Jim Hamilton honored as S. Fla. Optimist of the Year By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Longtime Miami Lakes Optimist Club member Jim Hamilton has dedicated most of his life to helping kids excel in sports and in the classroom. Since joining the organization in 1973, Hamilton has held every position, including president, vice president, board member, commissioner and coach, while helping the club reach its goals by offering kids a chance to play sports, while their parents and other spectators cheer for them and improve their academics.

He also was the catalyst for increasing membership and volunteers while organizing fund-raisers that landed many sponsors to keep the 43-year-old organization running gracefully. Hamilton is indefatigable in his devotion to his volunteer work, and his lifelong dedication earned him the highest honor in recreation and sports. Last month, Hamilton received the South Florida Optimist International District of the Year Award, recognizing his achievements in the Miami Lakes community and became only the second

person at the Optimist Club to win the accolade. Current Governor of South Florida Optimist International, Jack McCall, was the first and it was only fitting that he present Hamilton the award during the annual Florida Optimist International Convention in Marco Island. McCall and Hamilton have been working side-by-side since they joined the organization 40 years ago. Hamilton, who once served as Lt. Governor for South Florida Optimist International, which covers Sarasota and Marco Island on the north, to Key West on the south, said he was humbled following the award presentation. “It’s a pleasure to be a member of the Optimist Club because I enjoy working with the kids,” he said. “All of us at the Optimist Club volunteer because we love helping kids reach their goals. It’s nice to be recognized.” Hamilton said the most rewarding part of volunteering for four decades is watching kids who passed through the club come back and volunteer or coach the younger generation of children. “When you coached them and they come back, it means you made a difference in their lives,” he said. “And that’s rewarding enough.”

MIAMI LAKES OPTIMIST CLUB member Jim Hamilton and South Florida Optimist International Governor Jack McCall. Growing up in Kansas, Hamilton, owner of Miami Lakes Sports Shop on Main Street, said he never got the chance to thank his coach for helping him develop his skills. But the experience rubbed off on him that he wanted to help kids find their niche in sports and give them pointers on how to maintain good grades in school and encourage them to attend college. As an incentive, each year the Optimist Club awards the Roland Gomez Scholarship to one collegebound female and male student who demonstrate excellence in school, sports and community service. McCall said he was honored to present Hamilton with the award

because he deserves it. “It was a thrill to do something special,” McCall said. “He made the Optimist Club what it is today.” But both Hamilton and McCall give much of the credit to their wives, who allowed them to spend a lot of time developing the organization and helping kids for so many years. “Pat McCall and Rosalyn Hamilton are the silent unsung heroes in the success of the Optimist Club,” Hamilton said. “We get the awards but our wives are the biggest supporters of the club,” said McCall. “They allow us to do so many things for the good of kids.”

Greg Netto named town’s Public Works director By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff With a wealth of experience in overseeing infrastructure projects for the U.S. and state governments, new Miami Lakes director of Public Works and Capital Improvement projects Gregory Netto has brought his proficiency to the 13-year-old town. Netto, 44, has been on the job for only six months and already

has his work cut out for him, handling a host of projects and beating tough deadlines to accomplish the town’s goals and objectives. It’s a job he takes very seriously. “This young city is progressing very well,” he said. “It’s a young city that’s thriving. The main goal for public works projects is making sure they are completed on time and within the budget.” The Broward County resident

Miami-Dade Parks breaks ground on new amenities at Norman & Jean Reach Park On Wednesday, December 4, the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. broke ground for new amenities at Norman and Jean Reach Park, 7901 N.W. 176 Street in Palm Springs North. The 20-acre park will receive a new perimeter walking path with shaded wayside seating, and new expanded patios around the recreation center and concession building. Among its amenities, this park has two lighted basketball courts, four lighted softball fields, two tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a picnic shelter. Miami-Dade County and the School Board of Miami-Dade County have, on an on-going basis, entered into agreements to provide for the joint use of their respectively owned public properties for recreational purposes. Palm Springs North Elementary School is adjacent to the park and the walking path will be built on both properties to provide a safe route for walking activities. This project was made possible with the assistance of Public Schools Superintendent Alberto

Carvalho, the School Board and the School Board chair, Perla Tabares Hantman, District 4, where Palm Springs North Elementary School is located. “Park projects, such as this one, make better use of our green spaces, providing residents and visitors with more opportunities to see nature and exercise,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “I want to thank the Parks Department for its continued efforts in helping us build a healthier and more livable community.” “This exciting endeavor marks a significant milestone in our efforts to revitalize this park and this neighborhood. I am thrilled that we are able to provide neighbors and their children with recreational amenities that they most enjoy and need,” said Bovo. The Miami-Dade County Parks Design and Build Team will work with Sagua Construction Inc. to construct the project. Funding of $154,000 for the project will be provided by the Quality Neighborhood Improvement Program (QNIP), Capital Outlay Reserve (COR), Impact Fees, and the Miami-Dade County District 13 Commission Office.

said he’s currently supervising several public works projects, including the water and sewer upgrades at Miami Lakes Optimist Park; the renovations to the Mary Collins Community Park West; and a storm water drainage improvement project along Miami Lakes Drive. When asked to compare the town’s position to his previous government jobs, Netto said they are virtually the same. “The construction industry is very dynamic,” he said. “You make decisions on the fly and you must meet the deadlines.” Netto earned both of his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering at Florida International University. He spent six years as a consultant for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and U.S. Department of Transportation. The Trinidad native also worked for the Miami Dade Expressway Authority and was the engineering construction operations manager for the city of South Miami. Netto said he learned about the vacant position in Miami Lakes and applied for the job because the location and the scopes of work were attractive. “Being director was also the attraction,” he said. Netto is also a professional engineer with the Board of

However, if the town manager is terminated prior to the expiration date of his contract, Miami Lakes must pay him a severance package, which will consist of a payment of 20 weeks of the manager’s base pay and benefits and a payout for all accrued and unused annual leave as of the date of his termination. The Miami Beach resident is currently in his second stint as town manager for Miami Lakes. In addition, councilmembers approved a contract for the new town attorney, Gastesi and Associates, to handle legal services and litigation after Mayor Wayne Slaton terminated the law firms of Geller, Greenspoon, and Marder, and Genovese, Joblove and Battista. Led by Miami Lakes resident Raul Gastesi, the firm agreed to do the work for $12,500 a month and an additional $200 an hour for any litigation service, helping the town to save money in the legal department. In other Town Council news: • Lawmakers unanimously voted to keep Manny Cid as the vice mayor. • Lawmakers on second reading approved an ordinance that would allow residents to decide through a referendum rather to increase the size of the town through annexa-

tion. Before, the decision was in the hands of councilmembers following a public hearing. • Councilmembers on second reading approved an ordinance to revise the town’s election campaign finance and reporting law to revert to state law, which was substantially modified in 2013. The new law provides substantial additional reporting requirements, including contribution limits. Since state law now allows up to $1,000 for an individual or political action committee to contribute to a candidate’s campaign, Miami Lakes decided to stay with the maximum of $250. • Lawmakers on second reading approved an ordinance to limit the mayor to having only one assistant to help him with town business. • Councilmembers approved an ordinance on first reading to amend the rules and regulation regarding zoning appeals. The proposed ordinance calls for the Town Council to review zoning appeals but only by a super majority vote of 5-2 instead of 4-3. Vice Mayor Manny Cid suggested the measure after residents indicated it’s too expensive and cumbersome for their appeals to be handled by the courts after their plans were rejected by the town’s Zoning and Planning Board. • Lawmakers approved a resolution by Councilmember Frank Mingo to create the town’s Par 3 Committee to make recommendations to councilmembers how to best utilize the golf course property. The group will consist of seven voting members selected by the mayor and councilmembers, and an additional five non-voting members, who have an expertise in law, land use, architecture and finance to help determine the best use for the land. Town staff will

recommend the non-voting members. • Councilmembers approved Cid’s request for town staff to create a local housing trust fund in order to participate in the State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program. SHIP funds will be used for emergency, life safety repairs to keep most vulnerable residents, housed and prevent unnecessary institutionalization. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez’s motion for a 90-day evaluation period to analyze the condition of Miami Lakes. The request comes as the town is preparing to move forward with updating the Strategic Plan and Comprehensive Plan. • Councilmembers approved Rodriguez’s request for the town manager and town attorney to work together and explore the possibility of placing collective fees on an abandoned home’s tax bill. • Lawmakers approved Councilmember Tony Lama’s proposal to ask the town manager to allocate up to $50,000 for state and county legislative services, to order a formal solicitation, and for the town manager to put together a formal evaluation team made up of town staff and members of the community. • Lawmakers approved Rey’s proposal of four capital improvement projects to be considered for state funding. The town will apply for the projects, with a total project cost of $1.4 million. The projects include West Lake Drainage improvement, Miami Lakes Optimist Park refurbishment program; the N.W. 170th Street Greenway; and for the Florida Forever program to facilitate the purchase of Madden’s Hammock.

Advanced Business Loans relocates to Miami Lakes Advanced Business Loans, now headquartered in Miami Lakes, is a one stop shop for financial business solutions with creative alternatives in accommodating businesses searching for loans, cash advances or equipment financing. Advanced Business Loans (ABL) has been working with businesses for 17 years and whereas most financing companies are rejecting small businesses owners, Advanced Business Loans is eager to seek out the best financial solution suited for each individual business and business owner. "While many financing companies are shying away from certain industry types, we are actively seeking to increase our portfolio of acceptable industries, " said ABL CFO, Rodney Rabah. "We can

assist with many industries that others cannot including, but not limited to, internet businesses, furniture stores, non-profit organizations, and professionals like CPA's and several others." In an economy where small business owners are limited in resources, a concept reinforced by the recent government shutdown, ABL encourages potential clients to avoid discrediting themselves from the opportunity of increased capital for their business. "There is opportunity for business owners outside of government loans," said Rabah. "A prime example of this is the government shutdown. We're open." The company strives to make more than simply a business transaction with clients, and hopes to

Town lawmakers and staff support ‘Movember Movement’ During every November, “Movember” encourages men to join the movement by growing a mustache for 30-days. This year, the Town of Miami Lakes mayor, councilmembers and staff supported the “Movember Movement” by growing mustaches of their own. Globally, the funds raised support world-class men’s health programs that combat prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health challenges. These programs, directed by the Movember Foundation, are focused on awareness, education, and research to achieve an everlasting impact on

the face of men’s health. To donate online, visit http://us.movember/com/donate and search for “Town of Miami Lakes.” You will then have the option to donate to an individual or to the town as a whole. “I was proud to grow my unkempt mustache in the month of November,” said Vice Mayor Manny Cid. “Movember is a great cause that focuses on men’s health. From its origins in South Australia to Main Street in Miami Lakes, the Movember movement is truly changing the face of men’s health.”

create partnerships of long-lasting business relationships. Appointments can be made by telephone, and the partners at ABL accommodate clients with one-on-one meetings regarding best suited options, tailored to each business situation and need. "We're local, we can set up face to face appointments to go over the details of every transaction. It's better than working with a faceless company out of the area," said ABL COO Ashley Ochoa. Bad credit does not disqualify business owners from obtaining the capital their business needs nor does insufficient loan quality. For those with bad credit, apart from offering financial alternatives, ABL also works with companies that repair credit. "We're in the business of giving money, not taking it," said Ochoa. "As a small business, we completely understand the nature of small businesses and the financial needs. We're here to help." "If you can walk into a bank for a loan, you're not our client," said Rabah. "We are an alternative source of capital for businesses.” Programs offered include lines of credit, small business loans, business cash advances, restaurant loans, equipment financing, inventory lending and accounts receivables factoring. Broward Superintendent Robert Runcie believes that “single gender opportunities provide choice and innovation options to meet the diverse learning and social emotional needs of our students.” “This bill will provide students the opportunity to be educated in an atmosphere that will facilitate learning and best fit their educational needs” said Flores. Sanchez said a client’s files of important work and information were hacked and held hostage and the principal owner was forced to pay a ransom to the perpetrator to release them undamaged. “That’s just an example of the difficult issue we will be tackling on a daily basis,” he said. “It

Troop 248 Girl Scouts enjoy camping and surfing adventure at Cocoa Beach Girl Scouts of Miami Lakesbased Troop 248 took on a new challenge perfectly suited to their Florida roots. They all learned to surf at Cocoa Beach, Florida, in October. Under the leadership of troop leader Adriana Schwinghammer, the girls had been planning this adventure for some time. They camped in tents in an ocean front park for two days, and had scheduled quality instructors to come and teach them.

The woman-run surf company, Surfet, was a great example to the scouts. Surfet brought out nationally-ranked surfer-girls to teach the scouts the basics. In one morning, all learning the important surfing skills, from the paddling out, to picking a wave, the vitally important “Pop Up,” and how to direct their boards. “I didn’t think I could do it, but then it was great,” said Kristine Kugler. “I rode all the way into shore.”

Within a few hours, each girl scout was picking and riding their own waves on long boards. Throughout the day, the tide receded and the wind increased making for higher and more challenging waves, but the girl scouts conquered the challenges and kept surfing until dusk. Surfer Chloe Schwinghammer said, “This is the coolest thing ever!”

By Jennifer L. Skold Special to The Miami Laker The holiday season is in full swing and many of us have check-

lists of things that must get done – presents to buy and wrap, cards to send, and family and friends to visit. This time of year also allows

many of us to pause and reflect on what has happened over the previous 365 days as well as plan for a brighter future. The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is no different. In 2013, WASD began a 15- to 20-year project that will cost $12.6 billion. This was a result of the fact that our treatment plants and infrastructure are aging – up to 80 years old in some cases – and need to be upgraded or replaced. The county’s water and sewer infrastructure has been serving more than 2.3 million residents, as well as thousands of visitors and tourists every day. The fact is that time and usage have taken their toll, and we have to act now to preserve the quality of our water and integrity of our wastewater system. As of this past October 1, there was an 8 percent rate increase for customers, yet the average residential bill has only risen $3.36 a month. So, for what amounts to pennies more a day per household, we’re able to invest toward improvements that will help us to continue delivering superior services to our current and future residents for decades to come. WASD is the largest water and sewer utility in the Southeastern United States and even with the rate increase, our rates remain among the lowest in the state and country. Upgrading the county’s infrastructure will also result in improved fire capacity, environmental improvements, economic growth and increased capacity. WASD recently completed its first major capital improvement project – a complex $77.5 million utility relocation project at Government Cut that increases both water and sewer capacity for the county’s northern municipalities. It was completed both ontime and within budget. WASD is investing in the future because our water is worth it.

Avoid Being a Target at the Mall There is no denying that the Holidays are here. The further we get into December, the crazier the stores seem to get. After all, this is the time of year when people are on a quest for the perfect gift for their families and friends. We can get so wrapped up in checking gifts off of to-do list that we get tunnel vision without stopping to think about what is going on around us. Every holiday season we hear about more people getting pick-pocketed, having cars broken into, or being held up in a parking lot. There are ways we can reduce the risk of having this happen to us. When heading out shopping, remember the following: • A woman should always hold her purse close to her body. Try to

carry a purse that zips on top and keep the zipper opening facing forward. A man should keep his wallet in the front pocket of his pants. • Wear your purse across your body so it lays flat against you. If you have a handbag with short handles, hold it close to your body and have a secure grip on it. • Do not hang your purse from the back of your chair when eating at the food court or at a restaurant. It is safer to place it on your lap, between your feet, or hang it from your knee. • Try not to call attention to yourself. Dress comfortably and try not to wear expensive jewelry. • When using the restroom, choose one in a high traffic area like the food court. • When leaving the mall, always have your keys in hand and

Shula’s ‘Who has Game’ is free public event on Dec. 14 Shula’s Athletic Club presents the first annual Who has Game, a physical challenge event that pits kids versus parents to determine who’s stronger and faster. The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 14, at the facility located at 15150 Bull Run Road. The first competition is set for 10 a.m. for kid ages 8 and under, 12 noon for kids ages 9-12, and 2 p.m. for kids ages 13 and up. About 150 kids and adults are

expected to participate in sporting and exercise activities such as basketball and football, and for parents more strength training for total body strength, power output, explosive and muscular balance. Performance training includes speed, agility and movement efficiency through sports specific planes of motions. The event is open to the public. be aware of your surroundings while walking to your car. Check to make sure that there is no one hiding in your back seat. • If you are shopping alone at night, ask a security guard to escort you to your car. • Try to park in a well-lit spot that is close to the entrance, or by a place where there will always be people around. • If you need to place purchases in your car and continue shopping, you should place them in your trunk where they will not be visible to thieves. You are more likely to have someone break your car window if you leave bags in your backseat out in the open. • When purchasing a big ticket item, such as electronics, you should head home immediately after purchasing it. Pay attention to vehicles around or behind you while driving home to make sure you are not followed and become a potential target for a future break-in. • If you need to withdraw money from a mall ATM, have your card in your hand and be aware of what is going on around you. If you encounter anything suspicious, cancel the transaction and walk away. • Never leave your receipt in the ATM. Always take it with you and check it against your bank statement. The more prepared you are, the safer you will be this holiday season and your only problem will be finding parking!

AMERICAN SENIOR HIGH swimmer Ryan Capote (left) won first place in the recent GMAC 50 free style and placed second in the 100 free style. He won first place in the District 100 free style and moved on to Regionals to compete in the 50 and 100 free style. Rafael Mora (right) won second place in the 200 free style at the GMAC meet. Due to a wrist injury, he was unable to compete further. Both are sophomores and team captains. Richy Pelaez is the boys’ swim coach at American.

Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s varsity boys basketball team has started their season 5-0, including winning their first and second district games against Mater Lakes High School 99-81 and La Salle Catholic High School 95-90. They have done this by using an up-tempo “run and gun” style of play. The "Runnin’ Spartans" average almost 100 shots per game, with almost half of those being 3 point attempts. They force more than 34 turnovers per game from their opponents, and most nights, all 15 players that dress for the game are expected to contribute to this “basketball-in-a-blender” approach. Along the way, the Spartans have put up some noteworthy statistics: • 88.3 points/game – 1st in the state, 3rd in the nation as of 11/22. • CJ Fisher, a junior guard, is 14th in the nation in scoring 24.0 points/game, and put up a season high of 37 against Mater Lakes.

• Irv Norvius is in the top 30 in the state in rebounding, averaging 9.3 rebounds/game. • Danny Duarte is in the top 30 in the state in scoring averaging 19.0 points/game, and he put up a season high of 30 points against Mater Lakes. • 99 points is the highest point total of the young season for the Spartans, and the second highest total in Anthony Serro’s two-year tenure as head coach. The Spartans scored 107 last year against Cooper City. During the Thanksgiving break, the Spartans took their high scoring act on the road to Palm Beach County where they played perennial state powerhouse Grandview Prep on Friday and Lake Worth Christian on Saturday at Suncoast High School’s Charger Classic. After the Thanksgiving break, the Spartans have home games against Booker T. Washington and Ransom-Everglades.

MONSIGNOR EDWARD PACE HIGH SCHOOL’S varsity basketball team has started fall season with a 5-0 record.

H. Gardens Middle School’s girls soccer team finishes second in district finals After being undefeated in their regular season, Hialeah Gardens Middle School (HGMS) girls soccer team made it to the quarterfinals. On October 15, they played at Amelia Earhart Park and defeated Miami Springs Middle 1- 0, advancing to the semi-final game. Later that day, they played against Highland Oaks Middle School in an intense and competitive game. The game ended in a 11 tie and HGMS won in penalty

kicks. Advancing to the district final game was a milestone for the team, being a "first" in the school's history. On November 4, the team played against Carver Middle School at the University of Miami. They ended the season second place in the district. Next year, HGMS girls soccer team will strive once again to become district champions.

Our Lady of the Lakes boys and girls sports teams off to great start Boys and girls sports teams from Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church are enjoying successful starts to the fall season. The JV flag football team is currently 4-0. Most recently, the Cheetahs defeated St. Kevin 34-6 on November 14. At a prior game versus St. Brendan, the team demonstrated outstanding defense and an explosive offense that began with a 65-yard pass from Justin Quintana to running back Michael Sanchez, his first touch-

down of the season, and a 33-7 win. On November 5, the flag team defeated St. Agnes Academy 6-0. Danny Delgado scored the winning touchdown (his fifth of the season) on a 24-yard run set up by a 30-yard pass from Quintana to Adrian Carballo. The JV boys soccer team, headed by coach Hector Pachas, is currently 2-0. Joseph Muniz, Justin Espinosa, and Daniel Luna have displayed great defense, and Justin

Despite Plantation’s star quarterback and cornerback Cris Lammons missing the game because of an injury, the Colonels ran their way to victory over American High (26-15), in the regional quarterfinals last month. Plantation recorded 218 total yards on the ground, with Antwuan Haynes rushing for 160 of those yards, and three rushing touchdowns. The Patriots kept the game close in the third quarter with two touchdown runs by Kama Burns

and Dawun Hylton and a safety. But the Colonels’ running attack proved to be too much for American and Plantation scored on a touchdown reception to seal the victory. Helping Plantation’s scoring drives were American’s 11 penalties for 75 yards. Also in high school football news, Dade Christian won’t be making a return trip to the state championship game after losing to Glades Day, (20-7) in the Class 3A regional semifinal game.

Quintana very solid goalkeeping. Gabriel Pachas and Miguel Palacios lead the team in goals with three each so far this season. OLL’s varsity girls basketball team is currently 4-0. With great overall team defense and rebounding by Gabriella Perez-Robles, Olivia Duff and Kristen Fleitas, the Lady Cheetahs defeated Sts. Peter and Paul 20-10 on November 7. On November 4, the primary baseball team defeated the Sts. Peter and Paul Panthers, 9-1. Pitchers Ben Segall and Dylan Alfaro collectively struck out 11 Panthers. The team is now 2-1.

Gina Shireman named American’s Teacher of the Year By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Gina Shireman has been named American Senior High School's Teacher of the Year, a title welldeserved considering the time she invests in her students both during and after school hours. Shireman currently teaches 10th grade English and intensive reading, but her hours teaching rarely end with the sound of the school bell. She also teaches an adult education after school program at American High School and an adult education program for Hialeah Gardens Senior High School. Shireman frequently partakes in community activities and committees believing it is important for people of all ages to be a part of something "bigger than themselves." She is currently a volunteer for the Youth Activities Task Force for the Town of Miami Lakes, though she has previously sat on the board and been elected

to vice chair. The Youth Activities Task Force serves the community through events like the Halloween Haunted House, Movies in the Park, the Bike Rodeo and the Spring Fling. "I am proud to be affiliated with the union that has been created between students and community. I am proud to know that I have lead my students on a path that I hope they will continue to journey after they have moved beyond their high school years," Shireman said. Since 2008, Shireman has also held the honor of being the advisor for American High School's Students Helping Achieve Philanthropic Excellence (SHAPE) Club. "It is Shape’s mission to empower high school students to achieve personal and professional success by providing philanthropic, leadership, career, and civic opportunities. This is something I take to heart. SHAPE has changed

my life as much as it has changed theirs," said Shireman. Shireman was previously an advisor for the Student Empowerment Project (STEP) that was funded by the State Farm Advisory Board and sponsored by Miami-Dade Community College. STEP aims to empower high school students to be strong leaders, to take charge of their own academic success, and to become active and informed citizens through service learning. Shireman has had a hand in molding her students into responsible citizens in addition to ambitious students. She happily invests her energy into cultivating character, integrity and honesty in and outside the classroom in a role she affectionately calls "co-parent". The love for teaching came in a "roundabout way" according to Shireman, who previously worked for the Department of Children and Families as a family services counselor. She felt she could make

a bigger impact on children through education and so earned her Master's degree in Exceptional Student Education and began working at New Endeavor Alternative High School in Okeechobee before arriving at American High School. Colleagues have taken note of Shireman's many responsibilities and genuine love for her students as they nominated her for teacher of the year for the 2013 to 2014 school year. "It is a great honor. We all work so hard," said Shireman. We are a team, a family. I was stunned to have been chosen because I do what I do because I genuinely love it."

Pace principal Ana Garcia and family honored with ‘One in Faith’award By Elvita Reigosa Special to The Miami Laker Monsignor Edward Pace High School principal and alumna, Ana Garcia, and her family were honored with the “One in Faith” award on Sunday, November 24, by Archbishop Thomas Wenski in a mass celebrated at Saint Mary Cathedral. The “One in Faith” award is presented to a family in the Archdiocese of Miami which represents excellence in evangelization and is firmly committed to

spreading the good news of our faith by helping those living without the good news know the fullness of life that Christ said he came to bring. The Garcia's have dedicated their lives to evangelization through community involvement in various parishes and schools. Ana and Eddy Garcia have been principals in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Miami for more than 15 years and their three children also live in the Catholic faith.

First Class FREE!

Jenise Garcia-Subveri is a special education teacher at Immaculate Conception Catholic School, Bryan Garcia is currently studying at the Saint Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in preparation for the priesthood, and Steven Garcia is active in the youth group at Immaculate Conception Parish. "Live in the faith. You teach by example. It's not so much what you say but what you do," said Ana Garcia when asked for advice for other Catholic parents. "Your faith is part of you, not just something you do on Sundays."

Girl Scout Troop 263 sponsors ‘Drug-free’ decorating contest The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) created a Red Ribbon Week patch to encourage and support Girl Scouts who wish to learn about Red Ribbon and participate in local efforts to educate youth about the dangers of drug abuse. Miami Lakes Girl Scout Troop 263 earned their DEA Red Ribbon Week patch with a two-part effort including sponsoring an anti-drug prevention education session where a Miami-Dade D.A.R.E. police officer presented a handson seminar at Miami Lakes Baptist Church. In the other part of their project, the girls, including Gabby Perez-Veliz, Syan Rivera, Roselyn Castillo and Katherine Duarte, sponsored a “Decorate the Door with a Drug-Free Theme” contest for grades 2 to 5 at Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC). The girls awarded prizes for the best three decorated doors. First prize winner was Maria Londano’s class which received a frozen yogurt party from

Mater Lakes Academy staff acts quickly to save fallen student athlete On Thursday, October 31, a 15year-old sophomore, Devon Octave, was in wrestling practice and collapsed. Mater Lakes Academy coach Brandon Neifeld called 911 immediately and sent for administration. The principal, Rene Rovirosa and security guard, Alexis Brunet began performing CPR on the student. When fire fighter paramedics arrived at the scene, he had stopped breathing and his pulse

was lost. He was clinically dead for seven minutes. Devon had a full cardiac arrest and was transported by ambulance to Palmetto General Hospital and then was airlifted to Miami Children’s Hospital. After being on life support for several days Devon is alive and has an implanted defibrillator to prevent another cardiac arrest. Mater Lakes Academy had just trained its staff 6 days before to

become CPR certified. After missing school for two weeks, Devon returned to school on Monday, November 18. Mater Lakes Academy is a Miami-Dade County Public Charter School, with students enrolled in sixth through twelfth grade. For more information, visit the school’s website at www.materlakes.org or contact the school at 305-512-3917.

Pace students, alumni join forces for Open House event By Maya Lora Special to the Miami Laker On November 16, Monsignor Edward Pace High School hosted its annual Open House to show potential new parents and students what being a Spartan is all about. Through an opening movie, delicious breakfast, and tours, incoming freshmen experienced what Pace High School has to offer them. Pace High School’s Open House is unique because it isn’t just run by the principal, Ana Garcia and faculty. Current students and proud Pace parents and alumni are also an essential piece

to this puzzle. They help guide tours and provide information, so that students and parents alike always have a person that they can relate to. Open House is an incredible tradition that shows future high school students and their parents why Pace is the perfect option for a comfortable assimilation into a broad new world in education. The event was a definite success, with hundreds of parents and students who had entered anxiously and unsure exiting the premises with smiles on their faces and bright opportunities in their future.

New Testament and World Deliverance Miami Lakes area churches churches provide Thanksgiving meals host special holiday services By Abraham Metellus Special to The Miami Laker New Testament Baptist Church (NTBC) partnered with local church, World Deliverance Church (WDC), on November 23 for its city project in Brownsville. Brownsville is a small town located in the Metropolitan Miami

area with a population of over 15,000 residents and 42 percent poverty rate. Birthed out of a desire to reach people in that community, Abraham Metellus (NTBC) and Solomon Blatch (WDC) got together to see how both of our churches could connect to make a

difference in that community. For three weeks the churches worked together to collect nonperishable items to assemble "Blessing Bags" with one purpose in mind – to mobilize the student ministry to make a difference in the community by providing meals for those who would otherwise not have a traditional Thanksgiving meal. On Saturday, November 23, despite the weather, both churches were able to feed over 100 families residing in the Saint George Apartment Complex. "My experience at Brownsville was very adventurous. Not even the rain could ruin our day with them. Their faces were lit up with smiles when we went there. It felt like we gave them hope for tomorrow and many more days to come," said Dade Christian student and volunteer, Bryson Mercer. The families appreciated the church presence there and thanked them for bringing joy and hope to the residence. Hearts were moved, lives were changed and bridges were built to establish a long lasting impression in that community. "Service in the City" a ministry of NTBC, will continue to serve this community through prayer, development and relationships. For more information, visit www.ntbcfl.org. Echoes of the Heart Reflections on Life and Community Living By Dr. Jeffrey E. Frantz, Miami Lakes Congregational Church (Contact Dr. Frantz on the web at www.mlcchurch.com.) It's okay if you don't get everything done. With the season of Advent upon us and with the buzz and excitement of Christmas around the corner, many of us, no doubt, are already too busy and stressing over deadlines. How does the holiday season work for you? Do you tend to get overcommitted, with too much on your plate? Does the season end up being more stress-filled than you would like? Much of our problem with the holidays is the level of expectation we hold. Simply put, we expect so much – all the things we think we have to do to enjoy the festivities and traditions of the season. Growing up in the Midwest, I remember my mother, every Christmas, sending out Christmas cards to this long list of people. It seemed like it took forever but it was like it had to be done. It was expected. It seems that the tradition of Christmas cards is fading, being replaced, if at all, by some on line expression of holiday best wishes. In addition, of course, there is the manic shopping, the baking and decorating. There are all sorts of parties; there are family and friends coming in from out of town. It is a wild and oft-times unwieldy time of the year. So, what are we to do? To begin with, can we cut ourselves some slack and agree that it's okay if we don't get everything done. Better still, how about us doing less? We only have so much time. Part of the challenge of the holidays is to allow our very real time constraints to shape the commitments and plans we take on. Again, there is only so much time; and it's okay if we don't do everything we did last year, or ten years ago.

After Care

In the fast pace of the season, it is important to remind ourselves that life is a process and that the deeper meaning and joy of life is in the quality of the process and not in the quantity of things we get done. During the holiday season, there is something to be said about stopping to smell the roses. Paradoxically, while we might expect our technology to be helpful in our busyness by making us more efficient, in fact it makes things worse by allowing us too many options. Simplifying our lives in ways more agreeable to our psyche and spirit is becoming increasingly important. In this regard, it is helpful to know ourselves and have a sense of our own limits. Capturing the simple joys of the season. I don't know about you, but I hate long lines at the supermarket. A colleague tells a story of the express line at the local Publix. It's almost six o'clock and the line stretches halfway back to the bananas. Tired after a long day and in a hurry to get home for a late dinner, the people glare at the cashier, half-audibly counting the items in the baskets in front of them. At the front of the line, an elderly woman opens her purse and painstakingly counts out some bills and a handful of coins. She says something to the cashier, who takes a package of cheese back out of the plastic shopping bag, places the cheese next to the cash register and rings up a new total. The coin counting begins again and finally the woman picks up her bag to go. Behind her, the line gets even more restless and you can feel the tension. No one says a word but they want to. They want to ask, what's taking so long? No doubt many are thinking,

when I get to the cash register, I will efficiently swipe my card and be on my way. Meanwhile, the next man in line steps up to the cash register, speaks to the cashier, then picks up the abandoned cheese and rushes over to the elderly woman before she can leave the store. He hands her the package of cheese and as everyone watched, she first tries to reject his offer; however he insists. And then she motions for him to bend over and she kisses him affectionately on the cheek. Suddenly, in the heart-beat of that moment, the mood at Publix is totally changed. The express line lets out a collective awww and the shoppers smile at each other as the man quickly finishes paying for his groceries and exits the store. It is a hectic time of year. Yet, look what an act of kindness can do. It can change everything. My hope for us all this holiday season is that we not beat ourselves up too much thinking we've got to be superman or superwoman between now and the new year.
