Ceremony for MLEC’s $5 million second phase By Amanda Delgado Special to The Miami Laker After seven months since the General Obligation (GO) Bond Progress town hall meeting in Miami Lakes Educational Center, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, and other school board members and community leaders, visited MLEC to commemorate improvements made to the school. The ribbon cutting event on April 2 celebrated the GO bond, which is currently funding about 200 projects with $1.2 billion across Miami-Dade schools. The first phase renovations made to MLEC and Technical College amounted to $2.5 million. Changes included a new covered walkway in the bus area, new flooring in the auditorium, upgrade of fire alarms and security systems, as well as new technology. “Right here in Miami Lakes Tech, this is a $7.5 million dollar project broken up into two phases,” said Carvalho. “First phase we just completed already with $2.5 million. It’s basically cosmetic, so it’s walkway improvements and exterior painting and interior painting. The second phase is more structural, so common walkway and number of other improvements that’s valued to $5 million.” The first phase of the project

was completed both under time and under budget. “We made a promise to the voters when they approved [the renovations]. This is a promise made, a promise that has taken place very quickly,” said Hantman. “I am very proud of what we’re doing in many more schools. I represent this area. [MLEC] is very special to me so I’m very delighted we’re [doing] this.” Projects similar to MLEC’s have taken place all throughout the county – deteriorating buildings are being replaced and repaired, and students are receiving new tablets. “It’s important that students see that we care about them and that their learning environment is important to us and is it to them,” said Vivian Santiesteban-Pardo, Region superintendent at MiamiDade County Public Schools. “I don’t think any student wants to come into a building that is not inviting, that is not beautiful, and that is not apt for higher learning. So many projects are in the works and even new school buildings are going to be built.” Jamie Torrens, Chief Facilities officer, agreed and said, “The work that was done here was something that was needed for many years. We’ve always wanted to make sure the school had the appearance that it deserved for the students.”

love for classic cars. Following his death, his friends reached out to his son, Roberto Alonso Jr., to keep his memory alive by resuming the event in his name. But he had a better idea. Roberto Alonso Jr., teamed up with The Graham Companies and Dolphins Cycling Challenge for the event in memory of his father. The former vice mayor’s classic Chevy Coupe will be on display along with other classic cars and brand new Mustangs.

NEW ATTRACTION for youngsters at this year’s annual Miami Lakes Spring Fling was the smallsize Petting Zoo. Hundreds of children, parents and families turned out for the event at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West on the day before Easter.

Par 3 Committee recommends Town accept donation By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Acting on a committee’s recommendation to take over some land that’s part of a golf course, the Miami Lakes Town Council discussed acquiring the property and converting it to a passive park, the best chance the city has to own a commodious green space area the city had been seeking since incorporation. The Miami Lakes Par 3 Committee, which was formed in 2013 to study the pros and cons of the property abutting the golf course at Don Shula’s Golf Club, concluded that the tract should only be used for a nature park. At the April 14 regular Town Council meeting, lawmakers were expected to accept the land donated by The Graham Companies, which agreed to pay for an environmental assessment, a boundary survey and a provision of grounds maintenance of the property for

two years. Lawmakers were also expected to agree on the terms of the donation, the process of development, the conceptual plan for the park and a tentative timetable or future development. The Par 3 Committee outlined the rules and regulations for usage of the outdoor facility, which would be open to Miami Lakes residents only for passive recreational activities such as pedestrian, hiking and jogging. The park would also serve as a featured historical, cultural, or archeological attraction; there would be no organized competitive sporting activities; and the land would be maintained in its current topography. According to the Par 3 Committee, that portion of the golf course was shut down in the 1990s but the golfing area still attracts many residents to purchase their homes and apartments abutting the green space area. During a series of meetings, the group discussed a wide range of concerns and suggestions with The Graham Companies, Florida Power and Light and former Miami Lakes director of Community and Leisure Services Tony Lopez. The most significant concern was the overhead power lines covering the Par 3 land. The transmission lines were significantly lower than Florida’s limits and FPL agreed to replace all wooden poles with concrete posts by this year. The committee strongly sug-

gested the replacements be finished before the town opens the passive park. The group also suggested building different paths for walkers/joggers and bikers under the power lines, as the area is solely used for public activities. The committee also recommended building a parking lot on the northwest portion of the area; the parking lot will be adjacent to N.W. 77 Avenue, add more parking spaces along 77 Avenue; and create more parking spaces near commercial properties. The Par 3 Committee’s final recommendation urged the council not to vote on the design of the passive park until discussing blueprints with residents during a workshop, including members of the committee. In other Council news: • Council members, on first reading, were expected to pass an ordinance to update the town’s comprehensive plan for water supply plan amendments to be sent and reviewed by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and other review agencies. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution to create a special taxing district for Lake Hilda lake maintenance services done by Miami-Dade Public Works and Waste Management. • Lawmakers were expected to approve a resolution for a zoning application of a conditional use for a sleep testing facility at 16420 N.W. 59th Avenue. • Lawmakers were expected to

approve the Neighborhood Matching Grant Program application for the Loch Andrews Homeowners Association in the amount of $4,511 for a tree beautification project. • Councilmembers were expected to approve a resolution to formally establish the Veterans Affairs Committee, which was previously an ad-hoc committee

since 2008. The committee created the town’s veteran’s memorial outside Town Hall. • Councilmembers discussed Councilman Tony Lama’s plan for Miami Lakes to host a Realtor Forum, where area real estate agents would be invited to take part and provide their input to the town on what potential buyers are seeking when they visit Miami Lakes.

Is there such a thing as the art of coexistence? God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza deals with two sets of parents who meet to have a civilized discussion about a schoolyard scuttle between their sons. What begins as a cordial evening ends with the adults themselves acting like children. Directed by Robert Coppel, God of Carnage will run from April 24 to May 17 at The Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street in Miami Lakes.

LET’S HEAR FROM YOU! Got a story idea about your family, school, church, organization or even a neighbor? Email us at miamilaker1@aol.com, or call 305-817-4078.

God of Carnage is a tight, taut, tense and funny play that deals with a host of subjects including parenting, misogyny, racial prejudice, homophobia, and even the death of a pet hamster. The play’s catharsis occurs as the characters gradually become more honest with one another. Described as a dark comedy of manners, without the manners, God of Carnage poses the question “Are individuals born with civilized traits, or do they learn them?” The play stars Robert Anderson, Rachel Stone, Manny Catalino, and Christina LaRochelle. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $18 for students with valid ID. M-Dade Water/Sewer Dept. offers quiz on water usage Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department is encouraging residents to take a quick quiz about their family’s water usage. Residents can log onto the department’s website, www. miamidade.gov/wasd, select the water calculator and answer some questions about water habits and appliances. Participants can learn ways to not only save water and energy, but conserve the family’s budget, as well.

For instance, just by keeping the faucet on while brushing teeth for approximately three minutes at a time wastes 12 gallons of water. That represents 13,129 gallons per person, per year. Taking shorter showers and using high efficiency showerheads also will cut down on wasted water. Replacing old toilets with high-efficiency toilets also will dramatically cut down on each household’s consumption.

Mario Vazquez named HML’s Teacher of the Year By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Mario Vazquez shares his birthday with Pablo Picasso, something he takes as a spiritual connection and influence on his work as an artist. Vazquez’s artistic talent led him to the classroom and into the halls of Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School where he was nominated and selected as Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015. Born in Cagua and raised in Cidra, Puerto Rico, Vazquez earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Art Education from Southern Connecticut State University and a Specialist degree from Barry University. The road to teaching for Vazquez first began following his service in the U.S. Army coupled with inspiration drawn from his parents. His mother was an educator and Vazquez grew up watching her read, study or correcting school work. Being raised in an educationally-rich environment along with a knack for art directed Vazquez to career options that allowed him to give back to the community whilst feeding the muse. He began teaching Spanish in New Haven, Connecticut, for a period of time until his itch for art led him to a position as an art teacher at Eli Whitney Vocational Technical High School in Hamden, Connecticut, and later to sunny Florida at HML where he juggles a long list of responsibilities and titles. Vazquez currently teaches Visual Arts at HML which includes drawing, painting, and photography. He is the Department chair for the school’s Foreign Languages and Performing and Visual Arts departments in addition to his role as the school’s webmaster and Art Gallery director. Vazquez also moonlights as an adjunct professor

at Broward College where he teaches Art Appreciation and as a doctoral graduate student for Higher Education Administration at Nova Southeastern University. “I value making a difference in the lives on the many students who walk into my classroom,” said Vazquez. “As a teacher it is very hard to turn off the switch of sharing knowledge with students. I learn as much from my students as they learn from me. I believe everyone brings something to the table that we all learn from. I see our diverse and multicultural society and world as a huge evergrowing classroom.” A special learning moment for Vazquez once came in the form of an apparent violation of school policy. A student in his class was on her cellphone and when reprimanded she simply said that it was an important call and she could not hang up. Upon closer inspection Vazquez came to see that the student was using sign language to communicate with her mother during an emergency via Skype on the cellphone. “Even though the no cell phone use policy is a school-wide one, I had to make the exception,” said Vazquez. “Those deep learning moments do not come too often. The mother needed her child’s assistance. Not a lot of people know the sign language communication format. I was the student in that exceptional learning moment.” Vazquez is also aware of the changing educational landscape with the progress of technology. With students becoming global learners Vazquez believes teachers, administrators and the education system must continue to step outside the box by delving into innovative methods of instructional delivery. “Technology is a tool we must learn to grasp in order to better

deliver options to today’s digital learners,” said Vazquez. In addition to his learning experience within the classroom, Vazquez also mentors interns and teachers during the academic school year such as working with Art Education program students from Florida International University by putting theory to practice. Outside the classroom Vazquez spends his time with his son, Mario Vazquez Jr., traveling, reading, researching and kayaking. Vazquez was previously named Rookie Teacher of the Year at HML for the 2003-2004 school year. Despite his selection as Teacher of the Year, Vazquez humbly suggested other recipients. “I did not expect to be nominated as Teacher of the Year,” said Vazquez. “Even though I feel really honored by this nomination, I personally think this award should be given to educators with over 20 years of teaching experience. Those educators are the ones who really deserve to be winners of this award.” Vazquez says he will always be a teacher at heart though he still has a list of goals to accomplish, one of which is to become a policymaker in the education field to tweak laws and regulations he feels can be improved and would further expand the support services for students at both the K-12 and college areas. “Our profession is not given much credit at times,” said Vazquez, ”yet we are the professionals who teach all other professions.”

Four longtime friends successful as Pace wrestlers By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Growing up in Miami Lakes, Monsignor Pace High wrestlers Alex Perez, Stephen Moreno, David Monrabal and Leo Ferradaz pushed each other year-round to be the best in their sport.

And what a push they got this year. Perez and Moreno each finished fourth at the state tournament in their respective weight class and Monrabal and Ferradaz made it to the regional, their best finish since they started wrestling in high

school. “They all have been friends for a long time,” said Joe Nagy, Leo’s stepfather who often attends their wrestling matches. “They are a unique group of kids with a unique story.” Wrestling in the 138 weight division, Perez, a junior, showed just why he is among the best wrestlers in the state of Florida. He is a second generation wrestler; his dad was a prolific grappler in Cuba and often gives his son some pointers that helped him reach the state tournament. “He knows what it feels like,” said Perez. “He attends my matches and gives me some advice.” Moreno, a sophomore who wrestled in the 113 weight division, said his older brother, Christopher, convinced him to follow in his footsteps. An acute shoulder injury kept Christopher Moreno, who was a member of Team USA and a twotime state runner-up, out of this year’s wrestling tournament. Stephen Moreno is determined to return to the state tournament next year and win it all. “I want to be the best in the world,” he said.

Monrabal, a sophomore, said he needs to work harder during the offseason if he wants to make it past the regional tournament in 2016. “It means sacrificing your teenage life,” Monrabal said. Nagy said he coaxed Ferradaz, who competed in the 106 weight division, to try wrestling because he was a wrestling workhorse in high school and thought his stepson would get something out of the sport. While other students will be enjoying their summer vacation, the foursome will be making the sacrifice, practicing hard each day and enduring a strict diet to get

meticulously prepared for next season. “Lot of practice this year,” Perez said. “It takes a lot of hard work to compete in the district, regional and state tournaments.” Said Moreno: “We have fun during practice but we focus on our goals but pushing each other hard. Three to four hours a day of practice can make us better athletes.” Nagy said the four boys are like brothers. “These are just a bunch of kids who pray together, excel in the classroom and push each other to be the best,” Nagy said. “They are really focused.”

Goleman heads to playoffs with 19-2 season record By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Ranked the top team in MiamiDade County baseball and No. 5 in the state, winning the Hall of Fame Classic Tournament and riding a 16 game winning streak, Barbara Goleman High players are not satisfied with the team’s regular-season success. At 19-2 and playing in the GMAC tournament this week and the subsequent division postseason, the team’s goal of winning the district playoff championship is unpretentious compared to winning the state title. Anything less would be a big disappointment for a team that has the best hitting and pitching staff in the county, and demonstrated they can win games in the clutch. The Gators’ last loss was against Archbishop McCarthy on February 26, a walk-off single, and since then, the team has never looked back. “The 8-7 loss to McCarthy showed us that we can play our best baseball,” said pitcher Michael Pelaez, who is 7-0 and recorded a 1.30 ERA. “After that, we developed great chemistry among the players and coaches. We are playing like a family.” Pelaez said the team is not content with the success until they win the state championship. “We are not satisfied with 19-2

because we want to go far,” he said. “We are trying to win it all this year.” The Gators’ first task in reaching the state championship game is winning the district playoff championship. In the first round, Goleman faces Norland High, a team the Gators beat twice during the regular season but the postseason might be a different story. “It’s hard to beat a tough team three times in one season,” said Gators head coach Jose Lopez. “We have to rely on more execution to win.” While competing in the GMAC, Lopez said his team is not overlooking their opponents because the tune-up for the playoffs is significant as well. “We are talking it one day at a time,” he said. “We are concentrating on the tournament and not overlooking every team just because we are having a great season.” The 2015 Gators team is quite impressive, according to local and state high-school sports pundits. Besides Pelaez’s perfect record and the best ERA in the county, four players are among the Top 50 players in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, including shortstop Eric Delgado, who is the No. 2 hitter in the county with a .550 batting average.

BARBARA GOLEMAN’S baseball team which is Miami-Dade County’s top team and ranked number 5 in the state. Infielder Justin Darreneche is among the top scorers and base stealers in Miami-Dade County. In the Gators’ regular-season finale against Westland Hialeah, Darreneche, the leadoff hitter, went two-for-four, scored two runs and stole three bases. “It feels good to be on a winning team,” he said. “Everyone is happy for now but our big goal is winning the state title.” Lopez said Darreneche is the heart of the team.

“He doesn’t have much power but he has pitchers on the mound worried,” Lopez said. Kevin Perez plays two positions, pitcher and catcher, but he hasn’t thrown in some games because the team wants him healthy and well rested for the postseason. Perez is 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA. “We are trying to keep him healthy for the playoffs,” Lopez said. The Gators proved they can

beat the best teams in Florida and the Midwest. Goleman recently won the Hall of Fame Classic Tournament in Pompano Beach by beating Broward’s No. 3 state ranked Stoneman Douglas and Colorado’s Fairview High School, which is the No. 6 team in the nation. The Gators won the tournament with an undefeated record. “Those were some outstanding guys we beat,” Lopez said.

Anytime you have elite NCAA student athletes working with kids in an educational environment, it’s going to be a win-win situation. The coaches and players were very patient and that’s the key to getting the kids engaged and willing to learn,” said Ed Londono, head coach of the

Miami Lakes Rockies team. “My daughter really enjoyed herself at those clinics. I think our kids really connected with the Barry U softball players, and were excited about coming out and supporting them at the game,” said Lucy Valle, parent. “Those players are great role models for our girls.” The Barry Buccaneers (24-7, 82 SSC) held on to the top spot in the Sunshine State Conference softball standings with a 1-0 shutout of 14th-ranked Rollins at Buccaneer Field that Saturday. Alayna Gallagher drove in the only run of the game in the fifth inning. Megan Copeland, who had walked and stole second, scored the run. Haley Wiseman (11-4) twirled a three-hit shutout past the Tars (28-5, 9-4 SSC). She walked two and struck out eight in tossing her second shutout of the season. “Our team enjoys spending time with kids and passing along some of the knowledge we’ve acquired over the years. We understand the work and commitment it takes to participate and improve in any given sport. We also stress having fun along the way, and enjoy time being with teammates,” said coach Danielle Penner.

Two American softball stars sign with Miami Dade College American High’s ace softball players Kayleen Romero and Chastity Velez signed on the dotted line two weeks ago to study and play softball for the MiamiDade College Sharks. The two girls are the proud products of the Miami Lakes Optimist Club softball program. Romero and Velez played in the program since they were eight years old and advancing to play for the Optimist Club’s Miami Lakes Heat All-Star team, helping to bring numerous championships home, being coached by Alex

Castroman, Ulisses Vazquez, Aldo Romero and Lissette Morales. The Optimist club, their parents and the coaches couldn’t be prouder,” said Castroman. “Both Kayleen and Christy endured many early wake up calls to travel all over the state representing the Heat and Optimist Club.” Castroman said the girls’ parents, Amanda and Aldo and Alfredo and Yvette are extremely proud of all the “hard work the girls have put in to receive the honor.”

Pace Spartans’ baseball team at 14-8 on season and No. 1 seed in District playoffs starting next week The Miami Laker staff Starting five young freshmen in last year’s postseason, Monsignor Pace’s baseball team lost a disappointing district semifinal game against Florida Christian in extra innings. Needing two more outs to win, the Spartans allowed Florida Christian to tie the game and send it into overtime and pull off the victory. This postseason might be a little tougher for Pace with a lot of young players. At 14-8, the Spartans are the No. 1 seed in the district playoffs, which start next week and head coach Tom Duffin is relying on his top three hitters and pitchers to get them through the postseason. Outfielder Lorenzo Hampton, who is bound for the University of California, is hitting over .400 and two home runs. Shortstop Jorge Arenas is hitting .400 and hit one home run with 18 RBI. “He is playing solid defense for us this year,” Duffin said. Pace’s catcher Andre Sanchez is batting .380. “They’re the top three hitters who are carrying most of the load,” Duffin said. The pitching staff will be in heavy rotation during the playoffs, as Duffin is planning to use his pitchers to the fullest to help his team win. “We will carry 7 to 8 pitchers for the playoffs,” he said. They include Rick Rodriguez, Juan Rodriguez, Matt Dardaer and Peter Diaz.

American’s Ashley Alfonso wins in first start over HML American High softball player Ashley Alfonso got her first start last month as a freshmen, showing her coach and teammates why they made the right choice when they called her up from the junior varsity team. She pitched several solid innings and led the varsity team to a victory over Hialeah Miami Lakes. Ashley is the latest player from the Miami Lakes Optimist Club softball program who is also playing well in high school. She has played in the program since she was 8, and she is the starting pitcher for the Miami Lakes Heat All-Star travel team that is coached by Alex Castroman.

ASHLEY ALFONSO “We are very proud of her here at the Optimist Club and so is her mom and dad, Lorena and Avilio, who is also an assistant coach for the Heat Team,” said Castroman.

Optimist Club’s registration for basketball closes April 25 The Miami Lakes Optimist Club will be holding registration for the 2015 basketball season, from 9:30 to noon, on consecutive Saturdays April 18 and 25, at Miami Lakes Middle School, 6425 Miami Lakeway North. Late registration and tryouts will be held on Saturday, May 2. Boys and girls players from ages 7 to 18 must bring a copy of their birth certificates and be fitted for their uniforms. The registration fee is $150 per player. The 6-week regular season starts Monday, June 8, with each team playing two games per week from Monday through Thursday.

The games will be played at Hialeah Gardens and Barbara Goleman high schools. The teams with the best records will qualify for the playoffs to crown champions in each division. Last year, 350 players participated in the basketball program. For years, the basketball program at Miami Lakes Optimist has been popular and produced NBA players such as Cleveland Cavalier and former Miami Heat guard James Jones and Portland Trail Blazers guard Steve Blake. Miami Lakes Educational Center students join ‘Fight Apathy’ campaign By Stephanie Brito Special to The Miami Laker On March 18, students in the Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) Junior State of America (JSA) chapter participated in the national #FightApathy campaign. “It was a wonderful experience to see people our age interested in real world issues that affect us,” said student Marissa Echeverria, the vice president-elect for MLEC’s JSA chapter. Fight Apathy is a national campaign which ran from March 16 to 28. Schools across the country launched Fight Apathy campaigns using stickers and posters that said, “I believe in…” Students then filled in the sentence with a range of political issues they are passionate about. At Winter Congress, JSA’s annual mock congress event held

beliefs written on them. The purpose of Fight Apathy is to start a dialogue between students about politics. The organization considers this especially important during a time where political involvement is at an all time low for young people. MLEC’s JSA chapter set up a Fight Apathy table where students filled out “I believe in…” flyers and took photos in front of posters. Students also wore “I believe in…” stickers during the school day. Throughout the event, participants posted on social media using the hashtag #FightApathy. “Fight Apathy not only highlights how the youth sees politics and social issues, but also allows for a growing supportive community,” said student Sabrina Cerquera, a junior at MLEC. Cerquera is a dedicated member to her JSA chapter and also the Lieutenant Governor-elect for Key Club Zone K Division 25. She currently serves as the Lieutenant for Miami-Dade Police Department Northwest District Explorer Post 526. Students like her who are politically involved and engaged in the community fight apathy everyday. For more information on Fight Apathy, visit www.states.jsa.org/ fightapathy.

programs such as Dreamweaver, Premier Plus, and coding. “Our world is changing,” said HML principal Eric Acosta. “It’s becoming more digital and we want to give students the opportunity and the skill set needed to do things like run their own business. We give the students in our community choices for quality education in their field of interests all within one school.” Likened to a university experience, the new academy’s flexible seating classroom and skill-heavy program will offer students who wish to delve into fields of entrepreneurship the opportunity for education that builds both within and outside of school walls. The school’s plans for this new academy include potentially designating it as a magnet program in the years to come and opening a student-run store to offer items like website building for teachers and school tshirts created by academy students. Pace High hosts inaugural STEM Boot Camp for 5th to 8th graders By Rene D. Basulto Special to The Miami Laker About 70 students in grades five through eight from over 25 elementary and middle schools had hands-on experiences with science, technology, and engineering at Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s inaugural Spartan STEM Boot Camp on February 28. Campers attended 1-hour workshops for engineering, coding, biology, and chemistry taught by different STEM Academy teachers from Pace. For the Engineering workshop in Pace’s Innovation Center, the STEM Academy Engineering Program’s lead teacher Laura Lima and substitute teacher Vanessa Delgado had students build a race car with as few K’NEX parts as possible. At the end, all of the cars were raced down a slope and measured on their distance, speed, and their number of parts. For the Coding workshop, the Emerging Computer Technologies Program’s lead teacher Hedda Falcon led campers through the Hour of Code program where students created an Angry Birdsthemed game and learned programming logic and language.

PACE JUNIOR Cristina Castillo (second from left) and campers watch as Mother of Our Redeemer eighth grader Albert Rivera (third from left) experiments with elements as part of the chemistry workshop at Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Spartan STEM Boot Camp. Guided by the Advanced Biomedical Sciences Program’s lead teacher, Luis Mayo, and science teacher Stephanie Hibbard, campers in the Biology workshop mashed strawberries up within a homemade solution before mixing in isopropyl alcohol which let them see and extract white strands at the top, which were actually the strawberries’ DNA.

Led by Pace science teachers Scott Giberson and Dr. Enrique Dominguez, the Chemistry workshop had campers conducting experiments on six types of metallic elements. They tested if the element could conduct electricity and react to acids, measured its mass, volume, and density, and observed its color, luster, and magnetic properties.

A TV Production class at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High (HML) wrapped up a session with the Florida Film Institute’s (FFI) CINEMA program. About thirty students took part in the program that culminated in the shooting of their short film “Curiosity at Best” on March 14. The students were guided by professionals from the film industry throughout the production of this film from the development of the script to the final cut. TV Production students took on the roles of screen writers, directors, producers, actors and film editors. The film was shot on one long day that involved the set up and breakdown of camera, audio and lighting equipment for each of the film’s 9 scenes. The film was shot using a high definition digital film camera provided by the FFI but the editing and special effects are being completed in the school’s digital video editing facility, which will be part of HML’s new Digital Media Technology and Entrepreneurship Academy. The completed film will debut at an awards ceremony held

American Senior High’s Student Government Association (SGA) participated in the districtwide effort of Students Supporting Project Up-Start. This is a homelessness awareness campaign to raise the awareness of the definition of homeless under the McKinney Vento Law so that more eligible students in Miami-Dade are receiving the services they need. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is the fourth largest school district in the nation and has over 7,000 identified homeless students. American’s SGA organized a school wide Kitchenware Drive to obtain items for Project UpStart. Kitchenware included paper plates, paper bowls, plastic utensils, napkins, disposable cups, cooking utensils, and small pots or pans. Once word got out, the simple drive soon became a competition between homerooms to collect the most items. The compassion for the cause from the student body and the staff was evident by the generosity of items that came pouring in. The over 500 items donated will be going to the "Up-Start Store," which is housed in the School Board Building in downtown Miami. Barbara Goleman names 2015 Top Scholar Athletes By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Goleman seniors Gabriella Sallai and Danny Xie have been named the school’s Top Scholar Athletes by Athletic director Jay Flinchum for their outstanding academic achievements and athletic talent. Both Xie and Sallai are bowlers and badminton players and have played together in teams since their sophomore year. Both are also tied for the top GPA of the school at an estimated 6.13. Sallai has gone to states for bowling all 4 years of her participation in the team and was the top individual district champion with an average of 130. Xie averages 115 in bowling and both Xie and Sallai placed in 4th for the county in badminton doubles for sophomore and junior year. Each are named in their respective boys and girls doubles teams for first place in the county. “I’m really amazed at their growth and how they stayed with the sports and how they improved. They practice hard and I’m amazed at their academic achievements even more,” said Flinchum. Sallai was also a named a Posse Scholar and will be attending Franklin and Marshall College in the fall. Xie plans to attend University of Florida and recently completed a STEM program at the university. Debbie Perez, the boys and girls coach for bowling and badminton at Goleman said “They work very hard and they both are very humble. They do well in school and out of school. They get to go to class and get frustrated with their projects, then they come out and beat the birdie in badminton and so that’s a good stress relief.”
