Mater Lakes Thespians present High School Musical By Jaily Gomez Special to The Miami Laker The Mater Lakes Academy Thespians have begun working on their winter musical, Disney’s High School Musical. After a successful run of their last production, The Wizard of Oz, the Thespians are eager to return to the stage with a much more modern show. High School Musical is a show many of MLA’s students will be familiar with, having grown up with the film. This stage adaptation carries the same tone as the original, with a few new fun surprises to keep audiences on their toes. Long time fans will recognize their favorites scenes, while first time viewers will be delighted by the high energy songs and dances. High School Musical tells a story everyone can relate to – the tale of high school cliques, and what it means to fit

in and be yourself. The lead roles of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez will be played by sophomore Lucas Menvielle and freshman Kaitlyn Gonzalez. Menvielle played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, making this his second performance with the MLA Thespians. This is Gonzalez’s first major role in a Mater Lakes dramatic production. Ryan and Sharpay Evans, the brother-and-sister antagonists of the show, will be portrayed by seniors Jorge Lopez and Andrea Burns. This will be the first show with Mater Lakes for both performers. High School Musical runs for three days, December 20 to 22, in the Lehman Theater at Miami Dade College North campus. Tickets are $10 at the door. For more information, visit the school’s website at www.materlakes.org.

Final weekend for Iphi Aulis at the Main Stree

This is the final weekend, December 15-17, to enjoy the Main Street Players production of Iphigenia in Aulis which has been well received by audiences and critics alike. At the end of each performance, the talented cast of actors have been greeted with standing ovations and words of praise by those in attendance. “In Miami, a city that grows quickly on an artistic and cultural level, and to those who still proclaim it a ‘cultural wasteland,” that gives us so many options, at the same time that is difficult deciding which one to attend, it is not very common to enjoy classical Greek theater of the highest professional quality with magnificent actors. It is a unique opportunity that lovers of good theater should not waste,” wrote José Abreu Felippe, el Nuevo Herald. The show is directed by Isaac MATER LAKES THESPIANʼS cast for the High School Polanco with Danny Nieves as Musical include (from left) Robert Merkel, Isabella Orsolini, the production manager. The Lucas Menvielle, Kaitlyn Gonzalez, Andrea Burns and Jorge cast features Agamenon played Lopez.

straight on why the agreement was subject to litigation. Lawmakers approved a resolution following a second and final public hearing on amending the N.W. 87th Avenue Development Agreement, and settling several lawsuits against the town brought by the original developer of the 2011 accord. The agreement, which opened up N.W. 87th Avenue between N,W. 154 and 162 streets, was part of the Lowell Dunn family’s site plans to build residential housing units and a shop-

ing the original developer was still responsible for some of the street upgrades to accommodate the additional traffic from the residential development. “The intent was the first permit that was pulled, whoever pulled it would do all of the improvements,” Dunn said. “That was part of the deal. When I heard about the mobility fee, the council asked Juan Mayol who will make the other improvements and he said the Dunns.” According to Town Manager

ment. In other Council actions: • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to establish a new salary for Mayor Manny Cid, which would grow annually commensurate with the Consumer Price Index for South Florida. The CPI is used to adjust lawmakers’ reimbursements on a yearly basis. The mayor currently earns $18,000 a year, which hasn’t changed since the town incorporated in 2000. According to the town, as of August 2017, the index of 2.3 percent is the closet to the town’s previous fiscal year, which ended on September 30. The salary increase for the current year will be $414.00, giving the mayor a $18,414 a year salary. The increase of $414 amounts to $1.13 per day. • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to change the qualifying period for a special election in August

Strategic Plan. The program was designed to enhance mobility for easier vehicular and non-vehicular transportation by requiring streets to be planned, designed, operated and maintained to enable safe, convenient and comfortable travel and access for users of all people of ages and abilities regardless of their mode of transportation. In 2016, the town received grant funding in the amount of $40,000 from Miami-Dade County’s Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) for the creation of Complete Street Program with a Town match of $10,000. Kimley Horn and Associates was contracted to develop the Program. • Council members approved a resolution authorizing the town manager to enter into a local funding agreement with FDOT for the design of N.W. 146 Street and N.W. 159 Street

Hialeah Gardens Midd students making Christm Two students at Hialeah Gardens Middle School, Kiara Llaugert and Gabriela Faedo, are making the Christmas brighter for those who are in need. Kiara Llaugert is an 8th-grade student and president of the DFYIT Club (Peer Counselors). For the past 2 years she has rallied the school to participate in Operation Christmas Child, a project she took on as her own. She registered, bought 100 boxes and most of the supplies herself, and packed all 100 boxes making sure every child will be happy. The outpouring of help from the school student body was over-

whelming. The 100 boxes were filled in no time. Kiara with the help of her Mother Nelva, then transported the 100 boxes to a local church where she negotiated a deal for the church to pay for the shipping cost. These boxes are shipped throughout the world to the most needed children out there. Gabriela Faedo is an 8thgrade student and is vice president of the DFYIT Club (Peer Counselors). For the past two years, she presented to DFYIT a project to help the children living in The Village South whose parents are currently in recovery. Gaby recruited 20 peer counselors to adopt a child.

getting stuck in traffic? We cannot ignore these questions anymore, nor can the answers be the status quo. We need a simple and commonsense approach. What we’ve done for the past 30 years in Miami-Dade County doesn’t work. Stand at any intersection in Miami-Dade during rushhour traffic and you will be immediately convinced that we are failing. Miami Lakes is trying to find solutions. We’ve reformed the process by which new developments impacting traffic get put into effect. Previously, developers would submit traffic studies and negotiate development agreements that never mitigated the traffic impact – hence, why we have gridlock today.

teacher didn’t think she understood English therefore was placed in an ESOL class. In grade two, she was placed in a Chapter 1 remedial class. She felt quite defeated until her teacher inspired her to believe in herself which led her to receive a district achievement award. From then on, she realized that one day, she could fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. Varas-Caraballo continued her quest by graduating from the Miami-Dade Public School system completing an associates degree at Miami Dade College, and then graduating from FIU with honors on a full scholarship. Nothing would deter her from her goal. Despite working full time during college for a prominent ophthalmologist who did not agree with her field of study (elementary education), she knew she could make a difference in the lives of her students. Growing and learning for 17 years as an educator, she feels that we are not guaranteed tomorrow, and we must make the best of every situation. With great loss comes perseverance. Last year was the loss of her precious grandmother, her cherished friend who was also an educator, and a treasured student. Varas-Caraballo is a highly effective Nationally Board Certified educator. She is the recipient of numerous grants which have been instrumental in filling her classroom with items to enhance her student’s educational endeavors and her creative learning projects with them. She has earned numerous leadership positions at the school and within the community. Presently, she is dedicated to being the co-chairperson of Robotics and STEAM programs at Spanish Lake. A devoted wife, mother of three and a dedicated teacher, she has the privilege to help shape the minds of many children. She considers her students to be her own children for the little time the are in her class. Her goal is to inspire children to be kind-hearted and to think outside-of-the-box in order to change the world in a positive way.

the history of the world is measured…the birth of Jesus. I have often wondered if the original players of the Christmas story would recognize the modern North American Christmas season as somehow associated with the

So, let us remember that the first Christmas was as simple and as humble as it was glorious. The first Christmas was about a humble woman who, while yet a young virgin, bore the indignity of being pregnant out of wedlock.

Most of all, the first Christmas was about Jesus, who Christians believe, and the Bible teaches, is God incarnate…the Savior of the world. He came to earth to bring peace between God and man. He came to offer forgiveness and eternal life as a free gift. Yet in spite of His divine credentials He was born in a manger in a tiny town on the outskirts of the vast Roman Empire. This “King of Glory” came not garbed in royal attire. There was no crown on His head that night. Instead He came in the form of a baby who was eventually swathed by old cloths in a simple manger. It was a scant beginning to the most fantastic life that has ever been lived. This Christmas as we busy ourselves with the hustle and bustle of putting everything together for the 24th and 25th of December, let us allow our minds to be taken back to the first Christmas and the real reason why we experience love, hope, and joy, during this season. It is because in a simple and humble manner, God offered mankind the greatest gift we could ever receive. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Puerto Ricans. Now that we are older, wiser and people of faith, we realize that there would be no Christmas if God had not sent the “Lamb.” When Jesus is called the Lamb of God in John 1:29 and John 1:36, it is referring to Him as the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for sin. In order to understand who Christ was and what He did, we must begin with the Old Testament, which contains prophecies concerning the coming of Christ as a “guilt offering” (Isaiah 53:10). In fact, the whole sacrificial system established by God in the Old Testament set the stage for the coming of Jesus Christ, who is the perfect sacrifice God would provide as atonement for the sins of His people (Romans 8:3, Hebrews 10). It is not surprising to me now that I’ve been to the Holy Land, to understand who the Lamb is. I stood at the place called the “Shepherd’s Field.” At the birthplace of Jesus in nearby Bethlehem - the Shepherds would know Jesus because he would be the only newborn and as is well known from the often told Christmas story found in the Gospel of Luke 2, Mary wrapped her newborn son “in swaddling clothes” (Luke 2:7). What on earth were swaddling clothes, and why would Luke

As we approach Christmas of 2017, my heart is heavy around the recent massacre of 305 Sufi Muslims, worshipping in a mosque, and 26 members of 1st Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, worshipping in church. I can’t help but be concerned about the state of affairs in the world today. There’s slavery in Libya, terrorism all over the world, and intimidation and threats of nuclear proliferation from North Korea. But sometimes it’s hard for us to concern ourselves with issues in nations far away, as we are overwhelmed with our own issues. Homelessness, hunger, unemployment, health care, taxes, sexual harassment, and violence, are just some of the issues we currently struggle with as a nation today. Where’s the “Good News?” The “Good News” came with the birth of a baby boy, more than 2000 years ago in a city called Bethlehem. A baby boy born in a stable, lying in a manger, born to a virgin named Mary, who was engaged to a man named Joseph. And the Holy Scriptures tell us… And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the

l

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a KEITH manger. And sudSCOTT denly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:10-14 And as we celebrate Christmas this year, let us be reminded that Jesus is the “Good News.” Jesus is Immanuel “God with us.” In spite of all the darkness in the world today, Jesus is the light that gives us hope, peace, joy, and love. So, as we find ourselves in a world gone wrong, Christmas is a time of hope for the world. Christmas is a time of peace in the world. Christmas is a time of joy to the world. And during this season of gift giving, there’s no greater gift to us, than the birth of Jesus. Share the gift of Christmas this year by sharing the gift of love. There’s no greater gift that we can give than love. May you and your families have a joyous, peaceful, hopeful, and wonderful Christmas. May you and your families be filled with the gift of love.

reveal the fullness of beauty, unity and hope which is always in our midst, but which our eyes are often clouded from seeing. Jesus came to shed light on the goodness of our existence. Consequently, Jesus is regarded as the light of the world! May the reality of Christmas therefore serve us well! As the light in the afternoon sky grows day by day beyond Christmas, may the lights of our vision also grow so we may all the more cherish the beauty, unity and hope we already know and allow the spirit of this time to enhance it. To people of all creeds, countries and cultures here in our local community, may this Christmas be for you, your loved ones and us all at a time of great light – a time to celebrate the blessings which are uniquely ours!

time, they watched in wonder at God's redemptive activity. They watched God create man in His image…They watched man rebel against his Creator...They watched God promise to send a Savior to redeem mankind. They watched God graciously keep His people throughout the Old Testament as a testimony to His promise to bring forth a Savior from those people, Israel. They then watched as the Father sent His Son, Jesus, born of a virgin. A multitude of them announced Christ’s birth and declared God’s glory …They watched Christ live the perfect life that man was supposed to live in obedience to God’s moral law…They watched in horror as Christ was beaten and
