A Pace Class of 1980 alumna, Garcia has been closely tied to Pace and Catholic education for her entire educational career. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Learning Disabilities from Florida International University, she obtained a Master of Science in Special Education and a Certificate in Educational Leadership from St. Thomas University. Did You Know? (A monthly feature focusing on the history of the Miami Lakes community.) Did You Know that Merrett Stierheim was Miami Lakes’ first town manager in 2001. Following incorporation on December 4, 2000 and the subsequent inaugural town election in February 2001, the new but inexperienced Town Council needed a town manager to run the day-today operations and help make a smooth transition from MiamiDade County services to a fullfledged town, which encompasses 6.5 square miles. Mayor Wayne Slaton, the catalyst for the incorporation movement that commenced in 1995, picked Stierheim on an interim basis to the delight of council members and residents, who were familiar with his reputation first as a county manager for ten years, and later was labeled the white knight of sullied bureaucracies in the 1990s for erasing a $68 million budget deficit for the city of Miami rocked by a series of scandals. In the meantime, Miami Lakes hired a professional search firm to find a permanent town manager from a field of well-qualified candidates capable of resuming the task Stierheim started. After he was appointed town manager, Stierheim didn’t waste any time in getting the new startup government up and running. He hand picked government consultants Diana M. Gonzalez and Jorge Duyos to help the town with its asset inventory and building transition to identify and cata-

loging of all the assets within Miami Lakes’ boundaries. The program also determined the assets the town has within its corporate limits to incorporate in the town’s first budget to estimate the property tax revenues that town would be generating to run the bureaucracy. Stierheim also created the Miami Lakes Plan, a two-phase proposal to work with council members and residents to craft out the town’s vision, which included a mission statement, critical success factors and strategic goals. The second part of the plan developed a business proposal to create a rapport between the town and Miami Lakes’ business owners. The efforts culminated in the town’s first Strategic Plan, in which residents and business owners gave their own input on what the town should look like for the next five years. Following the results of the Strategic Plan, Stierheim said Miami Lakes should begin operating some of its own municipal services by the new fiscal year, October 1, 2001. Based on Stierheim’s recommendation, the Town Council approved the town’s new seal, which was created by Miami Lakes resident and architect Felicia Salazar. During Miami Lakes’ first budget hearings, lawmakers approved Stierheim’s proposal to abolish the special taxing districts for street lights and parks, which now allows residents on the west side of town to use the picnic and beach parks and tot-lots. Miami Lakes residents living on the east side were paying $1.2 million a year to use and maintain the parks before the special taxing districts were dissolved. Stierheim led the way for Miami Lakes gaining ownership and funding for Miami Lakes Park

MERRETT STIERHEIM and Royal Oaks Park, initially a tot-lot before the town turned it into a full-fledged park and recreation facility. Stierheim also helped the town take over its own building department activities and zoning issues from the county, and he managed Miami-Dade police services until the town and county agreed on a permanent contract in November 2001. A town manager screening committee, led by Stierheim, publicly interviewed a host of candidates for the permanent job, including Dennis White, who Slaton chose as the new town manager because of his experience with start-up governments. Following his stint in Miami Lakes, Stierheim was named superintendent of Miami-Dade Public Schools and before then was asked to come out of retirement and nurse Miami-Dade County back to fiscal health, managing a $4.5 billion budget with 28,000 employees, and 42 departments, including Miami International Airport, the Port of Miami, transportation, water and sewer, health and human services, police and fire rescue. Stierheim currently lives in Pinecrest with his wife Judy Cannon.

THE MIAMI LAKER

Salsa Fiesta opens its sixth South Florida location at 6769 Main Street in Town Center By The Miami Laker staff Salsa Fiesta, South Florida’s homegrown Mexican fast-casual concept, expanded to a sixth location in Miami Lakes, which officially opened to the public at 6769 Main Street in Town Center on February 2. The family-owned restaurant was established in Caracas, Venezuela in 2003 by Cesar Olivo, Adriana Perez Benatar and Samuel Perez Benatar. New to the concept, the Miami Lakes location will offer tableside service, a first for the South Florida eatery. During dinner service from Monday through Friday after 5 p.m. and all day on Saturday and Sunday – guests will be able to enjoy tableside service as opposed to ordering at the counter. “We’ve been playing with the idea of tableside service for some time and believe that our new location would be the perfect place to introduce it,â€? says Olivo. “Our guests’ comfort and enjoyment are our foremost concern, and we are excited to offer the additional element of tableside service at no extra cost and still stay true to the quality and price point they’ve come to know and love. This is a first for Salsa Fiesta as well as for the fast-casual industry here in South Florida.â€? Counter service will continue to be available during weekday lunch. After 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on the weekends, Salsa Fiesta’s signature fare will turn interactive with innovations such as tableside guacamole, also new to Salsa Fiesta. The Miami Lakes menu will features dishes for any Mexican food lover’s palate, including burritos and bowls, tostadas, and enchiladas. Miami Lakes will also offer authentic Mexican sandwiches including Pepito (steak, chipotle beans, poblano rajas, chihuahua cheese, chimichurri and arugula); and Veracruz (fish, chipotle beans, mango, cabbage, pickled onions, cilantro cream and arugula). Salsa Fiesta Miami Lakes features a retro vibe and dĂŠcor unlike the urban design found in its sister locations. A local Wynwood artist hand-painted the store’s walls, injecting an authentic Mexican feel into the space. The 100-seat restaurant, offering ample indoor and outdoor seating, will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, Monday through Thursday and Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. to midnight. For more information on Salsa Fiesta and its other locations, visit www.salsafiestagrill.com.

THE MIAMI LAKER

Town Council actions taken at February 3 meeting By Miami Laker staff The following is a summary of actions taken during the Miami Lakes Town Council regular meeting of February 3: • Councilmember Ceasar Mestre rescinded his resolution expressing the town’s opposition to the opening of a I-75 overpass onto N.W. 154 Street. The resolution was originally directed to the Miami-Dade County Commission. Mestre said the resolution was moot after he learned the town and the city of Hialeah entered into an interlocal agreement in 2007 to not open-up the Miami Lakes Drive overpass bridge.

• Councilmembers approved a resolution awarding two contracts for plumbing services to Pipeline Plumbing Services of Broward, Inc., for pipeline work and Right Way Plumbing Company for rightof-way way service in a total amount not to exceed $100,000. The services will include repairs to Roberto Alonso Community Center at Royal Oaks Park, Town Hall, Mary Collins Community Center and Miami Lakes Optimist Center. • Lawmakers authorized the town manager to enter into negotiations with Terracon Consultants, Inc. for geotechnical services for canal bank stabilization and for miscellaneous geotechnical services, and to Geosol Inc., for miscellaneous geotechnical services. Funding for the canal bank geotechnical work will come from budgeted funds in the Capital Projects Fund - Canal Bank Stabilization project. The miscellaneous geotechnical services will come from budgeted capital projects, general fund and public works town engineering services or planning consulting. • Lawmakers authorized the town manager to award a contract in the amount of $754,659 to Florida Engineering and Development, Corp. for the West

Lakes Phase II Drainage Improvement project. • Councilmembers authorized the town manager to award a contract in the amount of $42,751 to The Corradino Group to conduct a traffic concurrency study to develop an alternative system to evaluate and mitigate the transportation impacts of proposed development projects. Additional funding will come from a 432,000 grant from MiamiDade’s Metropolitan Planning Organization. • Councilmembers authorized the town manager to enter into negotiations with Robayna and Associates Inc. of Miami Lakes for surveying and mapping services for canal bank stabilization and for miscellaneous surveying and mapping services; and with Keith and Schnars, P.A. for miscellaneous surveying and mapping services. • Lawmakers authorized the town manager to apply to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Land and Water Conservation Fund Program (LWCF) for capital improvements at the Dog Park site. Grant funding would accelerate the bike trail component of the project and enhance the elements approved in the conceptual design. The grant project is not to exceed

$300,000 with 50 percent of the grant project cost coming from LWCF Grant Funding. The Town’s matching requirement of 50 percent of the grant project cost is budgeted in the Capital Projects Fund for fiscal year 2014-2015. • The Council approved an application by The Graham Companies for a mass replanting/ reforestation at the Cypress Village Shopping Center, under the provisions of the Town's tree removal ordinance and subject to conditions including removal and replacement of trees in accordance with an approved site plan. The project must include the removal of all black olive trees on the site and each black olive tree must be replaced by at least one other canopy tree subject to the approval of the Town Arborist. The Graham Companies request is part of a redevelopment/renovation project at the Cypress Village Shopping Center. The center has a large number of black olive trees, which are considered a nuisance due to their stain-causing leaves and berries, as well as aggressive root structure which tends to lift sidewalks and wrap around utility lines. Town staff indicated approval of the request, with the conditions recommended by staff, will advance the Town's interest in

removal of the black olive trees, facilitate redevelopment of the Cypress Village Shopping Center and in the long term result in a tree canopy that is at least as extensive as that which exists today. • Councilmembers approved a resolution sponsored by Vice Mayor Manny Cid to urge MDX to provide a discount to Miami Lakes residents on toll roads operated by the agency. • Councilmembers approved an ordinance on second reading to amend the 2013-2014 budget for carryover to fund the completion of projects budgeted and started in the previous fiscal year that were not completed. The projects include park furniture, digitization of planning documents, a park redevelopment program, Greenway Phase Two bike path, Youth Center at Park East, Miami Lakes Optimist Clubhouse and Lake Martha Drainage improvements. • Councilmembers approved Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez’ suggestion to have staff study the possibility of turning the unused 1-75 overpass near N.W. 154 Street into a passive park and walking path. The two-lane bridge is the property of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) which has awarded property to the Town in the past.

Pace boys, girls basketball teams run through Districts and Regionals

PACE boys basketball team (above) poses with their district championship trophy as back-to-back District 15-4A Champions. The Pace Lady Spartans basketball team (below) poses with their district championship trophy.

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Fans of Monsignor Edward Pace High School basketball have had a lot to enjoy over the past few weeks, as both the boys and the girls basketball teams have carried their successes from the regular season into district and regional tournaments. The Spartans boys basketball team went 17-9 in the regular season and were ranked #1 in their district. The team’s fast offensive style, which has earned them the moniker of the “Runnin’ Spartans,” has been led by senior guard CJ Fisher, the highest scoring playing in Pace boys basketball history. On February 6, Pace defeated the Booker T. Washington Tornadoes 84-64 to become backto-back District 15-4A Champions. Pace then advanced to the Region 4-4A semifinal with a 6146 upset win over Ransom Everglades last week. Pace played solid down the stretch, as Sebastian Jean scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and had six steals. C.J. Fisher added 10 points and five assists to help the Spartans advance to the semifinal game.

The Spartans faced Booker T. Washington on Tuesday in hopes of advancing to the regional championship game. At the same time, the Lady Spartans girls basketball team has had their own stellar season, racking up an overall 19-3 record and going 8-0 against district teams, including a 47-28 victory over Booker T. Washington on January 30 to win the District 15-4A tournament. Since then, the Lady Spartans have run through teams in the 4A

Regional tournament, led by players such as junior guard Destiny Wilson, who was recently profiled in a Miami Herald article. However, in the 4A Regional finals, the Lady Spartans came up short against Cardinal Newman High School losing their quest to continue earning a state semifinal spot, 58-40, the first such loss since 2005. Cardinal Newman advanced to the final four for the first time in its history. (Supplemented by Miami Laker staff.)

American falls short, 58-44, in regional quarterfinals Mike Akuchie scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Hank Hunter added eight points and 16 rebounds, as Broward’s St. Thomas Aquinas High beat American High, 58-44, in Region 4-7 quarterfinals last week in front of a packed crowd. American banked on its two best players, Kobe Johnson and Shaq Harris, better known as the Shaq and Kobe Show, as the two players draw comparison to Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’ Neal dur-

ing their championship years with the Los Angeles Lakers. Johnson and Harris each scored 12 points and helped the Patriots ignite an 11-4 run in the third quarter. But Hunter and Akuchie couldn’t be stopped, as Akuchie scored 10 of his 13 points in the first quarter and built a commanding lead that American couldn’t over come. American’s Matt Maturah scored 12 points.

Pace High School’s baseball season opens with 13th annual Pace Baseball Banquet By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s JV and varsity baseball players traded their uniforms for dress shirts and fancy shoes at the 13th Annual Pace Baseball Banquet on February 7. Held inside Pace’s Spartan Center, the Banquet was a formal Mardi-Gras-themed evening attended by Pace baseball players, their families, and friends to commemorate the start of the new baseball season. Pace varsity baseball manager, Thomas Duffin, welcomed guests and recognized the families and individuals who have supported the school’s baseball program over its long storied history. After dinner and dancing, the JV and varsity teams were brought up and introduced on the Spartan Center stage by their respective managers

and coaches, many of whom are Pace alumni and remember playing for the team themselves. The evening concluded with a silent auction and raffle for sports memorabilia, jewelry, and other prizes with funds going towards the continued beatification and improvement of the school’s baseball facilities. Thus far, the Spartan varsity baseball team is 2-0 in pre-season games and 1-1 in regular season away games.

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker On February 6, Monsignor Edward Pace High School hosted its annual Career Day where 50 career professionals spoke with current Pace students. Among these visitors was U.S. Congresswoman and Florida Representative Ileana RosLehtinen. Ros-Lehtinen told her life story, explained her work in Washington, and took questions from a packed room of students inside Pace’s Spartan Center before the school’s opening bell. For the rest of the day, students were sent from classroom to classroom to hear lectures and presentations from the lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, artists, entertainers, politicians, including Miami Lakes council member Nelson Rodriguez, and other professionals on hand. Many of the professionals who visited the school are Pace alumni themselves and were returning to their alma mater and happily commenting on Pace’s improvements. Following the day’s events, presenters were welcomed into the school’s Innovation Center where they were thanked by principal Ana Garcia.

By Daniel Saiz Special to The Miami Laker In 2008, Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) was rated an “A” school in education due to high test scores. Since that time MLEC has had to adapt to an increasing amount of changes that both the District and the state have enforced, including changes in standardized testing, salary cuts and layoffs and unreasonably high expectations. Every year since has been an increasingly difficult journey towards success, one that every faculty member and student has worked hard to overcome. In 2008, MLEC did not just get an “A” it started a legacy. “There’s a special type of student that attends MLEC. We all had hopes for success, which is evident in our high graduation rate,” said Gabriella Nuñez, a Cambridge 2013 alumna. “MLEC has always been a good school with plenty of resources and dedicated teachers. I was there during the transition from the FCAT to EOC’s and it was tough on the faculty but I did notice my science, math, history and English teachers planned to succeed.” With adamant determination and a desire to learn, MLEC students have been nurtured and

encouraged by talented teachers. It is the instructors, who take on the role of personal advisors and mentors, that conjure the want-to-learn attitude at MLEC and is one of the biggest factors in the school’s success. “It’s our students and our high school staff,” said English teacher Maria Krane. “We have kids who want to learn, that want to be here. If it weren’t for our student’s craving for knowledge and our staff who encourage them, we wouldn’t be what we are.” “How do I feel about getting our eighth, and seventh consecutive A? Absolutely ecstatic,” said school principal, James Parker. “I credit our success to our amazing faculty, staff and students and their dedication to our school.” Parker also stated that MLEC’s triumphs are in part due to how the school’s academies are modeled. Students apply what they learn in their core classes immediately so they retain the information and incorporate it into relevant every day situations. It prepares them for “the real world.” “At the end of the day, MLEC is an ‘A’ school because of the dedication that the facility and students have toward education,” said Nuñez.

Pace drama students wow audiences with ‘Oklahoma!’ By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker After closing out last year with a popular production of the musical “In the Heights,” Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Drama students were puzzled when they found out that their Winter 2015 production would be

the 1943 musical “Oklahoma!” When asked why she chose a country-themed romantic comedy set in 1906, Pace’s Drama teacher Christina Pla-Guzman said that it was not only because the play is considered to have ushered in the Golden Age of musicals, but she also wanted to get as far as possi-

ble from the urban, more modern setting of “In the Heights” and challenge her students. Senior Malik Mackey, who played Will Parker in the production, agreed that the show was a challenge in comparison to previous productions. “We had to put on accents and make characters from 1906 seem real,” said Mackey. Over time, the students stepped into the shoes of their characters and enjoyed the production. After a special morning performance for

middle school students from Our Lady of the Lakes and Holy Cross Lutheran Christian Day School, the play had its first public performance inside the Pace Spartan Center on January 28, with two more performances on January 29 and 30. After the last performance which took place in front of over 500 people, Pla-Guzman presented each of the graduating seniors with a rose to congratulate them on what would be their penultimate

production at Pace. Pace Drama will be holding its annual Gala, Night of Theatre on February 20 at 7 p.m. in the Spartan Center, where Drama students will perform their awardwinning pieces that they will be taking to State competitions in late March. After that, the group will continue working on its spring musical production of “Hairspray,” which will have public performances on April 21, 22, and 23.

MONSIGNOR EDWARD PACE HIGH SCHOOL’S Drama students performed the classic musical “Oklahoma” last month in the Spartan Center.

By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Twelve students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School headed to Washington D.C. in early January for Close Up, an educational experience for high school students to learn more about how the federal government and the nation’s capital operates. Chaperoned by Pace’s Dean of Students Valerie Lloyd and history teacher Victoria Spadafora, the students became part of a 30 year tradition for Pace which has been sending students to Close Up since 1985. “I wanted to witness firsthand how the government solves current issues,” said senior Justin Gerlin, one of the Pace students on the trip. “It’s an experience most students my age don’t have the opportunity to do.” Pace students traveled and

worked together with high school students from across the country, hearing their stories and perspectives, and making new friends. They split into workshop groups to visit locations around Washington D.C. such as the city’s famed memorials, the Smithsonian museums, and the Library of Congress. Workshops focused on current government issues and how the students would try and solve them. “We debated on issues such as gun control, immigration, and minimum wage,” said Pace senior Alex Hernandez. At one of these workshops, students and chaperones found an unexpected Pace connection when they ran into Lauren Fischer, Education Program Specialist with the U.S. Diplomacy Center and wife of Class of 1987 Pace alumnus Eugene Fischer, who is a Spanish teacher at a middle school

The students also visited government locations, such as embassies, the White House, and Capitol Hill, where they participated in a mock Congressional session to debate and vote on issues. Possibly one of the most unique experiences, however, was witnessing the Supreme Court justices in person deliberating over a case. On the first and final days of the trip, they explored Georgetown University and its surrounding community. “Close Up provides young adults with a more profound understanding of [the American government’s] inner components,” said Hernandez. “It also reminded us that we, as young adults, still have a very crucial voice in our government and society as a whole.”

The Walk for Life was one of three Walks taking place within the Archdiocese of Miami that day to raise funds for the Archdiocese of Miami’s crisis pregnancy centers, which offer material and spiritual support and counseling to women with crisis pregnancies. Pace High’s Walk, which was in its fifth straight year, was headed mainly by Pace Theology teacher George Rodriguez, who acted as an emcee for the morning’s events. In addition to raising funds, the walk aims to “raise awareness of the value and dignity of every human life, from conception to
