Marjorie Prime at Main St. Playhouse to May 7 By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Marjorie Prime is reminiscent of the 1999 film, Bicentennial Man, more for the complex pain of humanity than for the technology. “On the surface Marjorie Prime seems to be about aging and memory loss, but at its core it’s about finding our identities and the changing relationships we have with our families and the world itself,” said the play’s director, John Olivera. Marjorie, played by Carol Sussman, is a woman in her 80’s, wading through the sor-

row of the things she has lost – her husband, her son and herself. Marjorie’s daughter, Tess, played by Fara Sax, vacillates between being supportive and being spiteful, trying to find balance in the complicated relationship between mother and daughter. Jon, played by Harry Marsh, is the ever-patient sonin-law and Walter, played by Chris D’Angelo, is a ‘prime,’ the youthful robotic version of Marjorie’s long-dead husband. Marjorie’s memory is failing her, and in the moments she is lucid she endures the embarrassment old age brings, like

Cuevas Eye Center hosts free LASIK screening tests on Friday, April 28 By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff On April 28 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the Cuevas Eye Center in the Cypress Village Shopping Center, 7480 Fairway Dr. Suite 105, is hosting a free LASIK screening event. Twin brothers Dr. Jesus and Dr. Jose Cuevas own the eye center and encourage visitors to stop by to determine if they are eligible for a LASIK procedure. LASIK is a refractive surgery to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia and reduce or elimi-

nate dependence on prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. Consultations will be made onsite by the ophthalmologists and those that are eligible and elect to have the procedure will receive a $500 discount and interest-free payments for 24 months. Payment is also accepted through the Care Credit credit card. The Cuevas Eye Center is partnering with TLC Laser Eye Centers for the event. incontinence. Marjorie Prime shows that remembering is a double-edged sword. It makes us who we are but it makes us relive all our pain. Taking place in a future so distant that ZZ Top and Julia Roberts are unfamiliar names, Marjorie Prime inevitably leads one to question their own fate and the difficulty in balancing being the person our loved one needs us to be and the people they made us become. Sax, Marsh and D’Angelo all bring life to their characters but Sussman carries the play with her true-to-life portrayal of a woman lost in a fog that finds herself heartbroken every time CAST of Marjorie Prime now running at Main Street she is reminded of the loved Playhouse includes (from left Carol Sussman, Chris ones she’s lost. Council votes on ordinance setting MLEC hosts meeting of managers with process to select next Town Manager City/County Schools Superindent Carvalho By The Miami Laker staff Next month, Miami Lakes initiates a one-year process to select the next town manager to replace Alex Rey, who’s calling it a career following three decades in county, city and small municipal governments. Rey, who had two stints as Miami Lakes’ town manager – a total of 15 years – is retiring to take advantage of the DROP program, which allows government employees access to a lump sum benefit in addition to their monthly retirement benefit when they terminate employment and retire. Rey’s resignation is effective in March of 2019. Town staff drafted an ordinance to which council members gave their initial approval

this week to create certain criteria that candidates must meet to be considered for the position including qualifications to carry out the goals and objectives in the town’s Strategic Plan. The final reading and a public hearing is scheduled for May. At a recent workshop, council members discussed the guidelines for the series of screening and interviews which may include tapping a search firm to help a local citizens committee and council members pick the right person for the job. The selection process is the first under the town’s new charter in which a citizen’s committees and council members will pick the next town manager.

Previously, the mayor selected a candidate and his colleagues had to approve or reject his confirmation. Once council members appoint a seven-member citizens committee, the position will be advertised in national and local newspapers and trade magazines as well as online announcements. The selection process for the committee and council members can include one-on-one or group interviews during public meetings or they can do both. The citizens committee would screen and interview candidates and narrow its choices down to about five candidates for council members to decide. Council members would like to pick a new town manager by the summer of 2018 but may want to provide council candidates, who are planning to run in November of that same year, the right to vote on a new manager. Miami Lakes residents who may apply for the position must have lived in the town for at least two years, the ordinance may read. Council members may ask Rey to assist in the search for his replacement.

The Miami-Dade City and County Management Association (MDCCMA), a professional association made up of city managers and administrators from all the municipalities in Miami-Dade County, met with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho at Miami Lakes Educational Center on March 17. The meeting was an opportu-

nity for the city managers to discuss with the Superintendent ways in which local governments in the County can further partner with and support the MDCPS in their respective communities. The members of the MDCCMA were treated to a delicious lunch prepared and served by the students in the MLEC Entrepreneurship Academy’s Culinary Arts Program.

THE MIAMI LAKER

Goleman FBI Academy Magnet students learn surveillance modes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff An unknown subject walked into Barbara Goleman Senior High School while dozens of eyes tracked her as she made an exchange with another unknown subject (unsub). This was a simulation for Goleman’s Law Enforcement and Intelligence Magnet students who are learning and perfecting the art of surveillance under the direction of academy director

and Special Agent Peter Falcon. The academy was introduced in the 2015-2016 school year and is one of only a handful of programs in Florida affiliated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Miami Division. Students of the program not only study the facets of law enforcement, they are able to get a taste of it during activities like field trips to the FBI, Miami Division located in Miramar, or in practice situa-

tions like the surveillance test that took place at the school in late March. The school’s administration and faculty are supportive of the program’s unorthodox but effective teaching, the latest of which was the identification, surveillance and investigation of an unsub wherein students had to practice covertly tailing and communicating amongst each other much like special agents do in real life. Special Agents Alexis Carpinteri and Brian Waterman walked into class and briefed the students on an unsub by the name of Jane Lee. A photo was disseminated and the students were able to utilize skills learned throughout the year to track Lee’s movements when she entered the school and report it at a second briefing. Students blended in the crowd by pretending to read textbooks at benches or listening to music while really using their earphones as headsets. The unsubs, portrayed by two special agents, were acting out the details of a real case handled by the FBI. At the final briefing, the special agents pointed out accomplishments and areas of improvement. The program accepts new applications every year for students interested in preparing for a career in law enforcement. For more information on the magnet program, visit www. bghs.dadeschools.net.

Spanish Lake Elementary was among the top 10 elementary and K-8 schools in the schools in the district for a Total Fluency Gain with 62,823 facts learned. Reyes said, “Reflex math is an interactive, computerized, easy to navigate math program which motivates and builds upon each part of the math pro-

gram in an effective and efficient way. It teaches to the student's needs and yet gives a deep conceptual understanding in a beneficial and interesting way to the student. Although my students are the ultimate winners with their efforts to work and make such incredible gains with Reflex Math, they were on cloud nine to be recognized for their diligence and performance.”

However the injury had no ill-effects, as Escarra, a Mater Academy alumni who was drafted by the New York Mets, picked up where he left off. So far this season, Escarra, 21, is batting .266, with 25 hits, 22 RBI and six home runs for the Panthers, who are 13-14 for the 2017 season. When the 2013 First Team All-Dade player signed to play with FIU, he exceeded his expectations starting in his freshmen year, when he started in 42 games, hit .247 with 17 RBI, including a triple in his second career college game against Rutgers. As a sophomore, Escarra hit .271 with 33 RBI and five dingers. The highlight of his second season was a 14-game hitting street, where he batted .373. RESULTS
