MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA

Election season opens for 3 council and mayoral seats By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The election season for Miami Lakes officially swung into full gear last week when the qualifying period got underway, as 15 candidates, 10 of whom are political neophytes, are seeking four Town Council seats up for grabs in November. Councilmember Manny Cid and Miami Lakes’ first mayor Wayne Slaton, are vying for the mayoral position, while two incumbents, Councilmembers Tony Lama and Nelson Rodriguez, are trying to hold on to their seats for four more years. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre was forced to drop out of the mayoral race after he missed a requirement to resign from his seat 10 days before the start of the qualifying period. After Seat Five was left open following Cid’s decision to run for mayor, the race could have been between nine candidates but three dropped their bids, leaving six political officer seekers on the campaign trial.

Political novices Roberto Alonso Jr., former chair of the town’s Public Safety Committee and whose father was the town’s first vice mayor; Esther Colon, former town manager for Lauderdale by the Sea; Luis Collazo, chair of the Elderly Affairs Committee; criminal defense attorney Nayib Hassan; business woman Caridad Vasallo; and Wendy Milanes are running for the vacant seat. Cynthia Beyer, Rosalina Nunez and Alejandro Sanchez, chairman of the Miami Lakes Veteran’s Affairs Committee, dropped out of the race. For Seat One, incumbent Nelson Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter, is facing off against Xiomara Pazos, CEO and president of a non-emergency medical transportation company, and newcomer Alex Dehghani. Pazos unsuccessfully ran against Mestre in 2014. Councilmember Tony Lama is fending off challenges by newcomers Robin Brown-Beamon,

Council keeps same tax rate; $1.8 million remains unfunded By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff When Miami Lakes council members voted on the town staff’s proposal to keep the same rate for property taxes for 2016-2017 last week, one council member contemplated an increase to pay for services residents indicated have gone neglected for sometime now. Councilmember Tim Daubert said he thought about a tax rate hike following a chorus of entreaties to finish revamping Miami Lakes Optimist Park, upgrading the drainage systems in residential neighborhoods, and spending money for the Black Olive tree removal program. At last week’s regular Town Council meeting, lawmakers set the preliminary rate of 2.3581 mills, which is $2.3518 per $1,000 of assessed property values, and

A Look Inside:

estimated to generate about $6.2 million in revenue. During the budget hearings, lawmakers can only reduce the rate, which is currently an increase from $5.9 million for last year. Miami Lakes, which has budgeted $15.7 million in general fund revenues for next year, is focusing on beautification and plans to spend at least $822,000 on projects for the N.W. 154 Street corridor, N.W. 67 Avenue and 138 Street, the West Lake Neighborhood Reforestation Program, and beautification for N.W. 87 Avenue and 170 Street. According to a budget overview with preliminary figures, about $1.8 million of services were included in the spending plan but without any funding, including $500,000 for litigation

Miami Lakes’ long-running Summerfest concert will present its 25th Anniversary summer music festival at 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 6. The free concert will be held at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church, 14800 N.W. 67 Avenue. The Summerfest Chamber Orchestra will feature musicians and soloists who have participated in the festival over the past 25 years, including members of the Arpeggione Chamber Orchestra of Austria, the Mission Chamber Orchestra of Rome, Hungarian Virtuosi, Italy’s I Music and others, representing more than 10 different countries. Under the baton of Symphony artistic director, Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, the Miami

who retired after a 30 year career at Miami-Dade County, attorney Elizabeth Delgado and Jose Nodal Jr., a building inspector. At press time, Cid, Slaton, Pazos, Rodriguez, Lama, Collazo, Colon, Delgado and Hassan had qualified to run in the November 8 election. The qualifying period ended August 3. If neither candidate collects 51 percent of the votes, the winner will be determined in a run-off election two weeks later. So far, Cid leads all candidates in fundraising with $43,000, according to the town’s election website. Mestre, who had raised $40,000, including loaning himself $3,000 before leaving the mayoral race, indicated missing the requirement actually was a sigh of relief since the campaigning took a toll on spending quality time with his family. “It made me reflect on telling my six year-old daughter, daily, I can’t go in the pool, I need to campaign,” Mestre said in a statement he posted on Facebook. “The other missed family trips, birthday parties, school activities and movies. My intentions are to continue to represent the residents of Miami Lakes until my term expires in 2018 and continue to do what I think is best.” Cid counts Abel Fernandez, battalion chief of Miami-Dade fire rescue for the two Miami Lakes’

Lakes concert will feature the music of Vivaldi, Mozart, Bloch, Fuchs, and more. Georgian violinist Sandro Tigishvili will be a featured soloist in an American premiere arrangement for strings of the Concertino by Georgian composer Otar Taktakishvili, commissioned by the Symphony of the Americas for the Summerfest 25th anniversary. Other soloists include Summerfest Concertmaster and violinist Orlando Forte of Cuba, violinist Svetlana Forte of Ukraine, and flutist Marilyn Maingart of the USA. stations; Joseph Sosa, a representative of the office of State Representative Manny Diaz Jr.; and Miami Lakes Charter Revision Committee member Mirtha Mendez among his supporters. Lama, who has raised $20,477, said during his first four years in political office, Miami Lakes has increased transparency and accountability through the implementation of the town’s mobile application. In addition, Lama and Rodriguez, who raised $5,625 for his campaign, have been hosting traffic summits and meetings with officials from FDOT and MiamiDade to zero in on several solutions to resolve the long-running traffic nightmare during peak hours. “I have led to make our traffic problems the single most important challenge we must overcome by redirecting town resources in support of these efforts,” Lama said in a statement about his reelection bid. “No single issue impacts our way of life or our businesses.” Among Lama’s supporters is Coral Gables-based Conservative Principles of Florida, a political committee, which also contributed $1,000 to Rodriguez’s campaign, which is the maximum amount allowed under Florida law. Sales Tax Holiday August 5-7, time for stock up on school supplies It’s that time of year again! Florida shoppers once again will have a three-day “taxfree holiday” weekend in anticipation of the new school year. This year’s sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2016, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2016. No Florida sales tax or local option tax will be collected during this time on the following: Clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $60 or less per item, and certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item. This holiday does not apply to personal computers and computer-related accessories. Among the allowed school supplies are the following: Binders, calculators, cellophane (transparent) tape, blank CDs, construction paper, lunch boxes, notebook filler paper, poster paper and scissors. School supply items that are NOT exempt from sales taxes include: Books that are not otherwise exempt; computer paper; correction tape – fluid – pens; masking tape; printer paper; staplers and staples. Miami-Dade School Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman’s proposal to promote this holiday to families was unanimously agreed upon by her School Board colleagues at their May 2016 meeting. For more information about the sales tax holiday, and for lists of specific items and their taxable status during the tax-free period visit http://dor.myflorida.com/ dor/tips/pdf/tip16a0106_2016final06022016.pdf.

Council hears calls for more services, but ‘don’t raise taxes’ (Continued from Page 1) services, $292,670 for two additional police officers, $85,000 for the removal and replacement of Black Olive trees and $35,000 for youth and senior citizens programs. Daubert said constituents want better services but he told them it may cost them slightly more in property taxes. According to Daubert, Miami Lakes would need to spend $9.7 million to upgrade services for a new drainage system in Royal Oaks, Lake Sarah and the West Lakes area, the Black Olive tree program, Miami Lakes Optimist Park and two additional police officers. “That’s six items costing $9.7 million,” he said. “Residents are saying the water is coming up to their garages. On some streets, people can’t go through because they are flooded.” Daubert eventually voted to keep the 2.3581 rate but plans to take an active role in helping the town cut unnecessary expenses to fund more significant municipal projects. “I look at every penny we have spent each year on contracts,” he said. “I look at them to save the town some money.” Councilmember Frank Mingo echoed Daubert’s concerns for

residents wanting more services. “I hear the same thing, but even louder, I hear don’t raise my taxes,” he said. “It’s tough times out there despite what people say about the economy, so I will support the same rate.” Councilmember Manny Cid also understood Daubert’s position and offered an alternative to fund the projects instead of raising taxes. “Hopefully, we can keep impact fees from police, fire and library in the town,” Cid said. “There are a lot of things that need to be done.” Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez said homeowners compare Miami Lakes to other cities with beautiful parks, but there’s a catch. “They have higher tax rates that can get it done quickly,” he said. “In Doral, look at its parks but also look at its millage rate.” Rodriguez said residents should decide if they want their property taxes raised. “Put it on the ballot in November to decide the rate for 2017-2018,” he said. The budget hearings have been scheduled for Tuesday, September 6, at 5:01 p.m., and Tuesday, September 20, at 6 p.m. at Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Seidy Andres is the entrepreneur she never expected she would be, and it started with a question: When will Miami Lakes open a blow dry bar on Main Street? Time passed but there were no signs of a blow dry bar for the Miami Lakes community. With a combination of supportive family and resourceful skills Andres ended up answering her own question with the creation of “Wet Dry” a blow dry bar and style house that now sits at 6813 Main Street. Andres worked as a pharmaceutical representative before becoming a full-time mom to her daughter Kailey, 11, and her son, Jake, 5. The only first hand experience she had garnered regarding hair styling and makeup came from watching Youtube tutorials to braid her daughter’s hair. Andres eventually found herself making hobbies into business ideas and with the help of her co-owner and mother-in-law, Grisell Andres, Wet Dry had a grand opening on July 8. Despite not having professional experience as a stylist, Andres’ passion for hair styling and makeup as well as her experience in salons and blow dry bars, cultivated a vision for what she hoped for in her own business. “I knew from the beginning I didn’t want this to be necessarily a ‘blow dry bar’ because there are many blow dry bars in Miami and they’re mostly all the same,” said Andres. “I wanted to set us apart by focusing on making this a style

house. The atmosphere is different, and so much of what I had in mind for Wet Dry ended up being made from scratch.” Andres’ husband, Alex, and her father-in-law own a company called Anisenn Inc. General Contractors, and because Andres’ vision for her business ambience and space was so unlike what was commercially available almost every item from chairs to decorations were drawn up and built specifically for Wet Dry. The result is a style house unlike any other. Upon entering clients are met with a wall of knick knacks, each one lovingly picked by Andres herself to represent something meaningful in her life. On the shelves are baseball magazines to represent her son, her children’s initials, a small statue of a squirrel in reference to the many squirrels of Miami Lakes and many other trinkets.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The brainchild of a retired police officer, who volunteers in the Guardian Ad Litem program, and a Miami Lakes businessman resulted in the creation of Guardian Watch, Inc. a 501c(3) non-profit. Guardian Watch was formed in 2013 by business teacher and entrepreneur, Paul Marino, where it began providing educational enrichment, mentoring, tutoring, meals, character development and even transportation to foster and at-risk students in the Northwest Miami-Dade area. The program focuses on providing services to middle school and sometimes high school students who are in danger of falling behind in school usually due to socio-economic situations. Guardian Watch provides these services completely free of charge, sustaining operations purely through grants and donations. Guardian Watch also gathers highcaliber educators and counselors to offer top of the line resources and mentors for their students. Marino works closely with Dr. Mara Zapata, chairperson for K-12 Teacher Education Programs, School of Education at MiamiDade College. Zapata also serves as director of Programs, Development and Integrity for Guardian Watch. Together with highly trained staff members, Guardian Watch provides outstanding services to help students pass their classes. A total of 90 percent of students

in the program passed last semester. The end goal is that the student is self-sufficient. The program also has its own Boy Scout troop to involve students in extra-curricular actives that build interpersonal skills. The staff frequently attends field trips to vocational locations, such as Le Cordon Bleu where the students were exposed to different career paths. “If someone doesn’t help these kids it’s not just them who suffer, we all suffer as a community, as a society and as a country,” said Marino. An on-staff psychologist addresses each student’s character and self-esteem development. Counselors and tutors must maintain a minimum equivalent of a state certification in teaching and a Jessica Lunsford level two background check. Tests are administered to incoming students to determine their academic and social strengths and weaknesses. A comprehensive Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is then developed to address each case. In many instances, counselors act as educational surrogates and advocate for the students within the Miami-Dade County School System working closely with their teachers and guidance

counselors. Foster parents and guardians are provided with periodic reports in their preferred language to keep them abreast of their child’s development and progress. “We were very humbled by Miami Lakes Councilmember Frank Mingo who worked to fund the entire summer program,” said Marino. “And truly appreciative of Roberto and Alexandra Alonso who allow us to work out of their Adult Day Care Center in Miami Lakes twice a week to meet the needs of these kids.” The program currently serves approximately 25 students and plans on expanding in the fall to accomodate 50. All services are provided at no cost to qualifying individuals. “This is an open invitation to any parent or guardian going through a crisis situation, and I want you to know we are here in Miami Lakes ready to help. We will advocate for your child at their school, especially for guardians who may not speak English,” said Marino For more information on the program contact Marino via email at pmarino@guardianwatchflorida.org or visit their web site at www.guardianwatchflorida.org.

Independent Zip Code for Miami Lakes added to Postal Service Reform Act The Town of Miami Lakes may finally get its own zip code. The Town Council, led by Councilmember Manny Cid, has continued to fight for the past three years with the U.S. Postal Service for a Zip Code that is unique to Miami Lakes. U.S. Congressman Mario DiazBalart added the Miami Lakes Zip Code language to the Postal Service Reform Act of 2016 requiring the U.S. Postal Service to designate an independent zip code no later than September 30, 2017. The Postal Service Act of 2016 a bipartisan bill sponsored by Congressman Jason Chaffetz (RUtah), chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD). “This bill reflects how working in a bipartisan, collaborative manner can bring about much needed

reform,” said Chaffetz. “The outlook for the Postal Service is grim without the improvements contained in this bill. I hope the legislation sees quick action by the full House so the Postal Service can be one step closer to a viable, solvent future.” Cid, who spearheaded the zip code initiative, said Diaz-Balart helped the town to accomplish a goal set 10 years ago. "Thanks to our good friend, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, Miami Lakes is at the goal-line of finally obtaining its own Zip Code," said Cid. "An independent Miami Lakes Zip Code will help reduce our residents’ auto insurance premiums, assist with economic development, and the branding of our town," Cid said. The bill is currently scheduled to be heard on the House Floor in the Fall.

Council calls for code change to expedite JetStream Federal Credit Union announces appointments building permits prior to plat recording The Miami Laker staff To help expedite developers’ building projects and simultaneously create more tax revenue, the Miami Lakes Town Council has drafted an ordinance to change the land development code to allow property owners to pull a building permit before their final plats are recorded. The legislation, proposed by Councilmember Tony Lama at last week’s regular meeting, would benefit Lennar Homes Corporation, The Graham Companies and other developers with building plans in the town’s pipeline, who

have to wait for many months to record their final plats by the county’s Clerk of the Court before they can pull building permits and commence construction. Developers must provide Miami Lakes proof that their cadastral maps were on record in order to pull a building permit following approval first by the town and then Miami-Dade County. Recording a final plat can take months or even a year, town officials indicated. The proposed ordinance, which is scheduled to be introduced at the September regular meeting,

would eliminate the recording requirement, which is the final step to give developers the green light to start building their residential, commercial and industrial facilities. The Town Council already approved Lennar Homes’ plans to build about 480 single-family and town homes on land west of N.W. 87 Avenue along 154 Street, but the proposal is still waiting for county approval, Town Manager Alex Rey said. All Art Picture and Framing hosts ‘Fusion Art Day’ on August 13 All Art Picture and Framing located at 15505 Bull Run Road will be celebrating the “Fusion Art Day” with a special gallery night event showcasing the art work of Laura Domine Buscató, Spanish Realistic painter and Miguel Payami abstract expressionist acrylic and colored pencil paintings of Dominican Republic. The event is set for August 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Uruguay native, Buscató, began demonstrating her artistic ability in Venezuela in the early 90’s and attends classes at The Workshop Studio A. Pavon Visual Arts. She immigrated to Madrid in late 90’s where she continued her career as a painter. She later attended classes at The Prado Workshop Studios with the Spanish painter Pablo Santibañez Servat. She has participated in different group exhibitions, including the exposure of Students Academy Workshop Prado in 2014, Gurugú Center in Guadarrama, Congress

Spain Art Open House, and in 2015 the exhibition of painting Madrid and Valencian painting in the Hall of the Auditorium of Arroyomolinos. Payami, the abstract expressionist acrylic, and colored pencil paintings artist, creates canvases full of energy and movement and replete with human emotion. In his artistic process, Payami uses a spatula, brush, and other instruments to lay the paint thickly onto the canvas, resulting in multidimensional and highly textured images, where broad swaths of color are juxtaposed with fine lines and often delicate forms. A hallmark of Payami’s work is his use of color, which is inspired by his home in the Dominican Republic – colors that are tropical and breathing, with lots of life. Central to Payami’s work is the texture he creates on the canvas, providing depth which in turn imparts much of the emotionality and meaning contained within each image.

Payami said, “I need the texture because it represents me, it empowers me. All the detail, the combination of the color with the texture... it’s energy. It’s explosive and it lives in me until I get it out on canvas.” Payami currently lives and works in Miami. In Memoriam:

Bonnie Mandich, widow of Jim ‘Mad Dog’ Mandich Bonnie Mandich, the wife of Jim Mandich, former Miami Dolphins tight end and the team’s play-by-play radio announcer, died last month in Miami Lakes. She was 61. According to reports, Mandich died in her sleep from natural causes on Monday, July 11. She was born on December 13, 1954 in Spring Lake, New Jersey to Richard and Peggy Height. A beautiful woman, she was asked to be Miss Vermont in college. She was an accomplished equestrian that competed in hunter and jumper competitions through-

out her life. She loved animals having many cats and horses. After she moved to Miami, Bonnie Mandich attended a game at the Orange Bowl, where she first met Jim and the two later started dating. They tied the knot in 1981. When Jim Mandich retired from pro football, he became the Dolphins’ announcer for WQAM (560-AM) and WIOD (610-AM), where fans could hear his famous catch phrase “Awwwright Miami” each time the Dolphins scored a touchdown or made a big play. In addition to his broadcasting

career, Mandich opened a restaurant, Ziggie and Mad Dog’s in Islamorada, and ran a drywall contracting company with his wife workBONNIE ing alongside MANDICH him. Bonnie Mandich also helped her husband create the Dolphins’ Cancer Challenge, which includes cycling and golf events, to raise money for the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer

Center. She served on the board of directors. Following her husband’s death in 2011 from bile duct cancer, Bonnie Mandich continued his crusade for the Cancer Challenge, and in February, it raised more than $5 million, according to its website. Since 2010, the Cancer Challenge has raised a total of $16.5 million. After her husband’s death, Bonnie Mandich and the couple’s children accepted his honor when

July Town Council meeting summary (Continued from Page 11) would help land owners and pump money in the town’s budget at a faster pace. “It would allow them to pull a permit faster and the monies would come to the town faster,” he said. Vice Mayor Tim Daubert and Councilmembers Frank Mingo and Nelson Rodriguez backed Lama’s proposal, while Mayor Michael Pizzi and Manny Cid cast the dissenting votes. Councilmember Ceasar Mestre was absent. Pizzi said he could not support a change in the land development code that would benefit one developer, Lennar Homes Corporation. “My concern is, are we doing this to assist a developer to speed up his construction?” Pizzi asked. “The developer has millions of dollars investment but changing

the rules to benefit Lennar and not other developers I can’t support.” Lama defended his legislation which he said would help any developer in Miami Lakes speed up their building schedules, including the Main Street redevelopment project by The Graham Companies. He disputed an accusation that he was for sale. “I take it seriously when people throw comments like that at me or my colleagues,” said Lama, who’s up for reelection in November. “This topic came up at our last council meeting on talks to accelerate this matter of building permits and accelerate money to come to the town. I am not for sale and I don’t throw money around to buy council seats.” Cid, who’s running for mayor, said the town should explore other ways instead of touching the town’s code, including urging the county to create a system to expedite the recording process. “I am not comfortable changing the code,” he said. Rodriguez, who is also running for reelection, said a simple move has turned into a political hot potato. “The town already approved the plat and waiting for the county’s approval,” he said. “I approved the mobility fee and didn’t care if it benefited Lennar or anyone else.” In other Town Council news: • Lawmakers tabled an ordinance to amend the town’s sign code to reflect a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling to provide better organization and clarity and address sign types that are currently not addressed. For temporary signs, including political and real estate signage, the town dramatically simplified the proposed regulation of temporary signs on RU-zoned residential properties, such that two temporary signs may be displayed at all times, at a maximum size of 22 inches by 28 inches. According to Town Manager Alex Rey and Town Attorney Raul Gastesi, since it’s an election sea-

son, illegal political signs under the town’s code that are enforced can be challenged in the court and the town most likely would lose under the SCOTUS recent ruling. For example, a resident can place more than five signs in his/her yard which is a violation of the town’s land development code but can be challenged in the lower court. Mayor Michael Pizzi suggested tabling the issue to get input from residents and homeowners associations on the maximum number of signs allowed on a property. • Lawmakers gave their final approve for legislation to amend the town’s comprehensive plan to include the results of the transportation planning efforts, including commute trip reduction plan for the greenways and trails master plan, the ADA sidewalk master plan and the alternative to concurrency study, which replaced the town’s old traffic program with a mobility fee. • Council members approved a resolution that requests MiamiDade County provide an ALS transport unit for Miami Lakes West fire station 64. The county only had enough money in the budget for a fire truck at the new Miami Lakes station, and Station One at Ludlam Road near the Palmetto Expressway responds to medical emergencies as well as the fire stations on Miami Gardens Drive and in Hialeah Gardens. Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter, said the transport unit is very vital since the town’s traffic, development and population have increased and it takes too long for them to respond to medical emergencies. In a related matter, council members approved Cid’s suggestion to direct town staff to engage Miami-Dade on the issue of collecting fire impact fees. He said with new developments in the town, he wants to ensure the money stays in the town for a ALS transport vehicle at Station 64.

the Dolphins posthumously inducted him into the team’s Honor Roll at Dolphins Stadium. Bonnie Mandich is survived by her sons Michael, Mark and Nick, grandson Thomas and brother Rick Height. The Mandich family has asked that donations be made to the Dolphins Cancer Challenge in her honor at 347 Don Shula Drive, Miami Gardens, Florida 33056 or visit www.dolphinschallenge.com.

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff The father of Barbara Goleman High recent graduate, Michael Avendano, told his son that playing baseball would land him a college scholarship someday. After heeding his father’s advice, Avendano is headed to Barry University to resume his career in the college ranks and conceivably play Major League Baseball. Avendano is the latest Roland Gomez Scholarship award winner from the Miami Lakes Optimist Club who’s going off to college in the fall. He won the award as an 8thgrade student at Miami Lakes K-8 Center, but the winners don’t receive their $1,000 check until they enroll into a college or university. The former Gator infielder played baseball for Goleman and

the Optimist Club’s recreation and travel teams. As a junior at Goleman, Avendano hit .426 with 21 RBI, 29 hits and five doubles, earning him a spot on The Miami Herald’s AllDade Team. The Gators won the district championship and beat Colorado’s Fairview and Broward’s Douglas, the top two teams in the country, to win the Spring Break tournament. As a senior, Avendano batted .394 with 27 RBI, 28 hits, six doubles and one home run, helping the Gators win their third consecutive district championship. He said his dad was his biggest inspiration and taught him everything he knew about the game of baseball. “He showed me the game and I enjoyed playing it with my teammates,” Avendano said. “I like the competition and playing with a team because it’s a team sport. He

said baseball would get me a scholarship.” Avendano was recruited by several colleges including Division 1A Mississippi’s Jackson State University and 2015 NAIA College World Series runner-up St. Thomas University, but he chose to stay home and accepted the offer by Barry University. “The school is great academically and athletically, the baseball program is great,” he said. “The school showed great interest in me and I can achieve my goals academically and athletically. Barry University is a distinguished university.” Avendano, who graduated high school with a 4.4 GPA, said he plans to study nursing in college. He said his dad and coaches, Luis Arrogas at the Optimist Club and Jose Lopez and Dario Martinez at Goleman, helped mold him into the player he is today.

M-Dade Schools win inaugural NAF 2015-16 President’s Award Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) recently won the National Academy Foundation’s inaugural 2015-16 President’s Award at the NAF’s national conference in Orlando where 1,500 members of the audience witnessed the crowning achievement of arguably the best school district in the nation. The prize, the highest national award for choice districts, honors M-DCP’s outstanding work in preparing students to be college and career ready upon graduation. The NAF, a national network of education, business and community leaders who work together to ensure high-school students are meticulously prepared for college and their careers, presented the award to Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “Miami-Dade County Public Schools is once again being recognized as a leader in student achievement,” said Carvalho.

“NAF career academy programs have provided our students with opportunities to engage with business and industry leaders, giving them priceless experience that will help position them for college and career success.” NAF president JD Hoye noted that a visit to Miami last June, “made it crystal clear that your district is on the forefront of career education and you are truly preparing your students to be the future innovators and leaders of companies across this country and world.” M-DCPS has exemplified significant strategic commitment and investment to NAF academies and student enrollment goals, a strong demonstration to NAF model and outstanding leadership capacity within the network. The award comes with a $5,000 prize for the District’s continued work in career education. The latest national recognition

for Miami-Dade Schools is a reflection of the hard work teachers, parents and community leaders in the Miami Lakes area in preparing students for their future. The Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board makes sure students who attend Miami Lakes K8 Center, Bob Graham Education Center, Miami Lakes Middle School, Barbara Goleman and Hialeah Miami Lakes high schools reach their full potential of learning to help prepare them for high school and succeed in college. But one man has been the back bone for the success of the nation’s fourth largest school district. Carvalho, who took over the helm of superintendent in 2008, leads by example, winning numerous of national awards, including being named the country’s top schools chief in 2014, recognizing him for his continuous efforts to help 350,000 students earn good marks in the classrooms. He was also named Magnet Schools of America Superintendent of the Year in May, and received the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award in 2014. advertising

M-Dade Schools add CPR training as a Personal Fitness graduation requirement As part of a newly strengthened wellness policy, the School Board of Miami-Dade County voted to incorporate Hands-Only Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation CPR training for all students who take Personal Fitness as part of their graduation requirements. This will create new generations of lifesavers by preparing them to respond to sudden cardiac arrest, whose victims usually die before Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) arrive because CPR was not administered. The American Heart Association (AHA) has been encouraging schools districts, such as Miami-Dade, to adopt CPR as part of their current policies making instruction stronger and more sustainable. MiamiDade County embraced the opportunity and has provided leadership for others to follow.

Miami Dade County is home of the largest school district in the state of Florida, and is now the first county in the state to require students to learn Hands-Only CPR through a required course before they graduate high school. There are 34 states in the country that require CPR in Schools, but Florida is not one of them. The AHA hopes this landmark decision will inspire other counties to follow suit and create policies of their own. In just one hour of students’ four-year high school career, this policy will provide the skills they need to help save lives – the lives of families, neighbors and friends. Students can learn these life-saving skills in the time it takes to watch one TV show. M-DCPS trains their senior high school physical education teachers as CPR instructors.

and developing this project, it brings me great joy to say it is finally done,” said Celia Rouco, Pace's director of Development. The Pace administration believes in constantly bettering the Home of the Spartans. Academic standards, extracurricular activities, and sports for students are all high priorities, but the whole package comes together with the facilities. The remodeling of the Pace Plaza is a project that aims to beautify and modernize a very central location loved by all students. The Pace Student Plaza remodeling is part of the Development Office “Brick Project”. Its main purpose is to keep the legacy of the thousands of Pace alumni as an integral part of the campus as well

as giving the past graduates the opportunity to give back to their school and assure that Msgr. Edward Pace High School will continue its mission of excellence in Catholic education. Students, families, faculty, and alumni of Pace can buy their own brick for only $125. Buyers have the choice of personalizing these special bricks with their own message, the name and year of a graduate or family member expressing their Spartan pride, or a congratulatory note for a teacher, an activity, or sporting event. Miami Lakes Education Center introduces new school uniforms By Maria Vasquez Special to The Miami Laker Miami Lakes Educational Center’s administration is implementing new school shirts with hopes to unite all the academies at MLEC. The shirts were designed by WunderThought, a company created by Cambridge and Health Seniors, Sebastian Salas and Erick Rivera. The shirts will be predominantly black with white patches and will have the school’s logo as a patch on the left chest. The school’s logo was designed by Digital Arts students at MLEC. “When I first arrived at MLEC, it struck me that there was no single shirt that all students could wear,” said principal Lourdes Diaz when asked about how the new uniform idea originated.

“Very often, we participate in activities that transcend academies, yet there was no way for us to identify ourselves as one school. So, I took this observation to the EESAC, and we began the process of reviewing and streamlining the uniform policy,” said Diaz. After several months of discussion and presentations to the EESAC, the updated uniform policy includes one black and white “Jaguar” polo that all students can wear, one color polo for each academy, and industry uniforms (e.g., scrubs) where applicable. In addition, Fridays will be designated school spirit days, and students will be allowed to wear any MLEC t-shirt or polo,” added Diaz. Diaz also addressed the rumor

Sabrina Gonzalez’s non-profit raises funds for autistic youth Long before Sabrina Gonzalez won The Miami Herald’s 2016 Sliver Knight in the Vocational Technical category for MiamiDade in May, the former Mater Lakes Academy student was part of the school’s Early Childhood Education program where she grew fond of a special student. Adrian was stricken with autism and a student of Cub Academy, an on-site pre-school that is part of the early childhood curriculum, when Gonzalez met him and his family. She formed a bond with Adrian

and his family, and after he finished pre-school, Sabrina wanted to help his parents and others pay for costs for enrolling them into another school. Gonzalez started a non-profit called Heroes Miami in 2014 for families with children with autism to assist them financially to cover some of the expenses. Gonzalez has raised more than $7,000 through a series of fundraisers and has helped parents afford the special care their sons and daughters need to get them through school.

that administration was planning on adding uniform bottoms and taking away jeans. She states that “no changes were made to the uniform “bottoms.” Some students, however, were not entirely happy with the new outfit changes and they do not think they will bring unity to the school. “You’re going to be divided anyways because in the bottom it says that if you’re in health, you have to wear your scrubs and red shirt only. Since you can’t find those style shirts anywhere like you can find a plain white collared shirt, it will be more expensive for parents,” said Bialma Corona, a freshman in Child Care. Some people also believe that the shirts are an inconvenience to parents who have already spent money on shirts for their child for the following year. Students also expressed unhappiness about how entrepreneurship will be green instead of burgundy. “A few of my friends are coming to this school and they were really excited especially because at this school you are given the freedom to choose between different shirt choices in the strand that you are in as well as wear jeans. We want that freedom to express ourselves,” said Corona.

Miami-Dade Schools holds annual Synergy event at Jackson Senior High School

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ annual Synergy Summer Institute program was held at Miami Jackson Senior High School during the last weeks of July for all schools in Dade County. Synergy is an academic support program that strives to strengthen MDCPS through resources for school administration and faculty like tailored workshops focused on 21st century learning. “Digital Fluency” is encouraged as a skill for students to thrive in a technology-focused world. Miami Lakes Educational Center principal, Lourdes Diaz, (pictured) points to one of the signs at the event that reads: “Teachers need to integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum instead of viewing it as an add-on, an afterthought, or an event” by Heidi-Hayes Jacobs.

Beacon Council, JPMorgan Chase contribute $30K to M-D College The Beacon Council, through JPMorgan Chase, recently contributed $30,000 to Miami-Dade College’s Idea Center to be used to create Webdev, a new course that allows participants to learn from the ground up on how to build responsive websites in eight weeks. The new class was launched on July 19. “By the year 2020, more than 60 percent of managerial positions will require coding as a skill,” said Idea Center’s executive director Leandro Finol. “Webdev is a great chance for anybody to take a first step into the coding world.” The contribution is part of JPMorgan Chase’s New Skills at Work, a five-year $250 million global initiative to leverage resources, expertise, and global reach to help inform and accelerate efforts to support demanddriven skills training for adult. In addition, JP Morgan Chase launched a program to expand skills-based education for young people. New Skills for Youth is a $75 million program to help solve the youth unemployment crisis. Participants in Webdev will learn HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to become fully capable of creating a responsive website, freelance as a web developer or boost their marketing and design skills in their professional careers. The eight-week program will run through September with classes meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
