Miami Lakes Town Council:

Boy Scout Troop 49 requests return to new Youth Center By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Boy Scout Troop 49 is the oldest scout organization in Miami Lakes and has called the old Picnic Park Community Center on Miami Lakes Drive East its home for more than 30 years. But the building, also known as “The Shack,” was torn down to make way for a new youth center three years ago and the group was displaced and forced to find temporary space for their meetings, awards ceremonies and banquets at the Mary Collins and Royal Oaks Park community centers. And when the new youth center opened late last year, Troop 49 was ecstatic to call the new facili-

ty their home again. But not so fast. The activities planned by the Miami Lakes Youth Activities Task Force, and after school programs, posed scheduling conflicts with the Boys Scouts’ activities, leaving Troop 49 without a home again, so the troop turned to lawmakers for help. At the January 5 regular Town Council meeting, council members approved Mayor Michael Pizzi’s recommendation for town staff to create a plan that would allow the Boy Scouts to use the youth center and find space for their equipment and the annals of the troop on display for everyone

Councilmember Manny Cid is third to enter Miami Lakes mayoral race By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Councilmember Manny Cid, who initially filed papers to run for reelection for his at-large seat, has changed his mind and is now running for mayor. The announcement came last week, when Cid released a statement indicating he mulled running for mayor long before he launched his reelection bid for his council seat, but his support base for mayor grew stronger, which essentially sealed his decision. “After much prayer, serious thought and deliberation with family and friends about the future of our beautiful town, I have decided to announce my candidacy for Mayor of the Town of Miami

Lakes,” Cid said in a statement. “I don’t fail to realize that this election is bigger than me and that’s because we need to establish that the next generation of Miami Lakers inherit a better community. A community that respects all residents and their personal viewpoints and where a fair and efficient government trumps power and money.” Cid, vice president of Always at Your Side Adult Day Care, said he moved to Miami Lakes when he was eight-years-old and decided to stay in the town and raise his own family here. He and his wife, Melissa, have two small children. “My cherished memories as a child growing up in Miami Lakes,

Mayor Michael Pizzi has yet to decide whether he is running for reelection. A recipient of the Florida League of Cities 2015 Home Rule Hero Award, Cid said he knows the campaign trail for mayor is an arduous task but he is up to the challenge. Summary of Town Council actions on January 5 (Continued from Page 1) to observe. The troop placed their entire history of camping and jamboree pictures, plaques, awards, trophies and equipment in a trailer outside of Miami Lakes during construction of the youth center, which was once vandalized. Representatives of Troop 49 said the Mary Collins Community Center is a good place to conduct their business but they would rather do it at a place they once called home. The Miami Lakes United Soccer Club also felt it was left without a home after personal trainers and their clients occupied most of the space and exercise equipment at Royal Oaks Park,

forcing the teams to practice at Norman and Jean Reach Park in Palm Springs North. Council members approved Pizzi’s recommendation for town staff to draft a multi-year contract with the soccer club to use Royal Oaks Park for their practices again and other additional recreational areas within Miami Lakes, and prevent vendors charging people for their services while using the town’s parks until they agree to a revenue-sharing covenant with the town. The plan also calls for the vendors to be insured and conduct a background check on the personal trainers, which is a town requirement for anyone doing business in the parks where children are play-

ing. According to Town Manager Alex Rey, about 80 percent of kids in the soccer club’s recreational program, including Councilmembers Tony Lama’s and Manny Cid’s kids, are Miami Lakes residents. In other town business: • Lawmakers gave their final approval for an ordinance to provide more clear regulation of nonconforming uses for structures and site improvements, including fences, which may be replaced for aesthetic reasons without losing their nonconforming status. Council members approved an amendment to the ordinance made by Pizzi that if a fence is destroyed during a hurricane or other natural

disaster, it can be rebuilt using the same code standard as the old one. Pizzi said fences and other structures in the West Lakes area were grandfathered in the town’s new land development code but if the property owners tore them down, they would have to replace them under the town’s standards. The new ordinance would allow them to replace the same structure if a hurricane was responsible for the damage. • Lawmakers gave their initial approval for an ordinance to amend the current budget by carrying over the prior year’s estimated surplus to fund the completion of capital projects that were budgeted and commenced in the prior fiscal year, allocate funds for settling Pizzi’s reinstatement lawsuit and allocate funds from the town’s fund balance to reimburse FEMA for hurricane related expense disallowances. • Lawmakers approved a resolution to create a Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame at the new Miami Lakes Optimist Park Clubhouse, which will honor athletes, coaches community members and teams from the town for their outstanding contributions or achievements in sports. • Council members approved a conditional use site plan for a private educational facility at 15050 N.W. 79 Court in Miami Lake Business Park West. The Graham Companies is leasing a portion of the office building to Agmus Ventures for a private college called Ana G. Mendez University. The site plan calls for office space for up to 18 employees, classrooms for academic classes and meetings with groups between 15 and 25 students. The school can register a maximum of 200 students. The college is leasing the building on a temporary basis until the institution’s permanent home, a

new building in the Business Park, is ready. • Council members approved a resolution to amend the town’s Community and Leisure Services Rules and Regulation for a new user free schedule with the opening of the new youth center facility and picnic shelters at the park. The amendment to the fee schedule is necessary to include the new facilities which are projected to generate up to an additional $75,000 in revenues that will be utilized to offset direct facility and maintenance costs. • Lawmakers approved Councilmembers Manny Cid’s and Ceasar Mestre’s recommendation to name a street after Breanna Vergara, the 10-year-old girl who died after she collapsed during a dance class from a heart condition. Cid said the Breanna Vergara Foundation has had an incredible impact through South Florida, including the first annual 5k walk that saw thousands of people come out and of her memory. Cid originally sought to co-designate Commerce Way as Breanna Vergara Foundation Way but Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez suggested N.W. 164 Street which leads to her home and nearby Royal Oaks Park where a tree can be planted in her memory. In addition, lawmakers also approved Councilmember Tony Lama’s recommendation to require coaches at the town’s parks to learn CPR and other life-saving methods and how to use a fibrillator in an event of an emergency. • Lawmakers approved Rodriguez’s recommendation to ask Miami-Dade County to add an ALS Transport Unit at the new West Miami Lakes fire station. Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter, said the unit is needed with the development of the Dunnwoody Lake property, adding 482 homes.

Straightforward Tips For Small Businesses By Michael Huffaker, Franchise Owner Express Employment Professionals Can Mentorship Bridge the Skills Gap? One of the biggest stories coming out of the Great Recession is the lack of qualified job applicants for many semi-to highly skilled positions in a variety of industries. The skills gap has been talked about by business leaders, politicians and economists for several years, and yet the reality of jobs going unfilled is still a major factor in the economic recovery. But could there be a solution to this problem that is going unnoticed and underutilized? What’s Causing the Gap? While there is consensus among most experts that there is a skills gap in the job market, there are varying beliefs on the cause of this gap. A survey by TEKsystems of IT professionals and leaders found a disconnect between their reasons for jobs currently being open and individuals not applying. Leaders in IT believe that a lack of skills is the central reason behind the gap, while professionals in the industry believe the problem has more to do with employers expecting too much in their job description. Another report by CareerBuilder found that employers (55%) and job seekers (37%) agree that education gaps in particular areas are the leading cause for the skills gap. However, job seekers believe that gaps in expectations surrounding wages, as well as job requirements that are above entry level requirements, play a large role in unfilled jobs. Could Mentorship be the Answer? For years, apprenticeships played a significant role in training the next generation of workers. In the last few decades, the changing dynamics of the workplace have dramatically slowed this practice

of teaching. Today, mentorships are often thought of as a relationship between a younger and more experienced professional that helps the young professional develop and learn more about their industry. But what if businesses and job seekers thought of mentorships as a way to train new employees who may not have the specific skills the employer is looking for, but have the work ethic and desire to learn? Some business leaders may be hesitant to invest in educating employees who have the potential to leave and take this valuable training to another business or possibly even a competitor. However, the CareerBuilder report goes on to say that “An overwhelming 92% of employees become more loyal to a company that invests in training them, adding that they are more likely to stay at a company that values them in this way. There is no question that the responsibility to end the skills gap falls on employees and employers alike. As they enter the hiring process, job candidates should be able to clearly show that they have a desire to learn and are willing to spend time receiving training from the best people in the business so they can help the company be successful. Leaders in businesses should begin to develop programs utilizing their best employees to train new hires on the skills they’ll need to be successful. As businesses continue to look for ways to fill their unfilled job openings, mentorships should play a larger role in helping new employees be effective additions to the company. The skills gap is a challenge that can be overcome by employers and job seekers so long as both are willing to spend time teaching and learning.

Adult Day Care center offers ‘Respite Day’ for caregivers Letter to the Editor: The Miami Laker I’ve been blessed to own and operate one of South Florida’s premier Adult Day Services. Always At Your Side Adult Day Care is not simply a business to me, but it’s my opportunity to give back to the community which I’ve been helping throughout my career. After obtaining my Masters in Health Care Administration, I went into the managed care field and saw first hand the important role that caregivers play in our community. Caregivers throughout MiamiDade County need some respite. They give all of themselves to their loved ones in need and sometimes forget or are simply unable to take care of their own basic

necessities. This is why I am proud to announce our “Pay It Forward 2016” initiative by offering a free respite program for caregivers. The first Saturday of every month in 2016, beginning February 6, Always At Your Side will offer free Adult Day Services for families. My center can assist 40 families on these special days whose caregivers need a “respite” break. Our services are aimed at assisting adults who cannot be left alone and who thrive with socialization activities. For information about the Free Saturday Caregiver Respite program, call 305-362-2202, or email alonso@alwaysatyoursideadc. com. Alexandra Alonso, MHA, Director Always At Your Side Adult Day Care

Two DCS football stars named to A.P. All-State team Dade Christian football players DeWayne “DJ” Terry and Jose “Pepe” Valdivia were named to the FHSAA 2A Associated Press AllState Team last week following a stellar season where the Crusaders reached the state semifinal game. Both Terry and Valdivia played on both sides of the football this past season. On offense, Terry, a junior, recorded 692 receiving yards, 145 rushing yards and scored 14 touchdowns, including two kick off returns. He said he loved playing under head coach Nick Martinez’s system and is looking forward to next season.

“It’s cool to have a coach who has been through the system,” Terry said of Martinez who played for Dade Christian. “Everyone on our team supported each other and stuck together.” Terry also made The Miami Herald All-Dade Team this past season. Valdivia, also a junior, played defensive tackle and right guard for the Crusaders, recording eight sacks and 65 tackles. “Playing both sides of the ball, you have the opportunity to be able to experience the whole game,” he said. At 5-8 and 195 pounds, Valdivia said the team really came

together this past season and nearly accomplished their goal. “Next season, as a united team we plan to go further and that is to get to state,” he said. He, too, said playing under Martinez was a great experience. “He was the best player to come out of Dade Christian and it’s an awesome experience knowing your coach was a great player,” he said. Both Valdivia and Terry said being named to the All-State Team represents their work on the gridiron. “It felt good that our work paid off for something even though we didn’t make it to state,” Terry said.

Pace wrestling program adds new Olympic Medalist assistant coach

LAZARO REINOSO, Monsignor Edward Pace High School assistant Wrestling coach and an Olympic bronze medalist winner, guides two Spartan wrestlers during practice inside Pace’s wrestling room.

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker The Spartan wrestling team at Monsignor Edward Pace High School has a long history of excellence led by coach Frank Pelegri, including winning the Class 1A State Championship in 2000. The 2015-2016 team, which is 2-1 thus far, looks to continue that great history. Pace’s new assistant wrestling coach Lazaro Reinoso is the biggest addition to the team this season. Reinoso spent his life around wrestling, becoming the youngest member of Cuba’s national wrestling team at the age of 13.

He won the bronze medal in freestyle wrestling for Cuba at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and won the silver medal in 1993 World Wrestling Championships before defecting to the United States in 1994. He coached wrestling teams at universities and high schools across the country before coming to Pace. The standout star for the team has been senior Alex Perez, who is currently ranked first in Florida in his 138 lbs. weight class by Scout.com. He has also been named the Top Class 1A wrestler in his weight class to watch out for this season by both The Miami Herald and South Florida High

School Sports. “Alex is in a league of his own. He’s a legit champion,” said Pelegri, who expects Perez to be Pace’s first-ever 4-time district champion and considers him one of the Top 10 best Spartan wrestlers ever. Reinoso credits Perez’ success to his tremendous amounts of discipline, hard work, and willingness to help his teammates. While Perez is a senior, Reinoso says they have a young crew of wrestlers, and he expects that next year will be an even better year.

Sharon Zajac helps FIU host its first Hanukkah study break in December At the FIU Modesto Maidique Campus on December 1, the first annual Hanukkah Study Break was held with help by a committee led by Tamar Sharony, Shana Kantor, and Miami Lakes resident Sharon Zajac. The committee created the perfect environment for students who needed a break from all the preparation for finals week. The special occasion featured typical Jewish foods such as a latka "bar," sufganiyot, a "Create Your Own Smoothie" station, and brain food such as graham crackers and fruit. “We welcomed everyone to this event which is meant to celebrate the season and relax from all the stress finals week brings,” said Zajac, a planner of the event, a member of Hillel, a Jewish student organization, at FIU. “The Hanukkah Study Break was such a huge success! There was music and mingling and the atmosphere was so wonderful.” Hillel at FIU will be opening their office towards the end of Spring Term next year in Parking Garage 6, where the event was held. “We look forward to hosting this event again next year and even bringing out a free masseuse to provide massages for all students,” said Zajac. “Hillel has big plans for its future, and we hope everyone can be a part of it and watch it grow.”

BGEC’s civic students host Councilmember Tony Lama Bob Graham Education Center's seventh grade Civic Engagement Academy students, led by teacher Ingy Cruz, were honored by having Miami Lakes Councilmember Tony Lama visit their class. The Law Society students invited Lama to discuss their Project Citizen. Lama gave the students insight on local government and how town issues are addressed. The students presented their Project Citizen public policy concern regarding children in athletic programs dying of undetected heart disease. MIAMI LAKES COUNCILMEMBER Tony Lama visited Bob Graham Education Center’s Civic Engagement Academy.

Students in the class were friends and dance mates with Breanna Vergara, an 11-year-old Miami Lakes Middle Schooler who died suddenly from WolffParkinson White Syndrome. Her story inspired them to choose this issue as their topic. Lama was informative and helpful in giving advice and suggestions for their project. The students were thrilled to receive his input and knowledge and are motivated to continue their work on this issue that hits so close to home.

how this event was not only a great way to receive community service hours but also having the chance to learn about Breanna Vergara's incident and ways all can help as a community made this an amazing experience. Hialeah Miami Lakes recognized for one of highest graduation rates Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) held a press conference on Wednesday, January 6, to announce the release of the 2015 graduation rates and discuss how the District performed. Hialeah Miami Lakes (HML) had one of the highest graduation rate increases in the District and reached an all-time high of 84.9 percent for the 20142015 academic year, exceeding the District (78.1) and State (77.8) average. This 6.7 percentage point increase from last year’s rate of 78.2 marks the highest graduation rate HML has achieved since the Florida Department of Education began tracking graduation statistics with modern methods. Since 2008’s rate of 52.5, HML has made a remarkable 32.4 percentage point increase. Principal Eric Acosta said, “Achieving these results is not easy. It requires perseverance, patience, and vision. The remarkable feat that has been accomplished over the last seven years would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication and commitment of our outstanding teachers, counselors, support staff, and administrators. I have witnessed the resolve of our faculty and staff, and I am extremely proud of the work they have done and continue to do on behalf of our students.” Over the last several years, HML has completely revamped

Fifty-three new choice/magnet program offerings were created for the 2015-2016 school year, bringing the total of choice programs to over 500. This total includes 16 magnet programs at 12 schools in the areas of Science, Mathematics, Multimedia Entertainment Technology, Legal Studies, and Visual Arts; 37 choice programs at 30 schools, which include Advanced Placement (AP), Capstone Diploma (7), Cambridge (18), International (3), and Cybersecurity (1). M.L. Middle’s FEA chapter helps preschoolers in learning

FUTURE EDUCATORS OF AMERICA CLUB (FEA) at Miami Lakes Middle School, led by club sponsor, Melanie Gonzalez, had the opportunity to interact with young children at the Kid’s Choice Day Care center. The middle school students collaborated with the preschool teachers to assist in fostering learning for the children ages 3 to 5. Hands-on activities such as tissue paper Christmas wreaths and paper plate snowmen were created and books were read aloud throughout the day. “"Providing this opportunity for my middle school students to teach and interact with this educational age group is very fulfilling. I always said I wanted to be the reason a student succeeds and by allowing my F.E.A. members to really see behind the scenes, I feel it made a huge impact on them,” said Gonzalez.

HML’s Model UN team looks ahead to 2016 competitions The Hialeah Miami Lakes High School Model UN Competition Team will look to continue its successful campaign in 2016. The team is currently working diligently on position papers for two upcoming competitions. HML will be one of the only schools in the area to attend the GatorMUN competition held annually at the University of Florida from January 29 - 31. GatorMUN is one of the region’s largest and most competitive high school Model United Nations conferences. Delegates are challenged with difficult and controversial topics where they must collaborate to produce unique, innovative solutions to many of the issues that plague our world today.

GatorMUN strives to hone each delegate’s public speaking, writing, diplomacy, and problem-solving skills while maintaining a central focus on education in international issues. The theme of this year’s conference is “Growing People, Shrinking World.” This stems from the idea that the world population is growing too quickly for the Earth to sustain and therefore has given rise to an array of issues from resource conflicts to global warming. The Team will then have a quick turn around where they will compete in the Miami Model UN Competition held at Miami Dade North. The Trojans will be looking to defend their best delegation award from last years competition.

National College Fair comes to Hilton Hotel Miami Airport on February 21 Representatives from nearly 200 colleges and universities will be at the 2016 National College Fair in Miami, noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, February 21, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport and Convention Center, 777 N.W. 72 Ave. The free fair allows students, parents and other members of the public to meet with college representatives and get their questions answered. Free information sessions on financial aid, college planning, admission, and testing requirements will also be offered. Select sessions will be presented in Spanish and Haitian-Creole. Counseling and computer centers

will allow students to access career interest surveys and information about college preparation, admissions and scholarships. Requesting information from multiple colleges or universities at the College Fair is easier for students again this year. By pre-registering now, students can print a bar-coded confirmation as an electronic ID and will not have to fill out information cards. Students and their families may pre-register at www.gotomyncf.com. School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman is co-chair of the local committee of the National College Fair.
