Town maintains 2.3518 tax rate with enough revenue for some capital items The Miami Lakes Town Council unanimously voted to keep the same rate of 2.3518 for property taxes for next year, which is expected to generate about $6 million in revenues. At the July 21 regular meeting, Town Manager Alex Rey indicated the rate, along with other revenues, gives Miami Lakes enough budget money to complete some capital improvement projects and the lawsuit settlement with Mayor Michael Pizzi, whose attorneys are requesting legal fees for their services for the Supreme Court lawsuit against Governor Rick Scott, circuit court trail and the appeals court that ultimately returned him to political office. The town’s 2014-2015 budget has a beginning fund balance of $4.7 million, with prior year carryover funds estimated at $1.3 million for the parks redevelopment program ($721,000), litigation related expenses ($367,925) and other project related expenses ($289,378), reducing the beginning fund balance to $3.4 million. At the end of 2015, the town’s

operations are estimated to result in a surplus of about $400,000, increasing the fund balance to $3.8 million. With the expected reimbursement to FEMA for hurricane related disallowance ($750,000), the estimated unassigned fund balance is $3 million. Other projected revenues for the town for next year include $4.5 million for intergovernmental revenues, $2.7 million for utility service, $1.2 million for building permits and fees, and $1.2 million in franchise fees. Miami-Dade police services constitute the bulk of the town’s expenditures, as Miami Lakes budgeted $7.3 million, an increase of $282,283 due to an increase in the law enforcement health insurance package and pension. The budget also calls for funding of the new 4,000-square-foot Picnic Park East Youth Center, which should be completed in September. The expenses include $112,700 for operations and an additional $7,000 for in-house programming,

with estimated revenue of $30,000 in programming fees. The town has budgeted $70,000 for maintenance services for the new 5,000-square-foot Miami Lakes Optimist clubhouse at Miami Lakes Optimist Park. Rey said the building should be finished during the first quarter of 2016. Miami Lakes budgeted $250,000 for the Pizzi’s legal settlement, far less than what his attorneys are reportedly asking for, which is $750,000. The town’s insurance company could pay for the legal fees to help Miami Lakes save some of the money, Rey said. Miami Lakes also budgeted $20,000 to help underwrite the senior classes at the Mary Collins Community Center, while MiamiDade Public Schools will also seek funding to keep the classes operating for the next fiscal year. The town scheduled the first budget hearing for 5:01 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, and the second hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, September 28, at Miami Lakes Town Hall.

Lakes attorney Jason Murray installed as president of Dade County Bar Assn. By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Jason Murray, president and CEO of Murray Law P.A., located at 15500 New Barn Road in Miami Lakes, was recently installed as the Dade County Bar Association (DCBA) president for the 2015-2016 year. The installment is a marker of history as the oldest and largest voluntary bar association founded in the early 1900’s welcomes Murray as the association’s first African American president. Murray was previously president for the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association. “As our community grapples with the fallacy of a post-racial society, I begin my term as the 99th president of this great association with profound gratitude and great humility,” wrote Murray in

his President’s Message for the DCBA. “Let us continue the work of breaking down the barrier to racial, ethnic and gender diversity within the bench and bar of our legal community.” Murray’s installation as president of the DCBA follows a long list of accolades. Murray Law P.A. has been named in U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Law Firms” list for 2014 as a Tier 2 Law Firm for the practice of Franchise Law in Miami. Murray himself has been ranked in U.S. New and World Report’s list of “Best Lawyers in America” in the practice area of Franchise Law consecutively since 2007. Prior to opening Murray Law P.A., Murray’s interest in law could be traced back as far as seventh grade when signatures and notes from friends in a yearbook speak to hiring him as a lawyer. Murray graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School and later graduated from Duke University with a triple major in English, Political Science and History. Following law school at the University of Virginia, Murray went on to work as a Judicial Clerk for the Honorable Joseph W. Hatchett, United States Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit and first African American elected to the Florida Supreme Court. After working as an associate for Morgan Lewis and Bockius LLP, Murray worked at Carlton Fields, P.A., eventually becoming a partner before parting to create Murray Law P.A. headquartered in Miami Lakes. “Miami Lakes is a great loca-

JASON MURRAY tion for me,” said Murray who is relocating from Bull Run Road to the Leroy Collins Building at 7900 Oak Lane in Miami Lakes Business Park West later this year. “My wife teaches at a local school where my children attend and it’s so much easier to attend performances and games nearby rather than driving all the way from Downtown where we have a smaller location.” Family is important to Murray and was once heavily intertwined with his career plans. Murray’s father, James, was an assistant Pastor and restaurant owner. Murray, much like his father entertained an “entrepreneurial spirit” that he hoped to satisfy by going into the family’s restaurant business. Murray practiced as a young lawyer with goals to take care of the legal aspects of franchising his father’s seafood restaurant but after a family tragedy derailed plans, Murray pursued opening Murray Law P.A. and assumed his father’s previous role as assistant Pastor at Soul Saving Station Church as his father became pastor. Civic, familial, and career duties drive Murray’s schedule which he juggles with seeming ease and grace. Murray moves forward to continue growing the DCBA and planning for its centennial celebration. THE MIAMI LAKER

Tensions mount between mayor and council members David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Last month’s Miami Lakes Town Council meeting saw a continuation of the intense animosity between the mayor and lawmakers. At the July 21 regular meeting, Mayor Michael Pizzi and council members had several heated exchanges while debating Councilmember Tony Lama’s proposal that prevents lawmakers from using the town’s resources for nontown sponsored events. Lama, who was out of the country on business but joined the meeting via Skype, along with council members, raised the issue of the mayor using the town’s letterhead and logo to advertise nontown events for residents while excluding them. Lama said in 2004, then-Councilmember Pizzi sponsored a similar rule after accusing Mayor Wayne Slaton of using taxpayer’s dollars for quasi-campaign pur-

poses, and he is not exempt from his own legislation. “The rule you sponsored in 2004 should apply to everyone,” Lama said. “My item is all about protecting taxpayers. Emails for events not sponsored by the town should not include the town’s letterhead for privately funded events.” Pizzi said he has been hosting pig roasts, barbecues and lakeside gatherings for 20 years, and the events shouldn’t be a problem for council members since he is paying for them out of his own pocket. Council members, who voted 61 in drafting a resolution in support of Lama’s proposal, said the legislation doesn’t stop the mayor from hosting the events, it only prevents him from using the town’s resources for events not sponsored by Miami Lakes. “Your pig roast is fine, do your pig roast, I don’t have a problem with that,” said Councilmember

Frank Mingo. “But don’t use the town’s letterhead, don’t use the resources for that if it’s not a townsponsored event.” The hurricane preparedness event at Costco in June was another example of what council members indicated was quasi-campaigning. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez said he learned about the event from a resident and later discovered it was not sponsored by the town despite an email on town letterhead promoting the event. “I put on my town shirt and went to Costco only to find out it wasn’t a town event, but you sent an email saying it was a town event,” Rodriguez said. “If you have to hold an event, hold it, we’re just asking you to invite the rest of the council if you are going to use the town letterhead on emails. People are attacking us for not being there saying we don’t care.” Mestre, who was also at Costco, said,“The event was a disaster.” “It was embarrassing to only have 14 flashlights. It doesn’t look good on us and we need to have a different image. That’s why I think this legislation is necessary,” Mestre said. Pizzi said he will continue to host his pig roasts and other events despite the disapproval of his colleagues. Lama said the mayor is not practicing what he preached 11 years ago. “You are clearly at odds with your own words that you wrote in 2004,” Lama said. Lama’s proposed legislation and Rodriguez’s recommendation

to give the town clerk control over the speaker cards and calling up residents, instead of the mayor, to give everyone a chance to address lawmakers, initially caused a problem between Pizzi, Town Clerk Marjorie Tejeda-Castillo and Town Manager Alex Rey. The mayor spurned the two new business agenda items the day before the regular meeting and allegedly threatened legal action against Tejeda-Castillo and Rey if they become law. The alleged threat of a lawsuit reportedly happened in a private meeting at Town Hall, which led to Tejeda-Castillo’s abrupt resignation, Rey said in a memo to council members. As a result, the Town Council, at the July regular meeting, unanimously voted to ask the state’s attorney office to investigate the deportment of the mayor for conceivably violating the town’s charter that might have caused TejedaCastillo to quit a $72,000 a year job. Pizzi left the six-hour meeting early for personal reasons and didn’t vote. Mestre, who called for the investigation, indicated some town employees quit their jobs because they could no longer tolerate a domineering and bullying mayor. “This is not something to be taken lightly,” Mestre said. According to the town’s charter, no individual council member shall give orders to the town manager or any other town employees. The mayor and council members can be removed from office by the state’s attorney office if they violate the charter.

Pizzi denied the lawsuit threat and told reporters Rey’s memo to council members explaining Tejeda-Castillo’s resignation was inaccurate. “This is absolutely not true and I made no such statements,” Pizzi said in an email addressed to Rey. “What I told you and not Marjorie, was that I thought that we were all obligated to follow the town charter and state law that I was concerned about any attempt to request that town staff of anything that was ever illegal or in violation of any laws of our charter.” In her own email response, Tejeda-Castillo confirmed that Rey’s account was accurate.. In a related action, lawmakers approved Rey’s nomination of former Deputy Town Clerk Gina Inguanzo to replace TejedaCastillo as Town Clerk. Pizzi called the investigations and Lama’s and Rodriguez’s proposed legislation an act to prevent him from performing his mayoral duties after the town fought so hard to keep him from returning to political office following his acquittal on public corruption charges. Second staff member resigns On Friday, July 31, Lissette Molina, who had been serving as an assistant to Pizzi for the last two months, resigned from her position effective August 12. Molina texted a message to The Miami Herald saying, “It is unfortunate that due to the mayor’s continued actions, I have resigned. My parents have instilled in me a strong work ethic, dignity and self respect. I am looking forward to continuing to pursue my career.”

Miami Lakes Town Council:

Summary of actions taken at July 21 regular meeting By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The Miami Lakes Town Council postponed a vote to enact legislation to prevent a developer from adding homes in the Loch Ness neighborhood under the mayor’s Homeowner Protection Act despite a petition from residents who said subdividing their community will endanger their quality of living. At the July 21 regular Town Council meeting, lawmakers were in support of protecting their living standards but said a vote was premature since the developer has yet to create or submit any blueprints to the town and didn’t want to violate the Bert Harris Act. The Florida law protects the rights of property owners and provides victims of regulatory abuse with the opportunity to seek just compensation, for the diminishment of their property rights and values. Most of the residents who spoke at the meeting said the developer is planning to build five homes by subdividing a large single lot in the single family neighborhood. Miriam Campos, whose late husband Sergio Campos was president of the Loch Ness Homeowners Associations for 30 years, said he worked so hard to maintain the quality of life for residents. “On behalf of my husband, I support the Homeowner Protection Act,” she said. A lobbyist for the developer

said albeit an official plan hasn’t been drawn up yet, his client talked about building five to six homes on the property he recently purchased. He said the homes would be larger than the original Loch Ness homes that were built by The Graham Companies years ago but the subdivided lots would be in compliance with the town’s land development code. “Six lots meet the code but we dropped it to five to make peace and arrive at a compromise,” the man said. “How can we draft legislation before we know what he’s actually doing to do there?” asked Councilmember Frank Mingo. “I would support it if the Loch Ness Homeowners Association were to indemnify the town for what action we take.” Lama said the town is jumping the gun by enacting legislation to prevent a developer from building on his own property when he has yet to divulge his plans. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez said he attended several Loch Ness Homeowners Association meetings, where he learned about the low water pressure possibly caused by a damaged six-inch water main. “We’re doing research and that problem alone may stop him from building homes,” Rodriguez said. The Town Council will host a workshop on the issue and learn more about the developer’s building plans.

In other Town Council News: • Council members gave their initial approval for an ordinance to create a new Town Center zoning district, and rezone the Town Center area to the new zoning district. The Town Center is currently under two different districts, the RM-50 district, apartments at up to 50 dwelling units per acre, and the BU-2 district, a standard commercial district that allows all but the most intense retail and businesses uses. Miami Lakes Town Center has been envisioned since the original master plan for the town as a walkable, mixed-use area similar to a traditional small town “Main Street,” and is centered on Main Street development east and west of N.W. 67 Avenue. Council members’ final vote on the ordinance following a public hearing is set for September. • Council members approved Mayor Michael Pizzi’s recommendation to revise the town’s land development code to allow residents to keep their existing air conditioning screen enclosures that were cited as a violation. A group of residents, most of whom have lived in Miami Lakes for more than 20 years, said it would cost them thousands of dollars to replace their air conditioning enclosures, causing them economic hardship. Pizzi’s proposal calls for town staff to draft an ordinance to eliminate the town’s requirement to replace the structures, which will go before two public hearings, first

in front of the Local Planning Agency and then council members. But before the public hearings, Pizzi suggested hosting workshops on the issue which may include a discussion on allowing homeowners associations to handle the matters individually. • Council members approved the Lake Sandra Homeowners Association application for the Town’s Neighborhood Matching Grant Program in the amount of $5,000 for a beautification project. • Lawmakers approved a conditional use for zoning for an indoor shooting range proposed by Diez Incorporated. The proposed site is located at 14000 N.W. 82 Avenue, which is adjacent to a sporting good store. The shooting range would only open for police officers and correctional officers. • Council members approved Counclmember Ceasar Mestre’s and Rodriguez’s proposed legislation that mandates kids in recreational sports at the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, Miami Lakes United Soccer and other physical activities have an EKG before they can participate. The proposal was suggested in the wake of the tragic death of 11year-old Breanna Vergara, a Miami Lakes dance studio student who collapsed and died during practice in December. An autopsy revealed Breanna suffered cardiac arrest from a heart condition called Wolff-ParkinsonWhite (WPW), according to her

mother, Claudia. She said an EKG would’ve detected the heart condition before she went to practice. Rodriguez, a firefighter, said his nephew, who is athlete, discovered he had WPW through an EKG and doctors wouldn’t clear him to play until the heart condition was fixed. • Council members approved Vice Mayor Manny Cid’s proposal to direct town staff and the town’s consultant to integrate a Complete Streets policy into the town’s upcoming Strategic Plan. • Council members approved the mayor’s recommendation to sponsor a resolution requesting that the Miami-Dade County Public School Board, either through its existing budget or community partnerships, fund the adult education programs that currently serve seniors in the town.

quick birthday gift? We want to be that store that comes to mind.” Perez, familiar with the town as a resident, chose Miami Lakes as the first location of her boutique named after her daughter, Bellamei. Despite the ease with which Perez runs Bella Chic, the store did not come into being overnight. Perez is involved in real estate and lending but hoped to devote her time into a project close to her heart. “I wanted to do something different, something more fulfilling, something that I love,” said Perez. “The store is a lot of work, but you get to meet people and you get to help the community.” As part of building relationships with shoppers, there are frequent happy hour days with wine and cupcake desserts that accompany shoppers throughout the month and Perez has worked with charities for fundraisers such as the Holtz Children’s Hospital which received 10 percent of the store’s profit during a shopping event. Plans are in the works to open a second store following the success of the Miami Lakes location. Shopping hours are Mondays through Fridays from noon to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The store is closed Sundays. JetStream Federal relocates administrative offices By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff JetStream Federal Credit Union’s administrative offices have been relocated to the Leroy Collins building, 7900 Oak Lane, Suite 300 in Miami Lakes as of late July. The mailing address for

all correspondence and billing remains the same at P.O. Box 5487 Miami Lakes, FL 33014. The new location is double the square footage of the former administrative offices to allot room for the credit union’s growing needs. JetStream’s president

and CEO, Jeanne Kucey, notes that the credit union has doubled net income year after year since 2009. The headquarter’s new look and new technology at the Leroy Collins building will also feature a full service ATM. Despite the move of the admin-

istrative offices, which include senior management and accounting among other departments, the tellers and ATM location at 6600 Cow Pen Road will remain in service until September before transitioning to a space in the Royal Oaks Shopping Center at 15420 N.W. 77 Court. JetSteam members may also use the ATM located at the Publix, 15000 Miami Lakes Drive, for a surcharge. Office hours at the Cow Pen Road ATM location and the new administrative offices are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Check deposits

can also be made using JetStream’s mobile app available on iPhones and Android phones. JetStream’s updates extend to more than a larger location, as they are now one of the first credit unions to offer a specialized EMV chip in debit and credit cards for heightened security. The chip uses secure technology to make it more difficult to copy account information, better protecting users from fraud. The chip card is is accepted at any location that accepts Visa. Pace cheerleaders win first place at UCA camp By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker The award-winning cheerleading squad at Monsignor Edward Pace High School has another set of trophies to add to its mantle after placing first among 11 other South Florida high schools and winning the Overall Spirit and Leadership awards at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp Championship at Nova Southeastern University from July 22 through 25. The Spartan cheerleaders spent several weeks training inside the Pace Spartan Center, laying out mats across the entire floor to practice their routines and hone their tumbling, aerials, dismounts, and other techniques. The Spartan cheerleaders led by coaches Victoria Marino, a Pace Class of

2013 alumna, and Chelsea Zeigler, Pace Class of 2011, then traveled to Nova for the four-day camp, staying overnight in the Leo Goodwin Sr. Residence Hall. Participating in the camp’s advanced program, the Pace squad focused on improving their stunt skills and practicing different routines. All of their efforts paid off in their final performance on July 25, where they were ranked the highest out of all the squads by UCA college professionals and took home the First Place trophy. On top of this judges’ award, the Spartan cheerleaders received the camp’s Leadership award as voted on by the other squads and coaches for showcasing the best leadership and cheerleader qualities of respect, treatment of others and teamwork.

The Spartan cheerleaders were most excited to win, of all things, a giant inflatable banana. The banana was the Overall Spirit award given out by the UCA, and it was something the Spartan cheerleaders had been trying to win for years, even going as far as to bring signs to the camp’s opening ceremonies referencing it. This year, they finally got “their banana” to top off the rest of their awards.

Final weekend for Reefer Madness, the Musical at the Main Street Playhouse The Main Street Players, 6766 Main St. Miami Lakes, present Reefer Madness, The Musical in its final weekend, August 7-9, at the Main Street Playhouse. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. This campy musical comedy, under the direction of Vanessa Elise, takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. The musical features lyrics by Kevin Murphy and music by Dan Studney. Reefer Madness is a satire of the 1936 American exploitation film of the same name. The 1936 film (originally

titled Tell Your Children) was financed by a church group, who intended it to be shown to parents as a morality tale warning them about the dangers of marijuana use. The film gained cult status in the 1970s among marijuana smokers, however, who found it unintentionally comedic. The musical version opened at the Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles, California, in 1998 and enjoyed a brief Off-Broadway run in September of 2001. A Showtime film based on the musical was made for TV in 2005. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $18 for students. For tickets and information contact the theatre at 305-558-3737 or visit www.mainstreetplayers.com.

Adazzles continues its ‘Forward in’15’ plan Adazzles Hair Salon and Supply, located at 7317 Miami Lakes Drive in the Cypress Village Shopping Center, in partnership with the Miami Lakes Auto Mall, is continuing its “Forward in ’15” Free Makeover program this month by providing free makeovers to two local girls. Two local elementary school students will receive free full makeovers including haircuts, manicures, hair products, new school uniforms and school supplies.

“We are continuing our ‘Forward in 15’ campaign by providing full makeovers to two young girls who haven’t had the same opportunities as other children their age,” said Carlo Krockel, manager of Adazzles. “If we can make their lives a little better with this small gesture, why not?” Earlier this year, Krockel and his team provided beauty services to three randomly selected women who would otherwise not have had

the means to purchase it themselves. The two new recipients of the salon’s charity are sisters who are currently in foster care and attend a local school. Their makeovers were scheduled for August 4. “We want to challenge others out there by asking them why they aren’t giving more back,” Krockel said. “If we can, we should.” For more information call 305820-8744 or visit www.facebook. com/Adazzlessalon.

Adam Ruiz receives Roland Gomez Scholarship Award; chooses UCF By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff As Adam Ruiz was wrestling with his ambivalence over which college to chose, Florida State University or University Central Florida, he created a sibling rival and a divided house. His older brother, Eric, attended FSU and wanted him to enroll at his alma mater, but his other brother, Brian, who attended UCF, was coaxing him to choose the school he graduated from. It was a tough decision for Adam Ruiz, but he choose to be a Knight because the Central Florida school meet his academics and athletic needs. “Visiting the campus, the college offered a lot of big things and so many options for me to do,” said the Monsignor Pace High graduate. “They offer a lot of things to keep me busy like I did in high school.” Ruiz was the latest winner of the Roland Gomez-Miami Lakes Optimist Club Scholarship for the 2014-2015 school year to receive his award, a check for $1,000 to use for college, as he prepares to take his academic and athletic talents to UCF in the Fall. Since he was four-years-old, Ruiz played baseball and basketball at the Optimist Club, and he excelled at baseball and volleyball

at Pace, while maintaining a 4.8 GPA and balancing community service and a job. Being closer to home was another reason why the Miami Lakes resident chose UCF, where he plans to study Sports and Exercise Science. “I will have relatives closer than if I had chosen FSU,” he said. “UCF provides criteria where I can handle academic and sports. It’s a friendly atmosphere. I’m glad I chose the school because it’s the right fit for me. My house was a little divided as I was making my decision.” Ruiz said he was shocked when he won the Roland Gomez Scholarship award. “A friend of mine won it before and he told me how prestigious the award is,” Ruiz said. “I was shocked when I won it because I

know how important it was. With all the years at the Optimist Club, the award means a lot to everyone.” Jim Hamilton, president of the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, said Ruiz was outstanding in all phases to win the contest. “He was extraordinary doing well in academics and sports and community service while maintaining a high GPA and good conduct,” Hamilton said. “It was such a thrill that he was the winner of the scholarship.” Ruiz said following college graduation, he plans on returning to the Optimist Club and volunteer his service. “I have meet so many friends at the Optimist Club that I don’t mind coming back to volunteer here,” he said.

Patriots football team focused on winning state By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The American High Patriots look good on both sides of the ball on paper but the new season will tell whether the football team can experience another successful regular season, and also erase the disappointing early round playoff exit. American won the district championship four consecutive years but their seasons ended in disappointment, as they were eliminated in the first round of the postseason under former coach Corey Bell and new coach Anthony White. With a talented roster, including four heavily recruited seniors, and depth at quarterback, American is picked to take the next step and advance in the playoffs in White’s second year with the team. The defense this year is solid on paper as well. Led by defensive end Jamal Smith, who is 6-3 and 235 pounds, defensive back Antione Webster (6-0 and 185 pounds), cornerback

Dawun Hylton (6-0 and 175 pounds) and cornerback Roy Baker who stands 6-2 at 170 pounds. The foursome are heavily recruited in the nation, according to 247 Sports an affiliation with CBS Sports. Webster has verbally committed to Florida Atlantic University but says he is planning to visit West Virginia in the near future. Hylton, who hasn’t made a decision, is being recruited by Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Fordham, Illinois, Indiana and Jacksonville State, Southern Illinois, South Florida, Texas and Wake Forest. Baker has chosen the University of Buffalo over North Carolina State. “Buffalo showed me a lot of love,” Baker said. “I was on the top of their list in recruitment. Plus I feel that I have the best opportunity to showcase my talents there. They also play on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN3, which caught my eye, too.” Smith, Webster, Hylton and

Baker all made The Miami Herald’s All-Dade Team on defense last season. College recruiters depicted Baker as fairly raw as a defensive back but possesses great length, size and potential heading into his senior year. Webster should be exceptionally good this year following a stellar 2014 season. He transferred to American that year from Champagne Catholic and helped improve the defense. Also, Webster has an added incentive on the football field. He’s learning from one of the top safeties in the NFL, his older brother, Kayvon Webster, who plays for the Denver Broncos. Hylton is described as an aggressive defensive back with top-notch speed. The Patriots are counting on him to defend the deep pass. Also playing on the starting defense are linebackers Netron Culpepper and Joshua Dinson. White said the starting quarterback position is still up for grabs. Competing for the job are sen-

ior Steve Hollingsworth, junior Tyree Bibby and sophomore Legend Moore. White said the three are in a fierce battle to determine the starting quarterback. Senior Sinque Sweeten was picked as the starting running back and with his size, speed and experience, the Patriots are banking on him to rack up big yards. Albeit he’s a sophomore, junior Craig Cooper is also key to the running game. American’s top receivers for the new season are junior Anthony White Jr., the coach’s son, and sophomores Marques Jackson and DeAndre Coley. White said he’s looking to build upon the success the team had last year. “We’re looking to build on what we started last year,” he said. “Overall, our team looks good for the season. On paper, we should be better than we were last year.” American faces Miramar on Saturday, August 22 in a preseason classic game and opens up the regular season against Northwestern on Friday, August 28.

Optimist’s All-Star softball team hears from ex-All-Star The Miami Lakes Heat All-Star softball team, from the Miami Lakes Optimist Club, got a surprise visitor last month to speak to them about playing college softball. Abi Valdes, who now attends Shorter University in Georgia, returned to her softball roots to encourage her younger peers to attend college and play softball at their July 14 practice. The Hawks player wanted to give back to the sport that she grew up playing since she was 7 years old. She has been talking to as many young players as possible and letting them know what they could start doing to get into college ball and what to expect when they get there. She stressed the importance of maintaining good grades and maintaining a high standard of excellence in the classroom, playing the best ball possible over the

years, being willing to play different positions and having an overall great attitude towards everything. Following her speech, she fielded a lot of questions from players and parent and answered every one of them. “The girls took to Abi and were motivated by her speech and presence, said Miami Lakes Optimist softball commissioner Alex Castroman, who along with Abi’s father, Gus, arranged the event. “Her parents are extremely proud of their daughter and very grateful by the opportunity she was given which resulted from her hard work and all that she has achieved. They are also happy to see their daughter’s willingness to give back by expressing how grateful she is and sharing her knowledge with players that will eventually travel on the same path that she has, said Castroman.

THE MIAMI LAKER

Pace High’s football team welcomes back former head coach Joseph Zaccheo By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Joseph Zaccheo is a wellknown name in South Florida high school football. As the head coach of the Monsignor Edward Pace High School football team, he led the Spartans to their first football state title in 2003. In 2005, Zaccheo was named Pace Athletic Director and retired from coaching until the 20152016 season. He has returned as head coach of the football team in a move that has excited both the local and Pace community. His goal is to make Pace a major player in Florida high school football once again. “We want to be competitive at the highest level in the state,” said Zaccheo. Even as he continues working as Pace’s Athletic Director, Zaccheo has been making moves and reinvesting the team with young players. His coaching staff is a mix of old and new coaches that include former professional and college football players. The 53 studentathletes took part in preseason conditioning. For the upcoming season, Zaccheo expects the starting varsity team to be 80 percent freshmen and sophomores. Full training started on August 3, but the team has been working on pre-season conditioning for weeks.

Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, players come in the morning to the school’s newly renovated weight room to build up their strength by following a regimented system. Each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, the team builds on their speed, agility and explosiveness on the field. “We’re getting kids to be consistent to do things the same way, the same time, every time they do it,” said Zaccheo. One of the new players is Khwan Mickens, an incoming freshman from Masters Prep who will be playing safety and receiver. He added that Zaccheo has been instilling in his team that “hard work gets you to where you want to be.” The team of young Spartans will show off their skills in front of Pace football alumni during an inter-squad scrimmage at the first annual Pace Football Reunion on Saturday, August 8. The inaugural event is free to the public which is spearheaded by Zaccheo in an effort to bring generations of Spartan football players back to their alma mater to reconnect with old teammates and staff. The event starts at 9 a.m. with the scrimmage, an alumni flag football game, old game footage, and a picnic. Pace will host the pre-season kick-off classic against Coral Reef on Friday, August 21 at 7 p.m. with $5 admission.

Three MLEC students attend UM journalism workshop Three Miami Lakes Educational Center journalism students were selected to participate in the 2015 Peace Sullivan/ James Ansin High School Journalism and New Media workshop at the University of Miami in July. The program accepted applications from across

South Florida and of the hundreds of applicants, only 20 were selected. The highly selective program is fully-funded by generous donors and the University of Miami (UM) to be offered at no cost to participants. The students live on UM’s campus and the workshops are

held at the university’s School of Communication. MLEC journalism students have been selected to participate in this program each year since 2008. Each summer, the program directors select a theme or focus for the newspaper, Miami Montage, and

brainstorm story ideas with the students on the very first day. This year's theme was climate change and students created and produced a print publication and a multimedia package including video, an online edition and utilized various social media outlets. Following the three week intensive program, professors and directors select some of the best

work and present those students an award at the annual end of summer banquet. This year, MLEC senior and managing editor of The Harbinger, Nathalie Mairena, won for Best News Story and Best Video. Both works will now be entered into the Dow Jones competition for excellence in young journalism.

Oronde Taliaferro holds skill classes for Optimist Club basketball players, coaches Hoping to improve the basketball program for boys and girls players, the Miami Lakes Optimist Club has found a man who coached in the NBA, college and in high school, willing to lend helping hand. Oronde Taliaferro, who coached NBA Superstar Blake Griffin when he was an assistant at Oklahoma, has volunteered his time to teach Optimist Club coaches and players the basic fundamentals of the game, skills development and overall knowledge enhancement. Taliaferro and the Optimist Club agreed to first hold coaching seminars August 8 to September 26 at one of Miami Lakes’ community centers to get the partnership rolling. The skills training sessions will take place at three locations, Barbara Goleman High School, Hialeah Gardens High School, and L.A. Fitness. Miami Lakes Optimist Club president Jim Hamilton said the organization is lucky to have Taliaferro’s assistance to teach and train coaches and players. “What better way to improve our coaching abilities to run prac-

He said he decided to help out the basketball program because he marveled at Hamilton’s lifetime dedication to helping kids on the basketball court and classroom. “Jim Hamilton is a guy who is all about the kids and the community,” Taliaferro said. “We’re hoping to bring new ideas and new ways to impact the basketball culture in Miami Lakes.”

competed against studios from around the nation and earned top results in several categories. Chloe Pineiro won the title of “Miss Dance America” and Katie Camero and Kandis Terry were first and second runners-up, respectively. Marirosa Crawford won the title of “Miss Teen Dance America.” Madison Fernandez and Samantha Manrique were third and fifth runners-up for the title of “Miss Petite Dance America.” Additionally Intensity Dancers’ Studio groups “We Like to Party,” “Snow,” “Hit It Up” and “Loneliness” were all named first overall winners in a variety of group categories such as Petite Large Group Competition, Teen Large Group Competition, Senior Small Group Competition and Showcase Finals. “Our studio scored higher at Nationals this year than it had ever scored in the past,” said instructor Marisa Bidegaray. “We'd like to think that this has to do with the love and respect these girls have for each other. Our team captains Katie Camero and Kandis Terry played a big part too. We were especially excited to win in the senior division. The talent was incredible. Most of these girls have been dancing together for 10 years. It was a beautiful way to end the season and say goodbye to our wonderful seniors.”

New Testament Baptist Church offers prayer concert August 22 New Testament Baptist Church (NTBC), located at 6601 N.W. 167 Street, has been in the area of Miami Lakes for over 61 years proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The church is celebrating the first annual “Concert of Prayer” starting at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, at Wooten Field, the football field at NTBC.

The Concert of Prayer is meant to unite church, school and community families in prayer. The event’s motto is “Pray Until God Answers.” Despite there being no music, the event is called a “concert” because of the many voices simultaneously calling out in prayer. The idea for a Concert of Prayer was born out of the church’s desire for a spiritual revival to take place at the personal, family, church-wide, local, and national levels. The church says the power to heal hearts and minds is found in prayer as noted in Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” The Concert of Prayer will be formatted in such a way that everyone can participate according to their comfort level. There will be moments of silent prayers, prayers led by pastors, prayers led by church leaders, prayers in groups, and individual prayer. The event is open to all. For more information contact Pastor Ralph Rodriguez at 305-7732031.

“One day I had the idea of using silence to test the children’s keenness of hearing, so I thought of calling them by name, in a low whisper. This exercise in patient waiting demanded a patience that I thought impossible.” As a graduate of both Western Kentucky State College and American Montessori Teaching Training Institute along with a Master’s degree in Theology, I know that nothing is impossible with God. The Bible verse Mark 10:27 reads “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” The Montessori preschool exercises in Practical Life, especially grace, courtesy, and social awareness lessons are indirect preparation for the Silence Game. A child must learn to control and perfect their movement. They quietly push a chair under the table carefully, quietly walking around a work rug on the floor, they pour rice carefully without the sound of rice falling on the table, or they grasp small stones and place them quietly into another container. The Bible says on listening quietly in Corinthians 2:9-10 “But as it is written, eye hath not seen nor ear hear, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His spirit for the spirit searcheth all things yea, the deep things of God.” Some additional games the children play to perfect their ability to be still and quietly listen are passing a bell around a circle without it ringing and listening to the rain.
