A look ahead to what’s in store for Miami Lakes in 2016 The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes accomplished a lot of the goals that council members set in 2015, including opening the new Youth Center known as “The Spot,” completed a good portion of storm water drainage projects, opened up the new fire station, completed the Town Center zoning district map and construction of the Greenway along N.W. 77 Court, and achieved a Class Five flood insurance rating. The town also launched the town’s new mobile application, Lakes Life, for residents to track down the town’s local businesses, search for doctors, places to eat or shop, and report potholes and sidewalks that need repairing. Created by Councilmember Tony Lama, Lakes Life makes life easy for residents as more than 1,200 residents use the app to access their government and track down the Miami Lakes Moover

buses at the tip of their fingers. Also in 2015, Miami Lakes initiated the first town Traffic Summit, where town, state and county officials gathered to offer solutions to the traffic problems in the town. Following the meeting, the Miami Lakes Town Council adopted a transportation improvement plan to incorporate the proposed traffic solutions into the town’s new Strategic Plan. The year 2015 was capped off with the town’s 15th anniversary of incorporation and council members, volunteers and residents vowed to make 2016 an even better year. The town will continue with its code enforcement and building amnesty program which allows residents, who have liens placed on their properties, to come into compliance for reduced costs. After residents complete the pro-

Miami Lakes to honor Tony Nathan during Council Meeting on Jan. 5 Former Miami Dolphins running back Tony Nathan takes center stage next week when his adopted hometown pays homage to him for his performance on the field as well as his volunteer work at the Optimist Club. The Town of Miami Lakes will honor the Alabama native at the January 5 regular council meeting at Town Hall. Nathan’s personal life story was written in his book entitled “Touchdown Tony: Running with a Purpose, which inspired the 2015 movie “Woodland.

Councilmember Manny Cid sponsored legislation to celebrate Nathan’s accomplishments with a proclamation, saying his rise from high school and college to the NFL can be a benchmark for young aspiring athletes. “Miami Lakes resident and Miami Dolphins great Tony Nathan’s story serves as an inspiration to our youth, said Cid. “With hard work and a strong faith in God, all is possible. Cid also recommended that Nathan be the first-ever inductee into the Miami Lakes Sports Hall

Guard Reggie Jackson scored 18 points and Blake added 12 points, as the Pistons overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat the Heat, 93-92. Blake shot four-for-five from three-point range to help his team beat the Heat for the second consecutive time this season.

of Fame, which will be housed in the new Miami Lakes Optimist clubhouse. Nathan’s story was brought to life in the movie, which reflected on the racially-torn and turbulent period throughout the 1960s and 1970s in Alabama. But Woodland High School’s football team and head coach Tony Geralds created a bond through their faith and became one of the best teams in the country. The team’s winning streaks and state championship victory eased racial tension and brought the city together, as people had something good to root for. Nathan went on to play college football at Alabama under legendary coach Bear Bryant, was drafted by the Miami Dolphins and played in two Super Bowls under Don Shula, the NFL’s alltime winningest coach. In his nine NFL seasons, all with Miami, Nathan rushed for 3,542 yards, caught 383 receptions for 3,592 yards and 32 touchdowns. Following his retirement from football, Nathan was the running backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Francisco 49ers. He is currently a bailiff for former Dolphins’ teammate and County Court Judge Edward Newman. Nathan was inducted into the Miami Dolphins’ Ring of Honor last year at Sun Life Stadium.

New Optimist club house, new parks, more drainage, Charter Review ahead in 2016 (Continued from Page 1) gram and pay the reduced fees, the town will remove the liens from their properties. Before the program started, Town Manager Alex Rey said liens were placed on about 300 homes but most of the residents have come into compliance since the program got underway. The deadline for the amnesty program was extended to December 31, 2016, to give all residents a chance to take advantage of the program and have their liens officially removed. Also for this year, Miami Lakes is expected to open up a new dog park, complete construction of the Miami Lakes Optimist club house, and work diligently to turn the Par 3 golf course into a passive park. Miami Lakes is looking to develop the Miami Lakes Drive Bridge Park, where an Interstate 75 overpass would be converted to a pedestrian and bike friendly park, and make the town a golf cart community to help alleviate the traffic congestion. The town is planning to continue its Green Energy/PACE Initiative and the Lake Water Quality Awareness program, and complete transportation and storm water improvements for Lake Martha, Lake Sarah and Lake Hilda, and budgeted $878,500 for the town’s canal bank stabilization program. Miami Lakes will also continue its tree trimming and tree planting

program after adopting a more uniform tree planting program to reflect the beautification character of the town, and lure more businesses to the area with a marketing plan that includes a partnership with the two biggest landowners in the town. But Miami Lakes must seek funding to resume the senior classes at the two community centers for the remainder of the current fiscal year. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo donated $20,000 to Miami Lakes to underwrite the classes for six months, but the town is seeking private dollars to ensure the programs continue until the summer. Also in 2016, town officials are hoping to work with representatives of Miami-Dade Public Schools to find solutions for the overcrowding issue at some of the town’s schools, including the K-8 facilities. Reportedly, the overpopulation is negatively impacting kids’ education. The Miami Lakes Charter Review Commission has already started meeting to examine the town charter and determine if any changes are needed to the document, and 2016 will see three council members seeking reelection and the mayoral seat is up for grabs as well. Many residents are calling for new leadership in the mayoral race.

Town Council settles one Pizzi lawsuit for $460,000 By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Town Council narrowly approved an agreement to pay Mayor Michael Pizzi’s attorney fees generated from his reinstatement court cases, settling one of his two lawsuits against the town in a legal dispute that has dragged on for eight months. The next step is for both sides to resolve Pizzi’s legal fees from his criminal trial, as his lawyers are seeking $2.5 million in court costs. At a special meeting two weeks ago at Town Hall, lawmakers who voted to pay his legal team $460,000 for his reinstatement settlement to avoid additional legal expenses were Councilmembers Nelson Rodriguez, Ceasar Mestre, Tony Lama and Pizzi, who was the swing vote. Vice Mayor Tim Daubert and Councilmembers Frank Mingo and Manny Cid were the opposing voices, saying taxpayers shouldn’t be held responsible for the

mayor’s action that led to his indictment on public corruption charges in 2013. Pizzi was allowed to vote on his settlement despite some suggestions it was a conflict of interest and he should have recused himself from the dais. But one of his attorneys, Ben Kuehne, said based on state law and Miami-Dade’s Commission on Ethics, his legal opinion indicated otherwise. “In full compliance with Florida law and having researched Florida law, including the Florida Ethics on Opinion, and having communicated with Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust, there is not a conflict that exists affecting your ability to vote,” Kuehne told Pizzi. “And Florida law mandates that you must vote unless there is a clear conflict. Your failure to vote constitutes under Florida law an abandonment of your obligation.” The settlement agreement was approved but not without one council member directly scolding

Pizzi for putting the town in a difficult position. Daubert blasted the mayor for allowing council members to vote on bogus contracts that were part of the FBI sting that nabbed him in 2013. “One of the reasons I am so upset is that the night this whole thing started, we voted on the grants and you knew the companies were bogus,” Daubert told Pizzi. “You put us in a position to vote on something that was illegal, and you said not a word! That’s why it’s so hard for me to okay the town spending the money when it was all your fault!” Mingo said residents should not have to bear the costs for Pizzi’s legal problems he brought upon himself. “I don’t believe the taxpayers are responsible,” he said. “I have

Line Dancing classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 5 Miami Lakes is again offering adult Line Dancing classes twice a week through June on Tuesdays and Thursdays from at 11:30 a.m. at the Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. to stand with them and I have to vote no on this.” Regardless that the settlement was reduced from the original $750,000 Pizzi’s lawyers had requested, Cid said he’s still torn on the issue. “My position from the beginning was to bring both lawsuit cases together and come to a solution,” he said. Other council members said they were reluctant to pay for the mayor’s court cases but wanted to put an end to the financial bleeding. Mestre, a lawyer, said a recent judge’s decision rejecting the town’s request to dismiss the lawsuit was a sign of things to come. “This is a tough pill to swallow but I have to put my emotions aside if the attorneys tell you this is the right thing to do,” said Mestre, who is running for mayor in 2016. “If it was my pay check paying for it, I would probably say fight it and fight it to the end. But I can’t tell residents that we must write a check for twice the amount. We do need to stop the bleeding.” Pizzi echoed similar sentiments. “It’s time to stop the bleeding and do the best we can to move forward,” he said. Rodriguez said he wants to eschew spending more legal fees at taxpayers’ expense. “I am reluctant to vote for it,” he said. “But my decision is strictly a cost-saving measure.” Lama said he’s not happy about his decision but must do what’s in the best interest of the town. “I’m

inclined to vote for the settlement but it wasn’t without a significant amount of thought, prayer and consideration for residents who were put in this position,” Lama said. Kuehne told council members negotiating a settlement was an example of both parties working diligently and not cause taxpayers more court courts. “Negotiating the settlement is an example of the success that results from excellent lawyers, including those representing the town led by Town Attorney Raul Gastesi and Pizzi’s legal team discussing the mayor’s cases in good faith.” According to Town Manager Alex Rey, a portion of the $460,000 was taken from the town’s surplus that was carried over from last year’s budget, and the $250,000 Miami Lakes put aside to pay his court fees after Pizzi filed his lawsuits. He said the town’s municipal services will not be impacted by the budget loss. “They would not interrupt the current delivery of services,” Rey said. In addition to the settlement agreement, lawmakers tapped the law firm of Trujillo Vargas Ortiz and Gonzalez to represent Miami Lakes in its lawsuit against the insurance carrier, which refused to cover any of Pizzi’s legal expenses, to recover the reinstatement costs and pay his criminal trial fees. The firm will bill the town at a rate of $350 an hour but has agreed to handle the case on a contingency basis – no recovery, no fees – except for required expenses.

More than 1,800 people participated in the first annual Breanna Vergara 5K on December 13 at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West commemorating the life of resident and avid dancer Breanna Vergara, 11, who fell unexpectedly to sudden cardiac arrest last year. Miami Lakes elected officials and their families participated in the run and presented the Vergara family with a proclamation proclaiming December 13 as Breanna Vergara Day. With proceeds from the run, the Breanna Vergara Foundation presented Niklaus Children’s Hospital with a check for $25,000. Following Breanna’s death, the hospital continued offering free pediatric EKG screenings which have already helped to identify children at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. The Foundation has donated a total of four automatic external defibrillators (AED) including one that was donated to Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and School at the 5K run. The Foundation has worked tirelessly promoting its mission to promote a healthy, happy, and passionate lifestyle by offering opportunities for children to participate in extracurricular activities while also creating awareness of heart screenings in an effort to identify kids at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

Town, county and FDOT officials seek traffic solutions By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Councilmembers Tony Lama and Nelson Rodriguez, who initiated the town’s first Transportation Summit, recently met with FDOT and county officials during a lunch meeting to explore more ways to alleviate the traffic gridlock throughout the 6.5 square-mile city. Equally frustrated residents said the traffic gridlock, during peak hours in the morning and afternoon, along N.W. 67 Avenue to the Palmetto Expressway, Miami Lakes Drive, N.W. 87 Avenue and 170 Street, continue to be problems with no solutions in sight. Following the Transportation Summit in July, the Town Council

adopted a transportation improvement plan to incorporate into the town’s new Strategic Plan to offer some solutions to the traffic plights on the city’s busiest roadways. The proposal included traffic signal priority at intersections utilizing technology and more police; improvement of pedestrian connections across N.W. 67 Avenue within Town Center; pedestrian infrastructure improvements to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities ACT requirements for pedestrian facilities throughout Miami Lakes; facilitate carpooling of trips for drop-off and pick-up of school children; connect the existing and future greenways on N.W. 170

Street; N.W. 67 Avenue via N.W. 169 Street; and extend N.W. 59 Avenue south to Miami Lakes Drive. But the recommendations are just the tip of the ice berg, as state, county and town officials still have a long way to go to resolve additional traffic problems, especially the new mega mall with a theme park that will be built to the north of Miami Lakes. Miami Lakes residents have to bear the brunt of the traffic gridlock, stuck for about an hour in bumper-to-bumper congestion while trying to get to work in the morning and return home in the afternoon. After learning about Lama’s and Rodriguez’s lunch meeting with state and county officials, residents offered their own solutions to the roadway congestion, which were posted on the lawmakers’ Facebook pages. “You should consider opening up the I-75 ramp on Miami Lakes Drive past N.W. 87 Avenue,” said Margaret Magic. “The ramp is there but they never did anything. All traffic trying to get I-75 would be redirected. Lots of people get the Palmetto just to get to I-75.’ Betty Rubio Leoncio said the traffic is horrendous going west on Miami Lakes Drive from the McDonalds to the new Miami Lakes West fire station. She said the issue can be resolved easily by putting a “No U-Turn” sign where most motorists are making a U-turn and cutting in front of everyone already in line on Miami Lakes Drive heading west. “That means these drivers would have to go only one block further to then make a U-turn, defeating their purpose of not waiting the extra four minutes of staying in the line to exit the Palmetto and already go west,” she said. “We should post one police officer where that “No U Turn” sign is. Whoever makes a U-turn gets a ticket.”

MIAMI LAKES COUNCILMEMBERS Tony Lama (seated on the left) and Nelson Rodriguez (standing) meet with county and FDOT traffic engineers to discuss the town’s traffic congestion. Rodriguez responded, saying the town doesn’t control the roads. “FDOT, MDX and the county are the agency’s that we have to work with to find solutions,” he said. “Government at its finest. I’ll also invite the town’s police commander to review your concerns about the police.” Mayra Quintero said traffic on the west side has gotten worse since the town and county opened up N.W. 87 Avenue. “It’s been a nightmare,” she said. “Morning and afternoon rush

hours are as bad as the Palmetto.” Lama said a workshop will be scheduled sometime this year to discover additional solutions to the traffic problems. “There are planned changes to the flow of traffic as it is today,” he said.” We will be having a workshop next year to share the ideas with the community.” Juan C. Fernandez summed it up. “We need all the help we could get,” he said.

Pace High’s STEM Academy for Computer Technologies visits NAP of the Americas By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Fourteen students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s STEM Academy Emerging Computer Technologies Program got to see the pinnacle of technology in South Florida when they visited Verizon Terremark’s NAP of the Americas data center and Internet exchange point in downtown Miami in midNovember. The NAP (Network Access Point) functions essentially as the heart of the Internet for Latin America as it connects South America and the Caribbean to the rest of the world. The students, who study programming, computer science, computer graphics, and

web design as part of their Academy classes, toured the massive complex and witnessed the intricate systems and technology at work. They were joined on the trip not only by Ricardo Machado, Pace’s director of Technology, but also by Pace principal Ana Garcia. Garcia, who was visiting the data center for the first time, says she “wanted to find out about the ultimate in technology and see what technology could have in store for the future. “For this group of kids, said Machado, “they were able to see technology and what they are studying in action.

The EDGE (The Early Development of Global Education) Charitable Foundation annually delivers over 1,000 toys to migrant families, children victimized by domestic abuse, and children victimized by human trafficking in South Florida.

“Our toy drive is one of our biggest events for giving back to the community because of the children we serve right here in South Florida,” said The EDGE founder Mercy Hernandez. “After seven years of this partnership, the event continues to be successful due to the generous support of our employees and members,” said Mio Serrano, JetStream’s VP of Human Resources, and an executive board member of The EDGE.

Mater Academy’s Judy Marty named Tax Watch Elite Principal of the Year By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Judy Marty is the catalyst for her school’s rise to success. As the principal of Mater Academy Charter Middle/High and Performing Arts Academy, she has taken her school to new heights, from a little known facility in Hialeah to a National Blue Ribbon Award winner and invitations to showcase her students’ talents during statewide competitions. And an independent research institute and government watchdog organization has been taking notice and honored Marty for her leadership. Marty won the 2015-2016 Florida Tax Watch Elite Principal of the Year award during a ceremony held in her honor at her school, 7901 N.W. 103 Street in Hialeah. The honor is given to principals whose students exceed expectations in learning gains in high-risk schools, where students’ achievement gains in reading and mathematics demonstrated Marty’s “incredible leadership skills in education.” The Florida TaxWatch Elite Principal Award, which was created four years ago, honors two principals statewide from elementary, middle and high schools who have demonstrated excellent leadership skills in turning around their schools. Marty, who has been the principal of Mater Academy since the school opened up in 2002, said she had no idea she was even nominated for the honor. “I was surprised,” she told The Miami Laker. “I said ‘who nominated me?’ I didn’t know anything about it.” Marty said she oversees a school with 3,400 students from sixth to 12th grade. She said she’s has an open door policy and is “very” visible during the entire school day, walking the

halls, visiting classrooms, meeting with teachers, department heads and parents. “I have expectations for everybody in the school,” she said. “We are beating the odds.” Beyond the classrooms, Marty is supporting her student-athletes on the playing fields. She attends their games and let her students know that she’s in the crowd cheering them on. “I am showing them that someone cares about them,” she said. Marty’s school will have an opportunity to present itself at a showcase conference in Central Florida in 2016.

Mater Academy Charter School student-athlete Emily Acosta was named a finalist for the 2015-2016 Wendy’s High School Heisman, a four sport student-athlete who’s looking for her best season this school year. The senior plays basketball, flag football and runs cross country and track for Mater. For basketball, so far, Emily is averaging 15 points, six assists and five steals per game. Last year, the point guard was named to The Miami Herald AllDade First Team. Emily was thrilled to be named a finalist for the Heisman award, which only inspires her to push herself more. “It was an amazing accomplishment but the road doesn’t end there,” she said. “I looking to do more during my senior year.” Her cross country team reached the state tournament last month, where she finished in 10th place.

The Miami Lakes Optimist Heat All Stars competed at the November Knockout Tournament in Weston and brought home the runner-up trophy, as a farewell event for some of the players who are headed to college. The girls went 3-1, losing their first game in the final round. Offensively, they exceeded their own expectations and led the tournament with the most runs scored. Defensively, they were on their game. “We are all very happy with their performance,” said the team’s manager Alex Castroman. “We want to thank all of our parents for their continued support of the Miami Lakes Heat Team.

Spanish Lake Elementary chorus and cheerleaders spread holiday joy The Christmas film “Elf” is full of memorable lines, among them is “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!” The students at Spanish Lake Elementary (SLE) School agreed with the sentiment and decided to go above and beyond previous years in giving back to the community. Through the efforts of music teachers, Diana Garcia, and Jackson Bunn, the students were scheduled to perform and entertain at the Schott Communities, a center for the deaf and disabled. Under the guidance of Ludy

Compagines, the SLE cheerleaders would be able to interact with the patients directly after their performance cheering, singing, and dancing, Schott Communities is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1986 to address the needs of persons who are deaf or who are physically or intellectually challenged in South Florida. The agency is an extension of the ministry of the Archdiocese of Miami for this special population. The students came up with a plan to raise funds needed for the bus and to bring in a small stuffed

animal to share with each Schott student at the end of the program. In addition, each Schott student received a handmade card. The true meaning of the holiday season, a time for giving and a time for spreading joy was celebrated. In return, the smiles on the SLE’s student’s faces from rejoicing in the participation and being thankful for the opportunity fulfilled to themselves that they had accomplished something useful…enriching another human being’s life. SLE students decided to start a new tradition: spreading joy!

Basulto, Special to The Miami Laker Over 60 students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School put on their best suits and dresses to celebrate their induction into Pace’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) on December 3. The NHS Induction Ceremony is an annual tradition taking place in the school’s Spartan Center where exceptional students are officially welcomed into the organization. Students must exhibit NHS’ four pillars of scholastic performance, service, leadership skills, and overall character in order to be invited by a faculty council to join. Those inducted included 25 sophomores, 24 juniors, and 14 seniors (one of the largest induction groups in the past several years) were welcomed into the

society at the 2015 ceremony accompanied by their parents and their fellow NHS peers. The evening began with speeches from Pace principal Ana Garcia and NHS adviser Luis Mayo congratulating both the students and their parents on their journey to this moment. The NHS student executive board then spoke in turn about each of the four pillars and NHS president Maya Lora asked the new inductees to rise and read the NHS induction pledge together. Following this, the inductees were called up to the stage oneby-one to be presented with their certificates and to light their individual candle in a traditional ritual with their grade level. After prayer, the evening concluded with dinner and dessert for the inductees and their families.

Spanish Lake Elementary students reach out to unsung American heroes in Turkey Spanish Lake Elementary students from Anne Burke-Stephen’s third grade class united together to send items and gifts of love to deployed military personnel in Turkey and their dogs. Burke-Stephens met a young serviceman’s wife while shopping in Babies-R-Us. In conversation, the woman mentioned her husband was deployed to Turkey. Each serviceman in this unit has a trained dog helping to protect our freedom in the USA and the per-

sonnel’s safety in Turkey. Sharing this with her students, the class decided to express their thanks with letters from home to these brave military personnel and “yummy” touches (approved gifts for dogs) for their four-legged friends across the globe. Through this service project, the third graders showed their love and respect across the miles to the military personnel and man’s best friend.

Mater Academy hosts Read-A-Thon On December 15, the Mater Academy FBLA Chapter organized the first FBLA Read-a-Thon. The event was attended by over 150 elementary school students from both Mater Elementary and Mater Gardens. The project centered on eight stations where chapter members read children books such as

Cinderella and The Lion King. Chapter members also dressed up as the characters in the stories and acted out the scenes as they were read. There was a station for the children to decorate pillow cases and one to make book marks. Soon after the stories were read, the children were pleasantly surprised by the appearance of Billy

the Marlin, the Miami Marlin’s mascot. The students had an opportunity to take pictures and meet the mascot. The feedback from the elementary students was overwhelmingly positive, describing it as one of the best field trips they ever had.

Miami Herald publisher Alexandra Villoch visits M.L. Educational Ctr. By Vivian Bermudez Special to The Miami Laker Alexandra Villoch, the slender and well-dressed publisher of The Miami Herald, was quick to make one thing clear as she addressed The Harbinger staff recently, “I am not a journalist, but I run The Miami Herald.” And it is true, she never worked as a journalist. Earning a degree in business by the age of 21, Villoch has always been a standout and, while her manicured hands don’t show it, it was a grueling and long climb to the top. Wherever she went, whether it was her first job at the now out-of-business Eastern Airlines, or when she worked as United Airlines’ general manager, or beginning a new phase of her career at the Herald, she was met with raised eyebrows and whispered grumblings about her supposed inexperience, especially from her male co-workers. She shared a story from the early part of her career, when she was new at Eastern Airlines; they asked her to fetch coffee and she did – she was new, the youngest at the board table, the only woman, and the only one there with an MBA. She got the coffee. However, when she brought it back, it spilled, an event she called “an accident” – an accident that sent a message. They should get their own coffee. “There would always be the ‘What is she doing here? She doesn’t know anything,’” Villoch said as she reflected on her entrance to The Miami Herald. But her lack of so-called “experience” in the journalism field, and the sexism that she faced did not deter her. Instead, Villoch took the approach she carried all her life. Much like the exuberant student in class always raising their hand, she was the one raising her hand during meetings, asking for more work, putting herself on the line. “There is nothing like asking your boss to take care of one of their problems,” she said with a smile. “You want to be the one in the front row. If you do that, you’ll be a standout.” She was one in a hundred. She succeeded David Landsberg as publisher of the Herald in 2014. Her position makes the Herald the only newspaper in the country to have a female in the top four ranks. With an average readership of one million subscription readers, and a website that attracts millions of hits in web traffic from around the world, and brings the average digital reader back to their website 18 times a day, Villoch is winning the fight against the “dying” newspaper industry, doing what she’s always done – learning, observing and evolving. “What we produce is information – good, high-quality information,” she said. “There is a place

Montessori Children’s House joins in Samartian’s Purse Christmas program The Montessori Children’s House in Miami Lakes participated in the Samartian’s Purse Christmas program for the 2015 holiday season. The children at the school packed shoe boxes with goodies, wrapping them and joining with other churches, schools, and organizations to bring a smile

to the faces of children across the globe. For some of the recipients, this may be the first gift ever received along with the communication of the Gospel. The shoe boxes had personal notes within them to express a message of hope.
