Bill Higgs retires after 35 year career as Athletic Club director

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Bill Higgs stands at about six feet with impeccable posture as he walks around Shula’s Athletic Club by day as director and by night as member. He blends in with the others, those cycling next him none the wiser that he’s led and transformed the athletic club for over 35 years. With a duffel bag and mountain bike in his car, he ventures out to Oletta State Park during the week after work to bike through the dirt slopes, his new favorite pastime. The Bill Higgs that has officially retired still bears a striking resemblance to the athletic explorer he was in his 20’s when he backpacked through Grand Teton, the Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone. It was a winding road that lead him to a life devoted to fitness and at the BILL HIGGS ends 35 years as director of the highly successful Shula’s Athletic Club. (Please see Page 2)

Town of Miami Lakes lawmakers and residents will discuss the budget for next year at a workshop, which is scheduled for Thursday, August 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. The estimated $16.5 million spending plan, at the same millage rate of 2.335 for property taxes, allows Miami Lakes to cover the rising costs for police services and health care insurance for town employees. Police service will cost Miami Lakes $8.4 million for 20172018, which constitutes 52 percent of the town’s budget. Albeit a challenge, the town’s budget also offers to pay for $60,000 in tree trimming services as part of the town’s Tree Management Plan; $362,000 for beautification projects and parks improvements; $158,300 for employee retention and training; $134,000 for miscellaneous projects; and $121,400 in reserves. For the town’s committees’ budgets, Miami Lakes is proposing to increase their funding following their requests during a workshop in July.

Their total budgets were set for a total of $227,850, an increase of $16,100. Some services that may go unfunded next year include the West Lakes Neighborhood Reforestation Program ($100,000); Healthy Miami Lakes Master Plan ($25,000); Smart Cities Strategic Road Map ($25,000); and facilities renewal and replacement plan ($125,000). For basic legal services and the former mayor’s lawsuit, which has been dragging on for three years, the town budgeted $230,000 for town attorney services, and will carry over $1.40 million for litigation fees and $624,000 in reserves. In addition, Miami Lakes, by law, must reserve 10 percent of the budget ($570,000) for emergencies. The estimated roll value from Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser reflects a gross taxable value of $3 billion, an increase of $13 million in new construction and improvements.

The Town announced winners of the “Capture a Miami Lakes Moment” photo contest. Jae Kim was the first place winner with a beautiful photo of Picnic Park West. Monique Metzcus placed second with a photo of clouds flying over Lake Katharine. Juan Carlos Garcia’s photo received third place honors for his photo of the beautifully serene Madden’s Hammock. Honorable Mention honors were received by Juan Espejo

for his photo of the sun setting over Lake Glenn Ellen, and Michael Huffaker for his photo of sunset over Lake Patricia. Selecting winners was difficult with submitted photos ranging from beautiful landscape shots, picturesque Miami Lakes landmarks, and even the Town’s trademark cows. The winning photos will be published on the Town’s website, www.miamilakes-fl.gov, in social media pages, and used in MIAMI LAKES RESIDENT Jae Kim won first place in the Town’s “Capture a Miami the Town’s marketing materials. It was a different time, though, right at the cusp of a shift in mentality and media in America, where a young, impressionable Higgs sat glued to his TV watching Jack Lalane, the “Godfather of Fitness.” Lalane promoted healthy living and once beat a 21-year old Arnold Schwarzenegger in a contest at the age of 54. What Higgs saw stuck with him and combined with his passion for sports, including baseball, basketball, football, and surfing, he lead an active childhood and young adulthood. During his summers he took scenic routes to California’s beaches for surfing and ended up enrolling at the University of Florida for his bachelors degree in Parks and Recreation Administration where he graduated with honors. Thereafter he attended Indiana University Bloomington for a top notch program and earned his mas-

ter’s degree in Parks and Recreation Administration. After graduation the waves beckoned and he decided to move to California. After several unsuccessful months in the state he came back home, tail between his legs, the lowest he’d ever felt. It was this moment that cemented the value of fitness for him. Higgs would send out resumes and then he would hit the gym — hard. He found control over his physical and mental growth when he couldn’t control much else and before long the call came from the City of Hialeah Parks and Recreation. Higgs was a hop, skip and a jump away from the dream job he would eventually retire from, though he didn’t know it yet. After accepting a position as Assistant Director for Shula’s Athletic Club he got to work. When the club opened in 1982 it was simply 9 large racquetball courts, and nothing else. Less of a gym, and more of a social club – a restaurant and bar was onsite. Over the 80’s changes were

made and by the end of the 90’s the courts were gone, a second story had been built, and Higgs, now Director, introduced children’s sports programs, an innovative move at the time. The club transformed from social club to family friendly fitness. “I really do see fitness as preventative medicine,” said Higgs. “So the next logical step was to actually partner with medical facilities which is when we introduced the physical therapy area within the gym.” The last radical shift Higgs put into action a handful of years ago was the introduction of the Thrive program, a licensed program Higgs researched and approved where exercises are customized to fit the gym goers abilities and needs, while still harboring a philosophy that runs congruent through all the trainers’ approaches. “I wanted to make sure that everyone who came here for training knew what they were getting and that it wouldn’t change on them if they were partnered with a different trainer for the day.” “We should be so lucky to find our passions,” said Higgs. “I’m incredibly lucky that I dropped into mine 35 years ago.” Along with stumbling onto his dream job he also met his future wife, Linda Higgs, at the gym. Today they have two children, Bradley, 19, and Jenna, 17. Higgs says having children later in life worked out for him, if the strict nutrition and exercise regimen he sticks to didn’t keep him young already, his children definitely do.

Graham meets with Civic Engagement students THE MIAMI LAKER

By Ramiro Inguanzo Special to The Miami Laker Students from the Civic Engagement Academy (CEA) at Bob Graham Education Center (BGEC) spent the summer reading and meeting in small groups to prepare for the upcoming school year. This included reading Senator Bob Graham's most recent book - “America, The Owner's Manual: How To Fight City Hall And Win.” On August 3, the CEA students and their teachers met at Town Hall to check in on the work they had done over the summer. As part of that meeting, the Bobcat Law Society Parent Booster Club – which raises funds and provides support to the teachers and students in the CEA, coordinated a panel discussion with town officials to discuss portions of the Senator's book with the students. In his book, Graham advocates for a shift in civic education from a lecture-based approach that focuses on governmental structure and process to a dynamic experience that emphasizes personal engagement. The CEA program has successfully accomplished this goal of civic engagement and with the panel made up of town officials sought to further

expose the students to their government by having them hear directly from their elected officials. The panel included: Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez, Councilmembers Tim Daubert and Luis Collazo, newly appointed Councilmember Marilyn Ruano, and was moderated by the Bobcat Law Society president Ramiro Inguanzo. When Graham heard about the meeting the students were having with their local elected officials, he asked if he could come by and observe as he obviously takes great joy in seeing civic education taught in an interactive manner. When he arrived after hearing about the meeting, he entered the Council Chambers and surprised students and parents. “Graham was so gracious with his time, and to surprise us all with his attendance provided an incredible opportunity for our students to hear directly from not only the namesake of their school, but also from the author of the book they have been reading" said Jackeline Hernandez, one of the teachers in the CEA. Graham was invited to address the students and then joined the elected officials on

for students to personally connect with their government and make it a dynamic experience,” said Inguanzo. In what was her first official act, Ruano, who also happens to be the immediate past president of the Bobcat Law Society, congratulated the students and also challenged them to continue working hard and stay connected and engaged with their government. “It was such a treat to make my councilwoman debut with my CEA family. Most recently, students participated in the 2017 Project Citizen National Showcase in California in late July. AUGUST 18, 2017

THE MIAMI LAKER

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis paid a visit to Miami Lakes as part of the state’s plan to study the rock miner’s blasting operations, which residents claim cause damages to their residential properties. The Fire Marshall Office, which falls under the CFO, regulates and minors the blasting by the rock mining industry. The state legislature allocated $325,000 for the study to determine if the regulations need to protect properties and homes. State Representatives Manny Diaz Jr., and Jose Olivia and State Senator Rene Garcia secured the funding to study blasting during the 2017 Legislative Session. “The impacts of rock mining blasting on nearby structures is a growing concern among residents in Northwest Miami-Dade County, said Patronis. “As a result of Representative FLORIDA CFO Jimmy Patronis, State Representative Manny Diaz Jr., Miami Diaz and Senator Garcia’s leadLakes Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmember Frank Mingo tour Miami Lakes as ership, and the support of part of the state’s study of blasting operations damages. Governor Scott and the

Legislature, funding has been made available to conduct a thorough study into the effects of rock mine blasting. I look forward to joining all parties involved and working towards a well-researched, amicable solution to this matter. Said Diaz: “I want to thank our new CFO Jimmy Patronis for making time to learn about blasting and work on a thorough study. We will continue to work together for what’s best for our homes and community. Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid said, “CFO Patronis’ visit to Northwest Miami-Dade is yet another positive step in the process to mitigate the impact of rock mining. The CFO is a friend and a great Floridian who has the people’s best interest of the heart. Councilmember Frank Mingo said. “The CFO wasted no time to dive into this issue and partner with us to continue to find solutions for Miami Lakes and our neighbors.

Iris Berges named CEO at Larkin Palm Springs THE MIAMI LAKER

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff After the acquisition of Palm Springs General Hospital in February 2016, longtime Miami Lakes resident Iris Berges assumed the role of CEO at the new Larkin Palm Springs Campus, the same location where she first began her career. As a junior in St. Brendan High School, Berges tried her hand at a pharmaceutical job at the former Palm Springs General Hospital and though she learned pharmacy work wasn’t for her, it was her first step into the health and medical field. She has since worked in the field, following earning a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and Nutrition from Florida International University and later a master’s degree in Business Administration at Nova Southeastern University. “I always knew I wanted to be in a leadership role,” said Berges. “After working at the hospital while in high school I learned that it was preventative care that really interested me. Berges learned the intricacies of hospital administration from her years of experience in Larkin while moving up the ranks, first as a Food and Nutrition Director, then a Director of Risk Management and Compliance Officer. She eventually earned her spot as Vice President of Compliance and Support in 2012 and was promoted to CEO of Larkin’s Behavioral Health

Services location. The transition into CEO at the Palm Springs campus was a natural one and she has big plans for the 247-bed, 15-acre campus. “I want to change the culture of the hospital,” she said. “I don’t want to hear ‘the cafeteria has great food’ I want to hear the hospital has great care. I want this to be the first choice location for patients.” Berges is in the middle of affecting that culture by continuing to add programs, especially programs that fit with the demographics of the patients, like neurosurgery, vascular surgery, opthalmology, allergy and immunology, and more. Berges has also added staff, especially in the emergency room and triage, so there are fewer transfers to get patients the care they require. The 23bed emergency room offers zero wait time. Larkin has also added a medical office building to house primary care physicians and specialists such as dermatologists, internists, and more. The Palm Springs Campus is already a teaching hospital, as are all Larkin hospitals. “We are proving ourselves,” said Berges. “We are bringing awareness and events for the city of Hialeah and others so patients know that we are here and ready to help.” As part of her campaign to improve quality, culture and reputation at the Larkin Palm

Springs Campus, Berges and her staff are leading intermittent health fairs, free and open to the community. The last health fair, held in June 2017, had local residents stopping by to get their blood pressure checked at one of the many health check stations set up. She is also pushing initiatives to improve bedside manner, adhering to new regulations, standardized practices, and more. MTPO Governing Board approves grants for two priority projects The Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO) Governing Board recently approved the list of 2017 Transportation Alternatives Program priority projects which includes two submitted by the Town of Miami Lakes. The N.W. 59 Avenue project calls for the creation of sidewalks, safe pedestrian crossings, bicycle lanes, pedestrian scaled lighting, and accessible pedestrian signals from N.W. 154 Street to N.W. 167 Street. When completed, the project would provide access to public transportation and connect residents to the adjacent commer-

cial and business centers, as well as Miami Lakes Educational Center. The N.W. 79 Court project includes the construction of new sidewalks, high emphasis crosswalks, wayfinding signage, and bike lanes along Oak Lane/Commerce Way in Miami La kes Business Park West. The project will enhance mobility options and transportation infrastructure for the senior population in the planned Senior Village, the business community, neighboring commercial areas, and students of the new Ana G. Mendez University South Florida cam-

pus. The approved grants were for $1 million each and both projects further strategies adopted in the Town’s Transportation Master Plan; Greenways and Trails Master Plan; and the upcoming Complete Streets Implementation Plan, and “reclaim” these streets for pedestrians and bicyclists by using a “Complete Streets” approach, while balancing the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. For more information about additional grants awarded to the Town, visit www.miamilakesfl.gov/grants.

Miami Lakes is one of the first municipalities in South Florida to convert all Town-owned streetlights to LED. The project, part of the Town’s strategic initiatives, will replace approximately 900 streetlights throughout Miami Lakes, including standard streetlights (called “cobra heads”) and decorative streetlights. The LED retrofit project supports two goals in the Town’s 10-year strategic plan – achieve universal environmental sus-

Residents invited to join Complete Streets Design Workshop set for Sept. 18 at Mary Collins Com. Ctr. Residents who are interested in helping to improve Miami Lakes’ road infrastructure are invited to join the town’s Transportation Department for a Complete Streets Design Workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 18, at Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. Complete Streets Initiatives include infrastructure enhancements that implement additional pedestrian and bike improvements to give all users a greater share of the right-of-way. Specific improvements can vary from pavement markings to new physical barriers built between travel lanes and bike pedestrian pathways. Ultimately, the improvements are done to increase safety while not compromising traffic flow. The recommendations were developed in coordination with the Miami-Dade County Com-

plete Streets Design Guidelines Program. The proposed design guidelines are customized to fit the context of the identified Miami Lakes street typology and are focused on providing multimodal roadway improvements that take into consideration all users. During the workshop, Town staff will provide an overview of Complete Streets components, present existing conditions of the roadway characteristics within the Town, and present examples of concepts for select corridors. Residents are encouraged to join the workshop and help improve Miami Lakes’ streets to accommodate all users – pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders and motorists. For information on the Town’s planned transportation improvements, visit www.miami-lakesfl.gov/mobility.

THE MIAMI LAKER

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff There’s just something magical about Miami Lakes according to Ricardo Humaran, who shared his first date and proposed to his now-wife Lilibet Artola-Humaran on Main Street. Whatever it is that pulls Humaran in to the quaint town of Miami Lakes, it made him decide to open his own dental office here at 15495 Eagle Nest Lane, Suite 200. Arriving from Cuba as a 12year-old, Humaran followed in his mother’s footsteps, Norma Sixto, who was a dentist in Cuba and became a dental hygienist in the states. Humaran attended Florida International University to earn his undergraduate degree in biology and then attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is part of the American Dental Association, Florida RICARDO HUMARAN, along with his mother Norma Dental Association, South Sixto, have opened a new dental office in Miami Florida Dental Association and he is board certified with the Lakes.

Northeastern Regional Board. Humaran’s mother joined him in his new business venture and together they hope to offer patients a harbor from the fear of visiting the dentist. “I know people are afraid to visit the dentist,” said Humaran. “It’s like I’m the villain! But really the bottom line is patients come to see me because they are in pain and my goal is to have them go home pain-free and healthy. We offer our services to improve your health.” Humaran places emphasis on bedside manner and even down to the timbre of his voice when conversing with patients, to make sure he is making them feel at ease and at home while under his care. “I want everyone to feel as comfortable as possible, I know it seems silly to even consider the tone of my voice but it truly works. I want to make this a comfortable place to build relationships. This is more than a business to me.” Services offered include, but are not limited to, dental implants, root canal, crowns, bridges, dentures, partial dentures, fillings, veneers, cosmetic dentistry, and oral surgery extraction. Those interested in visiting the dental office of Ricardo J. Humaran can call 305-456-1554 to make an appointment. Walkins are welcome.

Doghouse Miami opens new site at the Royal Oaks Shopping Plaza PAGE 10

AUGUST 18, 2017

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Jaqueline Lopez along with her sons, David and Deivis Gonzalez, opened the newest spot for man’s best friend in Miami Lakes: Doghouse Miami. The dog care, boarding and training facility opened on August 3 at 15512 N.W. 77 Court with Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmembers Luis Collazo and Marilyn Ruano to help cut the ribbon at the Royal Oaks Plaza location. The owners settled on Miami Lakes for the opening of their first location for Doghouse Miami to fill the need they saw for a dog day care and boarding facility. Doghouse Miami is a fullservice 1800 sq. ft dog spot that offers doggy daycare, merchandise, grooming, training and boa rding. Though there are many kennels, the majority of the time is spent in the main playground. The five-member staff all have grooming and training certifications and the facility has a separate area to house aggressive dogs or small dogs that may be too small to share the same area with larger dogs.

M-D Ethics Commission hosts Town Hall for residents on September 13 In an effort to encourage Miami-Dade residents to become watchdogs of their local governments, the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust is hosting a town hall meeting in Miami Lakes, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 13, at 6601 Main Street. A group of Miami Lakes residents requested the meeting, where Ethics and Public Trust staff will be on hand to discuss citizens’ rights and obligations to an ethical municipal government. The commission was formed in 1998 to keep government officials in line and honor the conflict of interest and code of ethics ordinance while coducting city business with elected officials, lobbyists, advisory boards and vendors. The commission will also discuss its work and offer options on filing complaints if residents believe government officials are not honoring the code of ethics ordinance. “The more information an individual gives us that’s considered bad behavior, it’s very helpful to our investigators,” said Rhonda Victor Sibilia,

communications director for Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust. Sibilia said residents staying on top of their governments is a big assist to the commission since it has jurisdiction over 34 Miami-Dade cities. “We need for them to keep their eyes out,” she said. Sibilia said the town hall meeting is open to all MiamiDade residents. She said to report bad conduct by government officials, call the commission’s hotline at 786-314-9560, email at ethics@miamidadegov or file a formal complaint.

Jason Smith, 7, qualifies for Jr. Olympics with eyes set on Mars By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Seven-year-old Jason Smith asked his father what the rings of Saturn are made of. It was a question whose answer led to only more questions that had to be typed into Google. Jason Smith Sr. readily admits his son’s questions often drive him to research. It’s a typical weekday night in the Smith home. Smith stands out amongst his classmates at Dade Christian School not only because he’s the tallest but because every day since pre-kindergarten he dons a bow tie as part of his personal uniform. The idea came to him after watching his father’s deft fingers pull a tie into a windsor knot in the mornings before jetting off to work. He wanted to be like dad, and he is like dad, and mom, in more ways than one. The curiosity and precociousness Smith shows in his personality extends to his academics and his athletics. Earning straight-A’s his entire time in school, and reading at several grade levels above his own would be enough to merit praise, but it’s not Smith’s style to compartmentalize his intense drive for success to only one facet of his young life. Smith has been officially training for the junior olympics under the direction of Coach Doreen Small Mercer since the age of four. Though he participates in the 400 meter long jump and mini/turbo javelin throw, his favorite event is the

JASON SMITH bites down on a medal pretending he’s an Olympian. 200 meter dash. He finishes 200 meters in 38 seconds and is trying to get down to 32 seconds. Every time he passes the finish line he whips his head back to check his time. His tenacity rivals that of those three and four times his age. After medals and recognitions in local races, Smith qualified for the junior olympic team in his region for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and subsequently qualified for the state and for the AAU Track and Field and Multi-Events mini/turbo javelin throw. He placed at number 17 in the state among thousands, and his parents had to remind him what an accomplishment it was when he fought back tears for not having broken the top three. Fighting a cold, and braving the 50 degree weather he is

unaccustomed to, Smith flew to Detroit for the AAU Junior Olympics in early August where he ranked at number 45 in the nation for the javelin throw, with his shortest recorded distance of 9.91 meters. He was disappointed but undeterred. “I’m coming back next year,” he told his parents. “I don’t know where he gets it,” said Smith’s mom, Shenika. “We encourage him and do our best to answer his questions. We limit his TV time and read with him, but that drive he has to be number one… that’s all him. We have to constantly remind him to see his successes not only his failures.” Smith sees dedication firsthand in his household, where he does homework alongside his parents. Shenika recently graduating with her second master’s degree, and Jason Sr. attending law school. Shenika carries a calendar with her of Smith’s schedule: piano lessons, football, basketball, track and field conditioning, and more. “We are very blessed that he wants to work hard whether it’s handwriting assignments or math,” said Jason Sr. “We remind him ‘I can do all things through —“ and Smith interjects and finishes his father’s thought “through Christ who strengthens me.” On his way to the 200 meter dash at the Olympics, Smith wants to become an astronaut. His lofty goals seem bewildering for someone who was born around the same time Toy Story 3 hit theatres. While watching TV one day he asked his mom if a black man has ever touched Mars. Surprised, she told him, no, not yet. He told her “then I want to be the first.”

Optimist players attend Softball Breakout Series Three Miami Lakes Optimist softball players were chosen to attend the MLB/USA Softball Breakthrough Series at the USA Pride Softball Complex in Oklahoma. Ashley Alfonso, Erika Castroman, and MeLanie Arauz were chosen from all over the U.S. to attend a five-day event with Jenny Finch and members of the USA Pride Team. MLB funded the event, which included air fare and other allpaid expenses to allow the girls to travel to Oklahoma. They also received cleats, backpacks and uniforms. While there, the girls got instructions from Finch and members of the team on drills and game fundamentals, as well as playing four games. They also were treated to the Softball Hall of Fame tour.

Hundreds of players were considered but only 60 were picked. The three girls represented Miami Lakes Optimist at the event. The girls have been with the club since they were eight years old. “I’ve had the privilege of coaching these girls during our recreation seasons and our travel All-Stars, Miami Lakes Optimist Heat,” said coach Alex Castroman. “They have all worked so hard year in and year out and have become extremely exceptional players and have been recognized as such by this honor they have earned. These girls stuck it out with Miami Lakes Optimist although having offers from other teams. They decided to be loyal to their home team and we are extremely proud of them.”

FIU standout Gabrielle Rains wins Bronze in discus at Pan-Am Championships

Florida International University track and field standout Gabrielle Rains took home the Bronze Medal in the discus at the Pan-Am U20 Track and Field Championships last month in Trujillo, Peru. Rains posted a throw of 53.06 meters that placed her on the medal stand. Her performance in Peru fell just short of breaking her Canadian U20 and FIU record of 53.10 meters that she set on March 18 at the Hurricane Invitational, a record that stood for more than 31 years. Her record-setting throw is currently tied for the 19th best U20 throw in the world this year, the second-best mark in Conference USA, and the 42nd best in NCAA Division I during the 2017 season. Rains, who will be a sophomore in the fall, has already had a successful summer. On July 6, she won the Canadian U20 Track and Field Championship discus title at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, Ontario. Rains set a new championships U20 record with her toss of 51.60m en route to the gold medal.

HML, American football coaches prep for season By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff For Tyronn Johnson, the entire spring was spent building what he called a nucleus as he’s entering his second season as Hialeah Miami Lakes head football coach. American head coach, Joe Morgan, was keeping his team intact to make a run at a sixth consecutive playoff berth and the Patriots’ fifth district championship in seven seasons. But a new state law just derailed both coaches’ plans. Now, student-athletes are taking advantage of the state statute, which allows them to transfer to top-ranked schools, where college scouts frequently offer players scholarships to attend big-time colleges. The law impacted American and Hialeah Miami Lakes football programs, as some of their Miami-Dade players are now on the rosters of storied highschool teams, and are now relying on inexperienced players to pick up the slack. Nonetheless, both coaches like their teams’ chances for the 2017 season. Johnson said his Trojans looked “good” during spring practice and their Jamboree game, a promising sign for the

upcoming regular season. But in June and July, three of his top players transferred to state champion Carol City, Northwestern, Norland and Central, winner of four straight state titles, and some of their teammates followed their lead. The depletion of his team left Johnson disheartened and forced him to rebuild his team a second time, as the Trojans open the regular season against Palmetto, on Saturday, August 26. “The law put us in a tough position,” Johnson said. “We have to take it one game at at time. We have to do our best with what we have.” Like Johnson, Morgan is entering his second year as the Patriots’ head coach, and his biggest challenge of convincing his players to stay put was to no avail. “They were worried about scouts coming to their games and earning scholarships,” Morgan said. “I told them it’s not where you are, it’s how well you are playing. They will come and scout you on how well your perform on the football field and classroom.” He may get to see some of his former players when the Patriots kick-off the regular sea-

son against storied program Northwestern on Friday, August 25, and their last game of the season against Carol City in November. But for his players this season, Morgan is encouraging them to overcome their intimidation of the legacies of Northwestern and Carol City, as American will play a tougher schedule this season. Following Northwestern, the Patriots, ranked No. 208 in the state by Max Preps, take on powerhouses Killian; two-time state champion Norland; a date with North Miami in September; Krop in October; and North Miami Beach, which snatched the district title away from American. The Patriots, who lost to Columbus in the regional quarterfinal, won five consecutive district titles before the Chargers claimed the championship last year Morgan said his roster includes seven returning starters with senior Wayna Williams as the starting quarterback. Williams took over for the injured Tyree Bibby in the Patriots’ loss to the Bulls, and led American to the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season. “He’s done everything we

asked of him,” Morgan said. “He’s pretty talented but some things he needs to brush up on. We all need to brush up on some things.” Morgan said senior running back Chaaleb Womble gets the start because of his play style. “He’s very physical, a good runner with toughness,” he said. Morgan, who was previously American’s defense coordinator, said his defense is a work in progress with some inexperienced players. “But they are very athletic,” he said. Morgan is hoping for a different result against Northwestern after last year’s, 40-16, loss despite the Bulls committing 12 penalties for 90 yards. American lost to Norland, 700, and fell to Carol City, 45-0. HML also plays a difficult schedule, which includes Northwestern, Carol City, Norland, Central, American and Miami Beach. The Trojans are seeking to turn around last year’s team, which finished the season 2-8. The Hialeah Thoroughbreds are HML’s biggest rival, as the two teams clash annually in the Big-T Trophy game on Friday, September 8. Hialeah took home the trophy with a 32-17 victory last year.

Back to School

With eight returning starters, the Trojans’ rebuilding process centers on quarterback Antonio Carballo, who Johnson said gives them the best shot at winning. Despite his players’ defections, Johnson, a Miami native who played for the San Francisco 49ers, said his team has a good line on both sides of the football. “That’s what gives me confidence for this team,” he said. “That’s what wins ball games.” Trojans’ junior safety Joseph Orizon said his team has no fear entering the season.

MIAMI LAKES BENGALS 6U team celebrate a successful 11-1 season.

Mater Lakes Academy students earn top Advanced Placement scores The College Board released the Advanced Placement scores and Mater Lakes Academy received a 72 percent passing rate, the school’s highest ever passing rate. In order to receive a passing score, the AP students must earn a score of 3 or higher in their exam. This year 309 students tested 749 exams, the highest in Mater Lakes Academy history. Over the last five years, Mater Lakes has consistently

increased its passing score from 59 percent in 2012-2013, 62 perecent in 2013-2014, 68 percent in 2014-2015, 71 perecent in 2015-2016, and 72 percent in 2016-2017. Students that take AP courses and score a passing score in their respective exam, could earn college credits nationwide as well as use the credits to save on college tuition. With over twenty AP Courses offered at Mater Lakes

Academy, students have a variety of courses they can take throughout their secondary school experience that peek their interests and passions. “Our teachers have been preparing throughout the summer in Advanced Placement trainings throughout the country to bring the latest and greatest materials to our students to keep the learning environment rigorous and innovative,” said principal, Rene F. Rovirosa.

The Miami Lakes Bengals 6U All-Star baseball team finished the summer with a 11-1 record. The T-Ball team, representing the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes, won four consecutive tournament championships and only lost one game. The team won the tournaments at the Optimist Clubs of Cooper City, Pembroke Lakes, West Pembroke Pines and Miami Lakes. The summer has been “very” good for the Bengals, winning a myriad of nail biters and rallying late in their games to claim the four tournament titles. According to head coach Luis Ochoa, his team showed grit, stamina and a relentless pursuit towards earning the championship trophies. “I’m proud of the kids because they put in a lot of practice,

especially on Saturday and Sundays, spending two months preparing for the tournaments,” said Ochoa. “To get us fully prepared, we practiced against older teams. It was a lot of dedication.” One player’s father, who also volunteers for the team, said the summer of 2017 will be one to remember. “It was an impressive way to redeem themselves after last year’s disappointing serial losses,” said Rene Hernandez, whose seven-year-old son Matthew plays for the Bengals. “The young athletes represented the Town of Miami Lakes well and were awarded with four straight championship trophies and glimmering LED lights to illuminate the impressive victories.”

Pace student David Barbier attends HOBY World Fellowship Conference By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker David Barbier, a junior at Monsignor Edward Pace High School, was one of over 450 students from around the globe to attend the annual Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) World Congress this summer. The HOBY organization was founded in 1958 by American actor Hugh O’Brian in an effort to help in "training and nurturing the young leaders of tomorrow." In the spring, David, a sophomore at the time, and an active member of Pace’s Student Ambassador Society, National Honors Society and Class of 2019 Student Government president, was one of two students chosen to represent the school at HOBY’s regional seminar at Lynn University in Boca Raton. Participation in the regional seminar made him an eligible candidate to attend the World Leadership Conference. This year’s WLC took place from July 22-29 at Chicago’s Loyola University. Throughout the eight-day conference Barbier was able to engage with

DAVID BARBIER influential thought-leaders from across various fields such as volunteerism, media, education, philanthropy, and politics. In addition, he had the opportunity to work in smaller groups with other students and to participate in service oriented activities within the Chicago area.

Mater’s Larissa Perez wins AP College Board honor

Mater Academy High teacher Larissa Perez was recognized as a Springboard Teacher of Distinction at the annual AP College Board Conference in Washington D.C. Teachers of Distinction will become members of the SpringBoard teacher advisory council; they will have the opportunity to review new materials, participate in pilot opportunities, and attend the SpringBoard Pre-Conference and AP Annual Conference. Perez says her passion allows her students to make connections and find a hidden love for math. “I love it when in the middle on a lesson my students say, ‘Mrs. Perez you just blew my mind, what’s next?’

Pace Drama Club members visit London for theatrical study abroad THE MIAMI LAKER

By Raquel Edmundson Special to The Miami Laker Students from Monsignor Edward Pace’s Drama Club traveled to London this summer for a theatrical study abroad program. Eight students, accompanied by parent and faculty chaperones as well as Pace’s new Director of Fine Arts, Marianne Martinez, embarked on a weeklong theatre enthusiast’s dream trip across the pond. The students began the first few days of their journey taking in many of the city’s historical and iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, Westminster Cathedral and the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace, to name a few. In the days that followed the students had the opportunity to attend theatre workshops at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art as well as Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. The group visited William Shakespeare’s birthplace at Stratford-upon-Avon and toured some of the locations where the Harry Potter movies were filmed. As a bonus, the drama students were able to see all of the lessons they learned in action as they attended two live performances of the Broadway hit show Wicked as well as the show that is being called the “best new comedy”, The Play that Goes Wrong.

M.L. Educational Center’s Sabine Joseph attends Miami Montage 2017 By Valeria Bula Special to The Miami Laker It’s not every day that one may find a high school student that exceeds all odds, allowing them to stand out amongst many and accomplish admirable feats. How-ever, Sabine Joseph is one of these rare cases. Joseph, 16, is a rising junior at Miami Lakes Educa-tional Center. She is the layout design editor, as well as the first junior to become managing editor of her school’s newspaper, The Harbinger. Joseph is also a staff writer and photographer for her award-winning yearbook, Alpha & Omega. She is one of 20 young journalists – and the youngest – selected amongst hundreds of talented South Florida applicants to participate in the highly competitive Peace Sullivan/ James Ansin High School Workshop in Journalism and New Media – also known as Miami Montage – for the summer of 2017. Joseph is also the 13th student from MLEC selected to participate in Miami Montage since 2008. For three weeks, participants of the program were introduced to different skills associated with print, broadcast and photographic journalism. “I first heard about the program when my journalism advisor, Neyda Borges, emailed me the application and I just let it sit in my inbox at first,” said Joseph.

“I thought it over and decided that a summer journalism program, especially one on a college campus, was something that I’d really enjoy and that I should take advantage of while I could. I researched several programs, but in the end decided that Montage was the one for me.” Along with publishing a newspaper, the students also produced videos, photos and blogs that were posted on the workshop’s website. “Montage helped me build upon things I had learned in the classroom like interview skills, article writing, and photography,” said Joseph after completing the program. “It also taught me new things, specifically video editing, which, despite being time-consuming and somewhat difficult at first, was fun because it was a skill I wanted to pick up for a while.” During the three weeks of the program, the students lived on the UM campus and were supervised by adult counselors, giving them a glimpse of what university life is like and what to expect. They attended classes in the School of Communication and used the labs in the school to produce the newspaper and their videos, allowing them access to some of the most advanced cameras and computers to complete their projects. Joseph took on the challenge of writing a story on how com-

SABINE JOSEPH

munities are using social media to promote their culture. She also interviewed notable figures from the Little Haiti Cultural Center and the History Miami Museum, having her article then published in University of Miami’s print publication, Montage. “Each year students bring back new skills and enthusiasm for their craft when they return to The Harbinger,” said Borges. “I am very proud of Sabine and am excited to hear about her work at UM and to hear her ideas for this year's publications. I recommend Montage to any high school student who loves journalism and wants to learn more about it, and I hope more Harbinger staffers join the Montage family for years to come.”
