Governor Rick Scott names Miami Lakes resident Javier Vazquez to MDX Board Following the abrupt departure of Miami-Dade County Expressway (MDX) Authority board member Gonzalo Sanabria, Florida Governor Rick Scott appointed Miami Lakes resident Javier Vazquez to the committee and tapped him to help lower costs for Floridians and fight toll fee increases. According to published reports, Sanabria resigned over the “mistreatment” of Mike Fernandez, the former finance chairman of Scott’s reelection campaign. Scott denied any maltreatment, saying Sanabria was informed he would not be reappointed to the transportation board because he supported raising toll fees and subsequently resigned. Vazquez, an attorney, joins the 13-member board of directors, who are professional experts in a broad cross-section of transporta-

tion and business, as well as experienced in civic duties and environmental issues, and a commitment to the state and Miami-Dade to help make lives easier for commuters. But some drivers are crying foul over toll fee hikes to help pay for forthcoming capital improvement projects. MDX, which operates five toll highways in Miami-Dade, claimed the agency needs about $800 million for future work projects and the previous board voted to raise the per mile toll rate on the Dolphins Expressway and Airport Expressway by 50 percent. Some residents called the toll fee hikes outrageous because it places more financial weight on already burdened commuters of Miami-Dade County. Moreover, MDX will install its

Miami Lakes resident and attorney Javier Vazquez appointed to MDX Board (Continued from Page 1) Open Road Tolling system that would allow the agency to capture toll revenue from the 45 percent of commuters that presently do not pay to use the highways. State Representative Jeanette M. Nunez, (R-Miami), a vocal critic of the toll increase that was approved last year, praised the Governor’s decision to pick someone who will focus on the task at hand. “I applaud Governor Rick Scott’s decision to appoint someone to the board who will be focused not only on the important work needed to be done at MDX, but who will also be vigilant on behalf of the commuters, residents and visitors of Miami-Dade County,” said Nunez. She has been shepherding leg-

islation during the current session to address what she considers to be egregious toll increases that will become effective July 1, 2014, and a lack of accountability at MDX. Many of the members of the Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation have co-sponsored the bill, House Bill 353. Vazquez, 50, is an attorney with Berger Singerman LLP. He currently serves as a board member for the Children’s Cancer Caring Center and on the real estate committee for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. He received his bachelor’s degree from Florida International University and his law degree from the University of Miami. He will serve on the MDX board until April 6, 2017.

As a teenager, Dixon developed a love of flying. He built the first airplane he ever flew, soloed at age 16, and at age 19, became the youngest flight instructor for the U.S. Army Corps. While stationed in Sikeston, Missouri, he met Adagene Bowman, to whom he was married for 70 years until her death in 2011. In 1942, the Dixons moved to Miami Shores where they built a home and raised their family. He became a pilot for Eastern Airlines, flying under contract for the Army Air Corps Military Transport Division to South American and African during World War II. He continued as an Eastern pilot for 25 years. Prior to his retirement from flying, Dixon invented and patented the first folding doors to utilize full height flexible hinges and, in 1953, founded Panelfold, Inc. Other inventions relating to folding doors, accordion partitions and operable walls led to hundreds of worldwide patents and trademarks and the manufacture of Panelfold products in 60 countries. Over the ensuring years, many Panelfold employees lived in Miami Lakes. The nearness of Panelfold’s factory in the Gratigny Industrial Park and the planned community atmosphere of Miami Lakes was an attraction for highly qualified executives and skilled workers from which Panelfold benefited.

Miami Lakes K-8 Center graduates from Class of 2010 join in Homecoming Reunion Over 100 high school seniors from schools throughout MiamiDade and Broward counties returned to their childhood school for the Miami Lakes K-8 Center Class of 2014 Homecoming Reunion. This group of students was the second to complete their K-8 years at Miami Lakes in 2010. Four years later, they returned as young men and women eager to recapture the memories from their early years, where they met as four- and five-year olds, and spent the major part of their school years. They returned with a great sense of appreciation and nostalgia as they walked the hallways of their school home for so many years. They shared their stories and let school administrators

know how special Miami Lakes K-8 Center had been in their lives. They laughed and cried as they enjoyed a slide show of pictures taken from the time they were little through eighth grade. They remembered all of the times they had together as they listened to their song “Friends Forever.” This special group of MLK-8 graduates was welcomed by their former teachers and administrators, some who drove and flew in from out of town for the special day. Every student received a beautiful shirt depicting the student graduates jumping into their future. The event was planned by the PTSA parent committee that organized the 8th grade activities when this group left the K-8 Center.

Miami Lakes Fencing Club celebrated fourth anniversary hosting ‘Young Superstars’ tourney

GARY AND ALEX CARDENAS

The Miami Lakes Fencing Club celebrated its fourth anniversary on March 22 as it hosted the “Young Superstars” tournament for fencers 14 years old and under. More than 40 boys and girls competed across Y10, Y12 and Y14 categories in both foil and epee. The event, sanctioned by the USA Fencing Association, was held at Epiphany Episcopal Church, 15650 Miami Lakeway North. It attracted members of many local and regional clubs

including the Hollywood Fencing Club, Masters Fencing Academy of North Miami Beach, Epee Miami Fencing Club of South Miami, Southwest Florida Fencing Club from Ft. Myers, Genesis Fencing Club of Melbourne, and a French competitor, Esther Roucaute, who was enjoying her spring break in South Florida. Fencing is a classic Olympic sport that enhances focus, discipline, self-confidence, flexibility, coordination and strategic thinking, and can be practice by anyone from 6 years old through 80 or more. “On top of being a sport that adults can take up at any age, it offers the rare opportunity to actively participate alongside your children,” said Gary Cardenas, assistant coach of the Miami Lakes Fencing Club, and father of Alexander Cardenas (12) who won a bronze medal in the Y14 epee event. “We’re actually looking forward to later this year when Alex turns 13 at which point, he will be eligible to participate in open division events and that means we can find ourselves facing each other in official competition,” Cardenas said. Fencing as a sport has shown growth in the past five years in South Florida, and it is gaining popularity especially among teenagers. “I know from my bothers, who are in college, that fencing is a very well regarded sport in

Many colleges, as well as the USA Fencing Association, offer scholarship opportunities for fencers. And unlike other collegiate sports such as football and baseball, within fencing there are far greater opportunities for the athletes to actually participate and excel. “Our goals are not only to develop our students’ athletic abilities and love of the sport, but to provide them scholarship opportunities for college,” said head coach

and Maestro Javier Andino. Several of his former students are currently attending major universities and fencing under scholarship awards. Adults and children are welcome to watch the Miami Lakes Fencing Club practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 8:45 p.m. at the Discover Montessori Academy building located next to Epiphany Episcopal Church. News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes I-Tree software suite assesses town’s tree canopy The beautiful tree canopies in Miami Lakes have long been the signature of the town; however, after a recent study conducted by the Town’s Community and Leisure Services Department, town management now knows that the trees also contribute significantly to the environment, human health, energy savings, and quality of life in the region. The initial assessment of the town’s trees was done using the ITree software suite which indicated that Miami Lakes has an estimated 17,832 trees. Tree canopy in Miami Lakes is estimated to be 30

percent. The four most common species in the regional forest were Southern Live Oak (37.5 percent), Geometry Tree (21.5 percent), Palmetto (10.1 percent), and West Indian Mahogany (6.4 percent). The four most commons species account for 75.7 percent of all trees; in total, 316 tree species were sampled in Miami Lakes. Trees have been proven to affect energy consumption by shading buildings and providing evaporative cooling. Trees tend to reduce energy consumption during times of elevated outside temperatures, especially in the summer

months. The assessment calculated that the trees in Miami Lakes reduce energy costs from residential buildings by approximately $231,000 annually. The Miami Lakes tree canopy also contributes significantly to the environment, the economy, and residents’ well-being. That canopy, and particularly leaf surface area, provides a wide range of important environmental benefits including air pollution removal, reduced carbon emissions, carbon storage and sequestration, and reduced energy use for buildings, among many other contributions.

The Station Scene by Cristina Armand, Public Information Officer Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department

Honoring unsung heroes in our community Whenever you have an emergency you know that if you call 91-1, help will be on the way. Most often, people just take the time to think the front-line responders, but they don’t realize all of the work it takes behind the scenes to get them there. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) dispatchers work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are part psychologists, part support system and 100 percent unsung heroes. Every year those heroes are recognized during the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International’s National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. This year’s event runs from April 6-12. The event was created to honor and recognize those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. In 2013, MDFR dispatchers moved to a new home in our head-

quarters in Doral. The dispatch center is 5,300-square-feet, giving dispatchers more work space. The new center boasts state-of-the-art communications equipment for regional fire rescue dispatch, command and control. This new evolution in interoperability communications readies the dispatchers and firefighters for the next generation of technology. The Miami-Dade Police Department receives 9-1-1- calls first. Then requests for fire suppression and emergency medical services (EMS) get transferred to MDFR. Dispatchers play a critical role, as they are the point of contact between the public and field units. Dispatchers jump into action as soon as a call is received. Like an orchestra, the dispatchers take on the role of the conductor. They locate where the incident is happening, see what units are closest to the scene, and evaluate how many units need to be dispatched.

When dealing with significant events, such as a brush fire, dispatchers go into overdrive. More than one dispatcher will handle a call of this magnitude. Each dispatcher takes on a different role. One will handle dispatching the units, while another will see where additional units are located in case they are needed and will communicate with other agencies. A third dispatcher will make calls to move units so that every part of MiamiDade County is covered to respond to calls. With their quick thinking, firerescue dispatchers significantly contribute to the reduction of deaths and loss of property by effectively coordinating emergency responses. On average, dispatchers process more than 230,000 fire and EMS calls a year. All of the behind-the-scenes contributions that dispatchers make truly make them unsung heroes in our community.

Miami Lakes Middle School names Irene Albalat Teacher of the Year By Roselind Romero The Miami Laker staff Art teacher Irene Albalat was the creative leader for the mural that now covers the entrance of Miami Lakes Middle School, a project commemorating the town of Miami Lakes' 50th anniversary. Following on the heels of the mural's reveal, Albalat was named Miami Lakes Middle Schools' Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014. Originally born in Alquizar, Cuba, Albalat settled in Miami with her family at the tender age of 6. She attended Mae M. Walters Elementary, Henry H. Albalat's first experience with educating children came at the age of 16 while working at a daycare center. She was fortunate enough to showcase her talent through various works of art in the day care center and community, and through the burgeoning talent of the children she taught. Beginning in 2003, Abalat worked at Golden Glades Elementary where she was chosen as Rookie Teacher of the Year that same year. In 2004, she taught at Coral Gables Elementary School where she began a successful art program. Did You Know? It is a violation of Miami-Dade County Ordinance Sec. 30-292, (1)(a)2 for a vehicle to stop or park on a sidewalk. The code reads, in part: “Except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic, or in compliance with law or the directions of a police officer or official traffic control device, no person shall: (a) Stop, stand, or

park a vehicle: 1. On the roadway side of any vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street; 2. On a sidewalk; 3. Within an intersection; 4. On a crosswalk; etc. (Presented as a public service by The Miami Laker. Our thanks to resident Ladd Howell for his contribution.)

Graham Companies’ Shula’s Sluggers participate in charity softball tourney The Graham Companies made its second appearance in the 2nd Annual Hotel Charity Softball Tournament, hosted by The Mandarin Oriental, Miami. The tournament brought teams from hotels across Miami-Dade County on Saturday, March 15, at Tropical Park. The Shula's Hotel and Golf Club team "Shula's Sluggers," along with all the participating teams raised funds to benefit His

House Children's Home, a local foster care agency providing safety and healing for abused, neglected and abandoned children located at 20000 N.W. 47 Avenue, Miami Gardens. The funds raised from entry fees to the event were matched by Mandarin Oriental and will go toward a 12 passenger van for His House. The van will make transportation accessible for underprivileged children. Currently, trans-

portation is either inaccessible or costly, discouraging guardians and children from participating in quality educational programs. Food trucks and furry celebrity guests Billy the Marlin, Sebastian the Ibis, and the UM Maniac all made appearances at this familyfriendly event. Out of the 12 participating teams, up to 8 teams played every hour making the event one of the largest collective gatherings of hotels in Miami.

THIS IS A BAD EXAMPLE of parking on a sidewalk. Be considerate of pedestrians with dogs, baby strollers, and small children with wagons or tricycles so they do not have to walk in the street where they can be hit by passing vehicles.

George Pringle, 71, looks to Alexis Castroman, Melanie start a Pickle Ball League for Arauz lead Mater Lakes Bears seniors in Miami Lakes to district win over Pace High Seventy-one-year-old George Pringle still loves to play sports and he is not planning on slowing down anytime soon. He played football in Connecticut at a time when players wore leather helmets without a face mask. Pringle also was a star on the diamond, tennis and basketball courts, and was elected to the Miami-Dade Softball Hall of Fame. The sports made him famous and now he wants to make an unheralded sport widely known in South Florida. Pringle is seeking to start a Pickle Ball league in Miami Lakes for senior citizens to help keep them active and having fun. Pickle Ball is a racquet sport which combines elements of bad-

minton, tennis, and table tennis. Two to four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a polymer perforated ball over a net. The sport shares features of other racket sports, the dimensions and layout of a Badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis with a few modifications. Pringle said Pickle Ball is popular in northern Florida but is unheard of in South Florida. He said he’s looking for players and hopes they can use some tennis courts in Miami Lakes to play Pickle Ball. “It’s a great senior sport,” said Pringle, who recently won the Senior Games in Cutler Bay. “It will keep senior citizens busy.” Pickle Ball is one of the fastest growing sports in North America, and it was invented in the mid 1960s as a children's backyard pastime, but quickly became popular among adults as a fun game for players of all skill levels. For more information, call Pringle at 786-897-3577.

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff If Mater Lakes Academy starting pitcher Alexis Castroman continues her stellar performance, the Lady Bears could win the district championship and make a deep run in the playoffs. In a pivotal district game against Pace High, Castroman pitched a complete game, striking out six batters with no earned runs, as the Lady Bears defeated their district rivals 5-2. The win puts Mater Lakes Academy (8-6) in second place of the district and a chance to win the division with a week left in the regular season. Castroman (2.15 ERA) struck out a Spartans’ pitcher with a runner on first base to end the game. “It was a great win for us,” she said. “The whole team played together, we knew what had to be done.” Melanie Arauz led the bears with a double, triple and four RBIs. Castroman, Hailey Rivera, Alyssa Rodriguez, Samantha Herranz and Arlene Calleriro each had a hit for the Lady Bears. The girls’ success on the diamond is attributed to their experi-

Student’s perspective on recent FBLA competition By Melissa Rey Special to The Miami Laker This year's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) state competition was much more than a student business conference. In those four days, as a member of the Monsignor Edward Pace High School competition team, I forged

new friendships, found my confidence, and changed my perception of the business world. In the days that led up to the competition I was nervous but soon I had forgotten my anxiety. After settling in, I prepared for my public speaking competition. Full of confidence and excitement, I

began to speak to the other teenagers who were competing in the “Public Speaking” category. I was met by students who shared their life and academic experiences with me, and because of my interactions with them, I have not only become a better student, but a more confident and tolerant indi-

vidual. Although I did not win the competition, this experience expanded my boundaries, and capabilities as a student and individual. I lost my fear of speaking in public. On the contrary, I now genuinely enjoy competing in these events because I am able to reach out to other people and they are able to reach out to me. Through these interactions, we are exposed to people and cultures we have never known, which gives us a better, well-rounded perspective of the world around us.

Over the following three days, I spent time with my fellow competitors. We helped each other, and because I chose to participate in this great organization, I have realized that we have preconceived notions about everything, and when we allow those preconceived ideas to affect our decisions, we limit ourselves. I definitely encourage every student to join FBLA and to experience the state competition. It will challenge your ideas, and encourage growth.

Miami-Dade School Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman honored the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Wilfredo A. Ferrer, during a special recognition at the March 12 School Board meeting. “Mr. Ferrer’s Violence Reduction Partnership is a shining example of community involvement in action and he is truly our partner in education,” Hantman said. “I am so pleased that he could join us to accept this recognition in honor of his advocacy

and many contributions to the students of South Florida and our community.” Ferrer, a graduate of Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School, launched the Violence Reduction Partnership in 2011, aimed at reducing crime in areas of South Florida that are prone to crime. One of the partnership’s goals is to build educational partnerships in order to mentor children, create jobs, rehabilitate offenders, and eradicate crime and violence.

The Pre-K teacher comes from a family of teaching professionals including her mother and sister, both of whom worked with special needs children. “My decision to become a teacher was made early on in my life and was primarily influenced by my mother and her 23 years as a paraprofessional,” said Delgado. “My parents are my role models, they have taught me the value of hard work, education, and living a full life.” Delgado was born and raised in Miami-Dade County, attending Immaculate Conception Elementary School and then Monsignor Edward Pace Senior High School. The event showcased the explorations of elementary, middle and high school students throughout the community. The competition's categories included behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, microbiology, zoology, earth and planetary science, environmental science, physics, astronomy, medicine and health. Students were awarded certificates, medals, trophies, and cash prizes. Students and parents also had the opportunity to learn more about MDC's academic programs and financial aid processes. her Educational Specialist Degree in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Miami and received a second master's degree in Public Administration in 2012 from FIU. In 2008, Delgado became a National Board Certified Teacher. Additionally, she plays an active role in Hialeah Garden's PTA team, the Special Education Committee, the Social Committee, the Green Committee and the After School Tutoring program. When she is not participating in school committees or teaching, Delgado applies her “french frying expertise” as a volunteer at the Teacher McKnight fundraising event held each year for her school, and participates in Miami fundraisers like Autism walks. During her summers, she spends time with her family and enjoys traveling abroad, especially to Spain. Delgado strives to collaborate with colleagues to improve the classroom experience for students, and tries to create new favorite memories every day. “I believe that early childhood years are the important period in the growth and development of a child,” said Delgado. “I feel privileged to witness and be a part of the development process that occurs in these years. My job by far is not the easiest, but most rewarding.” After 13 years of special needs education, Delgado herself has learned from her students “that nothing is impossible!”

Pace High will offer dual enrollment courses next year Monsignor Edward Pace High School is offering new dual enrollment courses beginning next school year for students entering junior and senior years. Students enrolled in general or honors levels of English now have the opportunity to earn dual enrollment credits through Florida International University and St. Thomas University. While Pace has always offered dual enrollment courses in various subjects, specific requirements were in place, thereby minimizing the list of candidates for credits. Opening fall 2014, nearly three times the number of students can enroll in dual enrollment courses for college credit in the equivalent of English Composition college courses. Currently, over 60 students entering junior and senior years as general and honors level students will earn college credit. These college credits are transferable to all state colleges and uni-

versities and serve as motivation for students to continue pursuing a post-secondary education. For additional information contact Carla Giberson, Director of Guidance, at CGiberson@PaceHS .com.

M. Lakes Congregational Church congregation celebrates Mardi Gras Dixieland music greeted worshippers on March 2 as Miami Lakes Congregational Church celebrated Mardi Gras, “the last hurrah” before Lent. Congregants wore masks and beads in Mardi Gras colors of gold, purple and green. Newly installed interim senior pastor, Rev. Richard Sparrow, said, “The Spirit blew through our midst and brought us to life.” Sparrow delighted the congregation when he stepped into the sanctuary wearing a Jester’s hat and bow tie. He paraphrased the prayer of the great Christian leader, St. Augustine, “Lord, make us quiet and introspective - but not just yet!” Dr. Adolfo Vidal, director of music, received a standing ovation for his rendition of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” The choir and congregation sang festive songs of the season including “Everytime I Feel the Spirit,” and “When The Saints Go Marching In.” Sparrow transitioned the worship service to the Sacrament of Communion with the reminder that “Christ’s Church is open to all people” and encouraged the congregation to have “open hearts to the Lenten Journey.” The church meets every Sunday

The numbers in a recent South Florida job report confirmed what all of the new building cranes going up in Miami indicate; the real estate market is back in Miami-Dade County. According to a recent Miami Herald article, as condo towers rise and homebuilding picks up, construction is creating job growth and is helping the state’s economic recovery. The real estate market seems to be booming in Broward County as well, adding 4,440 building-related jobs.
