Groundbreaking for American’s $7.4M renovation Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, School Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman, board members and community leaders participated in a series of special events taking place across Miami-Dade County to kick-off school bond projects resulting from the overwhelming voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond. The latest of these within District 13 schools took place at American Senior High School on Friday, January 30. American principal, Francisco Garnica, welcomed the featured guests and various construction firms present at the school on the morning of the ground breaking. The bond is being used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the district, expand student capacity, enhance

facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools. New wireless infrastructure has been installed, paving the way for schools to move into the digital age. The project at American, valued at approximately $7.4 million, will include designs and renovations for updated safety and lighting features and a new HVAC system. Designs will be drawn up during 2015, renovations will begin in 2016 and the project should be completed by 2017. By taking full advantage of today’s technology and digital learning environments, and replacing or updating aging school buildings, the school district is making it possible for all students to have access to cutting-edge academic programming and modern safety and security measures.

Main Street Players presents 2015’s first play A Bicycle Country on Feb. 6 By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Main Street Players, located at 6766 Main Street in Miami Lakes, presents the first play of its 41st season, A Bicycle Country, by Pulitzer-Prize award winning playwright, Nilo Cruz. A Bicycle Country will run from February 6 through March 1 Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The play is set against the backdrop of early 90’s when the Russian government’s long-standing financial support for Cuba ended which brought severe hardship and austerity to the Cuban people. The play, directed by John Oliveras and produced by Clara Lyzniak, follows the daunting journeys of three rafters, or balseros, who embark on a raft to reach the Florida shores, despite the odds, in the quest for freedom. Cut between two acts, the first titled “Tierra,” and the second “Agua,” A Bicycle Country shows the desperation and oppression experienced by the Cuban people who are trapped in a jail surrounded by water. Julio, played by Michael Fernandez, Ines played by Michelle Antelo and Pepe played by Luis Acosta together make an unlikely crew who set their sights on the freedom America offers. Julio, trapped both by water and his recuperating body, offers a metaphor for the Cuban people, crippled and paralyzed, until Ines, a dreamer, and his friend Pepe

County’s No Kill Animal goal moves ahead Miami-Dade County Animal Services achieved a combined save rate for cats and dogs of 81.5 percent in 2014, bringing the shelter and the community closer than ever to realizing the 90 percent save rate that has become the benchmark of “no kill” success. Since adopting “no kill” policies in 2014 as the guiding principle for providing care and refuge for over 27,000 unwanted dogs and cats, Animal Service’s save rate has continued to grow at unprecedented rates. The save rate for dogs increased from 61 percent in 2010 to 82 percent in 2014, while the save rate for cats increased from 18 percent in 2010 to 81 percent in 2014. Becoming a “no kill” shelter

requires the live release of 90 percent of the animals through adoptions, returns to owners or transfers to other no-kill facilities. A $4 million increase in the Animals Services budget, approved by the Board of County Commissioners in 2013, has enabled the shelter to implement life-saving programs and services that include, but are not limited to, a strong focus on adoptions, an increase in off-site adoption events, Trap-Neuter-Return services for community cats, low cost spay/neuter services, volunteer and foster care training and recruitment, pet retention counseling, improved intake vaccination protocols, on-staff supervisory and treatment veterinarians.

tainment and give our residents a good reason to stay in Town and spend discretionary dollars.” Partners Yirka and Alex Marban, Ignacio Menendez and Yaime Riveiro purchased the franchise and are offering weekday evenings and weekend classes. Summary of Town Council January meeting actions The Miami Laker staff A summary of actions taken by the Miami Lakes Town Council during its January 13 regular meeting: The Council voted to oppose an I-75 overpass leading onto N.W. 154 Street. The town’s proposed resolution is in response to the city of Hialeah’s development plans for land west of I-75, which requires Miami-Dade County to open up N.W. 170 Street. The town doesn’t have authority over N.W. 170 Street but Miami-Dade is mandated to openup the roadway once Hialeah starts developing plans for residential, commercial and recreation use on the land which the city annexed in 2003. “I would like to keep both roads locked but I was told about the development west of I-75 and 170 Street would be opening,” said Councilmember Ceasar Mestre who sponsored the resolution. “Let’s hope opening up 170 Street would be less disruptive as possible for Miami Lakes.” Mayor Wayne Slaton said he recalls years ago the county had planned to expand N.W. 170 Street from two lanes to four but rescinded the idea following protests from Miami Lakes and Palm Springs North residents. “The county took it out of its MPO project,” Slaton said. “We

can reinforce the idea that an overpass shouldn’t open in the western parts of the county.” The resolution was scheduled to go before councilmembers at their February 3 meeting. In other Town Council News: • Councilmembers authorized Town Manager Alex Rey to award contracts to the YMCA of Greater Miami and Pear Programs for summer camp and after school programs. The YMCA programs will be held at Royal Oaks Park and Pear Programs at Park East Youth Center. The YMCA is offering the Town $160/month ($40/week) for After School Programming and $120/week per child for the basic Summer Camp Programming, with no registration fee. The Town will see a sharp increase in fee sharing with the YMCA from previous years. The Town currently collects $1 per participant per month from the YMCA; the new agreement will send 20 percent of the monthly gross receipts back to the Town. PEAR was selected as the proposer to service the Park East Youth Center which is currently under construction. While PEAR’s rates are higher than those of the YMCA, the programming is quite different than those offered by the YMCA. Activities focus on core

values, offering good character development and supporting physical, social, emotional, and mental development. The After School Care, Spring Break, Winter Camp and Summer Camp proposals meet the needs of the Town by offering wellness based programs and placing an emphasis on the “whole person” to stimulate development in all areas. PEAR will provide After School Care at $10/day and Summer Camp at $115-$150/week based on the number of weeks a participant registers for each program. The Town will receive a 30 percent fee share from PEAR. • Councilmembers authorized the Town Manager to waive the competitive bidding process in accordance with Section 5.d. of the Town’s Procurement Ordinance 12-142 and award a contract to Metro Express, Inc. and DCorp Construction, Inc. The scope of work includes asphalt, drainage, and concrete repairs, replacements and new installations for small tasks/projects. This includes, but is not limited to repair/replacement of potholes, sinkholes, or curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The work would also include the installation of new drainage or sidewalks, curbs and gutters on a small scale. The work will be performed on an as needed basis through the issuance of work

orders that will typically not exceed $25,000. • Councilmembers approved a Town of Miami Lakes Education Compact initiated by Mayor Wayne Slaton in coordination with Miami-Dade County School Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman and Miami-Dade Public Schools district staff. The compact will strive to meet the educational needs of the town’s youth and enhance learning opportunities through student achievement, community involvement, facilities and communications. • Councilmembers amended the budget for 2013-14 to carryover money that was allocated to fund projects in 2014 but were not completed. A portion of the carryover was allocated for park capital improvements along with funds

for the Town’s marketing initiative; and to fund a performance bonus for Town employees and independent contractors. The proposed budget amendments total $467,400 which would leave a General Fund balance of $3.916 million. • Councilmembers adopted the Town’s Dog Recreation Area Concept plan and authorized the Town Manager to secure design services for construction documents not to exceed $25,000. The concept was presented at two public meetings in December and received general support while discussions focused on future management and operation issues. The current Capital Budget allocates $150,000 for the design and construction of the dog recreational area.

Cupcake Wars contestant Letty Alvarez opens L.A. Sweets By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff A corner shop, 6702, with a view of the grand oak tree in Main Street is now home to L.A. Sweets, a shop with a story as sweet as its cupcakes. Letty Alvarez was living in

Virginia with her husband Eddie Dominguez and their five children when news came of her father’s cancer in the form of an inoperable brain tumor. Alvarez and her family made the move back to their roots in South Florida to look after her father until his passing.

Alvarez, left grief-stricken and jobless following the move, had decisions to make. She chose to take a risk. “I dropped everything to look after my father, including my job, and after his passing my husband was feeling the weight of being a single income family. I knew I had to go back to work, only I thought to start over,” said Alvarez. “I pitched the idea to my husband that we should start a business and when we both tried to come up with ideas for what we could do, I thought of gourmet cupcakes.” Having no personal training or culinary experience, Alvarez ventured to try her hand at a cupcake business. Her only background in baking came from making her children’s birthday cakes, something that began when her family’s modest income didn’t allow for her to purchase a fondant decorated cake for her daughter’s first birthday. After taking a hobby class in creating fondant, Alvarez found her passion, one that would years later blossom into a successful business, though she had no way to be sure of success at its inception. “I knew it was a huge risk,” said Alvarez. “When you risk it all it’s like burning your safety net and there is nothing there to catch you if you fail. But there is a saying ‘high risk, high reward’ and so many of us aren’t willing to risk it.

LETTY ALVAREZ, center, and her husband Eddie Dominguez (bottom left) are surrounded by their children at one of their L.A. Sweets locations, the newest of which recently opened in the heart of Miami Lakes on Main Street. I told my husband that instead of going to work day after day for someone else’s dreams and maybe die before ever seeing ours that I would rather bet it all on us. So we did.” Upon starting, the name L.A. Sweets was chosen by Dominguez for it’s trendy West Coast sound though born in the East, much like its owner whose initials also make an appearance with “L.A.” for Letty Alvarez. The catchy name and cupcakes were just about the only things that were sweet during its rough beginnings, with Alvarez taking the day shifts to work the business, while her husband continued working a full time job during the day and switched off with her in the evenings, taking over L.A. Sweets’ night shifts as

Alvarez cared for their children. “In the beginning it was just us because we couldn’t afford employees. It was a big sacrifice but we look back on those times now immensely proud for having the guts to try. We built it up over time,” said Alvarez. Eventually Alvarez and Dominguez enlisted the help of their children, Christian, 23, who is a Le Cordon Bleu trained baker, Danielle, Gabrielle, and a pair of nine-year old twins, Joseph and Maria who help with the decorating. “My oldest son is my head baker and my twins help me with decorations. They do the butterflies and flowers. Although I’d say it’s really Maria who makes them

Alvarez’s cupcake secret: Real ingredients, unique flavors (Continued from Page 10) and Joseph who eats most of them so he’s not as helpful but they’re a package deal,” said a chuckling Alvarez. Two years into L.A. Sweets’ Sunset Place shop in Coral Gables, Alvarez and Dominguez receive a call from casting directors who read their Yelp reviews and were offering the opportunity to be a part of the Food Network’s hit competition series “Cupcake Wars.” The long-running show featured Alvarez and Dominguez battling against 3 other pairs of contestants for the chance to win $10,000 in the “Rock of Ages” episode in Season 5 which aired in April 2012. For Alvarez one of the highlights of the show was judge and French pastry chef, Florian Bellanger’s comments on her guava cupcakes, calling them “the best guava cupcakes” he’s ever had. L.A. Sweets is the original home of the guava cupcake in South Florida, and one of Alvarez’s best selling cupcakes. The L.A. Sweets owners placed second in the segment, a devastating blow, though in hindsight an incredible opportunity that may not be over just yet. They are currently in talks of returning to the show for another segment to claim the prize they narrowly missed. “We went in so determined to win,” said Alvarez. “It took us like three weeks to get our mojo back after that. At the end of the day it was still an achievement to even be selected for the show out of so many bakers and it’s encouraging to know I had that strength in me. We picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off and moved forward.” Forward they did, and right into the periphery of famed baker, owner of Carlo’s Bakery and star of TLC’s hit show Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro. Thirteen bakers from across the country and nearly 75,000 applicants are hand selected to participate in Valstro’s second show, The Next Great Baker. After Valastro saw Alvarez in Cupcake Wars, she was chosen as one of his thirteen. Alvarez flew to New Jersey for her chance to win $100,000 in the show’s third season though she was eliminated in the season’s seventh round after winning two challenges. “All I ask is don’t judge me too harshly from that first episode,” said Alvarez with a laugh. “They did quite a number portraying me and though I did snap, for a variety of reasons that viewers of the show don’t know, my true nature is shown in later episodes. Also, great friendships were formed under unconventional circumstances. People that were supposed to be enemies walked away as lifelong friends and our paths crossed for a reason.” As for Buddy himself, Alvarez says he’s the real deal. “Buddy is such an intense person but super passionate and motivated,” said Alvarez. “He has a

strong demeanor but it’s only because he had to fight to get where he is, and I can relate to that fight. It was so great to see that he wasn’t just a facade, that he really is a great person with killer instincts and extreme passion for his family and livelihood.” L.A. Sweets has had a few runins with other big names such as Ricky Martin, for whom a coconut spiced rum cupcake is named after, a creation from Cupcake Wars. Martin has tried the cupcake and loved it. The shop was also recently contacted to create a cola inspired cupcake as part of Coca Cola’s celebration of Miami Beach’s 100th birthday. Alvarez is currently concocting a Cherry Coke flavored cupcake. Flavors are constantly created and added to the growing list of cupcakes at L.A. Sweets, so many that Alvarez has given up on trying to list them all, over 150, on the shop’s website. About 20-30 fla-

vors are rotated every day. She is also working on sugar-free and gluten-free cupcakes. “I’m experimenting,” said Alvarez. “I’ll give you sugar-free but it better taste good!” Her secret? Real ingredients and unique flavors. Alvarez uses only real eggs and real butter in her baking and refuses to sell customers what she would not eat herself, even at the cost of profit margins. Currently L.A. Sweets has a variety of cupcakes ranging from mango to alcohol-infused cupcakes for events. The shop caters for weddings, corporate gatherings, parties, bridal showers and more. From humble beginnings to over six years of experience in the sweetest industry, Alvarez and her family have given rise to a successful gourmet cupcakery in three locations with plans to franchise in Orlando. Of all the ups and downs along the way, Alvarez says her

biggest hurdle was herself. “I had to get over my own selfdoubt for any of it to work. Thoughts about not being college educated held me back until I realized that many greats in history weren’t held back by their lack of formal training. So my thoughts of ‘who am I to succeed’ turned into

‘who am I not to succeed?’ I am my own worst critic, but I am also my own best advocate.” For more information call 305558-1800 or visit www.lasweets. net and follow the shop on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The Miami Lakes L.A. Sweets is located at 6702 Main Street.

The Station Scene by Griselle Marino, Public Affairs Manager Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department

One man’s treasure may be another’s firetrap. Hoarding is a growing problem that affects every community and the fire departments serving them. Excessive clutter of any kind poses direct threats to the health and safety of not only the residents but of the firefighters as well. Nevertheless, firefighters continue to respond each day to fires regardless of the amount of personal belongings an occupant may have. The tactics may change, but the need to put water on the fire does not. Hoarding not only can create egress and ingress issues for evacuating occupants but also can delay fire crews entering the structure. Often, exits are blocked and rooms are filled to the ceiling with stacks of belongings that can easily fall over and entrap firefighters. Although firefighters may force open an inward-opening exterior door to enter, getting out through the same door may present a problem. Also, if a firefighter is in distress, accessing and removing him/her can be difficult. First responders have a double-edged sword to deal with – fire prevention and firefighter safety. Today, firefighter safety is a battle that all departments across the country continue to wage. Fires that begin in a hoarder’s home may require several new tactical decisions. Is it safe to send my crew in this residence? Is the fuel load so large that an interior attack may be futile? Can I even make access into this structure effectively? Are escape routes obstructed?

Fires in hoarding households are indeed fiercer and more expensive to fight than other kinds of residential fires; it will generally necessitate numerous personnel. The attack may be extensive and require a large water supply and possible multiple hoselines. Any rescue efforts will be extremely taxing; overhaul and salvage will be incredibly difficult. You can help firefighters by taking action to control clutter. Here are some friendly tips: • Identify tiny projects that will give you a lot of satisfaction. Pick a corner of a room, one shelf or one stack of papers to start. Work in small steps, doing what you can in about half an hour. Don’t try to tackle too much in one sitting. • Compartmentalize as you go through your stuff. Take four boxes and label them “Trash,” “Storage,” “Donate,” and “For Sale.” Use these for sorting as you declutter and then expedite taking

them to their final destinations. • Set up a 2015 memo box or file for each family member. Use these boxes as a place to put things you want to save, such as concert tickets, birthday cards, or cute notes from your kids. This kind of stuff tends to stack up on a kitchen counter or bedside table. Now it can be part of a time capsule for the year. Remember to draw a basic floor plan of your home, and mark your family’s fire escape route. The route should have two ways to exit the home, as well as a safe, common place to meet outside the home. Talk with your children about the dangers of smoke, the importance of not hiding during a fire, and remaining outside your home. Keep in mind that infants and disabled or elderly family members may require assistance existing the home. Practice your plan with a drill. There should be no clutter on the route to exit!

es. After a practice round on Friday, January 16, the game began on Saturday, January 17. The morning matches were played with teams of two from each squad facing off in a Four-Ball Match which means the lowest score of each of the 2 players on a team counts versus their opponents score of the same. After the morning rounds in which 7 matches were played, with 1 point awarded for each win and 1/2 point if both teams tied, the Nealis-led Governor’s Team had a commanding 6-1 lead. The afternoon matches on Saturday, also featured teams of two in an alternate shot format. The Senator Team under Carmanate won 3 of the 5 matches, and tied another for a final score of 3 1/2 to 1 1/2. At the end of Day 1, Governor’s Team had a 7 1/2 to 4 1/2 lead,

setting up a dramatic Sunday finish. The first team to earn 13 1/2 points would win, and on Sunday there were 14 individual matches planned. Captains teed off first at 7 a.m. followed by the other 13 matches. Nealis disposed of Carmanate 5 holes ahead with 4 to play and the Governor’s Team never looked back. The event ended on the 18th hole with both teams congratulating each other after a great weekend of golf, looking forward to the awards session and the surf and turf dinner to follow. Next year’s Captains Adolph Zunino of The Governor’s Team, and Scott Lowery of the Senator’s Team, were selected to take the lead for 2016. The Senator Cup will take place next year on the Senator Course once again.

Club Business magazine reviews Shula’s Athletic Club Reprinted with permission by Club Business International Magazine Shula’s Athletic Club recently celebrated the opening of an expanded personal training area by introducing the Thrive Functional Training System, a unique regimen named the “Best New Workout Program” for 2014 by Men’s Health Magazine. Created by Mike Boyle, a world-renowned strength coach, the program employs the same principles he has used to train world-class athletes, including the 2013 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox and the 2014 Silver-Medal U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey Team. The program, however, can be customized to anyone’s age, goal or fitness level.

Among Shula’s wide-ranging offerings are an innovative youth sports program including junior and adult tennis, nutrition counseling workshops, and a large variety of fitness classes such as yoga, Pilates, Silver Sneakers, group exercise, and aqua aerobics. “Our priority has always been to maintain the best fitness training facility in the area, offering the most cutting-edge training methods,” said Shula’s Athletic Club general manager, Bill Higgs. “I’m excited to see what new fitness heights our members will reach as we deliver the nation’s leading performance program in our newly expanded training area.” For more information on Shula’s Athletic Club visit www.clubshula.com.

Joe Zaccheo returns as head football coach at Pace High By The Miami Laker staff When Mario Smith stepped down as Pace High’s football head coach three weeks ago, the school’s athletic director, Joe Zaccheo, and the school’s administration knew who they had in mind to replace him – the former coach himself. Zaccheo coached the Spartans for 11 seasons and led them to the state championship in 2003. He stepped down in 2006 to become the athletic director. Nine years later, he’s back pacing the sidelines with the same passion and excitement he had when he coached the Spartans from 1996 to 2006. “When I said yes, I had mixed emotions,” Zaccheo said when the administration asked him to come out of retirement and lead the program back to prominence. “When I got back into it, it was more than the old excitement starting all over again. It’s exciting and I’m pumped!” Zaccheo, who coached for 40 years, is tackling an arduous task of turning around a football program that has been struggling

since he retired. The Spartans finished last season at 2-8 and haven’t played postseason football since 2010. Smith, who resigned to start his own all-boys academy school, registered a 13-17 record in his three seasons as the Spartans’ coach. Zaccheo said he started assembling a plan to get the team back on the winning track the day he came out of retirement. He said his plan includes weight training, strength and condition, speed and agility workouts. Spring practice starts in May. “I am ready and I know the players are ready,” he said. “We are going to learn how to win again.” Zaccheo said he had no intention of coaching again, but he couldn’t reject the administration entreaties to return to his true calling. “When your family asks you something, you don’t turn your back on them,” Zaccheo said. “And that’s what we are at Pace, a family.”

American High’s Law Academy participates in Project Citizen By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff A group of sophomore students gather around an unfurled white mat, dusting for shoe prints as part of an assignment for their forensics law class at American Senior High School. Forensic Law, along with Street Law, Constitutional Law, and Mock Trial are the specialized classes offered by American’s Law Academy. This year marks the academy’s first time participating in Project Citizen, a program co-sponsored by the Center for Civic Education which is designed to promote responsible participation in local and state government. Students, under the direction of lead Law Academy teacher, Richard Browning, began brainstorming for competition ideas in early October when they came across a potential local issue – sidewalks, or lack thereof. The students are trying to get

sidewalks added along N.W. 57 Avenue from 183 Street to 173 Drive. “We wanted to focus on something important, but also something that had a chance of completion within the community,” said Browning. “The students threw back and forth some ideas before settling on the sidewalks. They thought it was kind of crazy that with the hectic traffic people were walking to get to multiple businesses in the area. This is completely a student-driven project.” After researching, the students found evidence of pedestrianrelated accidents in the area which solidified the resolve to move forward with the project idea. So far the students have found overwhelming support from the community while researching with over 600 citizen surveys, and have begun working with a slew of local businesses that will be sending letters to appropriate forums

within the local and state government for change. “It’s important for students to participate in events like Mock Trial and Project Citizen. It shows young kids how to become much more informed citizens and how to navigate the government bureaucracy,” said Browning. “It takes people to make change and now these students are given a chance to learn first hand how to change the community.” The academy first began eight years ago as part of a Small Learning Communities grant installed to create opportunity for students to dabble in their interests and broaden their scopes of skill before seeking college degrees. Browning teaches freshmen, sophomores, and juniors within the Law Academy along with Anthony Perno who teaches seniors taking Mock Trial. “I think the Law Academy is great for the teachers, for the school and for the students especially because these are the classes the kids choose to be in, so this is something they want to learn. Whenever you have kids that are interested in the subject it makes the class far more fun.” The program also offers internship placement opportunities for those who wish to work with law firms, many of which have taken on students as full time employees following graduation. The Law Academy at American is not a Magnet program, so only those within the school’s boundaries that attend the school are able to participate. For additional information on the Law Academy or American Senior High School, contact the school at 305-5573770.

First graduates in Pace’s Academy of Health Sciences By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker In a classroom at Monsignor Pace High School, seven Pace seniors are curiously out of uniform, instead clad in black polos from Barry University. These seven students are a part of Pace’s EMT Academy class, but they are also officially registered as college EMT students with Barry University, complete with Barry student IDs and Barry instructors teaching the class. The EMT Academy class is the final part of Pace High’s four-year Academy of Health Sciences, one of the school’s many Signature Academies that offer students the opportunity to take classes geared towards their individual interests and goals. By going through the Academy of Health Sciences, students can have the opportunity to land a job as an EMT right out of high school

and get an early start to further education in medical school and other fields in health sciences. The EMT Academy class has been taught mainly by Jorge Nuñez, an EMS instructor from Barry University and Lieutenant with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, with visits from other Barry personnel. When Nuñez is on shift, the class is taught by Cliff Ricketts, a Barry University instructor and Pace Class of 1999 alumnus who also works as a Lieutenant with Miramar Fire-Rescue. Classes for Academy of Health Sciences began in the 2012-2013 school year, with new freshman beginning their time at Pace on this academic track. These seven students, however, were also interested in joining the academy and thus took multiple classes per year to meet the standards set by the Academy. They are called the

“Magnificent Seven” by the Academy’s lead teacher Kevin Lagrange, and are the first group of students to be graduating out of the EMT Academy class. Lagrange has been the students’ teacher in the Academy for all three years and now acts as a liaison for their EMT Academy class. According to Lagrange, the seven students became more aware of the reality of their status as college students and future emergency responders when they visited Barry University earlier in the year to get their IDs and met with Jason Smith, the EMS Program Director and a Fire Captain with Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue. “We are molding a different type of student,” said Lagrange. He added that even if students do not want to pursue a career as an EMT, there are no drawbacks to the Academy. Students in the Academy learn different aspects of the medical field and can earn a head start when entering medical school, as opposed to other medical school applicants who enter with no experience. All juniors in the program become certified in AED and Adult CPR through the American Heart Association, and seniors become certified in BLS (Basic Life Support) for Infants, Children, and Adults. At the end of the academy, students can sit for

Later this semester, the students will start doing hospital visits at

the Cleveland Clinic in Weston on the weekend and ride along with several agencies on emergency calls. “We’re giving them the real world very early,” said Lagrange. The class will end with a megacode exam conducted by Barry University EMS Medical Director Joe Nelson, D.O. Our Lady of the Lakes holds inaugural alumni reunion

American High names Tiffany Davis Teacher of Year; Dennis Campos named top Rookie

Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School in Miami Lakes first opened its doors back in 1986 when it began the construction and vision of a K-8 school. Fast forward 30 plus years and the school has welcomed thousands of graduates and countless families. “As a parent and supporter of the church and school for more than 30 years, I was honored to be tasked with the role of Director of Community Relations and Alumni. It was through Father Alvarez’s vision that we have been able to begin the OLL Alumni Program,” said Elsa Reus. “Our goal is to build a future at our school by reuniting past and current alumni with their Catholic

Tiffany Davis won Teacher of the Year 2015 for American High School and Dennis A. Campos won Rookie Teacher of the Year for the Patriots. The two teachers provided a biography of themselves on the education and teaching backgrounds and other achievements. After graduating from Miami Norland Senior High School, Davis attended the University of Florida. She graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. In November 2001, she started working at FPL. After two years, the only part of her job that she enjoyed was training the supervisors of various departments on the new systems and some data analysis. It was then that she realized that she was running away from her true calling – education. She began working at American High School in August 2003 and has enjoyed every moment. From 2003 to 2008, she taught Intensive Math, Algebra 1, Geometry Honors and Precalculus Honors. She also has been the sponsor and co-sponsor for Mu Alpha Theta since 2004 and National Honor Society since 2010. In the Summer of 2008, she was named the Test Chair where her primary duty is to organize and maintain the security of assessments for the school. DENNIS CAMPOS accomplish much since he first arrived at American. He succeeded in getting 12 instruments donated to the band program by the District Music Supervisor of Miami-Dade County. He was awarded $2000 in donations toward his band class for instrument equipment so that every student in the class is able to learn and play an instrument. On his first Marching Music Performance Assessment as the Band Director, the band received an overall rating of “Excellent.” Campos’ music philosophy is that he believes every student should receive a musical education, and that every student who wishes to perform deserves the opportunity. He strongly believes no student should be turned down for not being good enough. The main goal is to always aim for an open mind, maintain a positive attitude, and, of course, to inspire his students through his teaching. Campos’ future goals for the music program are to retain and grow the band, as well as to teach comprehensive music courses such as AP Music Theory, Guitar Class, Jazz Ensemble, and Music History.

Dade Christian School cheerleaders compete at 26th Florida Nationals Dade Christian School (DCS) Cheerleaders represented their school at the 26th National Florida Christian Cheerleading Championships in Orlando. The competition hosts cheerleaders from all over the United States. After starting the year off with some challenges including injuries and last minute adjustments, the girls pulled together and gave their best performance of the season. DCS took home several awards including 2nd Place Trophy in the Junior Varsity Division, Best Stunts, Best Tumbling, and the Loyalty Award for 23 years of participation. Former cheerleading coordinator and varsity head cheerleading coach, Jennifer Martinez, attended

the competition in support of the JV squad. When asked what she thought about the routine she said, “I am so proud of the girls and their coaching staff! They gave an incredible performance.” The squad is comprised of 15 girls ranging from 2nd through 11th grades. Originally, the team had planned to compete in the Junior High Division, but with the last minute addition of two junior high students, the squad was elevated to the Junior Varsity Division. For many of the girls, this was their first season cheerleading. DCS cheer mom, Abby Matos was impressed that these young girls won 2nd place despite competing against older and more sea-

In Memoriam:

Longtime resident, TV pioneer Irene Y. Berman Irene Yelton Berman, a television and film industry pioneer, longtime Miami Lakes resident and original member of the Miami Lakes Cultural Affairs Committee, passed away on January 17 at age 85. Berman was the first female television producer in the United States with a long, successful career earning many awards producing popular shows like The Skipper Chuck Show, Miss Universe Pageant, New Year’s Eve in Miami, Getting Ready, the Orange Bowl Parade, entertainment specials, documentaries and educational programming.

She began working as an entertainer, a musician who sang and danced with her sister Doris at the age of 14. She became fascinated with television, performing on camera while wearing the required green lipstick for this new technology in the 1940’s. In 1960, Berman fought to study television (women were not permitted), finally convincing the professor to make an exception for her, winning a spot in the television class at Lindsay Hopkins School (the only Florida school teaching classes for jobs in television). In 1961, she was hired by

WTVJ Ch. 4 in Miami to produce the Skipper Chuck Show, a popular children’s show which aired from Palm Beach to the Keys and throughout the Caribbean. As producer, Berman was responsible for many innovative segment ideas, contests and other new show elements, as well as writing the show’s script. Around 1965, the show’s host Chuck Zink began expanding and getting involved in other types of programming and insisted that WTVJ have Berman produce those as well including parades, beauty pageants, game shows and entertainment specials – many of which

9-week financial course at ML Congregational More than 2.5 million families have positively changed their financial future through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU). The nine-week course provides families and individuals with practice tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term finan-

cial success. The course meets once a week where a different lesson is taught by Ramsey on DVD followed by a small-group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, relationships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies, and investing.

FPU will be held at Miami Lakes Congregational Church, 6701 Miami Lakeway South, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17. Contact Sarah Maceo at 305-822-4313 for more information and to register.

were “live” productions. She left WTVJ to form her own television production company “Video and Film Productions “known as “V&F Productions.” In 1978, her daughter Renée L. Sweeney began working with her on the nationally syndicated Wometco Home Theater television show “Getting Ready.” They decided to become business partners in 1981. Berman continued producing a variety of television shows and specials/promos/public service announcements and commercial spots. She had become well known and respected as a specialist in producing live television shows. Berman positively impacted many lives by producing telethons for such charities as Muscular Dystrophy, Easter Seals, March of Dimes, United Cerebral Palsy, Children’s Cancer Caring Center, United Negro College Fund, and the Miami Children’s Hospital. Behind the scenes, Berman served on many governmental advisory boards to promote the industry. She was instrumental in the formation of the Florida Film Office, and was personally responsible for helping to bring the L.A. production “Miami Vice” to Miami to shoot at the Ivan Tors Studios.

IRENE BERMAN One of her pet projects was to institute a curriculum in colleges and universities throughout Florida, creating the ability for students to obtain a college degree in television arts. When she retired from V&F Productions in 1990, she began writing a column called “Arts Scene” for The Miami Herald that ran continuously until she fell ill in 2008. Berman is survived by her daughters Renée L. Sweeney and Cheryl (Sweeney) Henry, husband Larry Berman, sister Doris Bernhard, nieces Doreen (Bernhard) Ernst and Darla (Bernhard) Olsen, and nephew Dale (Chick) Bernhard. Services were held on January 24 at the Caballero Rivero Southern Funeral Home in North Miami.

In Memoriam:

Civic volunteer, longtime resident Ramona Thompson Long-time former Miami Lakes resident, Ramona Thompson, 79, passed away at home November 23, 2014, from complications of a stroke. Her husband and daughters were with her that final weekend and she died knowing that she was loved, that she would be remembered and that her family would take care of each other. Her good works affected the lives of many throughout Florida. She was a woman of her generation, a professional volunteer, who was active for more than 60 years in numerous civic and charitable enterprises, including decades of leadership roles for Florida and General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Dade County Federation Board of Trustees, the March of Dimes and Citrus Health Network. She was never idle. Thompson lived an extraordinary life. She was born in Wrightsville, Georgia in 1935, but she moved to Miami as a young child, growing up near the Orange Bowl. She graduated from Miami Senior High in 1953. Perhaps it was the idyllic setting or the general happiness of the times, but her star began to shine in high school and it continued throughout her life. To this day her friends and colleagues remember her beautiful smile, those gorgeous brown eyes and her sense of humor. Always so poised, so well dressed and well spoken, she was the epitome of Southern charm and hospitality, a real lady.

The

It was in high school, in the 10th grade, when she met and fell in love with her partner for life – Eddie Thompson (Milton E. Thompson, Jr.). She was captain of the cheerleaders and Key Club sweetheart and he was an athlete and Senior Class president. They went to the University of Florida together and eloped on Valentine’s Day weekend of their sophomore year. She was a proud member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, an allegiance she maintained throughout her life as an active member of the Miami Alumnae Chapter. All three of her daughters are Tri Delta legacies. When Ramona and Eddie returned to Hialeah after college, they began their family and each began their professional, civic and volunteer activities. They moved to Miami Lakes in the early 1960s and remained in their Loch Lomond house for close to 50 years. While she loved living in South Florida and enjoyed her weekends at their Keys home in Islamorada, Thompson would forever consider Miami Lakes ‘home.’ Still, when Eddie retired in 2010 and closed the family business, Milton E. Thompson and Sons Roofing Contractors, Inc., they decided to return to the Gainesville area to live the country life in Fort White. While Thompson was raising her daughters, her mother-in-law invited her to join the GFWC Hialeah Junior Woman’s Club. She

was president four times of the Hialeah Junior Woman’s Club and was junior director for District 11. In 1970, after transferring to the GFWC Woman’s Club of Hialeah, she served as president and District 11 director. She then began several chairmanships at the county, state and general federation levels. Her club work culminated in 1996, when she assumed the presidency of the GFWC Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs. When her tenure ended, she served as chairman, from 20002006, of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. In 2012, the clubhouse of the Woman’s Club of Hialeah, located on 525 West First Avenue, was renamed the Ramona M. Thompson clubhouse in her honor for a lifetime of service. While maintaining her volunteer club work, Thompson also became a registered national parliamentarian. She was named Dade County Federation’s Woman of the Year in 1979 and in 1983 she received the Dade County Volunteer of the Year award. Throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s, Thompson was also the Mother’s March coordinator for March of Dimes Dade County and she served on the Board of Directors for more than 40 years. Her tireless efforts produced thousands upon thousands of dollars for this worthy cause. In the mid 1970s, she was also asked to join the board of directors of Citrus Health Network (originally North West Miami Dade Community

RAMONA THOMPSON Mental Health Association), a position she held proudly for more than 40 years. Ramona Thompson is survived by her beloved husband and best friend of almost 60 years, Eddie Thompson, her three daughters, Vicki Clifford (Fort White; John Clifford, Gainesville), Denise Paparella (Gino, Hollywood) and Lisa Davis (Dan, Apalachicola)

and her grandchildren Anthony and Lisa Paparella (Hollywood). The family hosted a celebration of her life on Saturday, January 24, at the Williams-Thomas Funeral Home in Newberry, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ramona Thompson Endowment at Hacienda Girls Ranch: 326 Croton Road, Melbourne, FL 32935.

M-D Schools Police partner with Homeland Security Miami-Dade Schools Police has partnered with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in adopting the “If You See Something, Say Something” initiative. Miami-Dade Schools Police (MDSP) Chief Ian A. Moffett was joined by Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, officials from local, state, and federal law enforcement as well as MiamiDade Council of PTAs/PTSAs president Joseph Gebara. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) became the first and the only school district in the nation to partner with Homeland Security and adopting the nationwide initiative. The initiative encourages the community to report suspicious behavior and activity to law enforcement. The partnership plays a pivotal role in helping to keep schools, students, and employees safe as evidenced recently by the courageous actions of a Miami-Dade Public Schools student who reported a threat to his school. Students, parents, employees, and the community are encouraged to report any suspicious behavior or activity in and around schools to 305-995-COPS or 855FLA-SAFE. Recently, a Miami-Dade middle school student demonstrated tremendous courage and integrity by coming forward and reporting a threat to his school. As a result of this brave student “seeing something and saying something,” Miami-Dade Schools Police was able to quickly and safely eliminate a potentially dangerous situation on school grounds.
