Town officials participate in ‘Firefighter for a Day’ event

Cars for a Cure scheduled for Spring Fling April 19 on Main Street in set for April 4 Miami Lakes Youth Activities Task Force is hosting honor of Roberto Alonso the annual Spring Fling on

By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Former Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso was known for championing the efforts to develop Royal Oaks Park into a full-fledged park and recreation facility, adding police presence that brought down the crime rate to an all-time low, and discovered the land for the county to build a new fire station to improve the emergency response time on the town’s west side. Outside the political arena, Alonso had an affinity for classic cars and created the town’s annual Classic Car Show on Main Street, where he displayed his 1964 Chevy Coupe Super Sports car. After Alonso died from cancer in 2013, his friends reached out to his son, Roberto Alonso Jr., to keep his memory alive by resuming the event in his name. But he had a better idea. Alonso has teamed up with The Graham Companies and Dolphins Cycling Challenge for the inaugural Cars for a Cure in memory of his father – a classic car show that raises money for cancer research for the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, on Main Street. The former vice mayor’s classic Chevy Coupe will be on display along with other classic cars and brand new Mustangs. “My father had that car when he dated my mother,” Alonso told The Miami Laker. The Graham Companies suggested teaming up with Dolphins Cycling Challenge, an annual bicycling riding challenge that also raises money for the Sylvester Cancer Center in memory of former Miami Dolphins tight end and color commentator Jim Mandich. Mandich, a longtime Miami Lakes resident, died of cancer in 2011 and his son, Michael Mandich, participates in the event and unveiled the “88 Mad Dog

Lane Water Stop in his father’s honor. “It’s a passion to keep our father’s memory alive,” said Roberto Alonso Jr. “We wanted to raise money for cancer research at UM where he did his treatment.” Roberto Alonso Sr., was an original council member for Miami Lakes and the town’s first vice mayor. He was second in command for four consecutive terms and ran for mayor in 2008. After Miami Lakes incorporated in 2000, Alonso made Royal Oaks Park his pet project, which was only a tot-lot before he spearheaded an initiative to convert it to a full-fledged park and recreation area and a community center. The community center was renamed in his honor following his death.

Miami-Dade Property Appraiser Pedro Garcia speaks to Chamber By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff When Florida Governor Rick Scott picked Miami-Dade property appraiser Carlos Lopez-Cantera to be his lieutenant governor last year following Jennifer Carroll’s abrupt resignation, Pedro J. Garcia mulled running for the vacant position again during a special election. At the time, he was enjoying retirement with his wife, Amalia, as they sailed to Europe on a cruise ship and returned home to find themselves going shopping together. “I was sitting at home and my wife said she was going shopping. I asked can I go and it was the biggest mistake I made,” Garcia quipped, as he was the guest speaker for the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce’s March membership luncheon at Don Shula’s Hotel. “We went to Dadeland Mall and she visited every store there.” But his retirement was shortlived. Garcia said he couldn’t sit around the house not being involved in real estate in some capacity. So, he decided to run for his old position as the county’s property appraiser but was concerned his wife would oppose of the idea. The couple had breakfast one morning when he told her the news. “I told her I can’t retire, I got to go back to work,” Garcia told the

Chamber members and their guests. I never thought she would be so happy for me. I retired for only 19 days.” Garcia eventually won last year’s election. “It’s really good to be back. But we have a lot of work to do to keep the property values increasing again in Miami-Dade.” During his first stint as property appraiser from 2008 to 2012, Garcia said he often had to give the mayor and county commissioners some bad news about Miami-Dade’s estimates of taxable values. This year, he said it’s looking a little brighter when he releases the preliminary countywide figures in June. The estimated taxable value for 2014 was $209.937 billion, a 6.5 percent increase from 2013. “This year I should have some good news,” he said. Garcia said from, 2009-2012, the county experienced an estimated $6.6 billion decrease in property values, stemming from a rash of foreclosures and homestead exemption fraud among other issues that hindered real estate for residential properties. “All market value in the county is low despite what the mayor and county commissioners say,” said Garcia. “But we are working hard to establish rising market value.” Garcia said his property appraisal staff of about 300 employees and eight police officers are cracking down on home-

stead exemption fraud and other real estate scandals. In one case, Garcia said a homeowner never paid property taxes or a mortgage for years and rented out the house until county officials discovered the scam. The county placed a lien on the property and hit the homeowner with perhaps the largest fine and penalty levied against anyone for housing and homestead exemption fraud. Garcia said the fines and penalty fees mounted to over $500,000. Garcia urged potential homeowners to consult with an attorney and visit his office to make sure the property is in good standing and know the real property value appraisal. “Some people may say the value of the property is wrong, so sit down with us in the office to prove who is right,” Garcia said. Garcia said the biggest real estate boom is occurring in the city of Miami. He said 10,000 condo units and shopping centers will be built in the Downtown and Brickell area and most of the condominiums have already been sold. “That’s about $10 million in taxes,” he said.

MAKE YOUR DANCE DREAMS A REALITY

DID YOU KNOW? Harry Wayne Casey who was the lead singer of the American band KC and the Sunshine Band was a Miami Lakes resident for more than 20 years. Born in Hialeah, Casey formed his famous band in the Miami Lakes/Hialeah area while working as a record store employee and later at TK Records. While attending Miami-Dade College in 1972, Casey was packing records for shipment in the company’s warehouse, where he met bassist and part-time recording engineer Richard Finch. The two formed a creative partnership and cut numerous demo tapes of their vocals and music at the warehouse after midnight hours. While at a wedding reception for TK Records in 1973, Casey was introduced to songwriter/producer Clarence Reid when he initially heard the junkanoo, a highly festive, rhythmic-layered, hornpunctuated musical genre that originated in the Bahamas. After assembling some studio musicians, Casey and Finch made their first professional recording as KC and the Sunshine Band and the group’s first single, “Blow Your Whistle,” went to No. 27 on the Rhythm and Blues Chart in 1973. The group’s second single, “Sound Your Funky Horn,” climbed to No. 21 on the R&B charts a year later. “That’s the Way I Like It,” went to No. 1 on the R&B and pop charts in 1975. In 1976, KC and the Sunshine

Band won five Grammys and the reissued “Queen of Club,” became a hit song in the U.S. and UK, and “Shake, Shake, Shake” was the group’s third number one hit topping the R&B charts for a month. Perhaps among the band’s best loved hits was, “Keep It Coming Love,” which peaked at No. 1 on the R&B charts and No. 2 on the pop charts. KC and the Sunshine Band was part of the then-biggest movie soundtrack from the 1970s. In 1977, the soundtrack for the movie “Saturday Night Fever” starring John Travolta, sold 11 million copies and held the top on the pop charts for 24 weeks in 1978. KC and the Sunshine Band’s song “Boogie Shoes” was included in the soundtrack and the single reached No. 1 on the pop charts the same year. As a result of the soaring popularity of New Wave and Synth-pop in the early 1980s, Casey dissolved the Sunshine Band and recorded several pop-oriented solo albums but faced a major setback. In 1982, Casey survived a near fatal car wreck that left him partially paralyzed and had to relearn how to walk, dance and play the piano. He bounced back in a big way in 1984 when his solo hit, “Give It Up,” reached No. 1 in the UK and was a top 20 hit in the United States. After he temporarily retired from the music business in 1985, Casey reformed the Sunshine Band in the 1990s and the group

HARRY WAYNE CASEY toured throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, and also toured England, Italy, Australia and South America. Casey performed on the results show of American Idol in 2009 and at the 125th Tournament of Roses Parade last year, and KC and the Sunshine Band performed at halftime of the Liberty Bowl in Memphis in 2011. Some of KC and the Sunshine Band’s hits were featured in the NBC-TV miniseries “The 70’s,” which aired in 2000. Today, Casey and his band continue their performances while he produces other artists and is active in charity work in Miami and the Miami Lakes and Hialeah areas. He lives in the Miami area. Hialeah Miami Lakes High and Jose Marti MAST earn School of Distinction honors By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Among 134 national winners recognized by the Magnet Schools of America (MSA), Miami-Dade County had 28 schools earn the Magnet Schools of Distinction Award which will be presented at the National MSA Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina in April. Local schools, Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy and Hialeah Miami Lakes (HML) were among the 28 Miami-Dade recipients for the award. Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy was recognized for the third consecutive year as a School of Distinction for its magnet programs in math and science technology where students focus on three strands: Life science, physical science or computer science. The academy houses grades 6 through 12 and uses a conceptbased learning approach to immerse students in a 21st century curriculum. HML was also recognized as a School of Distinction for its iPrep magnet program, the brainchild of Miami-Dade County Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, whose mission is to provide students with a

technology-rich environment and opportunities for growth with a university curriculum, all within the high school’s campus. All teachers are vetted and approved by FIU for a dual enrollment partnership so students have the opportunity to graduate high school with their associate’s degree. Both schools were recognized for curriculum innovation, high academic standards, successful diversity efforts, specialized teaching staff, and parent community involvement. “I’m extremely proud of the work of our teachers and students and what this means for our school and our community,” said HML principal Eric Acosta. “It just validates the work being done and the high standards in our program.” Minimum requirements must be met for potential applicants for magnet programs. From there, a lottery is done from the pool of applicants for acceptance. For more information on Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy visit www.mast3.com. Main Street in Miami Lakes. It has become tradition for the organization to be part of the audience along with the Miami Rescue Mission. Without a doubt, they make up one of the most enthusiastic and appreciative audiences during the run of the show. It is our honor to have them as guests at the playhouse. The president of the group, Shamelle Jenkins, is a youth advocate representing and serving the youth in foster/kinship and adoptive care for more than 28 years. She believes the group's visits to The Main Street Playhouse are “an impetus to broadening the horizon of its’ youth and leads to untapped talent being discovered.” For 35 years, MDCFAPA has served youth in congregate care, a safe harbor complete with harmony, love and peace. “Life is a ship,” said Jenkins. “You have to jump in the ship, grab the oars, steer it, cheer, laugh and cry through the journey and bring someone else with you to share and care along the way. Keep it moving as you steer through life with one hand extended to help someone else to sail.” These words of wisdom speak loudly to The Main Street Players as our mission is to take audiences on an unforgettable journey by reminding them “you are not alone. We are in this together.”

Glamour Nails and Spa opens in the Lake Patricia Shopping Center By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff While growing up in Venezuela, Dali Ruiz marveled at her mother’s artistry to make people look their best as a certified nail technician and facial and body therapist. She followed in her mother’s footsteps in her homeland and later was seeking to start her own business but in another country. Her television set was her window to America and watching shows on the increasing success of nails and spa salons essentially sealed her decision to relocate to the United States. Ruiz and her husband arrived in Miami 15 years ago, when she first worked for several nails and spa companies, including her previous stint at Rhoda Salon in Miami Gardens, before she was

able to start her own business, Glamour Nails and Spa in Miami Lakes. The business, 13969 N.W. 67 Avenue in the Lake Patricia Shopping Center, had its grand opening two weeks ago, where a crowd on hand celebrated Ruiz’s new venture. “I’m excited,” said Ruiz, who has lived in the Miami Lakes area with her husband for 15 years. “I love to do nails, massages and skin treatments to make people look good. I had been working for a long time but I realized it was time for me to go into my own business.” Glamour Nails and Spa offers customers manicures, pedicures, deep tissue massages, body waxing, facial and skin treatments, dry therapy, cavitation and vaccumtherapy.

Ruiz and her staff can also remove dead cells in the face to help renew the skin and treat cellulite. Ruiz said she loves to do nails with the different designs to make them look colorful and pretty. “It’s our pleasure to please our customers,” Ruiz said. Ruiz said improving the beauty of people is her true calling in life. “I love to service people by enhancing the beauty of women,” she said. “That’s what I was born to do.” Glamour Nails and Spa is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday and closed Sunday and Monday. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are highly recommended. The business is having a special for first time customers, $25 on a manicure and pedicure. For more information, call 786587-9836.

M. Lakes resident Natalie Aguilar celebrates her 15th with Quinceañera

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Town officials participate in ‘Firefighter for a Day’ session Town of Miami Lakes officials learned what it’s like to be one of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s bravest by participating in a “Firefighter for a Day” training event on March 25 at the MiamiDade Fire Rescue Department’s training facility in Doral. Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, a 27-year veteran of the Coral Gables Fire Department, came up with the idea of having his Council colleagues, Town Manager, and Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., or a member of his staff, experience hands on firefighting exercises and drills, the way he does on a weekly basis. Basically, Rodriguez wanted them to experience the challenges of being a Firefighter and at the same time, provide them with a memorable set of lessons and trust and team work. The participants included

Mayor Wayne Slaton, Vice Mayor Manny Cid, Town Manager Alex Rey, Rodriguez, and Carlos Fleites from Bovo’s staff. All were provided official gear, fire boots and oxygen tanks so they could simulate the kind of pressures firefighters face every day. The training exercise included how to properly use and control a fire hose and how to use the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. The participants then extinguished a car fire, and climbed an aerial ladder to suppress a kitchen fire in a mock single-family home that MDFR uses for training purposes. “With public safety being the Council’s top priority, it was a privilege to share my profession with them,” said Rodriguez. “We had the opportunity to train with Firefighters that serve our Town residents on a daily basis.”

MIAMI LAKES RESIDENT NATALIE AGUILAR, born on January 4, 2000, celebrated her 15th birthday with her closest family and friends with a traditional Quinceañera celebration at Reception Palace Ballrooms. The event was followed by her birthday wish, a dream trip to Europe with her family. Aguilar is currently a freshman at Monsignor Edward Pace High School. She is the daughter of Alex Aguilar, Miami Lakes business owner of Blinds of Miami, and Eileen Aguilar, Miami Lakes Realtor at Florida Real Estate Experts, and sister to Anthony Aguilar.

Miami Lakes residents can sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a free children’s reading program that mails a new book to the home of a new born up to 5 years old. Every child can have books of their very own, at no cost to the parents. The key to proficiency in reading is to start early and begin reading to children the day their are born, according to the program. Additionally, the more words a

child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the more likely he or she will be a proficient reader. News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Town launches mobile app; holds contest for residents to suggest a ‘catchy’ name Town of Miami Lakes will soon launch a new mobile app and staff is seeking resident input for a catchy name. Submit ideas to Jackie Calzadilla at CalzadillaJ@ miamilakes-fl.gov to win a dinner for two at Shula’s Steakhouse. The Town continues to remain dedicated to improving its use of technology to enhance transparency and open the lines of communication with residents and business owners. With 90 percent of the population toting a cell phone and more than half using a smartphone, the phone is the quickest way to connect. The new award-winning mobile app, proposed by Councilmember Tony Lama, can be used on iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows phones. With this app, the Town looks to boost citizen interaction, improve efficiency and help increase response times for resident and business requests. The system will allow residents to submit requests and access critical government information via a

number of methods including web, native smartphone applications, SMS text messaging, and a toll free hotline. Once a request is submitted, residents will be able to view and track the request for updates as well as provide additional information and feedback. The new mobile app will also allow dynamic translations between residents and Town staff which opens up Town services to non-native English speaking residents. The entire application and all content will automatically be translated into the user’s native language settings. All submitted content will be sent to staff in English and the staff response is automatically translated back to the user’s native language. Direct communication via controlled push notifications will keep residents updated on the status of their service requests, and can also be used to alert users of road closures due to construction or accidents, emergency, weather and safety.

Pace High School students mentor fifth-graders at Marine Science Day By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Students from Pace High School became teachers themselves as they instructed nearly 100 fifth grade students from St. Lawrence School and Nativity School in a unique pair of field trips at Hollywood North Beach Park in late February. Working in conjunction with St. Thomas University, which provided a lot of the materials used on the trip, Pace science teacher Stephanie Hibbard’s Marine Science classes made eight stations at a picnic area next to the beach. Throughout the morning, fifth graders would alternate between stations on different subjects such as water chemistry, microbiology, and avian ecology. The format followed a condensed version of a typical high school student’s day, only outdoors and with trips to the beach to look for birds and observe beach erosion. According to Hibbard, the Pace students were given a chance to prove what they have learned in her classroom and use their knowledge to teach others as their third quarter project. “Our kids [were] the teachers,” said Hibbard. “They had to create lesson plans and assignments with answer keys.” The fifth graders were chaperoned by teachers from their schools and parents. St. Lawrence fifth grade home room teacher Christopher Souza chaperoned his school’s students, while Nativity fifth grade teacher Annette

She said her rookie season was an experience she will never forget. “My first year was very nerveracking at times coming in as a college player and actually being the youngest player on the team,” she said. “But all in all, the girls made me feel comfortable. It was a fun experience, enough for me to want to come back again.” Poviones said the shift from college to the pros was difficult at first but she’s adjusting to the transition of being out on her own and staying active off the playing field. “Going to the pros was such a transition, not having school and not having a set schedule that the down time was a challenge,” she said. “I prefer to keep busy. St. Thomas University definitely kept me focused, it balanced everything else out for me.” Poviones rose to fame as a Bobcat, scoring 46 goals and recording 20 assists in three seasons. As the team’s captain, she led the Bobcats to a Sun Conference Championship and to the Round 16 at the 2013 NAIA National Championships. In her senior season, Poviones ranked third in the nation with 28 goals and finished fourth with 66 points. She was named third-team AllAmerican by the National Soccer Coaches Association as a senior and a first-team All-Conference selection in 2012 and 2013.

Miami Lakes native Melony Poviones excels in first season of pro soccer By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff For a rookie, Houston Aces forward Melony Poviones came through like a veteran player in the clutch. The Miami Lakes native scored the only two goals in the 2014 Women’s Premier Soccer League Final Four semifinal game against the Connecticut CFC Passion, propelling her team to the championship game. But her team’s victory paled compared to her nostalgic experience. “There was a time frame where I was homesick and wanted to go home,” she said. “I came in and literally scored two effortless goals. I hadn’t been scoring too much and hadn’t been on my A game.” The Aces lost the championship game, 1-0, to the Long Beach Futbol Club. Poviones is embarking on her second season and seeking another shot at the championship to avenge her team’s loss. The Aces opened up their preseason on March 27. Poviones, a St. Thomas University alumni, finished last season with 10 goals and eight assists. She helped lead the Aces to the Big Sky South Division regular season championship. The 5’3 nimble player scored eight goals against division opponents and Houston won the Big Sky South title with an 8-1-1 record. Poviones played big against Connecticut, as the youngest play-

During the offseason, Poviones returned to St. Thomas University for her final semester last fall and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. “I am not going to be able to rely on soccer for the rest of my life,” she said. She also coached the Miami Lakes under eight youth girls soccer team at the Miami Lakes United Soccer Club. “I am going to miss them but I will be coaching a youth team in Houston,” she said. “I love kids and love coaching and that’s what I want to continue to do down the road.”

Cassidy Zeigler, who has played for the Miami Lakes Optimist Club since she was 8 years-old and currently plays for coach Alex Castroman on the Miami Lakes Heat Travel team, got a pivotal win recently for her Monsignor Pace softball team. Zeigler has been pitching for the past four years and recorded the win to secure the Spartans the No. 2 spot in their district with the win against St. Brendan. “She’s an all around player,” said Castroman. “She does whatever is asked without complaining and plays with heart.” Cassidy is just one of many girls who have played in the Optimist program and has achieved great heights in this sport. Her father, James Zeigler, has been coaching at Miami Lakes Optimist for the past seven years and has been an assistant coach at Pace for several years as well. “I am extremely proud of her, as are the members of the Optimist Club,” Ziegler said.

DCS students participate in UM’s Girl’s Engineering Day In late February, 15 young Dade Christian School ladies from grades 9-11 were selected to participate in the University of Miami's Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. The girls, who were nominated by their teachers, have excelled in the subjects of math and science and demonstrated an interest in pursuing a degree in engineering. Accompanied by secondary teacher, Samantha Carrillo, the day began at the UM Student Activities Center where the attendees received an introduction to engineering and an overview of UM’s program. “Visiting colleges as a high school student motivates you to do better in school,” said 9thgrader Emily Gonzalez. While most students her age are still adjusting to the academic demands of high school, Emily already knows where and what she wants to study. “During the summer before my freshmen year, I interned at the University of Miami and learned to program in Java C++, a coding language,” said Gonzalez. “There, I got acquainted with a girl who attends Stanford [University]. That’s where I want to go to study computer engineering.” The students, who were divided into groups based on their engineering interests, met with UM professors and participated in labs. In the civil engineering lab, the girls were assigned the same project incoming freshmen

at UM complete – they had 30 minutes to create a bridge that can sustain 5 lbs. of weight using only K’NEX pieces. Other stations included circuit board creations, environmental water filters, as well as various experiments demonstrating the different sciences utilized by engineers. Fellow 9th-grader Gianna Rodriguez enjoyed learning about the biomedical engineering field and networking with girls from other schools who share her passion for science. “It was a nice experience, it really broadened my perspective on what engineering actually is,” said Rodriguez. “During winter break I interned at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center under renowned doctors. I got to participate in research, look at cancer cells under a microscope and classify them. I’m definitely thinking about [a degree in] biomedical engineering.” From beginning to end, the entire day was filled with positive messages of encouragement and female empowerment. As stated in a recent University of Miami news release, “Engineering is still a male-dominated field,” said UM biomedical engineering major Stacie Arechavala, who, as the high school outreach coordinator for the UM chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, organized Thursday’s event. “We’re helping these girls learn about a fascinating field that can positively affect lives and change the world.”

DADE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL students Katrina Alonso, Alysha Medina, Gianna Rodriguez and Cassie Chavon created a sturdy and long bridge design using K’NEX pieces during UM’s Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.

Goleman students participate in Million Orchid Challenge By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Barbara Goleman Senior High students participated in The Million Orchid Challenge, a component of the Fairchild Challenge, an annual competition for elementary, middle and high schools. The purpose of the Orchid Challenge is to reestablish one million orchid plants in South Florida, particularly in publicly accessible urban landscapes, within five years. Orchid seedlings are planted within bottles, moved to trays, and then when large enough, onto trees. Frederick Matter, Environmental Science and Biology teacher at Goleman attended a workshop to receive training and supplies to conduct the project with the students. Orchid seedlings, which are tended to in the classroom on trays, are on a light cycle and fertilized until they grow large enough for deflasking and are moved into larger growth chambers by Fairchild Gardens. Currently there are 235 surviving seedlings in Matter’s classroom.

“Participation for the students in the project is important because it teaches them responsibility and exposes them to real life scientific research. Many of the labs done at school are not as open ended. We know what the results should be going into the lab but in this case it is real science and no one knows the answers,” said Matter. Matter’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science class is assuming most of the responsibility for the seedlings and are preparing the presentation for the competition. To date the following students have received special recognition from the Fairchild Challenge: Derlis Leyva, second place for Mayoral Speech; Nicholas Rose, Special Merit for Eloquent Presentation Environmental Debates on Biodiversity; Mariela Place, Special Merit for Strong Composition Plants and Their Pollinators; and Kaitlyn Kukurudza, Special Merit for Detail Plants and Their Pollinators. Spring is a great time of year! By Father Jose Alvarez Pastor, Our Lady of the Lakes Spring is a great time of year! Although here in South Florida this season is not as highly anticipated as in places where the climate is colder, it nonetheless fills us with great hope and enthusiasm. This is because spring reminds us of new life and perhaps a little more. Spring seems to remind us of eternity. As we watch flowers blossom, hear birds sing, and see daylight extend, we get a sense of paradise. All of us are in search of paradise. Regardless of our race, culture or creed we yearn to be in the presence of glorious beauty which will never end and always seem new. Those of us who are Christians celebrate this promised inheritance at Easter. After journeying in solidarity with Jesus through the cruel and bitter reality of his passion and

death on Good Friday, we rejoice and celebrate the eternal glory of his resurrection at Easter. It is a passing over from winter into spring not ALVAREZ only for him, but for all of us willing to embrace love as he did. At Easter, through the merits and accomplishments of Jesus, we are reminded that love conquers all – even death! May the glory of the risen Christ fill our hearts with much joy, peace and hope! May his blessings be upon us, our loved ones and all peoples. May the reality of Easter confidently remind us that all who live in love will always live in spring! Happy Easter!

Palm Vista Community Church By Al Pino, Pastor, Palm Vista Community Church Easter is about Christ Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Christ lived the perfect life we could not live. Christ died the death we deserved paying the penalty for our sins. Christ rose from the dead for the forgiveness of sins for all those who repent and believe in him as their Lord

PINO

and Savior. We invite you to come experience life Christ’s and resurrection with us at Palm Vista Community Church this Easter weekend.

Religious leaders offer Easter messages

‘Easter is for Children’ By Rev. Richard Sparrow Interim Minister Miami Lakes Congregational Church “Easter is for children.” I have heard that expression throughout the years. It has been said by persons of faith and non-faith – wellmeaning people who love to see the delight in children’s eyes on seeing the Easter Bunny or colored eggs scattered over a lawn. To me, however, the expression isn’t wrong – it just doesn’t begin to touch the true meaning of Easter. Easter truth is for every person, every living being who has ever struggled to find meaning and hope when money cannot purchase that which is most deeply needed. Easter is a word of grace in anxiety, a word of peace in conflict, a word of hope in despair, a word of comfort in sorrow. Easter is assurance that the last word in this world is not ours but God’s. In The Apostle’s Creed, the line that has long touched my soul is here contained: “Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell.” I take great comfort in that line – for at those times in life when we find ourselves ‘in hell’, Jesus knows where to find us and we are not alone. If that sounds harsh, my sense is that few, if any of us, do not find ourselves in that place at one time or another. The death of a child or loved one, the loss of a job or home, an

unexpected medical diagnosis that changes our world, a betrayal, an accident, a fight that leads to painful separation… the list can go SPARROW on of lifeevents that cause us to know the reality of ‘hell’. Jesus, the Apostles’ Creed tells us, descended there, knows the landscape and can find us when we are there. We are not alone. Jesus did not remain there, however, and we’re told that on the ‘third day he rose again from the dead …’ God had the last word for Jesus . . . and God has the last word for us. Easter fun is for children, but Easter truth is for every

one of us when obstacles and pain block our path or suck the air from our lungs. We don’t understand precisely what happened on that first Easter but we know that something happened, something that turned Jesus’ followers from despair to hope, from doubt to faith, from defeat to courage. Jesus got up, he rose and in that action God lifts us all up. The New England author Henry David Thoreau once wrote, ‘All people live lives of quiet desperation.’ Over the years of my life, I’ve seen how true that is, even though most of us give no evidence of that reality. Easter truth assures that ‘quiet desperation’ is not the end but a stop along the way. The end is God, with the Easter truth, ‘He has risen’ and in his rising is our life and hope.

Miami Lakes Baptist Church changes name and identity to Elevate Church By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes Baptist Church took a page from Apple’s marketing handbook for the announcement of their name change to Elevate Church. Church staff simply promoted the sequential date “12.13.14” along with the words “Wish we could tell you more” for weeks which baffled and enticed the congregation. At last, when the day came the name “Elevate” was presented for the church located at 6250 Miami Lakes Dr.

JV

For a church that has endured change in various aspects of leadership over the last 10 years, a name change to represent the renewal of an identity seemed only fitting. “Although this is in a sense a brand new identity, it really is a reflection of the heart behind what the church has been doing over the last 5 years which is to keep Christ elevated,” said Worship Director Gerry Sosa. “With the name Miami Lakes Baptist Church, it emphasized two things: the com-

munity, which we love, and the denomination, which we are still associated with. But what we really wanted was to show Christ exalted and now that’s represented in our name.” “Elevate” was a name formerly used by the church’s prayer ministry whose prayers, Sosa says, is what catapulted the church into the harvest they are now witnessing. About 450 attenders pass through the church on any given Sunday for one of the three allotted service times at 9:30, 11 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. Louis Egipciaco, formerly the church’s Youth Pastor, left the church for some time only to return as Lead Pastor 5 years ago. Coming full circle from a long stretch without any youth ministry is yet another change – the addition of youth nights on Friday nights at 7 p.m. scheduled to begin April 10. The church plans to continue engaging with the youth and the community through events such as its annual Easter Egg Hunt. For more information visit www.goelevatechurch.com.

THE MIAMI LAKER

In Memoriam:

Charles Sonny Metzcus Charles Sonny Metzcus, a longtime Miami Lakes resident who was a teacher and athletic trainer at Hialeah Miami Lakes High School for many years, died on March 14 following an illness. He was 82. Metzcus’ daughter, Monique Quenneville, said her father knew he was ill before he died. Metzcus and his wife of 47 years, Mary Rose, have been Miami Lakes residents since 1974. As a teacher and athletic trainer, his hard work and dedication affected the lives of many people, especially at HML. He retired in 1995 but continued to substitute teach at HML and volunteered for the school’s athletic events. “I will always remember with pride working with so many great student athletes and coaches during my years at HML,” he said during his retirement. Metzcus was honored with the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Lifetime Achievement Social Service Award in 2013 for outstanding service in the state of Florida. He was a proud veteran having served in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Captain. Metzcus is survived by his wife, daughters Monique Quenneville, Michelle Reavis, Miriam

CHARLES SONNY METZCUS

Ochoa, grandson Austin, his brothers Michael Greg and his sister, Gail Metzcus. His family hosted a celebration of his life on March 17 at Memorial Plan Funeral Home in Hialeah, and a mass the following day at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Miami Lakes. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations in his memory go to the Trojan Booster Club Inc., at HML’s athletic department.

Seed, time and harvest at Montessori Children’s House of Miami Lakes By Paul Thibodeau Special to The Miami Laker Can prosperity be obtained through knowledge? The Bible says in Isaiah 33:6 “And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times and strength of salvation, the fear of the Lord is his treasure.” The philosophies of Maria Montessori and Jean Piaget regarding education are similar in that they both value motor and verbal skills, and the children manipulate a variety of hands-on lessons and activities with the united idea that children develop in sequence. However, Montessori and Piaget are not in agreement on timing. Piaget believed that children have periods of cognitive or intellectual development not reaching

MLK-8 schedules graduate reunion on April 30 All graduating high school seniors, class of 2015, who attended Miami Lakes K-8 Center, are invited to an alumni reunion on Thursday, April 30 from 2:45 to 5:30 p.m. in Miami Lakes K-8 Center’s cafeteria. There will be food, refreshments and entertainment in celebration of the alumni. To RSVP, email Sharon Zajac at sharon.zajac@hotmail.com or Bianca Larsh at bmlarsh@bellsouth.net by April 3.

the concrete stage until around the age of 7 and basic knowledge through the senses from birth to two y e a r s . Montessori THIBODEAU stressed that the development of crucial periods of sensitivity are from birth to 3 years and should be encouraged from an early stage. Piaget’s theory places the teacher as an observer and supporter while the children have the freedom to move about and to choose their activity. Piaget’s classroom stresses completing the lesson, getting the job done, and a required nap time. The Montessori Method places the teacher as demonstrator showing a lesson and allowing the children to repeat the activity as long POOL EQUIP.

as their attention span will allow and then choose a different activity with minimum interference from the teacher. Montessori’s classroom is child directed and a child may lie down if they choose to do so. We understand at Montessori Children’s House of Miami Lakes that we are farmers and when we put the law of seed, time, and harvest to work for us, it ultimately germinates. Galatians 6:7 says “That what so ever a man soweth, that he shall reap.” Like plants, children are subject to God’s laws of progression. In the Gospel of Mark 4:26-28 it says “The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seeds upon the ground and then continues sleeping and rising the night and day while the seed sprouts and grows and increases. He knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear then the full grain in the ear.”

Applications for Naval Academy’s Summer STEM Program are due by April 15 Annapolis, Maryland – Applications are now being accepted through April 15 for the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program. The program is held in three sessions: June 1-6 for rising 8th-9th graders; June 8-13 for rising 10th graders; and June 15-19 for rising 11th graders. The program is an overnight academic program designed for rising students in good academic standing who have a keen interest in math and science.
