It’s official. Miami Lakes residents living in the county’s special taxing districts for security guard gates and lakes maintenance overwhelmingly approved a mail-in ballot election to transfer responsibility for the various districts to the town to maintain them under the town’s standards. The January 24 special election reported that an estimated 82 percent of the residents living in six special taxing district neighborhoods voted for the take over while an estimated nine percent voted no. In Loch Lomond, 89 percent (156 votes) of the residents agreed with Miami Lakes gaining control over their guard gate district, In Lake Patricia, 88 percent (45 votes) of the residents voted

yes for the town to maintain their lake in the center of their neighborhood. Residents in Lake Hilda had similar results with 87 percent (64 votes) approving turning over their lake to Miami Lakes. In the Miami Lakes Section One neighborhood, 80 percent (241 votes) of the residents approved the mail-in ballot. For the security guard gate districts, residents living in the Royal Oaks East neighborhood overwhelmingly said yes with 92 percent (205 votes); and the Royal Oaks Section One neighborhood reported that 86 percent (209 votes) voted yes. Since Miami Lakes incorporated in 2000, one of the town’s goals was to gain control over the special taxing districts and maintain them under its standards.

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Educational Center’s (MLEC) student newspaper, The Harbinger, has come up with a campus-wide hashtag, #HOMLEC, or Humans of Miami Lakes Educational Center. Inspired by Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton, students have to find someone they’ve never met or talked to before and try to find out a personal detail about their subject’s life that others may not know about. Themes can range from issues at home, bullying or academic struggles. Students then decide in-class whether the photo of the subject and their background story would be appropriate to share on social media. The hashtag was created back in 2016 by Maria Vazquez, who is now in Florida State University. Current senior Alexandra Reboredo is editorin-chief of the newspaper as well as the yearbook. She also helps oversee the photos before

posting them on social media sites. Reboredo holds herself to the caliber of a professional journalist, even at just 17 years old. She is expected to attend Hamilton College in New York to pursue her passion in Journalism. She’s also attending under the Posse scholarship, a grant that provides a fully paid four-year degree. Supervised by teacher Neyda Borges, the class runs like a small newsroom. Once the time comes to present their photo and story, classmates discuss what needs fixing. Rather than focusing on grades, they discuss what they can do to improve themselves as student journalists. “It became something way bigger than we imagined,” said Reboredo. At the beginning of every year, students at MLEC anticipate one of these rookie journalists coming up to them asking to share their story. Their subjects can range from fellow students MLECʼs Harbinger Newspaper team with editor-in-chief (Alexandra Reboredo in bottom row second from the left and journalism adviser Neyda Borges, right.) (Please see Page 2)

MONSIGNOR EDWARD PACE HIGHʼS cheerleading team won first place at the 2018 Florida Cheer and Dance Association (FCDA) East Coast Challenge, putting the Spartans one step closer to winning the state championship. The event took place at Palm Beach Central High School, where the Spartans competed against other schools in a series of dance and cheerleading routines and emerged victorious. The FCDA state championship takes place in April in Miami Gardens.

Schweitzer-Ramos & Diaz family law firm nominated for Client Satisfaction honor By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Schweitzer-Ramras & Diaz, P.A., a family law attorney office at 7975 N.W. 154 Street, has been nominated for a client satisfaction award. The American Institute of Family Attorneys (AIOFLA) nominated the Miami Lakes-based office as one of the 10 Best Law Firms in Florida For Client Satisfaction. “I do my job, and I take it very seriously. I do it with passion, and I think people can see that,” managing partner Madelin Diaz said. The American Institute of Family Attorneys is an attorneyrating organization that issues a list of top 10 law offices in each state. The selection process is based on customer as well as peer nominations through research and AIOFLA’S own evaluation. Because clients are a law office’s top priority, AIOFLA’s list shows potential clients how that office rates among others in reference as to how they treat patrons. It all began with Marshall Schweitzer in 1990 along with his daughter, Darlene Schweitzer-Ramas. After the need for more family law legal services grew, Diaz joined the firm. After the loss of Darlene in 2012, Diaz became the sole partner and has been managing the firm since then. As tribute to her late partner, Diaz kept her name in the logo. “I try to not only to be an

Known for her passion and fairness, it came as no surprise when she was nominated for this award. For as long as she can remember, Diaz always wanted to be an attorney. “Since I was a little girl, everyone called me the public defender of the family,” Diaz said. The agency was not always in Miami Lakes. Although Diaz has been a resident since 1989, the office itself hadn’t moved into the area until 2014. But besides practicing for their future careers, Reboredo emphasizes the important role this project plays in her school’s community. “We create a connection with that person we interview, because in order to get the personal story we can’t just say ‘hey, tell me something no one knows about,’” Reboredo said. “We create a bond with one another so they know they have an emotional support system. A lot of the time it makes them realize that people they may not know at school can be just as supportive as their closest friends.” To view these #HOMLEC stories, visit their Twitter at @HarbingerMLEC or visit their website at www.mlecharbinger.wordpress.com.

Miami Lakes Chamber hosts Beacon Council president Michael Finney on Feb. 14

Michael A. Finney, president and CEO of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, will be the guest speaker at the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce’s next membership luncheon on Wednesday, February 14, at Shula’s Hotel on Main Street. The organization’s monthly gathering opens for networking at 11:30 a.m. followed by the luncheon at noon. The deadline to reserve a table is February 9 at noon. To reserve, call Marta Diaz at 305556-2212, or email mdiaz@ miamilakeschamber. com. The Beacon Council serves as the official economic development organization for MiamiDade County and focuses on job creation and economic growth. Since 1985, the organization has assisted more than 980 businesses that have created more than 65,000 direct jobs and added more than $4 billion in new capital investments. As the Beacon Council’s top leader, Finney champions the

MICHAEL FINNEY County’s efforts to market Miami-Dade as a world class business destination, grow local companies and help shape the county’s economic future. Prior to his current role, Finney served Michigan Governor Rick Snyder as Senior Adviser for Economic Growth and president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

Southeast Computer Solutions is unlike any other IT company By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Located in the iconic “White House” building at 15165 N.W. 77 Avenue, in Suite 2009 lies a computer solutions company unlike any other. Southeast Computer Solutions (SCS) was founded 30 years ago by president and chief executive officer, Sonia Ferrera. Born from Cuban descent, Ferrera lived in Fairview, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until she turned 15. Since then, she has lived in Miami and is currently a Miami Lakes resident in Royal Oaks. SCS is a company that provides Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) to larger businesses. ERP is vital because it’s a software that manages a busi-

ness’s activities. These responsibilities can include accounting, distribution, production, customer services and human resources. SCS’s specialty is in processing the manufacturing of liquids and chemicals. A common software that’s used by this company, Sage 100, is a pivotal foundation used by companies to make better business decisions and increase profit. But SCS doesn’t just stop at software; widely known for their holiday decorations, SCS plans out a three month long holiday decoration plan. Because of Ferrera’s birthday on Halloween, the whole office is ghoulishly decorated to resemble a haunted house. For Thanksgiving and autumn, a

pumpkin patch sprouts up with crystal decorations. Finally, for the grand finale, the whole office is decorated (literally) from top to bottom for the holiday season. Ferrera even references it to look like New York’s Fifth Avenue during Christmas. With football season coming to an end with the Super Bowl, SCS is planning something extra special to commemorate the occasion. “I have a rule that people shouldn’t work the day after the Super Bowl,” Ferrera said. “So we come in at noon, have mimosas, and I cater in lunch and drink some more.” Although having a day off after the Super Bowl isn’t very common, Ferrera stresses the importance of holidays and how it affects the office morale.

Marguerite Bucchino celebrates her 100 years THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Marguerite Bucchino has enjoyed a full century of life. Bucchino was born in Brockton, Massachusetts on January 27, 1918. Her father was Italian and her mother was French Canadian and Cherokee. Bucchino’s late husband built ships during World War II, and every couple of years the family would take a trip down to Miami Beach during the winter. It was during one of those trips that she decided to move down to South Florida permanently. After the war, in December 1946, the Bucchino family

packed their bags and headed to downtown Miami. They finally made their way to Miami Lakes in 1984, over 17 years before the town was even incorporated as a municipality in MiamiDade County. Her son Richard Bucchino takes her to monthly meetings at Our Lady of the Lakes so she could spend time with her community as well as her closest friends. Town’s first manager praises 17 years of progress PAGE 8

FEBRUARY 2, 2018 THE MIAMI LAKER

An old familiar face recently stopped by Miami Lakes Town Hall, where he was honored for serving as the first town manager and laying the foundation that has led to a successful fullfledged city.

During the January 16 Town Council meeting, Mayor Manny Cid and council members paid homage to Merrett Stierheim, who guided Miami Lakes after incorporation in 2001 as the city’s temporary town manager

while leading a national search for his permanent replacement. Stierheim was the brainchild of the town’s Strategic Plan and dissolved the taxing districts for parks which now allows all residents to enjoy the amenities including the tot-lots, beach parks and picnic parks. He also crafted the town’s first municipal budget and negotiated the initial police contract with Miami-Dade, as Miami Lakes became the first city to use the county’s police services instead of starting its own police department from scratch. Stierheim, who had two long stints as county manager and steered the City of Miami out of financial insolvency in 1996, ran the day-to-day operations for Miami Lakes from a store

front on Main Street. “We are running and getting things done but we are able to get things done because of the foundation that was set for us,” Cid said while presenting Stierheim with a proclamation. “When you walk into town hall and see the seal, it represents Mr. Stierheim who donated it and the people who helped create it. When future generations come in here, they learn the history and hard work that our founding fathers have done for us.” Miami Lakes’ first mayor, Wayne Slaton, who picked Stierheim to serve as the town manager, said the then-newlyminted municipality was so fortunate to have him on board at the time. “I hope we realize how fortunate this community is,” Slaton

said. “As wonderful the community was thought of and developed by the Graham family, we were a little community and the person we got, if you lived in Dade County for 40 years, came in to be our first manager. He was a county manager and superintendent for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which is the fourth largest school district in the United States. We were very, very lucky to get this gentlemen to come here. Merrett Stierheim is the epitome of professionalism.” Stierheim was honored and said Miami Lakes has come a long way since incorporation. “There’s a special place in my heart for this city,” he said. “You have progressed and I’m so grateful to you.”

TOWN OF MIAMI LAKES first town manager, Merritt Steirheim, is reunited with current manager Alex Rey and Miami Lakes’ first mayor Wayne Slaton during the January 16 Town Council meeting.

Auditions will be held at the Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street, on Monday, February 6 and Tuesday, February 7, from 79:30 p.m. Callbacks will be on February 8 from 7-9:30 p.m. The play is about how people miss connections with each other during unexpected events. It emphasizes the idea of how life is unpredicted from moment to moment. Seven characters will be introduced and here are their breakdowns: Scottie Ward – A woman in her 70’s who is fearless, resilient and secretive. She is sharp-witted despite physical limitations. Tim Ward – Scottie’s son, who is in his late 20’s. A writer who is struggling for his path to success, he has an ironic sense of humor. Beth Ward – Scottie’s daughter, who is in her late 30’s. Se is adventurous, unsettled and always on edge. Bernadette – Scottie’s aide,

an African-American woman in her 30’s. She has been aiding Scottie for the past four years. She’s a calming influence that masks her own family issues. Rhonda – Bernadette’s younger sister who is in her late 20’s, is also African-American. She’s very odd and spiritual, but still very likable. She works at a funeral home as well. Claire – Tim’s quirky exgirlfriend from high school. She is in her late 20’s, constantly living in the past and struggling with herself. She thinks she’s not doing a great job in life. Gary – Claire’s most recent ex-boyfriend. He’s in his 30’s and is searching for clarity after big changes in his job and his relationship with Claire. John Ferry directs Clark Gable Slept Here opening on February 2 THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Main Street Playhouse (MSP) is presenting Clark Gable Slept Here written by Michael McKeever and directed by John Ferry opening on February 2 at the Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street in Miami Lakes. This will be seasoned actor and director Ferry’s first time directing a play at MSP. A New York native, Ferry has performed and toured in 48 states. “It’s a very funny play. The playwright really did capture an element of Hollywood,” Ferry said. The dichotomy between the play’s premise and the way the plot is carried out is ironic. Although it’s a play in and of itself, it critiques and observes the secrets hidden behind the curtain in Hollywood. “The theatre is based on realism, and it’s gritty. You know, film is film,” Ferry explained. “All you need to be good is the right script and 500 takes and the directors in Hollywood can piece together perfect performances. But in the theatre, you walk on stage and it’s all live,

New Testament Baptist Church (NTBC) has announced its annual carnival will be open from February 22 to 25. The hours are Thursday from 5-10 p.m., Friday from 5-11 p.m., Saturday from noon to 12 a.m. and Sunday from 1 to 10 p.m. The carnival will be held on the Dade Christian Campus at 6601 N.W. 167 Street. Admission is free, but wristbands to ride are an additional cost. “It’s quality family time, and it’s also benefitting the school,” said teacher Steven Willoughby. The carnival is a fundraising opportunity for the church as well as their school. Around 15 to 20 vendors participate, not including the food trucks or vendors from the school or NTBC itself. In fact, one of the most popular specials sold in the Fair is Pan con Lechon that is actually made by the deacons of NTBC. “We have the carnival every year to reach out to the community in ways that are unique. In that sense we look at the carni-

val not only as a fundraiser, but as a friend raiser also.” said Pastor Reyner Cruz Over the four days, thousands of guests flock to the NTBC carnival. Faculty, church members and students participate and volunteer all weekend long to help with crowds. Since its creation in 2013, the carnival has been an effective way of raising money for the church and its ministries. It takes up to a year to plan, with more details being planned four months before they open. Each class is encouraged to sell as many tickets as they can to win a dress down day with a pizza party, a no homework pass and a $100 off voucher for 2018-19 tuition. Teachers get in on the fun too, and if they have the winning class they get to pie a fellow staff member in the face and also earn one paid day off. Council discusses updating Town’s mobility fee program

Citing flaws in Miami Lakes’ mobility fee for development projects which pays for offsite traffic improvements to accommodate additional trips, the Miami Lakes Town Council is planning to tweak the program to assure the method is fair to all property owners. The one-time charge on new developments apparently doesn’t sit well with some developers, including the property owners for Miami Lakes Auto Mall, who claimed they must pay a higher fee than others based on the formula the Town uses to determine the rate for trips per day on a street. During the January Town Council meeting, Councilmember Luis Collazo spearheaded the mobility fee change after he learned the rate for the Auto Mall is higher to build a new parking garage, and proposed some options such as taking a hybrid model approach and dividing the town into districts. Although council members agreed the mobility fee structure needs to be reevaluated, they rejected Collazo’s two proposals and any suggestions of bringing back traffic currency for development projects, which they said has been a big failure for years. While they scrutinize the mobility fee later this year, lawmakers said they will make the necessary changes without BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER CEA students pose with their teachers John Brady defeating the sole purpose of the (left) and Jackeline Hernandez (right) after winning first place in the Miami-Dade County “We program. the People” district competition.

Bob Graham Education Center’s (BGEC) Civic Engagement Academy (CEA) won 1st place in Miami-Dade County Public School’s “We the People” District Competition on January 11. Students will continue to the State’s “We the People” Competition in Orlando on February 2nd. This marks the 4th consecutive year that the team has earned 1st place and moves on to States. CEA teachers Jackeline Hernandez and John Brady and their students work relentlessly to learn about the intricacies of

the U.S. Constitution, practice perfecting their arguments and keep up-to-date on current issues. “We the People” is an instructional program that enhances students’ understanding of the institutions of American constitutional democracy. Students discover the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The culminating activity is a simulated congressional hearing in which students “testify” before a panel of judges. They demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitu-

tional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues. The program promotes civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s upper elementary and secondary students and enjoys active support from the Center for Civic Education, State Bar Associations and foundations, and other educational, professional, business and community organizations across the nation.

PAGE 13

Collazo said the town’s road impact fees to pay for transportation upgrades have accelerated some of the much needed traffic improvements conceivably faster than the mobility fee since few developments were built under the program. The Lennar Corporation, which is building single-family and town homes west of N.W. 87 Avenue and Miami Lakes Drive, and The Graham Companies’ commercial project on Main Street, so far have paid the mobility fee for their developments. Town Manager Alex Rey said, so far, the mobility fee has generated about $700,000 and more developments in the town’s pipeline are planning to go up this year and in 2019. He said some developers pay a higher fee than other property owners based on the number of trips their projects are projected to generate on a daily basis. “Some areas are more because they have the most traffic,” Rey said. The fee can only be used for traffic improvements in the area for a new building. “If area A generates the fee, the money must be spent in area A,” Rey said. Mayor Manny Cid said the town will review the program but he will not support bringing back traffic concurrency for developments in lieu of the mobility fee.

Pace High’s James Williams receives scholarship offers from multiple universities By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker At only 14 years old, Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s James Williams has shown many local spectators and recruiters from around the nation that he is a force to be reckoned with. At the beginning of the season, head football coach Joe Zaccheo recognized the talents he brings to the Spartan team by stating that Williams “might just be the next Sean Taylor.” Since then, he has continued to work hard to prove himself both on and off the field. Standing tall at 6’4 and 200 pounds, the Spartan safety and linebacker has already received numerous football scholarship offers from several universities.

The first offer came from Florida Atlantic University followed by Syracuse University. The third offer arrived when University of Miami’s (UM) defensive coach Manny Diaz visited Zaccheo two weeks ago and offered Williams an offer on the spot. The conversations with recruiters continued as he received two more offers from Pittsburgh University and the University of Tennessee last week. With 3 years of high school football ahead of him as a Spartan, Williams will have plenty of time to consider the opportunities ahead of him before becoming eligible to commit to a university as a senior.

Jeff Pond returns to Mater Academy as head football coach

Mater Academy’s search for a new head football coach brought back a familiar face. Jeff Pond, the Lions’ defensive coordinator during the 2015 and 2016 seasons under Rocco Casullo, was named the new coach for the 2018 season, his first head coaching job after serving as an assistant for more than 15 years. Pond built one of the topranked defenses in the state, which helped Mater Academy reach the regional playoffs during those two seasons and won the school’s first district title. As Casullo’s successor, Pond, 38, is building a power house team on both sides of the football following a 7-6 season, and a loss to Palm Beach Garden’s Dwyer in the regional quarterfinal. He said he’s bringing back some of the coaches from the 2015 and 2016 teams to pick up where Casullo left off. “We will continue what coach Casullo did some years ago,” said Pond. “That is what made us successful.” The Lions’ 2016 defense was among the best in Florida, giving up only six points per game and recording six shut outs, as Mater Academy finished the season 11-2.

Jose Marti MAST Academy announces top two teachers Christy Llanes has been named as José Marti MAST Academy’s (JMMA) 2018 Teacher of the Year. She has worked as the Science, Engineering, Communication and Mathematics Enhancement (SECME) coordinator since she began working as a teacher at JMMA 7 years ago. During this time, there has been a tremendous change of staff, many positive programs implemented and an upward trend in the achievements of students at the school, all of which are a direct result of her involvement and innovative ideas. Llanes has an open-door policy for her students that makes her readily available to them for questions and assistance. She motivates her students to not only be successful in her honors and Advanced Placement (AP) level science courses, but she infuses them with a passion for learning. She works closely with her department and teachers to find the most effective teaching strategies. As a result, the achievement of students has demonstrated a positive increase over the past few years, particularly in the AP Sciences which she teaches. Llanes’s colleague, Katherine Valenzuela, won Rookie Teacher of the Year. As a third year Chemistry and Forensics teacher, Valenzuela has already made her mark. Her schedule demonstrates the confidence JMMA has in her teaching ability, She has made a great impression on the administration and science department chair. Valenzuela has single-handedly created a forensics program that has not only excited her students, but has also intrigued her colleagues in multiple disciplines. She co-facilitated a professional development course where teachers

Spanish Lake Elementary honors DARE Officer Wendy Heller This year's Drug Abuse Resistance Program (DARE) graduation at Spanish Lakes Elementary (SLE) was bittersweet due to the beloved Miami-Dade Police Officer Wendy Heller's forthcoming retirement. Since the school’s inception, Heller has served as SLE’s resource officer and DARE instructor. After the students were presented the certificate of completion for the 10 week course, a special award was given to 5th grader, Max Valcin, in Julie Tejaro’s room for being genuinely kind and an exemplary student in the program. Then, a surprise program in Heller’s honor was given. A spectacular dance routine was performed by 5th grade girls. Poems “Believe In Yourself and “The Gift of Time, were recited by the class. Principal Jacqueline Arias-Gonzalez presented Heller with a plaque of appreciation and flowers. Fifth grade students and teachers presented her with a special gift. This was followed by the DARE song and pledge. “This is my largest graduating group, and one I’ll never forget, said Heller. Jessica Romero is Goleman’s Teacher of the Year THE MIAMI LAKER

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Jessica Romero,10th grade Advanced Placement (AP) Art History teacher, was named Teacher of the Year at Barbara Goleman Senior High School (BGHS). Romero is the Fine Arts Department head as well as the school’s Activities Director. In addition to teaching sophomores, Romero teaches other levels as well. She also sponsors the Student Government Association (SGA) a feat, she says, holds a special place in her heart. “I have the opportunity to meet some of our school’s best and brightest students,” Romero says. Romero is a Florida International University alumni and

she is currently enrolled in Nova Southeastern University to earn her masters degree. Her passion for teaching began at a young age when she became fascinated with history. Teaching is in her genes, with Romero’s mother being an art teacher for 25 years. “I always knew I wanted to have a profession that honored this love (for history), but I didn’t always know what this was,” Romero said. Romero has been teaching at BGHS since the beginning of her career 18 years ago. In addition to being honored as Teacher of the Year, Romero has also been selected as one of the five North Region Teacher of the JESSICA ROMERO (third from right) poses with Barbara Goleman Senior Student Year finalists. Armando Mendive is named Teacher of the Year at Pace High By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Armando Mendive has been a part of the Monsignor Edward Pace High School faculty since September 3, 1997. He had hopes of becoming an engineer, but history, particularly American History, always held a special place in his heart and guided him to become the person and social studies teacher he is today. Following an all-school mass this past fall, the entire student body at Pace burst into enthusiastic cheers when principal Ana Garcia announced that Mendive had been recognized as Teacher of the Year following nearly 21 years teaching at the high school. Growing up, Mendive recalls being “one of the quiet kids in class.” He always felt that he saw the world differently than most kids. “I was a voracious reader, especially history and fantasy books,” Mendive said. After 25 years as an educator, Mendive believed that the hours of discussions as a young man with his parents and brothers over various topics led him to discover his love of history, and that it could be understood from many different perspectives. As a junior attending Saint Brendan High school, Mendive met his wife Onelia at an SAT prep course at Coral Park High School. “She is the one who pushed me to become a teacher,” Mendive recognized. “She always felt I would be good at it.” As he continued along his own academic path, Mendive’s enthusiasm for teaching history

FEBRUARY 2, 2018

ARMANDO MENDIVE was shaped by a professor who he came across while he was a student at Miami-Dade College. “He made me realize that history is not just about facts,” said Mendive. “It’s about ideas, philosophies, ground breaking moments and most importantly, about amazing people. When I teach history, I try to make the stories come to life for the students in the same way that they came to life for me.”

Mendive began his teaching career as a computer teacher for K-6 at Gateway Christian. He worked as a substitute for Miami-Dade County Public Schools and later went on to teach 6th grade students at St. Monica’s Catholic School prior to coming to Pace. As a new teacher at Pace back in 1997, Mendive says he was “blessed with an enormous amount of help and advice from a number of teachers,” and jokingly admitted “I stole all of their tricks.” In addition to teaching Social Studies, Mendive is also the moderator of the Japanese Animation and Culture Club at Pace. Anime is something he also fell in love with while watching late night TV as a teenager and he is excited to share this with the students as well. Mendive is thankful for this recognition and looks forward to being a part of the Spartan family for many years to come, as his twins Onelia and Armando are now freshman at Pace.

After completing a pre-visit and post-visit questionnaire, students wrote a short essay about an elderly person in their own family and how they were special to them. They reflected on the meaning of the Social Teaching regarding the elderly

and on the impact that their visit to St. Catherine’s Nursing Home would have on the residents and themselves. Students completed the project by making Christmas cards and writing a personal prayer on each card. They also sang Christmas carols and played on their recorders for the residents, many of whom reminded them of their own grandparents.

Our Lady of the Lakes students winners of ISSF 8th Grade STAR Award

Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School students Ben Segall, Karla Alvarez and Rafael de la Cova were winners of the Independent Schools of South Florida (ISSF) Eighth Grade STAR Award. The ISSF STAR students exemplified a positive attitude, commitment to positive goals, constant improvement in performance, citizenship, perseverance, dedication and academics. The students will be recognized at the ISSF Star Awards Luncheon, which takes place on Wednesday, April 18, at the Miami Airport Convention Center by the DoubleTree at Hilton Hotel. More than 900 guests are expected to be on hand when the

students receive their medals for their academic and community accomplishments. Founded in 1984, the ISSF, formerly known as the Dade Association of Academic Nonpublic Schools or DAANS, has grown from a loosely organized group of schools to an effective association of over 70 accredited schools and two parochial school organizations. The organization has expanded its purpose to providing educational opportunities for certification of its faculty, providing Awards Luncheons, Spelling and Geography Bee competitions and monitoring legislation affecting non-public education through its membership in FAANS.

Mater Lakes Academy’s SGA students join Florida Association of Student Councils for first time The Florida Association of Student Councils (FASC) District 6 held its annual Rally Convention on January 20 at Mater Academy. The FASC consists of over 200 middle and high schools from throughout Florida who work together to bring about a growth in student leadership development, participating in student activities and student engagement in civic affairs. The District 6 convention included workshops, guest speakers, campaigning for dis-

trict officer positions, and voting for the 2018-2019 school year. Mater Lakes Academy’s Adriana Sela, a junior, was elected as the District 6 secretary for the upcoming school year. In order to be eligible to run as an officer, students had to not only give speeches to the more than 300 FASC members in attendance, but they had to also perform a skit as a team. “This school year is the first year that Mater Lakes Academy’s Student Government Association has been a member of the FASC, and we cannot be more proud and honored to have this position,” said activities director Melissa Stonestreet. Sela, and the rest of the Mater Lakes SGA begin their duties MATER LAKESʼ Adriana after the State Convention in Sala elected Secretary for Orlando later in this school year. FASC District 6.

American Senior High School names two outstanding teachers By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff American Senior High School (ASHS) announced two top teachers for the 2017-18 school year. Guillermo Casarreal was named Teacher of the Year while his colleague, Vanessa Bertin, was announced as Rookie Teacher of the Year. “It (Teacher of the Year) represents a stimulus for continuing learning and improving my knowledge in order to give more to my students,” Casarreal said. Casarreal has been teaching since 1971, but had his beginnings at University of Pinar del Rio in Cuba. Additionally, he was a professor at Autonomous University of Managua in Nicaragua, University of Luanda in Angola and the University of Costa Rica. He began working at ASHS in 2005 teaching earth science, physics and mathematics. He now teaches advanced topics in math to juniors and seniors. Although Casarreal wanted to be an engineer growing up, he found a passion in something he never expected. “When I began to teach I understood the importance of it, and I began to love this career,” Casarreal explained. Rookie Teacher of the Year, Bertin, teaches world history and U.S. history to 9th and 11th grade. She graduated from

GUILLERMO CASARREAL Barbara Goleman Senior High School in 2002. She attended Miami-Dade College for her first two years, receiving her associates of arts in 2012 and finally transferring to Florida International University and graduating with a bachelors degree in sociology and anthropology in 2016. Before teaching at ASHS, she taught dance for 7 years. “Winning this award is an honor,” Bertin said. “I appreciate all of my colleagues who acknowledge not just my hard work, but all of the new teachers who work hard.” With Bertin, the key to her teaching is open communica-

VANESSA BERLIN tion with her students. She creates a college atmosphere where her students can always reach her through her designated “office hours” which last from before class even begins to the end of the school day, and sometimes even longer. “I try to get them into the habit of being able to communicate so they can convey anything they need. Including to a boss or college professor in the future,” Bertin said. For more information about American Senior High School or the exceptional teachers mentioned above, visit www. americanshs.org.

By Kayleen Padron The Miami Laker staff Hialeah Gardens Middle School (HGMS) named music teacher, Berman Lopez, as Teacher of the Year. With great attention to his student’s individual needs, Lopez also focuses on efficiently teaching his students about the intricacies of the music world. “This includes an effective and efficient warm up routine, where students listen to each other and focus on rhythmic and articulation exercises, as well as learning scales and proper breathing techniques,” Lopez explained. “We continue the rehearsal, learning standard band literature, while reinforcing fundamentals. Such as phrasing, tuning, and tone production.” Once students master their musical skills, Lopez tries to connect their experience in the classroom with the outside world, giving them opportunities to showcase their talents in school-wide recitals and even performing at Walt Disney World in Orlando. “Not only do students make real world connections, but they understand that talents are not a selfish possession,” Lopez said. Since 2011, HGMS Symph-

BERMAN LOPEZ onic Band students have been winning Superior ratings consistently, in addition to Lopez’s Jazz Band, which has held the same rating for the past three years. In the Music USA Festival in Orlando, Lopez’s students have been named Grand Champions five times out of the six years they’ve been competing. “Their success is my success!” Lopez exclaimed. “Earning their trust and respect is a priority for me, and I feel privileged to work in a profession that allows me to incorporate my love of music into my passion for teaching.”

Anita D. Britt is named new chief financial and administration officer for St. Thomas Univ.

Northwest Miami-Dade resident Anita D. Britt was named chief financial and administrative officer for St. Thomas University. The announcement was made by STU president Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale. Britt’s new job became effective on January 1. Her appointment reflects the University’s transformative mission in becoming the leading Catholic University in the Southeast. Britt has served on the St. Thomas Board of Trustees and as the co-chair for the Gus Machado School of Business advisory board over the last five years. She brings more than 30 years of global business experience from companies including Perry Ellis International and Jones Group. She began her career as a CPA at Coopers and Lybrand. ”Ms. Britt has been a terrific contributor to St. Thomas University as a trustee, and she brings a strong understanding of the University’s forward path as it builds on its core competencies in law, business, sports management, and nursing among other programs,” said Casale. “She brings a strong skill set, which will complement and enhance the University’s future while also understanding its Catholic intellectual tradition.” Britt succeeds Terrence “Terry” O’Connor, who has served as St. Thomas’ CFO for the past 11 years. O’Connor will assist the University in an advisory capacity until his retirement on March 31. “We are especially grateful to Terry for his contributions and service to St. Thomas over the years,” said Casale. “He has been my right hand for over a decade, and his contributions have led St. Thomas to solid positioning.”
