By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff After handing incumbent mayor Michael Pizzi a crushing defeat in last month’s run-off election, Manny Cid has settled in as the new mayor for Miami Lakes, and he has already begun the work that was part of his campaign promises that got him elected. In fact, the day after he was elected, Cid, 33, met with MDX to support the N.W. 67 and N.W. 87 avenue ramps on State Road 924 to alleviate traffic congestion. “We started from day one working right away a day after the election,” Cid said during an exclusive interview in his office at Town Hall. “Transportation is our top priority and we are hitting the ground running.” Cid, who has been pushing for an independent zip code for three years as a council member, said the postal code is on the brink of fruition. A bill for a zip code for Miami Lakes passed the U.S House of Representatives thanks to Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, and is headed for the U.S. Senate for a final vote in the near future. “Miami Lakes’ own zip code means lower auto insurance premiums,” he said. “ Cid said Florida’s Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera has offered to bring infrastructure dollars to Miami Lakes, and he’s planning to visit Tallahassee to furnish the town’s wish list to state lawmakers. “Money for infrastructure like

street repairs, storm water drainage and refurbishing the roads,” Cid said. “The focus is the Miami Lakes brand, bringing back what was a long time ago.” Cid, who co-owns an adult daycare, said Miami Lakes taking over the special taxing districts for the guard gates, lakes and street lighting from Miami-Dade is a big plus and would save town residents lots of money. “We’re the first city to take over those districts where thousands of residents live,” he said. “Public safety is a top priority for the town.” Cid said the ambiance at Town Hall and throughout is different following the election. “The town is more focused, no distractions and town staff is excited and working with lots of energy,” he said. “Our goal is to enhance the quality of living for residents like transportation, public safety and our parks. We’re not looking back, we’re moving forward.” The new mayor announced he will be having Saturday office hours for residents to visit with any concerns or problems they want to discuss. Another goal for Cid and council members is building a trust with residents. But a big concern is Pizzi’s lawsuit against the town, asking Miami Lakes to pay $2.5 million in attorney fees for his federal bribery case. Miami Lakes filed its own lawsuit against the insurance carrier

Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar SINCE 1990

MAYOR MANNY CID for refusing to cover the former mayor’s legal bill. Cid said he’s hoping the insurance company would put taxpayers at ease. “I’m hoping the insurance company can help us mitigate this, and not spend taxpayers’ money,” he said. Growing up in Miami Lakes, Cid never dreamed he’d be mayor. His father worked two jobs so his family could live in Miami Lakes, and Cid and his wife wanted to raise his two kids here as well. He’s the only Miami Lakes mayor who was raised in the town. “It’s more than a privilege, it’s an honor,” he said. “Being the first mayor raised in the town, it’s personal because the residents and future generation deserve the same.” Cid encourages family involvement. His family helped him campaign for months, and his kids were helping him with work at Town Hall. “Family is great, and as mayor, the most important job is being a father,” Cid said. “I have to balance because I need to be a good mayor and a good father.”

Final weekend for Main St. Players’ Spanish play

La Pasión Según Antígona Pérez is running its final weekend at The Main Street Playhouse on December 16-18.

The Miami Lakes community is invited to attend and enjoy the Main Street Playhouse’s first Spanish production, La Pasión Según Antígona Pérez. There is only one weekend left to catch the performance. The Main Street Playhouse is located at 6766 Main Street. The play is full of drama and political nuances. The cast has managed to stage the piece in a profile theater setting, reorganizing the conventional proscenium of the theatre and using the seating area as the dungeon of the imprisoned Antigona. The elevated stage is the palace of the dictator Generalísimo Creón Molina. In Antígona Pérez, the audience sees a totalitarian government that manipulates the lives of its inhabitants and imposes on them a fear that controls their actions inadvertently. Only Antígona is aware of this fear and has the courage to face it. In the piece, the audience will encounter a chorus of journalists who recount the events of the republic and incite attenders to question how they receive and process information from the media. The theater has always served as a healthy place for discussion of social problems. Director Isaac Polanco expressed that with this production, and given the current political changes, he is inviting audiences to open up a discussion where fear does not control our lives; a space where the feeling of loyalty, love of Antigona remains alive but not where martyrs are created and freedom and civil

rights are questioned. He feels honored to return to Main Street to direct the theater’s first Spanish production, as the theatre group continues to produce work in line with their own mission of bringing bold, innovative and relevant theater to a multicultural audience. The cast includes Antígona by Anne Garcia, Aurora by Adela Romero, Creón Molína by Alejandro Milían, Pilar by Salomé Muriel, Monsenor Escudero by

Amarú Pereyra, Irene Journalist 5 by Carmen Albernas, Journalist 1 by Camila Rodriguez, Journalist 2 by Rosalyn Tavarez, Journalist 3 by Henri Sosa, and Journalist 4 by Leopoldo Anzola. Remaining performance dates are December 16 - 18, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $20, and may either be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to showtime, or online at www.mainstretplayers.com.

Young Miami Lakes artists invited to enter 4th Annual Main Street Banner Contest The Graham Companies is inviting the children of Miami Lakes, as well as students from area schools, to participate in the 4th Annual Main Street Banner art contest where winners’ artwork will be showcased along Main Street on the light pole banners. This year’s theme is Miami Lakes Inspires Me. Perhaps it causes the artist to be athletic or enjoy the outdoors because of the parks; possibly Miami Lakes has instilled a love for animals or a desire to give back through community service. The banner committee wants to hear from the youth in the community. Submit a piece of artwork that shows how the artist is inspired by Miami Lakes. The contest is open to all children who live in Miami Lakes, or

attend a Miami Lakes public school (Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Bob Graham Education Center, Miami Lakes Middle School, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School, Barbara Goleman Senior High School, Miami Lakes Educational Center), or any Miami Lakes private school. Artwork is to be submitted for judging on or by January 20. Winners will be notified the week of February 6 and will be printed in the February 17 issue of The Miami Laker. Artwork will be printed on banners which will be hung along Main Street and be on display through June 2017. Entry form and flyer for the contest can be found online at www.miamilakes.com under the news tab.

Summary of Town Council actions taken Dec. 6 At the December 6 Town Council meeting, lawmakers gave their final approval for an ordinance that now allows a developer to pull a building permit for a project before the final plat is recorded by Miami-Dade County. Mayor Manny Cid cast the only no vote. The proposed legislation would expedite a developer’s building project and simultaneously help with additional tax revenue for the

town. Under the current code, a developer had to wait about a year to record a final plat by the county’s Clerk of the Court before commencing construction. Developers must provide Miami Lakes proof that their cadastral maps were on record in order to pull a building permit following approval first by the town and then Miami-Dade County. Recording a final plat can take

months or even a year, town officials indicated. Councilmember Tony Lama’s proposal would eliminate the recording requirement and allow a developer to build his project with certain conditions. The county has a similar code that Miami Lakes developers used before incorporation in 2000, but the town phased it out when creating its own land development code. In other Town Council News: • Tony Lama was elected the town’s new vice mayor on a 6-1 vote. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez nominated himself, while his colleagues chose Lama. • Lawmakers approved a resolution of a preliminary plat for the Bob Graham Building on vacant land located on the west side of Commerce Way and south of Governor’s Boulevard. The land is 14.62 acres with 1.23 of submerged land currently zoned as IU-C. The office building would be the fourth in the Graham Companies’ Governor’s Square development within Miami Lakes Business Park West. • Council members approved a preliminary plat for the Governors Square Senior Community west of Commerce Way and the intersection of N.W. 146 Street. The Graham Companies’ proposal is to build 220 multifamily apartment units for senior citizens including an 8,000 square-foot private recreation building, and an assisted living facility. • Council members approved a

resolution for a preliminary plat to replat portions of two existing tracts and create a new plat with one tract of land proposed by the Graham Companies. The firm proposes to build 73,125 square feet of warehouse space and 10,000 square feet of office space on the resulting replat. • Lawmakers approved a resolution for a preliminary plat for industrial and office buildings located on the southwest corner of Commerce Way and N.W. 82 Avenue. The Graham Companies’ proposal is to construct a onestory, 36,720 square foot warehouse/office building, plus a onestory, 38,700 square foot warehouse/office building and associated improvements. • Lawmakers awarded a contract for independent auditing services to Alberni Caballero and Fierman for one year and will reevaluate its services to determine if the town wants to resume the partnership. • Council members approved a resolution to award a contract for lobbying services to Southern Strategy Group for $150,000. The award amount consists of the firm’s proposed amount of $48,000 per year, for a total of $144,000 for the initial three year term, plus $2,000 per year for additional services that may be required during the duration of the contract. • Lawmakers approved a resolution for the town manager to execute a grant agreement with the South Florida Water Management

District for drainage improvements to Lake Sarah for $125,000. • Council members approved a public art concept which was created by artist Hans Feyerabend and recommended by the Professional Advisory Committee for the Miami Lakes Youth Center “The Spot,” and authorized the town manager to form an agreement with Hans Feyerabend for the design and construction of the artwork in an amount not to exceed $11,900. • Lawmakers approved Mayor Manny Cid’s recommendation to waive permit and park rental fees for Cheese-A-Palooza, an Y-100sponsored event. The fees total about $500. Radio personality Nick Pena, a Miami Lakes resident, will host the event and portion of the ticket sales will go to No Kid Hungry Florida. • Council members approved Cid’s proposal to direct town staff to engage with HOA’s to determine if they want to participate in the new special taxing districts pursuant to the new county charter amendments. Cid said the town taking over the special taxing districts for lakes maintenance and street lights are a big plus to Miami Lakes and will save taxpayer’s some money. The services were previously managed by Miami-Dade • The January 3 council meeting has been rescheduled to January 17, giving town staff more time to prepare an agenda following the busy holiday season.

Dade Christian girl’s volleyball team wins Class 3A state championship By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Last year’s Dade Christian girl’s volleyball team fell short of their goal of winning the state title. This year, the Crusaders made sure the championship trophy came home. In dominating fashion, Dade Christian defeated Liberty Baptist in straight sets, 25-2, 25-7, to capture the Class 3A state championship in Ft. Pierce. It’s the first state title for the school’s volleyball team. Led by Katherine Kemp, Lily Sierra, Samantha Dorta, Elizabeth “Lulu” Maldonado, Gabriella Gonzalez and Mallory Carrasco, the Crusaders cruised through the regular season and won the district championship. They dominated the regionals

and went undefeated in the state tournament to capture the championship trophy. “It felt surreal,” said Maldonado, the team’s captain. “It was a dream and part of reality.” The volleyball team was seeking redemption from last year, when the Crusaders won the district championship but lost in the regionals. Carrasco said her team played on a level that they can beat any team that stood in their way. “We went with the mindset we’re going to beat other teams no matter how good they were,” she said. “The team has good chemistry between the girls and working very hard because we all wanted to win.” Crusaders’ head coach Juan Castillo said the experience was

surreal but he wasn’t surprised they won since they worked hard in practice. “To believe in them and believe in the hard work they put in all season was amazing,” he said. “They applied everything they learned in practice and the outcome was surreal.”

Miami Lakes resident pens wishes for thinking of others this Christmas By Ricky Ali Special to The Miami Laker Christmas time again! Remember when you were a child, the wonderful anticipation of Christmas morning, the excitement of running to the Christmas tree to open your presents? What a feeling of joy and happiness. Even as an adult you get that same feeling, remarkable how that joy is everlasting throughout your lifetime. Is joy during Christmas about giving or receiving? Has the

essence of Christmas has been lost through its commercialized business emphasis? Today all I hear about is what retailers think, their sales forecast, and what new products and services manufacturers are rolling out for consumers at Christmastime, and most of all how much money businesses are going to make above last year. This Christmas, let’s think about those really in need, those children who will not have a tree, who will not get a present, who may not even have a roof over

their heads, and those who may be cold Christmas night and hungry Christmas morning. God gave us a beautiful present Christmas morning, his only son, and gave us his only son once again, by giving his son’s life to save us. Through his son, he again “gave,” he gave us access to him through prayer, he also gave us everlasting life and most of all the greatest gift of all, he forgave us our sins, cleansed us and gave us an opportunity to have a clear pathway to Heaven with him. To me this is the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas is about giving of your heart to others. God gave each of us the precious gift of life. He has planned our lives, he has also given us other specific gifts, some of us can teach, speak, write, some are great in business and have the opportunity to enable others to work and live a good life. Some have excess to give back, some of us are kind, thoughtful, caring, some of us have the gift of empathy and listening. Can we live every day throughout the year like Christmas day? Is this the true meaning of Christmas, always giving and helping those in need? I don’t expect to live a perfect life, but this Christmas I can only ask you to look at your life, look at your unique gifts, and with humility and his spirit that is within all of us, let His light shine in you. Christmas is about accepting and receiving Christ into our lives. He will bless your life with gifts beyond any treasure of this earth. Have faith, hope, trust and love. Have a blessed, safe and peaceful Christmas.

St. Thomas University marks 70 years Town Council honors BGEC’s On December 10, St. Thomas University celebrated its 70th anniversary, an event that sparked memories of the college that started in Cuba. STU, originally founded in 1946 as the Universidad de Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Havana, Cuba, by American Augustinian priests from Philadelphia, was ordered to shut down in 1961 by

Fidel Castro. But many of its administrators, faculty and students were determined to continue their education, and came to Miami to start a new Catholic men’s college. It was initially called Biscayne College and became St. Thomas University in 1984. Students who persevered through the closing of the univer-

sity in Cuba and fled to the United States to complete their degrees also attended the anniversary celebration. St. Thomas University was the practice facility for the Miami Dolphins for many years before the team moved to Southeastern Nova University.

THE ROBOTICS STEM ACADEMY from Bob Graham Education Center participated in the VEX IQ Challenge State Qualifier Competition at WR Thomas Middle School on Saturday, December 3. Team Wall-e and Team Robotic Squad qualified to compete in the Middle School VEX IQ State competition in Tampa. Team Wall-e won the Best Design Award and Team Robotic Squad won the Best STEM Research Project Award. The school congratulated Marilyn Dieppa, Science Department chair and Team Leader for her hard work, dedication and commitment, and the talented group of scholars who worked relentlessly to bring these accolades to the school.

Pace High inducts 51 students into National Honor Society chapter By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker A total of 51 students from Pace High School were inducted into the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) at a special ceremony held inside the Spartan Center on December 1. Every year, exceptional Pace students are invited into NHS by a faculty council and inducted in a ceremony that has become a December tradition. Students are invited by showcasing excellence

in the foundations of the National Honor Society: Scholarship, service, leadership, and character. This year, 26 sophomores, 19 juniors, and six seniors were officially welcomed into the organization. They were accompanied to the induction ceremony by their family, friends, and NHS peers. Dean of Faculty Lilian Dubon and NHS adviser Luis Mayo opened the ceremony by congratulating the inductees on their accomplishments.

Following this, the NHS student executive board officers spoke about the foundations of NHS and the inductees read the NHS pledge together. The inductees were then each called up to the stage to be given their certificates and light their individual ceremonial candles. Once all the inductees were recognized, the evening concluded with dinner and dessert for all in attendance.

FIFTY ONE STUDENTS from Monsignor Edward Pace High School were inducted into the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society at a special ceremony held inside the Spartan Center on December 1.

Historical importance of the Chanukah Menorah Lighting By Weiss and Schneerson Chabad of Miami Lakes Dear friends, please join us in a public menorah lighting ceremony and celebration on December 28 at 7:30 p.m. in front of Town Hall in Miami Lakes. Let’s illuminate the world together. As a message relevant for today I have decided to share a letter based on the words of my mentor and leader, the Lubvitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson of Blessed Memory. This letter was written to all Participants in the Public Lighting of the Chanukah Menorah in the USA and is so relevant even 35 years later. “Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, recalls the victory – more than 2100 years ago – of a militarily weak but spiritually strong Jewish people over the mighty forces of a ruthless enemy that had overrun the Holy Land and threatened to engulf the land and its people in darkness. “The miraculous victory – culminating with the dedication of the Sanctuary in Jerusalem and the rekindling of the Menorah which had been desecrated and extinguished by the enemy – has been celebrated annually ever since during these eight days of Chanukah, especially by lighting the Chanukah Menorah, also as a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness. “It is a timely and reassuring message, for the forces of darkness are ever present. Moreover, the danger does not come exclusively from outside; it often lurks close to home, in the form of insidious erosion of time-honored values and principles that are at the foundation of any decent human society. Needless to say, darkness is not chased away by brooms and sticks, but by illumination. Our sages said, ‘A little

RABBI MENDEL WEISS light expels a lot of darkness.’ “The Chanukah Lights remind us in a most obvious way that illumination begins at home, within oneself and one’s family, by increasing and intensifying the light of Goodness and Kindness and Torah and Mitzvot, in the everyday experience, even as the Chanukah Lights are kindled in growing numbers from day to day. Indeed, the Chanukah Lights are expressly meant to illuminate the ‘outside,’ symbolically alluding to the duty to bring light also to those who, for one reason or another, still walk in darkness. “What is true of the individual is true of a nation, especially this great United States, united under God, and generously blessed by God with material as well as spiritual riches. It is surely the duty and privilege of this Nation to promote all the forces of light both at home and abroad, and in a steadily growing measure. “Let us pray that the message of the Chanukah Lights will illuminate the everyday life of everyone personally, and of the society at large, illuminating ones life both materially and spiritually.” Happy Chanukah. With blessings, Rabbi M. Schneerson

Holiday message from Miami One of most cherished times of the year Lakes Congregational Church By Rev. Jose Alvarez world! By Rev. Dianne Hudder Miami Lakes Congregational Church Miami Lakes Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 6701 Miami Lakeway South, sends holiday blessings to all who celebrate holy days during the month of December. We invite anyone and everyone to join us as we celebrate Christmas with a candlelight service December 24 at 7 p.m. and Christmas Day at our regular worship time of 10:30 a.m. Remember, “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, YOU are always welcome” at Miami Lakes Congregational Church. Warmest blessings of the season to all of you.

REV. DIANNE HUDDER

Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church Christmas is one of the most cherished times of the year! Throughout the world people anticipate its celebration with colorful festivities that take on varied expressions in different cultures. It is a time in which the beautiful sounds of carols soothe our ears and hearts. It is a time in which our eyes are mesmerized by delightful decorations and the gleam of twinkling lights. It is a time in which all kinds of gifts are generously and joyfully exchanged. It is a time of beauty, unity and hope. For Christians, the spirit of this time is particularly understandable since Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas message from Christ the Saviour Orthodox Cathedral By Rev. Fr. Joseph Lucas Christ the Saviour Orthodox Cathedral “O Christ our God, your Nativity has shone to the world the light of wisdom. For by it, those who worshiped the stars were taught by a star to adore you, the Sun of Righteousness; and to know you, the Morning Star on High. O Lord, glory to you.” (Orthodox Hymn of Christmas). This ancient song, traditionally chanted every Christmas at Orthodox Church services, leads us into a deep mystery. For the early Christians, the historical events surrounding the birth of Jesus revealed the truth concerning the cosmos. The astronomers of Persia (known as Magi) were looking to the night sky for signs. And it was precisely from that midnight clear that a star

ol cho S r e Aft e Car

appeared, beckoning them to Bethlehem. God's creation became their guide; but it also became their teacher. In a dark cave, three wise men discovered the source of all wisdom: The eternal Son of God who had become man. Greater than any created light, he is both the gentle “Morning Star on High” (Luke 1:78) and the brilliant “Sun of Righteousness” (Malachi 4:2). In the midst of the winter, when the days have grown short, the whole world is suddenly illuminated by Christ. God has become man so that we may share in this light, which is his peace and love. As we experience this blessed season, may we open our hearts to him, giving shelter to the babe in the depths of our soul so that the darkness is expelled. Christ is born, let us glorify him!

May the reality of Christmas therefore serve us well! As the light in the afternoon sky grows day by day beyond Christmas, may the light of our vision also grow so we may all the more cherish the beauty, unity and hope that is already ours and allow the spirit of this time to enhance it. To people of all creeds, countries and cultures here in our local community, may this Christmas be for you, your loved ones and us all a time of great light – a time to celebrate the blessings which are uniquely ours! REV. JOSE ALVAREZ Christians believe that Jesus, the Word through whom all good things were made, took on flesh and came into the world to reveal the fullness of beauty, unity and hope which is always in our midst, but which our eyes are often clouded from seeing. Jesus came to shed light on the goodness of our existence. Consequently, Jesus is regarded as the light of the

By Pastor Al Pino, Palm Vista Community Church There is a longing deep inside every man and woman to recapture the glory that seems to escape us in this sad and fallen world of sickness, corruption, betrayal, addiction, harsh bosses and broken relationships. Perhaps like no other holiday Christmas captures this longing for glory. This is the time of year when we express our longing for that glory in parties and family gatherings where presents are given and friends and families come together to eat and drink; enjoying warm feelings and fond memories. It is a time of year when we try to be kind to one another, when warring nations call Christmas truces and we wish for a moment of good will and peace to all. We express this longing in the songs we sing, the good feelings we enjoy if only for a day or two and the holiday movies we watch with heart-warming endings like “It’s A Wonderful Life.” We flock to Disney with its marvelous

Christmas lights and fairy-tale endings. These all express our longing for glory and they are to be sure a small foretaste of the true, eternal glory that arrived with Christ’s first advent and will be consummated for all eternity at his second advent. But true eternal glory is only possible in Christ Jesus. Only Christ fulfills our longing for glory because only Christ can restore the glory we lost. We lost the glory of God in the Garden of Eden. That’s right, we lost the glory of God in paradise. The bible teaches us that God intended us for glory and that glory was experienced by Adam and Eve in the garden where they ruled over God’s creation under God’s kind and good rule. But Adam and Eve decided to go their own way, they rebelled against God and lost the glory of God and received the just punishment for their rebellion, death. And ever since then, we have been laboring under the curse of death, longing for the glory and life of

PASTOR AL PINO God. Here is the good news; God promised Adam and Eve that He would one day restore that glory through a Savior who would crush the head of evil. And that Savior is none other than Jesus Christ whose advent or coming we celebrate this Christmas season. Friend, may God reveal to you the true meaning and significance of Jesus’ first advent in gaining back the glory we lost and long for by suffering and dying on the cross for the sins of His people, rising from the dead for the forgiveness of those sins and ascending into heaven promising to share His glory with His people at His second advent. We invite you to come hear more about this glory that we lost and long for at our Christmas service on Friday night December 23, 7:30 p.m. at the Miami Lakes Middle School Auditorium.

Christmas wishes from Church of the Epiphany By Rev. John Stanton Church of the Epiphany Christmas tells us that God is with us. It may be hard to remember in Florida as we decorate our palm trees, but the green of the Christmas trees celebrates life in the bitter cold of winter and the Christmas lights celebrate the presence of God in our lives. It is a deep truth, not only for Christians, but for all people. God is with us in all we are and all that we do. We can count on it because new life came into the world with the birth of Jesus. It’s yours and it’s mine. Merry Christmas. Let’s celebrate!
