deliver free, high quality and engaging youth programs to students during outof-school periods; a request for authorization of the Superintendent to encourage all of Miami-Dade’s public schools to participate in the “2017 Miami National College Fair” scheduled for Sunday, February 26; and an endorsement to add an additional 10 schools for submittal under the Safe Routes to School infrastructure grant program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation. “The safety of the youth of our community is of the highest priority to this Board, and historically, we have taken a strong position to ensure that while students are on our campuses they are in a safe and welcoming environment. I look forward to the Superintendent’s collaboration with community entities in providing the same safety to our students during out-of-school times,” said Hantman. The Board voted to promote the 2017 College Fair, explore youth programming and endorse additional schools for submittal under the Safe Routes to School infrastructure grant program.
