Town Council incumbents inaugurate campaigns for November 2016 By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Three Miami Lakes council members who are facing reelection next year are seeking to keep their political jobs for four more years. Councilmembers Manny Cid, Tony Lama and Nelson Rodriguez filed paper work last month to run in the town’s November 8, 2016 general election, when their at-

large seats are up for grabs. The mayoral seat is also at stake but Michael Pizzi has yet to open up a campaign account. The incumbents, so far, haven’t drawn any challengers. Cid, who was first elected in 2012, has launched a host of initiatives, including live webcasting of town council meetings, E-Library Pilot Program, helping Miami Lakes become the first city in

Florida to accept and play prerecorded video public comments during municipal meetings, performance based budgeting and creating the Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame with private money. Cid, a 22-year resident of Miami Lakes, also created a program for the Town to hire school crossing guards and implementing a Sunday on-demand bus service

Town Council incumbents open reelection campaigns (Continued from Page 1) for church services, and he worked with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. to secure funding to keep the Miami Lakes senior classes running after the state nixed funding for the program. Cid, who was elected to serve as Vice Mayor for the last fiscal year, said his track record speaks for itself and is seeking to finish the work he MANNY CID has started. “My voting record during the past three years fulfills several promises that I made to the residents of Miami Lakes,” Cid said. “Serving as a councilmember in our beautiful town for the last three years has been a great experience. I have truly enjoyed serving the residents of Miami Lakes and hope they give me the opportunity to continue to serve them.” Before he was elected to the Town Council, Cid served as the senior legislature aide to two state representatives. Cid is vice president of Always At Your Side Adult Day Care Inc., in Miami Lakes. Lama, director of Cloud

Solutions, was a political neophyte in 2012 when residents elected him to represent District 4. A seasoned veteran of the contact center software industry, Lama launched the town’s new mobile application, Lakes Life, for residents to track various town services, find local businesses, and report potholes and sidewalks that need repairing. The app also allows users to access the Miami Lakes Marketplace, the town’s online business TONY LAMA d i r e c t o r y, search for a new doctor, places to eat or shop by using keywords such as pizza and dentist. Through the app, residents can also track down and ride Miami Lakes Moover buses in real-time and view bus routes and schedules for the transit service. “Over 1,200 residents of Miami Lakes downloaded and continue to use this app to stay in the know and report issues ranging from maintenance to code compliance matters,” Lama said. Lama and Rodriguez recently initiated the first Miami Lakes Traffic Summit, where the state and county brain trust gathered to

offer solutions to the traffic problems throughout the town. In October, the Town Council adopted a transportation improvement plan to incorporate the proposed traffic solutions into the town’s new Strategic Plan. “We sponsored the first Traffic Summit and the results of that effort have led to several key initiatives that we are now embarking on to solve the traffic challenges we face in our community,” Lama said. During his first four-year term, Lama also sponsored a charter amendment to bring fairness to the selection of volunteer committees, the Green Energy/PACE Initiative, and the Lake Water Quality Awareness program. Lama said his work is not complete and is seeking another fouryear term to accomplish his goals he set three years ago. “My work is not yet complete,” he said, “With the support of the residents and council, I hope to implement key traffic reduction initiatives to dramatically improve the traffic condition in Miami Lakes, one of which is making Miami Lakes a golf cart friendly community.” Beautification is also on Lama’s list of priorities. “It will be an exciting next five years for Miami Lakes,” he added. Rodriguez, a Coral Gables fire-

fighter, was also a political novice when residents elected him to Seat One in 2012. He co-sponsored legislation making it a prerequisite for kids participating in sports and other activities at the town’s parks and community centers to have NELSON an EKG to help RODRIGUEZ detect any problems with the heart, in the wake of Brenna Vergara’s sudden death. The 11-year-old died after she collapsed during dance rehearsal from Wolff-Parkinson White (WPW) syndrome, a heart condition caused by a rapid or irregular heartbeat during physical activities. Rodriguez said over the past three years, the town has cut expenses, kept the property rate for taxes low, improved communications with residents and upgraded the parks and recreation centers.

If elected, Rodriguez wants to resume carrying out his campaign promises, which include the conversion of the Miami Lakes Drive/Interstate 75 overpass into a pedestrian and bike friendly park. “It will bring together our greenways and bike lanes, while allowing our residents to gain access to a 30-acre park being built west of I-75,” he said. “I look forward to the next the next few years as we continue to work on some very important initiatives. There’s more work to be done such as the development of three new parks: The Par 3 the Dog Park and the Miami Lakes Drive Bridge Park. Although the past three years have been challenging, we continue moving the town forward.” Rodriguez has been a Miami Lakes resident since 1992, and he serves as an adjunct instructor for the Institute of Criminal Justice at Miami-Dade College. He is also the chair of the town’s Education Advisory Board and president of the Miami Lakes K-8 Center PTSA and coordinator of the Miami-Dade PTA Council.

First Lake Patricia Winter Boat Parade Saturday, Dec. 5 Miami Lakes resident, Marcelino Sotolongo, has resided in the neighborhood around Lake Patricia since 1999. After seeing the Winterfest Parade in Ft. Lauderdale, Sotolongo began thinking about organizing a winter boat parade in Miami Lakes. So far five residents have committed their boats to the parade which will launch from the beach and across Lake Patricia dressed in Christmas lights, a colorful spectacular for residents and visitors to witness from their backyards and from the beach. If enough interest is generated from the event this year, Sotolongo may expand the event for the 2016 holiday season. The winter boat parade on Lake Patricia is scheduled for Saturday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m.

10-foot tall Menorah to light up Miami Lakes as part of world’s Chanukah observance Chabad Miami Lakes will ignite a public 10-foot menorah to be erected near Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street, followed by a community-wide celebration on the third night of Chanukah, which falls on Tuesday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m. The lighting is one of 10,000 public menorahs worldwide that symbolize the universal message of religious freedom. The ceremony will feature music, Chassidic dancing, latkes, donuts and dreidels. City and community officials will be in attendance. Following the menorah lighting ceremony, hundreds will dance, sing and eat the night away. The public menorah lighting is organized by Lubavitch Rabbi Mendel Weiss, who remarked, “The Menorah serves as a symbol of Miami Lakes' dedication to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship God freely, openly, and with pride. Specifically in America, a nation that was founded upon and vigorously protects the right of every person to practice his or her religion free from restraint and persecution, the Menorah takes on profound significance, embodying both religious and constitutional principles.” Miami Lakes’ menorah is one of thousands of large public menorahs sponsored by Chabad throughout the world, helping children and adults of all walks of

Sunrise Presbyterian hosts a piano concert on December 5 Sunrise Presbyterian Church is hosting a concert featuring renowned pianist Ciro Fodere at 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 5. The church is located at 18400 N.W. 68 Avenue. Fodere recently played with the Uruguay Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Miami. As the First Prizewinner of the XIV Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofieff International Competition, Fodere is a pianist with a variety of musical interests. His latest performances have been described as “masterful, electric, by turns fiery and lyrical” by The Post and Courier, and as “technical sheen articulation, alert dynamic shading, and an imaginative approach” by The Miami Herald.

Besides soloing with both major orchestras in Uruguay, making his debut at age 14 with the Philharmonic of Montevideo, Fodere has been a soloist three times with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, and performances with the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic. Other orchestras include the Philharmonic of Extremadura, and the New World Symphony, where his most recent performance of the “Rachmaninoff Variations” on a theme by Paganini under the direction of Alasdair Neale, was acclaimed by the audience and major newspapers in Miami. Tickets for the concert are $20. For more information, call the church at 305-821-5841.

Summary of actions taken at Town Council’s November 3 meeting By The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Town Council approved four resolutions to allow Lennar Homes Corporation to build 482 residential units along N.W. 154 Street and west of 87 Avenue, that included the developing company dedicating 5.19 acres of Madden’s Hammock to be used as a passive park to upgrade the neighborhood parks concurrency. At the November 3 regular Town Council meeting, lawmakers approved some adjustments made to the original Dunnwoody Lake development plan Miami Lakes approved in 2002, when the Lowell L. Dunn family submitted a rezoning proposal for 509 singlefamily homes and town houses and a shopping center. The family is selling the 144acre tract to Lennar Homes, which requested the changes to the Declaration of Restrictions for setback requirements for the homes, right-of-way and open space for the passive park. Once the company pulls its first permit, it must reimburse Miami Lakes $1.8 million the town spent on roadway upgrades on N.W. 154 Street between 84 and 87 avenues to increase mobility, and donate $300,000 to be used strictly for education, as part of the original development agreement. Lennar Homes also agreed to donate $200,000 to Miami Lakes to create more space for neighborhood parks to meet the concurrency once the development project is built.

In other town news: • Tim Daubert was elected the new vice mayor. • Lawmakers, on a 5-2 vote, approved a preliminary plat to subdivide a property at 7242 Loch Ness Drive to build five singlefamily homes, a proposal many residents living in the neighborhood had opposed. Vice Mayor Tim Daubert and Councilmembers Caesar Mestre, Nelson Rodriguez, Tony Lama and Frank Mingo voted for the preliminary plat, while Mayor Michael Pizzi and Councilmember Manny Cid voted no. Town staff said the preliminary development plans meets the town’s criteria for approval, including meeting traffic concurrency, and the developer is planning to install infrastructure and an eight inch line to improve the quality of the water pressure in the

area. Residents said the new homes, which will face the cul-de-sac, don’t meet the requirements for development. But lawmakers said they had to approve the preliminary plat since it meets the criteria and Florida law. Rejecting the plan could lead to a lawsuit, lawmakers said. Councilmembers approved Pizzi’s suggestion that the site plans go before lawmakers for their approval and a public hearing to make sure the proposed development doesn’t encroach on residents’ quality of life. • Lawmakers gave their final approval for an ordinance to remove the requirement that rooftop air conditioning units on town homes be screened from view at eye level and instead require that such units be a neutral color.

We get letters:

We Stand Corrected Due to a production error, Miami Lakes Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez was misidentified in a caption on Page 10 of the November 20 issue.

From staff at town hall to the cashiers at the nearby Publix, everyone has had touching things to say about “Papi.” The posthumous award of “Keys to the Town of Miami Lakes” and adding “Sergio Campos Way” to Lochness Drive mean the world to us! Thank you for recognizing my dad in these special ways. While our broken hearts are far from mended, they are comforted by the outpouring of support. My parents have lived in Miami Lakes, in the same house, since I was a teenager. Dad was the president of the Loch Ness Homeowner’s Association for

more than two decades, and mom – everyone knows – was his righthand person in the association. To say they love Miami Lakes is a major understatement! You have my deepest gratitude for returning that love in-kind. My thanks to The Miami Laker for the opportunity to share this message with the residents of Miami Lakes. Wishing all of your readers a blessed holiday season. Lissette Campos-Perez Tampa, Florida (Daughter of Sergio and Miriam Campos.)

While the loss has been devastating to our family, the community support has brought healing to our broken hearts. Pace High’s Jorge Arenas and Chris Rodriguez sign their letters of intent

PACE HIGH SCHOOL celebrated the newest chapter in its academic and athletic traditions as two Pace baseball seniors signed Letters of Intent for Stetson University and Jacksonville University on November 19. Shortstop Jorge Arenas signed with Stetson University and pitcher Chris Rodriguez signed with Jacksonville University in a ceremony in front of the student body inside the Pace Spartan Center. Donning the shirts and hats of their respective universities, Arenas and Rodriguez were joined on stage by their family members, fellow baseball players, Pace principal Ana Garcia, and their Pace baseball coaches Tom Duffin and Chuck Lyman.

Dade Christian, Mater Academy fall short in Regional Finals First Baptist Academy dashed the hopes of Dade Christian’s football team of winning a state title, as the Crusaders fell to the Lions, 35-7, in the Region 2A Final last week. The Crusaders’ defense allowed 206 rushing yards on 19 carries for two touchdowns. The Lions (10-1) held Dade Christian (9-1) scoreless until the fourth quarter, when quarterback Alec Carr connected with receiver Keith Terry for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Under first year head coach Nick Martinez, a Dade Christian alumni, the Crusaders captured the district championship and won their Region semifinal game, hoping for a shot at the state tournament for the first time since 2012. But the Lions proved to be too much to handle from the opening kickoff when the Crusaders fumbled the ball and the Lions scored

on the ensuing play, and subsequently exploited the Crusaders’ defense in the first three quarters of the playoff game. Martinez’s team improved from last year, when the Mike Sonneborn-coached team finished with a 6-4 record and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Martinez said he’s looking forward to next season. In another playoff game of local importance, Mater Academy’s first year coach Rocco Casullo watched his former team, the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders, rout his new squad 60-7 in the Region 4-7A final. Rocco led the Raiders to state titles in 2012 and 2014. He took over the Mater Lions in the fall leading them to the team’s first postseason victories. But in the region final, the Raiders held the Lions to 127 total yards and only six first downs.

Eric Wagner, 16, scores Hole-in-One at Shula’s course Dave Wagner, organizer of a traveling golf group called the South Florida Swaggers, decided to bring his 16-year-old son, Eric, along with his group to play the Senator Course at Shula’s Golf Club. Even though only 16, Eric, a member of the Golf team at Archbishop McCarthy High School, can play. In fact while playing with his dad, he used a 5Hybrid on the 178 yard par 3 hole and made a hole-in-one. The proud father bought a round of drinks for his fellow golfers while Eric enjoyed a soft drink. The golf club congratulates Eric and imagines that Wagner will soon follow in his son’s footsteps.

MLEC welcomes new principal Lourdes Diaz

LOURDES DIAZ (left), newly appointed principal of Miami Lakes Educational Center, is pictured with former principal James Parker, and new assistant principal Beatrice Sears.

By Stephanie Brito and Elizabeth Gonzalez Special to The Miami Laker James Parker, the “booming voice” of Miami Lakes Educational Center, retired in early November, passing the torch to the school’s next “Top Jaguar:” Lourdes Diaz. Being the next “Top Jaguar” of MLEC is a tough job. The school is known for its top students, active clubs and its environment is nothing like a typical high school. Last year, MLEC became an “A” school for the seventh consecutive year. The job is meant for someone looking for a challenge, like Diaz. “I want to be in a place like this, that is challenging, where there are ideas, where there is academic thought, where there are discussions and conflict in a good way, where students are learning and challenging themselves, taking things to the next level,” said Diaz. This idea of an intellectually

stimulating environment echoes Diaz’s college education. Diaz graduated with a major in both Literature and Psychology from Brown University, an Ivy League University known for its tradition of intellectual inquiry. She finished her graduate work at Nova Southeastern University where she received a Master’s degree in English Education. Diaz began her teaching career while she was still a college student, working as a substitute teacher at Miami High, her alma mater, during her winter and summer breaks from college. It is there that she got her first official teaching job and then moved the following year to Barbara Goleman Senior High School, where she taught English for five years before pursuing a career as an administrator. She started as an assistant principal in Coral Park Senior High and after completing a principal training program,

became principal of Hialeah Middle for eight years. She is passionate about her job as a high school principal because she loves education and she relishes the opportunity to “create people, not products.” Given that her leadership style is participatory, Diaz plans to become increasingly involved in MLEC. She is already engaging with students by attending as many events and club meetings as possible. Noticing that social media plays a huge role at MLEC, she created a Twitter account to interact with students, MLEC clubs and organizations and the community through social media. But like all great leaders, she is not just observing, rather she is already beginning to leave her own imprint. Seeing that the school has a unique dynamic, Diaz has decided that MLEC only needs changes in the future that will help it grow and continue to succeed. “We will change when the time is right, we won’t do it just because a new principal is here and it's time to change, that's not really my style. Instead, I want to continue the many the wonderful things that Mr. Parker has started and established here. I don't have any crazy agenda, this school is awesome and I want to maintain that,” said Diaz. As principal, Diaz’s top priority is giving back to the students by making decisions which students can benefit from and creating opportunities that will help them improve. “When I’m going to make a decision I also think back to what he would have done. He always said ‘Make a decision, the decision that is right for the students, and you’ll always be able to sleep at night’ and I always think about that,” said Diaz, quoting Dr. Marcos Moran, her inspiration as a professional.

Ivonne Moton is American’s Teacher of the Year teachers. “Children love to be disciplined,” she said. “I teach my students to analyze each paragraph if they feel the tests are difficult. The key is how you teach them.” American’s NAF, Be Future Ready program, has become a successful model for other MiamiDade schools, Moton said. NAF is a national network of education, business and community leaders who work together to ensure high school students are college, career and future ready. Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho recently recognized Moton and the NAF program at American during a School Board meeting. Moton said she prepares her students for internship jobs by first disciplining them, then teaching them to respect their older peers, speak articulately and dress well for job interviews. “I like to be the mediator between the children and their parents, and we teach them the word teamwork,” she said. “If there is a problem in school or on the job, we encourage them to work it out and don’t let it get out of hand.” Moton said most of her students heeded her advice and they went on to successful careers. “Some of my students are pharmacists, bailiffs, legal clerks, police and correctional officers,”

she said. “I see them in Publix and they say ‘remember me, Ms. Moton? Look where I am today thanks to you.’ That’s the legacy you want to leave with them. I want to take them from A to Z and beyond.” Moton was born in Germany, where her father was stationed in the military, and her family moved to Ohio when she was five-yearsold before relocating to Miami. She graduated from North Miami High and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Leadership from St. Thomas University and Master’s Degree from Southeastern Nova University. Before pursuing a teaching career, she followed in her father’s footsteps and joined the U.S. Army, and she was honorably discharged from the military. She taught at Edison, Norland, Lake Stevens Middle before she landed at American High in 2000. Moton has to retire based on the Teacher’s Retirement System pension program, but she would love to be a substitute teacher, while also running her Children Please Read Program. “I am going to miss touching students’ lives,” she said. “I will always wonder how they are doing now that I am not here. I wish there were more teachers like me.”

crime by underscoring education is the best option to staying alive. “If they are not educated enough, their options are the streets and jail,” said Moton, who teaches Intense Reading for students taking the FCAT and ACT and runs the technology program at American High School. Moton can add a top honor to her legacy, as she was named American High’s Teacher of the Year for 2015-2016, and became the third member of her family of educators to win the accolade. Her mother, Norma Vance, and sister, Glinda Moton, won Teacher of the Year honors for their respective schools. “I felt all that I accomplished in the school system and to be recognized for it, I was surprised and honored,” she said, while sitting at her desk in her classroom. “But I teach, not for the paycheck, but from the heart. My reward is how kids succeed and that’s teaching and working at 100 percent. When a student scores a 34 on the ACT, that’s my reward because when we retire, these kids are running the world.” Moton said students’ success on exams lies in the hands of their

OLL participates in Give Miami Day for fundraising Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School (OLL) participated in its first Give Miami Day fundraising campaign, with hopes to raise some much needed funds for playground improvements. Thanks to the school community as well as church parishioners, the school raised $15,756 with 174 gifts in less than 24 hours. “Through the generosity of our school family and parishioners, we will be able to remodel our children’s playground and have a safe environment for them to play at our school,” commented Ricardo Briz, Our Lady of the Lakes principal. “Having parents, alumni and parishioners joining together to donate to our ‘Little Cheetah’s Playground’ is a living example of our school’s mission statement.” While donations could be received at any time over 24 hours, OLL offered some incentive prizes for gifts made at desig-

Pace High Mission Club volunteers with Feeding South Florida Food Bank By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Students and teachers from Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Mission Club helped change lives this Thanksgiving season by volunteering at the Feeding South Florida food bank on November 17. Ten Pace students and Pace religion teachers Dr. David Masters and Nelson Bonet sorted 7,498 pounds of food at Feeding South Florida’s food bank in Pembroke Park. The nearly four tons of food will be used to create 6,248 meals to feed families in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties in the coming weeks. Arelis Ferro, a Pace alumna from the Class of 1997 and Feeding South Florida’s Special

Events coordinator, invited the club and their moderators to volunteer. The Mission Club acted as one of the main contributors for Pace’s annual Tons of Love food drive, which concluded on November 20 with over a ton and a half of food donated. “These students have shown their devotion not only by attending this field trip, but also by sorting an additional 3,300 pounds of food at Pace,” said Bonet, one of the club’s moderators. “They are always willing to be of service.” The club collects clothes to donate year round and continues to collect food even after Tons of Love. Bonet says that in December, the club will be adopting a family for Christmas by collecting gifts for them, followed by a visit to take them out to lunch.
