By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Two incumbents were automatically reelected to the Miami Lakes Town Council when they ran unopposed and won another four-year term, while a third office holder must hit the campaign trial to keep his seat. Tim Daubert (Seat 2) and Frank Mingo (Seat 4) drew no challengers following the end of the town’s qualifying period, which ended last week for the November 4 general election. However, political neophyte Xiomara Pazos is challenging Seat 6 Councilmember Ceasar Mestre, who has served as the town’s vice mayor and acting mayor until voters chose Wayne Slaton in a special election last year. Governor Rick Scott suspended Mayor Michael Pizzi following his arrest last August on corruption and bribery charges. Pizzi is cur-

rently standing trail. Mingo, 54, won his seat during the special election to finish out the term of former Councilmember Nelson Hernandez, who resigned to run for mayor. Mingo has resided in Miami Lakes since 1986 and lives with his wife, Carmenchu, of 31 years in the Silvercrest North neighborhood. He is a supply chain manager for the Miami Lakes based Oliva Cigar Company. Before he became an elected official, Mingo served on the Miami Lakes Economic Development Committee, Miami Lakes Police Department Review committee and as president of the Silvercrest North Homeowners Association. Mingo and his wife have two children. Daubert, 56, first won his seat in 2010 when he defeated then-

councilmember George Lopez, who was appointed to Seat 2. Daubert, who has been living in Miami Lakes for 20 years, said he was honored and humbled to run unopposed and is looking forward to serving Miami Lakes for another four years. “I truly love serving the residents and businesses of the Town of Miami Lakes,” said the import accounts manager. “I can’t say how humbled I am and honored to be reelected to the Town Council.” Daubert, a retired U.S. Marine Corps military policeman, said he will focus on fiscal accountability to ensure taxpayer’s hard earned money is spent responsibly, improving the town’s parks and recreation facilities and local traffic conditions, and support strong community policing and public safety measures.

Value Store It working on plan for boat/truck storage lot By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff For Miami Lakes residents who can’t keep their boats, recreational and commercial vehicles out of plain view on their properties, the town and a storage company are working on a long term solution to help them comply with the town’s code. Town officials and Value Store It Company have been putting together a plan, which would also include an agreement from an individual who is leasing property from Miami-Dade Aviation Department located near Opalocka Airport to allow the company to operate a private storage facility. Carlos Diaz, vice president and general manager of Value Store It, told The Miami Laker his compa-

A Look Inside:

ny is developing a site plan for the property, which includes a facility to store about 120 boats and vehicles for Miami Lakes residents at a 20 percent discount rate. The area would be fully equipped with cameras to prevent thefts, burglaries and vandalism. “Miami Lakes residents only would get a preferred rate,” Diaz said. “People living outside of Miami Lakes would pay the regular rate.” Diaz said Miami Lakes reached out to his company to help find a suitable location for residents to store their boats and recreational vehicles. He said the airport location was the best option and Value Store It can operate the private storage facility.

Daubert is married to Caridad and they have a young daughter, Ashley. Mestre, 52, was first elected to the Town Council in 2010, when he defeated then-incumbent Nancy Simon. He was elected as vice mayor in 2011, 2012 and 2013 by a unanimous vote. He is a native of New York and a graduate of St. Thomas University. He earned his law degree from University of Miami’s School of Law. Before attending law school, Mestre was a South Florida police officer and special investigations detective. He has been living in Miami Lakes for the past 22 years, where he and his wife have raised three daughters. He has actively participated in community services and activities, including as a member of the executive board for the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce, Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee, Sevilla Estates Park Committee, co-chairman for Cancer Relay for Life, Police Department Review Committee, Miami Lakes Bar Association and past president Royal Palm Estates Homeowners Association. Pazos is CEO and president of Professional Medical Transportation Corporation in Hialeah. Pazos, 57, said she chose to live in Miami Lakes because it is one

of the best communities in MiamiDade to raise a family. She said it’s time for Miami Lakes to expect more from their elected officials and town leaders. “More leadership, more substance and more solutions,” Pazos said. “For me, you can expect more cooperation, more action and positive changes, more responsiveness to residents’ ideas and more integrity and honor.” Pazos is a past vice president of the Serenity Pointe Homeowners Association. She graduated from Hialeah Miami Lakes High School in 1976 and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Miami-Dade College. In 1992, she began working at Vitas Hospice and was commended for service in Patient Care. She founded Professional Medical Transportation Corporation in 1996, which is a non-emergency medical transportation company, serving people in MiamiDade and Broward counties. So far, Pazos has mustered $2,250 for her campaign to Mestre’s $1,250. Even thought they drew no challengers, Mingo created a war chest of $9,475 for a small-town election and Daubert raised $3,335 in campaign contributions.

Proposed boat/commercial truck storage lot could solve code problems for residents (Continued from Page 1) Diaz said it should be up and running in the next four to six months. “The town reached out to us and we suggested the site because it’s more appropriate and a close location for Miami Lakes residents,” Diaz said. “We are currently working with the town to put together all the necessary parts to open the facility.” Value Store It, which has been in business for 10 years, operates similar storage locations throughout South Florida, Diaz said. The airport site seems to be the best option for a storage facility after Miami Lakes initially proposed in March an area near 14501 N.W. 77 Avenue, which belongs to FPL. Residents said a storage facility at that location would bring down property values and attract more loitering. Vice Mayor Manny Cid, who’s spearheading the initiative, asked

his colleagues to create a factfinding committee to find other locations more suitable for residents to store their watercraft and vehicles. After a Town Council workshop to study alternatives for storage location and use, Miami Lakes and Value Store It began working together to secure the airfield site. A storage facility would help Miami Lakes with a code compliance problem that has seen a total of $1 million in fines and violations since incorporation in 2000. When the town adopted its new land development code, it grandfathered in boats that were stored in garages or parked on the side of their homes. But when the grandfathering period expired, about 2,841 violations were handed for unsuitable parking watercraft and recreational vehicles and trailers. Residents were encouraged to apply for a variance to keep their boats and vehicles.

Town of Miami Lakes Budget Workshop scheduled at Town Hall on Tuesday, August 26 The Miami Laker staff In a prelude to the September budget hearings, Miami Lakes councilmembers will discuss the proposed budget for 2014-2015 during a workshop, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 26 at Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. Councilmembers will discuss keeping the same tax rate of 2.3581 or possibly reducing it during the budget hearings. The rate is projected to generate $5.7 million in ad valorem taxes along with additional revenues to help offset the rising cost of services. The town’s proposed $15.8 million spending plan calls for $7.2 million for police services stemming from pay raises, the elimination of the contribution to health care and an increase for fuel and overhead costs. Miami Lakes’ general fund balance is estimated at $4 million, in which 15 percent of the fund, $2.3 million, is required to be placed in emergency reserve, and an additional $500,000 reserved for hurricane emergencies. Beautification remains a top priority for Miami Lakes, as town officials allocated money for

upgrading the town’s gateway features and erecting a new entrance sign at N.W. 67th and 138 Street. Miami Lakes is projecting to receive more than $350,000 in addition revenues mostly from property taxes, utilities and intergovernmental, as estimated by the town. Property taxes show a $150,000 increase from the current fiscal year added to slight increases from franchise and utility taxes, business license and permit fees, state revenue sharing, half-cent sales tax and user fees for services, fines and interest income. The Intergovernmental revenue estimates reflect an increase of $210,000 from 2014-2015. The additional revenues would be used to offset the increases of services due to the town’s growing population and demand for improved municipal services. The town’s building department and code enforcement expenses increased by $120,000, which is needed for more hours for inspectors and an additional full-time clerk to handle the increase in demand. The increase in permit activity is consistent with the trend in increased property values.

Duysevi “Sevi” Miyar, a longtime educator who was born in Istanbul, Turkey, is challenging incumbent School Board Chairwoman Perla Tabares-Hantman for her District 4 Seat, that covers Miami Lakes, Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens and some unincorporated areas. Hantman was first elected to the School Board in 1996, representing District 4 and in 1998 and 2002 was re-elected to four-year terms without opposition. Hantman was re-elected in 2006 and in 2010 and is currently serving her fifth term in office. In November of 2010, 2011, 2012 and again in 2013, Hantman was elected chair of the MiamiDade County School Board, a leadership position she had held before. Hantman was first nominated and unanimously elected chair in 1999, becoming the first Hispanic woman to serve in that position. In 2000 and 2001 she

was re-elected and served a second and third consecutive term as chair. Hantman has also served as vice chairman, having been elected to that position in November 2005, 2007 and 2009. Hantman was born in Havana, Cuba, where she completed high school and attended the University of Havana. Due to political circumstances, she was forced to emigrate to the United States and continued her education at Barry University in Miami, Florida. Her career in public service began with the Cuban Refugee Program of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Later, she joined the United States Foreign Service assigned by the Department of State to the American Embassy in Mexico City. Miyar, 46, has been a teacher for 19 years. She said she’s running because she wants to bring an educator’s perspective to the school board. “It’s time for teachers to make a difference,” she said. She said the school education system needs a reform to help students succeed in the state mandated FCAT, and she wants to bring alertness to the changes needed to compete with other districts in the nation such as New York City Department of Education, Los Angeles Unified School District and Chicago Public Schools. “Being a teacher and parent in the system, I understand the challenges and the needs faced by our parents, teachers and children,”

PERLA T. HANTMAN she said. “It is time to transform the future of our children and give them back the quality of education they deserve and give teachers and parents the respect and empowerment they deserve.” Miyar has been an educator ever since she arrived from Turkey. She attended high school at the American School of Kuwait and holds a bachelors degree in Education from Istanbul University. She is a doctoral student in the Educational Technology program at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. She is currently a high school language arts teacher for the English for Speakers of Other Languages or (ESOL) department and as the Educational Excellence School Advisor Committee (EESAC) chairperson at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School. He’s a business development leader for CAC Florida Medical Center. Gonzalez earned his degree in business management and administration from Miami-Dade College. DID YOU KNOW? Did you know the Town of Miami Lakes has ordinances in the Land Development Code which regulates the location and height of hedges on non-zero-lot-line residential dry and lakefront lots? On dry lots, hedges: 1. Must be set back 25-feet from the front property line (usually the edge of the sidewalk); 2. Must be trimmed to a maximum height of 6-feet; 3. Facing arterial or collector roadways shall have a maximum height of 10-feet; 4. Facing state roadways have no height limit, but must be maintained neat and trimmed; and

5. No hedge shall be planted outside of the property lot lines. There are additional restrictions on lakefront lots designed to protect the access to, and views of, the lake from neighboring properties. A partial list of these rules include: 1. No hedge or plant groupings shall exceed two and one-half feet in height waterward of the top of the slope. 2. Hedges along the side property lines shall not be permitted within 10-feet of the water’s edge as defined as the average high groundwater elevation. 3. In addition, fences, walls or rocks arranged to form a fence or wall, or objects which restrict

access or block view from adjacent properties, are not permitted beyond the top of the slope toward the lake, or waterside of the survey tie line. 4. All existing hedges that do not comply with the above regulations shall either be removed, if no longer permitted, or trimmed to comply with the maximum height requirements. In general, be a good neighbor and keep your hedges trimmed to the height allowed for privacy, but not to restrict your neighbor’s views, light and air. Let’s keep Miami Lakes Growing Beautifully.

all we can to protect our 32 lakes. This event was about educating our residents on how we each can play a role in the maintenance of our lakes.” The mission of the Town’s NIC is to recommend, promote, and create projects and activities that will beautify and improve all neighborhoods in a collaborative and comprehensive manner. the top 10 most produced playwrights in the U.S. ranked right after the famed Tennessee Williams. Becky’s New Car has been produced over 100 times throughout the U.S., and the Staadeckers have seen it enough times to recite it by heart. Various actors have given life to the characters, and each nuanced performance is in itself a new experience for the Staadeckers to witness. “We've seen it in Minneapolis, Venice Beach, Kansas City and many other places. It's a party trick, I can just perform the entire play on my own at this point,” said Benita with a smile. Despite their commissioning the play, and their love for it, it is not an autobiographical piece. “This play is not about us," said Charlie. Charlie said in his 30 year marriage with Benita, there have only been two difficult moments – the first was when his wife insisted they see Wayne Newton in concert while visiting Las Vegas, and the

second was a pumpkin carving that Charlie had no interested in attending. The latter would prove to be life-changing. At the pumpkin carving Benita met Sandra Crowder, who had recently commissioned a tuba concerto and was concerned no one would show. “I told her not to worry, Charlie and I would go and we would tell all our friends,” said Benita. “Turns out it was an amazing evening, and the hall was packed.” A few months passed and Charlie was keen to give Benita a “major” gift for her upcoming 60th birthday. Thinking back to their experience at the tuba concerto, Charlie decided to commission a play for Benita’s gift. The artistic directors of Act Theater in Seattle were thrilled when Charlie walked in, ready to commission. Though commissioning plays often comes with caveats, such as not being autobiographical, Charlie was not turned off to the idea. “We tell people who are interested in doing this ‘let the professionals work in what they do best’,” said Charlie. “Our job was to write a check and get out of the way. We did just that and we believe very much that between the art director and the playwright, Steven Dietz, the play flowed very well because it was what Dietz wanted to write, not because of what anyone else had in mind.” Plays are typically commissioned by large organizations though there is a population of individuals who act as commissioners as well. Benita considers

We are rich in health and we have worked hard and spent our money wisely, and the truth is you can commission a play for less than the price of a car. People in the renaissance commissioned pieces of art and plays all the time. Some of Shakespeare's plays were commissioned! Of course, those were made by the queen, but many others were made possible because of regular people.” The Staadeckers saw the first reading of their play 18 months after Benita's birthday but it was well worth the wait. Despite giving free reign to the artistic director and the playright Dietz, the Staadeckers were not disappointed in the final product titled Becky’s New Car. “Benita describes it best when she says that Becky’s New Car is a very serious play wrapped in the exterior of a comedy. There are important crossroads that every

family faces, and Becky has some difficult choices to make but it’s done in a very easygoing way,” said Charlie. In 2008, Becky’s New Car was ranked as one of the top 6 plays out of New York City, which led to meaningful connections for the Staadeckers and others interested in commissioning. “We became somewhat evangelical about this,” said Charlie. “There are no guarantees with this,” added Benita. “You may get a good play or a bad one. But if nothing else, I hope people know that it’s worth the risk. To bring another piece of theater that reflects something about our culture, that speaks to what is going on in the world, it’s absolutely worth the risk.” In a world where the arts are the first to get cut from budgets, the Staadeckers feel responsible to spread the love of theater and art, believing that art is like “food for the soul.” “We just feel that to be a whole person, there has to be some artistic component. You can’t just go to work, go to school, eat dinner and

It’s human, and it makes us better people,” said Benita. “It was my birthday present,” said Benita with tenderness in her voice. “And it changed our lives. We are continually grateful. It was a great investment and we met many wonderful people through this. In your life, when is this kind of magic going to happen? Anytime someone wants to hear our story we tell it happily. You never know where the ripples will go.” The Mainstreet Players production of Becky’s New Car is in its final weekend at the Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street. The show runs through Sunday,August 17. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online or at the door. Water pressure in Miami Lakes will be impacted to the middle of September due to a Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) project which will repair portions of the 54-inch water main on Red Road (West 4th Avenue) in Hialeah. WASD will shut down the water main and the repairs will be made in stages along Red Road from the Preston Water Treatment Plant located at West 2nd Avenue and West 13th Street, to West 56th

Street. As a result, residents in the Town of Miami Lakes, Hialeah and Opa Locka, will experience lower than normal water pressure during the six-week repair project. These shortages will be noticed most at high-demand usage times like the early morning or later in the evening when the majority of people are taking showers. Five candidates race off in County, Miami Lakes officials Miami-Dade County Property join in grand opening event Appraiser’s Office election for Springview Academy (Continued from Page 4) and during the last 23 years, has operated Armada Appraisal & Consulting Company, appraising commercial and residential properties. Previously he served in government for 20 years; the last 11 as the City of Miami’s property and lease manager, managing the real estate portfolio and procuring real estate appraisals. Over the past six years he has served as a Special Magistrate for Miami Dade County’s Valuation Adjustment Board, hearing commercial and residential appeals and seeing firsthand some of the operations of the Property Appraiser’s Office. Dominguez graduated from Coral Gables High School in 1987 and earned his Bachelor’s degree in finance and international business from Florida International University. He earned his Masters in public administration from Barry University. Dominguez is touting his extensive experience in the private sector as the best candidate for the position, having worked as both a pharmaceutical executive as well as a realtor in the city of Miami for the last 20 years. “My desire is for the Appraiser’s office to be totally independent of the Miami Dade County Commissioners going forward,” he said. “This will enable the appraisers office to give all our homeowners an honest and accurate property appraisal going forward free from political intrusion.” Garcia was the property appraiser from 2008 to 2010. He became Miami-Dade’s first elected property appraiser, previously the position was appointed.

In 2010, Garcia narrowly lost to challenger Lopez-Cantera, who at the time was the outgoing majority leader of the state House of Representatives. Garcia said he cut more than $60 billion off property values and is taking claim for a recent uptake in identifying homestead exemption fraud. Garcia headed PJ Garcia Appraisal Services for many years. Gobel was born in Miami, where he attended Christopher Columbus High School and later received his bachelor degrees in real estate and finance from Florida International University, and obtained his MBA from the University of Florida. He is currently the executive director of a valuation and consulting firm that services the South Florida real estate market. Prior to founding his own firm, Gobel served as residential director and principal and managing director at two other South Florida appraisal firms. Gobel has vast real estate valuation and consulting experience that includes valuing vacant land, single family residences, manufactured homes, condominiums, co-operatives, multi-million dollar residences, 2- to 4-unit multi-family dwellings, office and apartment buildings, warehouses, and retail centers. Gobel has completed, reviewed, supervised, or consulted on over 8,000 assignments, representing more than $3 billion in South Florida real estate. The property appraiser’s office oversees a 371-person office with an annual budget of more than $30 million.

Do you know your Zone? Run from the Water and Hide from the Wind! Powerful winds aren’t the only deadly force during a hurricane. The greatest threat to life actually comes from the water – in the form of storm surge. For that reason, it’s vital for Miami-Dade County residents to be aware a storm surge happens when water from the ocean is pushed on shore by the strong winds in tropical storms or hurricanes. Storm surges are the main reason why Miami-Dade residents are told to evacuate prior to a hurricane event. Due to its hazardous potential, the Miami-Dade Office of Emergency Management has mapped out Storm Surge Planning Zones in distinct areas where storm surge poses grave danger; thus, it’s important for residents to know what zone their property is located. Storm surge zones are determined by the National Hurricane Center using ground elevation and the surrounding area’s vulnerability to water from lakes or oceans being pushed onto land. In some cases, a property may not be located in a storm surge planning zone, but it’s important to verify. Planning zones are broken

down into five sections with the letters A-E which are used to identify the risk of storm surge and is based on all directions of storms. For instance, if a category 3 hurricane is projected to make landfall in Miami-Dade County, then residents living in Zones A, B and C will be cautioned to make preparations for evacuation. Depending upon the projection of the hurricane, the County will then specify if particular areas in the zone, or the entire zone, will need to evacuate. The following describes each planning zone: • Zone A: At risk for storm surge for category 1 hurricanes and higher storms. • Zone B: At risk for storm surge for category 2 hurricanes and higher storms. • Zone C: At risk for storm surge for category 3 hurricanes and higher storms. • Zone D: At risk for storm surge for category 4 hurricanes and higher storms. • Zone E: At risk for storm surge for category 5 hurricanes and higher storms. To find out if your property is located within a Storm Surge Planning Zone, do the following: 1. Go on to www.miamidade. gov/fire/evacuation-zones.asp

The Town of Miami Lakes and Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr.’s office have received numerous complaints from residents over the closure of the intersection of N.W. 87 Avenue and 170 Street. The following is information provided by Miami-Dade Public Works Department: As part of the N.W. 87th Avenue Roadway Improvement Project, the installation of a 36” water main and the replacement of a 47” x 71” culvert crossing for the N.W. 170 Street Canal are required at the intersection of N.W. 87 Avenue and 170 Street. In order to minimize traffic impacts, the intersection work began on June 9 (after the end of the 2013-14 school year), and every effort has been made to complete this work by August 15 (prior to the beginning of the 2014-15 school year).

which provides you with an interactive map where you can enter your address and it will determine if it’s in a planning zone and with links providing additional information on storm surges and evacuations. 2. Call the Miami-Dade Answer Center at 3-1-1, or 3. Call Miami-Dade Emergency Management at 305-4685400. When an evacuation has been announced, the County will use radio, TV stations and the County’s notification system to alert the public. It’s important that residents have a hurricane preparedness plan which includes having a disaster kit with bottled water, gasoline, nonperishable food, blankets and comforters. Residents with pets should have a plan for their pets as well and knowledge of pet-friendly evacuation centers. Remember to be safe and follow guidelines accordingly to reduce the risk of putting yourself and loved ones in danger. For more information on what must be done before, during and after a hurricane, as well as additional hurricane preparedness tips, visit www.miamidade.gov/hurricane.

Unfortunately, due to the inordinate amount of unforeseen underground utility conflicts encountered, the work has been delayed and the opening of the intersection prior to the start of the upcoming school year will not be achieved. As such, and for the continued safety of the public, the existing/ approved Maintenance of Traffic Plan, along with all current detours, will need to remain in place. The current timeline for the opening of this intersection is projected for November 15, excluding any unforeseen conflicts. The Public Works Department apologizes for any inconvenience this delay may cause. Please be assured that the County will continue to work diligently with the contractor to complete this work in the most safe and expeditious manner feasible.

American names Anthony White as Patriots’ new head football coach By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Anthony White knows talent when he sees it. And he knows how to turn gifted players into a championshipwinning team. As Norland’s offensive coordinator in 2012, the offense led by running back Duke Johnson who is now a starter for the Miami

Hurricanes, White helped the Vikings win the state championship. Now White is taking his own talent to American High School. White, 33, was chosen as the Patriots’ new head coach, replacing Corey Bell, who accepted the defensive backs coaching job at Florida Atlantic University. With White’s coaching experience and studying under the tutelage of Daryle Heidelburg, arguably one of the best offensive minds in high-school football for five years, American shouldn’t miss a beat for a team that won back-to-back district titles but failed to win a playoff game in nearly 17 years. The unpretentious White gives all the credit for Norland’s success to his mentor and Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High’s new head coach Horane Allison, who was the running backs coach. “Coach Heidelburg showed me a lot of things,” White said. “He allowed Allison and myself to run the offense with our different niches to make the team a success.” White takes over an American team that on paper is in the running for a third consecutive district championship. The Miami native has yet to pick a starting quarterback but the three players competing for the position give the Patriots the best chance to move the ball down the field. Juniors Joshua Cartwright and Marques Jackson and sophomore

Tyree Bibby look impressive during practices and White said he may choose a starter this week. The starting quarterback will have a depth of on-field body guards to protect him. American is loaded at the running back position with sophomores Jaramari Johnson, Cinque Sweeting and juniors Shammond Williams and Terry Borders. The group of runners will also split time as blocking fullbacks, White said. “The running game is very important to our offense,” said White. “We still have the traditional fullbacks.” The Patriots also have depth at the wide receiver position but the receiving corps is young with Jackson, Anthony Tyler, James Banks and Anthony White Jr., the coach’s 15-year-old son. On defense, American is bringing out what it considers to be among the best group in MiamiDade County, with Jaramari Denson, Caron Jackson, Darrius Rolle, Jamal Smith, and D’Angelo Elms. Before his stint with Norland, White was the quarterbacks coach at Hialeah Miami Lakes and Hialeah High. White said he’s looking forward to facing Allison this season, who he calls a good friend. White said the AmericanHialeah Miami Lakes game is called the Battle of Northwest 67th Avenue.

play helped the tournament operate as a team camp by giving players an opportunity to train and work together. “I think it was a great way to bond together with everyone, said Pace sophomore Alyssa JeanJacques, who believed that communication and teamwork contributed to her team’s win. The following week’s skills clinic complemented these team improvements by helping players build up their individual volleyball skills. The camp was open not only for current Pace volleyball players, but also anyone from the age of 8 to 17. Nearly 30 girls and boys participated and practiced individual skills such as serving, passing, hitting, and blocking. The Pace team players lead younger players in their practices and guided them through drills. Daijah Poole, a freshman at American Senior High who played in the tournament, found that the camp helped her practice even more. “I’m serving better, passing better, hitting the ball [better], and blocking [better], said Poole.

Only four days after their tournament win, the Lady Spartans attended and helped lead an individual volleyball skills clinic held at the school July 28 to July 31. Markia Brown-Seetal, head coach for all of Pace’s volleyball teams, organized the tournament for other high schools in the area to participate. Seven schools entered ten teams into the tournament, with Pace providing a varsity and junior varsity team and North Miami entering three teams. Brown-Seetal says schools like Barbara Goleman Senior High and MAST Academy were happy to participate in the tournament because it gave them an opportunity to see what they needed to work on for the upcoming season. The initiative is funded through the National Partnership grant through the Motorola Solutions Foundation Innovation Generation program to engage youth in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). It is an extension of the “Supporting a Manufacturing Renaissance” efforts. The YMA introduces students entering grades 7 through 9 to all facets of the manufacturing industry. The Academy is part of the “Dream It. Do It” initiative, a national career awareness and outreach campaign designed to promote a positive image of manufacturing that is sponsored by The Manufacturing Institute in Washington, D.C. The primary goal of the program is to grow and develop the manufacturing workforce pipeline in the middle grades, a critical juncture in need of particular attention, with an emphasis on addressing girls and minorities from underserved districts with underachieving students. Activities at the Academy focused on hands-on projects and simulation-based learning. Each activity emphasized developing 21st century skills, like teamwork and communication, needed to prepare students for today's hightech workplace. Participants also engaged in a mock career fair capstone event.

Yearbookpalooza’s workshops focused on every facet and skill necessary to build a yearbook, from photography and copywriting to yearbook design and event coverage. After spending a fun day at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, the Torch yearbook staff arrived to the conference and began their training by attending workshops on developing yearbook themes. Throughout the rest of the event, staff members worked in large groups and attended specific

Pace High School students attend LIFE Camp in Mountain Home, Tx. By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker For 25 years, Monsignor Edward Pace High School has been sending students to LIFE camps across the country. Seven Pace LIFE leaders continued this tradition and attended the Marianist LIFE South camp in Mountain Home, Texas for seven days, July 16 to July 22. Marianist LIFE South is one of several leadership training workshops held around the country for high school students who wish to strengthen their faith and grow closer to God. The camp was held at Tecaboca, a rustic Marianist Retreat Center in the Texas country-side. Participants are only allowed to attend one LIFE camp as high school students. However, previous participants, including alumni and current Pace teachers, praised the transformative nature

of the camps to the current batch of LIFE leaders. Pace Campus Minister Andres Novela, a Pace class of 1995 alumnus, attended LIFE camp as a student and went along on this retreat as the adult moderator. “I had heard that it was a lifechanging experience which really worried me because I didn't know if it would live up to the hype,” said senior Christian Roig. “The experience far exceeded my expectations.” The camp was structured like a retreat with talks, workshops, and religious services, but also featured plenty of time for outdoor and fun activities such as soccer games, talent shows, and swimming. Just like the Pace students who first went to LIFE camp in 1990, these LIFE leaders formed new friendships and a closer relationship to each other and God. “The people were amazing,”

said senior Gabriel Sanchez. “It makes you realize that there are people just like us all over the United States and even the world.” “[The people] were very open and accepting and by the last day I felt as if everyone in the camp was like family,” said Roig. In addition to new friendships, the camp also created numerous memorable moments for the Pace LIFE leaders that will remain with them for years to come. “I will never forget being able to see the stars so clearly,” said senior Alejandro Hernandez. “It was absolutely one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life.” Hernandez also shared that “The most important thing I will take away from this camp is that we all have a purpose and are important in God’s eyes.”

Miami Dade Schools Superintendent discusses vision for new school year School Board members engaged in a visioning session and discussed priorities with Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho in preparation for the school year ahead at a meeting at the Doubletree Hotel. Carvalho unveiled the new programs and improved procedures specifically designed to better serve the needs of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools students and stakeholders, and laid the groundwork for a fiveyear District Strategic Plan for 2014-2019. Carvalho presented School Board members with 51 new choice and magnet programs including AP/Capstone, Cam bridge, Science, Mathematics, Information Technology and the Art. Eighteen new Cambridge schools and 10 new Capstone Programs are included. Magnet programs focus on STEM-related fields, including Geospatial Information Systems, iCode, Engineering, Conversation Biology, Environmental Science Agriscience, and Enterprise Resource Planning. Some programs are provided in partnership with

local colleges and universities, as well as science agencies. An improved magnet application and random selection system will help administrators manage the rapid growth in magnet programs and increase student access with clarity and transparency. New education partnerships for specific groups and schools within the District include collaboration with local technology industries to provide training, job opportunities and internships for students with autism, and the creation of a specialized teaching institute with the FIU School of Hospitality and Tourism Management to provide tourism and hospitality training for individuals with disabilities. The meeting also included a review of the school district's budget and projects funded by the General Obligation Bond approved by Miami-Dade voters, including 201 projects in the first three years, and another 76 projects from years 3, 4, and 5 that have been accelerated for the coming year. The district's digital transformation is well underway, with a record number of 11,000

Promethean interactive boards being installed for the coming year, and WiFi installation completed four years in advance of the national average. More than 100,000 electronic devices, including laptop computers and tablets, will be available to students, providing access to online textbooks and digital content.

Town of Miami Lakes lists Back-to-School safety tips Summer is over and it’s back to school time! In an effort to keep the new school year fun and safe, the Town of Miami Lakes asks that parents and children/students, and school staff and teachers, follow these simple guidelines when traveling to and from school: • Walk with your children to school. Walking to school promotes a healthy lifestyle, saves gas and time, and reduces traffic congestion around the school for everyone. If your school has an assigned crossing guard(s), identify the areas as you walk with your child. • Obey all posted speed signs. Slow down when entering 15 MPH School Speed Zones. Police will enforce this! Look closely at the signs showing hours of activation. • Use the drop-off and pick-up areas provided at the school when driving your child to school. Do not park your vehicle in these areas as this will slow traffic and inconvenience other parents. • If you must park your vehicle, please use the designated areas only. Do not block residential driveways or sidewalks as you will be ticketed. • Buckle Up! Ensure that all

occupants of the vehicle, especially children, are always buckled up. Children must be secured in proper child safety seats and/or booster chairs, if applicable. The State of Florida Primary Seat Belt Law requires everyone (adults and children) to buckle up. Fines are $129 per person per infraction. If a child (under the age of 18) is seen not wearing a seat belt, the driver will also be ticketed $179. • Pedestrian Safety Tips: Always STOP at the curb/edge, and LOOK LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT before crossing a street. Always use designated crosswalks and pedestrian signals, when available, making sure to follow all signal instructions. Do not cross midblock between intersections, unless there is a designated crosswalk. Do not cross in front of a vehicle unless you know for sure the driver clearly sees you. • Be Safe...Be Seen: When walking or bike riding, wear bright colors during the day. During dawn, dusk and night times, use lights and/or reflective clothing so you are more visible to drivers. Backpacks should have reflective materials on them. Carry a flashlight.

M-D County School Board approves four items proposed by Chair Perla T. Hantman The Miami-Dade County School Board unanimously approved four items proposed by Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman recognizing the Florida middle-school winner of the SIFMA Foundation’s InvestWrite National Essay Competition, as well as the endorsement of Hispanic Heritage Month, “Walkto-School” Day, and “Ethical Governance Day.” “I would like to congratulate Sofia Isabel Diaz of Miami Lakes K-8 Center for her outstanding first-place win in the SIFMA Foundation’s essay challenge,” said Hantman. “In addition, I am

proud to be able to bring forth initiatives that promote student safety, raise their consciousness and celebrate the histories and cultures of Hispanics around South Florida.” The Board voted to endorse Wednesday, October 8 as International “Walk to School Day;” Monday, September 15 to Wednesday, October 15 as "Hispanic Heritage Month" in Miami-Dade County Public Schools; and Wednesday, October 29 as “Ethical Governance Day 2014” in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

TREEmendous Miami honored by City of Miami Commission The non-profit TREEmendous Miami was honored in early August by the Miami City Commission for planting more than 25,000 trees by volunteers during 16 years. The group works to restore and increase the tree canopy in Miami-Dade County by planting and maintaining trees at schools, in parks, in blighted areas, along main thoroughfares and numerous neighborhood streets along with the restoration of the historic Miami City Cemetery. The group’s volunteers have included more than 6,700 students who have earned community serv-

ice hours while learning about the importance of trees in the environment. An ongoing project is along U.S. #1 from the end of I-95 to Bird Road along the Metrorail route. Its colorful design is viewed by a captive audience of rush hour drivers, moving slowly enough to appreciate the variety of tropical plantings in a model of linear landscaping. TREEmendous Miami is supported by memberships, city, county and stage grants, and private donations. For more information, visit www.treemendousmiami.org.
