Green Corridor District paves way for residents, businesses to get clean energy financing Miami Lakes Town Council voted at the December regular meeting to join the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program. The PACE Program provides upfront financing for energy conservation and efficiency (i.e. energy-efficient heating, cooling, or ventilation systems), renewal energy (i.e. solar panels), Wind resistance (i.e. impact resistant windows) and other improvements. Through these improvements, residents and business property owners are able to reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs, fortify private properties, preserve property values, and stimulate the local economy by the creation of needed construction jobs. The Council’s unanimous vote makes Miami Lakes the most recent of 15 communities in Miami-Dade County to become part of he groundbreaking Green Corridor District and tap into more than $550 million of private capital funding for residential and commercial building energy upgrades and hurricane protection improvements. “This decision is all about powering the local economy while reinforcing the Town’s reputation

as an environmental leader,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “The PACE program creates jobs that can’t be outsourced while driving economic activity and tax revenue to fund local services all at the same time as helping our residents and businesses access capital to help pay to improve their properties. Cosponsored by Councilmember Tony Lama and myself, the Council and I are very happy to bring this option to the people of Miami Lakes.” “Miami Lakes and all of the communities in South Florida’s Green Corridor District are leading the next era of progressive, smart city policy,” said Joe Spector, director of operations for Ygrene Energy Fund Florida, the program’s third party administrator. “These communities have elected to jumpstart economic growth and forge a reliable source for building improvement financing. We welcome the Town of Miami Lakes to the Green Corridor.” Property owners and contractors within Miami Lakes can visit the Green Corridor website to get more information and apply for the program at www.Clean EnergyGreenCorridor.com.

This is the eighth consecutive year the Town has received the Tree City USA honor and the sixth consecutive year it has received the Growth Award. These designations are awarded to cities and towns for their excellence in urban forestry management. The Tree City USA designation is provided by The Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with

the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Forest Service, to recognize environmental improvement and encourage higher levels of tree care throughout America. The Tree City USA Growth Award is given to communities that go beyond the standards of Tree City USA and demonstrate improvement and growth of local tree care. Being a Tree City USA helps present the kind of image that most citizens want to have for the place they live or conduct business.

THE MIAMI LAKER

A preview of what’s ahead in Miami Lakes for 2015 The Miami Laker staff The Town of Miami Lakes ushered in the new year with a bang, as fireworks lit up the night sky and residents were wishing for the best in 2015. And the Miami Lakes Town Council, town volunteers, the educational and business communities offer hope to make the city the best place to live, work, learn, play and shop for the new year. Miami Lakes is exploring ways to resolve the decade-long traffic gridlock, creating a canal bank stabilization program to clean the water, resume the next phases of the stormwater drainage master plan, developing a plan for a passive park for the Par 3 golf course at Shula’s Golf Club, building the clubhouse for the Miami Lakes Optimist Clubhouse, and bringing in new businesses for people to shop and dine among other plans for 2015. Miami Lakes securing its own zip code to help lower insurance rates for residents is another goal for the town though it may be far-

fetched, and Miami Lakes’ partnership with Miami-Dade Public Schools to enhance learning opportunities for students should help keep area schools’ A grade status. In sports, American High and Mater Academy baseball teams are seeking to win back-to-back state championships. Here is a list of projected accomplishments for Miami Lakes and its surrounding areas for the new year: • With the state of Florida reportedly having a $1 billion surplus for 2015 and heading into the 60-day Legislation Session in two months, Miami Lakes released a wish list for state funding, including five different capital improvement projects, requesting a total of $3.75 million. The projects include the West Lakes Drainage Improvement plan, canal bank stabilization program, and stormwater drainage improvements for the areas of Lake Sarah, Lake Adele, Lake Hilda and Lake Susie.

Miami Lakes will also request state funding for the Par 3 golf course to be converted to a passive park, and the town’s Greenways and Trails Master Plan. The Miami Lakes Par 3 Committee has recommended that the town take over the land and develop a plan for the area only to be used as a passive park. • In 2015, Miami Lakes, once again, will explore different options on resolving the 10-year traffic congestion, especially on the west side of town near the Palmetto Expressway, where construction is causing additional vehicle pile ups. Councilmember Tony Lama is leading the initiative and lawmakers approved his request for town staff to schedule a workshop and a summit this year that would include state, Miami-Dade County and the town’s engineers in hopes of contriving some solutions to solve the traffic plight. • Miami Lakes is planing to spend $50,000 in 2015 for a joint marketing plan with two of the town’s biggest landowners to bring in new and popular restaurants and retail businesses to help fill vacancies on Main Street and other shopping centers. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre, who is spearheading the initiative, said residents are dining in Coral Gables and shopping in Pembroke Pines instead of spending their money in the town. He said the marketing plan would lure more businesses for residents to patronize and keep their dollars in Miami Lakes. • The long-awaited Miami-

Dade fire station located at N.W. 77 Court and Miami Lakes Drive is expected to be operating sometime this year, and county and town officials will usher in the new facility with a grand opening celebration. The fire station has been in the works since 2006, and eight years later, it finally comes to fruition. While the county was searching for land to build the much-needed fire station on the western fringes of the town, former Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso, a realtor, discovered the FDOT vacant land and led the initiative and study that allowed the state agency to transfer the land to Miami-Dade. • Miami Lakes will finalize its partnership with Miami-Dade Public Schools for the Miami Lakes Education Compact Program, which would help the town strive to meet the educational needs of youths. The program will enhance the learning opportunities for all students with programs and projects that can be enriched, expedited or better realized through collaborative efforts. The town has five schools within its boundaries and one school outside the town that service students who live Miami Lakes, including Barbara Goleman High School, Bob Graham Education Center, Miami Lakes Educational Center, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, Miami Lakes K-8 Center and Miami Lakes Middle School. • Miami Lakes residents approved a straw ballot on November 5 to allow town officials to resume efforts of landing its own zip code to help lower insurance rates for Miami Lakes residents. Since incorporation, the town has been using Hialeah’s postal zip codes of 33014, 33015, 33016, and 33018.

Vice Mayor Manny Cid, who is leading the charge, recently got the ball rolling again by writing a letter to President Obama explaining the importance of the town adopting its own and exclusive zip code. In the missive, Cid mentioned that former U.S. Senator Bob Graham has championed the same effort, and U.S. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart is now involved to present Miami Lakes’ case for the zip code boundary change. • Miami Lakes kids can start the new year off by getting in shape with the town’s Just Run Program, a program that promotes fitness for elementary and middle school students for four months. The five-year-old program, offered by the Miami Lakes Youth Activities Task Force, for kids between the ages of 5 and 14 kicks off in January and will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. The program ends in May 2015. Besides exercising, the Just Run Program also teaches healthy eating, good citizenship and taking pride in the kids’ accomplishments. • As part of its Beautification Master Plan, Miami Lakes is planning to build an entrance feature at N.W. 67 Avenue near 138 Street and at the Palmetto Expressway and Miami Lakes Drive. The town is also planning lush landscaping around Miami Lakes and continuing with the black olive tree removal program. • The American High baseball team hits the practice field next month with the goal of winning back-to-back state championships. Beating Tarpon Springs East Lake last year for the title puts them in a good position in 2015 to return to the state tournament and defend the championship.

Popular ‘Painting With A Twist’ concept opens by M. Lakes residents By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Painting With A Twist, the bring-your-own-beverage painting studio that encourages amateur artists to tackle famous paintings with the help of a teacher, is coming to Miami Lakes. The four partners who franchised Painting With A Twist, Yirka and Alex Marban, Ignacio Menendez and Yaime Riveiro are surprisingly not artists, but all enjoyed taking classes at Painting With A Twist and hoped to open their own. Their dream was realized with the upcoming grand opening for Painting With A Twist, Miami Lakes, tentatively scheduled for early January, in the Promenade Building at 15100 N.W. 67

Avenue, Suite 111. The new studio has already generated a lot of buzz from the community and the Marbans have responded to emails and visits from eager painters. Painting With A Twist is a painting class led by a teaching artist who provides step-by-step instructions on how to paint the piece of the night. Over 4,000 copyrighted images included several famous paintings are in the database and are scheduled throughout the month for general classes. work environment of Painting With A Twist, yet they were drawn to the atmosphere of fun and socializing while enjoying wine or a beverage of choice. The Marbans have been members of the community for 20 years and when the time came to choose a location for their new franchise Miami Lakes was the obvious choice. “We walk to the movie theaters and we eat at the Thai place on Main Street,” said Alex Marban. “This is our neighborhood and our home. If we don’t have to leave it, we don’t.” The owners have hired fresh talent to lead their classes and are looking forward to their grand opening celebration which will feature weekday evening classes and multiple weekend classes. The closest Painting With A Twist location to the area is in Midtown, Miami, a far reach for many Miami Lakes residents who will only need a short walk to the newest location in Miami Lakes’ Town Center. The business owners are also eager to give back to the community they have been a part of for so long, noting that they will be hosting and funding local charities with their new business. U.S. Paralympics partners with M-D Public Schools for Paralympic sports program U.S. Paralympics, a division of the Olympic Committee, is partnering with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to implement a school-based Paralympic sports program. This program, made possible through a grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, will provide a pathway for students with disabilities to participate in extracurricular athletics, specifically track and field in the 2015 spring semester. The team from U.S. Paralympics coming to MiamiDade County Public Schools will include Chris Snyder, director of Coaching Education; Paul Ackerman, associate director, Paralympic National Partnerships and Programs; Dan Schweider, manager, Paralympic Community Partnership Programs; Teresa

Skinner and Erica Wheeler, Paralympic national team coaches; and U.S. Paralympians John Register, April Holmes, and Carlos León. This will be the first time this program is being implemented in Miami-Dade public schools and will serve as a model for other school districts across the state and the United States. “Bringing an opportunity like this to Miami-Dade County Public Schools will provide a world of opportunity for students with disabilities. More importantly, it presents students with disabilities the opportunity to participate in school-wide athletic programs alongside their peers,” said Dr. Jayne Greenberg, District Director of Physical Education and Health Literacy.

Local author, Seven N Blue, publishes first novel By R.A. Romero, The Miami Laker staff A Miami Lakes resident and author with a peculiar pen name, whose origin is shrouded in secret, can often be found visiting her favorite haunts in Miami Lakes, like the Vie De France cafe or Starbucks where she taps away on her laptop. Her name is Seven N Blue, a first time author with an independently published book titled “The Lunatics.” “The Lunatics,” a young adult novel set in the streets of San Francisco, is centered around pro-

tagonist Myla Su Blackbird and her efforts to solve the mystery behind her parents’ untimely deaths. A spiral is an insignia often referenced within the book and on the cover, a symbol whose meaning is an integral part of the story. Blue’s book is her first published novel though the second she has written. Her short story, “Love in the Time of Exhaust,” was previously published in a San Francisco Anthology of Poetry. Blue studied Creative Writing at San Francisco State University, the alma mater of Anne Rice, and has harbored a love of writing since the moment she learned how to write. She owes her growth as a writer and love of adventure to her late father who recognized and supported her talent early in life. “I was lucky enough to have a dad that was paying attention,” said Blue. “As soon as he saw my inclination he said to me ‘Honey, you are a writer. Always write.’ So I believed him. I never stopped.” Blue has drawn inspiration for her writing from otherwise banal things like railroads, graffiti, construction sites, forests and halfempty museums but coming from

a woman who collects wigs and believed at 4 years old that she was Pinocchio, the ability to find beauty in trivialities is an almost expected quirk. The concept for “The Lunatics” came from Blue’s idea of a Grim Reaper of sorts, except instead of taking souls, takes sanity. She chipped away at the novel over a year while working full time and raising her son before publishing. “The Lunatics” sequel is set for an April 2015 release. Blue was recently featured at Books and Books in Coral Gables as a visiting author to answer questions and read from her novel. “The Lunatics” was also entered into the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Contest and ranked in the top 5 percent of 5000 entries in the Young Adult category. “The Lunatics” is available for purchase through Amazon for paperback or on the Kindle and Nook. Books and Books also carries a handful of signed copies. Additionally, 50 percent of the profits made from “The Lunatics”

SEVEN N BLUE until December 31 will go toward Yoga Gangsters, a local organization that improves the lives of young adults in underserved communities with the help of yoga. For more information, visit www.sevennblue.com.

Recycle real Christmas trees and be rewarded with mulch Miami Lakes area residents who receive curbside waste collection service from Miami-Dade County can now recycle their Christmas trees by taking them to one of the county’s Trash and Recycling Centers or the West Miami-Dade Home Chemical Collection Center. All trees brought in for recycling must be free of tree stands, lights, ornaments, tinsel and other decorations. The trees will be converted into mulch, available to residents on a first-come, first served basis beginning in early February. The two closest Trash and Recycling Centers available to area residents are Palm Springs

North, 7870 N.W. 178 Street, and North Dade Landfill, 21500 N.W. 47 Avenue. The two centers are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Home Chemical Collection Center, 8801 N.W. 58 Street, will be open 7 days a week through January 9 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for tree drop off only. Christmas tree mulch will be available at the North Dade Landfill beginning in early February while supplies last. Residents need to bring their own bags or containers. New Year’s Resolutions! For many of us, getting in shape in the number 1 New Year’s Resolution. Not having enough time to exercise is the most common excuse but please note that a healthy lifestyle may be more critical to your climb up the corporate ladder that you thought. Sacrificing your health and fitness so you can spend more hours at the office might actually be counterproductive as even the most devoted employees will experience diminished health if they are totally consumed with work. Being fit and healthy gives you the stamina and the resiliency needed to perform at your best. If you have, or have had any medical condition, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue recommends that you obtain physician clearance before pursuing an exercise program. In the beginning of the year, it is

common for our department to receive an increase in calls from residents that try to lose weight too fast with extreme diets or workout regimes. Exercising three times a week should be enough. The aim is spending at least 2 hours and 30 minutes performing moderate intensity aerobic activity. Walking, running, and lifting weights are ideal but if you are like me and love to dance, Zumba may be your preferred way to lose weight and stay in shape. This aerobic workout blends choreographed footwork and body movements from Salsa, Meringue, Flamenco and other dances to sculpt your body and burn fat. When you’re grooving to the spicy Latin beats during a Zumba class, you won’t even realize that you’re toning your abs, thighs, glutes, and arms. Indoor rock climbing is an

President’s Volunteer Service Awards presented to Miami Lakes area students

anaerobic workout that builds strength, balance and can burn up to 800 calories an hour – you work muscles you didn’t know you had. At indoor climbing gyms, beginners usually start with bouldering (climbing shorter walls without a rope or harness) and top roping (climbing with an instructor or spotter using a harness or rope). It’s actually lots of fun! If you are on a budget after the holiday shopping, rope jumping could be your chosen path as it is a full-body cardiovascular workout that will make you feel like a kid again while strengthening your muscles and bones, as well as, improving your coordination. Sometimes going back to our roots becomes healing. For example, if there’s a sport you enjoyed as a child or have always wanted to try, find a local league and join a team. You’ll be move motivated to exercise while you’ve got teammates waiting on you for practices and games. You will also get so focused on the game and social aspects of playing on a team that it won’t feel like exercise. For me, going back to my roots means skating, which is an alternative to running because it’s easier on the joints; this is actually my New Year’s Resolution. Skating tones the lower body and builds leg strength. Both ice and inline skating are good calorie burners – a 143-pound women burns about 330 calories during one hour of continuous skating. Happy Healthy New Year!

Optimist baseball/softball signups get underway A week full of Christmas The Miami Lakes Optimist Lakeway North, which is adjacent under players; Tuesday, January activities for students at 20 for 10-under players; Club will be holding registration to Miami Lakes Optimist Park. Participants must bring copies Wednesday, January 21 for 12for its Spring baseball and softball Monsignor Pace High School season during the first three of their birth certificates during the under players; and Thursday, By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker The most wonderful time of the year was just as wonderful at Monsignor Edward Pace High School with a week full of Christmas activities just before students took their finals. The week started off with the Tykes Christmas Party on December 8, where Pace faculty and staff brought their young children to the school’s Administration Building for a night of family games, food, and fun. Children colored in Christmas cartoons, had their faces painted, and even got a visit from Santa. On December 11, the Pace Fine Arts Department put on a show for a packed house in the Spartan Center with the Frozen Over SingAlong. Dancers, thespians, and musicians from Pace’s Fine Arts Academies and classes performed as lyrics to songs from “Frozen” were displayed on a screen above the stage for the audience to sing along to. To cap off the week on December 12, Pace students and staff packed a school bus with over 500 toys and headed to Miramar Fire Station #84 next to the NBC 6/Telemundo 51 studios to participate in NBC 6’s Caravan of Joy Toy Drive for the seventh straight year. Outside in front of the fire station, principal Ana Garcia was interviewed along with Pace sophomore Pablo Pernia for Acceso

Total on Telemundo 51 as they spoke about the tradition of Pace’s donations to the Caravan of Joy and how important it was to help those in need during the holiday season. Just an hour later, Garcia and senior Gabriel Sanchez, president of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, were interviewed by Pace Class of 2002 alumna Roxanne Vargas for NBC 6’s 6 in the Mix. “It’s such an honor to be here helping the community,” said Garcia in her interview with Vargas. “We want to make sure that this is truly the spirit of Christmas. We want to make sure that every child will wake up Christmas morning and be able to celebrate in the joy of opening a gift and [know] that giving, as well as receiving, is wonderful during this very special time.” All throughout the morning, Pace students pulled toys out of the bus to deliver them and the Pace choir sang Christmas carols for the TV cameras. After the interviews, students from NHS brought the toys into the NBC 6 lobby for the toys to be tallied and eventually delivered to children in South Florida for Christmas. In addition to the donations made to the Caravan of Joy, Pace also donated toys to the Kevin Garcia Foundation and to Meals from the Heart, an organization run by Pace Class of 2013 alumna Monica Bustinza.

Championship game on December 14 against the St. Rose of Lima Cardinals. OLL led 19-8 in the first half, but with six minutes left, the Cardinals rallied and made a 19-8 run tying the game at 27-27. With only 10 seconds left, coaches German Garcia and Frank Perez reminded the team of their motto this year: “One Heart, One Pulse, One Team,” saying “This is our last seconds of unity, we must be one time right now and stay together to win this game.” The Cheetahs won 29-27 on a buzzer-beating layup shot by Hernandez. The Cheetahs became the first OLL team to win the 3A Conference title since 2009.

abilities. It is a great way to spend time with friends, family and clients while out in the wonderful South Florida weather all year round. It is never too early or too late to begin learning the game. The best way to learn how to golf is with a friend. Starting a new sport can be frightening for some, however, when starting with a friend, the learning process can be fun especially when both are achieving certain milestones in the sport. Most people tend to stick with golf when they learn with a friend because they ensure they have a golf buddy.

Establishing New Year’s resolutions has been a popular activity for many years. It is a great time for people to hit the reset button or re-focus on certain tasks. Many people who play golf form their resolutions around the sport. Some of the more popular resolutions for golfers include: Lowering one’s handicap, breaking 100/90/80 for the first time, making a par on the 13th hole at Shula’s, or simply just playing more golf. Whatever your resolution is for 2015, we hope it includes playing more golf at Shula’s Golf Club.

Nancy Handley retires from M.L. Educational Ctr. By Juanita Cardona and Daniela Morales, Special to The Miami Laker Nancy Handley retired from Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) ending a huge chapter in her life and in the lives of countless students. “Work is not work if you love what you do,” said Handley, a phrase that has defined her career, spanning 44 years in the classroom. Handley began her teaching career as a home economics teacher, then worked as a health teacher and then a physical education “drillmaster.” The common

denominator? Not only did she impact students’ lives, she worked hard to instill the importance of health – physical and emotional. “You guys should be grateful,” said Juliane Ramos, one of Handley’s former students, who stopped by to visit her on her last day as a teacher. “This is the same lady that got me in shape. I used to be so lazy. All those days of hard working insanity, running the mile, crunches,” she said, addressing the class. It’s that satisfaction, said Handley, in knowing that she has seen her students grow and return

to thank her for the role she played in their lives that kept her going. Handley, a breast cancer survivor, knows the importance of good health. She credits her dedication to physical fitness and healthy eating for saving her life. Her experiences made her all the more dedicated to instilling that into her students and colleagues. “A few years ago Nancy Handley started an MLEC fitness club, and invited teachers and faculty to join her and walk, jog or run for an hour after school. She always led the way, she could run circles around people half her age,” said Helena Castro, MLEC activities director. Not only did Handley help students achieve their physical potential, she even taught them how to dance. Teaching the boys and girls key rhythms to mastering dances like salsa and bachata. She took pride in this, along with the ability to make her high school students active. Handley has always valued her own personal strength and she promises to “walk five miles every morning” which she has done as long as she can remember. Even though Handley is retiring from teaching, she is not planning on retiring from her healthy and fit lifestyle. “Your health is your wealth,” is her motto and she plans to keep it that way as she begins a new phase in her life. So, what is next? Although Handley treasures all of the memories and the fulfillment that spans her long, fruitful career, she is glad that she can

finally realize her dreams of traveling around the world and 2015 is her year. She plans a move back home to Houston, Texas. “Then in April I’m going to travel to Paris, Dubai, and then Hawaii in August.” Handley will continue to walk, run, jog and dance – only, she won’t be confined to a curriculum or a high school gym. “She was a disciplinarian, always at work and dependable. Sometimes we danced to salsa in class. I will miss her but she was ready to move into another chapter

in her life.” said Gene Williams, Physical Education faculty at MLEC. Handley's students rewarded her with a standing ovation as she exited her final teaching period. She said she will cherish all the memories she had at MLEC. The mile runs around the bus loop, the countless burpees, and the repetitive steps up and down bleachers will be just a few of the things that students will remember her by, but especially for her dedication to them and amazing Zumba lessons.

MLEC students accepted at prestigious universities By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Four Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) students, Alejandra Mendoza, Salwa Raza, David Pacheco, and Julissa Higgins spent the end of 2014 celebrating after learning they had been accepted early to prestigious

universities across the nation. Mendoza, a Questbridge full tuition scholarship recipient, was accepted to Columbia University. Raza, a Posse scholar, was accepted at Mount Holyoke. Pacheco was accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Higgins was accepted at Harvard

University. The students, whose early admission was not binding, are still looking into applying at other renown schools such as Duke, Stanford, Yale and Princeton. The students have a long history of academic success within the Cambridge Academy, dual enrollment program, Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) courses and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, each of which improve the students weighted and unweighted grade point average, one of the many factors colleges and universities consider in applications. Additionally, to pay the way for their studies, the students have either already received funding or are in the process of applying for scholarships such as The Bill and Melinda Gates Scholarship and the Silver Knight Scholarship. Acceptance into prestigious universities is a concept considered out of reach by many lowincome families and minorities, a thought that Higgins feels is unfounded. “Though I always dreamed of going to Harvard, even at a young age, I didn't know how accessible it was until my sister was accepted in 2011. And I think that is a misconception that many students – especially minorities and lowincome students – have. While it

may be difficult to get into, it is certainly doable,” said Higgins. The prospective majors for these students range from biochemistry to economics and political science. The students, some with 30 hours of college credits already under their belts, continue to pursue higher education with the same zealous effort displayed in their formational years and were nurtured by the patience and talents of school faculty. “At MLEC, we have great

teachers. So maybe, more than any subject or lesson, they’ve prepared me for college in ways I didn’t think I would need. They’ve placed me in positions of leadership, but they’ve also fostered my independence. I’ve grown as a student, but most importantly, I’ve grown as a person,” said Mendoza. MLEC faculty and staff congratulated the students on their academic achievements and future endeavors.

In Memoriam:

Breanna Vergara, 11-years-old By Yvonne Alvarez Studio Director Miami Dancity Studios Special to The Miami Laker We will always remember this amazing 11-year-old Breanna Vergara. Breanna had only danced here since this past August. She was a competitive dancer at Dance Creations Dance Academy since she was 3 years old. She got her dance training from Maria Alonso and her staff for many years until her path led to our doors. We welcomed her with open arms as we welcome all, but had no idea she would change our lives the way she has. Breanna immediately joined our competition program, as her talents exceeded our expectations. She trained with us and rehearsed with us. She brought something to our studio that, in all honesty, made her stand out from the rest. She lit up the room when she walked in. Her gorgeous light eyes, illuminating smile, and her piercing dimples made everyone fall in love with her. She was a friend to all. She had a kiss and hug for every teacher after every class. She was respectful, loving, disciplined, motivated, compassionate, driven, determined, and unbelievably caring. On Tuesday, December 9, Breanna came to our studios, her second home, and took class like any other day. She danced, and as always, danced with every ounce of her existence. She laughed, fooled around, and did everything she had done with her friends just

BREANNA VERGARA as she always had. It was a day like any other. She danced until her body could dance no more, and she fought like she always had. Tough until the very end. As a studio, as dancers, as teachers and parents, we may have lost the visual light that Breanna illuminated when she walked into a room. Breanna was our gift. She came to us to spend her final moments and to dance her last dance with us. On that Tuesday night, Breanna joined the best studio in the heavens. A studio where she will spend all her time. She will dance among angels and she will shed her light upon us from above. Her life was one to celebrate and one to inspire all of us, young and younger, to live as she lived and to carry on as a positive light as she was. I pray that we grow in love as a studio family and we always remember what Breanna stood for and what she now symbolizes and will forever represent to Miami Dancity...Love and Light!

Archdiocese of Miami gifts $650K to Monsignor Edward Pace High By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Archbishop Thomas Wenski and the Archdiocese of Miami generously gifted $650,000 to Monsignor Edward Pace High School. With graduates at over 240 universities such as Princeton, Notre Dame, and Georgetown, Pace has educated Catholic students for over 50 years. “Archbishop Wenski is appreciative of the good work in Catholic education that is accomplished at Pace and supports the work through this donation,” said Sister Elizabeth Worley, Chancellor for Administration and CEO of the Archdiocese of Miami. The money will be used to renovate the roofs of the school and meet academic and scholarship needs. To thank Archbishop Wenski and the Archdiocese for their gift, Pace administrators and students traveled to the Archdiocese of Miami Pastoral Center on December 12. The Pace choir regaled Archbishop Wenski and attracted staff members out of their offices with Christmas carols in the Archdiocese’s courtyard. Principal Ana Garcia then presented the Archbishop with a giant card of gratitude made by Pace students and signed by hundreds

The gift comes after a donation earlier in the year from the Hugoton Foundation, a regular annual donor to the school. Through the Hugoton Foundation’s generosity, the school has acquired two 3D printers and built the Hugoton STEM Lab, the hub for Pace’s new STEM Signature Academy that will be offered beginning next school year. The school will also begin offering a Law Studies Signature Academy for the 20152016 school year.

400 middle school students compete at Pace’s 2014 Academic Olympics By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Around 400 students from 11 middle schools across South Florida competed in Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s 2014 Spartan Academic Olympics in early December. The annual event celebrates the academic achievements of middle school students in multiple subject areas, such as English, Math, Foreign Languages, and Science. Academic Olympians arrived at the Pace campus early to register and take their exams in Pace classrooms. Olympians were divided into seventh and eighth grade groups for each subject and assessed by Pace teachers. For most of the 11 subject categories, students were assessed based on written exams, with the exceptions of Art, Music, and Speech. As students took their exams in classrooms, their parents were given a tour of the campus by cur-

rent Pace students and staff. After the tests were completed, results were tallied by Pace and students filed back into the Spartan Center for the presentation of the individual and overall awards. The first, second, and third place individual winners for each subject in both seventh and eighth grade were honored on-stage with a certificate presented to each of them by Pace principal Ana Garcia. In the overall awards, Annunciation Catholic School won first place in both the seventh and eighth grade Division 2A category. In the Division 2A category, St. John the Apostle Catholic School and Mother of Our Redeemer Catholic School (MOR) won second and third place for seventh graders while St. Bartholomew and St. John the Apostle won second and third place for eighth graders. For the Division 1A category, St. Rose of

Lima School won first place for seventh graders and Immaculate Conception won first place for eighth graders. MOR students Giovanna Pirruccio won first place in math, Melissa Alvarez placed third in Musical Vocal, and Andres Betancourt earned third place in Spanish. The school also earned the third place overall in the Small School category. MOR middle school math and science teacher, Altagracia Ramos, was elated to see her students shine. “It was a great feeling when they called out ‘first place in math goes to Mother of Our Redeemer’. This is what keeps me going, knowing that my hard work and dedication is enriching my students to grow in mind and spirit.” Pace High School will be holding its Entrance Exam on January 24 at 8 a.m. For more information on enrollment, visit www.pacehs. com, email admissions@pacehs. com, or call (305) 923-7223, ext. 342.

M-Dade Schools outperform the state on school grades and graduation rates Miami-Dade County’s public high schools have once again outperformed the state on school performance grades, despite increased accountability measures. “In spite of the state of flux in the state’s accountability plan, which prevents a visual, objective measurement of improvement, our high schools continue to demonstrate consistent, strong performance, as noted by today’s grades,” said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. High schools in Miami-Dade scored better School Performance Grades at a higher rate than the state average, despite changes in the grading scale and the inclusion of new components in the grading formula. A total of 43 percent of MDCPS senior high schools earned an “A”, as compared to 36 percent statewide, 74 percent of MDCPS senior high schools earned an “A” or “B”, as compared to 71 percent statewide, and 97 percent of M-DCPS senior high schools earned School Performance Grades of “C” or better, as compared to 95 percent statewide. For the fourth consecutive school year, M-DCPS has had no “F”-rated schools among its traditional senior high schools. Miami-Dade also beat the state’s average graduation rate, with 76.6 percent of students graduating, above the state average of 76.1 percent. If traditional senior high schools are considered by themselves, without the inclusion of charter schools, Miami-Dade’s graduation rate reaches 80.2 percent.

M.L. Middle School student wins Lions Club Poster contest Andy Manuel Suarez, an eighth-grade student at Miami Lakes Middle School, won the Miami Lakes Lions Club’s District Peace Poster contest for 2014. The theme of the contest was “Peace, Love and Understanding,” with each poster judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. The local contest announced three winners, who were selected last month at Miami Dade College. Suarez’s work was submitted by Miami Lakes Lion Club chairwoman Elaine Tidwell. Suarez received a certificate and was awarded a check of $300 and will go on to compete with three districts for the state’s top prize and hopefully advance to the international competition for a grand prize of $5,000. The art contest for kids, ages 11 through 13 from local schools and youth groups, encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. Suarez told The Miami Laker that his winning artwork was designed to create peace and harmony through a series of melodies, while flying around the world to spread love and peace among people who are experiencing rough times in their lives.

The first thing that popped up in my mind when the contest was announced was imagining people who love music and art and I decided to combine them for my art work.” Unlike the other contestants, Suarez only had one day to complete his peace poster work because he learned about the contest two days before the deadline entry. With no school the following day, he spent all day finishing his poster for the contest. “My art teacher, Irene Albalat, loved it,” he said. Suarez said he’s nervous about the upcoming state contest but believes he can win.
