Main Street welcomes season at annual Festival of Lights

AN OVERFLOW CROWD filled Main Street on November 26 during the Festival of Lights event. Santa Claus was on hand to do the countdown along with 93.9 MIA host Gigi Diaz and the Debs children of Miami Lakes - Elizabeth (5), Ryan (3) and Tyler (7), who helped Santa pull the big switch to turn on the lights.

Miami Lakes voters say ‘enough is enough,’ Cid defeats Pizzi in runoff The Miami Laker staff In an overwhelming show of support for a change in leadership, Miami Lakes has a new mayor as voters elected Councilmember Manny Cid over incumbent Michael Pizzi in a run-off election which drew a relatively large turnout for a special election, but ended an era for a man who sat on the Town Council since incorporation. Cid collected 77 percent (4,951 votes) to Pizzi’s 23 percent (1,477 votes), a 3-1 majority, in the November 29 run-off election. Cid, 33, becomes the third elected mayor in Miami Lakes’ 16-year history. Cid, along with Council-members Nelson Rodriguez and Tony Lama, and Councilmember-elect Luis Collazo, will be sworn into office to serve their four-year

MAYOR-ELECT MANNY CID terms before the start of the December 6 Town Council meeting. Cid, co-owner of an adult daycare, collected 46 percent of the vote in the November 8 election but was forced into a run-off because neither candidate collected 51 percent to win outright. Pizzi, 53, garnered 31 percent and former mayor Wayne Slaton

23 percent. Cid, who defeated then-incumbent Mary Collins in 2012, opted not to run for his old seat and instead ran for mayor since his support base suggested residents were seeking a change in leadership. Cid ran on a platform of lowering taxes, securing Miami Lakes its own zip code to lower auto insurance premiums, eliminate wasteful speeding and adding more police officers and fire rescue units. With a much added boost, Rodriguez, Lama and Collazo, Councilmembers Ceasar Mestre and Tim Daubert, and Slaton all endorsed Cid for mayor. Pizzi lost his first-ever election dating back to the now defunct Miami Lakes Community Council in the 1990s. He was the first council member to be elected in 2001 when he ran unopposed, and he was reelected in 2002 and 2006.

Manny Cid overwhelms incumbent Michael Pizzi in runoff; Pizzi’s $2.5 million legal claim still lingers (Continued from Page 1) Pizzi, an attorney and polarizing political figure, ran for mayor in 2008 and won reelection in 2012, but his second term was interrupted by federal bribery charges and he was subsequently

suspended from office while he awaited trial. He was acquitted of all charges in 2014 but Florida’s Governor Rick Scott refused to reinstate him. Pizzi sued him in the Florida Supreme Court to lift his suspen-

sion. Pizzi later sued Miami Lakes in the lower courts to get his old job back in 2015. Despite filing another lawsuit against the town to pay his attorneys’ fees during his corruption trial and reinstatement cases, Pizzi decided to run for reelection. He touted his leadership of accomplishments including opening up N.W. 87 Avenue to alleviate

traffic congestion, building a stand alone government center, youth center for children and kids with special needs, and lower property taxes. But his $2.5 million lawsuit against the town for his lawyers’ fees and constant bickering with council members since his return signaled the end for Pizzi, as residents were seeking a new town executive. The town settled his reinstatement lawsuit for about $460,000. Miami Lakes and Pizzi’s attorneys agreed to abate the second lawsuit for six months to give the town an opportunity to seek litigation against the insurance carrier for refusing the cover the mayor’s legal bills. The abatement ended last month. Perhaps the final straw was a campaign mailer by Miami Lakes

Voters for Excellence in Government which circulated accusing Cid of accepting illegal campaign contributions from Ernesto Perez, founder of the now defunct and beleaguered Dade Medical College. According to The Miami Herald, Perez pled guilty to making illegal campaign contributions which were received Cid. Cid denied the claim. Pizzi also had his named smeared during the election season, when a political group called Leadership for Florida’s Future circulated a mailer saying Miami Lakes has spent over $260,000 in legal fees to fight Pizzi’s lawsuits. “Don’t forget these are legal bills Michael Pizzi racked up in an attempt to stay out of jail after he was caught on tape by the FBI for taking a cash bribe inside a closet at city hall,” the mailer stated.

Car accidents are the result of negligence and many times cause more than just auto damage but personal injury as well. The unfortunate event can lead to expensive repairs and high medical bills, so you should always contact an experienced attorney. Your insurance company claims to have your side but in fact, they are trying to minimize damages and avoid giving you fair compensation. At the law office of Delgado & Delgado, we make it our priority to work your case efficiently and effectively, getting you the compensation you deserve. L.A. Sweetz on Main Street welcomes Main Street Players theatre holidays with variety of cupcake flavors group offers first Spanish By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The holiday season is here which means seasonal treats are in store at Main Street’s only cupcakery, L.A. Sweetz. Residents and visitors can plan on cupcakes in flavors such as pumpkin pie, peppermint, eggnog, chocolate mint, apple pie and champagne. The rollout of seasonal flavors is one of many things L.A. Sweetz owner Letty Alvarez is looking forward to as the year comes to a close. Alvarez, a previous contender on the Food Network hit show Cupcake Wars, once again participated in the filming of an episode for the show Unique Sweets which showcased the store’s guava cupcake, the first of its kind in Florida. The episode,

season 7 episode 3, aired on Sunday, November 27, Alvarez’s birthday. “I like to think united worlds with the guava cupcake,” said Alvarez. “Everyone else does red velvet, but I wanted a cupcake to represent my culture and my love of baking.” Those looking for cultural twists in their desserts can head to L.A. Sweetz on Fridays for happy hour cupcakes that were first featured on Cupcake Wars – the guava cupcake, the Ricky Martin cupcake-coconut rum cake soaked in dark coconut rum with dulce de leche butter cream and candied coconut bits, or the margarita cupcake – lime tequila soaked cupcake, topped with cream cheese buttercream and course sea salt

grounded on top for a salty and sweet flavor. Alvarez has also started franchising opportunities and opened the first franchised L.A. Sweetz in Orlando. This makes Alvarez one of only 20 women across the nation that is a franchisor. “Franchising is a male-dominated field,” she said. “Not only am I a woman but I am also Latina so I feel a lot of pressure but I also feel a lot of pride because not only am I going to spread the love of my concept in my home state, but to the country and spread cupcake love around the world. That’s a huge accomplishment and I never dreamed it would be this way. I started this business just with an idea that I was going to be a baker tucked away in a tiny shop. We started this with $5,000 and no college degrees and here we are five years later. I am so immensely proud of what my husband and I have accomplished.” L.A. Sweetz offers over 75 flavors and seasonal flavors and is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. 6702 Main Street “We have a lot going on, but I like to bite off more than I can chew, that’s just my personality! But you know I wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Alvarez. “And I’m so blessed to have such a strong support system that lives and breathes L.A. Sweetz and that nine years into it no one wants to throw cupcakes at me is great!”

show with La Pasión Según Antígona Pérez during two weekends, Dec. 9-11, 16-18 La Pasión Según Antígona Pérez by Luís Rafael Sánchez opens at Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street, on December 9. The set is in place, lines are being learned, and a great deal of hard work is going into producing the first Spanish show at the playhouse. For this production, the seating arrangement of the Playhouse has been altered to perform in a profile theater setting to maximize the space and have a more intimate experience with the audience; something never done at the Main Street Playhouse before. La Pasión Según Antígona Pérez is a relevant piece of theater that will incite questions about how government has a direct impact of how we live our lives, how we receive information from the media and the role that we all play in fighting fear and retaining civil liberties. Held captive in the palace of Generalísimo Creón Molina, Antigona Pérez is a political prisoner awaiting execution. During her stay in the dungeon, visitors come to test her values, and she’s

strongly criticized by the press in charge of misrepresenting the truth. The production brings this classic story of civil disobedience to modern day. Through this story, values are corrupted, fear controls decisions, and it takes courage to remain loyal to our beliefs. The show is directed by Isaac Polanco, and will be stage managed by Daniel Nieves. The cast includes: Antígona by Anne Garcia, Aurora by Adela Romero, Creón Molína by Alejandro Milían, Pilar by Salomé Muriel, Monsenor Escudero by Amarú Pereyra, Irene, Journalist 5 by Carmen Albernas, Journalist 1 by Camila Rodriguez, Journalist 2 by Rosalyn Tavarez, Journalist 3 by Henri Sosa, and Journalist 4 by Leopoldo Anzola. Performance dates are December 9-11, and December 16-18. Fridays and Saturdays are at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $20, and may either be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to showtime, or online at www.mainstreetplayers.com.

Vergara had been dancing since she was a toddler at Dance Creations Dance Studio (DCDA) in Hialeah and had begun attending Miami Dancity Studios. The Breanna Vergara Foundation was founded by Jesus and Claudia Vergara, Breanna’s parents, with hopes to offer opportunities for children to participate in extracurricular activities, such

as dance, while creating awards for heart screenings in an effort to identify children at risk of WPW and any other form of sudden cardiac arrest. The Vergaras, at times with others and sometimes just amongst themselves, released balloons on the 9th of every month for their daughter. The 5K and Color Run is an event whose vibrant colors and picturesque moments embody the youth and radiance of the fiercely talented and beloved Breanna Vergara. Miami Lakes residents launch park fitness bootcamp By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes resident Nicole Alarcon has an entrepreneurial spirit. As an administrative professional working in corporate America, to co-owner of a barbershop, Mary Kay Beauty Consultant, and the owner of a mobile spa party business, Alarcon is moved by possibility and opportunity. But the one constant in her life over the last handful of years has been a deep desire to eat well, exercise and live a healthy life. This motivation and success with her health is what led her to merge her entrepreneurial talent with a passion for fitness and create her business, FitLikeMe. FitLikeMe was launched over a year ago and has grown primarily through word of mouth. The business focused on nutrition assistance through meal planning and education for clients but has since grown with the addition of coowner, Vivian Inza, and a partnership with the Town of Miami Lakes. As part of the partnership

Alarcon is now adding bootcamp classes to her list of services which take place at Miami Lakes Park West, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. “Nutrition and exercise go hand in hand,” said Alarcon. “You can’t have one without the other and achieve your ultimate goals. Personal training wasn’t originally part of what I offered because my business is mobile, but I saw that it was really becoming a demand when clients started asking for it, so I became certified through the Shaw Academy and started looking for parks. Even though it’s hot, people like breaking the cycle of being stuck indoors at the gym and many times newcomers find gyms intimidating so I knew I wanted to host classes at a park.” When it came to the location, Alarcon turned to what she knew like the back of her hand, her hometown of Miami Lakes. A partnership was made and bootcamp classes that feature exercises like cardio, high intensity interval training, plyometric movements

and more are now available for only $5 per class after the initial free class, a rate that’s a third of the standard pricing in most gyms for classes. Attendees are asked to bring a towel and bottle of water while Alarcon and Inza, who alternate teaching the classes, provide equipment and lighting. All class members can join a chat room through an app that serves to foster friendship, accountability and community. “I know what it’s like to eat healthy and wonder why nothing changes or working hard at the gym and not seeing results,” said Alarcon. “A lot of people have questions just like I did and it’s important for me to share some of the knowledge I’ve gained from experience and certifications. Out of all my business ventures, this has been the most satisfying because I’ve had clients tell me that I changed their life. It’s something that comes natural to me self-improvement and trying to help others.” For more information on FitLikeMe bootcamp classes or customized meal planning, follow FitLikeMe on Instagram or contact Alarcon at fitlikememiami@ gmail.com or 305-300-0121.

Pace raises over ton and a half in annual food drive By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker The Pace High School community continued its almost 30-year tradition of collecting food for its annual Tons of Love food drive, with the final tally equaling over a ton and a half of food. Pace students, parents, teachers, staff, alumni, and friends donated non-perishable and canned food items to benefit the needy in South Florida and Haiti. This aid to Haiti is in addition to the $19,000 raised by the Pace community thus far for the recovery efforts of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. On November 18, the last day

of school before Thanksgiving break, the Pace student body celebrated its annual Thanksgiving/ Tons of Love Mass. Following the mass, the Pace community and student organizations were recognized for their service and aid done to benefit local organizations and Pace’s sister parishes and schools in Haiti. The sophomore Class of 2019 also won the coveted Tons of Love trophy for being the class which donated the most food. The food donated goes out to ministries, pantries, and food banks across South Florida and half a ton of food already having been donated to Haiti.

Goleman student hand makes pillows for breast cancer patients By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Kelsy Ruano is a girl scout, AP student, and creator of handmade pillows for breast cancer survivors. Ruano, a senior at Barbara Goleman Senior High School, personally knows two breast cancer survivors – a family friend and her grandmother. Moved to action after witnessing the discomfort and pain they suffered after undergoing mastectomies, Ruano searched for special-made pillows to be used under the arm to keep the elbow from hitting the surgery site. Though she found heart-shaped

pillows online, they were expensive, and she thought she could sew something similar, using skills acquired as a girl scout. The project took hold, and soon she found herself planning and making enough pillows to donate to the Sylvester Cancer Center at the University of Miami. Supported by her family, Ruano got to work. She chose assorted fabrics, purchased materials, and began sewing by hand until recently when she got a sewing machine. The first batch of 25 she created were donated, and the second batch of 37 were handed out at an event at the cancer center specifi-

cally for cancer survivors. “I had two people I wanted to help so I tried to do that by making these pillows to make their life a little easier. I really want to thank my mom because she’s the whole reason I’ve been able to do this. She has helped me with buying supplies and donating the pillows,” said Ruano. Finding use even for the leftover fabric from the pillows, the talented high schooler created seatbelt cushions for cancer patients with ports on their chest where catheters enter for chemotherapy who note the irritation when the seatbelt rubs against the port. “I’ve been a girl scout since the second grade, I’m an eagle scout now, and in high school I’ve joined Key Club, National Beta Club, and National Honor Society so my entire life has been about community service,” said Ruano. “The only difference for me is that I’m devoting a lot more hours to one specific project. I have really enjoyed doing this and it’s given me the opportunity to talk to a lot of staff members at the school who have loved ones that have fought cancer.” This is the second cancer-related community service project

KELSY RUANO has been sewing heart-shaped pillows that are more than decorative by helping breast cancer survivors recuperate. Ruano takes on, the first was the delivery of gift bags to the Sylvester Cancer Center that contained socks, hand sanitizers, notepads, pens and sour candy to alleviate the sour taste in the mouth after chemotherapy. With a full schedule of advanced placement courses, dual enrollment in university classes, and participation in multiple service clubs Ruano has a full plate but she makes time for the projects that matter to her. “School has really prepared me

with learning time management,” she said. “I get better and better at managing my time and I treat making the pillows as another club that I need to schedule into my day.” As for including others in her project, Ruano is already thinking of the future. “I definitely have plans to continue the project and I would like to hold a workshop to teach others how to make the pillows so we can continue making them and donating them to those who need them,” she said.

White House honors Miami-Dade Public Schools as best large school district for personalized learning Miami-Dade County Public Schools was recognized at the White House as the leading large school district in innovation and personalized learning for all students, particularly underserved students. Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho had been invited to attend a discussion convened by the U.S. Department of Education and the White House where the county was recognized. The USDOE’s Office of Innovation and Improvement partnered with the White House Domestic Policy Council to invite a select group of school superintendents from around the country who are leading personalized learning efforts nationwide. MDCPS was the only school system

from Florida among the 35 districts invited to attend the one-day, roundtable discussion at the White House. “Education is the great equalizer,” said Superintendent Carvalho. “Miami-Dade County Public Schools is honored to be recognized for our innovation and personalized learning for all students. This recognition is a testament to the teaching ingenuity of our exceptional team of educators and the impact of the school district’s academic rigor and enrichment opportunities for students.” Some of M-DCPS’ personalized learning includes Digital Convergence. The multi-year initiative has resulted in the distribution of over 140,000 digital

devices to enhance the learning experiences and complement the 11,620 interactive boards previously installed in classrooms and 45 million square feet of physical space configured for Wi-Fi connectivity. iPrep Academy, a K-12 school led by Carvalho, features personalized learning that leverages an innovative, technologyrich environment to provide robust personalized learning experiences for all students. The iPrep program has been franchised into 11 other high schools as choice academies and has paved the path for iPrep Math, a personalized and blended instructional program in the District’s 49 middle schools that combines adaptive software with

face-to-face instruction to encourage an inquiry-based approach to the study of mathematics. The superintendents at the roundtable discussion also described the barriers and challenges they each identified to provide equity and access through personalized learning. Among the topics were students’ access to technology at home, equitable access to qualified teachers who can effectively facilitate personalized learning for all students, and reconciling the delivery of personalized learning with the demands of a state-mandated assessment program/timeline.

Com. Bovo supports senior housing project

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY COMMISSIONER Esteban Bovo Jr., has teamed up with the Hialeah Housing Authority to develop a new senior housing project in District 13, to be located at 987 West 75 Street in Hialeah. Bovo presented $250,000 in funding from his office budget carryover that will be invested directly in his district with the development of this project. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Hialeah Mayor Carlos Hernandez, State Senator Rene Garcia and Hialeah Housing Authority Director Julio Ponce joined Bovo for the check presentation.

Carlos Gimenez wins reelection as M-Dade Mayor Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez won another four years in political office when he defeated former Miami-Dade County School Board member Raquel Regalado with a 12-point margin in a race that turned downright nasty including a lawsuit by Regalado to kick her opponent off the ballot. Gimenez, 62, defeated his political nemesis 56 percent to 44 percent in a runoff election that saw the incumbent mayor resume his dominance from the primary in August. Gimenez took 48 percent of the vote to Regalado’s 32 percent to force the runoff. Gimenez will be termed out in 2020. Regalado, daughter of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, filed a lawsuit to disqualify her opponent over a flubbed qualifying check, but a judge tossed out the litigation.

Bob Graham’s Bobcat Dance Team performs at Veterans Day Parade

Corvo and Calas Law Firm is hosting its annual Pajama and Book Drive through Dec. 16 By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff With the holiday season nearly here, many charities and organizations choose to host a toy drive for underprivileged children, but after seeing a news report that research shows children who are wearing clean pajamas are psychologically healthier, calmer at night, and have more self-esteem, Lourdes Corvo decided to start her own drive. Corvo, a long-time Miami Lakes resident and co-owner of Corvo and Calas Law Firm with Perla Sole Calas began a pajama drive to help children in need. After visiting a domestic abuse center, Corvo said toys were piled up in a room nearly to the ceiling, but the kids had no clothes. The firm has collected about 350 pajamas every year. This is the law firm’s 10th annual Pajama and Book Drive. The firm invites colleagues, fami-

lies, friends and members of the community to donate new pajamas and books for children from newborn to 16 years old. Pajamas could be donated in any size. Donations will be collected through December 16 and can be dropped off at 14750 N.W. 77 Court, Suite 300, in Miami Lakes, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Donations are tax-deductible. The firm will be donating the pajamas and books on December 18, just in time for Christmas, to the Miami Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department which will then distribute it to children who are victims of domestic violence. The department puts together Child Admission Packages that includes a pajama and book when they come into the shelter. For more information call 305827-0084.

THE BOB GRAHAM EDUCATION CENTER Bobcat Dance Team had the opportunity to participate in the Town of Miami Lakes 37th Annual Veteran's Day Parade. This special event took place on November 6, as the town honored active and retired military members for their dedication and service to this country. The Bobcat Dance Team walked and participated in the parade along with other schools and groups as a way to thank our veterans. The parade route began at Bull Run Road and the route continued south on Ludlam Road to Eagle Nest Lane, where the dancers were given an opportunity to perform for the community in front of Main Street. This was a humble and joyful experience the dancers had along with their families under the coaching of Mayri Martinez.

Removing gifts and shopping bags from cars, and locking doors may seem simple enough, but many residents simply forget or get sidetracked due to the stress of the holiday season. Al Avila, former Bobcats head baseball coach and director of athletics at St. Thomas University from 1988-92, recently was inducted into the Bobcat Sports Hall of Fame at the Eighth Annual Stone Crab Dinner for Athletics on Sunday evening at the Fernandez Family Center. Avila, who graduated with both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University, is currently the executive vice president for Baseball Operations and general manager for the Detroit Tigers. Avila was presented into the Bobcat Sports Hall of Fame by Bobcat Sports Hall of Famer and current LSU head baseball coach Paul Mainieri. While studying Sports Administration at St. Thomas, Avila began his coaching career under Mainieri and also interned with the Dodgers and their operations in Latin America. In 1988, Avila was coaching as a full-time assistant coach under Mainieri who, following that season, became the head coach at the Air Force Academy. In turn, Avila was named as Mainieri's successor as head baseball Coach of the Bobcats and later also became STU's director of athletics. Avila continued as head coach and AD through the 1992 season, leading the 1991 and 1992 Bobcats to Florida Sun Conference Championships and was named Florida Sun Coach of the Year in 1991. His 1992 team was ranked number three in the NAIA National poll.

In 1992, the Florida Marlins named Avila as assistant director of Latin American Operations. He was later named director of Latin American Operations and would spend a total of nine seasons rising up the ranks with the Marlins, first as director of Scouting, later as assistant GM and ultimately interim General Manager. Avila helped build the 1997 World Series Champion Marlins and was instrumental in signing stars such as Livan Hernandez, Luis Castillo, Alex Gonzalez, Edgar Renteria as well as Miguel Cabrera, who like Avila. later would become a Detroit Tiger. In 2002, Avila joined the Detroit Tigers and has been with the storied franchise ever since. In 2012, Avila was inducted into the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame and in 2015 was named the Detroit Tigers Executive VP and General Manager, making Avila the first Cuban-born GM in Major League Baseball history. In his 15-year career with Detroit, the Tigers won the

American League Pennant in 2006 and 2012 and won four straight AL Central titles from 2011-2014. As GM of the Tigers, Avila has signed stars such as outfielder Justin Upton and pitcher Jordan Zimmerman and continues his leadership of the day-to-day baseball operations of the franchise. Part of a three-generation MLB family, Al's father Ralph is a retired vice president of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Al and his wife Yamile have three children: Alex (most recently a catcher with the Chicago White Sox), Alan (assistant counsel for Baseball Operations for the Tigers) and daughter Annelisa Marie. Avila epitomizes St. Thomas University's Leaders for Life credo and his story is a prototype for today's Sports Administration students on how to succeed in the industry. Avila becomes the 12th member of the Bobcat Sports Hall of Fame.

Mater Academy loses 50-10 to St. Thomas Aquinas in Region 4-7A football final Despite the FHSSA’s suspension of five players from the St. Thomas Aquinas football team, Mater Academy failed to capitalize on the team’s misfortune and was routed 50-10 in the Region 47 A final at Milander Park. The Raiders (10-2), seeking to

become the first team from Broward County to win three consecutive state championships, faces Venice on Friday in the Class 7A state semifinal. St. Thomas Aquinas, ranked ninth in the nation by USA Today, played like defending state champions, especially without five key players (Tyler Dunning, Elijah Moore, Jason Munoz, Marcus Dumervil and Ryan Maine), who missed the game following a postgame brawl against Dwyer in the regional semifinals. Raiders quarterback Jake Allen went 14-of-17 for 178 yards and threw three touchdown passes, as the Lions’ defense didn’t have an answer. St. Thomas Aquinas scored 27 unanswered points to force a running clock in the fourth quarter. Mater Academy (10-2) cut the deficit to 23-10 early in the third quarter, when the Lions scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass. But the Lions failed to score on their following possessions and turned the ball over. Mater Academy was seeking to advance to the state semifinal for the third consecutive season. Mater Academy defeated McArthur of Hollywood, 14-13, to advance to the Region 4-7A final, and beat Cooper City, 35-21, to advance in the second round of the postseason. In other playoff action, the American High Patriots, winner of five consecutive district titles, failed to advance to the first round of the playoffs in a loss to Columbus 33-16 in a Region 4-8 quarterfinal game at Tropical Park.

Goleman’s Natalie Costero signs with Lynn Univ. By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman High softball player, Natalie Costero, marveled at Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton’s composure each time he steps up to the plate. In fact, Costero watches video of the three-time All-Star to emulate his game and to make her a better player. “I like that he’s focused on every pitch, and each time at bat he has a plan,” said the senior shortstop and pitcher. “I need to have a plan like that.” Costero’s plan has worked, as she recently signed to play with Lynn University in Boca Raton, but her team’s modest goal of winning the district championship would close out her senior year in high school on a good note. Wining the state title would even be better. Costero, a Miami Herald AllDade player, said she chose Lynn University because it’s closer to

home. “It’s close to home but not to close,” she said as she signed her Letter of Intent while flanked by her family, coaches and teammates at the Miami Lakes school. Costero, who recorded a .537 batting average, four home runs and 80 strikeouts in her high school career, said the college offers her a better environment with a good coaching staff in a family-oriented atmosphere. She declined other offers, including Barry University and FIU. Costero is following in the footsteps of her two older sisters, who also played softball in high school and college. One played at Warner University and the other attended Agnus Scott College. “My sisters were really good and I grew up around them in a good environment,” Costero said. “I played softball after watching them and liked it so much.”

Costero and the Gators last won the district title when she was a freshmen. She wants to win it again but she knows a tough road is ahead for her team. The Gators are playing in a tough district this year with defending champion American Heritage standing in their way. Goleman was the district runnerup last year. “They are tough and we know what awaits us,” she said. “To win, we all have to be on the same page. It’s not what one specific player needs, it’s what the team needs to win.” Costero reminisced about the experience of winning the district title her freshmen year. “It was breathtaking, I was speechless,” she said. “Once you take on your challenges and achieve your goals, it leaves you breathless.”

FIU receives $1 million grant to award fiveyear scholarships in technology-related fields Florida International University was one of three state universities to receive $1 million in student scholarships to help erase any financial barriers for students and increase the number of graduates in computer and information technology, thanks to the National Science Foundation. Along with the University of South Florida and University of Central Florida, FIU was awarded the five-year scholarship grant in support of the collaborative Florida IT Pathways to Success project that includes recruiting, retaining and providing scholarships and other support to academically talented students in IT-related disciplines who have financial

need. Located in Florida’s three largest metropolitan areas, the three universities comprise the Florida Consortium of Metropolitan Research Universities. Collectively, the colleges serve about half of the students and produce about 65 percent of the IT graduates in the State University System. Historically, science, technology, engineering and mathematics – or STE – degrees take longer to finish than other majors. The scholarships program helps financially-strapped students, who are close to completing their degrees. STEM is an important part of

The All-Conference honor is the first for Hogan, who is considered the powerhouse of the Panthers in her final season. She recorded 329 kills, 384 points, 882 attacks and 10 doubledoubles. Hogan also posted the sixthhighest hitting percentage among C-USA leaders this season with a 3.63 mark. During her final year at FIU, Hogan surpassed her previous totals in almost every statistical category. As a junior, Hogan posted 205 kills, 262 points, 618 attacks and 98 digs, finishing third on the team for kills with 2.1l per set as compared to 2016’s 3.23. Hogan, a Missouri native, was a huge asset to this year's lineup. Her aggressive play helped FIU to battle against the competitive CUSA programs this season. She continued to raise the bar and broke several of her season highs in multiple matches this year, posting an impressive 30.5 points against Middle Tennessee on November 10. She contributed 25 kills in 48 attempts.

Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School students flourish in robotics programs Students at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School are gaining exposure to robotics and programming as the STREAM program flourishes. STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Religion, Arts, and Music and represents an integration of the arts and religion as students are prepared for STEM related fields. Forty students in sixth through eighth grade are taking robotics classes. Students are introduced to concepts of engineering, robotics, and programming using Lego Robotics kits. The eighth grade students make up the school’s robotics competition team. They are gearing up for their first competition this month through the First Lego League Robotics Competition. Students in first through fifth

grade are also getting an opportunity to learn about robotics through the school’s weekly after school robotics enrichment program. Students work in teams to create and program robots while working on important skills such as collaboration, communication, and problem solving. “The students are getting an excellent opportunity to learn about what it takes to program a robot. It’s exciting for me to see the ‘aha’ moment when the students get the robot to run correctly or complete a challenge. This also teaches the students about perseverance and problem-solving as they run into problems in their programming,” said Kristina Bacallao, STREAM coordinator at Our Lady of the Lakes.

PARTICIPATING in Our Lady of the Lakes STREAM program are students (from left) Christian Besu, Ari Chenet and Thomas Somarriba.

Pace’s ‘Til Death Do Us Part sells out three shows By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Pace High School’s acclaimed drama program held a trio of soldout performances for its Fall 2016 production ‘Til Death Do Us Part on November 1, 2, and 3. What made this production unique is that it is the first completely original play created by Pace Drama alumni and students. The murder comedy-mystery set in a 1980s wedding was written primarily by Jamie Adelson, a Pace alumna from the Class of 2015. She worked in conjunction with Cristina Pla-Guzman, lead

teacher for Pace’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Theatre Program. Pla-Guzman came up with the idea to make the play interactive and the Pace Drama students practices parts of the script as they were finished. Junior Noah Marino, who played Ferris, the younger brother of the groom, explained that the 80’s theme came from the song “Jesse’s Girl” by Rick Springfield. Adelson was inspired to write a play after hearing the song and Pla-Guzman loved the idea of dating the play in a certain decade. The play was a wildly interactive experience for the audience. Instead of sitting in rows facing a stage, they sat at circular tables on the Spartan Center floor as actors performed in front of, and even, at their tables. 80s fashion was on display, 80s songs played over the loud speakers as the wedding and hilarious murder mystery unfolded. Audience members even stood for the bouquet toss and dance during the play’s wedding. Another unique aspect of the play was that the killer and motive were different for each performance, with the audience being able to look at the back of their programs to see a list of potential culprits. As it turns out, night 2’s killer, the videographer, was so well received. the crew decided to have him be the killer again on night 3. “The best part is that every role was written for specific actors,” said Marino. Adelson visited every other practice to meet with students, including the juniors and seniors whom she already knew from her time at Pace. Pace senior Alexandria Altidor, the stage manager and head of soundboard on the play, felt the play was unique from their previous productions, but great nonetheless. “At first, it was a little nerve wracking because we hadn’t done [an original play] before,” said

Altidor. “But during the summer, when the drama executive board met and read the first draft, we realized it was going to be good.” Pace’s Drama program had even more to celebrate the very next weekend, as they won 8 Superiors (First Place) and 8 Excellents (Second Place) at the International Thespian Society District Competitions held on November 11 and 12. They will be competing in the International Thespian Society’s State competition for the 10th consecutive year in March 2017.

Mater band wins State Marching Band championship By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Last year, Mater Academy’s marching band was runner-up in the state championships competition. This year, the Mighty Lions marched their way to first place. Mater Academy won the Florida Marching Band Class A State Championships last month at the Tropicana Dome in St. Petersburg. The Mighty Lions were among 19 bands chosen to compete in the semifinals and made the final cut of five bands. Mater Academy’s 70-member band comprised of band brass, percussions and color guards, earned the top championship, beating Northside Christian, Palm Beach Central, Jupiter and Park Vista. MATER ACADEMY’S Marching Mighty Lions band won the Florida Marching Band Class A State Championships in St. Petersburg.

“It was one of the best feelings ever,” said Mater’s band director Jason Cochrac. The top bands were judged in several categories such as individual field music, ensemble music, general effect music, color guards, drum major, percussion and ensemble visual. Cochrac said his band started preparing in June to play in local competitions to get a shot at returning to the state champions. They competed in regular competitions, district, regionals and advanced to the state finals. Cochrac said his band performed in the semifinals and the finals on the same night. “We made it to the finals, performed in an award ceremony, then hopped on the bus and headed to the Tropicana Dome for the finals,” he said. “It was nonstop.”

Mother of Our Redeemer launches year-long mission of stewardship Mother of Our Redeemer Catholic School students are continuing their Works of Mercy projects in stewardship, giving of their time, sharing their talents, learning selflessness, and showing God’s love for others. School principal Ana Casariego has incorporated the school year’s theme of “Empowering Each Child Through Excellence and Mercy.” Teachers guide themselves by this theme every day to instill the important lessons of mercy and stewardship within the students. Students have been involved in several “projects of love” so far this school year, and have many more to come. Hialeah M. Lakes Senior High holds assembly to honor Hispanic Heritage

R E A L E S TAT E CLASSIFIED

Hialeah Miami Lakes High School Choir and Jazz Band teamed up to commemorate Hispanic Heritage month in October. The two award winning groups performed songs with a Latin flair for students, faculty and staff in the school’s auditorium. The choir, led by director Shanita Hunt, featured songs such as “Vivir Mi Vida” by Marc Anthony. The Jazz Band took the stage and kept students clapping with their versions of several Latin Jazz favorites like “Mambo Hot” and “Sway.” HML also observed Hispanic Heritage Month with several activities including performances by the drama club for students and a display in the art gallery created by art students following the Latin theme.
